Culture & Harvest Festival returns to Lacombe BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express It’s time once again for the Culture & Harvest Festival. The Culture & Harvest Festival is a celebration of Lacombe’s agricultural heritage while also showcasing arts and culture within the City, said Organizer Marie Péron. She added it is Lacombe’s way of celebrating Alberta Culture Days and this is the
second year the festival is being held. The event will run Sept. 26-29. Up until last year, Lacombe celebrated Alberta Culture Days with smaller events that did not fit together as a festival. Following a strategic plan from the City, Lacombe Tourism is now trying to expand these festivals. Péron said that last year’s Culture & Harvest Festival set the bar for festivals to come.
“I think it was very successful. We didn’t know what to expect when we started so it was, to be quite frank, a shot in the dark.” Ellen Corea, another of the festival’s organizers, added that expanding Lacombe’s Alberta Culture Days celebration was a good idea as Lacombe had not had a fall festival for some time. Péron said that adding an agricultural side to the celebration keeps the festi-
val true to Lacombe’s background as well. “I think it’s being true to our roots, doing things that reflect what Lacombe is,” said Péron. Corea agreed, saying Lacombe’s agricultural heritage and culture seem to go hand in hand. “It’s kind of a natural partnership,” said Corea. She added there are a number of events taking place throughout the festival that will appeal to an

assortment of interests. “There is quite a wide variety both on the ag side as well as the culture side.” She added that most of the cultural programs that ran last year will be happening again with some additions. Some events that will highlight Lacombe Culture & Harvest Festival include favourites that pre-date the festival itself, like Lacombe’s Got Talent. There will also be a free community concert followed by fireworks on Saturday night. One new event Corea mentioned is an art walk where businesses will display the works of local artists in their windows. Corea added the art walk will continue a few weeks after the festival as well to give people plenty of time to see the art. On the agricultural side, some highlights include the Kraay Family Farm’s County Fair on Friday, a ranch rodeo Friday evening and the blacksmithing and horseshoeing demonstration on Saturday. Corea added that the rodeo is a
new event that fits well into the festival because, like the festival, a fall rodeo is something Lacombe hasn’t had in a long time. There are a number of other, just for fun events spread throughout town as well, including the carnival midway at Alberta Downs throughout the weekend. Péron said there shouldn’t be a problem for anyone to find activities they will enjoy. “I think there is something for everybody but that’s one of the lines that is over-used so I hate to say that,” said Péron. Events will take place all over Lacombe and into Lacombe County as well. Alberta Downs, Lacombe Memorial Centre, Lacombe Ag Ground, Michener Park and Kraay Family Farms are just a few of the locations of the many events of Lacombe Culture & Harvest Festival. ‘Rock My Science’ to outfit Central Alberta classrooms Local schools will compete for a range of cutting edge geology supplies BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express
A
t least one Central Alberta classroom is going to be getting a lot more support for their geology programs thanks to a new initiative out of Lacombe. Melissa Robak, owner and operator of Silver Cove Minerals and Gems, has launched the firstever Rock My Science contest, a program where students can win a $2,500 gift package from Silver Cove to outfit their classroom with some rocking geology supplies. Rock My Science, or the idea for it, came from previous work that Robak had done with schools, particularly Grade 3 classes, she said. She added she found there was a huge number of kids who show a passionate interest in geology, but the supplies teachers had to instruct with were lacking in Robak’s opinion. “When we were seeing what they were using to teach with, it was kind of sad,” said Robak. “The supplies were just very lacking.” She went on to say that most classrooms are outfitted with a small, standard geology kit that has, if one is lucky, 26 small specimens. She added that these kits tend to get shared between classrooms and even schools, and pieces tend to get lost. Suddenly, what was a 26-piece kit becomes a 10-piece kit and teachers have very limited resources to work with. When she had done work with schools in the past, Robak had tried to provide classes with some supplies here and there to help things along a little bit, she said. But then she got an idea. Instead of helping out a little bit here and there, she decided to put a program in place where she could completely outfit one classroom in style. “We thought wouldn’t it be nice if we could just deck one classroom out and make it like the greatest thing ever?” That idea grew to become a way of encouraging children’s interests in geology, which Robak said is substantial. “There are so many kids out
GLORIOUS GEMSTONES – Melissa Robak poses with a large amethyst cathedral in her shop, Silver Cove. there who love geology,” said Robak. “They love fossils, you know, they all want to be archeologists or geologists or paleontologists or anything along those lines. We thought why not encourage that?” Thus was born the Rock My Science contest. Robak said the contest was set up to work almost like a grant program or scholarship application. Students were to explain why rocks and minerals were important to them, whether it be in school, in day-to-day life, in future career prospects or otherwise. Robak said this was done in an effort to have the supplies go to where they are needed most. “We definitely want this to go somewhere where it’s going to be appreciated and deserved.” Originally, Robak planned to do Rock My Science strictly as
an essay contest. However, when speaking to teachers, it was suggested to Robak that children be allowed to use any medium to express their thoughts. That way, teachers could work it into other classes like art, computer sciences, or even math class. Robak said she has already learned about some creative ideas students are planning for the contest. “We are expecting to get in some submissions of artwork, we’re expected to definitely get some essays and things like that,” said Robak. “I have had a few people working on some pretty funky science equations to explain it all so it should be fun figuring those out. We are seeing a lot of different ways the teachers and students are bringing it all together and that’s what we wanted - to let that creativity shine.”
Brian Vossen/Lacombe Express
Working together with teachers, Robak has created a prize package that will help teachers out while instructing on a number of geology-related topics. “It does kind of work in with a lot of different things they learn in their science elements, because it’s not just your rocks and minerals course.” Robak added the specimens in the package will provide an upgrade from what most classrooms are used to working with. “They’re used to working with specimens that are about two inches across,” said Robak. “We’re going to set them up with a piece of limestone that is about two feet across. So then everyone in the class can scratch test rather than just watching the teacher do it.” Other fun items, like big pieces of petrified wood, ammolite,
quartz, an amethyst cathedral and geodes from all over the world will also be included in the package, said Robak. She added some of the items are also included to showcase what Alberta specifically has to offer in terms of geology. This is the first time Robak has done the Rock My Science contest, but she said she is thinking about making it an annual event. She added that the program is currently restricted to schools in Central Alberta but may expand to include other regions of the province in the future. Submissions for Rock My Science will be accepted until Oct. 5 and will then be on display during the Rocktober Gem and Mineral Show. Students in any grade are welcome to participate in the contest. news@lacombeexpress.com

Reuben Konnik wants more time to improve Lacombe BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Three years is not enough time. Those are the thoughts of Councillor Reuben Konnik and part of the reason he is running once again for City of Lacombe council. Konnik said council has accomplished some things and has got a few more projects going, but he feels that many projects are still “unďŹ nishedâ€? and there is more work to do yet. “I like where we have come and I want to be a part of what is to come yet,â€? said Konnik. There is never enough time for councils to get everything they want done in a term, said Konnik and that is the reason he and many other councillors are running again. Konnik added that he is happy the length of a term on council has been lengthened from three years to four. He said that while four years is a longer commitment, it also allows councillors to get more work done. “It takes you almost three years just to get ac-
REUBEN KONNIK climatized to the position, that’s what I found,â€? said Konnik. Konnik added that anything involving politics does not move very fast and takes time to do properly. As such, anyone wishing to make any kind of change in those avenues needs to invest a signiďŹ cant amount of time to get things done. “Politics is a slow beast, nothing happens overnight,â€? said Konnik. There are a number of things that Konnik would like to see happen in Lacombe, he said. One area that greatly needs improve-
ment, said Konnik, is that of commercial growth. “We need to get some more commercial interest in this town and we need to do more to facilitate that. Related to that, Konnik said he would like to be able to do something about Lacombe’s residential taxes. He said that preventing tax hikes wherever possible is something that he will continue to push for. “Because we don’t have that commercial tax base, we rely heavily on a residential tax base, said Konnik. “Unfortunately our taxes are high. Another thing Konnik said he wants to see is some kind of signature focal point that will bring people to Lacombe. He said that he doesn’t know yet what that might be, but suggested perhaps expanding Cranna Lake to offer more recreational opportunities or expanding Lacombe’s trail system. Konnik added that if Lacombe can attract people as tourists, it will also attract people to come live in Lacombe, which goes hand in hand with attracting com-
mercial businesses as well. “If people come to visit, they will come to stay. Konnik said his interest in politics is long-standing. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in political science and began his career in politics by serving a term on the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School Board. “I have always been in-

41 Signal Regiment executes Exercise Swift Fox BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Lacombe, Blackfalds, and several other communities in Central Alberta played hosts to some very special guests last Saturday. Although it was only for a short visit, members of the 41 Signal Regiment of the Canadian Army Reserves stopped in Lacombe and Blackfalds the afternoon of Sept. 14 as part of a relay run from Edmonton to Red Deer. Codenamed Exercise Swift Fox, the relay run saw two teams of runners take off in opposite directions simultaneously from Edmonton and Calgary at 6 p.m. on Sept. 13 to meet in Red Deer at the annual Terry Fox Run on Sept. 15. Runners began running Friday evening and ran until about 8:30 p.m., as they were not allowed to continue the run through the night, and resumed the run again in the morning. Each team carried a different commemorative message, both of which were read when the teams met in Red Deer for the Terry Fox Run. Each of the runners ran legs of five to seven km at a time. Runners ran one at time, relay carrying their team’s message. Altogether there were about 30
runners between the two teams as well as support staff in vehicles to assist the runners. The group from Edmonton reached Lacombe shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon and then continued onto Blackfalds after a brief stopover, reaching it around 3 p.m. Many of the communities in which the relay teams made stops, including Lacombe, were home to some of the members of 41 Signal Regiment. As 41 Signal Regiment is a division of the Reserve Army, its members usually have full-time careers outside of the Army as well. Master Cpl. Drew Adkins of 41 Signal Regiment calls Lacombe home. Adkins, who works as an EMT with Lacombe ambulance, said he was happy to be able to take part in the run through his own hometown. “It’s an honour to be able to sort of show appreciation that the community provides to us as soldiers,” said Adkins. “We’re all reservists in the military which means we are parttime soldiers and have full-time lives somewhere else, and the City of Lacombe has given back to me on a number of occasions for military training.”
Mayor of Lacombe Steve Christie expressed his feelings that the event was an honour on the part of the City as well. “Anytime that the Canadian Armed Forces come through and give us a plaque in honour of supporting them, it’s a great day,” said Christie. “Lacombe has had many members within the military in many different aspects and we have up and coming cadets and we will continue to support our armed forces because they fight for what we have today.” In Blackfalds, Christie’s counterpart, Mayor Melodie Stol, reiterated Christie’s thoughts that both parties, the Town and 41 Signal Regiment, were happy to show each other recognition. “I just really respect what people do when they work and volunteer for the military,” said Stol. “They were stopping by to say ‘thank you’ to us and give us recognition, so it’s the least we could do to accept that.” Capt. Brian Farkes of 41 Signal Regiment said the objective of the run was four-fold. It was a way to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the founding of Canada’s professional military communication branch, to promote physical fit-

L.A.P.A. launches final fundraising The Lacombe Athletic Park Association is beginning its push to raise money and organize funding to complete the final phase of a project that started with a dream over seven years ago. The rubberized surfaced track and accompanying field athletics facilities will have a price tag of about $1.2 million dollars. This will be the final major phase of construction and allow for new groups and an increased number of citizens to utilize the park. Marketing Chairperson Matt Panelli is excited about the new efforts to organize the funding of the final phase. “There has been a lot of interest from new running groups to get involved in our association and help us fundraise and there is still a lot of interest from the corporate community and social groups to be part of building a facility of this quality for our kids and community,” said Panelli. The L.A.P.A. has spent the last several months confirming interest in the track from user groups. MEGlobal Athletic Park is home to LCHS rugby, soccer and football teams, Central Alberta Field Lacrosse and several football organizations in Central Alberta. The facility has hosted soccer, rugby, running events, sports camps and nonsports community events in the past few years. It is expected about 40,000 people enter the facility throughout the year. The track with field event facilities will
only increase these numbers dramatically, officials say. “Over the next few months we will be meeting with the City of Lacombe and Wolf Creek School Division to gauge their interest in the final phase of our project,” said Darren Gagnon, L.A.P.A. chairperson. “The district’s schools would be a major user of the track and field facility and we want to see how much value it could be to them as a teaching and extra-curricular center, and MEGlobal Athletic Park continues to be an economic stimulant to our entire community. To date both the groups have supported our efforts and we are sure they will support us moving forward in any way they can.” The L.A.P.A. has subleased the Wolf Creek School division land from the City of Lacombe, and has fundraised for the capital construction of the facilities. They now operate MEGlobal Athletic Park with the mandate to provide a premier outdoor sports venue for minor sports in Lacombe and Central Alberta at costs far less than at other facilities in western Canada. The project has cost $4 million and the facility has a $200,000 annual budget including a capital reserve fund. To date the L.A.P.A. has raised over $2 million of this money through fundraising, private donations and corporate sponsorship and organized the rest through grants and government investment. - Vossen

‘Boomerangers’ not at fault A young man, having recently graduated with a degree from a four-year university program, moves home and back in with his parents. At dinner his first evening back with his parents, his father says, “I can’t believe my son is moving back in with his parents. You should be out making a name for yourself ! That’s what I did at your age! And your mother and I started out with nothing!” With a sigh, the young man sets down his cutlery. Thinking of his five-figure student debt, he answers his father, “Believe me, Dad, I would have loved to start out with just nothing!” It’s a situation becoming all too familiar. Young men and women graduated or graduating are moving back in with their parents and as such are being dubbed the ‘Boomerang generation.’ Members of the this generation also get a bad rap as being ‘weak’ for not being able to make it on their own right after graduation. Times are tough for new grads, but if their parents’ generation could hack it, so should the most recent crop of graduates, right? Wrong. Things may have been tough for
the parents of these ‘boomerangers’ too, but nothing like they are today. For graduates just starting their lives today, debts are greater, jobs are scarcer and cost of living is higher. With the government continuing to cut funding, post-secondary institutions are passing the cost onto the students with higher tuition fees. With few job prospects, new grads have trouble finding a decent-paying job. Without a decent job, they can’t afford to pay off that mountain of debt not to mention rent, food, or anything else. The choice seems pretty clear. Live in squalor, or live with mom and dad. Even those who don’t move back home often still can’t make it on their own and end up making frequent withdrawals from the ‘Bank of Mom and Dad’ or going to their parents to co-sign lease agreements, loans for vehicles or simply help them make rent for the month. So, the boomerang generation may be an appropriate title for those currently graduating from post-secondary institutions, but it’s not an entirely fair one. It is not the fault of these young men and women that they can’t af-
ford to live on their own. For the most part, these are people who would love to be out from under their parents’ roof and making a living for themselves.
However, they are not able to with what they have to work with. More or less, they are victims of circumstance and are limited by that sad truth.
Blackfald’s Abbey Centre to open in early 2014 It’s just around the corner and it’s going to be amazing. The Abbey Master Builder Centre, affectionately known as the Abbey Centre is Blackfald’s new fieldhouse facility that is set to open early in 2014. In only a few months, residents of Blackfalds and the surrounding area will get to experience the sense of awe and ingenuity those already involved with the project have had the privilege of experiencing. When complete, the $18 million facility will include an indoor playground, fieldhouse gymnasium, fitness centre, outdoor aquatic centre, running track, program room, fitness studios, outdoor playground and an outdoor amphitheatre. It will truly be one of Central Alberta’s premiere recreational facilities and a destination venue for several families in the area. The idea for the project started with a community needs assessment survey performed by RC Strategies in 2008. In the assessment, the community expressed a need for indoor spontaneous use facilities including a pool, fitness centre, walking track, gymnasium and indoor playground.
Rick
KREKLEWICH The needs assessment was presented to council and in June of 2009, Councillor Carol Simpson assisted in the formation of the Blackfalds Fieldhouse Society to fundraise for the project. The Society approached the Town of Blackfalds for support and soon after RC Strategies was contracted again to develop a business plan for the facility. Architecture ATB provided the design and Manshield Construction was hired to build the facility and now, we are on the cusp of experiencing all the opportunities the Abbey Centre will have to offer. Everyone will be rewarded from the extensive amount of planning and fundraising put forth for this project. Thus far, the facility has received a tremendous amount of financial support for the project. When the Blackfalds Fieldhouse Society first met, they created a goal of raising $750,000 toward the project.
They have since almost doubled their expectations, raising close to $1.5 million. A significant portion of that funding came through the overall naming rights of the facility with Abbey Master Builder being the overall facility sponsor. A sponsorship package was created for all of the amenities within the Abbey Centre as well. McKay Ranch sponsored the outdoor aquatic centre that will be a popular summertime attraction for the facility. Border Paving Ltd. sponsored the fitness centre which will have spectacular views and full of natural light. One of the most featured attractions for all ages, the indoor running track was sponsored by Cottonwood Meadows. The indoor playground area which will be full of children and families was sponsored by the Kinsmen Club of Red Deer. Pebble Pushes Gravel Co. sponsored the outdoor playground, Servus Credit Union sponsored the multipurpose program room and the Blackfalds Agricultural Society sponsored the outdoor amphitheatre. The strong community support and the hard work of the dedicated members of the Black-
falds Fieldhouse Society is a true testament to how a community can achieve success when working together. Although the Abbey Centre is 80% complete and on schedule, there is still a lot of work remaining. The completion of the indoor amenities, purchasing of equipment, hiring of staff and all the wonderful things that come with opening a new facility are in the works. Plans are already underway to set up some new and exciting programs so everyone can utilize this incredible facility to its fullest. Programs will consist of drop-in sports, clinics, summer camps, yoga, fitness programs, spin classes, art classes and much more. The opportunities are endless. There will also be a lot of pool fitness programs and swimming lessons being offered as well in the summer months. Parents will also be able to take advantage of the child-minding services being provided at the facility so they can workout or attend an evening program. So stay tuned and get ready for the opening of this fabulous facility in 2014. Rick Kreklewich is the general manager of the Abbey Centre.

Foundation offers youngsters chance to ride BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express When Christina Ming and Roy Sturgeon began offering riding lessons at the Flying Cross Ranch just north of Lacombe in May, they were disappointed that not everyone who wanted to could afford take advantage of their riding program. Ming said they wanted to offer riding lessons to those who perhaps needed a little financial aid. In order to make that happen, Ming and Sturgeon created the Bud Mathes Youth Equine Foundation. That program, which was officially launched on Sept. 13, already has six students in it. So far, Sturgeon and Ming have been funding the program themselves, but are now looking for more people to help fund the Foundation so that they can help even more people. “We can do so much just on our own but we can do so much more with everyone else’s help,” said Ming. Sturgeon said he named the Foundation after his friend, Bud Mathes, who took him to races as a child and helped him develop his love of horses. “Truthfully he was my best friend for his entire life,” said Sturgeon. “He was very important to me my whole life.” Sturgeon added that he and Mathes’ daughter were also close friends growing up and would show horses together as children. Ming said her desire to help children who are less fortunate when it comes to finances stems from her own experience as a child. “For me, it’s because I
HORSING AROUND – Emily Farnel rides at the recent Flying Cross Ranch open house and fundraiser. was that kid,” said Ming. “I was that kid on the receiving end of that.” Sturgeon added that for his own part, the Bud Mathes Foundation and its subsequent programs for children are his way of giving back from his successful career relating to horses. “I’ve always done well in the horse business for the most part, it’s been good to me” said Sturgeon. “I’ve
been fortunate to be able to do what I can do and I like to give back. I just think it’s important to live.” Ming said that she has seen the joy that her daughters and Sturgeon get out of riding horses and wants to share that kind of experience, or at the least the opportunity to have it, with all children. “I just think that every kid should have the opportunity to be around horses
and ride and just have that experience,” said Ming. Sturgeon added that horses and riding are great pastimes where no programs exist to get children involved in the sport. However, there are many programs in existence to help kids play hockey or other more popular sports. While they are great sports, Sturgeon said they aren’t for everybody. “Not every kid wants to play hockey or ringette
and there are no programs available for kids to do something like this.” Ming added that there are programs for sick children to ride, or other therapeutic riding programs in existence, but none for children who simply have a financial barrier preventing them from riding. She said that is something she wanted to change as there are a lot of costs associate with horseback riding.
Brian Vossen/Lacombe Express
“Riding is an expensive hobby.” As part of the official launch even held on Sept. 13, the Bud Mathes Youth Equine Foundation also hosted a fundraiser through a live and silent auction, raffles and 50/50 draw. For more information on the Bud Mathes Youth Equine Foundation, visit flyincrossranch.com.

Sensei Clint Robison passes on martial arts experience BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express At the recent Active Living Fair held in Lacombe on Sept. 11, attendees were treated to a demonstration by local martial artists from Lacombe Karate and Kickboxing. Students and instructors from the school showcased their skills demonstrating their abilities in kata, sparring, self-defense and board and brick-breaking. Sensei Clint Robison, head instructor at Lacombe Karate and Kickboxing, said karate is a fun, interesting way for people to get some exercise while learning something new. “It gives people something to do,” said Robison. “That’s what we offer. A way to better yourself.” A fan of Bruce Lee, Robison started taking karate lessons after watching Lee’s movies sparked his interest in martial arts. Robison said he saw an ad in the paper, signed up for classes and has never looked back. Many people get involved with martial arts for reasons similar to Robison’s, but not everyone realizes the amount of effort and dedication it takes to develop the skills. Robison said it takes years to develop substantial skills in martial arts. He added it took him seven years to earn his black belt in karate. “It takes a lot of hard work and discipline,” said Robison. “You have to train hard for many years.” For children just starting in karate, Robison said they can develop good skills, enough to defend themselves against an average person with no combat training, in two to three years. He added that, on average, students in his system earn their black belts within five to seven years. During the years of hard work that it took to get to where he is, Robison stayed hooked on karate. He said the competitive aspect of karate was something that kept him interested in the sport when he was younger and training for his black belt. Competition is an important aspect of karate for Robison, he said. Not only did it keep him interested in training for many years, Robison said he believes competing helps his students grow as karate practitioners. “You really get experience by putting yourself out there, you test your skills

against other clubs,” said Robison. He added that the goal of competition is not necessarily to win every match, but to learn from competing against other practitioners. Robison said that his students are strongly encouraged to compete in as many tournaments as possible. He said that this helps students immensely when they apply to test for their black belt and he tries to have his students compete in at least 10 tournaments by the time they test for black belt. Today, it is teaching that keeps Robison involved in karate. He said he enjoys being able to impart his experience on to his students and see them improve and grow in their skills. As
such, it is fitting that Robison’s students address with the title, ‘sensei’ which is a Japanese word for ‘teacher’ and a title used to refer to all black belts at Lacombe Karate and Kickboxing. While Robison has his black belt in karate, he has by no means reached the end of the road in his karate training. He said there are five degrees of black belt in his system and it is possible that the head of Zen Karate, Dwight Scheer, who is based out of Saskatoon, could contact him in the near future to test for his third degree black belt. Robison trained under and earned his black belt from Sensei Lyle Cheney at Cheney’s Zen Karate and Kickboxing in Red Deer.
Today, Lacombe Karate and Kickboxing is still a sister school of Cheney’s school in Red Deer. Karate is not the only martial art offered at Lacombe Karate and Kickboxing. As the name suggests, Robison also offers lessons in kickboxing. He said he first tried kickboxing while he was a brown belt in karate. After training in kickboxing for a year, Robison had his first fight, which he won, in Prince Albert. “I liked that too, I liked the full contact,” said Robison. He added that his experience in karate was a great benefit in kickboxing, as he had experience with more dynamic kicks other kickboxers weren’t used to seeing. news@lacombeexpress.com

Lacombe Raiders see season success so far Halfway through their football season, Lacombe’s Bantam Raiders are doing quite well. Already boasting a lossless season thus far, the Raiders added another game to the win column after steamrolling the Hunting Hills High School Lightning 46 – 0 at MEGlobal Field last weekend. Mike Wood, head coach for the Raiders, said that all of the games thus far have been won with fairly large margins and he attributes

the Raiders’ success to its experienced roster. “We have a very strong team, said Wood. “They are very hungry and want to win. Saturday’s game began well for the Raiders, who wasted no time establishing a substantial lead over their opponents from Red Deer. Lacombe’s Raiders then continued that lead throughout the entire game, not once letting the Lightning score. Even with the insurance policy of such a sizeable lead, the Raiders never let off. Even the few slip-ups

the team made didn’t set them back at all as Hunting Hills High School failed to capitalize on Lacombe’s mistakes.
“WE HAVE A VERY STRONG TEAM. THEY ARE VERY HUNGRY AND WANT TO WIN.â€? MIKE WOOD Wood said that the team has 18 returning players and the team’s rookies are also showing a lot of promise. He added that the talent and leadership of the Raiders’ core players, quarterback David Muellar, who Wood said is “Probably the best, quarterback in the leagueâ€?, linebacker James Wood and running back Ben AriďŹ n contributes greatly to the Raiders success. Coaches can also take some credit for the incredible season the Raiders have been having, said Wood. He added the full coaching staff of the Raiders know that they are another strength that supports the already talented team. There are still three more games in the Raiders’ regular season. Wood said the real test for the Raiders will be when they face-off against Stettler during Football Day in Lacombe on Sept. 28. Like the Raiders, Stettler also has a strong roster and has been

While the Raiders have a strong roster and a strong team, there are a few things, like tackling on defense and timing on offense, said Wood. However, Wood said he is comfortable the Raiders are in good shape for the rest of the season.

“The rest will come. Wood went on to say that the Raiders coaching philosophy is to develop the players so that they are better in the next season, regardless of whether they will be returning as Raiders or moving onto other teams. “Having that philosophy, we’ve grown into a team that wins quite consistently, said Wood. He added basics and fundamentals are key for this coaching formula and therefore are also the key to why the
Raiders are such a strong team. Every year, the Raiders set a goal to win a provincial title, said Wood. He said that, were the post-season to begin immediately, he would expect the Raiders to perform well. “I’m extremely conďŹ dent in our team for sure.â€? Next game for the Lacombe Bantam Raiders is at 11 a.m. on Sept. 21 at MEGlobal Field. Come out and see the Raiders take on Ponoka. news@lacombeexpress.com
