Erin Haluschak Black Press Gil DiCesare has heard his share of fish stories, but he now has one to pass along — and the evidence to prove it. During a routine fishing charter off the west coast of the Island near Ucluelet, DiCesare, the owner of Comox Valley-based G&M Charters, was cleaning a fish for his client when something inside the 14-pound salmon cut his finger. “I felt something sharp when I put my knife through my glove to my finger. I looked at the stomach and could see the outline of something with notches. It was bizarre,” he explained. Inside, DiCesare found a fillet knife — similar to the one he was using — inside. “I couldn’t believe it. I actually took a video and some pictures or else no one would believe me,” he added. DiCesare, who has been guiding for more than 25 years, believes it most likely fell off the boat of someone fishing in the

Photo submitted. area. “I’ve seen halibut with half a beer can or Styrofoam, and the commercial guys have seen a lot, but nothing like this.” The knife was fully intact when DiCesare removed it from the belly, and the fish was otherwise healthy. DiCesare’s client kept the fish, and he kept the knife. He said during that particular fishing trip in late July, the odds were definitely in his favour. “First, what are the odds of a salmon eating the knife and surviving? And then out of the millions of fish there, what are the odds of actually catching it?” DiCesare added if anyone is looking for a missing knife, to give him a call.

The pink salmon are getting dark and the fishing pools where anglers have been gathering have certainly thinned out. I had a chance to fish the old aspen pool on the Campbell River and the pinks were still taking the pink flies. I will be changing it up in the following days and changing Pink Salmon caught Sept. 14 to blue or green flies in hopes of catching a Coho. Water levels will start to rise in weeks to come and my fishing destination will change to Salmon Point and fish the beaches between Salmon Point and the Oyster River. The Tyee fishing has been superb in the Tyee pool and the season has closed as of the 15th. I will be hosting the Roberts Lake family fun fishing derby this Saturday with Lorna Duncan. This derby starts at dawn and wraps up with the prizes awarded at 5 pm. Last year a number of fish were r Rive ll pbe Cam of th Roberts Lake nor caught in the 1 to 2 pound range and a few big ones were lost. Free hot dogs and lemonade will be provided to anglers who come out and participate. B.C. Parks and the Campbell River Environmental Committee needs your help in cleaning up the shoreline of the Quinsam and Campbell River on Sunday September 22nd from 10 am to 2 pm.
