Columbia Basin groups wishing to help maintain or enhance environmental conditions in and around their communities are invited to submit project ideas to the Environmental Initiatives Program (EIP) of Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). The application deadline for large grants (projects up to $30,000) is October 15, 2013. The Johnsons Landing Community Association is one of the organizations that has benefited from EIP support. This past spring, it was able to initiate a project to rehabilitate the site of the 2012 landslide. Several sections of the slide were planted with live deciduous tree stakes, and the site was fenced to protect new vegetation from ungulates in the area. The group plans to stabilize more areas of the slide using natural methods in the fall.

Hospital foundation’s Starlite Campaign purchases overbed tables Submitted

This week East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s mission to provide funding for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital and other facilities in complementing the health care needs of the region celebrated the arrival of 44 overbed tables at the regional hospital. “This is a fantastic example of what unrestricted funds given during last year’s Starlite Campaign can do to enhance patient care.

PANDA KUNG FU For Pre-Schoolers

EKFH was thrilled to designate $9,500 of those unrestricted funds to purchase new overbed tables for the Food Services Department in Cranbrook,” shares EKFH’s Donna Grainger. The second and third floors will each receive 22 tables for patient use. The new tables are easily wipe able and offer a larger space for food trays and patient items. Public support of the annual Starlite Campaign can and does

make a difference for many departments whose needs may be different than large medical equipment. The 2013 Starlite Campaign will launch again this November. An unrestricted gift allows the EKFH Board of Directors to determine the funding allocation of the gift. If you want to get a head start with the holiday spirit, EKFH is gladly accepting Starlite donations through its on-line secured website wwww.ekfh.ca.

An alternate theory on car thefts by Brian Coombs

The Cranbrook and Kimberley RCMP recently informed the public that vehicle thefts seem to be on the rise in both communities. This troubling trend seems out of place in this part of the country. After all, people tend to come out here, especially in the summer, to enjoy the great outdoors away from the hustle and bustle—and crime of the big city. Now not all of the thefts involve the actual stealing of a vehicle. Many of the reported crimes are of people finding that their car had been broken into, with change, small items or in some cases, nothing being taken. So the question arises as to why the increase in vehicle thefts. Is it only a couple of thieves going on a spree? Is it some kind of fad that everyone thinks they have to be a part of like

twerking, but somewhat worse depending on who you talk to? Could it be a poor economy? It would be hard to put it on that without looking to a whole subset of the population. Youth unemployment is sitting at around 12 per cent at the moment and according to Statistics Canada, the largest proportion of vehicle thieves are those between 15 and 18. Still, unemployment amongst the youth in BC is not a new phenomenon. So barring new evidence from the RCMP, there is another possible reason behind the vehicle thefts and it was laid out graphically on the front page of the September 4 Cranbrook Daily Townsman for those with eyes to see it. At the bottom of the page appeared two stories, side by each. The first was about an increase in vehicle thefts and next to it was a story about—prepare to be as-

tounded—an increase in bears. Is it coincidence that there seems to be more ursine activity in the area at exactly the same time vehicle thefts are on the rise? Some people think not and their reasoning is sound. Let’s look at the facts: • Bears are notorious for their stealing. One only has to look at an excellent televised documentary series that ran many years ago that documented a particular bear and his “pic-i-nic basket” stealing ways. • Bears break into cars all the time. (see above photo) • There hasn’t been an arrest in the vehicle thefts as of yet and bears have been seen near cars in the area. • A bear will not look you in the eyes if you accuse him of vehicle theft. They will look right away from you. Would they do this if they were innocent? • Looked at in eco-

nomic terms, the unemployment rate for bears is sitting at nearly 100 per cent, yet most bears seem to be well-fed and content. Suspicious? You bet. While this is just a theory at the moment, this is something that the RCMP should look into very seriously. If it is not the bears that are behind the increase in vehicle thefts it would have to be that there are people in these two communities that have no respect for other people’s property and have no concept of the work that went into buying those vehicles. In the beautiful and idyllic land that is the East Kootenay in the summer, it is hard to believe that those kind of people live here. Of course, it could also be the squirrels. Editors note: The above article should not be taken seriously.

A special thanks To all the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank Directors, Volunteers and Supporters of the Annual Garage Sale The garage sale is now in the over and done for this year. It was an overwhelming success with record setting sales. Huge crowds of customers were waiting for the doors to open on Saturday morning, larger than any other year. The Curling Rink was full of high quality, good quality and some not so good merchandise for the customers to purchase, it appeared as though there was record setting amounts of donated goods this year for the sale. The staff , setting the sale up beginning on Tues, did a superb job of organizing the tables and floor displays. By Friday evening the sale was ready to go. To all the set up crew you deserve a huge thanks for your dedication and service, a job well done, thank you. Saturdays staff did an excellent job in “getting the money”. Serving customers, helping out on the sales floor and keeping things going smoothly all day long. You all deserve a big thank you. Many were also part of the setup crew. Thank you to all who helped out at the Curling Rink during the month of August, receiving donated good at the the door which were delivered by the donors [about 80% was delivered to us] Thanks to the all that were involved with pick of goods, mostly furniture, your contribution of truck and labour is much appreciated. The tear down, take down and dispersal of unsold goods as well as the clean up of the rink after the sale was

over is always a huge undertaking. This year large quantities of unsold items were donated to the Salvation Army, who picked up the goods at our back door, this saved us a large amount of time. A very big thank you to all who cleaned up the Rink in record time, by 4;30pm the building was back to normal without a trace of evidence that a huge garage sale just took place. The food booth outside the Rink, operated by Al, Louise and Evan had record amounts of customers and sales. Thank you for a superb job. Again this year we had Fall Raffle tickets for sale at the garage sale as well as at the pucksters golf tournament on Saturday, both venues had large amounts of sales. Thanks to Tim and Debra who were at the Pucksters Golf and Cath at the garage sale. Job well done. Thanks to all the generous donors, both individuals and businesses, a sale like this would not have with out you great support. A great big thank you is in order to all the hundreds of customers who began streaming in at the opening and continued until closing, your support is very much appreciated. This years Garage Sale, Food Booth, and Raffle ticket Sales produced record sales never experienced before. 2013 Garage Sale $10,752.00 Food Booth $642.00 Raffle Tickets at Garage sale $500.00 Total $11,894.00 Everyone who helped out in anyway deserve a great big thank you, It wouldn’t have happened with out you. ~Stan Salikin, Kimberley

Paid parking? I recently received a phone call advising me that handicap parking at the Cranbrook hospital must be paid for, also at the Cranbrook airport. Why? The Cranbrook Hospital is within the Cranbrook City limits. Why are seniors having to pay for parking when they have a certificate from the city for free parking? Why do the public and hospital staff have to pay for parking? Why does the public have to pay for parking at the health unit when this building is a provincial building and Interior Health is a provincial body? I am fed up with the Interior Health as they are a partner in Golden Life which owns senior homes from Rossland to Fernie and Kimberley to Invermere. Why? Come on folks, voice your resentment against this big problem. ~Marvin Skip Fennessy, Cranbrook P.S. Maybe we should all vote for the Green Party. Good job! I just wanted to let you know I am quite enjoying two recent additions to your publication: The Slugs and Hugs (what a good idea!) and the Letters to the Editor. I enjoy browsing the Advertiser, and also like the For Sale items listed under dollars amounts ($100, $200, etc ) another really good idea and a great way to find items for sale in one’s price range without plowing through a massive listing jumbled together. Keep up the great work – I enjoy your paper – especially the Friday crossword. Marilee Quist, Kimberley

Today’s garden furniture is elegant and sometimes expensive, so it should be taken care of in order to protect your investment. Where the yard is concerned, be sure to cut the grass back to a height of five centimetres, which is ideal for the winter. Leave the grass cuttings on the lawn. You can do the same thing with dead leaves. The lawn mower will mulch them, providing an excellent fertilizer for your lawn.

Every fall, conscientious homeowners do maintenance work on their homes in order to prepare for the winter. But what about the yard, the deck, and the flower beds? These jobs will only take up a few hours of your time, but they ensure that your outdoor living area will remain beautiful for years to come. First of all, if your patio or deck is dirty, clean the stones or deck planks thoroughly with a stiff brush in order to avoid even more dirt building up over the winter. If this isn’t sufficient, use a pressure washer. This way you’ll only have to give it a light cleaning when spring returns, and you won’t have to waste

BACK TO SCHOOL & REGISTRATION TIME 2013 Some tips to keep your brain healthy at school

My First Day of School

Photo submitted

(From left) Marissa Lewis and Cadence Kostiuk are back to school at Pinewood Elementary.

Maintaining concentration and keeping the memory sharp are a daily challenge for students. Fortunately, brain power is supple and can be developed by exercising it. Here are a few tips that can facilitate learning and remembering:

1. Good posture: sit comfortably, with back straight, shoulders relaxed, and feet flat on the floor. Avoid crossing your legs or, even worse, slumping over your desk. 2. Relax: inhaling and exhaling deeply through the nose allows you to relax and increase your level of concentration. 3. Choose to be attentive: be curious about what the teacher may have to say; don’t let yourself be distracted, and ask questions. 4. Take notes: as well as facilitating memorization, note taking

doesn’t leave room for day dreaming. It helps you stay alert and focused. 5. Explain things to yourself or to someone else: read over your notes, then hide them and explain out loud what you’ve just read. 6. Use your imagination: who says studying has to be boring? Singing while reading or varying the tone of voice while reading aloud stimulates different areas of the brain. This varied brain activity makes memorizing easier and faster. 7. Draw a picture:

a picture is worth a thousand words — the smallest of scribbles is easier for the brain to remember than a single word. 8. Take a break: go outside during break-

time. Think about something else, move around, and laugh. It will relax you and help you feel good.

Hunting Update 2013 On moose hunting by Mark Allardyce Concentrate on one area. Use the wind to your advantage, and use a wind indicator to detect the direction from which the air is flowing. During the rut or breeding season, hunt near lakes and ponds. Hunt for moose near food sources and water. Hunt the fringe areas, away from where other hunters are, away from the roads and traffic. Do not set up your camp on the edge of a likely hunting spot. Your noise and smells will chase any nearby moose away. Study and learn about the difference between Core Areas and Home Range. Learn to recognize the difference between fresh and old moose

sign. If you see or hear a moose just before or after dark, leave the area quietly and return early the next morning. The moose, if not spooked it will likely still be in the area. Seasons to Hunt Hunt during the moose rut... whenever possible. Hunt higher elevations during the early season. Late season moose hunting requires you to go deeper into the forest away from the openings. Be sure to carry a GPS or at the very least a compass for to ensure your safe return. Identify and learn to hunt the prime moose habitat. Tools to Use Use a Moose Call and learn how to use a call. Then put moose calling

Especially useful when you need to stalk a bull out in the open or when you have an incoming bull. Get the bull moose concentrating on the decoy and not you the shooter. Make use of a trail camera for moose hunting. We have written a review of the Spypoint Trail Camera IR-7 Maximize your advan-

Cow and Calf Moose Hunting Tips: Stay close to water sources. They use these areas for safety reasons. The biggest bulls will be attracted to these areas during the rut. Learn how to mimic a calf moose in distress. Often, cow moose within hearing distance will come to investigate even when it is not her own calf. Moose Hunting Safety Drink clean water... be sure the water you drink is free of beaver fever. Of course moose hunters always need to keep bear safety in mind while traveling in the woods. Tell someone where you are hunting. Leave a map and time of expected return. Look for fresh moose sign such as this rub... you’ll know there is a bull in the area! Before and After the Shot When tracking moose learn to recognize the circling patterns. Decide on the best shot placement for moose. Field dress your moose

I’ll give you an example: One area where we hunt moose we concentrate our efforts over an area that stretches along 22 Kilometers of logging road. This area comprises of adjoining meadows and logged areas, not all of which are visible from the main road. Use topographical maps and Google Earth to study the area you hunt or are

planning to hunt. Every year prior to hunting I use Google Earth as a study tool to refresh my memory. Get to know your area intimately and study the moose movements. On a daily basis we just keep going back to the likely locations, then repeat. If on a particular day there isn’t a moose standing in the meadow that you are at, doesn’t mean there won’t be one there later. As long as you are in an area where moose live, eventually you’ll cross paths. 2) This is a very important tip for moose hunting: Use a moose call. I gave a cow moose call and waited....the cow moose did not even look up, she just continued eating. After waiting about 10 minutes I called again, this time I received an instant response (commonly referred to as a grunt)... an unmistakable sound, a bull moose answered my moose call. He sounded like he was a long way off in the distance. I repeated the call nearly 10 minutes later, he answered again, and this time he sounded closer. 3) Use the wind to your advantage. 4) Hunt the Rut - The the mating season (Rut) for Moose in Canada is typically the last two weeks of September and goes though to near the end of October with the peak being the first two weeks of October. During this time moose are quite vocal and will frequently respond to a hunter using a cow moose call. Mark Allardyce, known as “The Moose Man” is the owner of www.allabout-moose.com, a onestop site that is extremely informative.

Hunting Update 2013 Sustainable hunting practices using the proper conservation model growing. The North American Wildlife Conservation Model: • Wildlife is a public resource. In the United States and Canada, wildlife are held in the public trust and managed by

government for the benefit of all people. • Eliminate the market for wildlife. Strong laws and enforcement in the United States and Canada make it illegal to sell the meat or parts of any wild animal in North America.

• Manage wildlife through law. Hunters are allowed to harvest surplus wildlife. Laws and regulations exist to protect wildlife populations and ensure fair opportunity. • Hunting should be democratic.

In North America, every citizen has an opportunity to hunt and fish in compliance with the law. Hunting is not limited by private land owners or special privilege. • Wildlife should only be killed only for legiti-

mate reasons. There must be a balance between opportunity and regulation. Many states and provinces have laws and regulations protecting against the “wanton waste” of wildlife. In North America, the

In British Columbia, successes from this model include whitetail deer, Rocky Mountain elk, Roosevelt elk and black bear. Working collaboratively, the United States and Canada manage land and wildlife to make sure that no country takes more than its share of the common resource. • Use science to guide wildlife management decisions. Wildlife management based on population estimates and habitat research helps ensure stewardship and prudent decision-making.

Obituaries

Obituaries OBITUARY

Harold Arthur Doan 1941-2013 Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Harold or Harry as many of his friends knew him by, passed away in the early morning of September 4, 2013 following a 3-year battle with Cancer. He was 71. Harold leaves to mourn his cherished wife of 32 years Valerie; Brother Dennis; Daughter Kelly, Step-son Jeff Bromley (Melanie) and Step-Daughter Leanne Hargrave (Bill) along with Grandchildren Tyler, Justin, Celeste, Jacob, Isabella and Gracie. And one recently arrived Great-Grandchild, Peyton. Harold was predeceased by his parents Edith and Art and four siblings, Reg, Betty, Gerald and Doris. Born in Bowsman, Manitoba, Harry relocated to Wilmer, BC in the 1960’s where he worked for the Parks Board in Kootenay National Park. Following that Harold started a career in the forest industry at the Canal Flats Sawmill and relocated to Kimberley in 1981 after meeting his wife, Valerie. Following a 32-year career at mill Harold retired in 2004 to a life of fishing, hunting, cheering on his Kootenay Ice as a long-time season ticket holder as well as never missing a dance recital, soccer, hockey or baseball game or a Karate tournament of his grandchildren. A memorial service will take place in Kimberley on Tuesday, September 10, at the Anglican Church at 11:00 am with a reception to follow in Anglican Church Hall immediately following. Cremation entrusted to McPherson Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers those wishing to remember Harold, a donation can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 19 - 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 2L9. Or for those preparing for Harold’s favourite time of year, hunting season, as you bugle in a bull elk or spot a four-point buck, please take the time to remember him doing what he loved to do. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Some serious muscle and dependability Overall: More towing and hauling muscle is in store for HD customers who demand plenty from these rigs, and Chrysler’s Ram truck division is happy to oblige with a beefedup turbo-diesel, tougher frames and greater allaround capacities. Powertrains: The 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is now the base engine for

3500-series trucks; three versions of the 6.7-litre six-cylinder Cummins turbo-diesel make 350, 370, and 385 horsepower and up to 850 poundfeet of torque. With General Motors, Ford and Chrysler trying to outdo each other in the heavy-truck category, you have to wonder where it will all end. The Ram 2500

and 3500 series pickups have upped the stakes with the optional Cummins turbo-diesel that’s available in bad, badder and baddest grades for 2013. The tamest of the 6.7-litre inline sixcylinder powerplants is rated at 350 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, while the intermediate version pushes those numbers up to 370 horsepower and 800 pound-feet. For maximum thrust and grunt, the 385-horse unit lays

down a mind-numbing 850 pound-feet of torque. Could 1,000 be far off in future models? The Cummins can be matched to a six-speed manual transmission (the only shift-it-yourself in its class), or a sixspeed automatic. The result is a truck that can haul and tow an inordinate amount of whatever you have; up to 7,730 kilograms of trailer weight and up to 820 kilograms of tongue weight using a conventional Class V Photo submitted

hitch. The turbo-diesel has a standard exhaust brake that uses the engine’s compression to help decelerate the vehicle. For 2013, the 3500-series HD can be ordered with the Hemi; previously it was exclusively installed in the 2500-series. Of course four-wheel-drive is available, but in the

Overall: The Fusion challenges for best-inclass fuel economy and best-looking sedan in one shot. Drivetrain: A 170-horsepower fourcylinder plus two optional turbocharged four-cylinders worth 179 and 237 horsepower. Arriving in early 2013 year are two gasoline-electric versions of Ford’s hybrid powertrains. The next-generation Ford’s Fusion represents a merging of high-fashion style with game- altering fuel economy, with significant technological treats coming along for the ride. The sedan’s primary eyecatcher is the dramatic roofline, suggesting kinship with the Audi A7, Volkswagen CC and CLS-class MercedesBenz. Another design highlight is the openmouth grille that greatly differs from the previ-

ous triple-bar fixture. The Fusion’s fashion statement extends to the cabin, with its fancier trim, comfier seats and a freshly pressed control panel. The tailors at Ford also let out the Fusion’s pants and lengthened the cuffs a bit. The distance between the front and rear wheels increases by five inches and the width and height by about an inch. Trunk room is the only reduction spot (likely due to a shorter deck), but only by about six per cent. The Fusion joins the Hyundai Sonata and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in abandoning a V6 option, but eventually there will be no fewer than five distinctive engine picks, including two Prius-like gasolineelectric hybrid systems. It all begins with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, while1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged four-

cylinder “EcoBoost” engines, worth 179 and 237-horsepower, respectively, are optional with the latter a requirement for all-wheel-drive Fusions. The 1.6 is billed as the thriftiest of the three, but in terms of fuel savings, the Hybrid and all-new Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid are really where it’s at. They arrive in the first quarter of 2013. Both employ a 141-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder combined with an electric motor to produce 188 net horsepower. Newly available communications and safety content includes keep-you-inline lane-monitoring system, keep-your-distance adaptive cruise control, confidenceboosting parking-spot assist and shouldercheck-augmenting blind spot and cross-traffic alerts.
