Crash pushes Langley driver into pedestrian

CRANKING OUT THE WASH

MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

A 23-year-old Langley woman was involved in a serious Sept. 1 collision in Vancouver that has left a pedestrian fighting for his life. Vancouver Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash which saw two cars collide at the intersection at Main Street and 12 Avenue around 1 a.m. on Sunday. The VPD said one of those vehicles, driven by the Langley woman, veered onto on the sidewalk after the collision, striking a 38-year-old man who was standing there. A 49-year-old Vancouver woman was driving the other car. Both women were taken to hospital with minor injuries and have since been released. Investigators say one of the vehicles ran a red light to cause the crash. The man’s injuries have been described as life-threatening. VPD Const. Brian Montague said the victim is still unconscious suffering with spinal, chest and head injuries. Police haven’t indicated which driver may have been drinking. “The investigation is still ongoing,” said Montague.

Scooter stolen after arrest at drive-thru Langley man says police had no right to leave his only means of transportation behind MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

A Langley man was arrested while taking his motorized medical scooter through a fast food drive-thru this weekend. Phil Alison says he isn’t too bothered by the arrest, but it is the fact that after he was put in the police car, the officer left his scooter at the restaurant, and it

has since been stolen. “That scooter is my life,” said Alison, who suffers from nerve damage and can’t walk any distance without swelling up. “I went through the drive-thru to get a (coffee) when I was arrested and thrown in jail for the night. The officer left my scooter at the McDonald’s (in Willowbrook) where I was, and when the police went to get my scooter back, it was gone,” said Alison. He calls his motorized scooter his lifeline which he uses to get around town, to the food bank and to appointments. Alison has had many conversations with police since and with the restaurant but he said nobody is being held accountable for where his scooter is or if anything is going to be done about getting it back.

The start of the school year has been a power struggle for two Walnut Grove elementary schools. On Wednesday morning, students at Dorothy Peacock found themselves learning in the dark after a car took out a power pole in the area. The outage left numerous intersections in the area without traffic lights and more than 2,300 customers without power. On the first day of school, it was Topham students whose school lost power for the afternoon. Power went out to a large area of Walnut Grove from around noon until the end of the school day. It’s not known what caused the outage, said BC Hydro. Besides the torrential downpour that hit right as kids were heading to school on Tuesday, and the power outages, everything went well the first couple of days, said Langley School District spokesperson Ken Hoff.

Blueberry industry balked at Langley bylaw Government notes released under Freedom of Information rules show Langley could have instituted bird-trapping, but chose not to DAN FERGUSON Times Reporter

Some blueberry farmers have told Langley Township a bylaw that aims to limit the use of propane cannons unfairly singled them out, according to a June 17 provincial government briefing note released under freedom of information (FOI) regulations. The note also shows the Township of Langley could have instituted a bird trapping program to reduce the need for the controversial bird scare devices, but chose not to. The three-page document was prepared by agricultural ministry staff for minister Pat Pimm, who approved the bylaw the day after the note was prepared. The briefing note amounts to a brief executive summary of the process that produced the Langley bylaw which, among other things, requires blueberry farmers to get a $125-a-year licence to register their bird scare devices with the Township of Langley as well as post a notice before they use one. The briefing note and a letter to the Township mayor from the agriculture minister were released online in response to a request from an unnamed individual for “all correspondence between Langley Township and the Minister’s Office and all correspondence between the Minister and his Staff regarding Langley’s approval [of the bylaw]” between May 1 and June 30. The province routinely posts the results of FOI requests online at www.openinfo.gov.bc.ca. The ministry edited out two sections of the briefing note, citing privacy regulations. The briefing note says representatives of the blueberry industry supported “most elements” of the bylaw, but not those two requirements. “They have expressed concern that the registration requirement singles out their industry with an additional burden not carried by other agricultural industries under

the Farm Practices Protection Act,” the note says. “They are also concerned with the precedent of being required to post a sign at their driveway when using propane cannons.” According to the note, representatives of the horse industry, who have complained about the frightening effect the noisemakers have on local steeds, had little to say about the bylaw. However, an unnamed “local Langley horse group were [sic] quite critical that there were insufficient restrictions on the use of propane cannons.” The provincial agriculture ministry has been promoting “addressing starling population control” through trapping as a way of reducing the need for blueberry cannons by cutting the number of the berry-munching birds, the note observes. It suggests Langley Township could have won approval for such a program, but chose not to apply, noting the bylaw, as submitted, “stopped short of implementing additional measures such as starling trapping.” As well, it says the Township also had the option of adopting suggested provincial government guidelines for “edge planning,” which would require landscaping and, ideally, “spatial buffers” of 600 metres or more to separate farms from nearby residential developments. The briefing note also says the Township had the option of adopting provincial guidelines for residential uses on farmland which would restrict the size and location of such housing. Enforcement of the new regulations governing propane cannons in Langley Township began in July, following their final approval on June 24 by Langley Township council by a 7-1 vote. The bylaw sets escalating fines for violating the rules, $150 for a first offence, $350 for a second and $500 for a third and any subsequent offence.

33rd annual City of Langley Terry Fox Run is a pet project Everyone and their dog is invited to participate in this year’s Terry Fox Run in the City of Langley. “Many community events discourage people bringing their dogs, but not us,” said Run chair Lilianne Fuller. “We want to invite people to come out, support the event and bring along their best friend. “We just ask that the dogs be leashed and that owners pick up after their pets. Plastic bags will be provided by the City of Langley,” she said. To encourage participation, there will be an added incentive. For a small donation the management and staff at Brookswood K9 Design dog groomers will be on hand providing ‘puppy pedicures’. The 33rd annual Terry Fox Run takes place on Sunday, Sept. 15. The Langley City run will start at the Spirit Square in Douglas Park. This year’s event will have the same scenic 1K, 5K and 10K routes, so everyone at any fitness level can take part. Participants are invited to run, walk, ride or scoot. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the run begins at 10 a.m. The Lounge Brothers will be back in the park to entertain participants.

She will be providing by-donation grooming for canine participants in the Sept. 15 Terry Fox Run, which has the theme of ‘Everyone and their dog.’ All donations will go to the Terry Fox Foundation. In addition, there will be more entertainment along the route, including Dave the Musician, Michelle Drumfoot and others. There will be a concession stand onsite, offering hot dogs and hamburgers grilled by the Langley City firefighters. Peak H20 will be on hand with water and, because this is a festive event, the organizers have invited face painters and clowns.

The annual Terry Fox Run has raised more than $800 million for cancer research since 1980 and organizers note that 84 cents of each dollar raised goes to cancer research. “Join us on Sunday, Sept. 15 to honour a great Canadian hero, get some exercise and raise some money to combat this horrible disease,” added Fuller. push to re-open Riverview Hospital will be made at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention taking place in Vancouver Sept. 16 to 20. Maple Ridge council has indicated it will bring forward a resolution to re-open the psychiatric hospital, saying that closing it in the early 1990s — opting instead to help those with severe mental illness in their own communities — has resulted in “unacceptably poor outcomes for the most needy citizens.” It also has resulted in severe social and financial burdens on local governments. In the 1990s, the provincial government chose to switch gears on how to care for people with severe mental illness. Those living at Riverview were going to live within their own communities and be supported through housing and other social services. Community mental health facilities were built in several communities, including Langley, for long-term stays. The problem is there are far too few beds to meet the demand An “institution” to house the mentally ill conjures up visions of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and the painfully outdated Riverview model was, rightfully, fazed out. But the reality is that when it closed many people were pushed out without proper support. Far too many who were living at Riverview now find themselves on the Downtown Eastside — in many ways a much worse hell. Others moved back to their hometowns, where many have ended up homeless, often self medicating with illegal drugs. Police resources are over burdened dealing with the severely mentally ill. In Langley, one man in his 20s regularly attempts suicide, bringing in not just local police but sometimes emergency response teams because he can be armed at times. Police spend countless hours bringing mentally ill patients to emergency rooms. And hospital psych wards have been criticized by many parents and caregivers for releasing their sick loved ones too soon. Too many jail cells are housing the mentally ill. The system is overburndened and in the end it is our entire society who suffers. Maple Ridge council suggests a “modern centre of excellence” and that is exactly what society should demand. As minister of housing, Aldergrove-Fort Langley MLA Rich Coleman is in charge of helping decide Riverview’s fate. If you think the province needs to revisit Riverview, this is probably the best time to let him know.

ith all the busyness of the summer months now over, September is a great time to fall back into a routine. And the provincial government and unions representing teachers and school support staff appear to have their annual routines down pat. September, especially since their labour disputes seem to be neverending in recent years, is when both sides of the bargaining table argue that the other party is unco-operative and doesn’t truly have students’ interests at heart. This annual back-and-forth of finger-pointing just tells us neither side truly believes it’s all about the children. Accusatory bargaining in a public forum does nothing to help the situation we’re faced with — a situation where the kids truly should be the priority. We agree with both sides when they say a deal needs to be reached soon. We agree when they both say that deal has to happen without disrupting students in the classroom. And we agree that education is essential to our kids’ futures, and is essential in growing our economy. But we can’t be teaching our kids to play nice and do good when we aren’t walking the talk ourselves. It’s the worst-kept secret that labour relations of any kind are self-serving to some extent. The province and the teachers both need to quit pretending that they’re only fighting for the kids. They need to honestly acknowledge their differences and what they’re fighting for, and find a compromise that isn’t going to negatively impact the goings on in the classroom. Back-to-school season should be a happy, positive experience for everyone. That hasn’t been the case for many years now, and we need to get resolutions soon for the teachers’ and support staff’s contracts. Otherwise, we’re going to have yet another negative school year that could be severely impacted by two massive labour disputes. Let’s do this for the kids. — Victoria News The Langley Times is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. Remember that Friday night is the night when these crowds typically descend on the downtown core of Langley City to cruise, to show off their cars and to look at the other cars doing the same. At this time I would like to remind people of a few things. We are all hosts to the visitors. It is our job to make them feel welcome and want to come back. Please, be friendly and helpful to them. On Friday night it is critical that we are all on our best behaviour to encourage responsible fun on the streets that stays away from illegal activities. This is not a sanctioned event, but a spontaneous and informal gathering of people who are excited about the coming event. Please remember to obey the rules, stay on sidewalks if you are on foot and leave alcohol out of the plans. Enjoy the cars and their sounds from the safety of the sidewalks, and keep your kids safe, too. If you are driving, remember that the

police will be out in force to stop any problems that may arise. This includes the clamp down on any kind of showboating, dangerous driving, burn-outs, and mixing alcohol and driving to name a few things. We want this to be a safe and enjoyable evening for everybody so that all those people are able to attend and enjoy the massive show planned for Saturday, Sept. 7. We know from experience that any kind of showboating that is observed or reported will result in immediate and punitive actions by the police. They don’t want to make anybody unhappy, but they are there to keep the peace and to make sure that the public is not endangered by foolish acts. A serious accident could potentially put an end to the Cruise-in, which would be a negative outcome for all the charities that receive the benefit of it, not to forget the loss of the fun and excitement that is the Cruise-In. Let’s all work to make this the best ever Cruise-In weekend. I look forward to seeing you at the show. Eric Taylor president, Langley Good Times Cruise-In Society

Police will be out in force during this weekend’s Cruise-In event. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to be cautious and obey the rules to ensure that everyone has a good time and stays safe.

Development is eroding historic village’s heritage Editor: I cannot believe the seeming lack of interest our province is showing in the desecration of the Fort Langley heritage village. For many years, families and visitors have come to the little town to enjoy the unique 1858 fort, the excellent museums, the heritage CN station, the antique and art shops, the Kwantlen Nation’s gallery and all the activities on the mighty Fraser River. To perpetuate this experience for the future the village of Fort Langley was designated a heritage area by the then council

with an official community plan and bylaws which passed unanimously. Now, the present council has gone against their own bylaws, their heritage advisory board and their planning staff and passed one large building which does not conform to the bylaws in place. Three other planned buildings have been carefully planned to conform to all official plans, bylaws and the heritage mandate. It seems unfair and irresponsible to cater to one developer over others.

Also, 80 per cent of the community spoke against the plan and 900 signed a petition which was ignored by the council, who supposedly represent the people. Now we are not only covering up valuable Fraser Valley farmland with development, but we are robbing our future citizens and grandchildren of their sample of B.C.’s history — the village which grew up around the Fort Langley national historic site. Bays Blackhall Director, LHS, CN Station site.

America is welcome to keep its gun culture Editor: It was with consternation that yesterday, I received a local flyer with a full page ad for assault rifles and other restricted weapons. I should point out that I grew up in a hunting culture, I am ex-military, and am a sometime small game hunter myself, but I can think of no conceivable reason for civilians to possess tactical weapons with large magazines, and bayonets. I recently returned from a trip to Colorado. I find it supremely ironic that in the so-called “Land of the Free”, there are so many security restrictions and cultural curbs based on the fear of gun violence, yet in the name of freedom, they dare not tackle the thorny issue of reasonable restrictions on their Second Amendment rights. I sincerely hope we do not reach that slippery slope, where we feel the need to “arm all the kindergarten teachers” here in Canada. Al French Langley

Transit police are not glorified ‘fare takers’ Editor: Re: Transit Police are overpaid fare takers, (The Times, Aug. 20). It is unfortunate that your paper has made transit police a scapegoat for the bigger issues at TransLink, and amplified the misinformation perpetuated by Jordan Bateman. Independent reviews such as the 2012 VPD Operational Review of Transit Police have all found that transit police provide good value for what they’re paid (actually less than Vancouver, Victoria and The

Abbotsford). They have the same training and qualifications as municipal police forces, and are subject to the same complaints processes. The fact is that the cost of policing per transit passenger boarding has remained unchanged since 2008. More importantly, transit police play a pivotal role keeping the system safe for passengers. Saying that the officers “have few responsibilities” is patently untrue. Transit police do investigate crimes on the

bus system and would like very much to expand their work there. The limits on that, quite frankly, are of TransLink’s making, not of the transit police. Even so, last year transit police opened 18,255 files and had a higher-than-average clearance rate. A 2013 University of the Fraser Valley study found that transit police fare enforcement duties enabled them to arrest hundreds of offenders with

outstanding warrants. The report stated: “for the most part, these individuals were recidivist, serious, chronic offenders who were at-large in the community.” Recently, transit police arrested a man for performing an indecent act near a New Westminster daycare centre. Pushing for a system without transit police is, frankly, dangerous. Ultimately, the real problem lies with the province’s unwillingness to grasp the issue of TransLink funding.

The region’s transit needs are growing far beyond what paltry savings could come from salaries. But instead of showing leadership and working towards meaningful, sustainable funding solutions, the provincial government is choosing to pass the buck with a nebulous, ill-conceived referendum on funding. Heather Lee, vice-president, Combined Units, Canadian Office and Professional Employees union, local 378

When asked on Tuesday if it was a good time for an interview, the new president of the Langley Good Times Cruise-In Society started laughing, then he said yes. The last few weeks leading up to the Saturday, Sept. 7 event have been a busy time for Eric Taylor and the other volunteers with the society. So busy that Taylor, owner of Valley Cut Steel, took this week off from work to better concentrate on Cruise-In preparations and was beginning to think he should have taken the week following as well in order to recover. “The amount of work that this takes is astonishing,” Taylor said. “The people that we have doing this show, I don’t know how a small crew [like them] can do this.” The new president took over this year after Riccardo Sestito ended a seven-year run in the top job. So far, Taylor said, things seem to be going well. “Everything is coming along as we expected,” he said. About 500 cars have registered for the charity event, down slightly from last year’s record turnout. The weather forecast was calling for cloudy skies on Saturday with a small chance of rain. And then there is the Friday night before the Cruise-In, when hot rod owners usually stage an informal drive through Langley City. Taylor made a public plea (see letters, page 9) for good behavior, saying the preliminary to the actual Cruise-In should not be an excuse for public drunkenness, or doing doughnuts and burn-outs on residential streets. “I don’t want anyone to come along and spoil our party,” Taylor told The Times. Bad behavior was one of the reasons the Cruise-In was cancelled in 2010. Since then, a heavy police presence has been a regular feature of the Friday lead-in.

Grandparent’s Day is September 8!

Congratulations to our winning grandparents Linda and Gordy Goranko, (at left), who were nominated by their grandchildren Skyler and Daniel. “Our grandparents, Linda and Gordy Goranko, are the best because they come to visit us on the Island as much as they can. They take us to fun places in Langley when we visit too, like Krause Berry Farms and the Zoo. They also take us to Birch Bay, read us stories, and help our mommy look after us when daddy is away working as a fisherman. A better way of life...

Hi my name is Johnny and I want to tell you about my Grandma. She is the most amazing Grandma ever. She was the first person to hold me when I was born! She spends all her free time with me. She plays with me all the time and holds me when I have my naps. Some of our favourite things to do are read books, dig outside, go to the park, walk to the end of my street and look at the diggers, go down slides and play with my animals. I love it when she lets me play with the hose and water all the plants in her backyard. She always keeps me entertained at hockey while Mommy and Daddy watch my big brother play. I’m lucky to have such a young, active and fun Grandma so that she can do all these things with me (I’m hard to keep up to sometimes!) She helps my Mommy so much and always gives her lots of breaks and have a nap sometimes too! I never mind when Mommy and Daddy are away if I get to stay with my Grandma! I love my Grandma so much! Thank you Grandma for making me and my big brother the luckiest grandsons in the whole world!

Parkinson’s SuperWalk is Sunday A Langley folk band will perform a song written in honour of their grandfather at this year’s Parkinson’s SuperWalk. The event begins Sunday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m. at Fort Langley’s Riverside Community Room (9273 Glover Rd). The Prevailing Westerlies, made up of members Rhiannon Wallace, Roan Wallace, Margaret Lees and Kirsten Kwong will perform a song they wrote along with Trenewan Wallace and David Lees entitled “Grandpa’s Song.â€?  It was written in honour of their grandpa David Wallace who passed away in 2012 from Parkinson’s.  The whole community is encouraged to come out to the walk which is in its second year in Langley. It’s difficult to estimate how many people in Langley live with Parkinson’s, said the Parkinson’s Society. There is an

The Prevailing Westerlies will perform ‘Grandpa’s Song’ at this weekend’s SuperWalk for Parkinson’s. active support group in the area that meets every third Friday at the Douglas Recreation Centre. “Many people, unfortunately,

live in shame due to the general lack of public knowledge about the disease, said Laura Darch, the society’s communications manager. “The physical symptoms leave some feeling embarrassed to be outside. One of the reasons SuperWalk is important is to raise awareness, but also to bring people with PD out of the shadows with the support of friends, family and the local community. Organizations, businesses, families and friends will walk together and celebrate teamwork while raising funds for Parkinson’s research, support services and education. The SuperWalk is the society’s largest national fundraising event. In B.C., the goal is to beat 2012’s record of $595,000 and nationwide, the aim is to raise $3.3 million. Participants can register by visiting www.parkinson.bc.ca.

Live, work and play at MOSAIC’s Fremont Blue By Kerry Vital

MOSAIC Homes is bringing a touch of colour to Port Coquitlam with Fremont Blue, their new townhome development that’s a paradise for outdoor lovers. The second phase starts sales this month. “This is the most exciting property today,” says MOSAIC’s Geoff Duyker. “It’s just a beautiful place to live.” Fremont Blue is bordered by the Pitt River, the 25-kilometre

Traboulay Trail and park land. “We’ve had people stop by the Home Store on their bikes after getting off the trail,” Duyker says. “It’s really rare to be able to live in this kind of setting.” The homes themselves include open-plan layouts with plenty of space to relax or entertain, oversized windows and nine-foot ceilings throughout the main living areas to maximize your sense of space. “We are doing what we do well in terms of creating beautiful

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

housing,” Duyker says. “MOSAIC has a long track record of building sought-after homes.” Fremont Blue will be part of the master-planned Fremont community, which will include shopping and restaurants. You’ll also be close by schools, leisure and recreation opportunities, as well as the convenience of the Port Mann Bridge, or commuting to Burnaby or Vancouver without having to cross the river. “The whole neighbourhood is going to look a lot different in a few years,” says Duyker. “You could literally live, work and play here. This is the most significant master-planned development in the region.” Buyers will also have access to the Fremont Riverclub, which will include 12,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenities, including a lap pool, outdoor cooking area, gym, fitness studio and a great room with a big-screen TV, lounge, pool table, card tables and entertainment kitchen and bar, among many other things. Homes start in the mid-$300,000s. For more information, visit mosaichomes.com, call 604-552-0319 or visit the Home Store at 2332 Ranger Lane, open between noon and 6 p.m.

Kitsilano is a vibrant neighbourhood, and Kits360 is perfectly situated to take advantage of every amenity, above right. Among the gorgeous features you’ll find in your new home at Kits360 are stainless-steel appliances and high-gloss cabinetry, below right.

A well-rounded life at Kits360 By Kerry Vital

Kitsilano is one of Vancouver’s most desirable areas, with its array of amenities and outdoor activities all in one place. Intergulf Development Group is now bringing an equally enticing offer to the neighbourhood with Kits360. “Kits is one of the best neighbourhoods in Vancouver,” says project manager Macartney Greenfield. “We named the project Kits360 because there are amenities in literally every direction.” That’s no exaggeration. Kits360 is just steps from the 5th Avenue Cinemas, shopping on West 4th Avenue and recreation on the seawall. You’re also minutes from South

Granville, Yaletown, Granville Island and downtown Vancouver, as well as Kits Beach, Kits Pool and the boardwalk trail. “Kits is a very vibrant community,” Greenfield says. “And that atmosphere can be found in the community of Kits360 as well.” The homes are completed and move-in ready now, which Greenfield says is one of the big draws for buyers. “There’s been a lot of excitement around completion,” she says. “Many happy homeowners have already moved in, and there’s already a great energy within the building. This is definitely an opportunity you can’t miss. It’s a phenomenal place to live.” The final release of inventory at Kits360 features just 15 two-bedroom suites and penthouse homes, ranging from 776 to about 978 square feet. Many homes feature fantastic ocean, mountains or city views and space for outdoor entertaining. “They’re really the cream of the crop. The floorplans available give you lots of flexibility depending on how you live your life,”

Greenfield says, noting that both downsizers and growing families alike have found their dream home at Kits360. “Our floorplans are designed to make condo living a reality for our buyers with flex spaces for their home office, nursery, or whatever they may need,” she says. Each home is spacious and open, with plenty of room to entertain or relax. The kitchens are particularly beautiful. “The kitchen is really the jewel of your home,” Greenfield says. “It’s a huge focus for people and Intergulf did it right.” The stainless-steel appliances are complemented by a modern stone backsplash high-gloss cabinetry and stone countertops. “You can spend tons of time entertaining in here,” Greenfield says. You’ll find engineered laminate wood flooring throughout your new space, as well as over-height ceilings in most homes and a stackable washer/dryer. The bathrooms hold luxurious soaker tubs and plenty of thoughtful details.

“Older homes in Kits don’t have these features,” Greenfield says. “This is a rare opportunity to get this calibre of living and this address.” The amenities at Kits360 are truly topnotch, including an expansive rooftop terrace and outdoor barbecue with a garden, lounge and kitchen area, as well as a courtyard water feature and two fully equipped fitness centres. COM·MU·NI·TY:

N ! W O

[defined by]: the desire to live in a place

animated by people rather than things

HOWEVER YOU DEFINE COMMUNITY, WE CALL IT AN EASY WAY TO MEET AND CONNECT WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS. It’s just one of the many reasons residents love calling Morgan Crossing home. It could be at the chalk art festival on Main Street (see below!), or one of the many other events, like movie nights in the summer or resident parties. How about chatting with fellow dog owners at the Morgan Crossing Dog Park, or meeting during a class or workout at Steve Nash Sports Club. Or just hanging out at the coffee shops and restaurants, at a wine tasting at Everything Wine, or on a bench on Main Street. You’ll see and meet lots of the people who live and work at Morgan Crossing… and maybe even ask out your cute neighbour, Amy. Because loving where you live should be about more than just loving your stunning condo (though we have lots of those too!).

Langley firm hires giant jet to haul helicopters Russian-built An-124 Antonov cargo jet loads four Eurocopter AS332L helicopters overhauled by Vector Aerospace

DAN FERGUSON Times Reporter

Vector Aerospace in Langley hired one of the world’s biggest cargo jets to haul four upgraded helicopters to customers in Australia and Afghanistan. On Aug. 28, the company loaded the four Eurocopter AS332L Helicopters aboard an An-124 Antonov at Vancouver International Airport. The four-engine, 226-footlong Russian-built Antonov is the third heaviest flying freighter in the world, able to carry more than 100 tons of cargo (The Boeing 747-8F freighter is number two and the Antonov An-225 is number one). The four-and-a-half ton helicopters were updated by the Langley facility with new technology including safety enhancements such as night vision technology, cockpit voice recorders and flight data recorders. Two will be used on

offshore oil rig servicing contracts in Australia and the other two are being sent to Afghanistan for utility operations. “The fact that we are using a special aircraft such as the Antonov to expedite delivery to our customers is a testament to the importance of the roles these helicopters will play in their designated missions,” Vector vice-president of operations Elvis Moniz said. Located at the Langley airport, the Vector helicopter repair facility carries out a wide range of major helicopter repairs, inspections and overhauls, including rebuilds and refurbishments, airframe and avionic refits and upgrades and custom interiors and modifications. It is part of the larger Vector Aerospace company that operates facilities in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, South Africa and Australia. Vector Aerospace is planning a newer and bigger helicopter

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT UT

Five-year bans from entering U.S. under legal challenge B.C. chamber calls expedited removal power ‘draconian’ JEFF NAGEL Black Press

A provision that lets American border guards arbitrarily bar Canadians from entering the U.S. for at least five years is under fire from B.C. business leaders who see it as a major threat to cross-border enterprise. The B.C. Chamber of Commerce has joined a lawsuit filed in the U.S. that aims to quash the so-called “expedited removal” process. Typically, B.C. residents barred from entry under the provision have been deemed by U.S. border staff to have lied under questioning about the reason for their visit. “It seems like it’s pretty arbitrary in its application,” said Bellingham immigration lawyer Greg Boos, who has filed a submission in a U.S. court on behalf of the B.C. chamber, the Whatcom County chamber and other stakeholders. Expedited removal consists of an automatic ban on entering the U.S. for either five years or for life and there’s no avenue for appeal to the courts. Boos said B.C. businesses with key staffers who service equipment they’ve sold

to American clients have been barred, causing chaos for the affected firms. “If it was applied to the CEO of a B.C. company doing business in the United States, it would be disastrous for that company,” he said. Boos said bans on B.C. residents through the provision have been sporadic so far, but there have been signs its use will grow. Some “hard core” border guards use it more than others, he said, and one in Blaine boasted about denying more Canadians entry than any other staffer. “This has a chilling effect on cross-border trade and commerce,” Boos said, adding it’s open to abuse and discrimination. He’s confident the legal challenge should succeed because the U.S. enabling regulations indicate Canadian nonimmigrants aren’t to be subjected to expedited removal. The only problem, he said, is persuading the U.S. ninth circuit court of appeals that it has the jurisdiction to rule that border staff are overstepping their powers. Oral arguments were held last week but a ruling isn’t expected for six to nine months. Blaine lawyer Len Saunders said he’s

seen perhaps one in 100 bans reversed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) staff at the post where it was imposed, but beyond that recourse is virtually impossible. “The CBP officer is judge, jury and hangman,” Saunders said. He’s seen a case where a B.C. resident with copies of his resume in his vehicle was barred after guards decided he was looking for work rather than vacationing. “Usually it happens because they think the person is coming down to do something other than what they claim.” Saunders recounts another case involving a retired Abbotsford church minister who was regularly crossing the border to go to Lynden to cover for the local minister for three weeks.

The first two times he merely said he was visiting the church when asked his reason for coming to the U.S. The third time he said he was covering for the colleague. Although the minister was being paid only a small per diem and didn’t consider himself to be working in the U.S., CBP officers decided he’d lied to them the previous two trips and banned him for five years. “If they can give an expedited removal to a minister from Abbotsford, they can give one to anyone,” Saunders said. “This draconian regime flies in the face of open borders and Canada’s long-standing friendship and trading relationship with our neighbours to the south,” B.C. Chamber of Commerce president John Winter said. “These harsh border rules need to be fixed.”

community

Langley is his middle name Volunteer shows pride in community by helping keep it clean Gwang-soo “Langley” Kim likes to keep his community clean. “I can’t stand to see garbage in the area,” Kim said, speaking with his son Julian acting as translator. “Homeowners don’t throw garbage in their homes, but we throw it outside. This is our house. You and I are all together. Langley is your house.” Kim came to the Township of Langley from South Korea with his family in 2002 and settled in Willoughby. The former PE teacher adopted the English name “Langley” to show his pride in his new home. For 10 years, Kim picked up litter on his own, making it part of his early morning walks. “Some people looked at me like I was a poor man when I was picking up garbage,” he recalled. “One woman pulled up and asked if I’d like to take her recycling. One gentleman gave me two quarters.” Then one day Kim saw people using long pickers to grab the garbage. They were outfitted in bright yellow vests identifying them as Adopt-A-Program

volunteers. Adopt-a-Program is a Township of Langley initiative that gets people thinking about their surroundings and keeping it clean by allowing them to “adopt” a street, park, trail, or creek. The Township supplies clean-up materials and arranges for the removal and disposal of the garbage, and individuals, families, organizations, and businesses are encouraged to conduct regular clean ups of their adopted areas. “I hadn’t known about Adopt-A-Program,” said Kim, who was impressed with what he saw. “It seemed so much safer and calls the attention of drivers.” Kim signed up for Adopt-AStreet in 2012, and now people who pass by slow down and give him an encouraging wave in recognition of the good job he is doing. “He works extremely hard,” said program co-ordinator Tess White. “Our Adopt-A-Program volunteers make a direct impact on the cleanliness of the Township by not only removing litter, but also setting a strong example for the rest of

the community.” While Kim has officially adopted 204 Street from 68 to 72 Avenue, he also cleans up any and all streets where there is a need. “It’s my hobby, my lifestyle,” said Kim. By the time everyone else is up and going about their day, the garbage has been cleared from the streets he looks after. “They don’t see it,” he said proudly. “That’s from me.” Relatives are also enlisted to help. “My son-in-law is a lawyer in downtown Vancouver,” he said with a grin. “Sometimes he visits my house and he has to help me.” Kim sees the waste that people leave behind, and the damage it does to the natural world. “My heart is sometimes depressed,” he said, noting that he once came across a large big bird with a plastic pop can ring around its head. He took the plastic off and freed the bird. The Township of Langley’s Adopt-A-Program is always looking for volunteers. For more information about the program or to take part, contact adopt@tol.ca or 604532-7300.

Colleen Webber and the rest of the Trinity Western Spartans women’s soccer team begin the Canada West season tomorrow (Friday) in Vancouver against the UBC Thunderbirds. The Spartans open the season ranked number one in the country.

Roll 2 rolls to another title

The team that stays together, wins together. “We have known each other for probably about 10 years,” said Jason Wilson, the coach and manager of Roll 2. “We are pretty much like family.” And over the weekend in Calgary, Roll 2 captured the NSA (National Canadian Slo-Pitch) Canada Open A World Series title. It was the second consecutive year the Langley team has done so.

“That was our goal going into nationals,” Wilson said. “We walked into Calgary ready to defend our title with a target on our backs. “(And) we felt good going in.” There were 190 co-ed teams competing in Calgary for Canadian titles in the eight different divisions. And Roll 2 were dominant in their title run. They outscored the competition 99-36 going a perfect 7-0 and winning five of those games via the mercy rule. That includes the championship

“Every time we start a season, it is an opportunity to write a new story,” explained head coach Graham Roxburgh. “We have similar cast members and some new cast members so it will be a great challenge and we will be up for it.” The Trinity Western Spartans, who won the CIS national women’s soccer championship last November, open the 2013 season ranked No. 1 in the country. They return 11 of the 14 players who took part in the CIS gold medal match. “We return so many of our good core and yet there are some pieces that we lost that are going to need to be replaced and retooled,” Roxburgh said. One of the biggest changes for the squad is in goal where after five seasons — and three national titles — Trinity Western will have a new starting goalkeeper following the graduation of Kristen Funk. “Whoever is playing has big shoes to fill but we feel like we are pretty solid in that position.” The likely candidates are returnee Bailey Williams-Kapels and transfer Rachel Bedek, who spent the past four seasons with the Carleton Ravens, before moving west for her final season. The Spartans also lost a pair of key attacking outside backs in Jilian Dietrich and Nikki Bryne. But that just opens the door for others to take on more prominent roles. “We feel like we have some players ready to step into new roles,” Roxburgh said. “We are going to be a different team but we are going to be as strong and attack minded as we have been in the past.” The team should be aided by the return of a trio of players who are coming back off of knee injuries: Sarah-Kim Bergeron, Nikki Wright and Jenna Di Nunzio.

“Those three players, if healthy, give us so many attacking options,” the coach said. Last season’s leading scorer, Canada West rookie of the year Krista Gommeringer (13 goals, 22 points in 12 games) is back and should play a big role in the Spartan offence. The team may be hard pressed to duplicate last season’s dominant performance. They outscored their foes 44-4 in 12 Canada West league games and then went 6-0 in the post-season, scoring 10 times and only conceding a pair of goals. Roxburgh knows that the competition in the Canada West has only gotten tougher and that his team will once again have a target on their backs. “We are going to have to face that we are the reigning champions and people want to knock us off,” he said. But ultimately, the season will not be deemed a success or failure based on whether or not the team captured another CIS banner. “We have never measured national championships as the ultimate (definition) of success, or pinnacle,” Roxburgh said. It is always more than the soccer, it is the things we do away from the field, the unity we try to create within our program, the desire to be successful in all things, on and off the field, that would be the litmus test or the measure of success. “And then obviously to see young players come into our program and grow as previous players have done, that is a success as well.” The Spartans, who started their training camp in Guatemala last month, wrapped up the preseason on Saturday with a 3-1 home loss to the Western Washington Vikings. It was Trinity Western’s only loss in six exhibition games (5-10). The team opens the Canada West regular season on Saturday (Sept. 7) when they travel to Vancouver to face the No. 10 UBC Thunderbirds. The Spartans first home game at Rogers Field is on Sept. 13 versus the Victoria Vikes.

final, which lasted just five innings and ended with a 14-4 victory over the Edmonton Nationals. “We were just lights out (over the tournament),” Wilson said. This was the team’s fourth appearance at nationals. They finished second in 2010 and third in 2011 and then won the last two titles. The team has played together for eight years and plays out of the Langley Mixed Slo-Pitch League. They won the Spring title this past summer, compiling a 19-2-1 record with a run differential of +138. Remarkably, this is considered one

of the team’s poorer seasons, Wilson said, as they are used to losing or tying just one game over the course of a season. One of the team’s secrets to its success is the fact there is little turnover. “For the last eight years, I have only picked up one or two people a year, if that,” Wilson said. The co-ed team has 10 males and five females. There are also four coaches. ••••• Another Langley team, Adrenaline, came in fifth in the Open B Division.

Kalem Scott and the rest of the Trinity Western Spartans men’s soccer team begin the Canada West season tomorrow (Friday) in Abbotsford against the Fraser Valley Cascades.

The long road to the post-season — and hopefully a return to the CIS national championships — begins this weekend. “It is a rigorous campaign,” said Trinity Western Spartans men’s soccer coach Pat Rohla. “Every weekend is a tournament: you have to be battleready. “There is lots of attrition because of injuries and the format of the league, as well as the style of soccer (that the teams) play.” During the 2012

after three-year absence

campaign, the Spartans lost just once during Canada West play, compiling a record of 9-1-4. But in the league playoffs, decimated by injuries, the team went 1-2 and placed fourth, denying themselves a spot at the CIS national championships. The Spartans had made the CIS tournament for five straight years from 2006 to 2010, but has failed to make it since then. But Rohla says the team can’t get too far ahead of itself and instead needs to focus on securing one of the six postseason berths to the conference playoffs. “That’s our goal; if we can get to Canada West, we will have a chance,” he said. “(But) every game is going to be difficult. There are no weak sisters in the league, everyone will play hard, play aggressive.”

The Spartans are down a pair of big men in forwards Spencer Schmidt and Andre Costa. But they did add German-born striker Dominic Reinold, who Rohla calls a “program changer.” The six-foot-three Reinold spent two seasons in the U.S. playing collegiately. He is expected to team up with the speedy Jarvis Ambaka, a 2012 conference all-star. Ambaka led the team with eight goals and 11 points in 2012. Together, they are expected to provide Trinity Western with a ‘thunder and lightning’ tandem up front, which should create fits for the opposition. The midfield will be led by third-year captain Brayden Gant, a Canada West first team all-star and CIS second team allCanadian in 2012. He will be joined

by another returnee, Mitchell Rohla to form the team’s core in the middle of the park. Carlos del Aquila and Sam Delfts, both returning players, and newcomer Elie Gindo will compete for starting roles alongside Gant and Rohla. The back-line will be a young unit with the loss of Brayden Volkenant. Besides fifthyear centre-back Rhys Volkenant, the Spartans back four will be made up of first, second and third-year players. Returning starters Taylor Johnson and Kalem Scott will slot into positions while rookie Jonah Reinhard should see some starting minutes. Beyond that, it will be third-year defender Andrew Dobbie and first-year Matt Kasteel fighting for playing time. And in goal, it

should be fourthyear keeper Evan Lowther and secondyear Andrew Hicks competing for playing time. Lowther played 10 of the team’s 14 games in 2012. The Spartans went 2-0-2 during the preseason. “We picked up a few injuries, which will cause the other players to fill in some of the blanks,” Rohla said. “But even with that, we have been playing some decent soccer.” Trinity Western opens the season with a pair of road games this weekend: tomorrow (Friday) at the Fraser Valley Cascades in Chilliwack and then Sunday in Victoria against the Vikes. The team’s home opener at Rogers Field is set for Sept. 14. It is the back half of a home-and-home series with the UBC Thunderbirds.

Big things expected for Rivermen GARY AHUJA Times Sports

Rankings are just rankings, but it looks like big things are expected for the Langley Rivermen junior A hockey club. The Rivermen open hockey season season ranked 15th in the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s top-20 preseason rankings. They are also third among teams from the B.C. Hockey League, behind only the Penticton Vees (second) and Vernon Vipers (fifth). “It is nice to be recognized but it really doesn’t mean much at this point,” said Bobby Henderson, who begins his second season as the team’s head coach. Last year’s group made the BCHL post-season but they lost in the opening round to the Surrey Eagles. Henderson called that a step in the right direction but added this year the expectations are even greater. “Over the past couple of years, we have laid the foundation (but) our goal is to win a championship this year,” he said. And the pieces are in place to make it a reality. The Rivermen boast a strong returning core with a dozen of the 22 players having played for Langley last season. The team did lose a couple of key players — Mario Puskarich, who won the Brett Hull Trophy as the BCHL’s top scorer and Evan Campbell, who was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers and is now playing NCAA hockey — so their 61 goals and 155 points will need to be replaced. “I think we are a pretty well balanced team this year,” Henderson said, pointing out that players like James Robinson, Matt Ustaski, Evan Anderson and Mitch McLain should lead the continued, PAGE 48
