nnie Watts and a film crew climb aboard a small commercial fishing vessel, motoring down the Alberni Inlet as daylight wanes, ready for some night fishing. Some of those aboard the vessel, new to the Alberni Valley, are amazed to see dolphins during their trip. Others, like director/ producer Ian Toews, were thrust into action, reeling in nets as Watts caught fresh salmon. Watts and her mother, Dolly McRae—both accomplished chefs and cookbook authors— will create a traditional salmon feast over an open fire with those fish on an episode of
Untamed Gourmet next week. The episode, debuting on the Aboriginal People’s Television Network (APTN) on Tuesday, Sept. 17, follows the two chefs as they gather ingredients to prepare a feast together, cooking over an open fire. “We went on a salmon fishing trip at night with Annie,” said Untamed Gourmet director and producer Ian Toews, describing the show as a documenting of the process of hunting, gathering and eating food. “And we went out with Dolly to gather wild fruits and berries,” he said. McRae brought them to areas around the Alberni Valley to gather wild crab apples, cherries and kelp for her dishes. Continued / A3

◆ COVER STORY
Chefs go ‘wild’ with local menu From / A1
This is the second season of Untamed Gourmet which showcases Canadian chefs gathering ingredients native to the area to prepare a dish. Most of the chefs featured are aboriginal, which makes sense when it comes to showcasing wild, Canadian food, Toews explained. “You can’t have a wild food show without talking to aboriginals,” Toews said. “First Nation people in Canada have a very unique history; they lived off of the land.” Toews contacted McRae and Watts because of their notoriety. The mother and daughter team previously owned and operated Liliget Feast House, a popular Vancouver restaurant that served First Nations cuisine and was often frequented by celebrities. The two also co-wrote a cookbook called Where People Feast: An Indigenous People’s Cookbook and their cooking is often featured in the media. “In our research, looking for aboriginal chefs and food preparers, we very quickly discovered them,” Toews said. “For over a decade

their restaurant was a Vancouver hot spot.” McRae never intentionally set out to run a restaurant. She said she learned how to cook from her mother and that her daughter is the “real” chef as Watts has gone to cooking school. McRae fell into it in the early 1990s, when she was working on getting a Masters degree at UBC. While at school she heard about a
native youth group at UBC’s Museum of Anthropology that needed to raise $1,600 for a field trip. She volunteered to help them by making and selling bannock, as long as they participated in the making of it too. From a 10 kg bag of flour, McRae and the students were able to make 100 pieces of bannock and sold them for $1 each. In five days, they raised
$1,300. By the end of the summer, McRae had $25,000 in her bank account. “We were selling so much bannock,” McRae explained. “I even had to rent a bread mixer from a donut place because I couldn’t do it on my own anymore.” From there, McRae ended up selling bannock from a food cart, which then led to her opening up a restaurant near Vancouver’s English Bay. “I had a wonderful 12 years there,” McRae said. She only closed the restaurant because the owner of the property wanted to build condos. “We had famous people come in. Kim Cattrall, she went to the Vancouver Sun saying this was the best restaurant in Vancouver. Pierre Trudeau would bring his son Justin to eat
there.” For the television show, McRae and Watts prepared salmon in a number of different ways. One salmon dish is fanned out like a book with half of it smoked and half of it cooked. Other dishes prepared include wind dried salmon and salmon grilled over the fire. The menu also includes herring roe on kelp with eulachon, pine needle tea and McRae’s signature bannock, only this time made as wild berry bannock bread pudding. McRae said she wanted to showcase dishes that she was used to eating, which were handed down from her mother. McRae said she enjoyed the experience of being filmed for the episode in August last year. “We had lots of people following us,” she said. “[The film crew] were really excited and exhausted from the night fishing.” While McRae is retired from the restaurant business, people can still get a taste of her bannock, which she makes fresh and sells at the Farmers’ Market at Harbour Quay on Saturdays.

Port Alberni Toy Run president David Wiwchar and his wife Andrea promote this weekend’s event during the Fall Fair parade last Saturday.
Toy Run takes over Saturday The largest fundraiser on the west coast takes to the road this weekend. The 29th Annual Port Alberni Toy Run blasts into the Alberni Valley shortly after noon on Saturday, Sept, 14, bringing thousands of toys for needy children at Christmas, and tens of thousands of dollars for children’s programs throughout the year. Close to 1,500 motorcycles of every make, model, size, and colour are expected to gather at Little Qualicum Falls on Saturday.
After a ceremony to remember fallen riders, the Alberni Black Powder Club will fire a cannon at noon to start the run. Motorcycles will travel westbound along Highway 4, past Cameron Lake and through Cathedral Grove into Port Alberni, ending at Glenwood Centre around 1 p.m. Once at Glenwood Centre, there are games and events for children and families, as well as events for the thousands of riders who come from all over to attend the annual event.
Farms open gates to public tours WAWMEESH G HAMILTON AlbeRNi VAlley NeWS
Fun, locally grown food, and educating yourself about the benefits of local farms are behind Family Farms Day. The free family event takes place on Sunday, Sept. 15, and involves a tour of 11
farms throughout the Alberni Valley. “This is an opportunity for local residents to tour some of the local farms and connect the food they eat with who grows it,” said Parks and Recreation spokesperson Karen Freethy. Parks and Recreation is one of
four partners who organize this threeyear-old initiative. The other partners include Alberni Valley Transition Towns, Coastal Community Credit Union and the Vancouver Island Health Authority. The farms are located all over the Alberni Valley but are
mostly concentrated in Beaver Creek and Cherry Creek, Freethy said. The event has grown from five farms participating three years ago to 11 farms today. Farms still fall within the parks and rec mandate, Freethy said. Continued / A20

The City of Port Alberni can now add “Bear Smart status” to its many designations. Provincial environment minister Mary Pollock announced that the city received the Bear Smart designation on Sept. 7. “Since engaging in the Bear Smart program Port Alberni, a city with historically high levels of conflict with bears, has seen a consistent reduction in the level of conflict and number of bears destroyed,” Pollock said. The award is the culmination of a lot of work by a lot of people, the public awareness campaign of which won’t stop now, Bear Smart BC Consulting spokesperson Crystal McMillan said. “It takes an entire community to achieve something like this, and to continue to
improve it.” Bear Smart is a volunteer program encourages communities to brainstorm solutions that address the causes of human-bear
conflicts. Port Alberni is the first community on Vancouver Island to receive the designation and joins the Village of Lions Bay, Whistler, Squamish and Kamloops as Bear Smart communities. “Achievement of Bear Smart

status highlights the considerable efforts made by our community to reduce human-bear conflict, as well as our ongoing commitment to provide education and raise public awareness with regards to bear hazards,” Douglas said.
If you have appointed an executor for your estate, or are named as an executor for someone else’s estate, you should attend this complimentary seminar.

More food for thought Do you know where your food comes from? Not the grocery store you prefer, but the source of the food you eat? This week the ‘farm to table’ trend takes a real focus on the Alberni Valley. On Sunday, Sept. 15 there are 11 farms around the Valley opening their gates to the public so they can share what they grow and raise, right at the source. All of the farms will have goods for sale; the tour will provide an ideal opportunity for families to bring their children to farms and show them what the region has to offer. Two Port Alberni-based chefs are also underlining the message of eating local this week. Dolly McRae and her daughter, Annie Watts, will be featured in an episode of Untamed Gourmet on the Aboriginal People’s Television Network on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 8:30 p.m. McRae and Watts, who are also published cookbook authors, took film crews on a night of fishing salmon, as well as a gathering expedition for berries and other wild-growing things. They will prepare a feast over an open fire in their episode of this cross-Canada program, using the ingredients they collected from around the Alberni Valley. Forestry often gets the attention around Port Alberni, but these two events underline the natural abundance also found within our community. We have a lot to learn from our farmers, our First Nations and our rich agricultural history. We’ve been given a golden opportunity to take this lesson. — Alberni Valley News

ICTORIA – Local politicians from across B.C. are in Vancouver Sept. 16 to 20 to take part in the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention. There will be trivia reported as news, such as the cost of hotels. Suggestions to license mobility scooters or lower speed limits to 40 km/h, dreamed up in Vancouver Island retirement locales, will be rejected by delegates from the rest of the province. Serious discussion will revolve around a report by a UBCM executive committee to reshape the financial relationship between the province and local governments. If this proposal gets the support it deserves, Premier Christy Clark’s government will be asked to undo a couple of decades of political meddling in that
relationship. One problem for local governments is that they depend on property tax, a stable source of revenue but one that has no relationship to the property owner’s ability to pay. It tends to load costs onto lower-income groups such as seniors and renters. Economic growth results mainly in increased corporate and personal income tax revenues as well as sales taxes, which aren’t shared with local governments. One key proposal is to return to a system of revenue sharing grants introduced by the Social Credit government in the 1980s. They were funded by one point each from personal and corporate income tax and six per cent of sales, fuel and resource tax revenues, thus increasing in years when provincial revenues
were strong. The UBCM proposal is to put a share of provincial revenues into an infrastructure bank, to be distributed by the organization on a more stable basis. Saanich Mayor Frank Leonard, one of the authors of the report, uses a basketball analogy to describe the current system of federalprovincial grants for road and bridge projects. It’s a “jump ball,” where communities have to apply to a fund when it’s offered and then see who gets it. Even if a community wins the jump ball, they may find themselves with costs inflated by a hot construction market and an arbitrary deadline to get the job done. Then there are new regulations imposed by senior governments.

The most dramatic example these days is a 2020 federal deadline for Greater Victoria to construct land-based sewage treatment. Even with federal and provincial cost sharing, this project is going to land heavily on property tax bills, including those of pensioners and poor renters who will have it passed on to them. Leonard points to another arbitrary system, provincial facilities that pay grants in lieu of property taxes. Saanich is home to the University of Victoria, a community of 25,000 people that needs water and sewer service, as well as police and fire protection. Saanich gets an annual grant in lieu of property taxes of $120,000 for UVic, enough to cover wages and benefits for one cop and maybe some gas money. Cariboo Regional District chair Al Richmond, co-chair of the UBCM committee, is concerned about new water and flood protection legislation the province wants to impose.

His district and others like it have thousands of kilometres of riverfront, with relatively few property owners. Interior communities also want BC Hydro to pay something for power lines, as is now being done with some aboriginal territories. Local politicians will be expecting a sympathetic ear from the new version of the B.C. Liberal government. Former Quesnel
councillor Coralee Oakes is the new community, sport and cultural development minister, with direct responsibility for local government issues. And one of the original members of this UBCM committee was former Langley City mayor Peter Fassbender, who is now minister of education. Mailbag: Feedback on news items Agriculture is agriculture To the Editor,
I support the idea of Stephen’s Sheet Metal building becoming a viable agricultural operation. The produce is immaterial, if it is approved by the Government of Canada, follows the rules and regulations, then issue the license and proceed. Oh, by the way, I own a house on Fifth Avenue between Bute and Redford streets. I currently have to pass the derelict building to get to my property, I therefore feel I should have one of the bigger says in the matter. It’s, yes, in my back yard please. Take back the profit and tax revenue from the illegal growers and put it in the public purse for all to benefit . Business is business. Also, if you don’t live in the area or own property there, then please keep falsely based objections to it to yourself. Please don’t tell me you live in upper South Port or Cameron Heights and then rant and rave (that) you don’t want it on Fourth Avenue and Bute Street. Because to be honest if it was legal under law I would even support
a brothel there. Anything is better than abandoned, derelict, fire scorched buildings. Its time to stop whining and start building To be denied permission to run a viable legal business, even if its a pot grow op at Fourth Avenue and Bute Street, is as insane as offering to sell a viable and vibrant quay to a developer. Frank Hands, Port Alberni
Bombers still have value To the Editor, Elimination of the Martin Mars water bomber in the Alberni Valley is an emotional pinch for the people of Port Alberni. A forest service staff bureaucrat telling the owner of Coulson Group of Companies that “it is none of his business why the government would discontinue a forest fire fighting contract” is lacking respect. OK, so these planes lack someone’s opinion of maneuverability. This is a further example of the shredding relationship between rural BC, and the big city valuation and the Victoria governance model.
In 1967, I was a 19-year-old logger fighting the Taylor River forest fire when both bombers flew right over our heads at 3,500 feet on a hillside above Sproat Lake. The ground shook and the smoke filled the forest as they dumped their water and went off to scoop more water from the lake. They were massive, powerful, impressive and needed. With my family a few years later, I drove west up Sutton Pass when both mars planes roared overhead for a drop on an inaccessible mountaintop fire above the pass. Another time, along Highway 4, a mars bomber rose up directly in front of me over the trees having just loaded up from Sproat Lake. What a rush. Ukee Days summer fair in Ucluelet, my home town, always enjoyed a demonstration water drop from the mars. During the ‘Save Clayoquot Sound’ anti logging protest in 1993, it warmed the loggers’ hearts to have the demonstration mars visit on the ‘Support the Loggers’ day. I live in Port Alberni
now and always go out on my deck to watch when a bomber flies low over the town on its way out to a fire or returning to home base. A recent cruise ship visit to Port Alberni was treated to a water drop demonstration beside the ship in the harbour. This city and the rural BC communities built this province’s wealth. Bureaucrats and politicians must respect and honour that. Give us something we want and show respect for the millions of dollars that we sent to Victoria. Bruce Hornidge, Port Alberni
F-bombs all ‘fowled’ up To the Editor, I’d like to respond to the Horner’s Corner column in the Aug. 29 Alberni Valley News, in which Neil Horner dealt with the first time his teenaged son had dropped the F-bomb to explode in Dad’s delicate ears. It brought back a long-dead memory of the horrified look on my mother’s face when I let slip a series of newly-acquired nouns, adjectives and verbs within her earshot, while
on leave from my first trip to sea in the Merchant Navy. My vulgar vocabulary had rapidly developed with the everyday, some cases every sentence, use of such words on board ship. I was in my midteens when I joined my first ship, probably no older than Mr. Horner’s son. By the time I swallowed the anchor over a quarter century later I’d probably learned to cuss in about 25 languages, but the F-bomb is universally used. I always got a kick when some shipmates from certain Pacific countries pronounced words starting with “f ” and “p” in a somewhat mixed-up fashion; the result was more pucks flying around than at a hockey shooting practice. Horner’s Corner has appeared in the Parksville-Qualicum News for several years, and is always interesting. Only recently he told how he inherited a parrot, and I cannot help but wonder if his son’s F-bomb was a result of listening to the feathered one’s fowl language ? Bernie Smith, Parksville

Three dead in crash WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni VAlley news
Collision specialists with the RCMP are still investigating what caused a fiery single-vehicle crash that claimed the lives of three people from Ahousaht. RCMP responded to calls of an accident at Marion Creek on Highway 4 at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday. A single vehicle traveling west drove off the right side of the road, rolled over,
and burst into flames. According to the BC Coroners Office, the fire caused extensive damage and a special forensics team is working to make exact identification. A cause hasn’t been established yet, RCMP Cpl. Mike Elston said. “It was a clear day, sunny, warm and there was little traffic,” Elston said. “It’s not an exceedingly dangerous spot, but it’s a windy road that can be unforgiving.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

GORDON DEVEREAUX 1930 - 2013 It is with great sadness the family of Gordon Carlyle Devereaux announce his passing on August 28, 2013. As Gordie always did, he did it his way: at home, surrounded by his family, his loving wife of 62 years, Eileen, daughters Lorene Yarocki (Dave), Karen Riley (Derek) and sons Brian, Bernie (Pauline) and Russell (Nathalie). His 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren were a constant source of great pleasure in his later years. Gordie was born in South Vancouver to the late Arthur and Margaret Devereaux on July 26, 1930 and three years later the family, including his late older brothers Jack and Leonard (Bud), relocated to Port Alberni. Gordie grew up in Port Alberni, where he met his future wife Eileen. They were married in November of 1950 and over the next 10 years had five children. Gordie worked for MacMillan Bloedel for many years, starting in Port Alberni in 1953, then moving to Powell River in 1967 to accept a promotion as supervisor in the Kraft mill. He took early retirement in 1988. After 40 years in Powell River, Gordie and Eileen relocated to Parksville to be more central to their family and their many friends. Gordie was famous for his love of food. There was virtually nothing that he didn’t like to eat! He had a green thumb and would collect cuttings and seedlings during his travels to transplant in his garden. Any and all friends were welcome to stop in at Gordie and Eileen’s “Inn, where they could count on a drink, a bite, and a bed. The front door was always open. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice in Gordie’s honour.

they are and what they provide,” Carter said. “People need to be aware that food is available and that it is good quality.” Increased food awareness is leading to a resurgence in farming, said Jon Bell, the president of the BC Farm Markets Association. “Anytime there is an issue with food then people become aware of it broadly and quickly through media,” Bell said. “Everyone these days wants to know where your food is from, who grew it and how it was treated.” An aging farm population and high land cost have thus far dissuaded younger people from taking up farming, but that’s beginning to change, Bell said. “There’s a whole new generation that is starting to look at farming as a lifestyle they would value,” he said. Murder at the Capitol SEPT. 20: | Mayhem ensues when Marsha thinks her husband is plotting her murder. Portal Players’ Dramatic Society’s new performance, Let’s Murder Marsha, opens Sept. 20 at the Capitol Theatre. What happens when a happy housewife named Marsha, hopelessly addicted to reading murder mysteries, overhears her loving husband plotting to murder her? Or is he? Expect hilarity to follow in this broad, family-friendly comedy opening at Port Alberni’s Capitol Theatre on Friday, Sept. 20. The Monk Ferris comedy Let’s Murder Marsha raises the curtain on Portal Players’ 2013-14 season. The play will run Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. until Oct. 2. Director David McGarry has brought Teresa Mulligan and Scott Lowe together again to star in this fast-paced production as the eponymous Marsha and her plotting husband…or is he? Alberni Valley audiences may remember Mulligan from her riveting performance in The Glass Menagerie under Lowe’s direction. The ensemble cast also includes veterans to the Capitol Theatre stage: Andrea Markiewicz, last seen in The Mousetrap, and Rick Vissia, who lit up the stage last year in Reefer Madness. City gives nod to develop uptown park area WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni VAlley news
The public area formerly known as Sea Cadet Park on lower Argyle Street is open for development. But how many trees will be left standing on the city-owned property will be up to a developer and the city to determine. City council on Monday (Sept. 9) voted to proceed with a request for proposals to develop the area now called Harbour View. City planner Scott Smith proposes that the area, which is presently one lot, be sub-divided into three lots: a 5,700-squaremetre area behind the Carmoor Block along Kingsway Avenue; a 1,500-squaremetre lot bordering Argyle Street; and a

1,800-square-metre stand of trees in the middle of the two lots. The adjacent stand of trees along Harbour Road are on property belonging to Catalyst Paper and aren’t part of the
development, Smith noted in a report. A sub-division is one idea that would maximize the development of the area while still maintaining the stand of trees. The
idea would encourage business retention and aid in promoting Port Alberni as a place to visit and live. Mayor John Douglas asked Smith if framing the development
as two land parcels with a stand of trees in between would dissuade someone from purchasing the entire package. “It’s framed that way because that’s what council requested,” Smith said. Council passed a motion requesting an RFP for development of the area at a meeting last June. In 2005, council tried to sell the site but citizens beat back the initiative saying that the stand of trees should remain on the property. The experience left Port Alberni with a bad reputation among developers, a report from economic development manager Pat Deakin previously noted. Privately, businesses were in favour of the city selling the property for
development, Coun Cindy Solda said. But council was beat up at a public meeting about the matter. “Businesses never said anything because they were afraid of being boycotted,” Solda said. The area was also in the news again in 2007 when the city’s waterfront redevelopment plan was introduced, suggesting development of 200 residential units in a four-storey building in the area. Although that plan recommended retention of “the majority of existing trees”, people were again upset that the area might be developed. One parcel of property might bring something to the area, Coun. Wendy Kerr said. “But I”m a tree

hugger. Leave as many trees standing as possible,” she said. Councillors Chopra, Cole and Washington spoke in favour of creating one parcel of land and allowing development of the whole thing. “It looks like a piece of pie,” Chopra said of the patchwork of three parcels. “Leave it as one site and ask the developer to save some trees,” he said. The city has tools such as a restrictive covenant that would enable a stand of trees saved, city manager Ken Watson said. Developers will speak their minds about what they envision for the property, Watson added. “They’re not shy. If they want it they’ll say,” he said.
