A 40-year-old man is missing after he jumped into the Kootenay River in Wardner to escape from police on Wednesday afternoon. Cranbrook RCMP’s drug task force found two men in possession of a large amount of cocaine on Wednesday,

September 11, next to the Fort Steele Wardner Road, close to Highway 3. The RCMP arrested one man, but the other ran away and jumped into the Kootenay River, according to an RCMP statement. “Additional officers were immediately dispatched from the Cran-

brook area, and Cranbrook and Kimberley Search and Rescue were activated and searched the river, assisted by the RCMP helicopter and a police service dog team,” said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk, media relations for the RCMP’s Southeast Division. The man, identified as 40-year-old Jason

Baker, has not been seen since and is considered a missing person. “The Cranbrook RCMP are actively looking for him, to ensure his safety, and are seeking a warrant for his arrest,” said Cpl. Moskaluk.

Keep industrial business inside the city, Council says S A LLY MACD ON AL D Townsman Staff

Cranbrook will officially object to plans to allow industrial businesses in the regional district surrounding the city. On Monday, September 9, city council decided it will not recommend approval of the Regional District of East Kootenay’s bylaws that would permit major home-based businesses in Area C around Cranbrook. The Regional District of East Kootenay has been preparing draft regulations for both major and minor homebased businesses in rural areas.

There will be two categories of home based business, depending on where the home is located. Minor home-based business — such as child care or a bed and breakfast — will be allowed throughout the region, but major home-based business — a portable sawmill, woodworking business, trade contracting and metal working — would only be permitted in parts of electoral areas A (around Sparwood) and C (around Cranbrook). In Area C, major home-based business would be approved on a site-by-site basis.

trees like spruce were planted by students from Mt. Baker High School including students from the Alternate School in June 2012 along the north bank of Joseph Creek in Spooner Park between the High School and Western Financial Place. With the cool damp conditions experienced last spring, the plants seemed to prosper but so did the grasses and invasive weeds. During the summer members of Joseph Creek Streamkeepers worked with a professional to clear the grasses and weeds, particularly burdock, in an effort to protect the guilds. Next Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept.17 and 18, Joseph Creek Streamkeepers plan to meet at Spooner Park to cover the grass surrounding the permaculture guilds with cardboard to prevent sunlight from getting to the grass. The cardboard will then be covered with mulch, which will have the combined effect of eliminating grasses and weeds, allowing the native plants to flourish. Interested members of the public are invited to join Joseph Creek Streamkeepers on Tuesday and Wednesday any time between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to lend a hand. After their capture, Charlie Ed and Tillie returned to work with the Sells-Floto Circus menagerie. Charlie Ed is second from left, Tillie is third from left.

The Great Elephant Hunt of 1926

After the elephant rescue

Eighty-seven years ago, three elephants escaped from a travelling circus in Cranbrook and roamed the hills. This four-part series retells the classic story. In part four, we learn what became of the Sells-Floto elephants S a lly Mac Don al d Townsman Staff

A

fter six weeks roaming the hills around Cranbrook in 1926, little circus elephant Charlie Ed has finally been caught and walked back into town on September 14, just in the nick of time before the first snow. He’s one of three elephants that got loose from the Sells-Floto Circus in August 1926. Tillie was captured nine days later; Myrtle died of pneumonia following a month in the bush. But little Charlie Ed is the happy ending Cranbrook was holding its breath for. And the growing city puts all

its pent-up nervousness into celebrating his safe return. On September 19, Charlie Ed will board a train with a $1,200 ticket to California, where he will meet up with the rest of the travelling circus. First, he gets a proper Cranbrook send-off. That Sunday morning, Charlie Ed is led through town to meet Cranbrook’s Mayor T.M. Roberts outside the Royal Bank. In honour of his six-week ordeal in the wild, Charlie Ed was to be given a new name – Cranbrook Ed – though it’s clear only Cranbrook knows him by this

name. To christen the elephant, Mayor Roberts pours a bottle of champagne over Charlie Ed’s head. The elephant takes it gracefully. Perhaps a little foolishly, the mayor then chooses this moment to present a bouquet of flowers to the lovely Marie Patterson, who has just won the Cranbrook Gyro Club auto contest. “The newly christened, apparently thinking that he could show His Worship how such presentations should be made, grabbed the flowers and making a pass with them to his mouth, as if to eat them, then waved

the bouquet on high, much to the surprise and delight of those present, then he dropped them at the feet of the honoured young lady,” wrote the Herald on September 23. Then Charlie Ed is treated to a tray of delicacies at the Victoria Cafe, before being packed off, trunk and all, on the noon train. While the story ends there for Cranbrook, it’s not the end of the trouble for the elephants of the Sells-Floto. In fact, like Myrtle, Charlie Ed, Tillie and even little Mary, who started the trouble, met with tragic ends at the hands of humans.

Cranbrook’s own Charlie Ed left the circus in 1934 for Hollywood, appearing in 1935 film “Clive of India‚“ alongside Loretta Young and Ronald Colman.

Two years later, the Sells-Floto is in Lewiston, Idaho during a heat wave. Desperately thirsty, Mary takes off. Confused by the shimmering reflection of the glass, Mary smashes shop windows as she runs through town. She finally stops at a garage where people had just been washing cars. She drinks and her handlers arrive and manage to calm her down. Unfortunately, Lewisham’s mayor Dr. Braddock, an avid big game hunter, has run for his gun. Without evaluating the scene in the garage, he shoots Mary dead. As for Tillie, she leads a long life (for a captive ele-

phant), passing from Sells-Floto to Ringling Brothers. But she dies in 1941 in Atlanta, Georgia, one of seven elephants poisoned with arsenic. No culprit is ever identified. And what of Cranbrook’s beloved Charlie Ed? Well, he is retired from the circus in 1934 when he is cast in the film “Clive Of India”, alongside Loretta Young. After his second brush with fame, Charlie Ed is retired to the San Francisco Zoo. Tragically, in 1936, he gores his keeper to death. Charlie Ed is killed by a firing squad, stiff ropes pulling his four legs apart. He is 27 years old.

City to examine effectiveness of tourist signage Tourists passing through Cranbrook may not know about attractions off the highway because of insufficient signage

Sally MacDonald

Cranbrook council hopes to draw more out-of-town visitors off the strip to discover what the city has to offer. On Sept. 9, city council decided to approach the B.C. Ministry of Transportation

and Infrastructure to conduct a study on the effectiveness of the tourist signage along Highway 3/95. The study was a recommendation by the city’s Highway 3/95 Revitalization Committee.

“What the committee would like to see is signs along Highway 3/95 directing people to some of the features we have off the highway,” said Mayor Wayne Stetski. “The feeling is that if you just drive through Cran-

brook right now ... all sorts of things are currently missed. The recommendation from the committee is that a study would mean the city sits down with the Ministry of Transportation and look at what could be done to better

feature the many attractions and opportunities we have in Cranbrook. “If you drive through Cranbrook and you have children, right now the only thing you can see that you can take them to is fast food

places. You would never know that within a block or two of Highway 3 there are some great playgrounds you can take your kids to and other amenities.” The study will take place next year.

Council opposed to RDEK’s major home based business regs Continued from page 1

Cranbrook council is in favour of the minor home based business regulations, but opposed to the major home based business regulations. Mayor Wayne Stetski, and Councillors Sharon Cross, Gerry Warner and Bob Whetham voted in favour of this stance, while Coun. Angus Davis was op-

posed. Coun. Denise Pallesen and Diana J. Scott were absent. “Generally speaking, I think it’s safe to say that most people are comfortable with the provisions for minor home-based businesses. They are entirely consistent with something that would be an accessory to a residential use,” said Coun.

Whetham, who sits on the regional district board with Mayor Wayne Stetski. “The issue is with the major home-based business, where in fact the residence is really the smaller use than the business. It’s difficult, at least in my mind, to see how that would be a benefit.” Coun. Whetham said he is concerned with allowing a business such

as woodworking, general contracting and metal working in a rural area, especially when the regulations would allow up to three non-resident employees, two commercial vehicles and three pieces of heavy equipment. “We are getting well beyond something that is incidental to the residential use,” he said. “The approach we

Who’s feeling lucky today?

o it’s Friday the 13th. Of 2013. Does that mean a double dose of bad luck? Or, does a double negative make a positive? Let us consider who should be feeling lucky this week and who should be hiding under their bed for the rest of the day. We’ll start with international politics. Feeling lucky — Vladimir Putin The situation in Syria is a mess. A civil war with no foreseeable outcome, unsavoury characters on both sides, and in the middle, a suffering civilian population. The crisis reached a head in recent days as we all know because a fairly strong case can be made that chemical weapons were used on the Syrian population. The Americans have been making a case — based on red lines and American morality — that military intervention is necessary. (We’ll get to the unlucky Obama in a minute.) But then at the last minute, Russia’s Putin comes riding to the rescue — ironically not on his iconic horse this time — with Syria’s agreement to pass control of its chemical weapons to the international community. It’s a lot more complicated than that, but that’s the gist of it. War appears to be avoided, and who gets to be the hero? The international statesman? None other than Putin. Go figure. Under the bed — Barack Obama

Obama, you’ve been Putined! While you are barnstorming the country, and the halls of Congress, looking for support for another American intervention in a mess that has no clear end — and incidentally reminding many people of your loathed predecessor George W. Bush — your Russian nemesis has wrangled a deal out of Syria’s Assad. Now it’s looking a lot more dicey to even talk of military action. It puts Obama Carolyn in a rather uncomfortable Grant position. My advice? Get under the bed, Obama. At least until Saturday, September 14. Moving to national affairs we have the new Quebec Charter and the federal government’s careful response. And unlucky are all the politicians of any stripe trying to make sense of this without offending someone. It’s not going to be easy. The Parti Quebecois putting forth a new Charter of Values for Quebec with an extremely controversial ruling on keeping the church separate from the state. It’s a noble goal. Religion doesn’t, or at least shouldn’t, have any role in government. The Charter places restrictions on the wearing of conspicuous religious symbols if you are in government employment. And, the hope expressed by the provincial government is that private business will follow. It actually sounds pretty good — until you read that the crucifix is an exception. The wearing of a small crucifix is permitted. Apparently

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

the Christian crucifix is “emblematic of Quebec’s cultural heritage.” Other religious symbols such as a turban, a star of David — not allowed. Yeah, that’s a mess. A big one. Under the bed with all of you. Don’t say a word about it until Saturday. And even then, be careful. Be real careful. Let’s take a look provincially. Feeling lucky — it still has to be Christy Clark. An unexpected, huge election win last May, an easy by-election win to secure her seat in the Legislature. She has now cancelled the fall sitting of the Legislature, so the NDP have no opportunity to challenge her government at all. She’s sitting pretty. Maybe sitting is the wrong word, as with the cancellation of the fall session, the Legislature sits for a total of 36 days this year. Under the bed — Adrian Dix He’s going to have to come out sometime. Apparently Dix will announce sometime next week whether he intends to continue as NDP leader after the spectacular implosion last May, when the NDP snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. I am going to predict that he steps down. I am also going to predict that most of his caucus colleagues are not going to be too broken up about it. In fact, my advice? Stay under the bed, Adrian Dix. What’s Up?

Letters to the Editor Gran Fondo

A huge thank you to the sponsors, organizers and communities for an excellent inaugural Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo experience last Sunday. Most places can put on an “event” but your unique location and community spirit allows for an event, in a “world class” setting with the full support of the hosting communities. The paved Rails to Trails portion, with the bridge over the river, is a tremendous asset to have in your area. The organization was impeccable and the aid stations, road crossing patrols, after-ride buffet, live music and swag bag were all “over the top”. It was great to see locals parked along the route offering encouragement to the riders. There was definitely some serious thought put into this event to facilitate three different ride lengths which all finished at the same starting point, thus eliminating the stressful logistics involved for the riders, volunteers and spectators when the start and finish are different geographical points. The “ultimate” was the downhill finish;

it made me feel like a kid again. The bar has been set and I’m looking forward to next year. Thanks again. Bill McKenzie Langley, BC

Gran Fondo

I would like to thank all those involved in putting on a well organized and executed Fondo event. The volunteers were very enthusiastic as well as the local people. I received encouraging honks from passing cars and even one car that rang cow bells – great stuff. I rode the Medio course on a fixed gear bike and the course was perfect for that – excellent rolling terrain. Thanks again. Mike Prance

Back to Church Sunday

As the summer holidays bring people home again, the kids are back to school. Our churches are also busy with back-tochurch invitations.

“Back to Church Sunday” began in the UK 10 years ago and has captured the imagination across the world by actively encouraging friends to invite friends to a place of belonging, a place that gathers people searching for something greater than themselves – searching for purpose. Cranbrook United Church joins this very good worldwide movement Sunday, September 15. Friends of Cranbrook United are encouraging their friends and families to find an inclusive place, a place that isn’t perfect but tries to follow faithfully in the steps of Jesus Christ. Back to Church Sunday invites you to connect with a faith community near you. Frank Lewis Cranbrook

Take one sabbath each week and rest

N

ews Item: Canadian full–time employees spend 50.2 hours in work– related activities each week, according to a study, “Revisiting Work–Life Issues in Canada: The 2012 National Study on Balancing Work and Caregiving in Canada.” The conclusions of the study show, among other things, that 1) stress in the workplace is increasing; 2) people are finding it more difficult to balance work and family life; 3) email is increasing stress levels both in the workplace and the home; 4) stress impacts life negatively in many ways, including increasing absenteeism due to reduced mental and physical health. These results won’t surprise us. Statistics clearly show that most people are working harder and longer than ever. So much for all those labour–saving devices which were supposed to make life easier and provide more leisure time. We are experiencing more stress in our lives, because we are having trouble managing the many competing demands on our time and energy. September is often the time we are busy gearing up for back to school, back to work, back to the rat race after a summer which (hopefully!) was more relaxed for many of us. So let me ask: have we forgotten the gift of a sabbath in our lives? The concept comes from the ten commandments in Exodus 20. Yes, it’s another one of those hoary religious concepts — but let’s think it through for a moment. In the story, the ten commandments (or more accurately, the ten words) were given to Israel as they escaped from slavery in Egypt. Now, imagine what a gift it would

be to tell slaves that they could take one whole day off every week to rest and be renewed. What incredible good news. After being required to work 24/7, now they were being given a day every week to reconnect with themselves, with their friends and families, with creation, and with God. How does that sound to you in the midst of the busyness of our lives? Wouldn’t that be a gift to us all in this society in which we can shop, work, Rev. Yme and chatter online 24/7? That’s exactly what Dr. Woensdregt David Posen, a stress specialist, recommends in his book, “Is Work Killing You? A Doctor’s Prescription for Treating Workplace Stress.” “My message about leisure and worklife balance is that they are not luxuries. They are necessities for good health, for good energy, for good productivity and, frankly, for stress relief.” He observes that “many employees are now expected, or take it upon themselves, to check emails on their days off and weekends.” But there’s a cost to always being ‘on.’ “It’s costly to health, energy; it’s also costly to relationships…” The human body needs recovery time between periods of high stress. The fight– or–flight response was intended to deal with short–term threats or dangers. But these days, “you’ve got people’s stress reaction turned on pretty well all the time, and cortisol flows through your body, and then all the effects of the stress reaction — your blood pressure goes up or stays up; your cholesterol goes up; it causes heart problems and compromises your immune system, and so on…”

Friday, SEPTEMBER 13, 2013 Page 7

A true day of rest each week provides important benefits for us, including “an opportunity for your stress level to come down, which is healing in itself.” Rest offers an opportunity to refresh and replenish energy levels, and he goes on to say, “It gives people a chance to connect with family and friends, and enhances relationships, which often get neglected when people are very busy.” It is also a chance to enjoy life and expand it with activities such as reading, music, art and volunteering. Our 24/7 culture takes such a huge toll on “the inner self, the spiritual side of people, the soul.” Even if you are not highly religious, there is a tranquility in being in a sacred space, whether it be a church, synagogue or mosque, or even in a location where you can bask in the beauty of creation. We pause for reflection, and “that pause is exceedingly important.” Time to reflect offers people a chance to step back and gain perspective and inspiration, he said. “Dr. Herbert Benson wrote a book called The Breakout Principle, in which he talked about the fact that when you take time out, away from work, you often get some of your best ideas, or suddenly the solution to a problem you’ve been struggling with will come up when you’re not even thinking about it.” Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. Holiness doesn’t mean moral perfection. It means “to keep something separate.” Here’s another issue in which an ancient religion may have been on to something. Give yourself this gift. It’ll pay huge dividends for you. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Disgraced cyclist Armstrong gives up Olympic medal AUSTIN, Texas - Lance Armstrong says he has returned the bronze medal he won in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. The International Olympic Committee stripped Armstrong of the time-trial medal in January after he publicly confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs during his career. Armstrong says he gave it back to the U.S. Olympic Committee. Armstrong tweeted Thursday: “The 2000 Bronze is back in possession of @usolympics and will be in Switzerland asap.” Armstrong had denied doping for years until his confession after a detailed report released last year by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Armstrong also has been stripped of the seven Tour de France titles he won from 1999-2005. The IOC previously stripped Tyler Hamilton, a former Armstrong teammate, of his time-trial gold medal from the 2004 Olympics after he acknowledged doping. Canadian Press

Tortorella not a fan of Twitter VANCOUVER - New Vancouver Canucks coach John Tortorella doesn’t want his players to get too social on Twitter. Tortorella wants his players to limit their Twitter use because he says the social media site is “nothing but trouble.” He won’t ban players from using it, because he doesn’t want to treat them like little kids. But he adds they better make sure they don’t tweet any information from the locker-room. Several Vancouver players use Twitter, including goaltender Roberto Luongo and forwards David Booth and Alex Burrows. Ironically, Tortorella has his own Twitter page. He is a dog lover and uses his Twitter account for fundraising causes related to canines. Tortorella was known for clashing with the media during his days as coach of the New York Rangers. He’s trying to get along better with reporters on the West Coast, but says some information must “stay in the room.” Canadian Press

STRAIGHT TO THE BANK: The Kootenay Ice Education Fund got a boost on Thursday evening with a $2,500 donation by the Cranbrook Oilman’s Golf Committee, following a tournament at the Cranbrook Golf Club. With professionals from across the oil and gas industry gathering in Cranbrook for the 31st annual event, the Oilman’s committee have donated to many causes over the years and chose to contribute towards the Kootenay Ice Education Fund this time around. Pictured above from left to right: Todd Dean, Ice head coach Ryan McGill, Steve Magus and Ron Dahl hand over a cheque that will go towards the fund.

Ice vets pushing for bigger roles TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

While the preseason is a time for Kootenay Ice rookies and prospects to prove themselves, the veterans aren’t resting on their laurels. Head coach Ryan McGill and his assistant, Jay Henderson, got their first good look at the team during a tournament in Tri-City last weekend, in a trio of games with each ending in a loss. A few rookies managed to get on the scoresheet in the 8-6 shootout against the Silvertips on Saturday, with forward Matthew Alfaro notching a goal, while freshmen defencemen Troy Murray and Dylan Overdyk drew assists on a marker from Collin Shirley. Hudson Elynuik also drew an apple on Kyle O’Connor’s goal.

However, the returnees were contributing as well, as Austin Vetterl scored and collected an assist, while fellow forward Jordyn Boyd found the back of the net. Both Boyd and Vetterl are 19 years old this season and want to bring more offence to their game. Last year, Boyd scored eight goals and tallied a total of 12 points, while Vetterl had five goals and 19 points. Boyd knows there are eyes on him whenever he steps out on the ice. “How you play in preseason is going to predict where you play in the beginning of the year, so obviously I’m showing what I have to the coach as a second-year guy here in Kootenay,” Boyd said. “I want to be more of a role player here this year, possibly get more spe-

cial teams situations.” The Tri-City tournament was a good way for returning vets to earn their roles while giving the rookies a chance to showcase themselves, Vetterl added. “They’re [coaches] are looking at guys that can play roles and for them, it’s good—everyone goes out there and works their hardest, they show what they can do and taking away from it, we’re going to move forward and hopefully build on it and have a better weekend this weekend,” Vetterl said. “…I’m just hoping to play a role on the team and obviously you’re always hoping to build on last year, stats-wise and playing-time-wise, but I’m just going in to hopefully play a role, whatever role they’re going to give me, I’m just going to play it.”

The team has two more preseason games left on the schedule this weekend as they head to the Crowsnest Pass for a pair of games against Lethbridge and Calgary. Despite the record in the Tr-City tournament, Boyd said he sees the chemistry building in the dressing room, adding that it will bring positive results on the ice. “I think this is probably the closest group in the WHL,” Boyd said. “Everyone gets along, there’s no guys really out of the loop on our team, everyone’s friendly with each other, so obviously that pays off.”

NOTES: The club released 16-year-old forward Austin Wellsby after the Tri-City tournament, reassigning him to the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds of the BCMML. That leaves three goaltenders, eight defencemen and 15 forwards on the roster. The club will release season ticket packages on Saturday, Sept. 21, with a pancake breakfast at Western Financial Place from 9 am - 11am. Any season ticket holders who can’t make it to the breakfast can swing by the Kootenay Ice office next week to collect their ticket packages.

Dynamiters set to open new season on home ice

The Nitros are opening their 2013/2014 schedule at home against the Golden Rockets on Saturday night at the Kimberley Civic Centre. The Dynamiters went through their two-game exhibition season with a tie and a win in a home and home series with the Columbia Valley Rockies. Now that the season has arrived, it’s time for the real deal. The Dynamiters are coming into a new season after going through some tough times last year, which ended with a four-game sweep at the hands of the Golden Rockets in the first round of the playoffs. The team has a new coaching staff behind the bench this season, as Jerry Bancks has stepped in to lead the team. Bancks used to be with the franchise back in the Jr. A days in mid-1990s. Puck drops at 7 p.m. Trevor Crawley

Flames coach quiet on new captain L aurence Heinen Canadian Press

CALGARY - Bob Hartley has already made his decision as to who will serve as the next captain of the Calgary Flames. He’s just not ready to make that announcement yet. “I’ll keep it a surprise,” said the Calgary coach when he met with the media after the first on-ice sessions of training camp at the Markin MacPhail Centre. “I want to make it clear. We’re not thinking about someone. Our choice is made up a long time ago.” The captaincy has remained vacant since the Flames traded Jarome Iginla to the Pittsburgh Penguins last season on March 27. After the Flames missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, Hartley and his coaching staff had individual meetings with all of the players, including Mark Giordano, Mike Cammalleri and Curtis Glencross, who served as assistant captains after Iginla’s departure. “We have some very

good prospects to be captains, to be assistant captains, but when all our meetings were done and basically we were coming up with one name, it was basically unanimous that it was the one guy,” said Hartley, while adding that he thinks of his new captain as a great example of commitment and dedication. “I thought that it was an easy choice.” While Cammalleri said he wouldn’t turn down the captaincy, he has a sneaking suspicion that the job will go to Giordano, who is entering his seventh season in the NHL, all of them with the Flames. “My bet would be that Mark would make a great captain of this club,” Cammalleri said. “He’s earned the trust of a lot of guys here for a long time. He’s a tremendous hockey player. He stands for a lot of things that I think would make him a great captain. That would be my guess. “I’d be happy to be alongside with Glennie as an assistant and support him in that role.”

REGINA - Two members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders football team are facing charges after a fight at a Regina nightclub. Defensive back Dwight Anderson, 32, and wide receiver Taj Smith, 29, each face one charge of aggravated assault. Anderson and Smith made a brief appear-

ance together in provincial court Thursday and were released on conditions, including that they keep the peace and stay away from alcohol. They left court without speaking to reporters. Regina police say they were called to nightclub just before 3 a.m. on Aug. 18 after getting a report of a group of people in-

Forward Sven Baertschi, who ended his rookie season last year on a seven-game point streak, also said that Giordano would be perfect for the job. “He’s a phenomenal pro,” Baertschi said. “It

volved in or gathered around a fight. Police say they found a 20-year-old man with serious injuries who was taken to hospital. Anderson and Smith were arrested Wednesday evening. Saskatchewan Roughriders general manager Brendan Taman says the players have not been suspended.

Canadian Pospisil to face Serbia’s Djokovic at Davis Cup C anadian Press

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic will open the Davis Cup semifinals against Vasek Pospisil on Friday when Serbia takes on Canada. In the other singles match drawn Thursday, Janko Tipsarevic will face Milos Raonic, Canada’s top player. The doubles will be played Saturday and reverse

singles are on Sunday. Djokovic said he hopes to recover from the change of the time zones and jet leg after losing the U.S. Open final to Rafael Nadal on Monday. “I arrived yesterday, but it’s not the first time that I have one or two days to get ready,” said Djokovic, who lost in four sets in New York. “I

know my body, and I hope I can prepare for the opening match.” Making things even more difficult for the 26-year-old Serb is the choice of an indoor clay court - originally picked by the hosts to dampen Raonic’s booming serve - that he will have to adjust to in the middle of the hard-court season.

Giordano was more concerned about getting through the first day of training camp unscathed than whether Hartley officially named the new captain. “It’s something I

doesn’t matter if it’s practice or a game, it’s always the same intensity that he has. Seeing him doing the right things every single day in practice and games is a perfect example of a good pro.”

guess that they’ve made their decision about, but as players it’s just get through camp and worry about that for now,” said Giordano, who last served as captain at the Midget AAA level when

he played for the North York Rangers. “That was a tough Day 1 and go from there.” Giordano added that it would definitely be an honour to succeed Iginla as Calgary’s captain.

KELOWNA, B.C. — A debt-free Ballet Kelowna is ready to twirl into action. The regional dance company based in Kelowna, B.C., says it is ready to announce its 2013-2014 season. Just three productions will be staged during the coming sea-

son, including the traditional Christmas favourite, The Nutcracker. Company president Deborah Ward says the shorter season, which includes a series of performances of Romeo and Juliet in January with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, is a conscious choice. She says it’s import-

ant that Ballet Kelowna stage a strong, affordable first season while it gauges the level of support from the region. The company announced in February that it had to disband because of financial constraints but assistance from the community ensured the shows will go on.

Mother pleads for information Hundreds of balloons being used in attempt to cross Atlantic on daughter’s disappearance C ANADIAN PRESS

VANCOUVER — The mother of a young woman who disappeared 20 year ago in Kamloops, B.C., is pleading for information that could bring the family some answers. “Someone may have known from the beginning and for some reason they’re holding their tongue, they’re not saying something,’’ Jackie White said. Sherri Mclaughlin vanished while riding her bike to her boyfriend’s house in the early hours of Sept. 19, 1993. Her body has not been recovered. “Now is the time to please get in-

volved,’’ White told a news conference Thursday. “Come forward. Doesn’t matter how you contact us, but please come forward and help us.’’ Mclaughlin’s mangled bike and backpack were found on the side of the road. RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush said police have identified the car responsible for striking the bicycle. Mounties have never named the prime suspect, but he is dangerous offender 55-year-old Daniel Dow, who has never co-operated from behind bars despite pleas from Mclaughlin’s family.

CARIBOU, Maine — Hundreds of multicolored balloons used Thursday to launch a balloonist for a trans-Atlantic crossing look like a page taken from the script of the movie “Up.’’ Instead of using a conventional hot-air balloon, Jonathan Trappe lifted off using more than 300 helium-filled balloons, like those used in adventure in the Disney-Pixar movie. Trappe’s goal is to float across the ocean. “The Atlantic Ocean has been crossed many times, and in many ways, but never quite like this,’’ the North Carolina native said on his website, which detailed his efforts. City Manager Austin Bleess said about 150 volunteers assisted in filling the helium balloons starting Wednesday night. Trappe and his balloons lifted off from a foggy softball field in northern Maine, near the Canadian border, at sunrise Thursday. “Man, it was awesome,’’ Bleess said. “It was amazing to watch.’’ Also on hand Thursday was Joe Kittinger, a retired Air Force officer who once set a record for jumping from a balloon 31 kilometres up and later became the first solo balloonist to cross the Atlantic in 1984. As for Trappe, he’s no stranger to the cluster balloons. He’s used them to fly in an of-

For his trans-Atlantic crossing, the basket in which he’s riding is actually a lifeboat that could be used if he ditches in the Atlantic. Trappe worked on the trans-Atlantic crossing for two

years and hoped to be the first person to succeed in doing so with a cluster of balloons. By Thursday afternoon, he was well on his way, headed toward Newfoundland. The airborne journey, if it goes according to plan, could take anywhere from three days to six days. Wind currents could bring him to northern Africa or Norway.

For Better or Worse

Evaluate a problem that involves a personal matter. Confusion could make a decision harder to make. Listen to your inner voice before heading in any direction. Know what you need and want. Negotiate from that point, and don’t settle. Tonight: Relax in a familiar place. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You tend to deal with others in a unique way. Sometimes your self-discipline comes across as a stern attitude. You might want to loosen up a bit with your close friends and loved ones. People in general are unpredictable, including you. Tonight: Hang out with a special someone. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Splurging happens easily with you, so make an effort to rein in your natural inclinations. A situation could develop that might shock you. If you can, stay conservative and do not push a matter any further. Trust something is going on. Tonight: Treat a loved one to dinner. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Reach out to a friend or loved one at a distance. You might

want to make special plans to visit this person. Keep paperwork and calls moving in an efficient manner, because you won’t want to deal with any last-minute snafus during the weekend. Tonight: Do what you want. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) The less said the better. You might want to discuss a situation privately with someone before bringing it up with others who are involved. Clear your mind of details, and home in on what is needed. Open up to a trusted friend or two. Tonight: Have an important talk. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You have the capacity to excite and inspire many people. Listen carefully to your peers in a meeting. You might wonder why they are proceeding as they are. Perhaps you’ll want to seek out some clarification. Ask a question rather than give a lecture. Tonight: Find your friends. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My granddaughter, “Mary,” is employed full time, has two daughters, ages 10 and 5, and is pregnant with her third child, even though a divorce has been in the works for at least a year. The problem is that Mary expects her mother, my daughter, “Cindy,” to provide daycare, often for 12 hours a day. Cindy is in her 60s and finds that her stamina is winding down. Not only that, but her loving care has been unappreciated, and she has been treated with disrespect and even contempt. Without affordable daycare, Mary would have to quit her job and go back on welfare. She is putting a real guilt trip and extreme pressure on Cindy, and so are her husband and soon-to-be former in-laws. I feel that my daughter is being taken advantage of, and I think she is becoming increasingly depressed. Just how obligated is she to continue babysitting under these circumstances? -- Concerned Great-Grandma in Seattle Dear Seattle: Both Cindy and Mary are in a difficult position. Since Mary is unlikely to make the effort, Cindy could look into available subsidized daycare or even after-school programs so she doesn’t need to be with the kids for such a long day. Can the in-laws babysit two days a week? What about taking the kids for a couple of hours a day to give Cindy a break? It is up to your daughter whether she wants to continue caring for the grandchildren, but she should look into possible compromises in case there is a better solution than all or nothing. Dear Annie: I’m only 12, but I love reading your column. Here’s my problem: My younger sisters and I don’t get along. Even when I try to be nice to them, they’re always being mean. We are each two years apart, but I feel weak and pathetic around them. Sometimes they side with each other and bully me. Every kind thing I do for them is unappreciated, and they make me so angry, I fight back. A lot of the time it becomes physical. I don’t want to have a bad relationship with them, but I fear things will never change. -- The Hated Older Sister Dear Sister: We think your siblings are too immature to understand the value of having a big sister who wants a closer relationship. Part of the reason they behave this way is to get a rise out of you and control your attention. Try to walk away from those engagements. Talk to your parents about mediating some of these fights. You also could discuss the problem with your school counselor. Remember, sisterhood is for the long haul. You may have to wait until your siblings are older before you can have the relationship you are hoping for, but if you are patient, it will happen. Dear Annie: This is a response to the letter from “Feeling Sorry in Vermont,” who was concerned about the teenage children who cannot read or write in cursive. Here’s an update for her: Cursive writing is no longer being taught in most schools in my state. The teachers in our community who teach writing are upset and angry about this. It means these children will not have a signature. Major documents that include “print and sign” will soon simply say “print and print.” -- Champs Mom Dear Champs: A lot of people are upset that cursive writing seems to be going the way of the dinosaur. We find cursive useful. But a lot of skills have gone by the wayside over the years. Remember all those guys who could flip open a car hood and repair the engine? Try doing that now. Handwriting is being replaced by keyboards, which will soon enough be replaced by dictation software. One’s “signature” is likely to be a thumbprint or a retinal scan. Time marches on. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Please email your questions to anniesmailbox@comcast.net, or write to: Annie’s Mailbox, c/o Creators Syndicate, 737 3rd Street, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254. I thought of you with love today but that is nothing new. I thought about you yesterday and days before that too. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name. All I have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is my keepsake which I’ll never part. God has you in his keeping, I have you in my heart.

Eternally Remember Your Loved One

Karl Anton Hallgren Oct. 28, 1934 - Sept. 13, 2002 If we could have a lifetime wish, And one dream that could come true, We would pray to God with all our hearts, Just to see and speak to you. A thousand words won’t bring you back, We know because we’ve tried, And neither will a million tears, We know because we’ve cried. You’ve left behind our broken hearts, And precious memories too, But we’ve never wanted memories, We’ve only wanted you. With love always, Linda, Chris, Kara and Families

NEWS Voyager 1 probe becomes first spacecraft to leave the solar system Alicia Chang Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Voyager 1 has crossed a new frontier, becoming the first spacecraft ever to leave the solar system, NASA said Thursday. Thirty-six years after it was launched from Earth on a tour of the outer planets, the plutonium-powered probe is more than 18.5 billion kilometres from the sun, cruising through interstellar space — the vast, cold emptiness between the stars, the space agency said. Voyager 1 actually made its exit more than a year ago, according to NASA. But it’s not as if there’s a dotted boundary line or a signpost out there, and it was not until recently that scientists with the space agency had enough evidence to say that the probe had finally plowed through the hot plasma bubble surrounding the planets and escaped the sun’s influence. While some scientists remain unconvinced, NASA celebrated with a news conference featuring the theme from “Star Trek.’’ “We got there,’’ said mission chief scientist Ed Stone of the California Institute of Technology, adding that the spacecraft was “setting sail in the cosmic seas

This artist rendering released by NASA shows NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft barreling through space. between the stars.’’ While Voyager 1 may have left the solar system as most people understand it, it still has hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years to go before bidding adieu to the last icy bodies that make up our neighbourhood. Voyager 1 will now study exotic particles and other phenomena in a never-before-explored part of the universe littered with ancient star explosions and radio the data back to Earth, where the Voyager team awaits the starship’s discoveries. The interstellar ambassador also carries a gold-plated disc containing multicultural

greetings, songs and photos, just in case it bumps into an intelligent species. Voyager 1’s odyssey began in 1977 when the spacecraft and its twin, Voyager 2, were launched on a tour of the gas giant planets of the solar system. After beaming back dazzling postcard views of Jupiter’s giant red spot and Saturn’s shimmering rings, Voyager 2 hopscotched to Uranus and Neptune. Meanwhile, Voyager 1 used Saturn as a gravitational slingshot to power itself past Pluto. Voyager 1, which is about the size of a subcompact car, carries instruments that study

magnetic fields, cosmic rays and solar wind. Last year, scientists monitoring Voyager 1 noticed strange happenings that suggested the spacecraft had broken through: Charged particles streaming from the sun suddenly vanished. At the same time, there was a spike in galactic cosmic rays bursting in from the outside. Since there was no detectable change in the direction of the magnetic field lines, the team assumed the far-flung craft was still in the heliosphere, or the vast bubble of charged particles around the sun. The Voyager team patiently waited for a change in magnetic field

direction — thought to be the telltale sign of a cosmic border crossing. But in the meantime, a chance solar eruption caused the space around Voyager 1 to echo like a bell last spring and provided the scientists with the data they needed, convincing them the boundary had been crossed in August of last year. Voyager 2 trails behind at 15.29 billion kilometres from the sun. It may take another three years before Voyager 2 joins its twin on the other side. Eventually, the Voyagers will run out of nuclear fuel and will have to power down their instruments, perhaps by 2025.

JK Rowling to write new film set in world of wizardry Jill Lawless Associated Press

LONDON — J.K. Rowling’s world of wizardry is coming back to the big screen — but without Harry Potter. Film studio Warner Bros. announced Thursday that Rowling will write the screenplay for a movie based on “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,’’ her textbook to the magical universe she created in the boy wizard’s stories. The story will focus on the book’s fictitious author, Newt Scamander, and is anticipated to be the first in a series. Rowling said in a statement the movie “is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world.’’ She said the story would begin in New York 70 years before the start of Harry Potter’s tale.

Author J.K. Rowling.

Screenwriting is the latest in a string of new ventures for Rowling since she finished writing the Harry Potter series, which has sold more than 450 million copies around the world.

She has published a novel for adults, “The Casual Vacancy,’’ and written detective thriller “The Cuckoo’s Calling’’ under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. Rowling said the idea for a “Fantastic Beasts’’ film had come from Warner Bros., and she soon realized she could not entrust another writer with her creation. “Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it,’’ she said. “I already knew a lot about Newt.’’ “As I considered Warner’s proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.’’ As well as movies, Warner Bros. said “Fantastic Beasts’’ would be “developed across the studio’s video game, con-

sumer products and digital initiatives businesses.’’ Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., was behind eight Harry Potter movies, released between 2001 and 2011. Rowling did not write the screenplays for those films, which Warner Bros. says took in $7.7 billion at the global box office. Since the film series wrapped up, the company has been involved in related ventures including a Harry Potter studio tour near London, Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park in Orlando, Florida, and the Pottermore website. Warner Bros. also said Thursday it would be the worldwide distributor for a television adaptation of “The Casual Vacancy.’’ The BBC is due to film the miniseries next year.
