TERRACE - Natural gas minister Rich Coleman says he’s approaching the promise of liquefied natural gas (LNG) development in BC with the same optimism that saw him through to a BC Liberal win when others had written off the party during the May provincial election. “I really do think there’s at least three or four, maybe five [LNG plants] that are really dead serious and they are looking at this long term,” Coleman said after making a speech Sept. 5 to nearly 90 people at a Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce luncheon. “There’s three others that if they can find the land base they

want they will come through.” Three LNG proposals have surfaced in Kitimat and two in Prince Rupert. Two of the Kitimat ones have received environmental approval but no project has revealed any signed up customers. But it may not be until the middle of next year and even early in 2015 before northwest businesses hear if energy companies make final investment decisions to proceed with approved projects, said Coleman. “Our message must be that we support that industry,” Coleman told the luncheon attendees at the Bavarian Inn, calling it a “generational opportunity.” “I’ve never seen a better leader to have on a file like this,” he added of premier Christy Clark,

PRINCE RUPERT - As demand from Asian markets grows, Prince Rupert’s importance to the country cannot be understated. Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification Michelle Rempel pressed home the point during a visit to the North Coast on Sept. 4. “Prince Rupert really is at the nexus of the next wave of economic growth for western Canada ... Prince Rupert is a vital economic link for the country,” she said. “The success story is Prince Rupert. In 2007, the container terminal was launched and in just a few short years it has seen a huge increase in trade traffic ... if you look at that traffic alone, it is a case study to show the impact of trade across western Canada.” But with the increase in trade, there is a need for skilled workers. It’s a subject that provincial leaders have touched upon during visits to Prince Rupert, and Rempel said it is something the federal government is dedicated to addressing as well. “It is one of, if not the,

Talking to the port authority, they talked about training opportunities for people who live here and we want to make sure people can get training in the communities where they live,” she said. “These are questions we’ll look at, but it is something that flows right down to the province and the training institutions as well ... how can we innovate so no matter where people live, they have access to that skills training.” Rempel was in Prince Rupert as part of a tour that had her visit Saskatoon the day before and fly from Prince Rupert to Kelowna. During her time on the North

Coast, Rempel met with the Prince Rupert Port Authority and First Nations in the region, and said what she hears will be taken back to the federal government. “The government will be putting forward a throne speech in the fall, and the feedback I get from this tour will help me as a Member of Parliament and a member of cabinet when it comes to putting forward policy,” she said. “My first priority in this portfolio is to assist western Canadian businesses find the matches and markets for their product and make sure there is an awareness of the depth and breadth of the personnel market.”

College and others provide environmental training SMITHERS - In a partnership made possible with funding from the BC Mining HR Task Force, Northwest Community College’s School of Exploration and Mining; School District 54; Imperial Metals Corporation; the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation; the Office of the Wet’suwet’en; and the Smithers Exploration Group, will offer a pilot delivery of the dual credit Environmental Monitor Assistant Program (EMAP) in Smithers starting this September. Built on recognized environmental best practices and input from the exploration, mining and natural resources industries, the EMAP program offers grade 11 and 12 students the opportunity to gain employable skills while also achieving credit towards their high school graduation requirements. This innovative approach to programming represents a shift in the realm of secondary education and is meeting the need for providing flexible, engaging and hands-on learning experiences for youth. “The EMAP program represents a fundamental shift in the education system”, said Michael McDiarmid, Assistant Superintendent, School District 54. “It offers seamless learning opportunities that are flexible and responsive that will benefit both our students and employers.” In addition to developing the technical skills needed for employment as environmental monitors, the 16 participants will also gain an understanding of careers in mining, knowledge of the exploration and mining sectors including mine reclamation, job search skills and the importance of cultural resource management. The program will be instructed by professionals from the industry

Providing opportunities for youth to simultaneously work towards a secondary school diploma and college credentials is critical to meeting BC’s labour market challenge and also contributes to the Province’s comprehensive approach to education. “Expanding opportunities for students to begin apprenticeships before graduation and earn graduation credits that can also be applied to the completion of a trades or technical program is a goal identified in BC’s Skills Training Plan” said Gordon Armour, Chair of education initiatives with the BC Mining HR Task Force. “The Dual Credit EMAP pilot program directly contributes to this goal”. A skilled, job-ready and engaged workforce is something that the mining industry in BC greatly needs. Vice-President of Exploration with Imperial Metals Corporation, Patrick McAndless, speaks highly of NWCC’s initiative in delivering this pilot program. “Hiring requirements for all mining sectors in BC, over the next 10 years, are projected to be in the thousands of workers under a baseline scenario,” commented Mr. McAndless. “Imperial Metals Corporation recognizes the direct link between

ploration & Mining receiving several awards in recognition of its excellence in sustainability and partnerships. The current pilot delivery provides dual credit for secondary school students, geared toward increasing the

number of students in the K-12 sector earning graduation credit that is also applied to post-secondary training. The program will serve to shape future programs across the province by improving closer coordination be-

tween the K-12 sector, post-secondary institutions and industry. Northwest Community College and sectors of the mining industry have had longestablished connections in training people for mining work.

VANCOUVER - Construction union leaders emerged from a meeting with Premier Christy Clark Monday with a deal to work as “equal partners” on trades training for liquefied natural gas and other industrial development. B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair and Tom Sigurdson, executive director of the B.C. and Yukon Building and Construction Trades Council, said they want

to put political differences with the B.C. Liberal government behind them. “During the course of the election campaign, Christy Clark was the only leader who wore a hardhat,” Sigurdson told reporters after a meeting at Clark’s Vancouver office. “And I can assure you that what I’m trying to do is put a couple of union stickers on there.” Sinclair, more familiar with speaking at protest rallies against the government, said skills training is in a “crisis”

that needs cooperation. “It’s obvious the LNG is a critical part of our future,” Sinclair said. “It’s not the only part where skill shortages exist. The mining industry, the forest industry, the other energy industries, and many other places require skilled trades.” Clark said a committee representing government, employers and unions has a target of Sept. 30 to formalize a plan for increased trades training. Skills training was a major focus of the

KITIMAT - A proposed plan by the Kitimat LNG project to dump marine clay from the project site into nearby Clio Bay has stirred the ire of at least one local, and the concern of Kitimat Council. Rick Flegel, longtime resident and boater on the Douglas Channel, asked for council’s support to stop the proposed dumping plan. The plan is called the Clio Bay Restoration Project, and according to Chevron (a proponent behind Kitimat LNG, as well as Apache) it will cover the numerous submerged logs in the bay, and will restore it to natural health. But not everyone agrees Clio Bay needs restoration. “I just can’t believe that somebody would just go and dump mud into the bay,” said Flegel, adding, I think of Clio Bay as an aquarium. It’s there, it’s got habitat amongst the branches and what have you, and that’s all going to be covered.” Flegel, who has lived in Kitimat since the 1950s, said he fishes, crabs, and takes family to Clio Bay, and notes it’s a safe haven during high winds on the water. The Clio Bay project would likely require the bay to be closed to the public at certain times, the company told the Sentinel. Councillor Phil Germuth also provided a verbal report at the same meet-

As the proprietor of a U- Brew, I earn my living making wine and beer for my clients. I totally understand the MMMM experience. You know, the one where after the first bite or sip there is a subtle MMMM coming from the person consuming the food or drink that you have made yourself. It says everything you as the maker want to hear. The ensuing words “that’s good” are just icing on the cake. Let’s make some wine that will get the MMMM approval. As with everything, there is a beginning and an end to the process. So we will start at the beginning by listing the set of tools needed to make wine. You will need only one of each tool listed. You may already have a set or part set of tools in your kitchen or workshop. If not, tool kits are readily available.

TOOL LIST! The first essential is an open fermentation bucket with a locking not a sealing lid. This can be any food grade, rated for alcohol plastic vessel. The alcohol rating is the liner number embossed with the arrow on the bottom. You are looking for #1 or #4 only. The arrow points to one of those numbers. Once you have a suitable bucket, you will need: • Long handled plastic or stainless steel spoon. • Triple scale hydrometer. • Hydrometer jar or hydrometer test tube. • Wine thief. • Floating thermometer. • Racking cane with a sediment tip. • Hose sized to fit the racking cane and two meters long. • Shut off clip for the hose. • Carboy that will hold twenty-three litres of liquid. This can be either plastic or glass. • Rubber bung with a hole that will fit and seal the carboy neck. • Air lock. • A muslin bag sometimes referred to a hop bag is convenient when making fruit wines. This set of tools will make wine or beer. There are a few things needed to bottle, but they can be put together after fermentation is complete. Next column: how to use your tools. NEW HAZELTON - New Hazelton RCMP responded to a total of 78 calls during the period of Aug. 29 to Sept. 4. On Sept. 3 during a vehicle stop in Gitsegukla, the driver displayed signs of impairment. The driver failed the roadside screening device and was investigated for impaired driving. And beware of unsolicited calls where the caller claims that you have won a vacation. The caller then pressures victims to provide credit card information in order to book immediately and pay the taxes. Victims are losing, on average, in excess of $900.

PRINCE RUPERT - A poll released by the Coastal First Nations (CFN) shows an overwhelming number of British Columbians agree with banning bear hunting on the North Coast. The poll, conducted by McAllister Opinion Research for CFN, asked 805 B.C. residents for their views on â&#x20AC;&#x153;trophy hunting for bears in the Great Bear Rainforestâ&#x20AC;?. Of those polled, 87 per cent agree with banning the hunt and 78 per cent said they â&#x20AC;&#x153;stronglyâ&#x20AC;? agree with the ban. The members of the CFN â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which include the Gitgaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;at, Metlakatla, Old Massett, Skidegate and the Council of the Haida Nation â&#x20AC;&#x201D; formally banned bear hunting in their territory last September, but the hunt is still permitted by the B.C. Government through limited entry licences. Those who hunt bears will generally take the head, paws and possibly fur, but leave the meat where the bear is shot. The poll further shows those who identified themselves as hunters disagreed with the practice. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The attitudes of hunters included in the sample are especially interesting. 91 per cent agree that their fellow hunters should respect First Nations laws and customs when on First Nation territory and 95 per cent of hunters agree that people should not be hunting if they are not prepared to eat what they kill,â&#x20AC;? said McAllister Opinion Research president Angus McAllister. The subject is one the CFN members are passionate about, and they say they will use whatever non-violent means available to stop bears from being shot. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If I have to stand between feeding bears and people with guns, I will,â&#x20AC;? said Kitasoo councillor and guide Doug Neasloss. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This so-called sport is a violation of First Nations laws and customs and this poll shows people across the province share these values. Trophy hunting for bears is wasteful,â&#x20AC;? said Heiltsuk Coastwatch director William Housty. The issue of bear hunting garnered more national attention last week when it was shown Minnesota Wild player Clayton Stoner had shot a bear this spring and was photographed with the animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s severed head and paws. However, Stoner noted everything done was done legally. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I applied for and received a grizzly bear hunting licence through a British Columbia limited entry lottery last winter and shot a grizzly bear with my licence while hunting with my father, uncle and a friend in May,â&#x20AC;? he said in a statement released by the team.

Skeena NDP MLA off to northeast learn the gas business TERRACE - Skeena NDP MLA Robin Austin is on his way to northeastern BC later this month for a firsthand look at that region’s oil and gas industry. Named his party’s natural gas critic following the spring provincial election, Austin said he needs a better understanding of what’s at stake for the province’s potential liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry and its impact on the northwest. “I’m particularly interested in fracking,” said Austin of the use of large amounts of water and chemicals pumped underground to free up natural gas once considered unreachable. It’s this technique, officially called hydraulic fracturing, which has resulted in massive amounts of recoverable natural gas leading to the possibility of a lucrative LNG industry in BC. Austin said he’s looking forward to meeting with industry and other officials as well as farmers concerned with water use. The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, an industry group representing energy companies, is setting up site visits for Austin. And he’s also going to be toured around by Mike Bernier, a former mayor of Dawson Creek, retired Pacific Northern Gas official and newly-elected Liberal MLA for the Peace River South riding. Austin said he appreciates Bernier’s touring offer, saying it represents “cross-party assistance.” “We’re going to need more than partisan politics,” said Austin of the complex issues surrounding the development of an LNG industry. Topping the issues list is the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the Kitimat area that can be expected by the anticipated construction of at least one small LNG plant and two larger ones. The emissions will come from companies burning their own natural gas to provide the power to freeze or liquefy natural gas bound for Asian markets. “How will the government deal with these emissions?” asks Austin. What’s need is a study to determine what the Kitimat airshed area can absorb, he said.

Austin’s also waiting for the province to come up with its longawaited taxation regime, the heart of the government’s plan to create its Prosperity Fund. “[Natural gas minister] Rich Coleman

tells us it’s in the works. Don’t forget the government has also promised a community development fund, a regional resource fund – it was in the [Liberal election] platform. The government’s has a lot of balls

in the air it’s juggling.” Energy companies have said they need to know sooner rather than later what kind of tax the province is contemplating as only then can they factor it into their investment deci-

sions. One large financial unknown, Austin continued, is the eventual sales price of LNG. Asian customers no longer want to pay a rate that’s tied to the price of oil – LNG prices in Asia

have been four times the rate of what it sells for in North America. Going with Austin is the NDP environment critic, Spencer Chandra Herbert. Austin, who was reelected in the May pro-

vincial election to a third term in the legislative assembly had previously been his party’s critic for kindergarten to Grade 12 education. The northeast tour will take approximately one week.

Students at Charles Hays Secondary School have started a greenhouse project, planting strawberries that will eventually be put in the greenhouse when it arrives. As well, the millwright program at CHSS is up and running, and Jones said it’s

working well. “We have many community partners who participated in getting that up and running. It’s a fantastic project,” she said. Parents can keep up with the happenings of their children’s schools by attending upcoming parents’ nights.

PRINCE RUPERT The first week back to school was smooth sailing in the Prince Rupert School District. “It was a smooth week by all accounts. There was lots of great commentary from principals about the kids and staff,” Sandy Jones, School District 52’s new superintendent, said. “The strongest message I got from elementary schools was that it was smooth, and the kids are happy to be in school. I’m hoping that continues,” she said. Jones said she learned it’s very busy for the superintendent during the first week of class. “It was exciting ... to make sure everything was running well and managed. And it was. We have great staff; great principals and teachers.” Jones said there are a number of new teachers joining the district this year, as well as oncall teachers. “It’s great to have new blood in the system,” she said. While it is too early to tell, Jones predicts student enrolment numbers are slightly up, and said there’s a lot for students to be excited for. The Vancouver Aquarium AquaVan will be making a visit to PRMS and some of the elementary schools

in the district in the near future. “People are very excited about that,” Jones said. Volleyball teams around the district are also starting up, and many Prince Rupert students will be participating in the Terry Fox Run later this month.

TERRACE - City council’s pancake breakfast held at the George Little Park Riverboat Days Sunday morning Aug. 4 proved a big hit with 270 servings provided. The event was made possible thanks to the Salvation Army’s mobile kitchen, Save On Foods, Northwest Community College and local egg producer Daybreak Farms. The event raised $1,030 or $515 each for the Terrace Churches Food Bank and the Salvation Army Food Bank. MINE MOBILE EQUIPMENT TRAINER

Reporting to the Mine Operations Superintendent, the Mine Mobile Equipment Trainer will be responsible for the training, follow-up and record keeping for mining equipment operators. The focus will be Operational Excellence, ensuring the skills of the workforce meet and exceed the industry and manufacturer best practice. Building and maintaining productive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders will be required and critical to the success of this role. PRINCE RUPERT - The Vancouver Canucks stopped in Prince Rupert for a brief visit this past Saturday, Sept. 7. The team’s veterans – including Roberto Luongo, Ryan Kesler, the Sedin twins, new coach John Tortorella and owner Francesco Aquillini – were en route to an exclusive fishing lodge on Haida Gwaii. The trip is a team building exercise prior to the on-set of training camp. While Roberto Luongo may be back with the team reluctantly one thing is clear - he is still the fan favourite. Luongo was the most in-demand Canuck of the day, signing autographs well after the other players had headed to the team bus from the arena where more than a 1,000 fans had gathered. The team bus just happened to be parked beside where the Zamboni dumps its snow. It may have been one of the hottest days of the year in Prince Rupert, but when Luongo finally emerged he was greeted with a flurry of snowballs from his teammates. The official visit was a precious but all too brief meet-andgreet that allowed the team to connect with the local kids and First Nations communities – two of the most hardcore groups of fans in this hockey mad province. Though it went by far too quickly, the community was alive with energy. It is truly amazing just how much of an impact the team can have on communities across the province.

Dan Hamhuis grew up four hours down the road in Smithers, B.C. “Yeah, I grew up playing hockey all around the Northwest Smithers, Houston, Hazelton, Terrace, Kitimat, Rupert, as far away as Fort St. James. It brings back some memories, that’s for sure,” he said. Hamhuis is the team’s de facto tour guide for this trip. “I told the guys to expect some pretty rambunctious fans up here, and they certainly have lived up to the billing,” he said. “It is great to get out across the province,” said team captain Henrik Sedin. “People always think of the Canucks as Vancouver’s team, but there are some amazing fans across all of BC.” Laurence Gilman, the Canucks assistant general manager, said that the team has never done this before in his five years with the organization, but he hopes to see it again. “We are always looking for team building ideas and this allows us to get out to see many of the fans who otherwise never get a chance to see their heroes,” he said. “It also is really humbling to see the fan response and interaction. The whole organization is reminded of the opportunities and responsibilities we have with our fans.” In hockey terms Prince Rupert is most definitely a 4th line plugger - proud and undeterred, still fighting and hoping for glory. The town has always dreamed big, but never quite made it. Yet the weather beaten residents (if you think it rains a lot in Vancouver, you should try spending time in Rupert) keep at it.

Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii may not be your typical hockey towns. But they are Canucks towns. They gather around the TV (or maybe the radio on the many fish-

ing boats, in this case) and follow the ups and downs of their favorite team, just like people in the Okanagan or the Lower Mainland. They are very different types of Canucks towns, but on this weekend Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii prove that the famous slogan really is true: We are all Canucks. TERRACE - The light is red for northern racers until next season. The Terrace Drag Race Association held the final event of the 2013 season, the Season Ender, in Terrace over the Labour Day long weekend to determine the winners of the association’s yearly points series. The Season Ender kicked off on Saturday, with racers competing to earn the final points of 2013. The event wrapped up the points series, with Prince Rupert’s Ed Evans taking the top spot in the Pro Class. Evans won the Pro Class race at Hot August Nites, and placed second at the season’s opener this season, maintaining the points series lead following Hot August Nites. Evans said the win felt good considering he won his first race in the Sportsman Class last year, before they merged two classes together into the faster-Pro Class. “I figured I wouldn’t have a chance. Winning one race and coming in second for another is really spectacular. I feel great,” Evans, who drove his ‘81 Camaro,

said. In the Super Pro Class, Kitimat’s Bruce Daum placed first, followed by Kris Barnett from Terrace. Harley Bell from Kitimat took the bronze spot. Kitimat’s Randy Baker raced his way to first place in the Pro Class, with Terrace’s Doug Mcphadyen taking the second place spot, and Terrace’s Bill Boutilier placing third. In the Junior Dragster Class, Quinn Amado from Kitimat won the final points race of the season, followed by Kitimat’s Tanner Daum, and Terrace’s Massimo Dalla Vecchia. Kitimat racer Bruce Daum earned the most points in the Super Pro Class over the season, with his son Tanner Daum winning the most points in the Junior Dragster category. On the Sunday of the Season Ender, the King and Gambler races took place with no Prince Rupert racers placing in the races. Terrace’s Larry Craig won the King of the YXT, with Kitimat’s Tanner Daum winning the junior category. Terrace’s Steve Burkett won the Gambler race.

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Snowmobile and Hiker’s Club is seeking community support to fix up the trails on Robinson Ridge. “We’re currently working on a project that we’re calling the Robinson Ridge Recreation Area Improvement Project,” said club president Chad Fournier. They’re looking towards gaming grants to do trail improvement and alignment, and improve general accessibility. He said the ultimate goal is to replace the Robinson Ridge cabin, which is, technically, classified as an emergency shelter and warming hut. He sought and received a letter of support from Council, to include in their funding applications for the Community Gaming Grant. If they successfully receive the Gaming Grant that will earn them $35,000. Meanwhile the club is also seeking $15,000 through other grants to install a BC Parks approved back country toilet on Robinson Ridge. Fournier told the Sentinel that in a very pre-

liminary budget, the whole work on Robinson Ridge is expected to total $130,000, but that’s not taking into account things like in-kind labour. But if the group successfully brings in all of the grants they’re applying for, they’ll get $50,000 of the project paid for. The work planned for Robinson Ridge complements the years-long project that has been ongoing on Clague Mountain. On Clague, they’ve been doing trail work, recently opened a new cabin, and this past weekend installed a brand new outhouse. They are also installing new cedar boardwalks to either extend the trails or replace existing boardwalks which are falling apart. For Clague and Robinson Ridge the work will also benefit the winter-time maintenance of the trails. The club is waiting for eventual approvals for the applied-for grants before seeking out further public assistance to make the plans a reality. “If we’re successful in getting either of the two grants, we’ll feel more confident that the project is something we can really get behind and others will give consideration to getting behind, either financially or otherwise,” he said.

Pro football is a quarterback’s game. If you’ve got a good one, you have a chance to win. If your QB is a household name only in his own home, chances are you’re not going to the playoffs. In the National Football League, QB is king. Running back Adrian Peterson of the Vikings may have won the most valuable player award last year, but ask a casual fan to name his 10 favourite NFL players and chances are good that nine of them will play quarterback. There are veteran quarterbacks who are unquestioned stars — Peyton Manning of the Broncos; Tom Brady of New England; Aaron Rodgers of Green Bay; Drew Brees of the Saints; and Peyton’s kid brother, Eli Manning of the Giants, who has two Super Bowl titles to his name. There are younger quarterbacks, many of whom were part of the

Sanctuary included in LNG pipe path By Shaun Thomas

PRINCE RUPERT Environmental groups are raising a red flag as one LNG pipeline proposal shows plans to run the line through the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary. One of the routes proposed by TransCanada Pipeline, the company tasked with creating the pipeline to Pacific NorthWest LNG’s terminal on Lelu Island, would cut through eastern portion of the sanctuary. The Valhalla Wilderness Society said survey work in the area is already underway, bringing helicopters and survey crews into the Khutzemeyteen to discover the feasibility of running a four-foot diameter pipeline with a 200-foot right-of-way and necessary access road for service and construction through the sanctuary. “The pipeline corridor will shatter the ecological integrity of the whole area, and is a threat to every grizzly bear for miles around ... this is a shocking and unconscionable betrayal of the bears, the Park Act, and the Great Bear Rainforest decision of 2006,” said bear biologist Wayne McCrory, who noted the work seems to be happening without a park use permit but “with the endorsement of the Premier’s office”. “How can they even allow survey crews in the protected area for a pipeline that would require a 200 foot wide right-of-way and a major industrial road, as well as a compressor station and a large industrial staging area? They would have to put the pipeline 1.7 kilometres under the Khutzeymateen Fjord and through marine foreshore habitat vital to grizzly bears and world-class bear viewing. The whole purpose of the new conservancies was to protect the grizzly bears and adjacent marine habitats. Instead the government is allowing huge gas corporations to take a hammer to the protected areas.” The pipeline would also pass through the Kwinimass Conservancy to the north of the Khutzeymateen, and McCrory said that sets a dangerous precedent. “No protected area is sacred or safe anymore from our government’s wide open policies on rampant LNG develop-

ment and the race of gas companies to get to the B.C. Coast,” he said. “Establishing a new utility corridor through these protected areas sets a bad precedent for all our parks, and opens the door for additional pipelines or transmission lines to be built along the new corridor. No pipelines should be allowed through these

conservancies ... allowing pipeline surveys in the conservancies means that the provincial government is no longer honouring the Park Act. Apparently the pipeline company does not even have permits yet, nor should they be granted any. This is crazy. They should just stay out of these protected areas.”

TransCanada Pipelines did not provide comment, but the company told The Globe and Mail no ground work has been done, though visual assessments by helicopter have. TransCanada said it has applied for permits to allow studies in the park and would not do work until those permits were approved.
