◆ COVER STORY
When public school isn’t enough Haahuupayak is one of several non-traditional schools offering education in Port Alberni This is the first of a series on nontraditional school choices in the Alberni Valley.
Christopher sun Alberni VAlley news
Port Alberni parents have little choice when it comes secondary school education for their children but there are choices when it comes to the primary and intermediate grades. Besides public schools, which most kids attend, there are two religious-based private schools, both charging tuition; a First Nations school which is free and open to non-aboriginals and there is the publicly funded Francophone school, which is somewhat exclusive due to the language requirement for its students. This feature is not an endorsement of private or public schools, but is meant to provide insight on what these different schools offer. What may be best for one child may not necessarily be the best for another. In the end, the majority of these kids will all meet as teenagers at the publicly funded Alberni District Secondary School.

is about to start at Haahuupayak School. It’s a morning ritual that sees everyone gather in the foyer and with a student leading, they engage in a song and dance, before dispersing. Haahuupa means continuous teaching with care, which is exactly what Haahuupayak provides to its students, says principal Gio Mussato. From providing a sandwich to a student who arrives at school hungry to understanding and providing empathy to students from difficult backgrounds. Haahuupayak is an independent school focused on teaching the Nuu-chah-nulth culture and language. It is located just off the Somass River Bridge on Tseshaht

First Nation territory. Although it is a First Nations run independent school, the school is open to all and does not charge tuition. “We run a school like you would run a regular public school,” Mussato said. “It’s a culture based education we offer.” Haahuupayak students attend a Nuu-chah-nulth study class every day, which teaches students about the culture, language and tradition, with the use of storytelling, singing, dancing and arts and crafts. “We have 22 masks and skins that the kids are allowed to

use,” said Nuu-chahnulth teacher Trevor Little, explaining students are also taught about how important salmon and animals are to First Nation communities. “We have a cedar unit where we pick cedar off the trees and make gifts.” Haahuupayak was founded in 1976 as there was concern within the First Nation community that their children were not succeeding in the regular public school system. The school moved into its current architecturally stunning building, built to resemble an eagle with its wings spread, in 1998.
The school has welcomed non-First Nation students in the past and with the First Nation community taking on an increasing role in economic development in the area, Mussato said learning the Nuuchah-nulth language and culture could be advantageous for a non-First Nation child. Classroom sizes are capped at 20 students and due to the school’s small size, everyone knows each other. “We did a survey and parents really like the cultural education we provide,” Mussato said. “The kids also really enjoy the school.” Haahuupayak school is fully funded by the provincial government, unlike most independent schools which receive half. Students living on reserve, however, are funded by Tseshaht First Nation through funds disbursed from the federal government to the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council. The school has 90 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, offers a fullday Kindergarten program and has a separate infanttoddler program and preschool. The school also provides a free bus service to any student who does not live on the reserve. Next: Faith-based learning in the Alberni Valley.

ason Goovaerts says that his son and daughter shouldn’t have to stand beside a busy Highway 4 to be picked up by an overcrowded bus and brought to school. But less money for busing equals fewer
routes, fewer buses and limited options, School District 70 Superintendent Cam Pinkerton said. Last year, Goovaerts’ children used to board the school bus at Winters Road, which lays just off Lakeshore Road and was a five-minute walk from their home. That changed this year however. Now,
the children walk a kilometre to their new stop at the corner of Lakeshore Road and Highway 4—which is in an 80-kilometre-perhour traffic zone. The move is a safety hazard and doesn’t make logistic sense, Goovaerts said. It’s difficult for large trucks to slow down for a school bus. And impatient drivers

don’t wait for the bus and pass it instead, despite warning signals. Goovaerts said that a better approach would be for the bus to drive another 30 seconds down the road. The bus could turn off at the former West Bay Hotel then come back up Lakeshore Road, then exit back onto the highway. “That makes more sense because most of the families live along there,” he said. Another issue Goovaerts has is the increase in the number of students riding buses. “The kids say that it’s too overcrowded and that there are three and four to a seat,” he said. Previously, there were two school buses that serviced Sproat Lake. “Now there’s just one, and it covers Lakeshore Road, Faber Road, Stirling Arm, McCoy Lake, and Great Central

The roots of the The Goovaerts District officials school busing issue aren’t alone. A group announced earlier this year that it would be taking steps to make up for the pending $750,000 budget hit. “But the school closure issue got the headlines,” Pinkerton said. Now, there are three fewer buses running in Port Alberni; no bus in Bamfield; two fewer buses in Ucluelet/Tofino. The district is also no longer allowing cross-boundary pickups-dropoffs, nor school of choice ones, he said. “We just don’t have the ability to accommodate that anymore.” Pinkerton said he’s aware of the Goovaerts’ issue. The driver stops and follows all traffic rules, he said. But remedying the matter creates a chain reaction. 250. Continued / A7

Permits, inspections and fines will be the new order of the day for derelict buildings in Port Alberni. Port Alberni city council voted to receive a building standards bylaw report from city planner Scott Smith about the initiative. Businesses and the public aren’t fully aware of the implications of the byalw therefore the plan will go to a public consultation at a date to be determined. Resource issues that give force and effect to the bylaw will also have to be addressed during budget discussions, Smith said. Excerpts from the bylaw include owners will need to register vacant buildings with a $1,000 permit. Special safety and monitoring inspections are required. Violators will be fined between $100$10,000 and or spend six months in jail. The bylaw is a first in the community, Smith said. “We can’t catch every piece of property with this, but we can sure catch some of them,” Coun. Jack McLeman said. ‘Vacant building’ was defined in Smith’s report as a building without a lawful occupant, or which is not being put to lawful commercial, residential or industrial use for 45 out of 60 days. City manager Ken Watson clarified that a building can be boarded up but not vacant, that the doors and windows are in good repair. Coun. Cindy Solda asked about fines and eye sore properties of absentee landlords, and specifically asking about tarped roofs. Continued / A18

Ministry meeting called over water bombers Christopher sun Alberni VAlley news
An emergency meeting has been set up between Port Alberni and B.C. Forest Ministry representatives at the Union of BC Municipalities meeting in Vancouver in an effort to renew the Martin Mars water bomber contract. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources decided against renewing the water bomber contract with its owner, The Coulson Group in May. Ministry officials have said in the past that they don’t find it feasible to use an aircraft that is aging and is the last of its kind in operation, even though it is arguably the largest water carrying aircraft in the world. Mayor John Douglas said
the city wants the ministry to reverse its decision. “The capacity of the Mars bomber is twice the capacity of any water bomber in B.C.,” Douglas said, while on his way to the meeting in downtown Vancouver. “There has been no real, rational explanation as to why they don’t want to use the water bomber.” Douglas said the the Mars bomber crew is experienced with fighting fires and it would be a waste to see that disappear. He also said the bomber is a tourist attraction and is valued in the community. Douglas added that if the meeting with ministry staff fails, an emergency resolution to save the water bomber will be drawn up during the Union of British Columbia
Municipalities conference, which is occurring in Vancouver this week. This resolution would have the support of every municipality in the province. The meeting was set to take place at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, which is after press time.

research facility in Port Alberni as commercial production of medical marijuana will become legal next year. Hopkins has plans to operate a commercial grow-op somewhere in the Alberni Valley. On Sept. 30, there will be a public hearing to rezone the former Stephen’s Sheet Metal building on Bute Street, where Hopkins plans to base his business. Solda would not comment on who the second party is but she has reservations about the whole thing. She said she is the “lone sheep” on council who isn’t crazy about this kind of business within the city. “I’m mixed,” she said, explaining her knowledge of medical marijuana and how the dispensary will run is limited. Two Alberni Clayoquot Regional District directors will be attending the Walk for Reconciliation in Vancouver this week, at a cost of $850 each for added hotel accommodation and meal allowances. Sproat Lake director Penny Cote and Long Beach director Tony Bennett will represent the ACRD at the walk on Sept. 22. The walk is the finale event of Reconciliation Week, which according to Reconciliation Canada’s website, is being held to promote reconciliation and revitalize relationships between Aboriginal Peoples and Canadians. The directors have already been in Vancouver for a week at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention. ACRD directors unanimously supported participation in the walk, but some weren’t thrilled with the price tag. “I think representation is very important,” said Tofino director Josie Osbourne at an ACRD board meeting. “But I personally would rather see one person attend, we don’t need two.” Osbourne was joined by directors Alan McCarthy, Lucas Banton and Bill Irving in voting against sending two ACRD representatives. Chair Cindy Solda later said ACRD representation at the walk is important because there is a large First Nations community in the ACRD. “It’s very important we understand what the issues are, what happened in the past and remember what happened,” Solda said. “We need to remember and acknowledge it and not bury it.”

Enrolment up at ADSS, down in middle schools Small WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni VAlley news
There are 50 more students enrolled at Alberni District Secondary School than projected, School District 70 Superintendent Cam Pinkerton said. Enrolment is up significantly at the high school but that’s not unusual for this time of year, Pinkerton said. “We usually get a lot of students who try and go to ADSS but later feel it isn’t for them, then they switch over to VAST,” Pinkerton said. “We had 120 students who made that transfer last year.” There are also 40 fewer students than projected at the middle school level in the Alberni Valley. And there are six fewer students

than projected at elementary schools. The numbers are still being crunched but there are approximately two-and-a-half per cent fewer students enrolled than was projected by the district last spring, Pinkerton said. The greatest decrease is at the middle school level, he said. AW Neill and EJ Dunn Middle Schools are equally affected by the decrease. Families leaving the Valley for employment purposes is the most common reason for the decrease, he said. “Parents will usually make a decision to leave before high school.” The West Coast has also seen a loss as 50 fewer students than projected have enrolled in Ucluelet Elementary-
Secondary, he said. Fewer students technically equates to fewer dollars flowing into the school district from the Ministry of Education. But a special funding protection measure kicks in and the district will receive more than one per cent of the previous year’s budget, which in SD70 adds up to $600,000. There are other trends Pinkerton has noticed in the district. There are a lot of spouses who work out of town but their families still live in town. Several families moved here specifically so their kids could go to the new high school. And a lot of couples who are originally from here are moving back after their kids are grown, he said. A continuing trend sees the number of
‘We hope to see those numbers addressed...’ – Ken Zydyk Aboriginal students in the district remain steady at approximately 1,600. The school district bases its numbers on the actual number of children going to school in the district, he said. But the Ministry of Education bases its enrolment projections on the census, number of births, and number of women between the ages of 20-34, Pinkerton said. Port Alberni isn’t alone in reporting decreased student enrolment. Out of 60 school districts in B.C. 57 are reporting enrolment declines,
while three have reported enrolment increases, he said. The school district already had time to prepare for enrolment declines, Alberni District Teachers’ Union President Ken Zydyk said. The district anticipated the loss in the spring and held back two full-time teaching positions in response, Zydyk said. “They can now re-assign those positions where they are needed,” he said. “They can even break it up into part-time pieces and assign them that way if they need to.” High school teachers in Port Alberni and
Ucluelet are telling Zydyk that science classes in particular are reporting more than 30 students per class. “We hope to see those addressed in the near future,” he said. The drop in the number of students in middle school is shocking at first glance, Zydyk said. “When you lose students it’s usually spread over the three grades instead of just one,” he said. The district may have funding protection this year but it’s only a temporary measure, Zydyk said. “My understanding is that it runs out in a couple of years.”

Holly Cathcart, owner of Bosley’s Port Alberni, brings her ‘office buddies’— golden retrievers Finn, left, and Gili—to work with her. Cathcart and her staff celebrate their first anniversary in business this weekend.
WELCOME
Holly Cathcart and her staff at Bosley’s will celebrate an eventful first year in business this weekend. “I can’t believe it’s a year already,” says Cathcart, who left her job as a medical lab technician at West Coast General Hospital to open Bosley’s pet supply store in Pacific Rim Shopping Centre. “I would never have been able to be this successful without my staff,” Cathcart said. Cathcart and her partner, Garth Hamilton, had just bought the Brick and were thinking of another business to build in Port Alberni. Cathcart, a dog owner, was a frequent customer at Bosley’s in Victoria and at the time she felt there was a need for a similar store in Port Alberni. Since they opened, Bosley’s has raised $15,000 for various animalrelated charities. “The generosity of our customers is amazing,” she says. Groups that have benefited include the SPCA, Canadian Animal Assistance Team (CAAT) for West Coast programs, Qualicum Cat Rescue, and CARE Network. On Saturday, Sept. 21 the birthday bash begins with raffles and a cupcake fundraiser on behalf of Qualicum Cat Rescue, and continues with an SPCA hotdog sale, and small petting zoo.

EDITORIAL
The reason for Hydro spike Bills come due at BC Hydro Leaked documents indicate that BC Hydro is planning a 26 per cent rate increase over the next two years. While the BC Liberal government says the rate hike will not be that high, this is at least the third time in the past year that there has been indications of an increase. There are several concerns about this, whether the 26 per cent increase comes to fruition or not. It’s no secret that Hydro has to come up with billions of dollars to continue to upgrade the electrical utility system it operates. The infrastructure, some of which goes back to the 1960s or earlier. Hydro also wants to build the Site C dam on the Peace River, which would cost billions. At the same time, Hydro has been handicapped by the BC Liberal government. First, it has been required to make massive dividend payments to the province. These have been used to balance the provincial budget. While there may be some justification for the province occasionally taking a dividend from Hydro, the size and regularity of its demands are unprecedented. When a corporation needs to raise billions for capital projects, it makes sense that dividends be cut back or even eliminated. In addition, the dividends used to keep the deficit down. This boast ignores ever-increasing Hydro, ICBC and Medical Service Premium rates. The other handicap Hydro has is that it has been forced to buy run-of-river power from small contractors at rates far in excess of what it costs to produce its own power. The provincial government needs to stop interfering in Hydro’s business, and let it run the electric utility in the efficient manner. – Black Press
TOM FLETCHER B.C. Views
V
ICTORIA – When Christy Clark became premier in 2011, one of her first priorities was to delay steep increases in BC Hydro rates. BC Hydro was heading to the B.C. Utilities Commission to apply for rate increases totalling 32 per cent over three years. This, obviously, was a problem for an unelected premier whose single message was that she was good for families, and who faced an election in two years. The government’s Mr. Fix-It, Rich Coleman, first tried to delay a couple of expensive seismic upgrades, adding to the long history of political fiddles that pushed off expensive problems. BC Hydro’s engineers soon convinced him that if the creaky old Ruskin and Campbell River dams were to bust in a quake,
it wouldn’t be good for families downstream. Coleman scraped up some internal savings in the vast utility and met Clark’s pre-determined target of keeping rate increases below four per cent in the preelection period. Mission accomplished, as George W. Bush might have said. Then last week, an August working paper on the need for BC Hydro rate hikes was leaked. It showed BC Hydro making a case for new increases totaling 26 per cent over two years. The leak came via the Canadian Office and Professional Employees local 378, the BC Hydro inside staff union that has a history of mostly juvenile attacks on the B.C. Liberal government. Bill Bennett, the current energy minister, spent the next couple of days repeating to anyone who would listen that this initial proposal had
already been rejected, and that work was well along to make the rate increase more palatable. Perhaps it’s back to where it was in 2011. COPE 378 and the NDP played their rehearsed roles. Both tried to blame the situation on private power contracts. The union and its political front are less concerned about rising power bills than they are about holding onto the state monopoly on electricity generation. Energy industry lawyer David Austin calculates that of the proposed 26.4-per-cent increase, about 3.5 per cent can be attributed to BC Hydro buying power from private sources, at prices competitive with new public power sources such as the Site C dam. Most of it comes from the overdue repairs to those old dams, other costly projects including the addition of turbines to two Columbia River dams, and deferred

debt from previous political meddling. In August I reported that as many as 20 of BC Hydro’s existing private power purchase contracts will be cancelled or deferred. This was also seized upon to portray private power as the root of all evil, both financially and environmentally. In fact the attrition rate on these projects has always been about one out of three. This is what happens when the risks of expanding the provincial electrical grid are shared with private investors. These run-of-river and wind projects were promoted to maximize clean energy sources, as well as to spread the grid to remote areas. This was Gordon Campbell’s climate change strategy. Then came the gas boom. Clark seized upon liquefied natural gas exports as the key to future prosperity, and the government soon declared burning gas “clean” as long as it facilitates LNG production.

Bennett now acknowledges that gas-fired power plants are an option for the future. They are cheaper than hydro, small or large. Bennett’s two tasks are to supply industry with cheap power and get consumer rates
under control. It looks as if the gas is being turned up, and Site C is moving to the back burner. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalNews.com Twitter:@tomfletcherbc tfletcher@blackpress.ca

transportation infrastructure on Vancouver Island.
To the Editor,
I do hope and believe the federal and provincial ministers, MPs and MLAs are fully informed on the issue of the E&N Railway and recognize fact from fiction. A writer from Qualicum Beach warns VIA not to return to the island due to the condition of the track. Yet, the whole idea is the federal government has said VIA must sign an agreement to return before the funding is released to fix the tracks. The track is in terrible shape, not even CPR and RailAmerica before they left a decade ago. It has only gotten worse as the ICF has tried over and over to secure funding to fix the right of way without success. Maybe it’s time we stop setting up false catch22s and spreading misinformation and intrigue and actually have a conversation about responsible investment in key

Just say ‘no’ to Quebec To the Editor,
I guess Quebec is off my bucket list of places to visit, as my spiritually diverse “religious jewelry” may run afoul of the “Profusely Quirky” party’s new so-called “Charter of Values”, if it’s enacted . For though I honour Jesus Christ for originally awakening my spirituality by wearing a cross (a Celtic one to honour my pagan roots), in deference to my basic ecumenical nature it’s nestled next to a crescent moon and star to honour Islam, an Ankh to honour a sense of Egyptian ancestry, and a Hawaiian “lei palaoa” or whaletooth-shaped pendant to guard my Mana (life-force). Wearing religious symbolism is not a statement that one is holding their beliefs out as some kind of “logo”, advertising it. It’s a demonstration
of personal devotion. After all, we are all merely spiritual beings—here in this lifetime to have our own individual and personal “human experience” while we love, honour, and respect each other’s God-given diversity.
Liz Stonard, Port Alberni
What is parity to government To the Editor,
Should the provincial government overrule Transport Canada’s expertise and inspections in determining if the Martin Mars water bomber is fit for service? If the Mars is as good or even beats the competition, is mothballing it considered age discrimination? If contractors must compete for work and the low bid wins, should CEOs also bid on WCB, ICBC, BC Hydro, ferries, hospital and government jobs? Since the government doesn’t have to compete because it’s a monopoly and it
simply raises rates and/or taxes, should government workers be paid as much as the private enterprise export industry that determines Canada’s currency? An industry that must compete on the world market and for which the work is statistically more hazardous, strenuous and stressful. International Woodworkers of America (IWA) members got three days’ bereavement, while Ontario teachers are allowed up to six weeks. The same IWA members seeking better pensions were asked by a MacMillan Bloedel bean counter if they wanted their earnings to go in their pension or wage pocket. If pensions are a deferred wage, should tax money fund government pensions and benefits that private sector can’t afford? If the private sector got parity with the public sector, would annual sick pay take up the time allotted for it and could 10 per cent more people be hired? Do we not all bleed the same, and
will private sector always be relegated to the back seats on Canadian buses? To attain the one big union Red dream, should everyone join a government union or would it break the country just like the USSR? Which political party will free us at last? If the playing field was levelled, could retirees get parity with some overpopulated, resource poor European countries that are paying higher pensions than Canada?
R. Frankow, Port Alberni

The Way ForWard Let us walk together through this important week in British Columbia. This week we turn our attention to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings in Vancouver, to listen, to be tender-hearted, and to pray for healing and forgiveness. On September 22nd the first National Walk of Reconciliation will happen in Vancouver. Walking together is a way to move forward in a way that will bless our children and grandchildren, says Chief Dr. Robert Joseph. Walking together builds community. For those unable to travel to Vancouver, there are two local opportunities to pray and /or walk together in solidarity with those in Vancouver. On September 22nd Alberni Valley United Church will host a short prayer service at 10:30 am followed by a walk through the forest starting at 11:15 am. Trinity Anglican-Lutheran Church service begins at 10:00 am with a walk to follow at 11:30 am. Please! Come! Let’s walk together. Chief Dr. Robert Joseph said, “Let’s find a way to belong to this time and place together. Our future, and the well-being of all our children, rests with the kind of relationships we build today.” Mahatma Ghandi said, “ Our future depends on what we do in the present.” Jesus said, “ Love one another.”

o celebrate my 71st birthday my Wife took me to the Golden Dragon Buffet for dinner (she paid). As we entered the restaurant vestibule I noticed a sign. While waiting to be seated I whispered to my wife, “What do they mean, ‘Smile, you are on G-D Damn camera?/” Her reply was, “They mean ‘Smile, you are on Golden Dragon camera.’” That sums up being 71 to me. The VV (Vespa virgin) and I are still going around Port Alberni, taking photographs with my magical 10–20-millimetre extreme wide angle lens. In the meantime we have been travelling to the new beach periodically to take photos of the slow process to convert My favourite alltime place in Port Alberni is our jewel called Harbour Quay. The quay never disappoints: there are always things going on, the clock tower, tourists, the regulars sitting outside the coffee shop, Judy’s Mexican Restaurant, the new Centennial Pier breakwater, and of course the view down the inlet. Next on my nonexisting list was Clutesi Haven Marina where thankfully there were only a few people around (I say thankfully because there is nothing as annoying as someone asking “what are you photographing” while I am focusing the lens). I got some wonderful shots of water, wharf, and boat. In my VV travels up Kitsuksis, I got invited to see an incredible
‘My favourite all time place is Harbour Quay.’ handmade Second World War anti-aircraft carrier model. The elevators with the airplanes work, the guns swivel, all due to numerous electric motors in the four-foot-long ship. The veteran I visited said that it took him five years to create this remote controlled model. (I do not want to mention his name because I haven’t asked him if he wants the publicity.) When I stop , park, and padlock my VV there is usually someone around with comments and questions like “Nice scooter” (it’s an Italian Vespa), “How long can you travel on a charge?” (the VV is gas powered)), “How fast can you go?” (about 90 kms), “What size engine?” (150 cc) and “How much to fill the tank?” ($6 and I get about 70 miles per gallon). I travelled from Richmond to Port Alberni for a tank of gas and of course I had the choice on the ferry to be first on and first off. The fare was $25 for the VV and nothing for me (seniors rates--- free); Lesley had to pay $52 for the Ford Explorer. Lesley thinks that I should call these columns with the VV “Man about Town.” Ha, ha! Any questions? E-mail me at nsilverstone@ telus.net or see me online at www. silverstonephotos. com. Solda not sold on pot From / A6 “There was a time when we decided liquor was not going to be available to public, that Rock and Roll is something we shouldn’t dance to, so I wonder if it’s because of age.” One of Solda’s major concern is security of the grow-op and the distribution facility as she does not want to see taxpayers on the
UBCM hook for policing and inspection. She also questioned how much more policing will be required as marijuana usage does impair drivers and people should not have to be exposed to secondhand marijuana smoke. “Marijuana comes in a pill form as well,” Solda
explained. “I don’t think there is a breathalyzer test for marijuana. I don’t think this whole thing has been thought out.” Mayor John Douglas said he was not aware of a second party looking to set up a medical marijuana dispensary in the city and referred questions about it to the city manager.

Principles For Living by Dr. Carl Weber, BPE (Hon), DC “Just Call Me Mama” “Just call me Mama. Everyone else does”, she chirped. The young lady in front of me was in her late 70’s. She was four foot nothing with that wrinkly wizened look of the Star Wars character Yoda. She emanated the quiet wisdom of the matriarch she was. I already knew her story because I was adjusting most of that family. In fact, it had taken that whole family and especially her grandson, a recently graduated massage therapist, years of arm twisting before she came in to have her spine and nervous system checked. Now she sat in front of me. Over the years, her heart and lung health had been rapidly deteriorating. We both knew in that unspoken way that Chiropractic was a last resort. And Mama was known as a very stubborn person. I heard later that the odds among her family were strong that she would not return for a second visit. It took roughly six weeks of adjustments before she looked me in the eye and said “I’m breathing deeper. Think it’s anything you’re doing?” After four more weeks she asked if it was possible that her heart could beat stronger and that she could have a more youthful zest for at least a day after each adjustment? I reminded her that, yes, the nerves from the spine play a strong role in sending healthful messages to her organs. But rather than attempting to fix her heart, I was adjusting the subluxations in her spine in order to send a stronger and more healthful nerve supply to her heart. I also told her I was glad she was under medical care and that those regular checkups could help save her life. I continued to adjust Mama until February of 2005 when I left practice in Ontario. She swore that despite her advanced heart disease , the adjustment led to at least a week of renewed energy that was dramatic. It was also medically impossible but that didn’t stop life’s longing for itself as the adjustment assisted her body to rebuild and make itself well. “I’m too stubborn to die” I can hear her say clearly now like that first day so many moons ago. Thanks for the lessons Mama. I was lucky to have known you. Peace, Carl

Jamie Amos, right, raised a whopping $3,692.01 for the Terry Fox Run on Sunday and is seen here with Rob Dalton of the Lions Club and main organizer of the event. Amos has raised $9,456.55 since he first started fundraising in 2006. Paul Brandl participates every year in the Terry Fox Run and this year he tackled the 10 K and came in first. He was first out and first in.

Julie Martel came in second in the 10K run for Terry Fox at the Legion Branch# 293.
Keith Baldwin and his daughter Taryn, 8, went for their first run this year. They have participated in school runs before but not the main Terry Fox Run.

Bulldogs make some moves Final regatta It’s been a busy week for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs as they lost a player and a goaltending coach. The Bulldogs announced that Teal Burns has committed to play of the University of Guelph in the CIS this season. “We are extremely proud and happy for Teal that he will continue getting a top university education while playing CIS hockey,” said Bulldogs head coach Kevin Willison. “Teal worked very closely with educational advisor Tom McEvay during his short time with us just to qualify to play at the university level.” The 20-year-old forward was acquired from the Cowichan Valley Captials for future considerations at the trade deadline last season. Bulldogs also announced goalie coach Matt Korchmar would not have his contract renewed for this season. The team has instead hired Alex Evin as its new goalie coach. Evin worked as a goalie coach after a successful collegiate career at Colgate University where he earned an English degree. He’s worked with the Trail Smoke Eaters, the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in the KIJHL, and the BCIHL league champion Selkirk College Saints. If Evin’s name sounds familiar that’s because he played with Powell River, Williams Lake, and Penticton Vees over his five-year career. He garnered BCHL All Rookie Team, top academic player, top goaltender honours, as well as a Fred Page Cup. Evin will remain an advisor with the Selkirk Saints.
Ladies scramble for Ty Watson House LINKS: | Ladies scramble on the horizon. The Alberni Golf Club’s Tuesday Business Ladies are holding their year-end wind-up scramble on Sunday, Sept. 29. Again this year, they are also holding a Ty Watson House
◆ GOLF fundraiser at the same time. Last year, with Scotiabank on board matching funds, the group raised $10,748.98 for Ty Watson House. “We are setting the goal a little higher this year and going for $12,000,” Kathy MacDonald said.
The scramble takes place at the Alberni Golf Club on Sunday, Sept. 29. Festivities kick off with a raffling off of prizes from generous local merchants, businesses and individuals. At 1 p.m., there will be a closest to the pin (K.P.) shoot-out for all the K.P. winners
3509 3rd Avenue
during the season. The nine-hole scramble of fun golf starts at 2 p.m. followed by dinner. After dinner, there will be the year-end prizes, the day’s prizes and raffle draws—all benefiting Ty Watson House. Women are invited to participate (sorry, guys, you can’t play
but you can buy tickets), and have a great time. The theme this year for the scramble is “Pajama Party”. Just stop by or call the pro shop (250-723-5422) to sign up on your own or register a whole team (four women per team). Please call the pro shop for more details.

RUTHERFORD, JAMES (JIM) FENTON ~ Nov. 29, 1915 - Sept. 4, 2013 IM passed away peacefully at the West Coast General Hospital with his family at this side following a brief illness at the age of 97. Predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of 57 years, Evelyn (nee Hansen); his father and mother John and Anne Rutherford; brother Zealandia Phillip; sisters Inez Mander, Lorraine McLean, Audrey Goldie; sons-in-law Glen Stewart and David Evans. He is survived by his children, sons Jim Rutherford (Jeannine) and Ken Rutherford (Phyllis), daughters Anne Evans and Lynn Stewart (Tom); sisters Tui McMurtrie, Jaqueline Ross, Bonnie Turner; eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Jim was born in South Wellington, BC and moved to Nanaimo in 1927 before his final move to Port Alberni in 1934. His first job was at the new BS&W sawmill (later renamed the Somass) where he would eventually learn his trade as a welder. He worked hard and took great pride in his work for which he was rewarded with a promotion to Machine Shop Supervisor at the A.P.D. mill in 1959. He continued to work there until his retirement. Jim met Evelyn Hansen; they were married in 1941 and eventually raised their family of 4 children in their Port Alberni home. Jim and Evelyn loved music and dancing and they could always be found on a dance floor somewhere. Although Jim was an accomplished violinist, Jim’s other love from childhood was soccer. He played for many years on local teams. Jim would play any sport he could find. He loved to keep fit and exercised right up until the end of his life. Jim loved and was very proud of his family and would always take them to visit and enjoy other family members near and far. He served in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals for the Canadian Army during the Second World War, and was a very proud Legion member. Many will remember that he love to take part in the annual polar bear swim, which he proudly did fourteen times. Jim’s words of wisdom; “Treat others as you would like to be treated – you can’t ask for more than that” Jim enjoyed life and anyone who met him would usually catch his smile and enjoy a laugh. He was never shy about talking to strangers and could enjoy a conversation wherever he was. He would say “Most people will talk to you if you talk to them first”. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Chapel of Memories Funeral Home, 4005 6th Ave., Port Alberni. Cremation has taken place. A celebration will follow at the Italian Center from 2:00 to 8:00pm. Internment in Greenwood Cemetery’s “Field of Honor” will take place at a later date. Stories and condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.chapelofmemories.ca. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to ask that you make a donation in Jim’s memory to the West Coast General Hospital Foundation or the Alberni Valley Hospice Society.

Vermiculite is a silver-gold to gray-brown shiny mineral that was commonly used as insulation, especially in older homes. Some vermiculite insulation contains asbestos fibres that, when inhaled, can cause severe lung disease. To be safe, if you have vermiculite insulation, do not disturb it. Instead call a professional to determine whether asbestos is present and if so, have it removed. ProPacific Hazmat Services are experts in vermiculite assessment and removal.
