COMPETITIVE

Under varying degrees of overcast skies and sun, Sylvan Lake Sailing Club’s annual End of Summer Hummer brightened the waters with skillful competition and colourful spinnakers during two days of racing Saturday and Sunday. The race included 14 boats in Division 1 and five boats in Division 2. Claiming top prize were Michael Clements’ crew on The MRS in Division 1 with two firsts, four seconds and a third in seven races. They were followed by Norma Turner’s crew in L’eau Rider and Tom Marr-Laing’s crew in Zephyr. Division 2 honours went to Peter Bennet’s crew in Affordable which placed first in all seven races. Second place was won by Nick Patridge’s crew in Altered States with six seconds and a third. Dmitry Verkhovsky’s crew in Red Herring captured third position. Top, a course change was signalled as boats headed around a marker in the middle of one of Saturday’s races. Bottom left, entrants in Division 1 jockeyed for position at the start line. Bottom right, Getting ready to gybe are Rita Johnson, Tracey Andersen, Mike Clements (a North American Marten champion who replaced Steven Johnson for the races) and Rick Howard aboard the MRS. Priming walls and exterior surfaces seals the area and prolongs the wet edge of finished coats, reducing lap marks and ensuring a uniform colour and luster. There is a common myth that priming walls – especially those that have been painted before – isn’t necessary. But many layers of latex paint can actually result in a surface that is very absorbent and requires priming. It is usually not necessary to apply primer to sashes, trim and doors that already have an enamel finish. If extensive repair work has been done, however, you should apply a primer to these areas. Community picnic marked end of summer’s centennial celebrations by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News

Wrapping up the summer’s centennial celebration events was the community picnic Sunday, which saw families and community members gather at Centennial Park to enjoy a variety of festivities together. Food, including birthday cake, was served at the picnic, while musical entertainment was provided on a stage set up in the park. Games and face painting were available for children. Adverse weather in the morning threatened to put a damper on the event, but skies cleared in time for people to gather and enjoy food, activities and entertainment together. “The weather has co-operated, and the turnout is fantastic,” said Brenda Dale, chair of Sylvan Lake Centennial Celebrations Task Force. She felt the picnic was a fitting way to end a summer that saw many people from Sylvan Lake and other places take part in centennial celebrations. After receiving so much positive feedback, she couldn’t be any happier with the way things went. “The feedback from the community has been great,” she said. “We’ve tried to engage as much of the community as we could, and I haven’t gotten anything negative. “How could you not like something like this?” Dale said attendance and community participation has grown progressively at each centennial-related Sylvan Lake Centennial Celebrations Task Force event this year. Candidates have varying ideas; study their platforms School’s back in session, the last lingering warmth of the summer is disappearing and mornings have been cloaked in fog which burns off as the day progresses. Perhaps its the hot air being generated by the coming municipal election. The temperature has certainly increased as the sprint through September to the Oct. 21st election begins. We’re guaranteed to have an election worthy of note this year with three competent candidates contesting the mayor’s position and many lining up for the six council seats. This week’s Sylvan Lake News features stories on the latest candidate to announce for mayor, Sean McIntyre. Also included are profiles on council candidates Chris Lust, Megan Chernoff and information on Dale Plante’s switch from the mayoralty race to that of councillor. We’ve heard rumblings of other council candidates and fully expect, in next week’s paper to add to the list such that there will be more than six candidates all urging residents to weigh the options and cast their votes intelligently. Once nominations are filed on Sept. 23 we’ll know exactly who’s going to be on the ballot. In the meantime, it behooves residents to get to know the people who want to guide our community into the future, who want to work as a team with others elected to retain and improve the quality of living we enjoy and consider the questions posed by continued growth. Seek the candidates at public functions, question them about your concerns and provide your ideas. This is the time in the election process when they’re most available to listen

and learn. Because they are elected by the community at large instead of from speSteve Dills cific districts as in Sylvan Lake News larger municipalities, everyone should be engaging these people in discussion about Sylvan Lake — why you live here, what you love about the community, and what can be done to improve it for you and yours. Sylvan Lake & District Chamber of Commerce is hosting two forums to allow candidates greater exposure to the electorate. These are always fascinating venues where platforms are announced and questions from residents provide an interesting view of what’s on people’s minds. The first, the mayoralty debate, will be held on Friday, Oct. 4 from 5-9 p.m. at the community centre. The second, a councillor’s forum, will take place on Friday, Oct. 11 at the same times and place. Be sure to mark these dates in your handy calendar or electronic device and plan to attend. You’ll be pleased with the calibre of candidates seeking to represent our community and make wide-ranging decisions that could affect us for years to come. Then, of course, make sure you vote on Oct. 21. During the last election just 31.2 per cent of eligible voters marked ballots. We need to improve this substantially to ensure those elected are the choices of the majority of our community.

Continuing growth in Sylvan Lake means, as well, that many people have begun to call Sylvan Lake home since the last election. This will be their first chance to vote here — we encourage our new neighbours and friends to get involved in the democratic process. Particularly since the next election won’t be for another four years (an increase of one year in the term with this election).

Let’s all grow our community together Dear Editor, Every Thursday we look forward to reading the Sylvan Lake News. Of course each week we read “Letters to the Editor”. It always amazes me to read letters to the editor from the same people. These same people always have a critical opinion no matter what the topic is. Lakeshore, beach, over spending by council, fire trucks, toilets and the downtown. These people have become … judge and jury. These people have become selfappointed judge and jury. Monday October 21st will be the town election. Interesting these people, I will call judge and jury won’t run for town council or mayor. They feel by sitting in the bleachers or the stands they get a better perspective and write letters to the editor. At times the editor can be judge and jury and write their slant on issues. Steve is a tireless hard working individual and

Another serious accident at highways 20 and 11 intersection Dear Editor, Regarding the Highway 781/Highway 11 issue Once again today, I arrived at the intersection of Highway 20 and Highway 11 to find a serious accident had just occurred. I have lost count of the number of accidents I have come across at that hazardous intersection. The controversy regarding the Highway 781/Highway 11 intersection seems to have died down considerably, as citizens of Sylvan Lake have realized that their concerns have simply been ignored in favour of a decision taken against the will of the majority; a decision that seems to fly in the face of safety and common

sense. The Highway 20/Highway 11 intersection is very dangerous, and many of the accidents result from cars turning onto Highway 20 north from the eastbound lanes of Highway 11. The westbound lanes of Highway 11 approach the intersection uphill, and it is difficult to always see oncoming traffic. I would be very interested to see the statistics concerning the accident rate at this intersection, real numbers, not some fabricated spin designed to bolster the misguided decision. G. At Monday’s town council meeting changes in the survey for the proposed railway crossing over CNR to connect 2nd Street East with 4th Street S.E. were discussed. Mr. Gerry Phillion attended and agreed with the alterations in the plan made necessary to comply with requirements of the railway company. It will be necessary for the town to acquire some land from Mr. Phillion for the crossing. In the new arrangement it was proposed that the town would cancel a

McIntyre running for town’s top spot; Plante to seek councillor’s position by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Sylvan Lake’s mayoralty race gained one more candidate and lost another last week. Sean McIntyre, a first-term councillor, announced he’s running for the top spot while Dale Plante, endorsed McIntyre’s candidacy and said he’ll seek a second term as a councillor instead of his previously announced intention to enter the contest for the mayor’s position (see separate story). “It is with much thought and consideration that I have chosen to put my name forward,” said McIntyre. “Sylvan Lake is the town I grew up in; the town I love. The time is right for me to step forward and lead a movement toward constructive change for our community.” He indicated government needs to “function in integrity, transparency and accountability. When acting on behalf of anyone, these traits are vital, when acting on behalf of a community they are a prerequisite.” McIntyre’s platform is based on leading a change “in the way we communicate”, “in the way we engage each other”, “in the way we engage government”, and “in the way we approach our future”. “We need to work together towards one goal — community,” he said in a prepared statement. “Whether it’s the annual budget, a discussion about sidewalks, planning a subdivision, or considering development of the downtown, the good of the community needs to be forefront in the minds of our local government. We need to be mature enough to consider opposing points of view. We need to be humble enough to admit when mistakes were made, and willing to correct them. We need to be focused on the health of our town, more so than the condi-

tions of our pride. And finally, we need to build community in a town that already exists. We need to work together to nurture what we have and develop what we lack. Sylvan Lake is ready for change.” Discussing communications, he said, “clear communication, as a priority, is key to our future, and to our prosperity”. “We need to engage each other,” McIntyre said. Whether it’s a new playground or a major change in planning the Sean McIntyre community needs to be consulted on potential changes and “the people need to be involved in forming the community we will become. Every opportunity needs to be given for information

and input, so we can all be aware and engaged as we grow as a town.” Other levels of government have the potential to effect our daily life in Sylvan Lake, said McIntyre. “Whether it be access to the lake, highway changes, or health care, the needs of Sylvan Lake need to be considered, and the voice of our community must be heard. We must engage governments around us to ensure our needs are met.” We have a vibrant community, he said. “We have a robust and resilient population and a town to match. We have a bright future and a passionate people that are pursuing it. Key decisions will always be before us, and we need to address them with a responsible outlook and a firm grasp on reality. That

said, we can’t lose sight of what we have. The natural beauty that surrounds us, the volunteerism that is among us, and the community spirit that may be dormant in some, but is alive and well in our town. The tools are at our disposal to build community, the task now is putting them to good use.” McIntyre concluded, “I will continue to stand for integrity, transparency, accountability and inclusiveness; and I will continue to speak up and act on the best interests of the town I grew up in and love.” Other candidates who have announced they’re seeking the mayor’s position are the current mayor, Susan Samson, and Matt Prete.

Chernoff seeking council seat; believes getting young people involved is important by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Megan Chernoff learned the value of volunteering while still in high school in Castlegar, B.C. “My family have always been huge volunteers,” she said. When she moved to Sylvan Lake seven years ago, it was just natural for her to seek opportunities to volunteer. She’s currently on the town’s Municipal Planning Commission, review committee for Northeast, Southeast and South area structure plans, Family & Community Support Services board, and has been involved with the Optimist Club and other town events. Now she’s announced she’s running for a seat on town council. “I feel like running for council is the next step. There are so many things I’ve gotten into I’d like to dive a little deeper,” said the 26-year-old. Planning is one of the areas that interests her as it has interested her father. He’s been Mayor of Castlegar since 2005 and on council since 1987 with the exception of two years. Her father “always encouraged me to share my voice and passion for my community. He always said that community or the sense of community is what is the heart and soul of where you live.”

Megan Chernoff Chernoff operates her own marketing business and works from home which gives her flexibility in her schedule to do the volunteering and time to spend on council duties if elected. Expanded health care in Sylvan Lake is one of the topics that she’s concerned about. “I’m excited to do more, we can advocate like crazy,” she said, noting the decision will ultimately be made elsewhere. “I’d love to see the downtown continue on with revitalization.” Chernoff is also intrigued by Sylvan Lake’s population. “When I read the census, a huge population of the town is under 35 but they’re not represented on council. I’d like to see diversity sitting around the table.” Reflecting on her own situation,

she believes getting young people involved is important. “If you grew up volunteering, actively involved, it’s always something you will do,” she said. “If we get more young people involved they will grow up and do the same thing.” Chernoff believes Sylvan Lake is a great community with a tremendous future for all generations. “It’s a place I’d like to raise my kids and a place my parents can come to and be happy as well.” “I am passionate about growing our community and getting our youth and young adults inolved in shaping Sylvan Lake’s future,” she said. “Equally important as our younger population are our seniors. We need to insure our seniors are treated with dignity and they have the ability to have their voices heard.” Besides health care, she promises to be a “strong advocate” for “housing that seniors can afford and can expect to live out their lives in whatever form they choose”. Asked about the reaction to her candidacy from friends and acquaintances, she said “a lot of people are not surprised. Most of the people I’ve spoken to so far have been very supportive. I’m excited to get out some more.” To learn more about her check her Facebook page, Megan Chernoff for Sylvan Lake Council.

Plante seeking second term as town councillor by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Dale Plante has decided to seek a second term as town councillor rather than run for the mayor’s position. “This decision is based on my conviction that in order to maximize the wealth of experience I have gained over the past three years on council, and to most effectively use the trust and influence I have gained through it to the future benefit of

Sylvan Lake, a position on the council team is the strongest choice,” he wrote on his Facebook page ‘Dale Plante for Council’. In an interview Monday he said he’s endorsing and getting behind Sean McIntyre’s run for the top elected position. Plante feels McIntyre will be able to engage younger people and get them involved in the election process and town politics. “Sean’s leadership, vision and commitment to Sylvan Lake is contagious and unquestionable,” Plante

wrote. “His ability to connect, engage and to mobilize the young electorate of our town is crucial as we plan for the future.” Planted added, “My passion for this town is unwavering and my full expectation for a bright future for our town is non-negotiable. If reelected to council I will continue to be totally engaged in every aspect of this town and endeavour to be a strong voice of conviction on the council team.”

Harvest is now underway in Red Deer County, having started slightly later than usual, according to agriculture services manager Art Preachuk. He attributes the later start to inclement weather earlier in the year, which lasted longer than many in the area had hoped. “Because it was still snowing at the end of April, and with the cold weather, things didn’t start off as quick in May, and the dampness and the rain we’ve had through May, June and July doesn’t lend to an early harvest,” he said. Nonetheless, conditions are still “pretty good”, he maintained. “I don’t think anybody’s complaining about it, it’s never perfect.” Preachuk said a lack of moisture last September led to a non-stop harvest, which resulted in the fatigue of many farmers. “That’s what you need for harvest, good conditions without fighting the rains and tough straw and getting stuck.” He described this year as being a

“pretty lacklustre year”, with some crops receiving damage from hail, winds and moisture from diseases. Expecting the unexpected, however, can go a long way in battling potentially threatening conditions. “You never know what’s going to hit you, and the only thing you can bank on is it’s not going to be the same as last year,” said Preachuk. “Then it’s a matter of staying ahead of things and scouting your fields and knowing what’s developing. Then you can make the assessment of whether or not to take action on a bug or disease or whatever it might be.” Scouting and monitoring fields and being aware of certain conditions can create a better chance to identify potential harms and dangers, according to Preachuk. Doing so, he feels, is much better than waiting until the end of the season and trying to, at that point, determine what went wrong. “That’s a lot harder, and you can’t do anything about it,” he said. “You’ve got to be on it and be looking for things that are unusual, and be ready to expect anything.”

Chris Lust During her career, Lust has worked in five different municipalities. She came to Sylvan Lake in 1979 as its first recreation director. Here she met her husband, Barry, now a retired H. J. Cody High School teacher, and raised their three children. After six

years with the town, she did contract work while raising her family. Then she worked with the Town of Lacombe for 16 years and has been at the City of Red Deer for the past seven years. She’s currently divisional strategist with Community Services, a position she described as project based. An active volunteer, Lust is currently chairperson of the town’s Community Services standing committee, a member of the Centennial Celebrations Task Force, the town’s Subdivision and Development Appeal Board and chairperson of Activ8 Sylvan Lake, a group which is starting to promote physical activity of residents. “More people, more active, more often,” is their goal. Last year she was on the town’s Municipal Planning Commission. Among her goals are having an engaged community where people feel they are being heard and have the opportunity to be involved in decisions that affect their lives and creating a vibrant and inviting downtown core — “a really happening place where we can create an experience both for local residents and people coming to our community”. “Creating a healthy business environment will be important to retaining current businesses as well as encouraging establishment of new enterprises … Strategic downtown revitalization is essential to bringing vibrancy to the area.” Lust added she’s “pleased to see what’s happening in the Municipal Development Plan in terms of walkability. We need to look at it differently from what we do today. Design subdivisions so they’re convenient to walk and bike where you need to go, it’s easy to get there.” Her interest there goes back to her physical education background. “We need to get people healthier.” It’s important,” Lust said, “to provide recreation and culture facilities as well as preserve Sylvan Lake’s many outdoor opportunities. These essential quality of live components ensure that the interests of young families and seniors alike are protected.” Another interest of hers is safety. “It’s one of the things I’ve thought about a lot. A parent can it f t perfec kiss his or her child at the door and send them to school knowing they’re going to be safe. That covers a whole lot of things.” Lust said, “it’s about being welcoming and inclusive as a community.”

Sylvan Lake as great today as it was 50 years ago Dear Editor, I have been a resident of Sylvan Lake year-round for four years. I am a taxpayer, and all the other yada yada qualifiers that go with it. I am a senior as of this week, and have

fond memories of my childhood in an empty, heavily forested Central Alberta. Sylvan Lake was beautiful then. But I grew up, and over the last 30 years, Alberta has as well. There are over two million more peo-

ple in Alberta now than there was when I was a lad, and the bulk of them live in Calgary, Edmonton, and parts in between. And most of those people love Sylvan Lake as much as I do. While I do not endorse everything the town council has done, I recognize that they have had no easy ride for the last decade. They should be held accountable for some things, such as the waving of bylaws so a developer could tear up the water front, make the marina unaffordable for most the public and charge inflated prices for boat launching. If you think that decision didn’t hurt our town, take a look at the vacancies in the mall across the street, or the lack of families out boating. By the same token, look at our lake front. Beautiful walkways, picnic sites and grassy areas full of people from all over the province. We don’t have a lot of sandy beach. We do have a clean beautiful lake and a park area people love to use as a family meeting place. Now it does seem like we finished a five year plan in two years, and the bill is going to be a bitter pill, but I remem-

ber all the complaining when construction of the bathrooms left the beach under construction for two years. It only makes sense to do the Alberta thing and “Git er done!” In my mind, there is only two points that should concern us about lake levels. What is natural, and what provides us with a healthier lake? As for the whining about people coming here to enjoy our lake and park: well, it is ours to share, and a responsibility we have. I remember reading in an Edmonton paper a few years back about Edmonton taxpayers complaining that people coming to their city to use centralized services weren’t paying for use of their roads, rails, and services. It didn’t matter to them that they had all those services at their finger tips. I wonder if we sound that dumb. I am so tired of walking past a whole lot of the same businesses on the water front, with mounds of cigarette butts, spills, and much, much worse on the walks in front of their businesses, complaining about people coming here and not spending money. Those bars seem full

enough. You wait in line for the only place that sells ice cream. The taxpayer picks up the tab for cleaning the streets in front of them. And it never seems to come up that a good deal of our downtown emptied out right around the same time as the introduction of the box store. We aren’t going to be like we were in the ‘50s again. And thank God for that! If you want to enjoy the lake these days, take a walk down the beach, smell the aromas or so many different styles of food. Listen to all the different languages, and note some of the cultural clothing on display. See large happy families who know what Canada has to offer, and choose to be together at a place we are lucky enough to live. Watch the sail boats, and water skiers, sit on a deck and take in what we have right here, every day. Although there is room for improvement, I love the new Sylvan Lake. I feel sorry for people who don’t, but there are lots of places where no one wants to live, and property would be cheap there. Ian McLean, Sylvan Lake

It all starts with a decision, then a step forward Dear Editor, In less than two months Sylvan Lake, along with every other municipality in Alberta, will decide on the direction and future of their communities. On October 21 we will, as a community, decide who will serve as our mayor and as councillors for the next four years. While the process will be quick in comparison, the results will have a lasting impact. Residents will be tasked with choosing representatives who will make important decisions that could take effect as early as this fall, and potentially impact us through the next 50 years. Every resident will play a part in collectively choosing the direction of our community. Some will vote for a new direction, some will vote for the same direction as years past, and some will not vote and in doing so effectively support no direction. Every vote, and non-vote will be counted.

During the last election in 2010 Sylvan Lake had 7,557 eligible voters. 2,355 residents played a part in choosing the current mayor and council, and 5,202 chose to give no direction. As we consider our votes, understand a councillor represents one vote of seven when it comes to decision making; and as always in a democracy, the majority rules. One of the largest tasks on council isn’t just making the right decision for the good of the people, it’s building consensus. That’s a challenge among just two people in a relationship, and even more challenging with seven adults with a community at stake. With this in mind we need to think about what Sylvan Lake is. Just as importantly we need to envision what Sylvan Lake should be, and who should represent it. In my eyes, our representation should reflect our community.

Make cash not trash!

#ShouldaUsedRedDeer

According to the spring 2013 census, we have a population of more than 13,015, 54 per cent of which are under the age of 35, bucking the national trend. That means in addition to having integrity, being dedicated, working to be informed, and having a vision for our future, our next mayor and council members would ideally be comprised of a healthy mix of men and women, who will vary in age, and be in-tune with the needs of the youth, families, adults, and seniors that make up our population. This is a to call to action. A call for a diverse and dedicated slate of candidates to represent all of Sylvan Lake effectively in the coming election. Yes, the schedule of council is demanding and the position highly scrutinized, but if you love this community, you are dedicated, and have integrity; I encourage you to consider a tour of duty on council. Sloboda intends to join U of A Golden Bears next season by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

A Sylvan Lake athlete is among the “first wave of 2014 Golden Bear football recruits”, according to a story on the University of Alberta’s website. “Intent on joining (head coach Chris) Morris and his rebuild of the Golden Bears’ football program” ten high school recruits sat at tables on Foote Field turf last Thursday,

framed around the big ‘A’, to sign ‘letters of intent’ and declare they wanted to be part of Morris’ Golden Bears revival. Among those signing was TJ Sloboda of Sylvan Lake who was a starting member of the Team Alberta silver medal squad and is in his final year with the H. J. Cody Lakers. By signing the letters, recruits have entered into an agreement to play Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) football for the Golden Bears

$1.5 million dollars for a new ßretruck I am writing this to address a possible purchase of the truck and to look at the benefactors. The truck I suggested is virtually brand new- and has never been used to fight a fire, Fully certified and ready to go. It is being sold by a municipality to decrease their debt. It has 5000 miles on it. To me that sounds well worth investigating. As previously stated the truck could be used to establish the fire fighting rating for the town. A fire rating is used to set insurance rates for large hotels. By increasing the towns rating the hotels insurance can be decreased substantially. Simple home insurance is not affected by the purchase of a aerial fire truck. Hence the homeowner taxpayer receives little benefit, the benefit goes to specific businesses. I proposed if the $300,000 truck was purchased and financed. The insurance savings of the hotels and other future large structures could make the truck a NO COST TO TAXPAYER'S PURCHASE. It would be paid for by a simple break even levy paid for by the hotel for enhanced service. This was recommended and you can see what the replies have been. I oppose any fingers in the pie scenario of business. My history has been as a construction superintendent including Canada Place Edmonton as well as the Story Land Valley Zoo in Edmonton. I have lived in Sylvan Lake for about 15 yrs. Two of my children attended high school in Sylvan Lake and yes, in the past I fought the mayor to preserve the fireworks on the pier, (Do you remember the muddy field fireworks trials.) I asked for restoring parking in the lake shore restaurant area, assisting the downtown which involved a service to bring people to the downtown from Jarvis bay camp ground, and ensuring the lake accesses remained open. If adopted my firetruck plan may save taxpayers 1.5 million. I do not profit from whatever truck is purchased. 1-866-firetrucks . I presented an intelligent option. I am also very concerned as to the 17 million other dollars on the wish list that will fall on taxpayers shoulders and the fundamental business flaws that seem to continue to be used. I cannot support the continuation of the lakeshore experiment. Plastic sidewalks that cant be maintained in winter, million dollar washrooms, that require 24 hour a day security, and a town hall that reflects an overgrown ego and makes no business sense. White elephant mentality. All the zoning plans of bistro and expensive apartments have yielded a toothless lake shore business district, where people are demolishing buildings to reduce the tax rate. Better an empty lot than an empty business mentality. That's Reality. Not negative rants. I know businesses that are looking for alternate sites outside of the Sylvan Lake tax base. We are facing a cherry donut scenario, in which a municipality has all of the infrastructures and costs but the users are out side of the tax-base, with no methods of collecting revenue. The information coming from the town does not seem correct and only seems to be corrected when a total confrontation to expose the truth is used. Demolish a light house then start a light house fund raiser. Blame a crumbling foundation when the lighthouse sat on steel piling, but it blocked the view. I have lost the pleasure and easy access of the lake, its been repackaged, fenced, and sold back to me under new conditions and it will get much worse without a corrected direction of thinking. Past behavior reflects the future. I have shared my home with the bank for the last 15yrs and simple economics of taxation to support councils dreams tell me that the taxes will increase and that my homes value could decrease . When you double the debt-you have to double the payments or possibly triple in this case. If the debt is allowed as proposed that will mean every residence would have a municipal obligation that must be paid through taxes. For many people that's too much. Yes they will pay 1.5 million for a truck and another 17 million for the other dreams but reality could see that same truck on ebay. We will soon be locked in for the next 4 years and we have seen how well council listens to you after the doors are closed. The town has gone from $6.8 million cash 6 yrs ago, to a reported $22 million debt to possibly $39 million debt if all the proposed plans are done. Look for truth. This is my unpaid viewpoint. o yeah- 6 yrs later the improperly built speed bumps on lake shore drive remain. Even though they could have been fixed for free because of a contractor error.. program once they finish high school and are accepted into the U of A. The letters prevent other CIS coaches from recruiting the athletes. The story by Matt Gutsch, stated since taking over the program in January, Morris has worked relentlessly at acquiring the best building blocks to resurrect a program that hasn’t won

a conference championship in 30 years. The first wave of blue chip recruits included two starting members from Team Canada, eight starting members from Team Alberta, and they represent the best high school programs in the province. “This group of young men is the prototypical Alberta Golden

Bears football recruits of the future,” said Morris. “All of these young men have displayed excellence both in the classroom and on the field; they are all relentless competitors who will do whatever it takes to reach their full potential both on and off the field. We are proud to welcome them to the Golden Bear’s family.”

Lions donned orange to support opposition player by Talitha Watkinson Special to Sylvan Lake News

Members of Sylvan Lake Lions showed their support for an opposing player and his teams stand against bullying during their visit to McMahon Stadium on the weekend. When invited by the Innisfail Cyclones to wear orange in recognition of a terrible event in their community that affected one of their players they wholeheartedly participated. Talitha Watkinson, president of Innisfail Minor Football Association wrote this about the event and the Lions. “Early on in the season, right before the first game, one of the Cyclones’ players was attacked by a gang of seven youths, beaten severely and left with a terrible head wound. He was also unable to play what would have been his first football game ever. Aiden is 14 and was just introduced to football this summer by members of the football team.

“One bright spot however, is that Aiden’s team has rallied behind him. After practise, one of the peewee players asked if both teams could show Aiden some support and stand up against bullying. We decided to go with Aiden’s favourite color, which is orange. “We invited the visiting team to participate as well, and Sylvan Lake Lions stepped up in a way we never expected. All 32 Sylvan players donned an orange strip on their helmets, Sylvan coaches and trainers wore orange arm bands on the field, and their parents and spectators showed up with orange arm bands, scarves, and of course the orange ribbons. “What happened that day in August shook this entire community. We were left feeling shocked, bewildered, helpless and scared. But we are not helpless. We all have the power to stand up and be a voice. Silence is no longer an acceptable response to bullying.”

A lack of committed and quality players has forced Sylvan Lake Admirals Senior Men’s AAA hockey team to cease operations for the 2013-14 Chinook Hockey League season. Ted Stephens, president of the club, said in a notice last Thursday, “many things are involved but a lack of committed, quality players who would be there for the season was one of the main reasons”. “We thank players, sponsors, fans and the media for their support over the years,” he said. Stephens added they’re taking a year off and will be assessing the situation for next season. The Admirals have been playing in Sylvan Lake since the 2010-11 season.

Injuries, mistakes cost Lakers their season opener by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

After two weeks of training and an exhibition game at Ponoka, the H. J. Cody Lakers football squad started their season last Thursday in Wetaskiwin against the Sabres. “We could have won that game. We made too many mistakes at key points,” said head coach Jeremy Braitenback. The Lakers lost 28-27. “Being the first game of the year, it was a good one to learn from and not make those mistakes again,” he added. “Injuries hurt us, we had the lead and couldn’t hold it.” TJ Sloboda didn’t play in the game and

Shon Zenert and Tyler Williamson were injured during the game. Josh Barrie and Trent Kondor were leaders in the game and Brayden Marchesi did very well, Braitenback said. Dylan

Keller stood out as a rookie. Overall, Braitenback is pleased with this year’s team. “They are great guys to work with, co-operative and hard working. Those are the right ingredients for

success.” The team’s first home game goes this afternoon (Thursday) at 4:30 p.m. at the Cody field against Hunting Hills Lightning.
