Fierce family fun at mud races Mud drags ‘best races’ 100 Mile House has seen
Gaven Crites Free Press
The engines roared, the tires spun, and the mud and dirt flew for the hundreds of spectators at Scotty’s Mud Drags at 105 Mile on Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Now in its 10th year at the site, the annual event is part of the North West Mud Racing Association (NWMRA) circuit and drew 45 drivers from around the province to the racing grounds located off Lilypad Lake Road about 10 kilometres north of 100 Mile House. Kamloops resident Dave Biddlecombe, a racer and past president of the NWMRA, has
been with the association for more than a decade. He applauds the work done by the promoters – Scotty and Liesbeth Lang – and the volunteers. Biddlecombe says the condition of the track, the preparation and the mud made last weekend’s races, in his opinion, the “best races 100 Mile House has ever seen.” “There were no surprises. Everything looked like it was suppose to. We weren’t chasing our tail trying to get anything [ready].” The results first through third were as follows: Street Class Son Of A Redneck, Lee Briand, Bridge Lake; Bumpy, Gerald Sterne, Langley; and Double OT,

Wranglers on the road
Ken Alexander Free Press
With 28 players still in camp, the 100 Mile House Wranglers hit the road for a couple of pre-season games that started with a visit to Kamloops to take on the Kamloops Storm on Sept. 4. It’s anticipated the Storm will become natural rivals for the Wranglers because of their close proximity and easy travelling distance for the fans to follow their teams on the road trips. Next up is a visit to Princeton on Sept. 7 to take on the Posse. Details of these games will appear in the Sept. 11 edition of the 100 Mile House Free Press. The Wranglers are in the Doug Birks Division (Okanagan/ Shuswap Conference) along with the Chase Heat, Kamloops Storm, Sicamous Eagles and Revelstoke Grizzlies. So, once the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) regular season gets underway, games against divisional opponents will be meaningful in the run to the playoffs. The next big game for the Wranglers is on Sept. 11, the Storm comes in to 100 Mile House for the local squad’s lone pre-season tilt on home ice. This will the local fans first look at the Wranglers in a game situation and it will be exciting for the team
and management to put on a good show for the hometown crowd. The club is doing something special to commemorate the evening, as admission to the Sept. 11 contest is by wearing a $20 a souvenir T-shirt. The commemorative T-shirt will not only serve as a keepsake of the Wranglers first home game in the KIJHL, but it will also serve as the ticket into
the game. Club president Tom Bachynski said he hopes businesses will get involved, as the Wranglers will be going into businesses to sell the T-shirts. “We hope to sell them to all of the staff and the staff will wear the T-shirt to let everyone know the big game is on Sept. 11.” The souvenir T-shirts are also available at
the reception desk at Central GM in 100 Mile, at the Wranglers office (Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) in the South Cariboo Rec. Centre, and will be on sale before the Sept. 11 game. Editor’s Note: 100 Mile House Wranglers fans will be able to see all of the 100 Mile House Free Press Wranglers’ coverage on the home page of our website at

VOTE YES TO THE RESIDENTS OF THE SOUTH CARIBOO:
The board of the 100 Mile House & District Soccer Association asks that you consider voting in favour of the upcoming recreation bylaw change on Saturday, September 7th. The current bylaw is only able to fund the arena, curling rink and ball fields, facilities which are used by people from all over the South Cariboo. By broadening the definition of the recreation bylaw, the CRD will be able to help fund more facilities and programs beyond these three, a move we see as very positive for the community as a whole. There has been some misinformation given out around town. We would like to make sure people know their facts before voting: 1. The District cannot sub contract the soccer field maintenance unless they have no staff to do the work, even if an independent contractor may cost less. This is built into the collective bargaining agreement for District employees. 2. The bylaw could raise up to another $300k annually. The immediate priorities with the additional funding are to help with the $61k in annual costs for the soccer fields, and to pay for much-needed capital upgrades at Martin Exeter Hall. Once the capital upgrades are done, the Hall will only require about $40k/yr to operate. The entire amount raised with this bylaw change is NOT only for these two facilities. It’s not just about the soccer fields and Martin Exeter Hall. 3. The change to the bylaw will mean that ALL types of recreation and arts/culture facilities & activities could potentially receive funding. It’s not about just the soccer fields and the Hall. The cost for this change is about $20 per $100,000 of assessed property value. For a house valued at $300k, this would equate to $60 per year, or $5 per month. 4. People in the South Cariboo do vote for their CRD directors, and both the District & CRD representatives sit on a Joint Committee to address issues that affect the entire South Cariboo. This is not a plan thought up by the District of 100 Mile House - it is the result of 3 years of meetings and discussions between the CRD and the District on how best to fund facilities and programs throughout the area. We believe this change is vitally important to the entire South Cariboo. Without recreational and arts/culture facilities, there are fewer enticements for new families and professionals such as doctors to move into the area. Growing our population should be a priority, and these types of facilities will help convince people to choose the South Cariboo. Approximately 85% of local soccer players and 65% of attendees at Martin Exeter Hall events live outside the District of 100 Mile House. These are but two venues used by people from all over the South Cariboo. It makes no sense that the District should pay 100% of the costs for these facilities just because they happen to fall within town boundaries. We believe that all residents of the South Cariboo should share the costs more fairly, as is already done for the arena, curling rink and ball fields. 100 Mile Soccer provides a sport program for over 400 children each year, and we have a thriving youth referee program. Our volunteers are wonderful, and put in many hours coaching and mentoring young players. We have an amazing soccer facility, and we have already hosted a Provincial Championship. In 2011, this event brought many out of town teams to our area, and introduced more people to the South Cariboo. Future events will do the same, but only if we keep and maintain the facilities and venues already in place, and if we look to fund other recreation and arts activities. Please vote YES to the Recreation Bylaw change. Sincerely, For anniversary events visit village.clinton.bc.ca The Board of the 100 Mile House & District Soccer Association

Seventh 7 Summits set for Cariboo Mountains awareness about the fragile alpine environment and raise money to support the Friends of Barkerville, who have been instrumental in preserving and protecting many of the trails we use. Due to its design, goals, and ethics, this unique showcase event is also endorsed by the Cariboo Mountain Bike Consortium. The 7 Summits Challenge is meant to be completed, not necessarily won. The poker run and awards for “seventh place” and “Most Average Time” are meant to acknowledge enjoyment, not just competition, for this event. Most of the 75 to 100 participants end up travelling in social groups of equal paced individuals, who love travelling in the moun-

From the earliest 19th-century goldfield cattle-drives to the square dance fervour of the 1940s and ’50s, Barkerville has been proud to play venue to more than 100 years of cowboy culture. The weekend-spanning Jubilee starts Sept. 6 with registration for the Third Annual “Northern Star” amateur singing competition from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Barkerville’s Visitors’ Reception Centre (VRC). Google photo tours offered for local business boost
Carole Rooney Free Press
Anyone planning a vacation from anywhere in the world can have an online 360-degree look on Google Maps at the Highway 97 corridor through 100 Mile House. Now, they can look inside the South Cariboo Visitor Centre (SCVC). Visitor services coordinator Julie Gilmore says SCVC got on board with a Google Business Photos Project offering Google street views for the inside of businesses, allowing customers or clients who find businesses on the Internet to “walk through” and explore the establishment in an online tour. “It is a valuable tool. We all know how social media and the Internet is taking over.” SCVC was the first business in 100 Mile House to participate in the project, when InsideView4Business
“Google Trusted” photographer Jody Wall travelled to 100 Mile House last spring seeking businesses looking to expand the Internet visibility. Now, Gilmore notes people can actually view what it it looks like inside the tourism centre, moving their viewpoint right through the building and out the rear door to the backdrop of the 100 Mile Marsh. “I think it can only help boost bringing tourism into our area ... I think it engages people.” The SCVC tour can be viewed live at www. goo.gl/Z0tmmq (or at www.maps.google. ca, by mouse-clicking-and-dragging the man-shaped symbol to its business location). Wall says he informs local businesses about building their online presence and takes multiple point-of-interest photographs, customized to the business and budget, that also capture

Despite the rainy conditions, the 108 Golf Resort Men’s Club saw 64 golfers out Aug. 28 for a ninehole round ahead of the Club Championships, which take place on Sept. 4 and 8. Golfers were split into three flights for last Wednesday’s round. Chris Seeley fired a 35 for low-gross score in the first flight, just beating out Bill Harris, who shot a 36 and Richard Smith with a 37. Low-net score in the first flight went to John Kuharski (34) and Eric Friesen (34), followed by Tony Morete (35). The deuce pot was split by Brian Coldwell, Kuharski, Jamie Crellin and Jim Laird. Second flight low gross was carded by Len Van Drimmelen (38), followed by Lee Hansen (39) and Jack Rausch (41). Low-net winner was Shawn Reid (31), followed by Merle Ross (33) and Ron Vandermay (34). The deuce pot went to Miles Bucknell. Ed Cassie shot the low-gross score in the third flight with 43, with Brent Chysyk and Ron Tonts each shooting 47. Top low-net scores belonged to Carson Walker (35), Ken Waite (36) and Doug Johnston (37). Longest drives went to Seeley (first flight), Marvin Declare (second flight) and Chysyk (third flight). Closes-to-the-pin honours went to Richard Smith (first flight), Rick Lundsted (second flight) and Gord Spare (third flight). The long-putt winner was Jay Scott.
street view imagery. He adds this is easily embedded on websites, social media pages and other digital media, noting people who invest time online are more inclined to make online or on site purchases or bookings. Gilmore says she encourages local businesses to consider
joining up to get the “visual of our town out” to the global masses. Canim Lake’s KAYANARA Guest Ranch & Resort joined in late August, which he notes will be online shortly. More information is available at www. insideview4business. com.

10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items‌ products will sell better when they look “taken care of.â€? 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this! Cadet Russell Allison of 100 Mile House topped 170 other cadets to earn the award as the best cadet in the third intake of General Military Training at Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre (VACSTC). Allison is a member of 12887 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in 100 Mile House. He and 170 other army cadets attended the Army Cadet General Military Training Course, which sees the cadets introduced to communal living, participate in an overnight Basic Trades Field Exercise, challenge the mini confidence course, improve their accuracy with the air rifle, take part in a summer biathlon, learn orienteering and receive information on more senior courses that will be available to them in the coming years. more than 1,200 Army Cadets from western Canada will have spent up to six weeks in the Okanagan Valley training centre, expanding the training they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming friendships. The Cadet Program is
a national program for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the sea, army and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Cadets make valuable contributions to Canadian society on a daily basis in terms of environmental, citizenship and community activities. Cadets also learn valuable life and work skills, such as teamwork, leadership and citizenship.

Donna Barnett Last week was the final week of hearings for Taseko’s proposed New Prosperity Mine, which I know many of you have been following closely. I have followed this project since its inception almost two decades ago, when I was Mayor of 100 Mile House. I’ve supported the project from the beginning, both as mayor and as an MLA, as did the city council and the community. I’d like to tell you why I am convinced that this project should go ahead. Forestry has always been an important part of our regional
economy, yet this industry has suffered as a result of the pine beetle epidemic, which has affected our region, causing economic hardships and affecting many families. The New Prosperity Mine gives us a new opportunity – a chance to create jobs, reduce poverty, and boost our local economy. The economic impact the mine would have for our region is hard to exaggerate. There have been some concerns about how this project will impact First Nations communities, and I believe that through the consultation process and through revenue sharing, we can address these concerns. This project will create many job opportunities for young First Nations people, bringing many benefits to their communities. Taseko has been a great corporate citizen,
working with communities to ensure they benefit from projects. At the Gibraltar Mine, Taseko signed an agreement with the Williams Lake Indian Band and has a great relationship with them, and the upgrades Taseko made to this mine left billions of dollars in the region and created 200 more per-
manent jobs. The New Prosperity Mine would bring these types of benefits as well. The New Prosperity Mine is truly a project that has the potential to live up to its name. That’s why it has my full support, and why I hope to see this project move forward soon.

Lightningcaused fires flared up during long weekend
Five new lightningcaused wildfires started during the Labour Day long weekend, but all were small spot-sized fires at 0.009 hectares in size. There was one in the Quesnel Z o n e on Sept. 1, three (two 100 Mile House Zone; one Horsefly-Likely Zone) on Sept. 2 and one in the Quesnel Zone on Sept. 3 from the overnight storm. Fortunately, the weekend storms were accompanied by precipitation. The Cariboo Fire Centre (CFC) will be monitoring the region for possible holdover/ sleeper fires that could pop up this week if the weather gets warmer, drier and windier. The current fire danger rating is a mix of moderate-to-low throughout much of the CFC, with areas of high in the Chilcotin and Churn Creek areas, and pockets of extreme near Middle Lake, Tatla Lake and Puntzi Mountain. There has been a total of 307 wildfires (239 lightning-caused; 68 person-caused) burning 2,500 hectares in the CFC this season.

Canning workshop looks to attract and connect immigrants, newcomers Gaven Crites Free Press
“Growing local food and food sustainability is something of interest in the South Cariboo.” With that in mind, Kimberly VanceLundsbye, Welcoming Communities coordinator of the Cariboo-Chilcotin Partners for Literacy Society, is inviting area residents to join two community canning workshops on Sept. 14 and 21 at the 100 Mile House Community Kitchen.
There’s an emphasis on attracting newer residents and immigrants, Vance-Lundsbye adds. “That activity is something a lot of local people would be involved in, but people who moved here from urban centres or maybe from other countries might not have that skill. This is an opportunity for them to do it and meet new friends hopefully.” A number of people have already registered, but there is room for more at the workshop, which goes 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and costs $25. The
fee is to cover material costs (jars and produce). There is no charge for participants who have lived in Canada less than five years. Rod Hennecker and Karen Greenwood of the Community Enhancement and Economic Development Society (CEEDS) will be instructing. The South Cariboo is an agricultural community, Vance-Lundsbye says, and canning is part of the local culture. “Farming, local growing, food sustainability and our farmer’s mar-
Literacy is important to everyone, all generations By Lory Rochon Sept. 8 is International Literacy Day, so you ask why should literacy be important in our community? It’s because literacy skills are used everywhere – at work, home, and for entertainment. Literacy can be as simple as being able to read a menu, or as serious as being able to understand safety procedures. Imagine if you weren’t able to read a sign that told you there was a road hazard ahead. Are you able to estimate the costs of your groceries while shopping? What about being able to apply for government benefits or to clearly explain your symptoms to your doctor? Poor literacy skills could seriously affect the quality of your life. Conversely, strong literacy skills allow people to successfully function in their day-to-day lives. With strong literacy skills, people can be successfully employed, can maintain strong relationships, and can more easily adapt to change. Today’s world is changing faster than ever. In order to keep up with the changes, everyone needs to practise their literacy skills, so read a book, do some
crosswords, or play card games. Any activity that you do will help to practise your skills. And what about the next generation? One way you can help is to support your local school and literacy programs to ensure the next generation will be
ready for what the world brings. This way, your children and grandchildren will have the best chance of adapting to changes, maintain employment, and successfully function in their new world. Lory Rochon is a literacy outreach volunteer.
ket. I think these are assets we have in the South Cariboo. It’s good to get people who are
new in town involved in that movement.” To register, call 778482-0090.
