Donor pays $2.5m for future parkland in Glen Valley Funds earmarked for Aldergrove recreation centre By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

Aspen Thorpe, aged one and a half, of Aldergrove, plays in the hay at the 35th Country Celebration at Langley’s Campbell Valley Regional Park over the weekend. Mount Lehman’s annual oldfashioned fall fair returns this Saturday, Sept. 21, with more family-style fun, food, music and games.

The fate of a 25-acre parcel of Langley Township forest land has been decided with the announcement, Sept. 11, of a $2.5 million deal that sees Trinity Western University (TWU) buying the property from the Township using donated money from the Blaauw family. TWU has promised no housing will be built on the site. Money to purchase the Glen Valley Gray Pit Lands in the McLellan Park Forests on 257A Street was donated by Ann Blaauw and children John, Janet, and Jennifer, in memory of their late husband and father, Thomas Blaauw, a long-time resident of Langley who passed away in August of 2012. The agreement between the university and the Township includes a restrictive covenant which only allows buildings that “enhance the use of the conservation area on the property” in the words of a TWU press release.

Stolen-property offender sentenced to two years By VIKKI HOPES Aldergrove Star

A New Westminster man who pleaded guilty to a series of stolenproperty offences has been sentenced to two years in prison. Ivan Logan Johnson’s prison term will be followed by two years of probation. He was given credit for the one

year he has already served in jail. Johnson, 33, was arrested with co-accused Dave Yaroslawsky, 31, of Surrey on March 2, 2012 after a standoff at the Super 8 Motel on Glover Road in Langley. The men were in possession of so many stolen items that police had to create a slideshow on their website to allow the public to look though the

items and determine what belonged to them. Police recovered everything from stolen jewelry, including lockets and rings, to coins, stolen ID and electronics. The police then held a day where victims of break-ins could come to the detachment and view the property.

Power your car. Is it time to renew your vehicle insurance? Renew your vehicle insurance with Aldergrove Insurance and you could win a $75 gas card! Visit one of our offices today!

The items had been stolen mainly from homes in Abbotsford, Surrey, Langley, Hope and Chilliwack. Yaroslawsky has pleaded guilty to 32 charges – mainly for stolen property – and is scheduled for sentencing in November. During his sentencing hearing on July 31, the court heard that he had accumulated so many stolen items

that he had rented a storage locker in Aldergrove to stash it. Numerous items were also found in his vehicle at the Super 8 Motel, as well as in his motel room. He claimed that he was a “fence” for the stolen property and was not involved in the break-ins. – with files from Monique Tamminga

Grandparents’ scam returns By VIKKI HOPES Aldergrove Star

The “grandparents’ scam” has resurfaced in Abbotsford, resulting in a 73-year-old man being defrauded of $2,500. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the man received a call last Thursday from a woman claiming to be his granddaughter. The woman claimed she had been in a drunk-driving crash in Quebec and

needed money to repair her vehicle. The man then wired her the cash. The scam has been widely reported across Canada and has cropped up in Abbotsford on occasion. In 2010, four local women lost between $2,000 and $4,800 each, and a man was scammed out of $9,000 the following year. MacDonald said police continue to receive complaints about the scam, although most do not involve any money being sent.

There is one example not far from his own home, Fox said. “Over a year ago, there was a fire in a house and the house is still standing [unrepaired],” Fox said. Other councillors were reluctant to go as far as Fox wanted. “I just find this a little heavyduty,” Councillor Bob Long said, suggesting Township staff should see what other municipalities are doing. Councillor Kim Richter agreed, saying she would like to know if the policy was legally feasible. Councillor Bev Dornan wondered whether the 30-day time limit would be too short to be enforceable. Long and Richter convinced a majority of council to delay a decision on the Fox proposal until staff could investigate further.

Fox and Councillor Grant Ward voted against the delay. Councillor Steve Ferguson was not present in council chambers for the vote. Neighbouring Surrey mounted a campaign against derelict houses six years ago, giving owners the choice of repairing them or having them demolished. During one three-month period in the summer of 2007, the city applied to tear down 40 such homes. A Surrey city staff report pointed the finger at some developers, saying the number of derelict houses in the city had “risen significantly with the increased development of properties [that] are purchased, then sit vacant while the prospective developer proceeds through planning, rezoning and development permit processes.”

This total builds upon the $5.8 million previously raised by ‘Trekkers’ during the event’s 29 year lifespan. BC Lung Association event organizer Kate Jarvis says, “The event has a real family feel with less fanfare than other, bigger

commercial fundraisers but with a lot of heart and soul. It’s a grassroots affair that has grown over time – and there is a true sense of community amongst participants, many of whom meet here once a year and share in the spirit of giving back. For more information call the BC Lung Association toll free at 1-800-665-5864 or email trek@ bc.lung.ca The mission of the BC Lung Association is to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. A community social potluck picnic was held at noon at the Aldergrove Athletic Park picnic shelter on Sunday, September 15, on behalf of the LangleyAldergrove-Abbotsford Walk for Memories group. The focus of the picnic was to connect supporters, caregivers and people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias to discuss ideas for the next Walk For Memories, which will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2014. An enormous carrot cake was divided up and enjoyed. There was even hot tea thoughtfully provided by one caregiver. This was very welcome as a chill wind was blasting across the field. “Today’s weather is practice for the real walk,“ joked Rose Puszka, “Last January it rained as well. This remark provoked discussion of the conviviality, the amiable firemen, the hamburgers and hot drinks and the warmth of the pavilion the year before. A bucket truck used in several crimes in Langley over the past few weeks has been recovered from nearly the same area it was stolen from. Langley RCMP confirm that they recovered the truck from behind a property in the 19800 block of 56 Avenue on Aug. 30. Police believe the bucket truck was taken from a business in the 19800 block of Fraser Highway in mid-August. “Forensics is taking fingerprints and looking for DNA now,” said Langley RCMP spokespersons Cpl. Holly Marks. Marks said on top of it being used to steal wires from telephone poles, it was also used to break-in to secured business compounds more recently. “We have video surveillance showing the bucket truck was used,” said Marks.

VICTORIA – When Christy Clark became premier in 2011, one of her first priorities was to delay steep increases in BC Hydro rates. BC Hydro was heading to the B.C. Utilities Commission to apply for rate increases totalling 32 per cent over three years. This, obviously, was a problem for an unelected premier whose single message was that she was good for families, and who faced an election in two years. The government’s Mr. FixIt, Rich Coleman, first tried to delay a couple of expensive seismic upgrades, adding to the long history of political fiddles that pushed off expensive problems. BC Hydro’s engineers soon convinced him that if the creaky old Ruskin and Campbell River dams were to bust in a quake, it wouldn’t be good for families downstream. Coleman scraped up some internal savings in the vast utility and met Clark’s predetermined target of keeping rate increases below four per cent in the pre-election period. Mission accomplished, as George W. Bush might have said. Then last week, an August working paper on the need for BC Hydro rate hikes was leaked. It showed BC Hydro making a case for new increases totaling 26 per cent over two years. The leak came via the Canadian Office and

Bills come due at BC Hydro

Professional Employees local 378, the BC Hydro inside staff union that has a history of mostly juvenile attacks on the B.C. Liberal government. Bill Bennett, the current energy minister, spent the next couple of days repeating to anyone who would listen that this initial proposal had already been rejected, and that work was well along to make the rate increase more palatable. Perhaps it’s back to where it was in 2011. COPE 378 and the NDP played their rehearsed roles. Both tried to blame the situation on private power contracts. The union and its political front are less concerned about rising power bills than they are about holding onto the state monopoly on electricity generation. Energy industry lawyer David Austin calculates that of the proposed 26.4-per-cent increase, about 3.5 per cent can be attributed to BC Hydro buying power from private sources, at prices competitive with new public power sources such as the Site C dam. Most of it comes from the overdue repairs to those old dams, other costly projects including the addition of turbines to two Columbia River dams, and deferred debt from previous political meddling. In August I reported that as many as 20 of BC Hydro’s existing private power purchase contracts will be can-

celled or deferred. This was also seized upon to portray private power as the root of all evil, both financially and environmentally. In fact the attrition rate on these projects has always been about one out of three. This is what happens when the risks of expanding the provincial electrical grid are shared with private investors. These run-of-river and wind projects were promoted to maximize clean energy sources, as well as to spread the grid to remote areas. This was Gordon Campbell’s climate change strategy. Then came the gas boom. Clark seized upon liquefied natural gas exports as the key to future prosperity, and the government soon declared burning gas “clean” as long as it facilitates LNG production. Bennett now acknowledges that gas-fired power plants are an option for the future. They are cheaper than hydro, small or large. Bennett’s two tasks are to supply industry with cheap power and get consumer rates under control. It looks as if the gas is being turned up, and Site C is moving to the back burner. The hospital had me on morphine - and had it on record prior to surgery that I was very allergic to it. Following surgery I awoke, vomiting most of the blood out of my body. This led to a blood transfusion to replace all the blood. I’m looking into this to see if it could be the reason why I’ve survived and been so rare a survivor. “My type of cancer at that time was ‘juvenile and aggressive’. They explained they had no idea how to even treat it so they put me on the second highest levels of chemo and radiation treatments - together. “Once the initial shock hit, I slowly came to realize that it was all now ‘out of my hands’... at this point I decided to let go and just follow the advice from doctors, oncologists, family, friends etc., and just live as best I could, with joy for each day of life left. “What followed was a very aggressive treatment of chemo and radiation and through the entire experience I remained calm, and even cracked jokes to the medical community treating me and to fellow patients and family. This seemed to ‘ease’ the experience more because I was not hanging on to the ‘negative’ emotions often coming with this experience. “It’s been a long journey. pletely crashed and doctors told me I was done. “I explained to these doctors, ‘Never say you are done to a cancer survivor! I’m done in this career ~ but starting another.’ “Following this I joined Toastmasters International and began learning how to be an effective public speaker. This has led me to so many more experiences and one is with another organization which flew me to Washington, DC, to help with going to Capitol Hill and pushing for stomach cancer to be raised on the priority list. I represented Canada and my ‘pride’ knew no bounds. Meeting other survivors was inspiring and being the longest survivor there, I tried to help with questions and sharing of information to help everyone learn as much as possible about this deadly disease. “Now I may be asked to go on a local news station to tell my story and I’m hoping to begin a Canadian chapter for us all to globally unite and learn together. My dream? To eliminate stomach cancer by raising it to the top for more funding research and grants. “Thank you for letting me tell my story. I have a book almost completed in hopes of also inspiring others about to go this journey into fear and the unknown. “Believe in miracles for they do happen,” says Millie McConnell. The Aldergrove Leaders’ Club Toastmasters is hosting an Open House event that is open to the public on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Launch (Youth) Room at the SDA church (not affiliated with the church), located at 26245 - 28 Ave., Aldergrove. Please contact Karin Zinner at 604-882-2513 with any questions regarding the event.

Take an artistic adventure in Langley By KRISTYL CLARK Aldergrove Star

With around 50 local artists set to display their work later this month, art aficionados will have plenty to enjoy as they take in the fifth annual Langley Art Studio Tour. “This is so exciting — we have got such a wealth of talent in Langley and outwards,” said Felicity Holmes, a Brookswood artist and new addition to the event’s organizing committee, which includes co-founder Deborah Strong, Jeanette Parkes of The Loafing Shed Glass Studio, Murrayville artist Donna Leavens and fellow Brookswood artist Sasha Moye. “It’s a nice way to get two solid weekends where people can come from all over in a lovely rural setting and see some fantastic art.” On the scenic tour — which takes in both country and city — one will find painters, potters, glass artists, jewelers, wood turners, photographers, sculptors and others, who will be opening up their studios to offer a behindthe-scenes glimpse at the creative process. Many are sharing their studios with one or more guest artists. This year’s event, which runs the last two weekends of September (Sept. 21-22 and Sept. 28-29 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), will have nearly 50 juried artists and artisans — the largest number of participants in the tour’s five-year history. Some are returning favourites from previous years, while others are brand-new to the tour. And once again, it will be an exciting mix of mediums and

After spending several years promoting her work at a gallery in White Rock, she’s looking forward to reconnecting with her Langley clients. “It will be nice to touch base and let them know I’m back in town,” said McPhee, who recently signed on with the Fort Langley Artist Studio. “If you don’t keep promoting yourself, people will forget about you. That’s what makes this tour so unique — it reminds people that hey there’s so much talent here in our own community.” Vehicle transportation is an absolute must to cover the distances involved in the tour. Artists raising the ‘FLAG’ for art retrospective By BRENDA ANDERSON Aldergrove Star

Past and present will meet when Passages and Reflections: A Unifying Retrospective of FLAG — 1993 to 2013, opens at the Langley Centennial Museum this week. Fort Langley Artists Group’s 20th anniversary show begins on Thursday, Sept. 19 and continues until Nov. 3 at the museum on King Street in Fort Langley. Throughout each summer for the past two decades FLAG artists have mounted shows based on themes suggested and selected by members. Passages and Reflections offered the artists a chance to revisit any and all themes from the past 20 years. “We wanted to address the themes (in the retrospective) because that’s what draws us together — the democratic process of choosing a theme,” said FLAG artist Robin Bandenieks. At the beginning of each FLAG season, every artist arrives with an idea. They lobby, they debate and they vote. And once the choice is made, there is no getting out of it, regardless of how impossible it may seem. In fact, it becomes a case of ‘how creative can you get?’ said

It’s a large exhibit, noted Bandenieks, who has submitted paintings representing three past themes — Fur, Fins and Feathers from earlier this summer (a large portrait of a lion, which she wasn’t previously able to show), 2009’s Rivers of the Valley (an otter) and 2004’s ‘Time and Aging’ (a pair of ‘then’ and ‘now’ portraits of Queen Elizabeth II.) FLAG anniversary shows at the museum are something of a tradition, said Bandenieks. Every five years, the artists — who display their work each summer at the modest CN heritage train station gallery just down the road — take over the substantially larger museum space in celebration. For Passages and Reflections, the gallery has been divided into segments, giving each artist a designated space to display. The artists will host an opening reception on Sept. 19, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the museum. Entertainment will be provided by harpist Maria Moularas. The Langley Centennial Museum is located at 9135 King St. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. except on Sundays, when it is open from 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

New Cineplex to open within two months By KEVIN MILLS Aldergrove Star

Abbotsford movie fans don’t have to wait much longer to enjoy the VIP experience. Cineplex Cinemas Abbotsford and VIP will open its doors to the public “well before Christmas, according to Mike Langdon, director of communications for Cineplex. Langdon was in Abbotsford on Thursday to provide a brief media tour of the new 11-cinema, 1,920-seat facility which he said should open in late October or early November. The cinema is located in the Highstreet Shopping Centre at 3122 Mt. Lehman Road and features seven regular theatres, one UltraAVX auditorium and three VIP theatres. “We wanted to bring this type of theatre to Abbotsford; bring the VIP concept to Abbotsford, so we were really looking for a development that made sense, said Langdon. He said Highstreet offered that opportunity. The VIP cinemas offer larger, padded chairs that rock and lean back. The seats in the front row also

Killer is ‘guilty’ Aldergrove Star

The Edmonton man accused of killing three armoured guards and critically injuring another pleaded guilty in court in Alberta last Monday. Travis Baumgartner, 22, shot four of his co-workers who were putting cash into an ATM machine at the University of Alberta in Edmonton on June 15, 2012. He was arrested two days later, trying to cross the border at Aldergrove. Baumgartner was initially charged with three counts of first degree murder, one count of attempted murder and four counts of robbery with a firearm. He pleaded guilty to one count of first degree murder, two counts of second degree murder and one count of attempted murder. An intensive manhunt was underway in Edmonton after the shootings. Police announced that he was the prime suspect in the murders. The murders took place early on a Friday morning, and Baumgartner drove to B.C. and was arrested on Saturday evening after attempting to cross the border into the U.S. at the Aldergrove/Lynden crossing. He was initially taken into custody by Langley RCMP, before being moved to Alberta.

Tickets are priced between $6 and $7 higher than regular admission and only adults are admitted since it’s a licensed auditorium. Along with the availability of alcoholic beverages, the VIP rooms also have a more advanced

menu. Along with the normal popcorn and pop, customers can order chicken wings, calamari, wraps, burgers and more. You can also get in-seat service before the movie begins. Also as part of the VIP package, no ads are played before the movie, only coming attractions.

In the UltraAVX auditorium, the largest in the building with 356 seats, viewers can enjoy a wall-to-wall screen and upgraded Dolby digital surround sound. It also has wider reserve seats. Along with mainstream theatrical releases, Langdon said the new facility will also offer alternative programs including WWE wrestling events, the Met Opera from New York, theatrical events, dance performances and other shows that can be brought in via satellite. Cineplex also offers a classic film series, older kids’ films and other options. “Sinister Cinema is another program that we’ve launched in some of our theatres. It’s genre horror – horror films you may not have seen on the big screen in years past but have a real cult following. While he could not confirm how many of these programs could be coming to Abbotsford, Langdon did say he expected with a “theatre of this size, we will be bringing significant alternative programming to Abbotsford. The new cinema will employ 175 full- and part-time workers.

Terry Fox Run is a Family Affair

Foyer art call for entries Aldergrove Star

HARRY HUNT PHOTO

Aldergrove’s Stewart family were among the participants in this year’s Terry Fox Run, Sunday, in Langley City.

The Langley Centennial Museum will be offering its Foyer Art program again, and is inviting artists to submit photographs of recent artwork, in any medium, for consideration for this year’s program. “It’s a great opportunity for artists, particularly new artists, to get some exposure in the community, but to also get some insight into the exhibiting process,” says the museum’s curator, Kobi Christian. The museum plans to display the artists’ works in two month time slots. The submission deadline for applications is October 21. For more information, contact curator Kobi Christian at 604-532-3536 or kchristian@tol.ca

Tour de Valley team of 25 to travel 800 kms Aldergrove Star

A team of 25 law enforcement and emergency services personnel will set out on an 800 km bicycle trip on Thursday, Sept. 26 to raise funds for pediatric cancer programs and research. The Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley begins in Aldergrove and travels through more than a dozen Fraser Valley communities before ending in Abbotsford on Friday, Oct. 4. In every community, the tour stops at schools and supporter businesses to promote the ride and its cause. The Tour de Fraser Valley includes participants from communities including Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Delta, Langley, Mission, Surrey and White Rock.

The first Cops for Cancer program started in 1994, when an Edmonton police officer with a shaved head posed for a photo with a young cancer patient. The officer wanted to support the boy, who was being ridiculed at school because of his hair loss. Other officers joined, and Cops for Cancer was launched. It has since expanded across the province to include four tours, raising more than $25 million to fund pediatric cancer programs and research through the Canadian Cancer Society. Money donated to Cops for Cancer is also used for the operation of Camp Goodtimes, a summer recreation program at Loon Lake in Maple Ridge offered at no cost to children affected by

cancer and to their families. The other three tours take place in Greater Vancouver, the northern region and Vancouver Island, also in September. Visit copsforcancer.ca to make a donation and find out more about Cops for Cancer. Tour De Valley Schedule: Sept. 26 – Aldergrove, Langley; Sept. 27 – White Rock, South Surrey; Sept. 28 – Abbotsford, Chilliwack; Sept. 29 – Hope, Boston Bar, Chilliwack; Sept. 30 – Chilliwack, Mission; Oct. 1 – Mission, Maple Ridge, Surrey; Oct. 2 – Ladner, Tsawwassen, Surrey, North Delta; Oct. 3 and 4 – Abbotsford. Participating officers are: Abbotsford Police: Craig Burridge, Trevor Sales (trainer),

Daryl Young; BC Sheriff Service: Vicki Cobby, Jon Pothier; CBSA: Selene Millsap, Chris Rosenberger (captain); Chilliwack RCMP: Lorelei Jeffery; Coast Capital Savings: Ian Maguire; Delta PD: Nilo Diguangco, Catherine Fiddick, Dave Ogilvy (trainer), Ken Usipiuk; E Division (Surrey HQ): Bruce Singer; Langley RCMP: Aaron Kehler, Pam Morrison, Keith Rogers, Christine Waterhouse; Langley RCMP (Aux): Mark Peterse; Mission RCMP: Joanie Sidhu; Surrey RCMP: Amber Briggs, Danielle Daigneault; Surrey RCMP (aux): Bonnie Mellor; Transit Police: Kelly Dyer; White Rock RCMP: Gregg Holland

Aldergrove Kodiaks down Pilots, 9-4 By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

Four goals in the second period helped the Aldergrove Kodiaks to a 9-4 rout of the Abbotsford Pilots. The junior B hockey clubs faced off at Abbotsford’s MSA Arena on Friday, Sept. 13, as Aldergrove evened their record at 1-1 in the Pacific Junior Hockey League. The Kodiaks had lost their season opener 5-2 to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack on Sept. 11 at the Aldergrove Arena. But it was a different story in Abbotsford as the Kodiaks used a deadly power play — it struck for four goals on four opportunities — to ground the Pilots. The Pilots only scored once in seven power plays. Aldergrove led 2-1 after 20 minutes before blowing the game open in the second for a 6-1 advantage. Each team scored three times in the third. Scott McHaffie paced the attack with two goals and an assist while Stephen Ryan and Elvis Jansons each had one goal and two helpers. Matthew Vela, CJ Lilies, Kenny Prato, Jackson Wanick and Spencer McHaffie had a goal apiece. Kodiaks’ keeper Cole MacInnes stopped 22 of the 26 shots he faced.

Kodiak Jackson Waniek was first star and Scott McHaffie was second star of the game. WOLF PACK SPOILS OPENER The North Vancouver Wolf Pack scored three times in the final period to post a 5-2 victory over the Aldergrove Kodiaks on the opening night of the Pacific Junior Hockey League season. The game was played at Aldergrove Arena on Sept. 11. The teams were tied at one after 20 minutes and the Wolf Pack’s Marcus Houck put the visitors ahead for good with the only goal of the second. Taylor Tanti — son of former Vancouver Canuck Tony Tanti — scored twice in the third while Connor Pasco and Spencer Quon had the other North Vancouver goals. Jackson Waniek had opened the scoring for Aldergrove while Stephen Ryan tallied in the third. Cole MacInnes made 40 saves in the loss. This coming week the Kodiaks travel to Mission Leisure Centre to play the City Outlaws Thursday, Sept. 19, 7:15 p.m. and the Burnaby Winter Club on Sunday, Sept. 22 to play the Grandview Steelers at 4 p.m. The Kodiaks’ next home game is Wednesday, Sept. 25 when they host the Port Moody Panthers. Game time is 7:15 p.m.

It was a golden end to the summer break for Levi Gallant. Gallant, a 16-year-old goaltender from Langley helped backstop Team BC to the gold medal at the U16 field lacrosse national championships. The tournament was held over the Labour Day weekend in Longeuil, Que. In the finals, B.C. defeated one of their chief rivals, Team Ontario, 14-9. “It felt great to win,” Gallant said. “We just played so well.” Gallant shared the goaltending duties through the round robin and semifinal, but got the nod for the championship final. This is the second straight year he has helped B.C. win gold at nationals. Team BC was in a pool with

Levi Gallant and his father, Peter, celebrated the gold medal which Team BC won with a 14-9 victory. Ontario, Alberta and the Iroquois Lacrosse Association. And it was that latter squad which gave B.C. its biggest scare, taking them into triple overtime

before falling 14-13. Gallant has been playing the sport since he was six, but only took up goaltending about five years ago. “I like the pressure of being the last line of defence,” he said. Gallant, who began Grade 11 at Langley Secondary this month, was scheduled to be begin the field lacrosse this season on Sunday (Sept. 15) with the Langley Thunder. Connor Abrams, Ryhs Burnell, Chase Fraser and James Rahe helped their team to the silver medal. That tournament was also in Longeuil, Que. over the Labour Day weekend.
