“Hometown roots and rubber boots.” Bob Gollan smiles as he repeats the slogan for this year’s Creston Valley Fall Fair. “This is such a wonderful event,” he said. “So much to do and something for everyone.” With his strong connections to the local music community, Gollan has been involved in the fair for many years. Now, as president, he has worked tirelessly with fellow volunteers to keep the near century-old tradition alive. The 2013 event kicks off Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., with opening ceremonies at 4:30. Appearing will be Regional District of Central Kootenay directors John Kettle, Larry Binks and Garry Jackman, Creston Mayor Ron Toyota and NelsonCreston MLA Michelle Mungall. Displays and activities will run to 9 p.m. On Saturday, an earlier than usual 9 a.m. start time coincides with the opening of the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, which moves to the Creston and District Community Complex parking lot from its usual downtown location for this day only. “There’s lots to do,” Gollan said. “Gord and Caroline Martin of Cherrybrook Farms are bringing in a portable miniature golf setup for the kids, which they will love.” Door prizes will be announced throughout the event, which will have an added focus on 4-H clubs.

Volunteers may be able to commit to one day or just as a casual fill-in on the odd day. There is a fuel allowance to cover the cost of gas. This is a way to give that helps all year long. Sensible BC

From page 1 Nearly a dozen volunteers are gearing up in the Creston half of the Nelson-Creston riding. With no plans to go door-to-door, they will be setting up tables around town to provide information and gather signatures. “We don’t want to cause trouble,” said local volunteer co-ordinator Marc Archambault. “We want to be respectful.” Sensible BC is a movement started by Dana Larsen, a cannabis legalization activist and founding member of both the Marijuana Party of Canada and the BC Marijuana Party; he resigned from both in 2003 to join the New Democratic Party. The goal of the referendum would be to approve a proposed “sensible policing act”, which would, according to campaign information, “redirect all B.C. police from searching, seizing or arresting adults for simple possession of cannabis. … Under the new law, a minor found in unlawful possession of cannabis would be treated the same as if it were alcohol.” “This campaign is really about not making criminals out of responsible adults,” said Archambault. “Marijuana doesn’t ruin people’s lives, prosecution for possession does. You get people around here who can’t walk dogs for PAWS (Pet Adoption and Welfare Society) because they were charged with possession 20 years ago.” In addition to the lasting impact for an individual, prosecution affects all taxpayers, with $1.3 billion being spent annually on police and court costs, according to the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse. “It’s a waste of resources,” Archambault said. Federal polls currently show that support for decriminalization and/or legalization is just under 70 per cent, Archambault said. But even with the support of people like Kash Heed and federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau — “Justin Trudeau really raised the bar on this when he came out as having smoked weed,” said Archambault — people are still leery of the stigma associated with cannabis. “Some people won’t volunteer because they say they’re afraid their employers will subject them to random drug tests,” said Archambault. But the key to change, he said, is letting people know that the campaign is about others, not their own preferences. “You don’t have to use it or even like it,” he said. “This is about not making criminals out of your family and friends.”

Energy Diet reduces power bills BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston Valley residents can learn firsthand about programs designed to help reduce power bills in their homes on Sept. 10 from 7-9 p.m. at the Creston and District Community Complex. FortisBC is launching the Kootenay Energy Diet by hosting “enerventions”, information sessions, throughout the region for customers who want to reduce their homes’ energy use and save money on their utility bills. “One of the best ways for homeowners to save on their energy bills is to make energy efficiency upgrades to their homes,” said Tom Loski, FortisBC customer service vice-president. “We saw how successful a community approach to energy savings can be with last year’s Rossland Energy Diet. Since then, we’ve

expanded the program to the Kootenays, and now the Okanagan, to provide customers with direct support in making home energy upgrades.” Kootenay Energy Diet participants will get a discounted energy assessment, energy saving products installed directly in their home, hands-on help applying for up to $6,000 worth of rebates, and, if eligible, financing options to make energy efficient improvements to their home. Participants receive access to: •an initial home energy assessment for only $60 (a value of $400); •energy efficiency products for the home; •LiveSmart BC rebates for insulation, draft proofing and more (a value of up to $4,000 per home); •up to $2,000 in FortisBC energy rebates; •an additional $800 rebate (conditions

From page 1 “This year we celebrate 100 years of 4-H in Canada,” volunteer Ginger Knudsen said. “We will be having two auctions. One will feature local food products like chickens, corn and cheese, all of which will be sold to help raise funds for the C.V. Agricultural Society’s bursary fund. The other will sell three steers and a lamb that have been raised by 4-H members.” Look for even more poultry displays this year — a 4-H Poultry Club has been established. “The poultry club is really blossoming,” Knudsen said. “The group won an online provincial 4-H competition this year.” Dairy, sheep and beef will also be featured. Outside on the soccer field horse demonstrations will be held on Saturday. “The tractor pull is always fun to watch, too,” Gollan said. A fair wouldn’t be complete without food. The locally owned Purple People Feeder food truck will be on hand, as will be a Greek food truck from Castlegar. Creston Valley Search and Rescue will be running a barbecue fundraiser and Shriners will be selling popcorn. Entertainment — including winners and signers from the Kootenays’ Best Singer contests — will be featured on the main stage in the arena and a kids play area will be set up in the curling rink. Of course, visitors will find tables filled with entries from their friends and neighbours. Fresh produce, flowers, preserves and baking, photographs, handicrafts, wine and beer, and needlework will be on display in abundance, as will farm animals. Demonstrations will go on throughout both days. “Don’t forget to watch for the boots!” vicepresident Gail Mason reminds — a contest will invite kids to count the many boots scattered throughout the community complex as a reminder of the 2013 fall fair theme.

A very dedicated cat enthusiast! Dorothy has been with us but a short time but has already made a big impact upon the cat area and cat well-being at the shelter. The cats’ needs are always well taken care of when Dorothy is around. This includes everything from mundane cleaning to grooming and lots of cat cuddles. The cats come flocking to the door when she arrives and can’t wait to get their treats from her before she leaves. Our dedicated volunteer has even taken one of the more demanding cats home to foster and returns with stories (and sometimes band-aids) of the exciting times she and the cat experience together.

Added to the above, Dorothy takes care of the cleaning and readiness of our Vet Room before and after vet visits. Always cheerful and happy to fill in when we are short- handed... as long as its not too early, as our Dorothy is not a morning person. She is a delight to work with! From all of us, past and present, Thank You Dorothy!

Ambassadors visit Creston BC USED OIL MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION

British Columbia has one of the best oil recovery rates in Canada at 80 per cent; however, every year over 17 million litres of used oil goes unaccounted for. As part of its campaign to promote public awareness and encourage responsible recycling, the BC Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA), a nonprofit organization, has launched its eighth annual provincewide Summer Ambassadors Tour. This year, Tire Stewardship British Columbia (TSBC) has partnered with BCUOMA in an effort to increase awareness of not just oil and antifreeze, but also tire scraps. In August, a team of ambassadors toured the Okanagan

Mungall top spender among riding candidates BY GREG NESTEROFF Nelson Star

Nelson-Creston New Democrat Michelle Mungall spent about $48,000 on her successful re-election campaign in May’s provincial election, according to financial disclosures released by Elections BC. That was a bit more than runner-up Greg Garbula of the BC Liberals, who spent roughly $44,250. Garbula, however, raised by far the most of any candidate through donations. His $25,000 in contributions included 23 of $250 or more, led by $1,500 from electronics manufacturer Pacific Insight. He also received $1,000 from Jetstream Capital Corp. and several individuals. His total war chest was about $100 more than he actually spent. (The difference between dollars raised by candidates and their overall campaign budgets is accounted for by transfers from their parties.) Mungall's only outside contribution over $250 was $400 from Voytech Computers. She received another $490 in smaller contributions and put up $340 personally. Her total campaign income was $52,500. Sjeng Derkx of the Green Party, who finished third, spent about $17,750 — $5,750 more than his income. He received $350 from David Jackson and $1,375 in smaller donations. Per vote received, Garbula spent $9.67, Mungall $5.85, and Derkx $5.24 In Kootenay West, re-elected New Democrat Katrine Conroy had about $55,000 in expenses while defeated challenger Jim Postnikoff of the Liberals posted a $30,000 tab. Conroy had the biggest budget of any candidate — $67,000 including in-kind donations — but didn’t use it all. In Boundary Similkameen, New Democrat Sam Hancheroff spent nearly $70,000 in his unsuccessful bid, the highest total of any candidate in the three local ridings. Hancheroff also had the most expensive campaign per vote — $9.83 for each of the 7,113 ballots he received. Liberal Linda Larson, who defeated Hancheroff, spent about $61,000. Two candidates in Boundary Similkameen actually had more votes than dollars spent: the Green Party’s John Kwasnica was the choice of 1,602 voters with a $1,300 campaign — which worked out to 83 cents per vote. But the most frugal campaign belonged to independent Doug Pederson in the same riding,

who didn’t spend anything. He still received 375 votes. The totals above include the campaign itself and the 60 days prior as well as other expenses outside those periods.

When throngs of residents and visitors descend upon Creston and District Community Complex this Friday and Saturday they won’t notice that it takes a little miracle of volunteers working behind the scenes to make the event happen. And that’s as they would have it — the show is intended to celebrate our rural and small town roots and the focus is on the displays, events and entertainment. For 95 years, residents of this valley have found value in attending and participating in a fair that really does have something for everyone, young and not so young. It is an important reminder of the role that agriculture continues to play in our daily lives, a chance to get up close and personal with people who grow our food and cook, bake and preserve it. This year there will be even more emphasis on the future of agriculture, as members of various 4-H groups show off their efforts. 4-H is 100 years old this year and the organization continues to help bring youth together, pledging to give head, heart, hands and health to their club, community and world, and to have fun while doing it. It doesn’t take much of an effort to appreciate the wonders of a valley whose climate allows for crops as diverse as grains, grasses, fruit and vegetables. It is part of the reason that our early pioneers chose the area to settle in — abundant fresh water and forests provided immediate sustenance until land could be cleared and put into production. It was no coincidence that families with logging operations also had close ties to agriculture. When we first came to Creston

Fairs, both fall and wellness

So, what are you doing this Friday and Saturday? Since agriculture plays a pretty big part in our valley, why not come to the Creston and District Community Complex and check out the 95th year of the Creston Valley Fall Fair and the showcasing of some of the finest assortment of flora, fauna and everything in between? Always an inexpensive way to spend a few entertaining hours, as well as visit with everyone you don’t see otherwise in town, the fall fair is not to be missed. Also, as part of the time-worn tradition, it is the time of year Heather and I tell each other excitedly about how we are going to enter our photos, woodwork or wine in next year’s fair and then eleven and a half months later, lament about our ever-busier schedules and missed deadlines, and usually end up sitting in our wooden rockers sipping wine and looking at photographs. While we are on the subject of fairs, mark your calendar for Oct. 26 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., when the first annual Health and Wellness Fair takes place at the community

Step-by-step guide to new bylaws To the Editor: How to pass a bylaw for beginners: 1. Declare a negative-option vote for a bylaw in mid-summer with no prior notice of the proposal or how taxpayer money will be spent. 2. Those against the proposal have 30 days to gather signatures on petitions. Those in favour, carry on enjoying your summer with no democratic duties required. 3. Twenty days into the process, if it looks like voters don’t like your proposal, call the whole thing off, disregard the signed petitions and the work that went in to them. 4. Call another vote at a time when those pesky voters are asleep or busy eating turkey. Christmas sounds good! Mike Somerville Wynndel

Generosity of locals appreciated To the Editor: A few weeks ago we needed to travel through your area and had the misfortune of having the water pump on the truck go. We were just outside of Yahk on a busy section of highway in an area that had no cellphone service. Thank you to the fellow that stopped to help us. He had experienced the exact same mishap three nights prior and was kind enough to radio his logging buddies who recommended a tow truck company. We also would like to thank the conservation officer who stopped not long after, and would be on the lookout for the tow truck as he

It is truly appreciated and will not be forgotten. If you are ever in our neck of the woods, we would be glad to repay the favour. Please don’t hesitate to call on us! We would also like to thank the elderly gentleman who lived just across from where we broke down. The use of your phone to get in touch with the other party we were travelling with was appreciated. Together, you saved our holiday! It is a great feeling to know there are still kindhearted souls left in the world we live in. Chen and Tracy Morin and family Fort Nelson

Monetary system is fraudulent To the Editor: “It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning,” said Henry Ford. My purpose in writing this letter is to spread an understanding of the fraudulent and immoral nature of our current monetary system more widely. The fact that our current monetary system is unsustainable and destined to fail based on simple math should motivate people to educate themselves on the subject, because the consequences will be painful and devastating for our civilization. Fundamentally, however, the issue is a moral one, one of ethics, as well as one of economics. Although people engage in monetary transactions on a daily basis, and spend a considerable percentage of their time devoted to earning and investing their money, most have no understanding of the origin of our cur-

rent “money”, nor are they taught much about it in our public schools. Once one understands the inherent fraudulence of the system and who benefits by it, it would be easy to conclude that this omission is deliberate. The Bible devotes considerable space to the subject (there are over 250 verses on money), and rightfully so, since money is involved in many of our interpersonal interactions and an honest money is essential for a moral society. I would argue that the present debt-based monetary system is the epitome of usury and contravenes all of the Ten Commandments. It infects and corrupts everything it touches. It is responsible for much of the social ills and corruption which plague us, and once one gains an understanding of it, it is impossible not to be outraged. I would also conclude that social justice and peace will not be achieved by democratic means and true freedom is impossible unless the monetary system is reformed. Many words could be used to describe our current money — the words hoax, fraud, illusion, and tool of neo-feudal debt-slavery and control spring to my mind. One thing that it could not be described as is honest weights and measures, which is what Bible-believing Christians should be using in their monetary interactions with their fellow man. How can a system that allows a few the privilege of creating money and manipulating the value of it, thereby cheating others of the fruits of their labour, be honest or moral? The money issue lies at the heart of the so-called global financial crisis, which is far from over, and although we have been fortunate here in Canada to have been spared much of the pain thus far, I would argue that it will be too late for us to address many of the issues if we wait until we personally feel the fallout in our own pocketbooks. It is my hope that this letter will provoke further discussion, research and a debate about alternatives. Understanding your credit report

As credit has become more and more abundant in our society, your credit report, and thus your credit rating, has become more important in your daily

also find liens and judgments on your credit report, as well as your address and possibly your work history. The accumulation of all of this information is called your credit report. The information on your credit report varies based on your creditors and what they have reported about you. Potential lenders and others, such as employers and cellphone providers, view your credit history as a reflection of your character. Whether we like it or not, our financial habits have a lot to say about the way in which we choose to live our lives. The credit score, or beacon score, is a number that gives mortgage lenders an idea of your lending risk. Credit scores range from 300 to 900; the higher your credit score the better. The mortgage products and interest rate that you will qualify for are often determined by your credit score. Generally speaking, the lowest beacon score that lenders are willing to work with is 600. If your credit score falls below 600, insured financing (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Genworth, needed for financing properties at higher than 80 per cent loan to value) will generally not consider the application. life. Your credit rating affects all aspects of your financial activities when it comes to borrowing money. Your credit rating also has the ability to affect the job you get, the apartment you rent and even the ability to open a bank account. Your credit report itself is simply a listing of all of your debt. Here in Canada, the two main credit-reporting agencies are Trans Union and Equifax. Both agencies have a credit history file on anyone who has ever borrowed money. Every time you borrow money or make a payment on a loan or credit card, the lender then reports the information about the transaction to these two agencies. In addition to credit information, you will

score I see is in the 650-700 range, and anything above 700 is exceptional. However, lenders do consider a lot more than just the beacon score. Other things they consider are how long you have had credit products, the size and type of product, and any past missed payments (to a certain extent). So even though a person might have a 760 beacon score, if the only trade line on their credit bureau is a $500 credit card, and they are applying for a $400,000 mortgage, their credit history may not suffice. Another thing that I see quite a bit, are people that are in excellent financial health but have no credit history. There are sometimes ways around this, though. Some lenders will review “other” sources of credit history, such as phone, utility and other kinds of regular bill payments. If someone has a damaged credit rating, there are often still alternatives. Mortgage brokers have access to numerous private lenders that that are ready and willing to lend to people with bad credit. However, it does come at a price. The interest rates are generally much higher (currently 8-10 per cent versus 3.5 per cent for someone with good credit history), and there are upfront costs, as well. See MORTGAGE, page 8

Creston Rotary Club installs 2013-2014 board BY PETER HEPHER

You could call it changing of the guard, except that the Creston Rotary Club’s board of directors, installed on June 10, was much the same as its predecessor. There were a few new faces in some roles, however. In particular, Scott Veitch took over as president from Don Tarrant, a former president who had been acting as the club’s leader since illness forced Klaus Kunlein to step down soon after his installation a year ago. Before the evening’s official business began, however, members and their guests — some of them arrayed in Greek togas in honor of the event’s suggested theme — enjoyed a delicious, authentic Greek meal and a time of socializing as they inaugurated the new convention room in the Creston Hotel. Then MC Chuck Truscott took over and introduced

Tarrant who, as retiring president, presented the following awards: Rotarian of the year to Sandy Reid, Alan Wilson Award to Ken Gadicke, and Paul Harris Fellowships to Reid, Nicole Nixon and Christine Miller. As he prepared to step down, Tarrant thanked his fellow outgoing directors for their support during the past year and urged the incoming board and the club as a whole to get the word out about Rotary’s principles and activities in the community and around the world. Then it was time for Truscott to begin the installation process by calling the roll of the new board of directors, starting with Veitch and following with Bob Gollan (president-elect), Ken Gadicke (treasurer), Rand Archibald (secretary, succeeded following his passing by Geri Lee), Brenda Silkie (community service), Henry Schoof (club service), Gwen Telling (internation-

al service), Bob Griffith (membership chair and new generation), Klaus Kunlein (vice-president elect), Don Tarrant (past president and Rotary Foundation), Tom Wells (vocational services) and Christine Miller (sergeant-at-arms). Tarrant, in his capacity as district secretary, began the actual installation by “pinning” Veitch, who then pinned the other directors present. Finally, Veitch delivered his installation speech, beginning by thanking all the people who had helped the club and himself in the past and for trusting in and honoring him by choosing him to be club president. His central theme, however, was an enlargement of the one with which Tarrant had passed on the baton earlier in the night’s proceedings. He spoke of the need to increase club membership, to make that membership, individually and collectively, more effective in the sphere of service while at

Maria Casandra Karountzos November 12 1982 ~ July 18, 2013

Maria Casandra Karountzos, of Creston BC, first born daughter of Bonnie and Jim, brought her shining light into the world on November 12 1982, in Creston BC, and was tragically taken on July 18, 2013 near Kelowna, BC. Her big bright eyes earned her the nickname “Peeper”. Maria started her life’s journey on a small farm in Canyon BC, where she developed a love for animals and the beauty of nature, along with her brothers Chris and John, and sister Mimika. She became a jet-setter at age 6, when she and her sister Mimika began their bi-annual trips to Nafplion Greece, where they were immersed in the culture and language of their father’s heritage. At age 13, Maria and her sister Mimika attended public school in Greece, where she learned to read and write Greek, and study the music and culture of the country, thus instilling her love for her Greek Heritage, including the food, music and dance. This is proudly showcased at the Greek Night celebrations the family hosts at Jimmy’s Pub and Grill. Maria loved to dance. At age 5 she became one of the first students of the Lori Kepke School of Highland Dance and continued with Highland Dance studies until age 17. She was a very accomplished student earning dozens of medals in competitions, overall Aggregate awards, and achieving the top recognition of honours in Highland Theory. She also loved tap dancing, jazz, and of course, Greek dancing! Maria’s love of flowers began early in life, when she would scout the woods around the farm, collecting huge bouquets of wild flowers to brighten up her parents’ home. She was affectionately known as their little “Flower”. As she grew up her love of beautiful flowers became ever more apparent and was then nicknamed “The Flower Pot”. Maria’s true passion was being in the gardens, carefully tending to her numerous plants, giving special attention to her favorites; the lilies, orchids and roses. She maintained all the beautiful gardens at the Creston Hotel, and was making plans to open her own flower shop in the Okanagan, where she planned to share her life with her other love, Josh Hoffart.

Maria was a respected and accomplished entrepreneur, and she displayed her talents in the family business she co-owned with her father Jim, brother Chris, and sister Mimika along with their spouses. She was introduced to the business community at a very young age, when she was required to participate in the family businesses. At age 15, when her mother Bonnie (Rob) Geddes re-opened the Tivoli Theatre, Maria stepped right in to help kick off this new venture. She continued to work there for four years, learning all aspects of the business including customer service, projectioning, and staff management. When she was 19, she then joined her father Jim at the Creston Hotel, where she further expanded her business knowledge and skills, and the business was later passed on to Maria and her siblings Chris and Mimika. Maria had a unique was of bringing her positive energy and bright smile to work with her every day, making each client feel individually special. As a skilled baker, Maria made fabulous cakes and desserts she loved to share at the hotel. She shared her love with all who knew her, including the staff she worked with. Her ability to bond with her staff on a personal level developed into deep friendships that carried on beyond the walls of the workplace. She was a true and loyal friend, while still retaining the highest of respect as their employer, and this loyalty was reciprocated by all. Maria’s love for children was unparalleled. She was overjoyed when her youngest sister Destiny (Geddes) was born when Maria was 16 years old. She developed a bond with Destiny, often standing in as her ‘sistermom’. Despite the age difference, the three sisters would special days such as ‘Sister Tuesdays’ and their favourite… triple S; Sister Sleepover Saturday! Family was everything to Maria. It was never more apparent than the excitement she displayed with the births of her niece Sofia, and nephews Johnny and Eric. She was a doting Auntie. Maria bestowed her love, kindness and gentle nature upon these young and precious children in her life, and their feelings for her were mutual. You could always count on Maria to care for the kids like they were her own. She was amazing! Maria is survived by her parents Bonnie (Rob) Geddes and Jim (Fotini) Karountzos; brothers Chris (Cori) Karountzos, John Karountzos; sisters Mimika (Paul) Coleman and Destiny Geddes; niece Sofia Karountzos; nephews Johnny and Eric Coleman; maternal grandparents Joyce Mehrer and Edwin Mehrer, and over 40 aunts and uncles and numerous cousins, exceeding 100. Maria, our very special “Flower”, was picked by the Angels and will be forever missed, remembered in our hearts, and loved by all who knew her. “And in the end, it is not the years in your life that count, but the life in your years.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

Horse club celebrates 100 Creston Beginner years of 4-H at achievement day Concert Band seeking members BY ALEXANDRA HAYES

Members of the Creston Valley 4-H Horse Club celebrated the 100th anniversary of 4-H in Canada with some very special commemorative belt buckles and spoons on their achievement day in June. Members participated in their showmanship and equitation classes and then joined up for a drill team routine that they had worked on throughout the year. Both beginner and seasoned riders rode to Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys. Just a few days later, all members, together with horses, campers and assorted family members, headed out to Nelson to take part in a special four-day 4-H clinic with the Nelson and District 4-H Club and the Kootenay Cinch and Saddle 4-H Club. It was a busy time with members participating in equitation classes with clinicians, as well as showmanship classes, vaulting lessons with the Kootneigh Vaulters, driving classes, judging classes and ground school. It was certainly a wonderful way to wrap up a wonderful year! Members would like to thank 4-H alumni members Pat Hunt and Lillian Leslie for accompanying the club on this trip and for sharing their camping expertise, as well as Steven Van der Merwe for the countless hours spent cooking by the fire pit.

The Creston Valley 4-H Horse Club meets on the second Tuesday of every month, September through June, at the community complex from 6:30-8 p.m. We welcome any new members and we would love to hear from any Creston Valley 4-H Horse Club alumni who might still reside in the valley. Drop by and share your 4-H horse stories and pictures with us as we get ready to celebrate 100 years of 4-H in B.C. in 2014!

It’s time to dig out that old clarinet, saxophone or trumpet you’ve been saving since those days, long ago, that you played in your high school band. A new group, the Creston Beginner Concert Band, especially for “more mature” folks who played once or have never played at all, has been formed. And we want you to play with us. Playing in a band is greatly rewarding. It stimulates the brain, uses muscles and trains memory. Band members learn to work as a team, and in this process produce beautiful music. Are you too old? No. Music is such a vital and fundamental part of our beings no one is ever too old to learn. If you played in a school band a long time ago and never touched your instrument again or just never played anything (other than a record player) because someone told you

that you had no musical talent (they were wrong), you can play. And you can have fun! Dr. Roy Ernst from the prestigious Eastman School of Music created the New Horizons Music Program in the late 1980s. It’s still going strong today. Musicians participating in the program love playing. Not just do they love to play, but the experience has greatly enriched their lives. The instruments for this group will be traditional concert band fare: trumpets, French horns, trombones, baritones, tubas, flutes, clarinets and saxophones. We will be rehearsing every Wednesday at the Prince Charles Secondary School band room from 4-5 p.m. Costs for the program will be very low (enough to cover music and room rentals). For more information, visit www.mellowood.ca/ music/bband or call Bob van der Poel at 250-8665772.

Tournament decides 2013 Creston golf champions CRESTON GOLF CLUB

It was championship weekend at the Creston Golf Club on Aug. 24 and 25, when men, ladies and junior club members all took part to determine the club champions for the 2013 season, with 91 participants in all. The players enjoyed two days of excellent weather and

superb playing conditions for the championship. It was all capped off with a playoff for the men’s club title as Tim Park defeated Randy Sterling with a birdie on the first extra hole. Sterling certainly made things exciting by sinking a 60-yard wedge shot for an eagle three on the par-five 18th hole.

The junior title also needed a playoff to decide the outcome, as Keiran Poznikoff made an eagle to defeat Brayden Czar on the first extra hole, as well. In the ladies division, Ruthie Hoffman played solid golf to secure an eight-shot victory over the closest competitor. See WINNERS, page 13

More than greatly appreciated! … Marion and Bruno Schultz for your selfless voluntary dedication to SNAP and keeping this program viable to pet owners in the Creston Valley. … Croc Radio for the great music at Black Bear Books! … The person who found my wallet for turning it in to the RCMP when they found it in the Extra Foods parking lot. I got it back in about fifteen minutes. … Everyone who so kindly helped with Walter’s funeral for making it so much easier to cope with. … John Sommerfeld for coming to our mom’s aid when she fell and broke her hip, calling an ambulance, riding with her to the hospital, and staying with her until family arrived. You are truly an amazing young man! … Anita, Brian, Casey, Dianne, Jackie and Lorne for both the wonderful birthday wishes and being some of the most upbeat and enjoyable coworkers a girl could ask for.

Helena Lambert

December 5, 1935 - September 3, 2012 It’s been a year now since you were taken from us. A huge part of me is missing and I can’t seem to find it. I knew one day we would probably lose you but never dreamed you would be taken from us before it was time. I hope you and Dad have reunited and his hearty chuckle can still make you smile. We could sure use some more of that here. I think of you every day and the tears still flow. You are greatly missed by all of us, Ernie, Halina, Robyn, Kayla and Scout

Ronald Clinton Brown June 8, 1928 ~ August 21, 2013

Ron passed away peacefully on August 21, 2013 at the Union Hospital in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan with loving family at his side.

He was predeceased by his parents Hal and Hazel, and his son Brian. He is survived by his son Barry (Mary) Brown of Calgary, daughter Brenda (Scott) Nutzhorn and grandson Eric of Creston BC, daughter Bev Langlois (Ron Sisetsky) and grandchildren Ashlee, Brady, and Carlee of Elbow, SK., brothers Gerald (Ruth) Brown of Calgary, Wayne (Margaret) Brown of Vancouver and numerous nieces and nephews. Anyone who spent time with Ron were both amazed and amused by his quick wit and sense of humour. He was a kind and generous man who found the true joy in his life in his grandchildren - he was so proud of them. We will all miss him every day. Following cremation, the interment will be held in Creston, BC, in the fall of 2013. Friends wishing to make a memorial tribute may do so to the Moose Jaw Union Hospital Intensive Care Unit 455 Fairfold St. E. S6H 1H3. Their compassionate care makes the unbearable bearable. In living memory of Ron, a memorial planting will be made by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).

Concert society season offering five musical acts CRESTON CONCERT SOCIETY

The days are getting darker earlier, and you may find yourself thinking “Now what will I do with my evenings?” Well, the Creston Concert Society can’t fill all your time, but can help with five of those evenings. The 2013-2014 season is an all-music extravaganza, with acts sure to fulfill your entertainment needs during the year. The season starts off with a rollicking fun performance by Cod Gone Wild on Sept. 28. Having an East Coast music style as their basis, the Cods beat it up with a modern funk rock rhythm section to create a unique, energetically modern blend of original, traditional and contemporary Celtic, Irish and Newfoundland music that is positively infectious, covering Irish traditional songs Banks of the Roses and Tell Me Ma, as well as some more recently written classics such as Dirty Old Town. This unique style comes from the melding of veteran musicians from diverse musical backgrounds such as folk, rock, jazz and funk, to create a modern Celtic sound with driving rhythms and tight vocal harmonies. The Bergmann Piano Duo, consisting of Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann, performs Nov. 4. Their dynamic and energetic performances of uniquely eclectic programs have inspired audiences for more than two decades in many parts of the world, including the United States, Italy, Germany, Holland, Greece and Canada, at international festivals including MusicFest Vancouver, the celebrated Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, and the Banff Arts Festival. Their recordings include Marcel’s arrangement of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells and a collection of

minimal music for multiple pianos also featuring Marcel’s compositions. Sultans of String, 2010 Juno Award nominees and “Canada’s ambassadors of musical diversity”, will thrill their audience on Jan. 30, 2014, with their global sonic tapestry of Spanish flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms and French manouche Gypsy jazz, celebrating musical fusion with warmth and virtuosity. Fiery violin dances with rumba and flamenco guitar with a funk bass lays down unstoppable grooves. Acoustic strings meet with electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound, while world rhythms excite audiences to their feet with the irresistible need to dance. A Canadian string super-group, Sultans of String includes six-string violinist and 2009 Juno Award nominee Chris McKhool (who has guest starred with Jesse Cook and Pavlo), duelling guitar wizards Kevin Laliberté (Jesse Cook) and Eddie Paton (Robert Michaels), bass masters Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk) and David Woodhead (Loreena McKennitt), and the jaw dropping talent of Cuban percussionists Chendy Leon and Alberto Suarez. Their repertoire includes original compositions, as well as covers such as Neil Young’s Heart of Gold and The Who’s Pinball Wizard. With his exciting blend of classical tenor sound with modern style, Ken Lavigne is a singer, composer, communicator and consummate entertainer, whose versatility commands ovations at every performance. He will charm his way into the hearts of Creston concertgoers on March 1 with his sincere delivery of ballads, show tunes and operatic classics. A founding member of both the Canadian Tenors and Romanza, his highly entertaining concert repertoire rang-

es from traditional ballads and musical theatre favourites to familiar classics and operatic arias (Loch Lomand, Northwest Passage, Hallelujah, The Music of the Night) interspersed with personal vignettes and background notes on the music delivered with the warm and audience-winning charm, along with his strong flair for comedy. The season closes on March 24 with ARC Ensemble. Over the last 10 years, the ARC (Artists of the Royal Conservatory) Ensemble has become one of Canada’s preeminent cultural ambassadors, raising international appreciation of the Royal Conservatory and Canada’s rich musical life. Its members are all senior faculty of the Glenn Gould School, with guest artists drawn from its most exceptional students and graduates. Its concerts and Grammynominated recordings are meticulously researched and assembled with rich supporting materials and are often augmented by lectures on their musical, political and social context, or included as part of larger themed festivals.

Documentary follows career of Secretariat’s jockey CRESTON AND DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Creston and District Public Library kicks off the fall 2013 season of its library film club with the showing of the National Film Board of Canada’s Secretariat’s Jockey, Ron Turcotte. This film is the remarkable story of Turcotte’s rise to fame in 1973, the fall that left him a paraplegic in 1978 — after an illustrious career with more than 3,000 victories — and his emotional journey back to the people and places that marked his life. The thoroughbred racer, Secretariat was and is a household name that for many defines everything that is great

about horse racing. Though his career was only 16 months long, Secretariat won the heart of the world as well as becoming the first Triple Crown champion in 25 years in 1973. Winning by 31 lengths, he set a world record that stands to this day. He has appeared on the cover of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated magazines, has been the subject of a major motion picture, and at the time was more popular than any celebrity. He appeared in 21 racing events, won 16 and finished in the money in all of his races but one- his first. Ron Turcotte, Secretariat’s jockey, is a legend in his own right. Turcotte was born in 1941 in Drummond, N.B., and

began his career in Toronto in 1959 and was soon wearing the silks and winning races. Turcotte became internationally famous in 1973 when he rode Secretariat to win the Triple Crown. He was North America’s leading stakes-winning jockey in 1972 and 1973. He became the first jockey since 1902 to win the Kentucky Derby back-to-back, and is the only jockey to ever have won five of six consecutive Triple Crown races. See Secretariat’s Jockey, Ron Turcotte at the Creston and District Public Library at 7 p.m. Sept. 10. Admission is free. Running time is 75 minutes. For more information, contact the library at 250-428-4141.
