Students, community quickly completed playground project by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News
More than 50 “energetic little bodies” working at Beacon Hill Community Playground last Wednesday afternoon ensured landscaping at the site was completed in just over an hour, according to project manager Abigail Schimke. The children were all students of Lighthouse Christian Academy, behind which the brand new playground is located. With the exception of a preschool and a kindergarten class, the school’s entire student body helped lay sod and do other landscaping duties. “With all the kids at our school, it didn’t take very long,” said Schimke, who handles finance at the school. “The kids were great. They were all energetic and willing to help.” Leading the children were four crew workers from the Town of Sylvan Lake.
They levelled dirt before sod laying began, and also brought plenty of rakes and shovels for their many helpers. Sod laying began around 2 p.m., and finished just after 3 p.m. Schimke and other organizers were anticipating a much later finish at around 6 p.m. Help from community members and members of Gospel Chapel also helped speed things up. Planning for the project began when Lighthouse Christian Academy received a Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) grant to help fund building of a playground. Schimke said the school had the grant for “quite a while” and had troubles finding someone to match it. “We weren’t able to come up with the funds to match it, because it’s a matching grant,” she said. At that point, town councillors Sean McIntyre and Dale Plante helped bring the issue to council, and the town agreed
to match the CFEP grant because the playground is situated on town land. A location near the school and the new Beacon Hill subdivision proved ideal, and was thought to be beneficial to both students of the school and children of the community. “This is the best scenario with us having the park as close to our school as possible, but it being on town land,” said Schimke. “It was a win-win for everybody, because Beacon Hill doesn’t have a playground yet and it really facilitates all of the new development here.” Schimke feels the playground will benefit Gospel Chapel members, as well as other residents of, and visitors to, Sylvan Lake. “It ended up working out great,” she said. “It’s great for the school, it’s great for the church and it’s great for Beacon Hill. “In a town where the demographics are young people and young families, playgrounds are a great thing.”

To recreate our stepping stone design idea featuring fall leaves, follow the instructions below: Purchase 18–inch–by–18–inch square concrete stones from a masonry/stone yard. Select several designs of leaf stamps from a local art supply store, along with several 1–inch to 1½–inch foam brushes. Use the foam brushes to apply Benjamin Moore Concrete Stain (072) to the stamps. Blot stamps onto newspaper to absorb excess stain. Carefully but firmly press the stamps onto the concrete steps in a random, fallen–leaf pattern.

Banner year for Terry Fox community run by Scott McDermott Special to Sylvan Lake News
It was a banner event for Sylvan Lake’s Terry Fox Run! I brought the Terry Fox Run to Sylvan in 2006, because I thought it was silly to have to drive to Red Deer, and our community had grown enough to host the event. Back then we ran from H. J. Cody High School, and just went along the sidewalks in a large square. We had 12 volunteers, and 16 runners that year. Rae-Anne Ornella took over run director duties for several years when my triathlon schedule prevented me from doing so, and she moved the event to the newly developed Leader Field. Over the years the run has seen as many as 25 or 30 runners, and some crazy weather to boot. Sunday though, everything was perfect! Taking back over the run and having the amazing location of Centennial Park, on a sunny Sunday we saw a record 74 runners and 11 volunteers. Sunny 94 announced the event, and through Facebook and email we were able to contact more people than ever. We raised $2,465 for the Terry Fox Run, one of the highest totals I can remember. A big thanks to all the volunteers and participants for making the event so successful! I look forward to future years as things continue to grow.
Students at Sylvan Lake area schools will be participating in their own Terry Fox Runs later this month. The run at École Mother Teresa School takes place tomorrow (Sept. 20). Poplar Ridge, C. P. Blakely, Benalto and Steffie Woima schools have runs scheduled for Sept. 26, according to school newsletters.
$2,465 raised - Sylvan Lake’s community Terry Fox Run attracted record participation Sunday morning with 74 runners and 11 volunteers, according to organizer Scott McDermott. They raised $2,465 for Terry Fox Foundation through the event. At the Centennial Park start line young cyclists were first away followed by runners and walkers of all ages. Beautiful warm weather contributed to the success of the day. School students will be participating in their own Terry Fox Runs later this month. STEVE DILLS

Ongoing battle against bullying As if we needed another reason to denounce bullying, a new study has found that bullies are more likely to be diagnosed with a serious illness than non-bullies. Interestingly however, those who have been both bullied and bullies are even more likely to suffer similar hardships as adults than those who have only bullied. According to the study, adults who have been on both sides of the bullying equation as children are six times more likely to be diagnosed with a serious illness, have trouble holding down a steady job, or have difficulty interacting socially with others than those who have not been exposed to bullying at all (although how anyone goes throughout their entire childhood without being exposed to bullying is a complete mystery). This presents an interesting paradox. If children are bullied and do not retaliate, they are pushovers and the targets of further bullying. If they do
retaliate, they become bullies and face the same problems and consequences of them. Can victims of bullying stand up to bullies without becoming bullies themselves? Of course they can. In fact, it is the only way to stop the bullying problem. But they can’t do it alone. People like to think that bullying is a problem that affects a narrow range of people for only a short period of their lives. They are wrong. Bullying is a problem that affects everyone and as such will only disappear when everyone stands together to combat it. Everyone who is bullied is someone’s brother or sister or son or daughter. That means bullying affects more than just the bullied and the bullies, albeit not directly. This study is just one more piece of evidence to support the fact that the effects of bullying are lifelong. What will the effects be on those
children of adults who were bullies or bullied? Every day, the evidence is piling up that bullying is a growing problem that is a lot more dangerous than we thought. And with the Internet, email, Facebook and Twitter, sadly the bullies out there have a whole new range of ways to hurt others. There’s been plenty of talk about the horrors of cyber bullying — with many tragedies as some youth are crushed under the onslaught of online assaults and take their own lives. It’s easy for bullies to attack others behind the safety of a computer screen. Ultimately, it is long
past time that we started taking this problem more seriously and started thinking of some real effective solutions – Lacombe Express

Now a good time to consider smoke-free playgrounds, other areas Dear Editor, I wonder how many people know that Red Deer City Council recently passed revisions to its Smoke Free Bylaw that further protect the health of children in playgrounds and other public facilities? Changes to the Red Deer bylaw took effect in July and go beyond seriously weak provincial rules to restrict smoking in any public venue where children might be present — including playgrounds, seasonal skating rinks, skate parks, sport fields, water spray parks and toboggan hills. Smoking is detrimental to human health, both for the smoker and for those in their vicinity. Smoking in the presence of children helps reinforce for these impressionable young minds that smoking is an adult social norm

that all children can aspire to. The tobacco industry continuously panders to young smokers through the introduction of flavoured cigarettes, smaller (and thus cheaper) “kiddie packs”, and with so called “electronic cigarettes”. While the Red Deer bylaw does provide penalties for those who smoke in the presence of children, the focus remains on education rather than enforcement. I personally believe this is as it should be. The Red Deer bylaw encourages individuals to work within a framework that considers both the smoker and the nonsmoker while also recognizing that children deserve special care and protection. Do our own children deserve any less? Perhaps now is a good time to
raise the idea of a similar bylaw for the protection all children within the Town of Sylvan Lake, both residents and visitors alike. We have a number of new candidates running for town council and I am hopeful that fresh minds will be open to new ideas; and

Attempting to restrict access for local boaters on south half of lake Dear Editor, As a Red Deer county taxpayer and frequent user of the Half Moon Bay (RR 21) boat launch for the past 10 years I feel the need to “wade” in on the subject of closing the RR 21 boat launch. One of the issues linked with Red Deer County’s attempt to close this launch is garbage and litter left behind. There are many more people use this area than just boaters (the little beach area may currently be the longest on Sylvan Lake). Most boaters take their refuse home in the boat. About one year ago, as I was loading my boat onto the

trailer, I witnessed a small shiny dark coloured car come from the cabin area towards the lake. The car turned and stopped near the onsite garbage can, a well dressed woman got out and deposited a large bag of domestic/ household garbage in the already full can and left. If summer villages do not have garbage pickup, and people choose to make their cabins their second homes, they should be responsible for their garbage, not Red Deer County taxpayers. At a time when Lacombe County and other Central Alberta lakes are building new boat launches and promoting use of their lakes, Red Deer County and the Town of Sylvan Lake are attempting to restrict access for local boaters and visitors to the south half of the lake. Developers have done a great job of making the $40 launch very user un-friendly. Boaters have to make a blind right hand corner as they approach their trailer. Different types of boats steer very differently at slow speeds, and there is no truck/trailer parking provided for that $40. The average working person getting home around 6 p.m. has less than one hour to take their kids fishing and be off the launch property by 7p.m. Is this the kind of family town we want? Pigeon Lake Provincial Park has a great boat launch and parking, (free too!).

Myself and others enjoyed taking over boats (and business) there this summer. We feel the Town of Sylvan is forcing locals and tourists to take their business elsewhere, (check closed buildings and vacant lots downtown). We would prefer to enjoy our time locally. Many friends who visited Sylvan frequently in the summer now go to Pine, Glenifer and Ghost lakes, etc. Elections are soon, it is time for taxpayers to make their vote count. P.S. In most democratic societies locally elected officials have a duty to
lobby (for their constituents) the governing departments, provincially and federally. These include Alberta Transportation (highways, intersections, traffic control lights), Alberta Heath Services (urgent care and hospitals), and Oceans and Fisheries Canada (water level control). The City of Calgary has stated that it is going to “work” on the Bow River, I suspect they will not take a lot of advice from Oceans and Fisheries. Ken Somerville, Sylvan Lake

Provincial department controls water level decisions for Sylvan Lake Dear Editor, Re: Jurisdiction over lake levels. David Spencer, Aug. 29. In this letter Mr. Spencer admonishes us not to bother our council with lake levels. He writes there is nothing they can do. Fisheries and Oceans have the sole jurisdiction over all lakes. He invited anyone with concerns to phone Hon. Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans at Sarnia, Ont. On Sept. 5 I took his advice and phoned the number listed. After a lengthy discussion with a lady named Angela, she was able to determine that Fisheries and Oceans do not have any control over Sylvan Lake. Angela gave me a number (1-800-622-6232) to call that is for Environment Canada’s Water Surveys of Canada information. Another long discussion with a man named Lezin
and his research eventually found that Environment and Sustainable Resource Development of Alberta have jurisdiction for the waters of Sylvan Lake. He gave me the number to call (310-0000) for the department. On calling this number I was assured that Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development has this jurisdiction. However I would have to talk with the regional office in Red Deer (403-340-7052). Now, after phoning all across Canada I find the people in control of water for Sylvan Lake are right in Red Deer. In a discussion with a person in this office, I was very pleased to find that they are working to find a solution to remedy the high water problem as soon as possible. In reality it seems that the old timer Al Hallgren is right about who controls the water resources in Alberta. Way to go Al, keep on writing. Another point in

David Spencer’s letter has me shaking my head. He writes that in 2003 when he moved here everyone was lamenting about how low the lake was at that time. On discussing this with many longtime residents, no one can recall anyone ever complaining that the lake was too low. Why would they? If we could turn back the clock to 1988, I have pictures that show the lake at a very desirable level. I sincerely hope that this letter will clear up some misunderstandings about the control and management of our lake. We, as residents, do have a say in what happens on our lake and our voice is through our council. Do not be afraid to be heard and please vote! Dale Mannix, Sylvan Lake

Evans brings volunteer experience, goals to council candidacy by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
With a breadth of volunteer activities and experience in Sylvan Lake to his credit, Neil Evans decided to add his name to the selection of candidates for town council. He’s currently a member of the town’s Municipal Planning Commission and has served on the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, Economic
Development, Centennial Park design and Centennial Street design development steering committees and Friends of Sylvan Lake Provincial Park. “I’d like to advocate for arts and culture and work towards new indoor and outdoor performance spaces as additional attractions for Sylvan Lake,” he said. Other goals include attracting new clean industries and promoting the concept of a family care clinic that includes an emergency department and space for
air ambulance service. As well, he’d “promote a more responsive land ambulance service”. Safety on our roads is a concern Evans raised. He’d like to address issues such as pedestrian crossings, school zone loading and consider the possibility of using photo radar against “speeders and drag racers on our streets”. Evans has lived in Sylvan Lake for the past 16 years and is employed at Spartek Systems as their purchasing manager.
Recently married, he has a strong background in broadcast engineering. Other organizations he’s been involved with include as an executive board member and concert hall committee chair for Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, church council board member at St. Mary’s & St. Timothy’s Anglican Church and advisor to Lacombe Performing Arts Centre Foundation. He’s promoted formation of Sylvan Lake Arts Alliance.

Managing town debt and ‘wants’ a priority for Parsons by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Graham Parsons has learned a lot in his first term as Sylvan Lake councillor and hopes to represent residents during another term. “What I learned is how the whole process works. I learned so much about other facets of the community, how all the threads come together with various groups. Volunteers — I didn’t know how they fit with the fabric of the community,” he said. “All the soft services, they’re intricate — the amount of volunteer people involved who make the community tick.” He’s also learned, “in this position you have to have respect — respect for people who have concerns, respect for everybody’s opinion. Just because it’s not mine doesn’t mean they’re wrong. People are passionate about their opinions, you have to address them.” Parsons said the town’s Centennial celebrations have “really opened my eyes tremendously. This community is special.” He referred to John Treleaven’s performance as Alexandre Loiselle when he looked back at 100 years. “He talked about the schools, one teaches French, all the people, all the roads, all
the facilities, yet one thing remains constant,” Parsons remembered. “The lake, at sunrise when is sparkles like diamonds, when sunset burnishes the water. That’s the one constant we have, why I believe we’re the fastest growing community and it resonates with me. We’re fortunate to have an involved community on a lake.” Change is another constant. “A lot of people hate change, but I love change,” said Parsons. “I’ve always liked growth. I like it when people visit my community, like it when people move to my community, then I know there’s something right about my community. “As we move forward there will be a lot of issues four years ago I wouldn’t have fathomed thinking about.” Big things, he predicted, will be regional sewer and water services — going to the river for water, infrastructure things to manage growth. “Right now we’ve pretty much taken care of core services, public works, administration, police, fire. The rest are wants — necessary wants — the multiplex development is coming along. It will replace what we have positioned to help with development and regrowth of the downtown area.” Parsons said just as Edmonton is putting a complex downtown, Sylvan is maintaining its recreation hub in the
Graham Parsons
core. “Downtown is another priority of mine.” With economic development and tourism strategies, he believes the necessary work has started. Other areas of town, the east and Lakeshore Drive are already being looked after, he said. “An important part of the town’s operations is keeping the debt ratio where you have to, to
manage the wants. It’s pretty healthy right now, but it doesn’t take much to put it in a less healthy position.” He believes another priority, urgent care is moving along. On the controversial topic of Highways 781 and 20, he said, “let’s push (the province) to finish the project” (swinging 781 over to join 20 and constructing an interchange) but admitted “the problem is the province has no money”. Parsons has lived in the Sylvan Lake area for 40 years and is owner and operator of Sylvan Lake Summer Hockey Camp. Married to Bonnie, they have two adult children and one granddaughter. He’s also the Zone 4 director for Hockey Alberta.
Now’s an opportune time to leave council: MacVicar by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Three term Sylvan Lake councillor Ken MacVicar has decided not to run in the coming municipal election. “It’s an opportune time to leave council,” he said. “I’ve had three good terms with lots of changes over the last nine years. A lot of initiatives started when I first got elected in 2004 have come to fruition.” One of the major issues he is proud has been resolved is the idea that Sylvan Lake is just a party town. During weekends in 2005 and 2006 “we saw almost riots downtown”, he said. With work by council, RCMP and businesses in the area “we’ve turned the corner. Sylvan Lake is more family friendly now”. “Seeing Lakeshore Drive revitalized is the most striking example of change,” he added. Another is Railway Promenade Park which was “probably one of the biggest eyesores. Now it’s a good place to park and walk through the community.” Another big project completed was the new town hall. “I sat there the other day for the first time. That kind of facility compared with what we had … Sylvan
Lake deserved that kind of change, a building we can be proud of.” “Now is a good transition. It’s not often, as a councillor, you’re able to see change over a period of time, some things you were part of.” He added his energy level was “not quite what it was during the first two terms. You can’t keep it up.” MacVicar said new blood on council is always good. There will be at least two new councillors following the election after Councillor Sean McIntyre decided to run for mayor leaving his councillor position open. “I’d like to thank the people of Sylvan Lake for electing me to three terms,” said MacVicar. I appreciate their support over nine years. “The community is heading in the right direction. We’re seeing a bit of revitalization in the downtown core, it will happen.” One of MacVicar’s passions has been his involvement with Sylvan Lake Lodge Foundation. “I would like to stay on as a member at large. If there’s a place for me, I would certainly consider staying on there,” he said. He’s been involved in seniors housing for over 30 years with provincial and local groups.

Legacy art project involved over 150 students by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
One of the highlights of the grand opening of Sylvan Lake’s new town hall will be unveiling of the Centennial legacy art project which features the ideas and talents of more than 150 Grade 7 students. Those students are also immortalized in the artwork. Their signatures appear in the sand which forms the bottom of the masterpiece. Kathy Inglis, one of the Centennial committee members working on the project, said the central image is of parents in old fashioned bathing suits looking at youngsters in current day suits on a background of water and waves. Then the students’ artwork is presented in 10 clusters of different subjects. While not all submissions were used in the collage, each and every one is represented in binders which will be on display at the town office, schools, archives and library. “It’s been interesting on many fronts,” said Inglis of the project. “Metro Graphic Design Group has been awesome to deal with.” The company was chosen with assistance of three local artists after the town’s Centennial committee called for proposals twice. While she said they haven’t seen the finished artwork, they have an idea what it’s going to look like. A team of four people from Metro Graphic is arriving in town tomorrow (Friday) to assemble the finished project. Students from Sylvan Meadows Adventist School, Lighthouse Christian Academy, École Fox Run School and École Mother Teresa Catholic School as well as home schooled students all submitted artwork and poetic writing for the project. “This is a cool and unique opportunity you have to put your imprint on Sylvan Lake for the next 100 or 200 years,”
said École Fox Run School vice principal Darren Pickering when students were first introduced to the project last December. At that presentation Doug Driediger of Metro Design, told students the finished work will tell a story about Sylvan Lake. He also guided them on a journey to learn mind mapping and how to create their contribution for the project. The grand opening of the town’s municipal government building will take place from 4-7 p.m. next Wednesday (Sept. 25) with an official ceremony at 5 p.m. Inglis added the deadline for submissions to the “Remembering Sylvan Lake 100th Centennial Art Contest” is next Monday (Sept. 23). There are two categories — high school and middle school — for creation of two dimensional mediums in colour or black and white. “Help us remember people, events, buildings and landmarks from our history”, encouraged a poster circulated to teachers and youth leaders outlining the contest.

green when the intersection is clear. The sign is too small! With a dedicated turning lane drivers may think green still means they have the right of way at all times. Secondly, drivers going west on Highway 11 get a warning light indicating that the light will turn red. I have observed that most drivers have two choices depending how far back from the warning light they are. They either slow down to stop or speed up to get through the light. Speeding up does not bode well for eastbound cars turning left onto Highway 20, especially since vehicles going west are coming over a hill. A tentative solution to try would be to continue with the green turning arrow but then to have the turning light turn red instead of green. Most drivers understand red, I hope. Marijuana, cocaine, cash found during vehicle search; charges laid Saturday, September 7th 7:33 a.m. – A 20-year-old Red Deer female was issued a driver’s suspension as a result of strict alcohol-related driving conditions. Police observed several females getting into a vehicle on Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake with the driver having difficulties starting the vehicle. The female was found to have been drinking and was driving under a GDL licence, which is not allowed. As a result, her vehicle was towed and she was issued a suspension. 10:02 p.m. – RCMP attended a residence on Falcon Ridge Drive in Sylvan Lake after a 29-yearold female called police to advise that her intoxicated 26-year-old ex-boyfriend had vandalized her residence by smashing a pane of glass in her front door after she told him to leave. Dear Editor, The Highway 11 and Highway 20 intersection has been improved with the addition of dedicated left turn lanes. As a former AMA driving instructor, I was pessimistic that this would solve the problem. The flaw with the intersection is twofold. Firstly, after a brief green turning arrow the light in the turning lane turns green, but the sign above the signal, in very small letters, allows left turns from Highway 11 to Highway 20 on solid
cycle north of the traffic circle when she attempted to turn around and Special to Sylvan Lake News lost control colliding with a road sign. She landed in the ditch and received injury to her leg but fortunately no other injuries were reported. 2:33 p.m. – A Sylvan Lake peace officer assisted RCMP in effecting an arrest after the officer conducted a check on a male and found him to be in breach of conditions not to possess alcoholic beverages. The 34-year-old Red Deer male was observed with alcohol on 45th Street at Lakeshore Drive and was arrested and charged with breaching his probation order. Tuesday, September 10th 2:21 p.m. – RCMP arrested a male after a Sylvan Lake peace officer stopped a vehicle on 50th Street at 44th Avenue in Sylvan Lake. The peace officer noted a strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle and contacted RCMP. A further search of the vehicle by RCMP members uncovered a large quantity of marijuana, cocaine and a large sum of cash. A 23-year-old Red Deer male has been charged with trafficking marijuana and cocaine and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Thursday, September 12th 11:59 a.m. – A two vehicle collision resulted in an elderly female being taken to hospital but fortunately no major injuries were reported. RCMP and EMS attended Highway 12 at Highway 20 in Lacombe County after an 87-year-old female proceeded from a stop sign on Highway 20 into the path of an oncoming vehicle on Highway 12 driven by a 30-year-old female. The 87-year-old female advised that she was suffering from chest pains as a result of the collision and was taken to hospital as a precaution. Charges are expected to be laid against the elderly female for proceeding unsafely from a stop sign. 11:31 p.m. – RCMP were called to a residence on Rozier Close in Sylvan Lake after a 55-year-old male reported that a female in his home was severely intoxicated and aggressive and he wanted her removed. No assault occurred and the homeowner did not wish formal charges, however, as a precaution, members arrested the female for breach of peace and lodged her in cells until sober.

Balancing needs of diverse, growing population will be a challenge: Grimson by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Maintaining a financial balance to make things work is one of the goals of Rick Grimson as he seeks a second term on Sylvan Lake Council. The population is growing so fast and is diverse as far as age and demographics, “the challenge is to find a balance that meets the majority of expectations,” he said. One of his involvements during the past term has been with regional commissions dealing with wastewater, water and garbage. “A major consideration is we need to find an alternate source of water,” Grimson said. “We’re within 5,000 population of maxing out. The regional commission is working on that, has identified possible sources. It’s going to take further studies, research and provincial money. It could become critical if it doesn’t happen in the next eight or nine years.”
The wastewater commission has progressed with a regional line along the east side of the lake which includes a sewage disposal station at the north end and a lift station at Birchcliff. The garbage commission became less active after a deal with Plasco failed to materialize. During his first term, Grimson said a lot of work Rick Grimson was on completing projects initiated by the previous council. “Lakeshore Drive, — I think that turned out very well. The town office, RCMP building. This term, “the new public works area … that was a very good decision there in purchasing that site,” he said.
Sauvegeau believes her experience would benefit councillor role by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Considerable experience in customer service, human resources, supervisory and personnel development, Wendy Sauvegeau believes will benefit her as a Sylvan Lake councillor. Meeting deadlines and dealing with budgets while maintaining credibility and accountability are things she’s done. While working with Edmonton Telephones as an instructor she volunteered with Special Olympics and the Corporate Challenge. Through that work she was asked to take a position as events coordinator at the City of Edmonton, a position she held for three years. That included organizing the mayor’s banquet, Clean Air Days, and civic awards ceremonies and banquets. The awards ceremonies were among her biggest events and challenges, organizing over 300 volunteers and planning a sit down dinner for over 2,100 people, all within a budget. “Every event had its challenges, however, budgets, deadlines, accountability and credibility were always on the agenda.” Sauvegeau said Sylvan Lake is growing at an amazing rate and the community is changing. “At this rate of growth, we will be looking at new schools to meet the growing population. A health care centre may not be a request but a necessity. Revitalizing downtown with an eye to both community and tourism being able to benefit is a real and, as I see it, an ongoing project. I would also like to see an omniplex to be used for skating, curling and the arts.” Trying to please all people at the same time is a real juggle, she admits. “Dealing with situations, budgets and difficult people is all in a day’s work for me. Persistency and con-
sistency are really, really important in a councillor’s job. I do check facts. If someone challenges me, I pick up the phone. It’s amazing what you can learn by checking.” Sauvegeau added she also returns phone calls. “I do believe in the open mic forum. You have to listen, really listen and ask questions — why would this work, when Wendy Sauvegeau should we do it, do we need it,” she said. She also believes “just because you have two pennies now doesn’t mean you have to spend them. You have to plan for the future and spend wisely.” Sauvegeau ran for town council during the last election as well

Tourists, from my perspective seem to be happy with what’s there”. Grimson has been involved in municipal administration and management his whole life. Retired now, he began in the county system and was Sylvan Lake’s chief administrative officer for 17 years before taking a position with Alberta Municipal Affairs where he served for 17 years as chief administrative officer for the province’s national parks improvement districts which included Banff, Jasper, Waterton, Wood Buffalo and Elk Island. His role there was to deliver municipal services to residents in those parks. He holds a professional designation as a Certified Local Government Manager and is a past director of the Local Government Administration Association.

“We’re proceeding with a new fire hall. It’s going to tender next spring. That’s exciting and very much needed.” Another project which is carrying over is a new multiplex. The old arena is nearing the end of its life and the new building needs to be completed, he indicated. Then there’s ongoing updating of infrastructure. “A block or two every year has to continue.” Planning for the long term will continue to be a challenge. “There will probably be some borrowing. Long term rates are favourable and the town’s debt situation is enviable. It won’t be a large burden on taxpayers.” On other issues, Grimson said he doesn’t support creating a beach but he does support a water spray park “for our own citizens in community parks.

The event was the final opportunity for community input into the strategy before it’s presented for town council ratification at the Sept. 23rd meeting. And then there were two; Prete running for councillor instead of mayor by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Sylvan Lake’s next mayor needs support of the majority of residents, said Matt Prete who announced this week he will be seeking a seat on council instead of vying for the top position. “Whoever wins the election needs a clear mandate,” he said. “I see Susan (Samson) as status quo and Sean (McIntyre) as seeking a new direction. For two of us to run on the same platform muddies the water.” Prete added that there was the possibility of he and Sean splitting the vote and then Susan winning the election without that clear mandate. “I’m supporting Sean in the election. I realize if he wins he’s going to need

- Lou Zimmerman, Kyle Zbitowsky and Debbie Babiuk properly disposed of various items collected during the Town of Sylvan Lake’s Toxic Waste Round Up Saturday. For several hours, town residents were able to drop off household items including cleaning supplies, paints and chemicals, at the town’s municipal operations building. Items were received from 82 customers — up from 57 last year. Town of Sylvan Lake public works manager John Watson was pleased so many people took advantage of the collection, and said it will be held again next year. STUART FULLARTON

help making changes. If I get on council we agree on enough things that I can help him,” Prete said. One of his biggest reasons for running is to get more engagement with the public and the community rather than an ‘us versus them’ situation. “Let’s decide together what we should do for the community. That’s a pretty important issue to me.” He noted the Pattern Book is another issue. It needs to be revisited because it’s too restrictive for businesses. “I see a lot of similarities between our campaigns,” he said of his and McIntyre’s ideas. With Prete’s decision, there are now just two declared candidates for the town’s top elected position, current mayor Susan Samson and councillor Sean McIntyre.

Amputee youngsters talked about CHAMP program, its message for them by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News
War Amps representatives spoke to students of École Our Lady of the Rosary School last Wednesday afternoon on behalf of War Amps’ Child Amputee Program (CHAMP). A video was also played for students, and Principal Jodi Smith felt it taught students a valuable lesson. “The video was on perseverance, making a difference and trying your hardest,” she said. “(It showed) that everyone can do anything, no matter what.” Echoing that sentiment were 14-year-old Cassidy and six-year-old Marcus, both amputees and members of the CHAMP Program. Marcus also attends school at École Our Lady of the Rosary. Smith felt the presentation was an appropriate way of educating other children, and satisfying their curiosity. “A lot of times, they just need to know the story,” she said. “It’s not out of meanness, it’s just out of what’s going on, and so we were trying to

eliminate that piece.” Dolores and Cyrille Paquin are both avid supporters of the CHAMP
program, and hope that its profile within the community can be raised significantly.
“It’s the program underneath the War Amps that supplies children with any prosthetics they may need throughout their whole life,” said Dolores. “It is a wonderful organization.” The organization is important as it also funds other activities for child amputees, including swimming and driving lessons, she said. Postsecondary education funding is available through scholarships. CHAMP seminars allow children to discuss with each other the ways in which they handle situations such as bullying and staring. “Everybody has different responses, but the kids all try to teach the other kids ways to deal with it when people are staring or asking questions,” said Dolores. Cyrille feels the work carried out by War Amps often goes undetected in the community. He hopes participation in the organization’s key tag program, through which the majority of its funds are raised, can increase to ensure support is available to children in need. “War Amps hasn’t turned away one person yet,” he said. “And that’s how they fund all of that it’s just from that.”

Lions defeated Rage to continue winning streak by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News
Sylvan Lake Lions bantam football team are on a three-game winning streak after defeating Rocky View Rage 68-0 on Saturday. Lions defensive co-ordinator Dave Berg said it was a “good day” for the team, but refused to get carried away by the team’s recent strong showings. Remaining focused and continuing to work hard and improve is key to keeping it up throughout the season, he said. “We’ve won all of them so far, but that comes with a bit of an asterisk,” he said. “All of them have had very small numbers.” The Lions’ strong numbers, he feels, have played a major role in their wins so far this season. Right now there are more players than they’ve ever had during his time with the team. “For the first time since I’ve been working with the team, we were able to field a starting offence and a starting defence, and not have to put anybody going both ways,” he said. “We’re pretty excited about the interest and the number of kids coming out.” Having such strong involvement means the Lions have fewer players getting tired, which also results in fewer injuries, according to Berg. When injuries do occur, there is adequate coverage. “Even with those injuries, we’ve got other guys that we can rotate in so we’re not always struggling.”

It was a tough start to the season for Sylvan Lake Bears peewee football team, who lost 54-0 against Stettler Panthers Saturday. Head coach Garnet Rambaut felt there were many factors that played into the Bears’ loss, and is anticipating a challenging season for his players. Remaining upbeat, and concentrating on the future, however, he hopes things can turn around in time for their second game in Innisfail Saturday. “Hopefully our fortunes will prove to be a little CANADIAN COURSE bit better than what they were (against Stettler),” This is the course you need to get he said. your firearms license. After Saturday’s performance against Rocky View, Berg feels that the Lions are better than they have been, but still have room to improve. Weaker areas may become evident when they play certain teams this season. “There was still some mistakes made,” he said. “Defensively, the tackling was pretty good, but there were a couple of missed tackles that
should have been in there.” Pass coverage is another area he feels needs work. “There were also a couple of times where we were fortunate that the pass wasn’t on, because the receiver was open,” he said. “We’d like to just tighten up on some of those things.” The Lions take on Strathmore at H.J. $22,000 raised through Drive “Fore” The Cure tourney by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
The Regency Flooring Drive “Fore” The Cure tournament, held Aug. 16 at Meadowlands Golf Club raised $22,000 for Canadian Cancer Society and Red Deer Cancer Clinic. Meadowlands General Manager Joel Johannson explained that last
year’s inaugural tournament was a celebration of the first year anniversary of one of the owner’s wives who had survived breast cancer. A majority of the people who attended and raised over $25,000 at that event were from Medicine Hat and other locales outside of Central Alberta. “We ran it again this year but the intent was to create a more local event. Everybody has been affected by cancer,” he said. “Sylvan Lake people stepped up really well. Regency Flooring came on as the major sponsor, brought two teams and provided arrival gifts.” It was a hot, beautiful day when 100 golfers teed off. And they were lucky to get off the golf course just before it was inundated by a huge hail storm. “Everybody had a blast,” said Johannson. The event included live and silent auctions — Troy Gillard of Big 105 was the auctioneer. Also taking an active role were many volunteers, some from the Cancer Society, others breast cancer survivors. Johannson said they’ll definitely be organizing the tournament again next year. This was the second major fundraising tournament hosted by club during the season. The Stacy Regier Memorial Tournament raised over $25,000. There were two categories for golfers. On the competitive side, Bob Bohnet, Jamie Keller, Dean Dereniuk (the club’s golf pro) and Jackie Cross won. The non-competitive side was won by Jay Schmidt, Erin Schmidt, Bryce Beresh and Ian Wilson from Johnston, Morrison, Hunter & Co. Johannson said the success wouldn’t be possible without all the sponsors and participants whom he thanked profusely.

More than $10,000 was raised at the second annual Our Lady of the Assumption yard sale over the weekend, due to the generosity of parishioners and community members who donated to the sale. A large number of items were left over, and subsequently given to various charities and community organizations. STUART FULLARTON
Yard sale brought in more than $10,000 by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News
The second annual yard sale at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church over the weekend was a huge financial success, raising over $10,000 in two days. That money will go toward building a new church which fundraising chairman Frank Steckler estimates will still take “several years”. Proceeds from the yard sale, he feels will help make a difference. “It was a lot of work, but without work, you get nothing,” he said. “It takes a long time to raise that much money.” Of the funds raised, about $2,000 came from a raffle. Steckler estimated that about 90 per cent of the items sold at the yard sale were
donated by parishioners, with further support coming from the community. Four truckloads worth of items were kept in his garage, and he and a crew of others from the church spent all day Thursday and all day Friday collecting, sorting and pricing. Despite having sold thousands of dollars worth of items, some stuff remained unsold by the end of the weekend. Those items will be donated to other places in need. “It goes to various charities, and a lot of it goes to libraries,” he said. “We don’t throw out much.” Steckler and three others from the church spent Monday loading their vehicles with remaining items for delivery to different places.
Variety of activities available, new Cody students learned by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News
Students new to École H. J. Cody School were given a warm welcome last Thursday, and learned about many opportunities available to them both inside and outside of the classroom. A pizza lunch and presentation outlining school activities were held over the lunch hour, and provided an official welcome for Cody’s newest students. “We hope you’ve enjoyed your time learning at H.J. Cody so far, and that today we will make it an even better experience,” said Breina Jones, a Grade 11 student and Leadership team member. Fellow student Heather Watson offered some welcoming words. “By the end of this lunch, we hope that you will feel a stronger sense of belonging and feel happy to be here.” Teacher Brett Gardiner introduced a welcome video, and spoke of the different ways in which students may get involved with school sports, clubs and activities. “There is some absolutely awesome
stuff that goes on here,” he said, before listing some of the things students can “be a part of at this wonderful educational institution”. He said there is a large number of sports available for students, including golf, football, curling, volleyball, basketball, cross-country running, track and field, archery, soccer and badminton. Other opportunities lie in music, drama, art and various clubs and groups. “There is so much stuff going on, and that is definitely not all of it,” said Gardiner. “This place is not just all about math and social and science and that stuff. It’s about meeting people and doing fun things. “We’re happy that you all joined us, and we’re proud to have you, so get involved and do something.” Drama teacher Jacqui Renwick was grateful to the school’s leadership students for putting on the lunch. “We’ve had lots of leadership students do this in the past, but this is the first group that has totally run with it and they did awesome,” she said. “We are a small but mighty group.”

Good weather, strong attendance for 22nd annual Harvest Festival by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News
The annual Harvest Festival at Dickson Store Museum once again brought area residents together, and attracted people from out of town to its events and activities, Sept. 8. With clear skies and a strong attendance, conditions were ideal for yet d aanother day of fun and interacting with one another, said museum manw aager Sharon Lightbown. “The weather co-operated and people came out and had a really, p rreally nice time,” she said. “They were jjust sitting and listening to the music aand chilling out.” Live music was one of several aattractions that kept visitors amused tthroughout the day, which began with aan outdoor church service. Keeping with Dickson’s Danish heritage, Danish food was served on h ssite, while vendors from all over Central Alberta sold various items C iincluding flowers, honey and produce. The occasion provided a chance ffor people to catch up with old friends, aand meet plenty of new ones, accordiing to Lightbown.

“The Harvest Festival just seems to be a time where people like to come and just sit and chat with neighbours or people that they haven’t seen in a long time,” she said. “It’s the end of summer. People just like to get together and enjoy one another’s company.” As well as being attended by locals, the festival brought in plenty of new people from out of town, said Lightbown. Now in its 22nd year, it was first held when Dickson Store Museum was officially opened by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark in 1991. Since then, it’s become an annual tradition for many people in Dickson and beyond. “People come from all over the place, but there is a lot of community here today,” said Lightbown. “People that were here certainly had a great time.” The festival is put on each year by Dickson Store Museum Society, which doesn’t make much money from it, admitted Lightbown. “It’s not a fundraiser, by any means,” she said. “We do it as part of our mandate of giving back to the community.”
