Police standoff as officers search for weapons
Front-yard brawl closes King George Tracy Holmes Staff Reporter
A busy South Surrey road was closed for hours Sunday evening after a fight outside a home in the 2600-block of King George Boulevard. A man and a woman were taken to hospital after suffering minor injuries in the altercation. What triggered the brawl and exactly who was involved remains unclear. “We’re still trying to clarify a lot of the stories we’re getting, or not getting,” Cpl. Bert Paquet
said Wednesday, noting three “persons of interest” have been identified. Police were alerted to the trouble around 6:45 p.m. by residents who called 911 to report a fight – possibly involving weapons – in the front yard of a two-storey home. Several people were taken into custody, however, a standoff ensued when one person ran back into the house. Officers with the Emergency Response Team surrounded the home. Witnesses reported seeing a man on his knees in the front yard. Video
footage shows officers order a shirtless man to crawl to them, at which point he was cuffed. Paquet said alcohol was a factor. “This is not being pursued as a drug case, but more of potentially an assault or weaponsrelated investigation,” he said. King George was closed between 24 Avenue and 152 Street, and police secured the scene overnight to obtain a search warrant. While weapons were a focus of the search, investigators would not disclose if any were recovered.

Questions at U.S. border
International confusion
Marijuana disclosure blocks entry
Liberal leader ‘inadmissible’ Jeff Nagel Black Press

It seems honesty is not always the best policy for B.C. residents attempting to cross the border into the U.S. So says White Rock’s Jessica Goldstein, who was told she was “inadmissible” after she and some friends – headed to see the Dave Matthews Band at the Gorge – tried to enter the U.S. at the Pacific Highway crossing on Saturday. When asked by a female customs officer ❝I have been asked “have you used drugs, ever?” Goldthe question before, stein fessed up and I’ve always been that she’d smoked honest… They’ve marijuana the week always let us go.❞ before. While representaJessica Goldstein tives of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will not speak specifically to her case, it’s evident the admission was enough to fall afoul of beefedup federal enforcement of U.S. marijuana laws in the wake of successful state initiatives in Washington and Colorado legalizing possession of small amounts of pot. The White Rock-born-and-raised Goldstein, 30, said her honest answer prompted “three hours of interrogation and background checks.” She said that even though her truck was searched and nothing was found, she was denied entry because she had admitted she had smoked marijuana in the past.

Jessica Goldstein says her honesty about marijuana use has come at a great price at the border. “I wasn’t hiding anything – I wasn’t breaking the law,” she said. “I have no previous charges or criminal record.” CBP public-affairs officer Michael Milne, in

Federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s admission he smoked marijuana after becoming an MP – and the ensuing flurry of similar disclosures by other Canadian politicians – has a U.S. immigration lawyer shaking his head. “I couldn’t believe it when I saw him admit to it,” said Len Saunders. The Blaine, Wash. lawyer says Trudeau and any other admitted Canadian pot smokers – high profile or not – should expect to be refused entry to the U.S. “Justin Trudeau is inadmissable to the United States,” Saunders said. “He’s admitted to use of an illegal substance. If he’s elected prime minister, he can’t come into the U.S. Justin Trudeau pot admission without a waiver.” Saunders warned that earlier this year he was seeing large numbers of B.C. residents permanently denied entry to the U.S. after they admitted to past marijuana use when questioned by American border agents. Washington State’s vote in late 2012 to legalize, tax and sell marijuana has created confusion, leading some B.C. residents to believe pot is now a nonissue when heading south. In fact, Saunders said, the drug remains illegal under U.S. federal law, and someone with no criminal record i see page 5

While transit expansion remains a concern, it is incrementally improving. The city is determined to not just talk about Surrey City Centre but to act as a catalyst for change. A new library has already opened, and SFU’s Surrey campus has changed the dynamics of the Whalley area. No longer are Surrey densities solely marked by the number of unauthorized suites. Instead, townhouse and apartment developments have sprung up in areas where such densities once seemed unlikely. In housing, Surrey has moved forward as a city in a more deliberate way than Vancouver, where there is increased densities around False Creek, with the rest of the city still dotted with singlefamily homes. While there are still serious needs in education and healthcare infrastructure, Surrey has advanced significantly in these two critical areas. Surrey would not have the attributes of a city if citizens didn’t buy into the notion. They embrace the concept because they want to have reasons to be proud of where they live. While Surrey will have many challenges going forward, a lot of the hard work in getting from gangly teen to confident adult has taken place in the past 20 years. SPCA advises rewording of resolution so that dog distress doesn’t have to be proven
Surrey to revise anti-tethering proposal Kevin Diakiw Black Press
Surrey is proposing changes in provincial law governing the tethering of animals at an upcoming meeting of municipalities. At this month’s Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) convention, Surrey is proposing a provincial law be introduced that bans tethering or chaining pets in yards due to the hardship it causes them. However, BC SPCA spokeswoman Marcie Moriarty says anticruelty legislation covering tethering exists already. The problem comes in proving whether the tethering is causing the animal distress. Olson was initially arrested in November 2011 in connection with the theft of a bulldog from a Coquitlam backyard. She told Black Press the following month that the dog was suffering and that she had the “moral right”

She is scheduled for trial starting Nov. 17, 2014, her lawyer, Craig Sicotte, confirmed last month. Steele said she will talk with her colleagues about changing the wording of the proposal before the UBCM convention in Vancouver this month. Steele said she’ll be at city hall today (Thursday) and will check out the details with staff. Any changes, she said, would have to be endorsed by council as a whole next week.
No fairness says owner
Sandpiper penalized again Tracy Holmes Staff Reporter
For the second time this year, the Sandpiper Pub has been closed by the Liquor Control and Licensing Board as penalty for violations noted last summer. And while pub co-owner Judy Baker said she can’t prove the rules weren’t broken, she is frustrated that the punishment – a six-day suspension of the pub’s liquor licence – was imposed without hard evidence. “I’m not saying we didn’t do it. I wasn’t there on the night in question,” Baker said Wednesday. “All I’m saying is there was no evidence. Without any tests or evidence, you can’t just say somebody’s guilty.” Following an appeal hearing in March, the penalty was pronounced Aug. 1 in connection with two infractions noted on one night in August 2012: one involving a patron drinking from a jug and the other involving not removing an intoxicated person from the premises. Baker – who shares ownership of the pub with White Rock Coun. Bill Lawrence – said she argued that the LCLB failed to prove that the person found drinking from a jug was consuming beer; and, that officials failed to take any steps to determine the alcohol intake of the allegedly intoxicated customer. Baker said affidavits from her staff state the jug contained a mixture of ginger ale and an energy drink; and that the only evidence with regard to the intoxicated customer was that of a liquor inspector who described the woman’s face as “slack” and said she bumped into people. Baker was further frustrated that both the original hearing and the appeal were presided over by the same adjudicator. “There was no fairness to this at all,” she said. Baker described the financial hit from being closed over the long weekend as “staggering.” The pub is to reopen Friday.

Nurses criticize cancellation of evening sessions
Office hours for mental-health clinics Wanda Chow Black Press
The closure of evening mental-health clinics in the Fraser Health Authority has the BC Nurses Union (BCNU) raising the alarm. As of Sept. 1, the evening clinics, some of which were open twice a week until 8 p.m., were phased out in Surrey, White Rock, Langley, New Westminster, the Tri-Cities and Burnaby. The clinics accepted walk-in clients as well as those referred by doctors, and provided counselling, help administering medication and group therapy. Now those and other services will only be available between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. “Night clinics offer invaluable services to people who struggle with mental illness, many of whom can’t get there during the day because of their work, volunteer or school schedules,” said Debra McPherson, president of the BCNU, in a news release last week. “It makes no sense for Fraser Health to be reducing mental-health services, when the need is greater than ever.” The move comes amid calls by Metro Van-

State continues ‘aggressive focus’ i from page 1 However, he pointed to sections of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act that say that individuals may be considered inadmissible not just for being convicted of a crime “involving moral turpitude” but also for admitting voluntarily they have committed such a crime. In the definition of criminal grounds of inadmissibility, crimes can include those that violate regulations and laws of “a foreign country” relating to a controlled substance. Goldstein is upset not only because she is out the $200 she spent on concert tickets and camping – her friends weren’t denied entry, and were able to arrange another ride to the concert – but also because she won’t be allowed back into the U.S. unless she is granted a waiver of inadmissibility. The application fee for that is US$585 – with no guarantee the application will be accepted.
“That sounds like a cash grab to me,” said the full-time university student, noting she owns a vacation cabin in Washington State and crosses the border every week to buy gas and groceries. “I own property down there. I spend thousands of dollars in the U.S. each year. My father was American and never gave up his citizenship. I have family down in California and I was planning to go visit in a few months.” Adding to her frustration, she said, is a sense that the Customs and Border Protection is being inconsistent. “I have been asked the question before, and I’ve always been honest. I’ve been with other people who’ve told the truth, too, and they’ve always let us go. (Officers) have searched the car, haven’t found anything, and it’s been like ‘thank you for being honest’. “I sort of feel like (the officer) wanted to exercise some power
or meet some daily quota.” While Milne would not comment on Goldstein’s allegations, he pointed to a recent statement by Jenny Durkan, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington, that makes it clear the Department of Justice is emphasizing federal marijuana enforcement in the wake of state ballot initiatives in Washington and Colorado that seek to legalize possession of small amounts of pot. In a paragraph highlighted in the CBP statement, Durkan says: “We will continue an aggressive focus on the promotion and sale of drugs to minors, violence and the use of firearms, and the trafficking of marijuana across state or international lines.” Goldstein said she’s unsure what her next step is, other than bringing her case to the media. “I’m considering talking to a lawyer,” she said. “I feel like there should be an appeal process.”

Expedited-removal process criticized on both sides of border
Business groups join fight Jeff Nagel Black Press
A provision that lets American border guards arbitrarily bar Canadians from entering the U.S. for at least five years is under fire from B.C. business leaders who see it as a major threat to crossborder enterprise. The B.C. Chamber of Commerce has joined a U.S. lawsuit that aims to quash the so-called “expedited removal” process. Typically, B.C. residents barred from entry under the provision have been deemed by U.S. border staff to have lied under questioning about the reason for their visit. “It seems like it’s pretty arbitrary in its application,” said Bellingham immigration lawyer Greg Boos, who has filed a submission in a U.S. court on behalf of the B.C. chamber, the Whatcom County chamber and others. Expedited removal consists of an automatic ban on entering the U.S. for either five years or for life, and there’s no avenue for appeal to the courts. Boos said B.C. businesses with key staffers who service equipment they’ve sold to American clients have been barred, causing
chaos for the firms. Oral arguments were “If it was applied to the held last week but a rulCEO of a B.C. company ing isn’t expected for six doing business in the to nine months. T
he Surrey Board of Trade’s position statement released last week opposing the legalization of marijuana begs some serious questions. While the position has been taken by the board’s 19 elected directors – acting in their mandate as advocates on behalf of the organization’s membership and the business community at large – it is curious it was decided almost a year before it was made public. Granted marijuana has acquired hot-button potency in recent days – particularly after Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s headline-provoking admission that he, as an MP, has smoked pot. But the board’s position was endorsed in September 2012, following, we are told, extensive research by its Crime and Justice Advocacy Committee. If the issue is as important to the Surrey business community as the Board of Trade now insists, why didn’t the results of its committee’s hard work deserve public discussion and distribution long before this? Also curious is that – while many conclusions are offered in the position statement – none of the documented evidence presented to board directors by the committee is cited directly. The board alleges the Surrey business community has many things to fear, should marijuana be legalized. Among them are impaired job performance, loss of production, disruption of workplaces due to the risk of impaired machinery operation, problems with interpersonal relations in the workplace and potentially ballooning costs of absenteeism and health programs. If this is, indeed, the case, then it’s in everyone’s interest that the board share the substantiating research with its membership and the general public. Even though marijuana possession has not yet been legalized for other than medical use – as opposed to, say, alcohol or tobacco, which would seem to share some of these more critical impacts – it should be no news to anyone that pot is already readily available to Surrey workers who choose to use it. And if its use “poses serious negative impacts on businesses,” in a future legalization scenario, these effects must be evident already. Having taken this position, the board is obliged to go further. It could start by outlining the scope of the problem in Surrey workplaces that made this an action item at this time.

Financial trust squandered
Assets sold for short-term gain
Editor: Re: Bonuses send ‘wrong message,’ Aug. 29. I was disturbed to read about the extravagant compensation packages for executives at the BC Ferries Corporation – at a time when the corporation mulls over service cuts and fare increases. Earlier in the month we read about pay increases for the executives at TransLink (TransLink salaries on rise, Aug. 20), then were informed of a plan to increase the provincial sales tax to resolve TransLink’s well publicized financial woes (Transit advocates call for 0.5% sales tax, Aug. 29), and for the past year have been treated to numerous revelations about the bloated expenditures of our governmentappointed senators. While the initial cost of these rags-to-riches stories is borne by individual taxpayers, it is our democratic system that will ultimately suffer for such misguided spending by our political leaders. While no one likes to pay taxes, we will support governments that levy them, as long as we see the money being used for the common good. When we lose faith in our politicians’ ability or willingness to ensure that our taxes are spent for the benefit of all, and not the profit of an elite few, people become cynical and apathetic, and withdraw from the political process, not even bothering to vote. We need our elected representatives at every level of government to work harder to identify and eliminate the legal loopholes that allow the abuse of our financial trust to continue. Donald Fleming, White Rock
Editor: Re: Pressure is on for skills training, Aug. 20 column. Columnist Tom Fletcher has complained about the shortage of skills training in Canada, and he is right. But he is wrong when he derides the teaching of the arts. Ray Bradbury, Aldous Huxley, and George Orwell have written about fictional societies where people were given the required training to accomplish tasks, but were denied all other education. The elite were then more able to control society for their own benefit. That is happening now in Canada. In Alberta, budgets for “nonessential” education are being cut. Fletcher talks about the “gap between what skills our education system produces and what the economy needs.” By “the economy,” he means the tearing out and shipping away of our assets – nonrenewable resources. For whose benefit? We are giving them away for the sake of the wages we are paid for digging them up. In fact, much of those wages are going to foreign workers, foreign engineering firms and foreign prefab shops. What long-term benefits do we have to show for the resources being gone, and the
associated environmental damage to our country? The fact that Alberta needs to borrow about $5.5 billion this year – estimated before the flooding – is a sure sign that something is wrong. We need to evaluate the real costs and benefits of what we are doing. In an affluent democracy, whatever harm we do as a society is our own fault. A well-educated population would direct governments to higher goals than simple short-term economics. And a well-educated population would not be so easily manipulated to serve the interests of global corporations. Bill McConnell, Surrey
Flag-waving media derided Editor: Here we go again. The Masters of Deception are setting up the next excuse for another war. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is warning the Syrian government that these alleged chemical weapons are “unacceptable”. This was not a problem 25 years ago, when the U.S. was encouraging Saddam Hussein to use these types of abominations against Iran. U.S. Gen. Wesley Clark alerted us 10 years ago that the Pentagon had seven Middle-East countries lined up for future invasions, including
Iraq, Libya and Syria as well as Iran. Iraq wasn’t enough, neither was Libya. The bankers need higher profits from their ownership of the armaments industries. The DoD needs a bigger budget. Who can resist this avalanche of money power? Bogus provocations, known as ‘False Flag’ operations, have been a proven technique since Hitler invaded Poland in 1939. We need more independence from our media, not flag waving, that may lead to nuclear war. Herb Spencer, Surrey
Off-duty but on their game Editor: I would like to thank two off-duty RCMP officers for their help. Last week, my wife and I had just finished dinner at a White Rock restaurant and were leaving the front door, when my wife fainted and fell heavily to the floor, badly injuring her head and shoulder. The two officers, in civilian clothing, were dining in the restaurant and rushed to my wife and assisted her and made her more comfortable. They called an ambulance and tended to her until she was taken to hospital. Many thanks. Ed Neale, White Rock

Editor: Saturday evening, I watched a car drive through the pedestrian walk on 128 Street at 17 Avenue. Two elementary-school-aged boys were waiting for the cars to stop, at about 6:30 p.m. Then the second and third car zoomed by, taking no notice of the young lads. A fourth car came past the other way. The older boy lifted his arms in disbelief. I was livid. I felt that the boys had witnessed a terrible example of adult behaviour. On my way home , I thought that perhaps my car, waiting to turn left towards the library, blocked the view for the three drivers passing from behind me. Kids are short when they are eight or nine. The answer is a pedestrian-cross light similar to the one by Crescent Park Elementary. The answer is for drivers to drive with care. I hope those boys are OK. I’ll feel better if this letter unnerves others as well. Please take care, adults. Sally Stewart, Surrey

Getting high – not civil rights – is really the concern of marijuana-referendum advocates, writes Colin Fletcher.
Pot debate must focus on children Editor: I have some deep-rooted concerns regarding the manner in which demands for a referendum on the complicated issue of the legalization of marijuana are being pursued by Sensible BC. I do not like the way Sensible BC is pushing and bullying for legalization and yet doesn’t even seem to consider the enormous negative implications, especially in regards to our youth. What about driving while under the influence of marijuana? Or the negative effects marijuana has on addicts who become chronic users? There are a multitude of other issues regarding legalization being conveniently ignored. If we are going to have a referendum, let’s figure out how to protect the children as part of its mandate. Adults are going to smoke marijuana, and I respect that choice. They are going to smoke it, whether it is legal or illegal. Should it be legal for five- or sixyear-olds to smoke marijuana? Would even the most extreme pot advocates agree that this is the way we want our society to protect our children? The demands to legalize marijuana without any form of guidelines or consequence of the grow-ops, distribution
and possession is frightening. The longer marijuanaadvocacy groups ignore the potential negative sides of legalization, the more they will hurt their cause. Personally, I don’t smoke marijuana, and this is my choice. I agree the current system of policing marijuana is not working. I also agree that marijuana is about as harmful as alcohol, but two wrongs don’t make a right. The BC Compassion Club is a step in the right direction, and I am glad this organization exists. Before there is discussion of further legalization, make sure that part of the mandate of the referendum is how to protect society from the potential negative consequences. Legalization is not a black-or-white issue. Let’s make sure a referendum, if there is one, is specific to protecting society and not just making it more convenient for marijuana consumers to get high – because getting high is what marijuana is really about, it is not about civil rights. Getting tax dollars off the misery of people addicted to cannabis is not the right solution, either. Find some other way to gain blood money, please! Addicts need our help and protection, not our condemnation. Colin Fletcher, White Rock

Guns seized from American travellers
Guilty pleas in South Surrey border firearms cases A trio of U.S. residents were hit with fines in Surrey Provincial Court last month, after pleading guilty to firearms-related charges in connection with three separate incidents at the two South Surrey borders crossing. Canada Border Services Agency announced the pleas last week. The first of the cases began on May 21, when a Pennsylvania resident arrived at the Pacific Highway commercial port. Officials say the traveller did not declare any weapons or firearms, however, during a search of his vehicle, border officers located a loaded .38-calibre handgun in a cabinet behind the driver’s seat. Robert Scott Keller pleaded guilty on Aug. 13 to making false statements, and was fined $2,500. That same day, an Alabama man was fined
a total of $5,000, after pleading guilty to making false statements and unauthorized possession of a firearm in connection with an Aug. 12 incident at the Douglas border. CBSA officials say Edward Laverne Blair told border officers that he also had no firearms to declare. During a secondary examination, a loaded .40-calibre pistol was located in a duffle bag on Blair’s motorcycle. Blair was fined $2,500 for each offence. In a separate case at the Douglas port on Aug. 12, border services officers arrested a Texas resident for smuggling firearms into Canada. The man was en route to Alaska and also told officers he did not have
any firearms. During a search of his travel trailer, however, officers found a plastic rifle case containing an undeclared AR15 assault rifle, two empty over-capacity magazines for the rifle, and 40 rounds of ammunition. Further searches of the vehicle uncovered a .45-calibre
firearm, a duty belt with an empty holster, handcuffs and two over-capacity magazines containing .45 ammunition. Aug. 14, Vaughn Michael Wells pleaded guilty to making false statements and unauthorized possession of firearms. He was fined $4,000 on each
count for a total of $8,000. A fourth U.S. resident, Ronald Dean Watkins of California, was sentenced to three days in jail for failing to declare an unloaded .22-calibre pistol and a magazine containing eight rounds on arrival in Victoria on Aug. 13. – Tracy Holmes

line – growing even longer when she moved to White Rock 15 years ago, where she began working with the White Rock/South Surrey Stroke Recovery Club. “She suffered two small strokes and one day, she was on the HandyDart bus with some members of the club and thought it would be a good place to volunteer,” Gillespie recalled. She continued to work with the club for 12 years, right up to her final days, Gillespie noted. “She was still working there and the (Peace Arch Hospital) right up until she went to the hospital,” Gillespie said. “Even when she was at the hospital, and I would take her out to see outside, I remember her saying, ‘Carol Anne, go ask the head of the hospital if I can lie here and collect money for the hospital.’
“That’s the kind of person she was.” Over her years working with the stroke recovery club, Dove raised thousands for the annual Run for Recovery, Gillespie said, noting her mother often placed collection jars with HandyDart drivers in order to collect pennies. “She worked for years. It was a very important cause to her.” Amongst Dove’s most memorable experiences was receiving the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal last year. “She was on top of the moon. Even two days before she passed away, she was still talking about it,” Gillespie said. “Her motto came from my grandpa, who always said, ‘if you think of others you won’t think of your own problems.’ “So, that’s what she did.”

Sources Food Bank’s move into a new, larger facility received a big boost last month in the form of an $8,000 donation from Vancity. The donation is the latest in Sources’ Build our Bank campaign, which is raising money to help outfit the organization’s new home, 2343 156 St. in South Surrey.
The Vancity donation will be put towards shelving in the new facility. “With community need growing for the services offered by the Sources Food Bank, this donation is a welcome contribution to the brand-new space,” a press release states. Day has ‘taken on life of its own’ i from page 29 These artists are very approachable and love to talk to the public, and each will also give a 20-minute talk about themselves as artists over the weekend.” MacClure said the IAD concept began in a very small way some nine years ago, when he and his wife, Marilyn, owned and operated a gallery in Los Cabos, Mexico. He found to his surprise that no one had thought of – or at least followed through on – a celebration honouring artists and the role they play in society, so he declared one himself with a press release, choosing Oct. 25, the date of Pablo Picasso’s birthday. “Pablo was as iconic an artists as any in living history,” he said. To MacClure’s greater surprise, the idea, from modest beginnings, has gone on to catch the imagination of artists, art collectors, gallery owners, educators and civic governments around the world. “It’s taken on a life of its own,” MacClure said, noting the momentum has grown to the point that he no longer considers himself an authority on IAD events. “It’s being done in a thousand places – some of the smaller events I don’t even hear about,” he said. Events closer to home area easier to track, and MacClure was pleased noting the City of Calgary this year put out a call for artists for a project celebrating IAD. But he’s content with an arm’s-legth role as founder, he said. “All I wanted to do was encourage it – I didn’t want to dictate it,” he said. In his home community, of course, MacClure has taken a far more active role in spearheading the White Rock festival. And he’s pleased the city, “after challenging its Arts and Economic Task Force to find ways to marry the business and arts community,” took the initiative to host a full festival this year. Another feature of the event is that artists locally and from across the province have also been invited to submit 12x12-inch paintings and other art works which will be on display and available for purchase at both
the gala opening and throughout the weekend portion of the festival. Tickets for the
opening gala can be purchased online through White Rock Leisure Services (www.
whiterockcity.ca), by calling 604-541-2199, or in person at White Rock Community Centre.

Return of the King The enduring appeal of pop idol Elvis Presley returns to Coast Capital Playhouse (1532 Johnston Rd.) tonight (Thursday), courtesy of Darren Lee and the Memphis Flash. Building on an uncanny resemblance, and a carefully honed act featuring spot-on vocals and all the moves familiar to generations of fans, Lee has earned a billing as “the world’s number one Elvis tribute,” after appearing for 11 years in the American Superstars show at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas strip. Lee, who jump-started his career by winning the World Elvis Contest in Memphis, Tenn. in 1997 – on the 20th anniversary of Presley’s passing – is returning to his Canadian roots for his current series of shows. The first Elvis tribute act to recreate the 1968 Comeback special in its entirety (a show he presented at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and the Michael J. Fox Theatre) Lee will revisit all the perennial songs, including everything from Heartbreak Hotel, Don’t Be Cruel, Hound Dog and Love Me Tender to Burnin’ Love, All Shook Up and more. Presented by Rock.It Boy Entertainment, the show will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.). Tickets ($45, plus facility fees and service charges) are available at the Coast Capital Playhouse box office, 604-536-7535, or online at www. whiterockplayers.ca

Bayside opens season
Bayside Sharks and Canada Wolverine star Adam “Tornado” Timler will be on hand for the BC Bulldogs first rep game of the 2013 season this Saturday at the South Surrey Athletic Park. The Peninsula rugby player, who burst onto the international stage this season, facing off against the USA Tomahawks, will be playing and signing autographs. The Bulldogs will be playing against the Western USA, with the game kicking off at 5 p.m. at the South Surrey park, 14600 20 Ave. There will be rugby throughout the day, as well as refreshments and a chance to win a signed Canada Wolverines jersey. More local Bayside rugby players will be spotted as part of the BC Junior Rugby League game, which will begin prior to the main event.
White Rock and South Surrey were well represented at the BC Seniors Game held Aug. 20-24 in Kamloops. South Surrey’s Joseph Incantalupo brought home the gold for men’s doubles age group 74-79 and Kerbey Young, who won big in table tennis with a bronze in mixed age group 60-64, gold in men’s doubles age group 60-64 and a silver in men’s single age group 60-64. White Rock tennis buffs LaVerne Browne and Floyd Stanley won gold for mixed doubles in the 70-74 age category with Stanley adding to that with a gold in the men’s single age 70-74 category.

Live, work and play at MOSAIC’s Fremont Blue By Kerry Vital
MOSAIC Homes is bringing a touch of colour to Port Coquitlam with Fremont Blue, their new townhome development that’s a paradise for outdoor lovers. The second phase starts sales this month. “This is the most exciting property today,” says MOSAIC’s Geoff Duyker. “It’s just a beautiful place to live.” Fremont Blue is bordered by the Pitt River, the 25-kilometre
Traboulay Trail and park land. “We’ve had people stop by the Home Store on their bikes after getting off the trail,” Duyker says. “It’s really rare to be able to live in this kind of setting.” The homes themselves include open-plan layouts with plenty of space to relax or entertain, oversized windows and nine-foot ceilings throughout the main living areas to maximize your sense of space. “We are doing what we do well in terms of creating beautiful
NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT
housing,” Duyker says. “MOSAIC has a long track record of building sought-after homes.” Fremont Blue will be part of the master-planned Fremont community, which will include shopping and restaurants. You’ll also be close by schools, leisure and recreation opportunities, as well as the convenience of the Port Mann Bridge, or commuting to Burnaby or Vancouver without having to cross the river. “The whole neighbourhood is going to look a lot different in a few years,” says Duyker. “You could literally live, work and play here. This is the most significant master-planned development in the region.” Buyers will also have access to the Fremont Riverclub, which will include 12,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenities, including a lap pool, outdoor cooking area, gym, fitness studio and a great room with a big-screen TV, lounge, pool table, card tables and entertainment kitchen and bar, among many other things. Homes start in the mid-$300,000s. For more information, visit mosaichomes.com, call 604-552-0319 or visit the Home Store at 2332 Ranger Lane, open between noon and 6 p.m.
Kits Pool and the boardwalk trail. The homes are completed and move-in ready now, which Greenfield says is one of the big draws for buyers. “There’s been a lot of excitement around completion,” she says. “Many happy homeowners have already moved in, and there’s already a great energy within the building.” The final release of inventory at Kits360 features just 15 two-bedroom suites and penthouse homes, ranging from 776 to about 978 square feet. Many homes feature fantastic ocean, mountains or city views and space for outdoor entertaining. “They’re really the cream of the crop. The floorplans available give you lots of flexibility depending on how you live your life,” Greenfield says. The final release of two-bedroom homes at Kits360 start at $599,900. For more information, visit www.kits360. com, call 604-737-0360 or visit the sales office at 1777 West 7th Avenue, open starting Sept. 7 from 12 to 5 p.m. daily except Friday, or by appointment.
A well-rounded life at Kits360 By Kerry Vital

Kits360 is located right in the heart of Kitsilano and allows residents to take advantage of everything the neighbourhood has to offer.
DON’T MISS OUT!
Kitsilano is one of Vancouver’s most desirable areas, with its array of amenities and outdoor activities all in one place. Intergulf Development Group is now bringing an equally enticing offer to the neighbourhood with Kits360. “Kits is one of the best neighbourhoods in Vancouver,” says project manager Macartney Greenfield. “We named the project Kits360 because there are amenities in literally every direction.” That’s no exaggeration. Kits360 is just steps from the 5th Avenue Cinemas, shopping on West 4th Avenue and recreation on the seawall. You’re also minutes from South Granville, Yaletown, Granville Island and downtown Vancouver, as well as Kits Beach,

animated by people rather than things
HOWEVER YOU DEFINE COMMUNITY, WE CALL IT AN EASY WAY TO MEET AND CONNECT WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS. It’s just one of the many reasons residents love calling Morgan Crossing home. It could be at the chalk art festival on Main Street (see below!), or one of the many other events, like movie nights in the summer or resident parties. How about chatting with fellow dog owners at the Morgan Crossing Dog Park, or meeting during a class or workout at Steve Nash Sports Club. Or just hanging out at the coffee shops and restaurants, at a wine tasting at Everything Wine, or on a bench on Main Street. You’ll see and meet lots of the people who live and work at Morgan Crossing… and maybe even ask out your cute neighbour, Amy. Because loving where you live should be about more than just loving your stunning condo (though we have lots of those too!).
