Heliport upgrades begin at hospital East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s heliport is receiving approximately $450,000 in Interior Health funded upgrades to maintain an important transport link for patients of the region.
The hospital upgrades will increase the heliport size and elevate it to accommodate new Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) helicopters. “Interior Health relies on STARS helicopters
to provide life-saving transport to critically ill or injured patients who need a higher level of care,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. “These upgrades will ensure that East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s heliport is equipped to accommodate the new, larger helicopters STARS will be using starting next year.”
In early 2014, STARS will move to new, larger AW 139 helicopters. These new helicopters will allow STARS to do transports across greater distances without refueling. Upgrades will ensure it meets Transport Canada standards for these larger helicopters. “Interior Health is committed to getting patients the care they
need in the right location as quickly as possible,” said IH Board Chair Norman Embree. “With our large geographic area, it is important for Interior Health to have different transport options available in the East Kootenay. STARS transfers, in addition to fixed wing and groundbased transport services through our High Acuity
Response Team and BC Ambulance Services, support the network of services we provide.” Last month, Kelownabased Delnor Construction was awarded the contract for the heliport project through a public tender process. Construction began September 9 and is expected to last six to eight weeks. Work includes
expanding the current diametre of the heliport by approximately seven metres (from 19 metres to 26 metres) and raising it by about one metre. During construction, air transfers will continue to take place from the Cranbrook Airport. Construction will not impact patient/visitor access to East Kootenay Regional Hospital or its services.

As each public library polling station reported, the results changed in this hard fought, 3-way race. The 5th annual One Book One Kootenay (OBOK) was not selected until the last library was heard from. It was almost as suspenseful as this year’s selection, Confined Space by Deryn Collier (Simon & Schuster, 2012). “OBOK is a wonderful way to support local writers and the exposure throughout the region for Confined Space has been fantastic,” remarked Collier when she heard her book was voted as the one people in the region should read. “I really hope the program continues.” OBOK is a regional book club, supported by the Kootenay Library Federation, the

People are not only reading books by Kootenay authors; they are enjoying them and telling their friends about them. Confined Space is a perfect example of a locally written mystery with universal appeal. The characters feel real, the plot is believable and you don’t have to live in the Kootenays to picture Kootenay Landing. Once you have read it you will want to hear what Collier has to say about her book. What inspired her? Where did she learn the technical details? How did a first time author, from Nelson, get a large, wellestablished publisher to take her on?

Cod Gone Wild is a Modern Celtic band, based out of the Okanagan Valley of beautiful British Columbia, Canada. The “Cods” have melded veteran musicians from diverse musical backgrounds such as folk, rock, jazz, and funk, to create a unique modern Celtic sound with driving rhythms and tight vocal harmonies. Cod Gone Wild was born when Newfoundlander and lead singer/ guitarist Andrew Mercer made the move to British Columbia in 2009. With him, he brought a passion for traditional Irish/Newfoundland music and a vision to create something unique in British Columbia and Canada, while promoting the culture, heritage, and music that he has grown up listening to and performing since he was five. With the musical team of Anjuli Otter

(fiddle, vocals), Chad “Rhino” Carter (Drums, Vocals), and Roy Kawano (Bass) the vision has become a reality and has evolved into something very unique. The band released their first studio album in January 2011, which has been receiving regular airplay on the East Coast of Canada, Celtic Radio stations around the world, and on CBC, since its debut. Cod Gone Wild has been extremely busy touring, including a very successful month long tour of Newfoundland in August 2011. After returning from Newfoundland, the band, inspired by the trip to the east coast, started pre-production on “the Traveler.” Since the release of the Traveler, The Cods have been touring and promoting the new album in western Canada with great success. They have recently been named the “Best of the Okanagan

Award Winners” (2012) by the readers of Okanagan Life Magazine and are quickly becoming well known across the country for their amazing high energy performances, non-traditional arrangements and tight vocal harmonies. This three stop mini tour of the Kootenay’s will mark the band’s first visit to the region. “We are very excited to come to the Kootenay region and share our music with everyone there,” said lead singer Andrew Mercer. “Audiences can expect a very high energy show that will have people clapping and moving about (sometimes uncontrollably) in their seats! We like to have fun on stage and get the audience into the music and the performance.” The Kimberley show will take place on Sunday, September 29th at Centre 64 located at 64 Deer Park Avenue. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will start at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Centre 64 (250-427-4919). Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

Kootenay Rovers U-10 soccer team win gold in Pend Oreille Cup by John Beaulac
We win gold! This past weekend the Kootenay Rovers U-10 Boys soccer team traveled to Sandpoint, Idaho to participate in the Pend Oreille Cup youth
soccer tournament. The boys played against some strong American competition, but were more than up for the challenge - winning the Gold medal. Their first game was a 3-3 draw versus the
CDA Sting, a team from Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. In their second match they defeated The Spokane Pumas FC by a score of 4-0. In their early Sunday game they met the Flathead Rapids, a team
from Whitefish, Montana. The Rovers won this match by a score of 3-1. This win advanced the boys to the tournament final, where they would meet another Spokane, Washington team - the Spokane

Breakers. The Breakers had dominated their pool by winning all three of their games by a combined score of 19-2, however, our boys were not fazed by their success. The Rovers jumped out to an early lead that they never relinquished, winning the game by a score of 4-2. This was the first full year that the boys have played together as a traveling team representing Cranbrook. Coach Wade Schlatter has spent countless hours of his time working with them in the gym over the winter and out on the fields in the spring and summer. With help from Assistant Coach Peter Herrmann, the boys quickly came together as a team. The improvement in their skills and knowledge of the game was guite amazing. Team Manager Shauna Beaulac also contributed a great deal of her time and organizing skills to help make it all come together. In their two previous tournaments the boys had come close, losing 2-1 in the final in Kalispell, Montana and a 1-0 loss in double overtime in Moscow, Idaho. The Gold Medal win in Sandpoint was a great way for the boys to end off a very successful first season together.

Give Yourself a Spring Surprise
Who doesn’t love nice surprises? A bouquet of flowers from your spouse? A colourful drawing from the kids? A box of donuts to share from a thoughtful co-worker? Surprises are wonderful and that is no different in the garden. That is why bulbs are such a great thing to plant. In the fall, you pick your favourites, plant the self-contained little units and then you can forget about them for the winter months - until you get a bright reminder early in the spring. Bulbs come closer to guaranteeing success than any other type of garden plant. All the nutrients these flowers need are already stored in the bulb. They set roots in the fall to get themselves through a long winter and ready to grow in the spring, with the crocus, daffodil, tulip or other spring-bloomers ready to blossom. Planted with a bit of care, bulbs will provide you with a beautiful, lush and low-maintenance springtime garden. When I say “planted with a bit of care”, the key is put the bulbs in the ground at the depth and spacing indicated on the package. Adding a bit of bone meal or special bulb food into the hole before planting will give the bulbs an extra boost for root. Plant your bulbs with the roots down and pointed end up, fill the hole up with soil and firm it down. Timing is not too crucial for planting bulbs; as long as the ground is not frozen yet, you can get them going. And even after, you can get away with a lot. I remember planting bulbs with my family one year - out in the yard with a crowbar, chiselling holes into the semi-frozen soil. We randomly dropped bulbs with numb fingers and then covered them with soil and peat moss, hoping for the best. In the spring, the plants did not disappoint, giving us a spectacular show. Success with bulbs begins with choosing the best quality. Bulbs should be firm and free from deep blemishes, cuts or soft spots. They should feel plump and heavy for their size. A good rule of thumb is that the larger the bulb, the larger the bloom. It is best to plant bulbs as soon as conditions allow. If your planting is delayed, store bulbs in a cool place, such as a cool basement, store room or even the refrigerator. They need to breath, so never store them in plastic bags or they may rot. The crocus is one of the first bulbs sending its green shoots out of the ground. These cheerful companions come in many different colours, from pure white to purple and yellow. New this year is the crocus ‘Orange Monarch’. Its flowers are a vibrant burnt orange with maroon feathering on the outside petals – a truly unique colour punch in any spring-blooming bed. Narcissus, also known as daffodils, are another early-blooming spring bulb favourite. While they are popular with gardeners, they are not a big hit with four-legged garden visitors. Other bulbs deer will be more likely to ignore are snowdrops, muscari, hyacinth and flowers from the allium family. Tulips are probably the most recognized springtime bloomers. Each year, dozens of new varieties are developed and this season, the tulip “Irene Parrot” is making its grand entrance into Canadian gardens. Parrot tulips are stunning with their fringed edges, giving them their “feathered” look. The petals open in a vibrant orange with flames of purple throughout. Hyacinths will bring showstopping colour as well as a glorious fragrance to your spring yard. The hyacinth ‘Gipsy Queen’ compliments the other bloomers in the trend colour orange. The low growing, spiky florets are covered in dozens of salmon coloured blooms with apricot and rose accents. Whatever your colour scheme may be, there are spring bloomers that will fit right in and become permanent residents in your garden, spreading, multiplying and getting more vibrant year after year. Till next week, happy gardening Submitted by Kerstin

TELUS sponsors local children with backpacks filled with supplies Submitted
Just in time for the new school year, 420 local students will receive a backpack full of school supplies to help them start the school year off right, courtesy of TELUS Community Ambassadors throughout the East Kootenays. Each year, TELUS Community Ambassadors fill backpacks with essential school supplies for each grade: pencils, notebooks, loose-leaf sheets, pencil cases, rulers and much more. The Kits for Kids program is part of the annual TELUS Day of Giving – a special day in May when TELUS team members and retirees across Canada volunteer thousands of hours of community service to help build healthy, sustainable communities. “Going back to school with all the basics you need is essential for success, but they can be expensive for a family working hard to make ends meet. For some, it is a choice between food on the table or pens and paper for school,” said Edith LeClair, president of the TELUS Community Ambassadors of the East Kootenays. “We want to make sure no family has to make that choice, and that all students have the tools they need to succeed at school. All children deserve an opportunity to succeed, learn and grow.” Since 2006, TELUS Community Ambassadors have donated more than 70,000 Kits for Kids that school districts distribute to help young people start the school year with the supplies they need to flourish. About TELUS Community Ambassadors TELUS Community Ambassadors are passionate about volunteering in the communities where they live, work and serve. More than 3,000 current, former and retired TELUS team members volunteer at community events and support dozens of TELUSsponsored programs and initiatives in 23 clubs in communities across B.C., Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada. Last year, TELUS Community Ambassadors created and distributed close to 67,000 care items for Canadians in need worth a total of
$910,000. Their accomplishments include distributing nearly 9,660 Kits for Kids school bags, 11,751 comfort kits to families in crisis and homeless people, as well as sewing 3,860
