Internet gaming café a go By Treena Mielke A proposed Internet gaming café has received a green light from town council. Mark Steeves spoke to council about his business plan at the Sept. 9 meeting. He feels the gaming cafe will fill a niche in the community. “It is our intention to address the need identified in the recreational master plan regarding shortcomings in spontaneous use facilities,” he said. “We are focusing on the positive aspects of gaming rather than dwelling on the negative aspects the media has tied to the activity.” Steeves, who plans to open his new business in the old creamery, wants to create a fun, healthy and safe environment. The implementation of the WWW social gaming platform, house league LAN competitions and fantasy board gaming

space will be set up with 16 to 35-yearolds targeted. Violent games will not be available for children aged eight to 13, he said. Youth between 13 and 15 years will need a signed permission slip as well as verbal parental consent to play games with violent content. “We recognize as parents ourselves the negative impact that some of the more violent games pose on some of the more vulnerable youth and have taken steps to limit the younger aspect of our clients to more age suitable games,” he said. Steeves believes gaming in a social setting provides a positive atmosphere for youth. “What we truly believe to be the worst thing about gaming is the amount of time a youth will spend isolated, shut off from the

real world and immersed in a virtual world of the first person shooter game. Mix this with low self-esteem or depression or onset undiagnosed mental illness and you have a ticking time bomb.” Gaming at an Internet café provides a social environment that is fun-packed and ripe with opportunities of new friendships based on same interests and the introduction of new interests, he added. “All of a sudden the awkward teenager has his glory days. It is these often very gifted individuals that need an outlet where they fit in, a place where they can shine.” “We have a vision of a business that acts as a social hub for the youth of our community. We are for profit. We are not there to act as a councillor for your children; we’re strictly there to entertain. There will be a zero tolerance on bully-

ing, drugs and alcohol and any evidence of breaking this policy will result in a call to the police and permanent banning. An adult staff member will always be duty. It is our vision to provide a safe place to play for everyone.” The café will be open from 11 a.m. until 1 a.m. daily. A snack bar will be available and wireless Internet access provided. Adult learning will have access to the building during non-peak hours. Coun. Scott Ellis liked the business proposal.“I like the idea you are trying to create a sense of community. To me that’s a valid point.” “I don’t see any problem with the proposal,” said Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson. “Any new venture in town is always good.” Steeves is hoping to be open for business later this month.

Former councillor wants new direction By Treena Mielke A former town councillor and advocate for change has thrown his hat into the political ring. Dave Karroll will let his name stand in the upcoming fall election as a candidate for town council. Karroll, who has lived in Rimbey for 18 years with his wife, Phyllis, served on council for nine years and says he understands what it Dave Karroll takes to develop a community. “The records will show that we grew Rimbey at an unprecedented rate of 17 per cent to a population of 2,500 people and our commercial and residential development and land base represented growth in excess of $200 million of development during that

RE-ELECT

time frame,” he said. The 68-year-old is proud the council of his time was successful in securing millions of dollars of grants from the Progressive Conservative government and was in a co-operative partnership with Ponoka County on a number of projects. Karroll is adamant council needs to take a new direction if Rimbey is to prosper. He encourages voters to consider a new mayor and council to give the town a fresh start. “We are showing a five-per-cent population reduction, losing over 100 people according to a recent census and the atmosphere of the business community reflects a lack of confidence. They are concerned about the actions of the current council and administration.” The former councillor is proud to be the visible face of “defend democracy” and was pleased council’s plan to sell the town office for one dollar was defeated. “I understand the needs of young families as my son and grandson also call Rimbey home. I have a plan for economic recovery, restoring confidence in our business community and marketing our community to the rest of the province. Rimbey

What is the real story? Nomination day is drawing closer and even though I haven’t seen a lot of campaign signs, candidates, sort of like hidden jack-inthe-boxes, are starting to spring up. Of course, not a lot of people have come forward to the print Treena Mielke media and made their On The Other Side intention known with a resounding, “yes, I’m running,” but, even so, word is getting out. I, of course, remain a media fly on the wall; a silent spectator, hovering quietly, trying to make no buzzing sound whatsoever, because, if people know I’m there they have this annoying habit of not talking, which makes it difficult to report the truth. Or report anything, good, bad or indifferent, for that matter. I find as election day gets closer and closer there are so many versions of the truth floating around it is polluting our beautiful crisp, clean September. Reporting the truth is, in fact, a wonderful goal and truly something to strive for. I have, however, in my long (we are talking very long) career (I mean, I was here after hot lead, but before computers and digital cameras which puts me in the black and white world of print media somewhere in the early ‘80s), I have discovered everybody tells the truth. They just tell different versions of it. Their version! And I have discovered us media people are kind of like mom and dad. We are told exactly what we are supposed to know. And nothing more. And, so like mom and dad, we have to pry, cajole and question to find out the other stuff; the between-the-lines stuff.

With all this hype about the coming election going on, hype that will only get worse in the coming weeks, I decided I needed to chill out and destress. And so I went to hot yoga. And I discovered hot yoga is an experience like no other. Within minutes I found my mind stripped of rational thought, reasoning and common sense logic. It was hot; so hot and much to my horror I learned I did not glow like a lady, but sweated like a guy. Profusely. The sweat trickled down my face in unappealing rivulets, taking my $20 mascara and $40 foundation with it. The sweat was salty and it got in my eyes and I felt like I was crying and before long I was. “I’m so hot,” I whined, hoping someone would open a door or a window or something. No one did. Before the class was even half over, I found myself filled with an intense longing to flop onto my matt and remain there like the pathetic, limp noodle I had turned into, until the election, or at least the class, was over. But no, I obediently pushed, prodded and

poked my unresponsive body into all kinds of poses which stretched and pulled it into positions it did not want to go. And I listened humbly to the instructor, who bounced around like some kind of tiny commanding officer (minus the uniform and medals which would be totally inappropriate in a hot yoga room). “Don’t listen to your ego,” she said. “It’s your ego that makes you want to go beyond your limits. You’re only competing against yourself. No one else cares.” “Okay,” I said, willingly, happily, curling up contentedly into the child’s pose and trying to blink the salty sweat out of my eyes. I left hot yoga stripped of makeup and anything that even vaguely resembled ego and stumbled into the shower to see if I could find the self I used to be before I became the bedraggled, wet noodle I now was. I did. Weirdly enough, I will probably go back. And, weirdly enough also, the thing I remember most is the instructor saying, “don’t listen to your ego. It’s a good lesson for us all – whether we are doing hot yoga or running for politics!

Syria: An Unexpected Rabbit When someone pulls a rabbit out of a hat, it’s natural to be suspicious. Magicians are professionals in deceit – and so are diplomats. But sometimes the rabbit is real. On Monday morning, the world was heading into the biggest crisis in years: a looming American attack on Syria, a Russian response that could set off the first major confrontation between Washington and Moscow since the Cold War, and the possible spread of the fighting from Syria to neighbouring countries. By Tuesday morning all that had changed. A Russian proposal for Syria to get rid of all its chemical weapons was promptly accepted by the Syrian foreign minister, Walid al-Moallem, and the Senate vote on Obama’s planned strikes on Syria was postponed, probably for weeks. If Syria keeps its word, the vote may never be held. What a difference a day makes. The sequence of events was as follows. At the Moscow G20 summit last week, Obama and Russian president Vladimir Putin had a one-to-one chat at which one of them broached the possibility of persuading Syria to give up its chemical weapons entirely. Which one isn’t clear, and the idea was not pursued by either of them.

Gwynne Dyer Guest Columnist

Then on Monday John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, gave an off-the-cuff reply in London to a question about whether Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad could avoid an American attack. “Sure. He could turn over every bit of his (chemical) weapons to the international community within the next week, without delay,” said Kerry. “But he isn’t about to.” Kerry then got on a plane to fly home, and halfway across the Atlantic he got a call from the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, saying that he was about to announce that Russia would ask Syria to put all its chemical weapons storage facilities under international control and then destroy them. The Syrian foreign minister promptly declared that Assad’s regime “welcomes Russia’s initiative, based on the Syrian government’s care about the lives of our people and security of our country.” By Monday evening Obama was saying that the Russian plan “could potentially be a significant breakthrough,” and the pot was off the boil.

The whole thing, therefore, was made up on the fly. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it won’t work, but it is a proposal that comes without any of the usual preparation that precedes a major diplomatic initiative. The reason we don’t know the details is that there aren’t any. What we do know is that everybody – Obama, Putin and Assad – is clearly desperate to avoid going to war, and that gives us reason to hope. There is much suspicion in Washington that this is merely a delaying tactic to stall an American attack and sap already weak popular support in the United States for military action. Moreover, it will be hard to send international troops in to secure Syria’s chemical weapons (at least forty storage sites, plus some weapons in the hands of military units) unless there is a ceasefire in the civil war now raging all over the country. But the American military will be pleased, because they were really unhappy about the job that Obama was giving them, and Obama himself looks like a man who has been granted a new lease of life. There will be time to try to make this work. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

Senior’s entire apple crop stolen Dear Editor, On a scale of one to ten, this issue does not necessarily rate as a high priority, but I would sincerely like to find out who it was that helped herself to all the apples from the tree in my back yard on Wednesday, August 28. My bumper crop of apples was picked completely clean that morning and no one, it seems, can help me resolve the matter. According to my neighbor, who came over to check why his dog was barking, the lady in question claimed that I told her she could help herself to the apples and hoped he didn’t mind. Why should he mind? Maybe she should have asked me that question first! Not knowing any different, my neighbor made no further inquiries or further checks as to her identity (although he did wonder

why I would even offer such a thing, knowing how thrilled I was with the size and number of the apples this year!) Now I know there may be some misunderstanding somewhere and I would settle for that, if there was. But I was eagerly anticipating picking those apples and making my annual stores of applesauce and pie filling preserves for myself and my family. I would never have offered ALL the apples for anyone else to come and pick. What I really question is why this woman would show up on one of the mornings that most people know I am regularly away, as a vendor at a local farmer’s market. Why would she not notify me first that she was coming? Or leave a thank you note, or some idea that she had come and gone? All I find

a day later, to my utter surprise, is a barren fruit tree in my back yard! As an 82-year-old senior, it disturbs me that some would do that. Someone not only took my full apple harvest, but more importantly, they robbed me of the pleasure of making my preserves, as well as the joy of gifting those preserves to my children and grandchildren. As I stated before, it seems a trivial concern, but the underlying principle of someone coming to my home while I am away and ‘helping herself’ to EVERY apple off my tree, without so much as a word, just has me peeved. Nuts & Bolts on the future of real estate By: Gair Maxwell – Author of “Nuts, Bolts & a Few Loose Screws”

I

’m lucky enough to have one of the best gigs out there. Over 100 times a year, I Ày across North America, speaking to top CEO groups and at conferences like the Apple Specialist Marketing Group about the tribal reasons why some brands are more inspiring, powerful and pro¿table than others. In other words, breaking down the genetic code shared by brands as diverse as Starbucks, Ferrari, Jack Daniels, Lululemon, the Marine Corps, TED Talks, Apple, and about 70 other “brands of distinction” that generate deep emotional attachment to their product, service or offering. One of the emerging “brands of distinction” I’m most fond of within the real estate category is PropertyGuys.com. They are pro¿led in my book, “NUTS, BOLTS AND A FEW LOOSE SCREWS” and get to share some of their stories on the speaking and conference circuit. I’ve personally used their program to sell my last two properties back East so it is easy to share with you why I think that they are about to become the “Apple” of the real estate category. There is growing market interest in expanding their Western Canadian presence, the timing could not be better for them to pull it off. I’m not their only fan since 57,000 other Canadians have already used them. Since humble beginnings (starting with less than $100 while company founders were still in college), PropertyGuys.com has crafted a fresh, national challenger brand focused on savvy sellers looking to avoid high fees charged by traditional agents. From the beginning, PropertyGuys.com built their business model around the customer they serve as opposed to forcing that customer into a rigid process involving brokers and agents. Similar to how Apple recon¿gured the music business by eliminating archaic distribution channels that made record companies and their artists rich, PropertyGuys.com has been quietly doing the same thing in real estate, making the customer (buyers and sellers) the hub as opposed to just another spoke in the wheel.

Their success should come as no surprise given their concept will typically cost up to 10 times less than it would to use a traditional agent. On a property sale those savings add up to 10’s of thousands of dollars. The PropertyGuys.com system includes expert marketers, innovative real estate brokers, certi¿ed appraisers, experienced real estate lawyers, seasoned mortgage professionals and a unique answering and appointment-booking service. Their strategy of eliminating the listing agent from the mix (while keeping the face-2-face personal touch) delivers a more transparent, rewarding and less fearful experience as buyers and sellers can relate to the bene¿ts of this “Spend Less, Get More” approach. In my personal experience, I enjoyed being completely free to offer as little or as much commission as I wanted to – how cool is that? In other words, I had complete control over my bottom line at all times and was able to leverage multiple platforms and people instead of being at the mercy of a single agent; locked into a 3, 6 or even a 12 month listing contract. Show me the money! When I took a closer look at the total commission an agent charges I found them to be ridiculously expensive. But, in true Jerry Maguire fashion, I began questioning where the money actually goes...and who actually bene¿ts. I think that if those fees (and what is performed for those fees) were more transparent – fewer people would be inclined to list with an agent. Like the dinosaurs of the 20th century music industry (which relied on distribution of vinyl & CD’s through retailers), the agent model as we know it will become obsolete for many sellers who just can’t afford to pay their exorbitantly high fees anymore. One thing is certain in this age of speed & chaos. Like many other hugely successful “customer focused” brands, PropertyGuys. com will keep challenging the status quo (like Steve Jobs did with iTunes) to make things better for people like you and me.

Over the past 4 years, our local Red Deer franchise has helped hundreds of local home owners sell their property privately which has resulted in saving them Millions of dollars in commissions. The PropertyGuys.com Flat Fee program is always evolving and is now better than ever before. For more information on how to Spend Less and Get More, please contact the local PropertyGuys.com office at (403)588-8245 or email us at elysons@propertyguys.com.

By Treena Mielke An empty and deserted park on 46 Ave. may be turned back into a playground if enough people get behind the project. The playground equipment at the park on 46 Ave. between 52 and 53rd streets has been removed and presently there are no plans for this space. However, Peter Stenstrom, director of community services, is making another attempt to garner public input regarding the playground. “Our objective will be to discover some potential uses of the space and to hear what the majority of the local users want.” Stenstrom said at this point we’ve had one idea come forward and that is to make it into a playground again. It would be a bit of a process, but if we want to go that route, it would have to be budgeted for now so the money could be in place for 2014. Earlier this year Shauna Shields, a mom who lives near the playground, wrote to council asking them to look at installing minimal equipment such as a swing set and/or basketball hoop. Rec message gone unheard Continued from page 8 At that time CAO Tony Goode said there was no dollars in the budget for playgrounds, but it could be put in the budget for next year. An off leash dog park and a park area with a gazebo are a couple of ideas which have been discussed by the recreation board. “The rec board held a public meeting about this park several months back, but due to poor attendance no clear message from the public was heard,” Stenstrom said.

The rec board will hold another public meeting at the park on Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. with free hotdogs and pop available. “Our objective will be to discover some potential uses of the space and to hear what the majority of the local users want.” It would be a bit of a process to make it into a playground again, but if we want to go that route, it would have to be budgeted for now so the money could be in place for 2014.

Live life, appreciate value of family strength Dear Editor: I have asked my son to help me with this letter because he has much more education than I, and a much better vocabulary of the Queen’s English.

Kevin already knows that I don’t want a funeral or memorial service. That this is to be published in every newspaper that will accept it, after I’m gone, and that all possible will read it.

WANTED

If my words help one person, or one family, it will have made my life worthy and complete. It is a terrible reality to wake up every morning knowing you have got something wrong with you and also knowing there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, without time and without other’s help. My life has been wonderful and fantastic, especially my senior years. There has been an immense

amount of fun. Have a positive attitude and true faith in your God. Never take anyone or anything for granted. The glory is in doing a good deed, not in the glory of doing it. I have no regrets. There have also been a lot of dark times in my life, however. The post-pregnancy depression that is so common with women, I could not get over. There is so much help available now in the way of therapy and drugs. Little was available in the ’50s and ’60s. Little was known in the medical community about manicdepressive illness or mental illnesses in general. People get sick and people get healthy. This is the same mentally, as well as physically. Just because you don’t see it does not mean that it is not there. It amazes and infuriates me the number of people who go to a doctor with a minor injury such as a couple of broken toes. Yet they, or their families, will use a denial mind-set when they have a mental illness. Quite often, one little pill and they can live normally ever after. This stigma attached to mental illness is absolute garbage. One would think we have advanced further as a civilization. Obviously not. Never quit or abandon your family or community. Your family must always know that you are there for them. There may be times that you have to step aside from someone sick to save your own sanity, but no matter the time, distance or illness never quit on them. Ellen Emmons, Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury, Ponoka September 2010 Editor’s note: This was written by Ellen Emmons with the help of her son, Kevin Emmons. She died in August.
