Motorcyclists injured Two people riding a motorcycle were hospitalized after colliding with a pickup truck. The accident occurred Sunday on the South Island Highway near Maryland Road. According to RCMP, the male driver on the
southbound motorcycle was attempting to pass the vehicle in front of him which had slowed to make a right turn off the highway. As the motorcycle was passing, a pickup truck attempted to pull north onto the highway from Maryland causing
the motorcycle to strike the front of the vehicle. Both the motorcyclist and his female passenger were injured in the collision and were taken by ambulance to Campbell River Hospital. The man suffered more serious, non-life threatening
injuries and was later transferred to hospital in Victoria. Mounties continue to investigate the accident. The highway was closed for a short time while emergency personnel tended to the injured and the investigation took place.

“Hmm, my lights still work,” Benoit said. “I understand that old infrastructure needs repairing or replacement but it seems like they started with the meters. Could it be that they need to implement timeof-use as another layer of charges to help pay off their deficits?” BC Hydro will be implementing the new monthly charge to old meter users as of Dec. 2 while those who choose a radio-off meter will start seeing additional charges starting April 1, 2014. But while keeping an old meter is an option right now, Hydro says it can’t guarantee that will always be the case.
Old meters will be replaced if they break or if the meter’s measurement accuracy seal expires as long as the existing stock of old meters lasts. As per Hydro’s traditional practice, those with old meters and radio-off meters will have a BC Hydro representative visit their property to measure consumption use. If a meter cannot be read, a customer’s bill will be estimated. Benoit said he’s basically left with three options. “Bend to this extortion and get a new meter…accept a new meter turned off and pay an installation fee
along with a continuing monthly fee of $20 (or) keep the old analog meter and pay the extortion fee.” Benoit said he would even be willing to send in his own meter readings each month to save Hydro from “estimating our bill.” While Hydro has already sent out letters to customers informing them of the new charges should they refuse a smart meter, the proposed fees still have to be approved by the BC Utilities Commission. BC Hydro says it has already installed more than 1.8 million smart meters around the province.
Meters: Hydro imposing charge
as well as a $100 set-up fee and $20 monthly fee for those who choose a radio-off smart meter, “offset the expense of adding infrastructure to ensure BC Hydro’s electricity grid works as planned. The fees will also cover the cost of manually performing services now automated by smart meters. Costs will be reviewed by the BC Utilities Commission,” according to a letter from Greg Reimer, executive vice-president of transmission and distribution. But Benoit disputes that BC Hydro is simply charging the fee to check their power grids.

DeBruyne started with Quality Foods in Comox March of 2000 as a Dairy Manager and in four years he worked his way up to Store Manager and transferred to Campbell River in September of 2004 to open the Merecroft Quality Foods. “The very first people to befriend me in Campbell River were the Chamber of Commerce. It was through the chamber that we were able to first get the word out in the community that Quality Foods was here and was going to become a community leader,” DeBruyne said. A true community champion, DeBruyne brought the Festival of Lights to Campbell River for the Canada Day celebration in 2005. Over the last nine years, Quality Foods has contributed over $200,000 towards this Campbell River family event. “In 2006 I joined the

Board’s rejection contradicts province’s approval Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
The provincial government is stepping in after the Strathcona Regional District board turned down the Klahoose First Nation’s marina project on Cortes Island. Rudi Mayser, the manager of authorization for the province, wrote a letter to the board of directors Sept. 4 to request a meeting with the regional district. At its meeting last week, the board subsequently voted to arrange to have Mayser attended an upcoming board meeting. In his letter, Mayser said he had already approve d K l a ho os e Resort Limited’s application to the province to use the Squirrel Cove site for a marina and the regional district’s decision clashed with his
Teenage thieves caught Two teenage boys are facing charges of theft, possession of stolen property and trespassing at night. The two, ages 16 and 18, were arrested Sept. 9, after an alert citizen called 911 to report thieves going through parked vehicles on South McPhedran Road. When officers arrived on the scene, the two suspects fled, but were caught shortly later while trying to hide behind a home on Edgewood Drive. According to Campbell River RCMP, there had been a recent spike in vehicle breakins in the area before the arrests occurred.
Two charged after drug investigation Following a twomonth-long investigation, members of the RCMP’s Street Crew arrested two local men in connection with drug trafficking. The officers finally swept in after observing
approval. “The divergence of these two independent decisions has created a difficult situation and impasse for the proponents, having received the provincial and federal authorizations, but been denied the support of local government authorities,” Mayser wrote. “In light of this, I would like to propose a meeting with you to explore options to resolve this impasse. At the meeting, I would also be interested to learn about the SRD’s (Strathcona Regional District) reasons for the decision to deny the re-zoning of the area in question.” Directors Brenda Leigh (Area D) and Gerald Whalley (Area A) both voted against the re-zoning application for the marina. Whalley took the opinion of the boating com-
munity, which he said would be the group most directly affected by the project, to heart when voting. The majority of boaters and the BC Yacht Clubs were against the proposal and said they would not be inclined to use the marina. Leigh said she thought the area should be preserved after hearing from boaters who said they were concerned over the loss of good anchorage sites to commercial entities. While several Cortes Islanders have vocally opposed the board’s decision, two Cortes Islanders recently sent a letter of support to Leigh and Whalley. Mary and Vern Kemp thanked the two directors for voting down the project. “Your decision is right to dismiss this applica-

A police dog was brought in to search the second suspect’s vehicle and inside the dog discovered cocaine, heroin, drug trafficking paraphernalia and cash. Both men were arrested and later released on conditions. Cuong Lai, 47, is charged with trafficking a controlled substance and two counts of possession (cocaine and heroin) for the purpose of trafficking. Lai is due back in Campbell River provincial court at a later date. A 35-year-old Campbell River resident, whose name was not released, is also facing a heroin trafficking charge.

Accused killer intends to defend himself Paul Rudan
Campbell RiveR miRRoR
A man charged with first degree murder now intends to represent himself when the case goes to trial in B.C. Supreme Court. Traigo Andretti, 37, is charged with killing his wife Jennifer McPherson, 41. He’s also charged with committing an indignity to a human body after
her remains were discovered May 6 on Hanson Island. Andretti has been in custody since then and has frustrated several judges as he continues to flip-flop on getting legal representation. “This is an unusual circumstance,” Crown prosecutor David Fitzsimmons said Monday in the Campbell River courtroom.
Andretti was initially represented by a Victoria lawyer who was granted a judge’s permission to withdraw from the case due to a lack of co-operation from her client. Then on Aug. 28, Andretti made a personal appearance in Campbell River in an attempt to sort out the ongoing situation. That morning he appeared in provincial court where he stated
that he intended to plead guilty. About two hours later though, he appeared before a supreme court justice, pleaded not guilty and said he wanted a lawyer. But all that changed again on Monday when Andretti, appearing by video from jail cells in Victoria, said he would represent himself at a jury trial with no pre-

it took pepper spray and six RCMP officers to subdue him when he was being arrested for theft in downtown Campbell River. He spent 76 days in custody and was released after being found not criminally responsible – due to his mental illness – on a variety of charges, including assaulting a police officer. Two days after his release though, he was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox after consuming a lethal amount of cough syrup. He survived the overdose and was kept in hospital
North Island MLA suggests alternatives for extra hospital beds
we need our new hospital, but everyone is concerned that it will be overcrowded as soon as it opens its doors,” said Trevena. “And we have very many needs. We desperately need hospice beds in Campbell River; we will always likely need extra space for seniors, there are short term needs which can be met. My suggestion to the Minister is that we retain part of our existing hospital for these and other services.” Trevena is making the suggestion ahead of the final decision on who
receive medical care and remain in one place. The Crown asked for a 60-day jail sentence, but the judge said 45 days is enough. That means Steinthorson will likely get out in 30 days after serving two-thirds of his latest sentence for breaching a courtordered curfew. In the public gallery, following Monday’s court proceedings, was Rhonda Johnson – Steinthorson’s mother, who is a tireless advocate for her son’s mental health needs – a probation officer and two members of a mental health team who will assist Steinthorson after the successful proponent for designing and building the new facility in the hope that it can be integrated into the planning process.
his release. Speaking outside the courtroom, Johnson was grateful her son has temporary protection and the public is safe, but she’s adamant there needs to be better long-term support for people with mental health issues in B.C. She said her son will get assistance after his release from jail, but just for half a day and he’s expected to live on his own. Johnson is certain that without monitoring, her son will put himself and others in danger. “We need to do more,” she simply said. paulr@campbellrivermirror.com “Not all of the existing hospital is old and it makes no sense to tear it down completely if we need the space it provides,” said Trevena.

North Island MLA, Claire Trevena, is continuing to push for extra beds for the new hospital in Campbell River. In a letter to the Minister of Health, Trevena has suggested using part of the current hospital to provide some extra space. “There is no question
longer for yet another psychiatric assessment. During his stay at St. Joe’s, he was given a onehour pass which he used to buy and consume a mickey of liquor. The biggest problem is monitoring Steinthorson to ensure he takes his medication, doesn’t consume alcohol and narcotics, and he stays in the residence that’s been approved by probation services. Judge Cowling pointed out that hospitals are unlikely to readmit Steinthorson unless he has another medical emergency, and jail is the only place where he can
liminary inquiry. The judge warned that Andretti is “embarking on a perilous journey” by not having a lawyer on such a serious matter. Nevertheless, the court will appoint a lawyer to advise Andretti when the case finally gets to trial. “All we can do is move forward,” said Fitzsimmons. A trial date is expected to be set at Andretti’s next court appearance on Oct. 21.

Our View
The reasons for Hydro rate increases Leaked documents indicate that BC Hydro is planning a 26 per cent rate increase over the next two years. While the BC Liberal government says the rate hike will not be that high, this is at least the third time in the past year that there has been of a massive BC Hydro rate We say: Victoria indications increase in the works. needs to stop There are several concerns about this, interfering in BC whether the 26 per cent increase comes to fruition or not. Hydro’s business It’s no secret that Hydro has to come up with billions of dollars to continue to upgrade the electrical utility system it operates. The infrastructure, some of which goes back to the 1960s or
earlier, needs attention. Hydro also wants to build the Site C dam on the Peace River, which would cost billions in itself. At the same time, Hydro has been handicapped by the BC Liberal government in two very important areas. First, it has been required to make massive dividend payments to the province, its only shareholder. These have been used to keep the provincial budget from dipping deeper into the red. While there may be some justification for the province occasionally taking a dividend from Hydro, the size and regularity of its demands are unprecedented. When a corporation needs to raise billions for capital projects, it makes sense that dividends be cut back or even eliminated. If Hydro was a private sector corporation,
that is likely what it would be doing, in order to have at least some of its own cash to spend on infrastructure. In addition, the dividends are highly political. They are used to keep the deficit down and allow politicians to boast about B.C.’s low income tax rate. This boast ignores ever-increasing Hydro, ICBC and Medical Service Premium rates, all of which must be paid by most B.C. residents. The other handicap Hydro has is that it has been forced to buy run-of-river power from small contractors at rates far in excess of what it costs to produce its own power. The provincial government needs to stop interfering in Hydro’s business, and let it run the electric utility in the efficient manner. – Black Press

Lots of other cartoon topics
I respect the views of individuals who do not approve of hunting as a legal activity. However, if your paper is going to publish cartoons to represent this point of view, how about cartoons to show how ski and golf course developments destroy valuable wildlife habitat? What about farming practices which do the same? How about cartoons that show how chickens and eggs are mass produced and the living conditions the chickens must endure? What about feedlot conditions for beef and pork production or the life of a dairy cow so that individuals can enjoy their morning latte? If these topics are too controversial, how about cartoons on the effects of hydro, oil and gas, mining, forestry, highways urban sprawl and land development as just a few of many examples that have a far greater impact on grizzlies and other wildlife than a few hunters? How about cartoons showing the large amount of money hunting and fishing organizations raise each year for habitat and wildlife protection and enhancement? How much are the individuals that protest against these activities contributing to saving our wildlife and habitat? Urbanization and the spread of man’s activities globally has impacted all forms of wildlife to the point where

My acting career: taking it on the jaw and a torn rotator cuff
Alistair Taylor
Out On A Limb @AlstrT
editor@campbellrivermirror.com
Every time I go into Rivercity Players “clubhouse,” as it used to be called, it’s like walking down memory lane. It’s the posters on the wall and the accompanying photo displays that do it. I can’t help but peruse them and remember all the people involved and the fun we had. Some of our greatest friends were made through Rivercity Players. There’s the pics of No Sex Please, We’re British which I performed in the, oh, 1890s, I think. Okay, the 1990s but it seems like so long ago. Well, I guess I have to admit that it was a long time ago. I have good cause to remember that play, besides being a box office smash and a whole lot of fun, it was the play in which I dislocated my shoulder for the first time. I had to hurl my body over a counter and through a styrofoam panel to land on a foam landing pad on the
other side. Trouble is, during one rehearsal, I didn’t quite land on it properly and my left shoulder bore the weight of my flying body as it stopped me cold on the concrete floor of the old “clubhouse.” Director Ron Hagerman had to stand in for me in that scene for the actual run of the play. Don’t say, I never give my all to a performance. I did seem to have a penchant for violent parts. There was the one character I played that would always get slugged in the face by her daughter. Yes, I said “her” daughter. I was playing Angeline, 90 years old and wheelchair-bound, in Michel Tremblay’s Les Belles Soeurs. I was cast in this all-woman play because the director felt the audience might be more comfortable with the elder abuse
if the role was filled by a man. I was glad Carol Lang’s aim was always spot on. I had about four lines but was onstage for the whole production. I like to think it was my tour de force acting performance. Probably more like tour de farce. Ba-dum! Mostly, however, I’ve been behind the scenes directing productions. Not that there’s any correlation between the violence onstage I’ve participated in and the fading out of the limelight. It’s just that I’m more in control of the violence backstage! Rim-shot! Just kidding. Truth is I hate memorizing lines. But don’t tell my current director that. Oh, did I tell you, I’m going to be in the nowtraditional Rivercity Players’ Christmas pantomime? This year we’re producing Aladdin. I play a villain. I’m back to the
violence, it would appear. No I’m not! It’s a family show and it will play at the Tidemark Dec. 28-31. The point of all this reminiscing is, after many years, Rivercity Players is now in control of its own destiny with the opening of its new performing studio. See the pictures and story on page 23. After years of dreaming of our own performance space, Rivercity Players was gifted a building and a group of dedicated volunteers have renovated into an excellent 80-seat performing space. The future looks bright for Campbell River’s oldest performing organization. Congratulations gang. If you want to get involved onstage or backstage, e-mail rivercityp@gmail.com. n Next up for Rivercity is Sin, Sex and the CIA running Oct. 16-27 at the Rivercity Stage (1080 Hemlock Street).

Oooh, the LNG excitement is indeed catching
TanyaGraham Graham Tanya Classifieds Classifieds
I must join your headline writer in expressing my brimming enthusiasm in welcoming a liquified natural gas plant to the Campbell River area. I just cannot wait for the clean air we have enjoyed since the mill at Elk Falls closed some years ago to come to an end.
It has really grated me that after all those many joyous years of cancercausing particulates, fisheries closures, forest destruction and that delicious stench, that we have had to endure clean air, good health and a bright future since the pulp mill ceased operations. So Alleluia! Quicksil-
ver Resources is riding to the rescue! At last we can return to the offensive death-dealing odours of our youth. Once more PCBs will flow in our waters and the confusion of shellfish closures so close to pristine waters, will be banished as the pollutants once more pour into Discovery Passage.
And yeah! Not only will we have our own air, water and land contaminated but the ‘natural’ gas piped by the cubic mile to our doorstep will come from fracking in northeast B.C. So we can share in the happiness of groundwater contamination, carcinogen leaks and green-
house gas emissions with our northern brothers and sisters. To say nothing of the triple-dip our Asian cousins will provide us once they burn the stuff and it wafts back across the Pacific. Oh the rapture. Now as if this wasn’t exciting enough, we will have massive float-
ing bombs passing right through our neighbourhoods. Great ocean-going vessels carrying over 200,000 cubic meters of LNG could cause an explosion that would make Lac Megantic look like a backyard firecracker. My pulse is already racing at the very thought.
Isn’t it thrilling that a few hundred people out of a regional community of around 40,000 turned out to embrace this nightmare, a plan to foist another half century of polluting industry in the name of holy jobs, upon us all. Excitedly Philip Stone Quadra Island

than scientific research. Prov i n c i a l bi o l o gists have determined through a variety of methods that the province has a healthy grizzly bear population and accordingly have allocated a harvest quota controlled by a limitedentry hunting draw that
ensures only a very small number of bears are harvested each year in proportion to their total population Some studies have even shown that the harvest of mature males can actually increase the population as mature males will seek out and kill cubs in
the spring in order to breed the females. It is unfortunate that the media tries to sensationalize events rather than adhering to accurate investigative reporting. Had they done that, they should have reported that this hunter took a mature male bear,
under legal hunting authority and that the bear’s head, shown in the widely circulated photo, was in fact, fully attached to the rest of the hide and the feet. The hunt was also conducted with the knowledge and support of at least one or more of the
First Nation’s individuals living in the area. Theodore Roosevelt said it best: “In a civilized and cultivated country, wild animals continue to exist at all when preserved by sportsmen. Then excellent people who protest against all hunting and consider
sportsmen as enemies of wildlife are ignorant of the fact that in reality, the genuine sportsman is by all odds the most important factor in keeping the larger and more valuable wild creatures from total extermination.” John Todd Campbell River
Walt Disney’s view of wildlife more acceptable than science’s nature can no longer take its own course. We now must try and manage our environment and wildlife; not an easy task. Unfortunately, Walt Disney’s portrayal of wildlife is more accepted by many individuals

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Pat Stright was always willing to help out on guard duties while her hubby Larry was busy policing small communities. In places like Crystal City and Falcon lake, both in Manitoba, Stright was regularly called upon to search the female prisoners brought into the detachments and to act as matron to the girls behind bars. Marjorie Sutherland was also a supportive partner to her husband Dave during their RCMP posting in Beaver Creek, Yukon, from 1978-1981. She enjoyed taking part in the community, baked cookies for the children, and provided invaluable assistance to a couple involved in a horrific accident. Their guys are now
retired from the Mounties after their final postings in Campbell River where Larry Stright was the last inspector in charge of the detachment while Dave Sutherland served the community as a constable. However, last Saturday, the wives of the two former officers were honoured for their contributions to the RCMP with the Second Man Award. The ladies, along with fellow recipients from Vancouver Island, were presented with certificates and pins by Chief Superintendent Randy Wilson at the Nanaimo Golf and Country Club. In addition to her unofficial guard duties, Pat Stright answered phone calls, took complaints and radioed the officers when the bank alarm went off next to the police detachment which also had living quarters. In 1990, at Portage la Prairie, Pat and Larry were out for a walk on their own time when they saw a cyclist hit by a car. As Larry pursued the driver, Pat provided
medical assistance to the victim and later received a letter of appreciation from the commanding officer of “D” Division. During their time in the Yukon, the Sutherlands spent a threeweek period in the First Nations community of Pelly Crossing. During their brief time there, Marjorie made many friends and baked cookies for the children. Another time, she provided much-needed assistance to a California couple who were involved in a head-on accident in the Yukon and then airlifted to Fairbanks, Alaska. Marjorie provided me dica l assist ance, looked after their belongings and then shipped everything back to the couple’s home. That year, just before Christmas, Marjorie received a basket of fruit from the couple and a cheque to reimburse her. The RCMP started handing out the Second Man Award in 2010. There are 468 recipients across Canada and 130 residing in B.C.

Campbell River to get a charge out of electrician workshop Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Nearly one hundred
employees from airports across Canada will be descending on Campbell River for training next
week. For the first time in 18 years, the Canadian Airports Electrical Asso-
strathcona regional MEND 3X5.5”
ciation is straying from hosting its annual Canadian Airports Electrical Workshop (CANEW) at one of the country’s major international airports. “Campbell River’s the smallest city to host it and Campbell River Airport is definitely the smallest airport to ever host it,” said Murray Ames, an airport electrician at the Campbell River Airport. Ames is also the treasurer of the Canadian Airports Electrical Association and he has been trying to convince the
other directors since 2006 that Campbell River could pull off playing host. With the unprecedented help of the local business community to host the workshop, as well as a $5,000 donation from the city and the support of the airport and Campbell River Airport Authority, the association was convinced. It will be sending nearly 100 delegates from airports across Canada to Painter’s Lodge for the training workshop which runs from Sept. 22-27 as well as a trade show at

the Community Centre next Wednesday. A spousal program will see 26 significant others (the largest ever turnout) touring around Campbell River. Ames said the workshop will also include two hands-on training days at the Campbell River Airport. The event kicks off with a fishing derby on Sunday and winds up with the unveiling of the airport’s brand-new airfield lighting training centre. “We basically built a miniature airport that’s fully functioning for airfield lighting training,” Ames said. “The training centre is the only one of its kind in Canada and our hope is in the future, we’ll put airfield lighting training on and have people from airports across Canada come.” But in the meantime, Ames is focused on next week’s training session for airport electrical employees. He said one of the major benefits of the workshop is in the contacts that are established. He said because the job of an airport electrician is so specialized, it’s
a huge benefit, especially for workers at the smaller airports, to have someone they can call up and ask for assistance. The workshop also helps create contacts when dealing with emergency repairs. Ames said that in smaller airports there isn’t enough space to store every part and having someone to call to ship the pieces from airport to airport is essential. Lastly, the trade show connects airports with manufacturers, which, when ordering directly from the manufacturer cuts down on the costs of ordering from two or three suppliers, each with mark-ups. “The savings from a single purchase has more than covered the cost of attendance at the workshop,” Ames said. The Canadian Airports Electrical Association was formed as a nonprofit by airport electrical staff across the country 18 years ago to fill a void when Transport Canada sold its airports. Up until then, Transport Canada ran similar workshops tailored to airport electrical staff.

Arelene Lihala (left) and Jennifer Olsen embarked on their Bike for the Children tour from Spirit Square to Victoria Aug. 3-4.
Arelene Lihala and Jennifer Olsen embarked on a Bike For The Children tour from Spirit Square in Campbell River to Victoria Inner Harbour, on Aug. 3 and 4. They had committed to training their bodies and mind to master biking 265 km. For The Children at Chikondi One Heart Angels Orphanage. The goal is to raise $8,000 for food, health care, education and is urgently needed for their healthy growth is our focus. The day arrived and the duo was feeling very excited to master their goal, pushing their bodies to the limit. They arrived at Spirit Square at 7 a.m., their bikes were tuned up, pictures were taken, off they went, waving good bye, thinking of the children. Riding along the ocean on the old Island Highway hearing the waves hit the beach and enjoy-
ing the view was beautiful and amazing, Lihala said. The weather was very hot, so they had to keep hydrated. The first day they biked from Campbell River to Nanaimo – 150 km. They made it to the halfway mark, stopping for food and sleep. They were up early the next morning, legs feeling a little sore but they ate a healthy breakfast and kept going on their journey. Leaving Nanaimo at 9 a.m., their goal was to bike 115 km. and reach Victoria. The first hill was very steep requiring their concentration to be laser sharp. They notice now a lot of traffic and felt happy they have two pilot cars, one in the front and back. “Wow, I am now pushing my body to the max, feeling the rhythm of movement and I am one with the bike,” Lihala recalls. “My adrenaline is pumping threw my body and biking faster...almost
Gain a better understanding of schizophrenia
Can you imagine going about your daily life while voices in your head are constantly talking to you? They may be telling you to do destroy things, or hurt people or saying things like you’re unworthy, you’re dirty. Or they could be telling you are the most wonderful person in the world and you are going to be a great leader. This is just very small sample of what people with schizophrenia can experience. If you have a loved one or work with people with mental illnesses you can gain a better understanding of what they are going through by attending the “Hearing Distressing Voices” workshop, Wed., Oct. 9, 1-4:30 p.m. at the Maritime Heritage Centre (MHC). Workshop participants listen to a CD of sounds and words written and performed by people with schizophrenia while trying to accomplish a variety of tasks.

I arrive at the Parliament Buildings in Victoria there are thousands of people to celebrate BC Day, it was breathtaking and I feel so proud standing on the grass knowing that I master the goal to bike 265 km. “What I know for sure is the feeling of achieving the goal makes my heart feel so much love and joy For The Children.” They raised $3,500 and they are still working toward their goal of $8,000. Committee a chance for youths to put up or shut up You’re young, and you’ve got the energy and ideas to make Campbell River an even better place. Join your peers, and tell the city what matters to you. The City of Campbell River’s Youth Action Committee is looking for open-minded, innovative and motivated youth (14 to 18 years old) who want their say on community issues. The Youth Action Committee provides city staff and council a youth perspective on community issues like art, recre-
ation, safety, transportation, culture, parks and the environment. Last year, the Youth Ac t i o n C o m m i t t e e (YAC) developed a Youth Engagement Strategy to provide the city with guidelines to involve youth in city projects. The strategy was adopted by council in June 2013 and commits the city to seek the opinion of youth on all projects and plans that have a public outreach component. Other big projects involving YAC included ideas for revitalization of Campbellton and a
Youth Centre for Campbell River. For the past two years, the Youth Action Committee has raised funds at the annual Earth Week Film Festival to contribute to community organizations, as well as a $500 bursary for a graduating School District 72 student with an interest in the environment. Last year’s bursary was awarded to Jacob Storback, a Carihi graduate who will study chemistry at Simon Fraser University. “I plan to include environmental chemistry in
my time table and I am most grateful for the support,” Storback says. This year, YAC will help organize the Earth Week Film Festival, and will provide input on transportation improvements such as transit scheduling, bike rack locations, bike paths, and improved pedestrian routes. The committee will also provide input on local food initiatives, review park and recreation projects and much more. “Being a part of YAC taught me a lot about speaking up and being
MANAGING YOUR MONEY Gift or loan4X10 – protect your child’s inheritance You want your children to benefit equitably from your estate – and you want your legacy plan to include distribution methods that minimize taxes and fees while passing on maximum value to your beneficiaries. There are four basic estate distribution methods to choose from and each has advantages and disadvantages:

formalize any financial transactions with your child. A formal ‘promissory note’ proves that your child received ‘borrowed money’ and can help to protect the amount of the ‘loan’ or anything purchased with it (such as a home or property) from creditors or in the event of a marriage breakdown by assuring the amount of the loan must be repaid to you before your child’s assets are attached or split.

Each of these options requires careful consideration but let’s look inside the ‘gifting option’ because it could lead to an unintended reduction in your child’s inheritance.
‘gifting’ an asset to your child, you decide to provide money they can use now to help with buying a home or for any other reason, or as an advance loan on their future inheritance. In your will, you should clearly state how you wish that ‘loan’ to be treated at the time of your death: Forgive it, demand repayment, or have the amount of the loan deducted from that child’s share of your estate.
You want your legacy to be left exactly as you wish – that’s why you should take the time to talk with your lawyer or professional advisor.
If your choice is to reduce your child’s share of your Sandra estate by the amount of the ‘loan’, you must keep careful Allen records of the amount(s) CFP, TEP you provided to your child. able to successfully prove a point. It also gave me many opportunities to make change for youth in the community. Anyone interested in sharing those same opportunities should highly consider joining the youth action committee,” says Claire Billings, co-chair of last year’s Youth Action Committee. “The Youth Action Committee is a fun way to get involved in the community. It gives youth a say in City projects and decisions that inevitably mean our future as adults in Campbell River,” adds committee member Maneesha Bains. “I’ve gotten a chance to really be a part of the community and have had opportunities I never would have before. I’ve also met new people and learned about the types of jobs involved with working with the City.” Another bonus: YAC

DEATHS
LATOSKI, Darren Todd September 7, 2013
:PVS $PNNVOJUZ :PVS $MBTTJmFET
It is with a sense of overwhelming sadness and incredible pride that we must advise of the loss of Darren Latoski, who passed away on September 7, 2013 at the age of 44 in Vancouver, B.C. There are not enough words to describe Darren - he was a loyal partner, a loving father, a doting son and a formidable businessman. After being diagnosed in September 2012, Darren fought his cancer the same way he lived his life - with tenacity, determination, integrity and dignity. Darren focused on living life to the fullest and enjoying every day, no matter what obstacles were thrown his way. In his personal life as in business, he never gave up and was never one to listen to or accept the word "NO". Darren was fiercely proud of his family and his corporate legacy. He co-founded Sunstone Realty Advisors with his business partner Steve Evans in 2003, and at the time of his passing oversaw $350 million in real estate across North America. In 2006, Darren founded WesternOne Inc. (formerly WesternOne Equity Income Fund) and launched its Initial Public Offering. As CEO, Darren guided the company to where it is today - a multinational company that grew from $6.6 million in revenues to over $221 million. In 2007, Darren and Steve co-founded Pure Industrial Real Estate Trust, a small industrial REIT which at the time was the only one of its kind in Canada and which has successfully grown to more than $1.3 billion in assets over the last few years. The most recent brainchild of Darren and Steve is Pure Multi-Family REIT LP, which was launched in July 2012 and has grown to over $324 million in real estate assets in the United States. To his colleagues, Darren was a mentor, boss, leader, friend and partner - forever challenging us to do better, to take risks, to own our mistakes. He taught us the importance of a well-timed oneliner, the all-caps email, integrity and, most importantly, the joy of working hard while remembering what is really important in life. He led by example. To his family, Darren was so much more. His wife Cyndi would like people to remember him as a very witty, loving and caring partner and friend. He was a proud and devoted father to their three children, Kate, Ella and Noah, and they were the centre of his world. Darren was also a dedicated and devoted son to Lynn and Terry Latoski of Campbell River, B.C. He was a man who turned dreams into reality and he achieved all that he aspired to do. Cyndi and the children would like to express their sincere thanks to all those who have helped them over the past year. There are too many to thank everyone individually, but Kelly has been an unwavering source of comfort and stability, and to Dr. Sasha Smiljanic and his entire team at Lions Gate Hospital, thank you for your support over the past year and for all that you have done to help Darren and his family. The family will be forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support received by Darren's enormous group of friends, family and colleagues. For those family and friends who would like to further Darren's legacy, Darren and Cyndi have established The Latoski Family Foundation to help young families, like theirs, deal with the overwhelming financial burden of the drugs and services related to battling this terrible disease. The family hopes that the Foundation can ease the financial stress for as many families as possible so they may focus on healing and helping their loved one. To support the Foundation, please visit any branch of HSBC Bank Canada and reference The Latoski Family Foundation or send donations care of Sunstone, 910-925 W Georgia St. Vancouver BC V6C 3L2 and reference The Latoski Family Foundation. In addition, in recognition of the tremendous work and support of Laura and the chemotherapy nurses at Lions Gate Hospital, the family would like to encourage donations in Darren's memory to the LGH Chemotherapy Clinic Social/Education Fund. Please send any donations to the Bank of Nova Scotia, 1357 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver, BC V7M 2H7. A memorial for Darren will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 2 p.m. at The Sutton Place Hotel, Versailles Ballroom and Foyer, located at 845 Burrand Street, Vancouver, B.C. Darren will be greatly missed by all who knew him and the world will seem emptier without his presence.

ampbell River’s community theatre group raised the curtain Saturday on its re-vamped headquarters. Rivercity Players welcomed the public to an open house, which included a ribbon cutting and tours of the premises by Rivercity members. The extensive renovations were showcased in a short video created by Rivercity’s Sandra Chow. Renovations began in January and are still in a
sense, on-going. The studio, named in honour of the late Michelle Nelson Woodrow – Rivercity’s former landlord who donated the building at 1080 Hemlock to the group – has undergone renovations to the stage and there is new sound equipment at the back of the studio. The viewing area also has seats new to Rivercity, which came from Victoria and the aisles have almost been doubled in width in order to
bring the building up to code as a performance venue. Rivercity plans to hold its next show, a comedy called Sin, Sex and the CIA, in the newly renovated theatre but is waiting for its final building inspection which is expected to happen within the next couple of weeks. Off to the sides of the performance area, a few new rooms have been added – including a room for construction. Walls in the back rooms have been built

and existing ones upgraded so that they are all fireproof. Rivercity is also hoping to make changes to the front end of the building, including adding an office space and a ticket booth which would open up onto
Hemlock Street. John Godfrey, a member of Rivercity, said future improvements are expected to be complete within a year. Saturday’s open house gave the public a chance to see Rivercity’s hard work and its ultimate vision.
