County faces Elections Alberta inquiry Reeve dismisses Wildrose complaint as ‘a silly little thing’ RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter More than 16 months after the provincial election, the County of Stettler is being probed because one of its administrative employees is accused of violating electionfinancing laws to promote the local Progressive Conservative candidate, former county councillor and provincial cabinet minister Jack Hayden. Drumheller-Stettler MLA Rick Strankman confirmed that the Wildrose Caucus Research Team obtained approval from Information and Protection of Privacy that alleges that an employee in the county office might have used county time, along with a county email address and computer, to create a Facebook page to promote former Hayden, whom Strankman defeated in the April 2012 election. County Reeve Wayne Nixon admitted this week that director of communications Shawna Benson sent an email on county

time, which he said took “just a fraction” of a second. “It’s such a silly little thing and so frivolous,” Nixon said of the Wildrose party investigation. He said that if the Opposition wants to be effective, he suggested the Wildrose focus on “bigger and more serious issues” than the county correspondence. The evidence was forwarded to Elections Alberta, which is expected to determine whether a greater investigation or penalties are needed. The reeve said municipalities have to work with the government, regardless of the party in power. “Our council is very non-partisan,” Nixon claimed. He said the door is open for the Wildrose party to receive more information from the county, but he was frustrated with the lack of response from Strankman and the ongoing FOIP requests. “I want them to stop their frivolous FOIPing and get on with more-serious issues,

instead of the MLA going on a witch-hunt with his constituency,” Nixon said. While the reeve said he has sent letters and emails to Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith, and phoned her, she hasn’t responded, he said. Nixon also questioned Strankman’s actions. “He’s losing his credibility with me and he should be acting more like an MLA, and not the chairman of the witch-hunt committee.” Strankman, however, said he wasn’t directly involved with the probe. “I had no personal direction in the FOIPing process,” Strankman said. “I have no personal vendetta.” He said there’s no need for personal meetings or visits to the county office to discuss a matter that’s now in the hands of Elections Alberta. The FOIP request for information about the month of the provincial election campaign found that the county’s director of communications sent out an email to promote Hayden.

“That’s what ensued the request,” Strankman said. “Are they abusing taxpayers’ money?” With several other names in the email blackened out, Strankman questioned whether other county staff or council members used county resources to promote Hayden. Municipal governments are prohibited from financially contributing to a provincial party. Violators would be required to pay back the financial contribution or face a fine of up to $10,000, decided by a provincial court judge, said Drew Westwater, director of communications for Elections Alberta. He said that privacy legislation prevents election staff from stating if an investigation will be launched. Generally, the results are posted online only if a violation occurs. News of the county investigation comes a month prior to the Oct. 21 municipal election. The reeve and all seven current councillors plan to run again. Nomination day is this coming Monday, Sept. 23.

Heat wave causes ‘typical harvest field fire’ RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter Near-record warm temperatures and dry conditions aided a grass fire in a farmer’s field just south of Stettler last Thursday afternoon. The blaze carried smoke into the town. “It was a typical harvest field fire,” said Stettler Fire Chief Mark Dennis. “We think it’s attributed to the harvest, as equipment probably hit a rock that caused a spark.” About two quarters of field was scorched west of Highway 56 and just north of Township Road 38-4 in the fire, which was called in at 1:46 p.m. Fire was under control within an hour, as several farmers and Future Ag and

Agro Stettler dealerships arrived with cultivators to create a firebreak. “That helped a lot,” Dennis said. This was the second grass fire in two days for Stettler Fire and Rescue, which extinguished a blaze the day before along Highway 56 near Ross Lake Road. While temperatures hit near-record 30 degrees last week, conditions remain dry. “We’re not putting a fire ban on yet, but it’s on the radar,” Dennis said. Much of that will depend on the weather, he said and Stettler county would place a ban if neighbouring counties in Paintearth or Camrose take the first step. However, he said such weather is typical in September and October. Eastern parts of Stettler county are typically drier than in the west. The fire chief advises people to be cautious when burning outdoors.

RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter Donalda will welcome Juno Awardwinning singer Gary Fjellgaard on Sunday, Sept. 29, to raise funds for Donalda Museum. It all happens at Donalda Community Hall. The evening starts with dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 7 o’clock with Fjellgaard and his longtime touring friends Saskia and Darrel under the new name of the Great Plains. “The museum works off of fundraising and donations to help keep it operating and this is our major fundraiser,” said Marlene Conibear, treasurer of the Donalda and District Museum Society. With reduced funding to hire stu-

dents for the summer and with limited volunteers, the society requires more funding to support the museum, she said. “Gary Fjellgaard is well-known and draws a lot of people from outside the area.” The popular performers welcome the return to Donalda. “We were in Donalda and Stettler over a period of four years,” Saskia said. “We did a benefit for the museum in Donalda which was very successful plus a fundraiser for P&H elevator in Stettler. “For us the best part of this event is to bring a wonderful evening, pull a community together by a fundraiser and leave some funds behind — it is a win-win situation. “We especially love saving historic

buildings and preserving our heritage, as we have quite a few songs around the history of Canada, as well.” With fall on the horizon and a new touring season, the concert will feature Norwegian, Dutch and Metis combo, with songs about hard-working farmers, windswept lands and the romance and simplicity of rural living. “It will be a heart-warming evening of music merriment and mayhem as they enlighten with tales of cowboys, war brides, prairie towns and Louis Riel,” said a news release from organizers. Advance tickets for dinner and show are $35 per person and $20 per person for the show only and available at Donalda Museum until Sept. 25. ‘Newcomers’ throw hats into the local election ring RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter At least two newcomers are seeking seats for Stettler town council, while two former county councillors are hoping to get back in fold. Dave Goodwin has confirmed that he will seek one of two seats on the Clearview School Division for the Stettler ward. “Absolutely,” Goodwin said last week. Nomination day for municipal and school board seats is this Monday, with election day Oct. 21. “I think I have a lot to offer as a teacher and have a perspective from the classroom,” said Goodwin, a retired teacher. He said he would leave his privileges of substitute teaching, if he won election. “I know the board will have many difficult decisions in the next few years and I feel I can lend a fresh perspective,” Goodwin said.

“I am a very good compromiser and have plenty of experience on boards.” Will Brown plans to return to the ballot for the Town of Stettler as councillor this time, after falling short of winning the mayor’s seat three years ago. “I’d like to see the community grow and be a better place for families,” said Brown, the pastor of Stettler Community Church. “I feel I can bring a new and positive approach to council, and common sense.” He currently serves on the board of Stettler Public Library, the police advisory committee and Heartland Beautification Committee. Brown is passionate to draw more people to the downtown and develop and promote the community’s heritage and history. Two former County of Stettler councillors want to return to the table. Dave Grover will be back in the race in the Big Valley area, after losing in the last election. “I bring nine years experience back

to the table and I’m fairly outspoken,” Grover said. Roads are among his top priorities. “I would like to see the county build more roads,” Grover said. Les Stulberg plans to be on the ballot for Byemoor-Endiang. “I do plan on running,” said Stulberg, who served three years before he was unseated in the last election. “I feel I will be a strong voice for Byemoor-Endiang and I have been encouraged to run by many people. “I am proud of the many accomplishments made for the area during my term on council, but there is still lots that needs to be done. The ratepayers need someone who will hear their concerns and speak out on their behalf to get something done. I believe I can be an effective representative. I have always had a passion for serving the community and would be pleased to do so again if afforded the opportunity.” During his time on council, Stulberg represented the county on the County of Stettler Housing Authority.

Art of recognizing God’s assignments I don’t remember when, where, or who wrote it, but I recall reading that the three pillars of excellence are availability, affability and ability. As newlyweds, we consulted an insurance agent to provide us with quotes for a small life insurance policy. He was available and arrived right on time. His ability to explain and promote his product was first-rate. However, he slipped up dramatically on the middle pillar ... affability. Perhaps fearing that he had not made the sale (though I’d already decided to purchase), he began pressuring us and added a liberal dose of guilt, suggesting that my ability to provide for my family was questionable. I thanked him for coming, told him that we would sleep on it and showed him out. The following morning I phoned his company and told the receptionist that we were buying the policy, but that I wanted a different salesman. I was immediately transferred to another agent and in 15 minutes he had a sale and we had our policy. Let’s look at an example where someone employed all three of the pillars. Pastor Charles

Simeon (1759–1836) arrived early at a cemetery to do a funeral. As he walked around he noticed the following epitaph on one of the gravestones. “When from the dust of death, I rise, to claim my mansion in the skies, e’en then shall this be all my plea … Jesus hath lived and died for me.” The gospel message on that stone so impressed him that he began to pray that he might come across someone that he could share it with. Just then he noticed a young lady who seemed quite distraught. He called her over to read the words on the stone. It seemed to lift her

spirits somewhat and she provided him with her address and requested a pastoral visit. He visited her the next day and found himself in a home of poverty and squalor. The woman’s aged mother was dying and two unkempt little children, were trying in vain to warm themselves by a dwindling fire. Simeon prayed with them and through the benevolence of his church, was able to provide help for them. In subsequent visits the woman told Simeon that she had been in the cemetery, where he met her, contemplating suicide when he invited her to read the gravestone. In delightful contrast to her plans, the young lady accepted Christ as her Savior and the entire family situation was changed. Simeon was available, affable, and able...the result? Excellence! Excellence is recognizing that every circumstance is an assignment from God. “I pray, that ... you may approve the things that are excellent ... to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:9-11 abridged). Pastor Ross Helgeton is the senior pastor at Erskine Evangelical Free Church.

MONEY TALK

‘Turn those retirement dreams into your reality’ By Peter Boys “Don’t simply retire from something; have something to retire to.” That’s a profound statement by Harry Emerson Fosdick, who was regarded by Martin Luther King Jr. as the greatest preacher of the last century. With so many boomers retired or nearing retirement, his statement is especially relevant today. Having a successful retirement is much more than having enough money. It’s about being happy, fulfilled, and valued. Boomers moving into retirement are concerned about loss of social interactions, especially after leaving the formal work force. Many will continue to work or contribute in some way because they enjoy interacting with people. Many retirees have commented that they miss the social interactions they had at work, more than the lost income. How will you follow your dreams? Without a job to go to, you will have a lot of time to do other things. After having a coffee and reading the news, how will you spend the rest of your day? Some tell me they’ll golf or travel. Those activities may take up a couple of days a week, or a month out of a year, but what will you do the rest of the time? Will your ideas or priorities change over the years? Vacations can provide a sample of life after work and are a wonderful chance to put some thought and conversation into retirement. Think about what you want to do in this new phase of life. For example, will

you retire to a new career or a new hobby? Here are some other things you might want to consider: • Learn a new skill • Start a business • Continue working parttime at something you love to do • Do something adventurous • Spend more time with family and grandchildren • Get into better shape by biking, hiking, swimming • Volunteer It doesn’t take much effort to imagine what one wants to do once retired, and it can provide a great starting point for planning for the rest of your retirement. After my clients given some thought to retirement in general, I give them a more specific retirement lifestyle quiz to help clarify their retirement vision: • What does retirement mean to you? • Do you want to work during retirement or retire early? • What is your ideal vacation? • Do you plan to make any major purchases during retirement, like a cottage or luxury car? • Would you consider going back to school? • If you want to escape the cold winters and be a snowbird, how long would you live outside of Canada? Would you rent or buy? Another important question is, “What’s your biggest financial and emotional worry in retirement?” Research shows that many Canadians are concerned about paying for their lifestyle in retirement.

Province ‘fosters culture of entitlement’ The hiring of former Agriculture Minister Evan Berger immediately following last year’s provincial election brought to the surface more ethical quandaries for many Albertans. Berger failed to win his riding, but was subsequently rehired and the government went so far as to set up his office within view of the successful candidate, Wildrose MLA Pat Stier’s office. The Wildrose Official Opposition MLAs Shayne Saskiw and Jeff Wilson submitted changes to Alberta’s Conflict of Interest Act review committee last week in an attempt to eliminate the possibility of this kind of unethical hiring from reoccurring. In an attempt to strengthen the act and the Ethics Commissioner’s powers, Saskiw and Wilson who sit on the committee, submitted several other recommendations which include: — Allowing the Ethics Commissioner to initiate an investigation by requiring more clarity with respect to the rules governing the financial disclosure of MLAs. — More clearly outlining how the Commissioner reports and publishes the results of investigations that discover any violations under the act. — Broadening the language of what would constitute who would be included when defining people who are considered “associates” of an MLA, i.e., relatives and

From the Legislature MLA Report by Rick Strankman friends. — Toughening up the “cooling off” period for former ministers and political staff, moving re-employment by the government from a six-month waiting period to 12 months. These recommendations are similar to current regulations in place within the Canadian and B.C. governments. With seven of the eleven Conflict of Interest Act review committee members being from the government side of the house, it was no surprise that they voted to maintain the status quo. The changes included repealing subsection 24 (6), which effectively gags MLAs from speaking out on issues of ethical conduct in the Legislature. This decision reaffirms the 41-year culture of entitlement that continues to be fostered within the Alberta

government. Ethical scandals appear to be a serious problem throughout the province of Alberta and without serious changes to our laws that govern ethical behaviour, they will continue unabated. Justice Critic Shayne Saskiw commented on the proposed changes saying, “Albertans can be assured that the Wildrose is committed to running a clean, ethical and accountable government that plays by the rules.” “We know from the evidence that no matter who is in charge of the government party, it’s clear that this government is more interested in serving itself than doing the right thing,” Wilson added, obviously frustrated by the resistance to the proposed changes. Unfortunately, the unethical behaviour is not confined to the provincial level of government, in fact in some cases it has appeared even at board levels. The acceptance of unethical behaviour by our provincial government has become the yardstick for those involved to justify their own lack of ethics. The Wildrose caucus is committed to proposing changes to the rules that govern how MLAs and the government in Alberta conduct themselves. By eliminating the possibility of ethical breaches, we will create a more accountable and transparent government.

Good, bad and ugly in southwest Alberta A recent trip to Waterton Park in the southwest corner of the province brought to light some interesting observations not all of them positive. The park itself remains a stunning picture of immense geography and visceral beauty — but it’s the road to get there and the immediate vicinity that should be a cause of concern. It seems our bureaucrats and government politicians are rapidly letting a pristine area of the province become a victim of environmental trendiness and flawed conservation policies. First the good, a trip on an 86-year-old iconic lake passenger ship to some hiking trips on the USA side certainly was one of the highlights. On the ship were two American custom agents who were assigned to a curious U.S. border crossing station. The only way to get to their posts was to drive from the U.S. cross the border to Waterton and then take the lake trip to their post. Upon arrival in the U.S. they then checked our passports at this remote outpost. Not that it mattered as the boat was the only way out unless you were an ex-

treme backpacker. Canada Customs does not reciprocate on the return to Canada with no agents anywhere to be seen. It must be one of the few border spots where you can enter Canada without going through customs. One annoyance with this park and most other Mountain parks is the endless obsession with the well-being of the bear population. Trails and entire sections of parks are regularly closed whenever bears are sighted. God forbid we upset the daily routine of bears. I get the feeling that some park rangers get a perverse delight in thwarting the hiking plans of citizens by sealing off whole sections of parks so as not to disturb their precious bears. I have come to the point as to wonder of what use bears are to society that they need such over the top protection (oh I forgot they are cute and pretty!). Would we miss them if they were all gone? I think not. Wildlife zealots like to make tiresome statements that the bears were here first so we have to accommodate them, well saber-toothed tigers used to roam this area too, and

I would suggest no one regrets their demise. Enough said. Now the bad, part of the park and the immediate surrounding area are mostly rolling open grasslands. It was grazed for millennia by buffalo and lately by cattle, but evidently not enough. As with much of the foothill rangelands brush, noxious weeds and trees are infesting and taking over these traditional grazing lands. I note National Park policy likes to trumpet that it preserves the natural eco-system. I would suggest their do-nothing policy is causing the loss of natural rangelands everyday. No grazing or fire are permitted in the area with the result that in a few decades

there will no longer be natural rangelands within the park as it reverts to overgrown brush and trees. The Nature Conservancy of Canada group has acquired rangelands bordering the park in order to forestall any development. Their policy is maintain such land by at least continuing with cattle grazing. That area like much of the foothill country is in desperate need of substantial brush removal programs using fire, herbicides and more grazing. Finally the ugly, the road to Waterton includes passing through a virtual gauntlet of industrial windmill factory farms around Pincher Creek. They never seem to stop building these

subsidized eyesores that are just visual pollution and make a mockery of preserving the natural landscape of the area. Windmills are so politically-correct that not even the usual rabid green groups dare mention their viscous deadly impact on wildlife such as eagles and bats. These same groups go apoplectic if a few dozen ducks die in the oilsands, but they are shamefully silent when thousands of eagles and bats die annually in the death-dealing arms of windmills. It’s hard to say if it was a coincidence, but almost half the windmills were not operating as we passed by on the way to Waterton. That was after a recent heat wave, when power from windmills was most needed, most windmills in southern Alberta were becalmed. Power companies then had to scramble to buy expensive emergency electricity from B.C. to replace power from the motionless green wind giants. I would suggest that If there are any monuments to the folly of green energy it surely has to be windmills.

Family formula strives to keep taxes low All across our large riding, families are adjusting to the new daily routines of going back to school. I have been spending a great deal of time reviewing the details of the efforts our Conservative government has made to be of assistance to hard- working Canadians raising their families. Safeguarding financial prosperity starts with strong Canadian families. Our government is determined to continue to keep taxes low for Canadian families. The facts and figures show clearly that the average family of four now receives more than $3,200 in extra tax savings, and the federal tax burden for all Canadians is now the lowest it has been in half a

century. The Children’s Arts and Fitness Tax Credits are truly helping Canadian families. These tax credits also work as incentives to get our youngest generation enrolled in various arts and fitness programs. Families can claim a 15 per cent non-refundable tax credit on an amount up to $500 per child per credit on their income tax and benefit returns. According to the 2012 Tax Expenditures and Evaluations publication, the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit provided an estimated $120 million to hard-working families in 2012 alone. Our First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit is a big help to families and helps make the transition into

home ownership more affordable. Taxpayers who bought their first home this year might be eligible to claim a 15 per cent nonrefundable tax credit on an amount of $5,000 on their income tax and benefit return. In its first two years alone, more than 550,000 Canadians claimed the First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit, which resulted in more than $2.5 billion claimed.

The Family Caregiver Tax Credit helps Canadians cope with added responsibilities of caring for disabled or ill parents or relatives. It provides a 15 per cent non-refundable tax credit on an amount of $2,040 to caregivers of dependent relatives. And finally, the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) allows Canadians aged 18 or over to set money aside tax-free. Each calendar

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Labour Day weekend too busy for rodeo to run without a hitch Dear Editor: In the Sept. 4 story in the Stettler Independent, Stettler Steel Wheel Stampede organizers said nothing else was going on in the area at the end of August, so the committee chose the Labour Day weekend for the stampede. There have been slo-pitch ball tournaments at Content Bridge on the Labour Day weekend for many years, and another tournament at Gadsby for a lot of years. The committee could have checked other places to

year, we can contribute up to $5,500 to our TFSA. All income earned in and withdrawals from a TFSA are generally taxfree. By the end of 2012, more than 9 million Canadians had opened a TFSA, and half of those TFSAs were held by Canadians with an income of less than $40,000. As your member of Parliament, I take every opportunity to encourage everyone in our Crowfoot riding to open a TFSA, if possible, and make sure the members of your family have a TFSA. TFSAs have become increasingly popular, with more than 9 million Canadians having opened an account and about 2.5 million Canadians contributing the

maximum in 2011. I encourage all Canadian families to visit the Canada Revenue Agency website at cra.gc.ca for more information about these programs and other tax savings for which they might be eligible. Remember, save your receipts for 2013, because you might be eligible to claim these credits on your income tax and benefit return when you file your taxes in 2014. Anyone who has questions for Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson is invited to write him at 4945-50 Street, Camrose, AB, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780-608-4603 or email Kevin.Sorenson.c1@parl. gc.ca.

determine possible schedule conflicts. Also, the rodeo season is virtually finished by the Labour Day weekend. A lot of competitors have gone back home and are finished for the season. The third snag is that the Labour Day weekend is the last long weekend of the summer for campers, and a lot of them headed to the lakes and parks. Bernice Chavis, Stettler

With the warm weather winding down, canine caretakers can take in the second annual Stettler Dog Days of Summer this Saturday at West Stettler Park. “This is an outdoor event to celebrate dogs and pets in the Stettler area and to promote responsible pet ownership,” said Kevin Duval, Town of Stettler municipal enforcement officer with Alberta Animal Services. The group co-hosts the event with Animal Haven Rescue. “We are excited to have this event take place once again and we hope to see even more people and doges this year,” Duval said. A barbecue, guest speakers, a micro-chip clinic, raffles, prizes for best-dressed dogs and best tricks are featured at the event. 2. THE FAMILY SCHEDULE: in October, the children are settled into their school routines and Christmas preparations are not yet on your agenda. It’s a great time to renovate the bathroom! 3. LABOUR: In great demand — even in short supply — during the summer months, construction professionals usually have plenty of time to give you once fall arrives. No more interminable waiting for the roofer and the carpenter to stop by, as they now have plenty of openings in their schedules. 4. PEACE AND QUIET: fall is the ideal time to do home renovations, because the children are at school, at daycare, or visiting friends. It’s not like in the summer, when they are constantly demanding your attention. 5. THE ADVENTURE: before November gloom settles in, what better time to do some interesting jobs outside, where you can be inspired by the beauty of the season as you fix up the garden shed, level the deck or patio, or build a garage. 6. FRESH AIR: October is still a good time to open windows and doors. This is ideal for carrying out inside work that requires good ventilation, such as applying a new coat of paint in the living room or sanding and varnishing the floor. 7. SAVE MONEY: now is the time to make your home more energy efficient, before winter keeps you inside. You’ll save lots of money, especially where heating and electricity costs are concerned.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL REPORT

‘Try your best … and don’t cry’ By Amore du Toit Stettler Elementary School School is off to a great start! Students are following teachers’ lead to become great leaders in our community. As teachers we agree that leadership is unlocking students’ potential to become better than you are at present. Kindergarteners followed Pete the cat as he danced his way into a new school year. Kindergarten students have had so much fun this past week. They have been meeting all their new Letterland friends. They also met Pete the Cat, who told them — “Do not worry! Keep rocking in your school shoes.” Students loved this

book and enjoyed Pete’s philosophy of: “Try your best — don’t cry and know it is all good.” Grade 5 students in Mrs. Fox’s class celebrated their own uniqueness this past week in art class. They started work on their selfportraits. Students learned about facial proportions

and used mirrors to draw their own unique features. They will be up at Open House and we’ll see if parents can find their children. Grade 5 classes also have chosen milk monitors for the year. A new leadership position for grade 5 students is stocking paper in the

teacher work rooms. Students have been chosen from each classroom to help with this job. This week grade fives from Mrs. Anderson’s class made a list of classroom expectations, which we will use to create our classroom mission statement. They also started practicing some Word Work routines and started work on their first Smart Learning story of the year. We have selected leaders for various jobs in our classroom and in our school. Several Grade 5 students volunteered to help our little kindergarten buddies during recess. It is great to see what wonderful leaders the older students are as they assist the little ones. Some four students of Mrs. Chapman and Bruketa are using their leadership skills to water and care for the trees in the new playground area. The cross-country club is enjoying their practices. They are excited for their meet next week. Our students are sure off to a great start of the year and in the words of Dr. Seuss we head into a great year. “You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So ... get on your way!”

Local Lutheran congregation to mark church’s 100 years of faith RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter One of Stettler’s oldest churches, St. Peter Lutheran Church, marks 100 years of Lutheran faith in the region with a special service on Sunday, Sept. 29. “We are celebrating 50 years for this church and 100 years of Lutheran churches in the area,” said Penny Tash, one of the organizers. Several pastors from the past will return for the service, which starts at 1:30 p.m., followed by a time of fellowship. “It will be a time to celebrate history with words and music,” said Tash, who has been part of the church for 40 years. Alfred Erichsen is writing a history book, “Stettler Lutheran Pioneers and Their Churches.” With an average of 100 in the Sunday worship service, the congregation has about 260 baptized members and 190 confirmed members. “It’s a very loving and caring congregation, open to new ideas, and lots of people help in so many ways,” said Karl Faltin, pastor for the past 19 years. “They are very interested in growing in their faith and spiritual life.” After major renovations three years ago, the building provides ample space for various ministries, such as Sunday school, confirmation classes, an active women’s group, a youth group that has partnered with Erskine Evangelical Free Church, and a fellowship room for banquets and receptions. Over the decades, the congregation has seen many transitions. “We’ve seen many changes in the Lutheran tradition, with more people involved in the worship service, and we’ve held on to the Lutheran principles,” Tash said. “Women never used to serve communion, and now we do and it’s nice.” With pews to seat 200 people, the sanctuary has become renowned for the acoustics and the century-old pipe organ. “Choirs and music groups love to sing here because the acoustics are great,” Tash said. A 1890 pipe organ that was headed for the scrap heap was rescued and revived. “It’s a nice feature to the church,” Tash said. Another longtime members values the congregation at the Stettler church. “It’s my church family, so its important in my life,” said Al Leinweber, part of the church for 50 years.

We must convey a special thank you to our talented instructors Nora and Barb for sharing their knowledge and to Cindy for arranging such an interesting evening. We’ve had such positive feedback about this event that more “Zentagles” evenings are soon to be in the works.

ENDIANG/BYEMOOR NEWS By Les and Rosemary Stulberg Jim and Leanne Sorensen have a relative visiting from Denmark. Gurli Salomonsen arrived last Tuesday to spend some time with the Sorensens. The Endmoor Minor Hockey Association is looking for referees for the upcoming hockey season. The organization is willing to pay the costs for community members to attend an officiating clinic. There are five mi-

nor hockey teams playing out of the Endmoor Arena this year so there will be a need for several referees. Referees must be 13 years of age and older. It is a good way to earn some extra cash on weekends. For more information contact Rhonda Hutton at 403579-2135 or Jaryl Walker at 403-579-2199. We extend sympathy to Rob and Sherry Carlgren and family on the passing of Sherry’s mother Maria Dyck at Stettler on Sept. 2. Our thoughts are with

the Carlgren family in their loss. Some local women took advantage of the beautiful fall weather to take a leisurely float down the Red Deer River last Wednesday. Janet Campbell, Shannon Knowles, Rhonda Munns, Lynne Nixon and Maureen Wasdal floated from Trenville Park to McKenzie Crossing. Family and friends of Jonathan Raessler attended a 40th birthday party in his honour on Satur-

day. The special occasion was celebrated at the farm home of his mother Dellas Raessler at Delia. Jonathan is the youngest in the Raessler family. Anyone interested in purchasing a community calendar — they are available at the Byemoor Store. The calendars are a fund-raising project for the school. The students of the Byemoor School held their Terry Fox Run on Friday. On Tuesday the school

Wildcats limit mistakes to beat Trojans Stettler hosts division-contender Wetaskiwin in home-opener Friday JOHN MACNEIL Independent editor Less mistakes. More rewards. That was the case Friday night for the Stettler Wildcats, who won their first game in two starts this season, beating the host Camrose Trojans 24-17 in Central Alberta High School Football League action under the lights. “It was a good win for us,” said Norbert Baharally, coach of the 1-1 Wildcats. “It came at a good time right now. “Certainly, both teams weren’t polished, but we were able to capitalize on some of their mistakes. And they did on ours, too. The interception that happened, (the Trojans) marched it in pretty quick. So they’re all right, too. “It was a good game. It was a pretty evenly matched team. They had some good ball players that played spring football, as well, and a lot of their coaching staff coached up there with the Battle River Shock, as well.” Baharally is part of the Shock coaching staff and a handful of the Wildcats play with that Camrose-based midget team in the spring season. After losing their season-opener to the mighty Hunting Hills Lightning of Red Deer, the Wildcats got off to a strong start against Camrose. They led 14-2 at halftime. “We had an early lead,” Baharally reported. “We played well on offence, moving the ball, and took advantage of some of their mistakes. We were able to turn that into a touchdown or two early in the game. “But then, really, it just kind of went back and forth for a little bit. And their two scores came as a result of (turnovers) — one of them was just a deflection off our receiver’s hands and into their hands. They ran it back pretty close to the end zone and punched it in the next couple of plays. The other major touchdown that they scored on us was a big pass right toward the end of the game, with about 30 seconds left, when we had some of our new guys in the lineup.” As for the Wildcats, the veterans stepped up to account for all of the scoring. Stephen Zuk had two quarterback sneaks for touchdowns. Nicholas Baharally caught

Stettler quarterback Stephen Zuk makes one of his two touchdown leaps during the Wildcats’ 24-17 victory over the host Camrose Trojans in Central Alberta High School Football League action last Friday night. The Wildcats are 1-1. one touchdown pass on a catch-and-run. Frank van Ommeren converted all three Wildcat touchdowns and kicked about a 40-yard field goal. “It was a good distance — a nice kick,” said coach Baharally. “(The Trojans) scored their points on a safety, a two-point conversion and their two touchdowns.” The second week of the season gave the Wildcats a chance to gain more players and

integrate them into game action. “It’s still early,” Baharally said. “I don’t think we’re getting used to each other yet. “The team that makes the least amount of mistakes right now is going to be the one — if you’re able to capitalize — that might come out on top.” This Friday at 4:30 p.m., the Wildcats host the Wetaskiwin Sabres. “This one will be a tough one for us,” Baharally said. “Wetaskiwin will be good.

They’re 1-1 as well in our division. Whoever comes out of this will have maybe the front-runner (label) for this division, but we’ll see.” Stettler and Wetaskiwin are in a division with Camrose, Ponoka and West Central of Rocky Mountain House. Lacombe and Sylvan Lake play in the other division with the three Red Deer schools — Hunting Hills, Lindsay Thurber and Notre Dame.

Rebels’ Dieno warms up for WHL season with hat trick in Stettler, NHL rookie stint JOHN MACNEIL Independent editor

JOHN MacNEIL/Independent editor

Minnesota Wild prospect Rhyse Dieno scored three goals last Saturday night to help the Red Deer Rebels defeat the Medicine Hat Tigers 8-5 in Western Hockey League pre-season play at Stettler Recreation Centre.

Fall Service Special

Is it Friday yet? Red Deer Rebels forward Rhyse Dieno wasn’t necessarily crooning Gord Bamford’s popular country song this week, but he meant as much. “Friday,” Dieno simply tweeted Monday in anticipation of the Rebels’ season-opening game against the Kootenay Ice this Friday night at Cranbook, B.C. “I can’t wait,” said Dieno, the Rebels’ story of the year last season. The Rebels and Ice face each other again Saturday night at the Centrium in Red Deer. Dieno scored a hat trick last Saturday night at the Stettler Recreation Centre as the Rebels defeated his former team, the Medicine Hat Tigers, 8-5 in their final Western Hockey League pre-season game. “The puck seemed to be finding my stick there,” said the 20-yearold winger. “It was a good line, with (Brooks) Maxwell and (rookie Grayson) Pawlenchuk, who’s a really good player.

“It was just good that with a young guy on our line like that, we were clicking. Guys were making some good plays, and we had some secondary scoring, which is great. (Conner) Bleackley is playing really good right now. “Definitely, to get a win against any of your old teams is nice.” Dieno also picked an assist in Red Deer’s 7-5 comeback win over the Edmonton Oil Kings last Friday at Lacombe. A few days earlier, Dieno returned from his first NHL rookie camp stint with the Minnesota Wild. He played in two NHL rookie tournament games at Traverse City, Mich. Dieno earned that amateur tryout after making strides at Minnesota’s development camp in July. “I went down to Traverse City and had a good experience (in the NHL rookie tourney),” he said. “I can’t complain. I had a lot of fun down there. I know what it takes to get there now. It was definitely an eye-opener, and now I’m ready for this season. See ‘Dieno’ on Page B2

JOHN MacNEIL/Independent editor

The Red Deer Rebels made their annual trip to Stettler last Saturday for a Western Hockey League pre-season game. The Rebels defeated the Medicine Hat Tigers 8-5.

Dieno believes Rebels are ‘a contending team’ Continued from Page B1 “I expected to play a few games (with the Wild rookies), and that’s what they gave me. And with the opportunity they gave me, I thought I played pretty good. I’ll have a good year this season and see what happens.” The pro camp was icing on the cake for Dieno, who last season went from playing junior A in his native Saskatchewan to a leading role with the major junior Rebels. He finished the 2012-13 season as Red Deer’s top scorer, despite not joining the WHL team until mid-November. He had 27 goals and 59 points in 48 games. Almost forgotten is that, just a year ago, Medicine Hat cut Dieno, who had played with the Tigers the previous season. “A year ago, around this time, actually,” he recalled this week. “When you get an opportunity like I did to come to Red Deer and you prove yourself and you play your old team a year later, it shows how much can change in a year. It’s a pretty good eye-opener for people.” Dieno, a crafty player from Davidson, Sask., played much bigger than his fivefoot-10, 183-pound stature might suggest. He thrived in clutch situations as part of the Rebels’ top line with Maxwell and now-departed captain Turner Elson. Rebels newcomer Lukas Sutter, nephew of coach and general manager Brent Sutter, is poised to fill the open slot on the No. 1 unit. The former Saskatoon Blade

was scheduled to return Tuesday from the Winnipeg Jets’ training camp. The Rebels are waiting for word on the status of 19-year-old defenceman Mathew Dumba, a first-round NHL draft pick who might stick with Minnesota this season. “I’m sure if he plays the way he knows he can play, he has a real good chance of making that team this year,” Dieno said of Dumba. “(If he returns), it would be really good for the Rebels. You hope for him to make it (with the Wild) for himself, but as a team, you want those guys to be back. Having him come back would definitely add that offensive game. And he’s not afraid to fight. He’s just an all-around package kind of player. It would be great to have him back, but I hope he stays (in the NHL).” Either way, it’s still shaping up to be a bountiful season in Red Deer, where the Rebels return most of their lineup from last season. That includes 20-year-old goaltender Patrik Bartosak, a Los Angeles Kings’ prospect and the CHL goalie of the year last season. “I think we’re a top contending team,” Dieno said. “I think anything less than first in our conference would be a pretty big disappointment, with the team we have this year. Bartosak is in net. We’re really deep this year in lines, so it’s good.” Dieno spent the off-season working out in Saskatoon with the likes of current Medicine Hat forward Boston Leier and former Tigers sniper Linden Vey, a top scorer in the AHL.

Rhyse Dieno, the top scorer with the Red Deer Rebels last season, signs autographs last Saturday night at the Stettler Recreation Centre, where his hat trick led the Rebels to an 8-5 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers in Western Hockey League pre-season action.

“I pretty much worked on my legs most of the summer, my agility, focused a lot on conditioning and a lot of lower-body workouts,” said Dieno, who joined the Rebels last season on the same day that team owner Brent Sutter replaced Jesse Wallin as coach. “I got onto Minnesota’s (training) program and it definitely helped me get a lot stronger. I feel a lot stronger with the puck in the corners and stuff, and guys aren’t battling the puck off me as much as they used to. Just all-around, I feel a lot better this year. “I feel a lot more confident and poised with the puck. It just seems when you’re younger, you don’t feel you have much time with the puck. Now that I’m older, I see that you do have a lot more time and you can make plays. Yeah, it just comes with age and confidence. I feel really good right now.” Dieno is part of a strong contingent of Saskatchewan players with the Rebels. His close friends from the hockey world include Medicine Hat forwards Miles Koules, who joined Dieno at the Wild rookie camp, and Hunter Shinkaruk, a first-round draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks. Dieno’s brief pro audition has whet his appetite for more of the same after his junior career ends this season. “It’s pretty cool,” he said of wearing Wild colours. “It’s still all pretty crazy to me. Now that I’ve been there, I know what I want. I want more. I want to be there.”

Lacrosse season endless for Smyth family CHASE ROSLAND Independent reporter

Contributed photo

Cooper Smyth of Stettler won a provincial bronze medal this summer as part of the Lacoka bantam field lacrosse team. He’s one of four siblings busy on the lacrosse front.

Diehard lacrosse brothers Jordan, Cooper, Derek and Noah Smyth of Stettler all played in the Lacoka field lacrosse program this summer. Jordan and Cooper were with the midget Lacoka team, while Derek and Noah were members of the bantam team from the Lacombe and Ponoka region. “They had a great time,” said the boys’ mother, Kim Smyth. “They were able to play a different version of lacrosse, and meet more coaches and players from a number of associations.” The Smyths joined the Lacoka organization after finishing the spring season with their respective Stettler box lacrosse teams. Field lacrosse is played on an outdoor soccer field. Ten players are on the field, and four of them are equipped with six-footlong poles for better reach. Lacoka won the bronze medal at the Alberta Lacrosse Association midget championship late last month in Edmonton.

The Gators won by a goal over another Central Alberta team, Olds. Of the four teams in the semifinals, three were from Central Alberta. Despite a strong effort, the Lacoka bantams didn’t make it to the provincials. Daran Tulan from Stettler also played with the bantam Lacoka team. Also playing a few games with the bantam team was Isaac Lee of Erskine. Lee was part of the Alberta peewee team that placed fourth in the Canadian championship last month at Whitby, Ont. Derek and Noah Smyth plan to play winter lacrosse in Red Deer, starting this fall, so they’ll be playing lacrosse all year long. Taking the fall and winter to play football and hockey, Cooper will be back at it lacrosse-wise come March, when box lacrosse season runs again. Box lacrosse season in Alberta runs from March through June. Field lacrosse begins with a tournament in Las Vegas in March, and league games are scheduled in June, July and August. Kim Smyth is presisent of the two-yearold Stettler Minor Lacrosse Association.

Panthers score second shutout victory

Daniel Moon runs the ball for a touchdown, while running back Noah McKay provides blocking, during the Stettler Panthers’ 53-0 win over the host Sylvan Lake Bears in Central Alberta Football League peewee action. The Panthers haven’t allowed a point in their two victories.

The visiting Stettler Panthers blanked the Sylvan Lake Bears 54-0 in Central Alberta Football League peewee action last Saturday. The Panthers prevailed at halftime after the Bears elected to forfeit the rest of the game. “We are very proud of our team and are looking forward to a great season,” said Panthers coach Berri Shirley. Saturday’s effort was Stettler’s second shutout victory in as many games this season. “It was a dominating win in all aspects of the game,” Shirley said. “Stettler came out firing on both sides of the ball, and on special teams. “Coaches were extremely pleased with the defence, which for the second consecutive week did not allow any points.” After a bye this week, the Panthers visit Lacombe on Sept. 28.

HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

Volleyball season begins this week on four fronts CHASE ROSLAND Independent reporter All four William E. Hay volleyball teams are in action this week to kick off the high school season. The Stettler Wildcats are represented with senior and junior varsity (JV) clubs in boys’ and girls’ divisions. “Our school is very happy and excited to field four teams, in light of the fact that several 3A schools in Alberta aren’t able to play four teams,” said athletic director Warren Aspenes. Play began Tuesday for Stettler’s girls, with both the senior and JV Wildcats scheduled to play at Camrose (after press time). Today, the senior boys visit Camrose. The JV Wildcats will have to wait a week for their first league game, Sept. 23 at Rocky Mountain House, but they’re off to Calgary on Friday for a weekend tournament, as are the JV girls. The senior and JV boys play their home-opener on Sept. 25 against Lacombe. The girls’ home-opening action is Sept. 24 against HJ Cody of Sylvan Lake. The senior boys and girls play in the Ardrossan tournament this weekend. Each of the four Stettler coaches commented on their outlook for this season: Senior boys “I think our team will be

good this year,” Jefferson McClung said. “We have strong setters and strong hitters. Our team supports each other, which is great for the team atmosphere. If we keep strong team dynamics, we should have a great year.” Senior girls “We have a lot of returning players,” Rachelle Campeau said. “After the first week of practice, our team is looking quite strong. It should be a good season.” JV boys “We are excited and looking forward to the season ahead,” Brady Armstrong said. “We all feel we have lot’s of potential and great team chemistry. Our first tournament is in Calgary, and will be an exciting test come (this) Friday. All in all, we are excited to see what is in store for us this year.” JV girls “Our main focus is on skills, for our fairly young team,” Corinne Stephenson said. “Practices have been good.” SENIOR BOYS Aaron Lee Braden Deagle Brent Schweer Cole Bailey Jade Chapman Jordan Bauman Jordan Smyth Justin Dadensky Tristan Laughlin

Wildcats’ golf team swings into zones, but misses berth in provincial tourney CHASE ROSLAND Independent reporter The Stettler Wildcats teed off Tuesday for the opening of the Alberta high school golf season. Grade 12 students Ryan Coleman and Jacques du Toit, and Grade 11 students Kieran Rost and Stefan du Toit, competed yesterday at the Alberta Springs Golf Resort, just west of Red Deer, as part of the William E. Hay golf team. The four Wildcats played in the zone

tournament against students from various schools throughout central Alberta. The top two teams and the top two individuals from the zone tournament advance to the provincials. The Wildcats placed fifth out of 11 teams in the zone tourney. ”As a team, we did good,” Rost said. “We felt pretty good coming in, but just couldn’t get the finish we needed. There were a lot of good golfers to play against.” The local foursome had the best scores among the William E. Hay students who tried out last Thursday at the Stettler course.

SHEPHERD Leigh Shepherd was born March 22, 1958 in Stettler, Alberta to Jimmie and Ethel Baird, the second of five children. Leigh grew up in the Gadsby area where she was very active in the Westwoods Community. She attended school in Gadsby and then Stettler for high school. Leigh passed away peacefully on September 8, 2013 surrounded by family and close friends at the Stettler Health Care Centre. Leigh loved swimming, gardening, children and her cats (Munschkin, Sassy and Bailey). She was always offering help before accepting help and rarely put herself first. Above all, her family and friends were always the most important people. She was very proud of her children and very much in love with all of her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was very passionate about the Central Alberta MS Society. She worked hand-inhand with the MS Society to raise funds and awareness for the debilitating disease that inflicted herself and so many of her close friends. Leigh is survived by her parents Jimmie and Ethel Baird of Gadsby; son James (Dana) Shepherd of Gadsby; daughter Adrianne Shepherd (Jordan Gerstmar) of Edmonton; four grandchildren: Austin and Slade Shepherd and Rowan and Sadie Gerstmar; brother Kevin (Dianne) Baird of Gadsby, sisters Lynne (Doug) Potter of Halkirk and Melody (Darrel) Baird of Sherwood Park; brothers-in-law Gary (Bess) Shepherd of Botha, Randy (Lori) Shepherd of Donalda, Kevin (Lou-Ann) Shepherd of Red Deer and sisterin-law Chris (Jim) Church of Bonneville; nieces and nephews: Kenny (Kayla), MaryBeth (Scott), Dustin, Lauren (Clint), Michael, Kyle, Kaliesha, Tyson, Tyra, Lex, Tom, Michael, Logan, David, Alana, Amanda, Brandy, Angie, Darcy, Krystal, Matthew, Lucas, Jonas and Justin. She was predeceased by her husband Alan Shepherd, son Carl Shepherd, sister Jessie Baird, brothers-in-law Don ‘Fang’ Shepherd and David Shepherd, father-in-law Dave Shepherd and motherin-law Hulda Shepherd. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 2 PM at the Heartland Chapel of Stettler Funeral Home with Pastor Ross Helgeton officiating. Condolences may be viewed or sent to the family at www.stettlerfuneralhome.com. Memorial donations may be made to the Central Alberta MS Society.

Card Of Thanks With Heartfelt Thanks Thank you to all the people that turned out to celebrate the life of Leonard Sorum, and to all those who could not attend but sent their condolences. The support from cards, donations, phone calls and social media exchanges were overwhelming. It truly showed how loved and respected and what a good friend Leonard was. It was his wish that he would, in his life time, experience a break through in M.S. since the disease is so closely related to our family, but his death was so sudden and totally unexpected. Thank you from Carol, Debbie, Joe Plunkett & family, and Dale & Krystal Sorum & family

Card Of Thanks HOCKLEY A heartfelt thank you for the phone calls, food, donations, flowers and cards sent in memory of Ella. Thank you to Verna of Stettler Funeral Home for her guidance with the service and Reverend Ross Helgeton for his kind words. Minnie, Madeleine and families

‘Rape is an African problem’

ANNOUNCEMENTS!

1.877.223.3311

Last May, with considerable trepidation, I wrote an article about what seemed to be extraordinarily high rates of rape in Africa. The original data came from a study by South Africa’s Medical Research Council in 2009 that found that more than a quarter of South African men — 27.6 per cent — admitted that they had committed rape. Almost half of those men had raped two or three women or girls. One in 13 had raped at least 10 victims. Over the next couple of years, I ran across a couple of other less-detailed studies suggesting that the problem was not just South African. A report from the eastern Congo in 2012 said that over a third of the men interviewed — 34 per cent — had committed rape, and an older report from Tanzania found that 20 per cent of the women interviewed said they had been raped (although only one-10th as many rapes were reported to the police). So I wrote a piece called “An African Iceberg,” in which I said that this was a phenomenon that needed urgent investigation continent-wide — but it did occur to me to wonder if there were similar icebergs in other developing countries. The only figures that were available for developing countries elsewhere were official ones, and those normally only record the number of women who tell the police they have been raped. Most don’t. Women are reluctant to report rape in any society, and in traditional societies much more so. The South African study was the only one that had adopted the strategy of asking men directly. Maybe if the same sort of study were done in other continents, I thought, it would return equally horrifying figures. And lo! Somebody else had the same thought, and the resources to do something about it. The new report, conducted under the auspices of four United Nations agencies cooperating as “Partners for Prevention”, was published last week in the online version of “The Lancet Global Health”, a respected British medical journal. The study was undertaken

quite specifically to learn if the South African figures were duplicated in developing countries outside Africa. The researchers chose six countries in the Asia-Pacific region: China, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. As in the South African study, the word “rape” was not used in the questionnaire. The 10,178 men interviewed were asked if they had ever “forced a woman who was not your wife or girlfriend at the time to have sex” or “had sex with a woman who was too drunk or drugged to indicate whether she wanted it.” There were further questions about forcing a wife or girlfriend to have sex (which is also rape), about gang rape, and about raping males, but for simplicity’s sake let us stick with the questions about what the researchers called “single perpetrator rape” of a woman who was neither wife nor girlfriend. The answers varied from country to country, but the overall picture was clear. Africa (or at least South Africa) is all alone out there. In most of the Asian countries involved in the study, between two and four per cent of the men interviewed said that they had raped a “non-partner” woman. That falls into the same range that prevails, one suspects, in most developed countries (although their reported cases of rape are much lower). There were some local peculiarities, like the fact that in rural Bangladesh men are more likely to get raped than women. China came in surprisingly high, with six per cent of the men interviewed admitting to rape, but that may be related to the growing surplus of males in a society

where the gender ratio has become very skewed: there are 99 large Chinese cities where more than125 boys are born for every 100 girls. But Papua New Guinea was right up there with South Africa: 26.6 per cent of the men interviewed had committed “single perpetrator rape” of a nonpartner woman. And the other numbers were just as startling: 14 per cent of PNG men had participated in a gang rape, and 7.7 per cent had raped a man or boy. So, Asia as a whole is quite different from Africa on this count — but PNG is practically identical. What is so special about Papua New Guinea? It is a country with an extravagantly large number of different tribes and languages. It is an extremely violent country, where most people live in extreme poverty. It is a place where the law is enforced only sporadically, and often corruptly. And it is a place where traditional tribal values, patriarchal to the core, reign virtually unchallenged among a large part of the population. Remind you of anywhere? Well, you already suspected that this was at the root of it, didn’t you? You just didn’t want to say so, for fear of being accused of being racist, anti-African or something of that sort. But it does need to be said, loudly and repeatedly. Women and girls are more likely to be the victims of sexual violence in Africa than almost anywhere else, and the only way to change that is to change the behaviour of African men. By persuasion if possible, but also by enforcing the law. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose columns are published in 45 countries.
