Buy a cookie and help the hospital Submitted
The delivery may be a week later than anticipated but on September 23 the arrival of yummy chocolate chip cookies to start the 2013 Tim Hortons Smile Face Cookie Campaign is something the board members of East Kootenay Founda-
tion for Health are anxious for. This year its Executive Director, Donna Grainger put out a challenge to the EKFH Board to purchase a case (144 cookies) of either frozen or baked cookies and in turn to donate their case to other worthy charities or causes in the com-
munity. The EKFH Board, combined with some help from a couple of other supporters, did not disappoint as preorders of 12 cases plus a few loose ones (1,753 cookies in total) are being personally delivered during Cookie Week to these deserving groups:

TESTED. DURABLE. EFFICIENT. NOW UP TO $1,000 IN REBATES*
by Trent Brereton, ND
The End of the Golden Age of Antibiotics
In 1942 Penicillin first became available for mass distribution and it changed the face of medicine. For decades now, we have come to rely on antibiotics to treat all forms of infections. As with all things good, we tend to overdo it and antibiotics are no exception. For years antibiotics have been given when they are not needed; for viral infections, “just to be safe”, to satisfy worried parents, and for conditions that they have been proven ineffective. As a result, golden age of antibiotics is about to end. Earlier this week the CDC sounded urgent alarm bells by stating that unless concerted action is taken “the medicine chest will be empty” when it comes to treating many infections. As antibiotic resistant bugs become more common, everyone will have their “favorite” bug. For some patients, that battle is already lost and they are living in a post antibiotic world. At the top of the list is Clostridium
difficile (C. diff.), a bacterium that causes digestive troubles and diarrhea. Just last week I treated an elderly woman with antibiotic resistant C. diff who was having uncontrollable diarrhea. This scenario is going to become increasingly common. With fewer antibiotics to choose from we are going to have to get back to basics and treat the underlying cause of disease. Bacterial infections thrive when the “environment” is welcoming and the immune system stressed. Many common infections are either preventable or treatable using holistic methods that help support immunity and address the underlying imbalance in the body. At the top of this list is diet and lifestyle. Reducing sugars and eating more fruits and vegetables goes a long way toward improving the health of your body’s environment. In the coming weeks I will go into more detail on how to be healthy in a post antibiotic world.

Thanks to the city staff by Denise Pallesen
It has been a year since I last wrote a council update for the newspaper. And what a year it has been! So many projects have been completed over the past year by our city staff. I would like to thank them all for their vision and continued hard work on behalf of all Cranbrook citizens. Without their dedication our city would not be as successful and look as beautiful as it does! With the dedication of our Engineering and Planning departments many bylaws including the Sign and Building bylaws have been updated. Thanks to the many businesses and citizens who provided input and ideas to ensure that these bylaws will continue to be relevant to Cranbrook’s future. I commend our Public Works department for going the extra mile during all seasons. Under their watchful eye, we enjoy good clean drinking water, maintenance of our facilities and keeping the Highway 3 corridor and other city areas looking beautiful. They look after our roads - plowing, salting and ‘pothole patrol’ so we as citizens can get where we need to go. This department does so much behind
the scenes to keep our city running smoothly. The Leisure Services department continues to successfully operate our parks and arenas, most notably Western Financial Place which is home to the Kootenay Ice. Many thanks to the staff at Leisure Services for many well attended events and programs while making it a friendly, well used facility. One of the departments that we seldom think of as a “city” department is our airport. There have been many improvements over the past few years to the Canadian Rockies International Airport, with a facelift, runway expansion and a significant increase in passengers. Thanks so much to the staff of the Canadian Rockies International Airport for continuing to move the airport forward! Thanks to the Cranbrook Public Library for continuing to provide an excellent home to thousands of books and programs for our citizens! The library continues to grow its membership and in the past year made the decision to stay open seven days a week for our reading pleasure. Thank you to our emergency services men and women from Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services
and the RCMP for putting their lives on the line for our safety. These employees are constantly upgrading their skills and knowledge to keep us, our friends and family safe. They also spend many extra hours supporting non-profit organizations that help to make Cranbrook a better place to live. And finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the City Hall staff - what a wonderful group! These folks are constantly working to improve our city and addressing the concerns of all citizens. Some work at the front counter, some work through our Finance & Computer Services department to keep our budget balanced, while others provide support through Corporate Services and Bylaw Services. The City Hall staff work to move Cranbrook forward whether from Economic Development and Planning to Communicating with our citizens. Thanks so much to all the hardworking, dedicated staff of the City of Cranbrook! Councillor Denise Pallesen Opinions expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the position of the City of Cranbrook.
On September 27 and 28, Knox Volunteers will host a festival gift sale featuring handcrafted home decor and gifts made by fairly paid artisans from more than 30 countries. Each year, Knox volunteers partner with Ten Thousand Villag-
es, the oldest and largest fair trade retailer in North America. This non-profit organization creates an international marketplace where the well-being of artisans in developing countries is just as important as that of their North American counterparts.
The Fair Trade Gift Sale will be held on September 27 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and September 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church Hall, 2100 3rd Street South.

Spooky magic show for the EKBIA Submitted The East Kootenay Brain Injury Association (EKBIA) will be hosting STAGe FRiGHT, “The THRILLusion Show” as a preHalloween fundraiser on Sunday, September 29, at 4 p.m. The show will be held at the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook. Billed as 90 minutes of spine-tingling Halloween magic and mystery for the whole family, STAGE FRiGHT promises to be like nothing you’ve ever seen before! A haunted stage show with nerve-shattering illusions guaranteed to give you goosebumps. The show is the brain-child of master illusionist John Kaplan, who stars in the production along with a cast of dancers and an assortment of “spooky” special guests! Reviewers have described the show as “a chilling

array of nightmarish illusions that will leave you with many haunting memories” (The Peak, SFU) and “a little like David Copperfield possessed by Beetlejuice” (Capilano Courier). John Kaplan has been touring Canada for nearly twenty years, and his family magic shows have earned hundreds of thousands of dollars for school and community groups all across the country. This year’s production on behalf of the EKBIA hopes to raise money towards supporting its programs in the region for people and their families that are affected by brain injury. Last year, STAGe FRiGHT was sold-out throughout the lower mainland, attracting crowds of up to 1,000 per performance. Tickets may be purchased in advance and family passes are available.

Your donations make a difference for the Reach-A-Reader campaign On October 10, buy your local newspaper from a volunteer on the street. Your donation goes directly to a literacy program in your community. Join the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy and Black Press to promote, celebrate and support literacy initiatives in your community. The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) is the Columbia Basin and Boundary region not-for-profit literacy organization. Our vision is that local communities across the Columbia Basin and Boundary region will be healthy, inclusive, and committed to literacy and learning as lifelong and lifewide activities. CBAL works closely with libraries, schools, colleges and other community partners in your community to offer a variety of paths to learning. Schools and colleges provide formal learning opportunities that follow a curriculum and result in
formal recognition of learning by awarding diplomas or degrees. Both CBAL community based programming and college continuing education courses provide opportunities to learn in non-formal ways. That is, although there are recognized learning outcomes, the learning process is generally more relaxed and does not result in a diploma or degree. A silversmithing course at the local college or a senior’s computer program offered by CBAL are both examples of non-formal learning. CBAL’s informal learning programs provide experiential learning opportunities and are designed to be responsive to the needs of those who participate. They do not result in formal credits and are led by someone who is acting as a facilitator of learning. These kinds of programs include Autobiographical Writing, Making Connections: Learning and Reading Partners, ESL conversation groups,
and various parent and child early learning programs. CBAL’s staff recognize the uniqueness of each community we serve and offer nonformal and informal literacy and learning programs to meet specific, local needs. The staff helps adults develop the functional skills in reading, writing, numeracy, English language, essential workplace skills and computer skills they need to be successful lifelong learners. We also help families with resources and information about how to support the learning development of their children beginning at birth. Improved skills increase confidence and participation in the economic, political and cultural life of the community. You can make a difference in your local community. Mathias that I started to watch closely. Mathias started to show signs of drinking a glass of water or juice really fast and keep going for more. He would also be going to the washroom more often. At that point I knew something was wrong. We went to our doctor, to find out what was wrong at that point we felt like a rock just landed on us. We didn`t know what to do, we start to blame our selves of what we feed him, but the doctor said there is nothing we did wrong as we eat healthy in our family and there is nothing that we could be done to prevent him from getting it. After we were told we were sent to Cranbrook Hospital were we met a team that hook an IV on to him to flush out the ketones. After his levels were stable, we were then on our way to Childrens Hos-
pital were we got more care and did a crash course on how to deal with and live with T1D. We have other children too, that too had to learn about their brothers condition. When we were sent home after learning about T1D, it was a little hard at first as, I couldn`t just give him a big amount of something to eat. I had to start calculating how many carbs he could have with the amount of insulin I was giving him, so that his sugars weren`t going to low or too high. I also measure and weigh his food. It was also hard to say no to Mathias when he was invited to birthday parties or a friends, as I always need to know what he was eating. I was a little scared when I sent Mathias back to school after this, as I would always be close

We always have to make sure to, we have enough diabetic supplies on hand at all times. Strips for his meter, are the first thing we run out of fast as, he is always checking his BG. Two years later, Mathias is now on an insulin pump, which is so much easier for him. He isn`t limited to what he eats as much. He can have a normal life as the pump does all the calculating for him for what he wants to eat, he still has to tell the pump how many carbs, he is having, but he doesn`t have to give himself a needle all the time. It gives him more freedom and to be a kid again and go to a

Mathias is always a happy kid, he doesn`t let T1D slow him down. Mathias looks forward to the day when T1D is cured and until then hopes technology brings simpler solutions to managing his care.

Grand Caravan - plenty of room without sacrificing power Overall: With five models to choose from and an on-theroad starting price of $21,500, Dodge makes a strong case for top minivan honours. Drivetrain: Solid 3.6-litre V6 with sixspeed automatic transmission posts respectable city and highway fuel-economy numbers. The minivan cat-
egory’s high-selling glory days are well behind it, but demand for these rigs as a logical choice for families and as grandkid haulers for empty nesters remains strong. That’s especially true for Chrysler-built Town & Country and Grand Caravan units as well as key competitors Honda Odyssey and Toyota Si-
enna. However if price is the object, combined with plenty of space and decent performance, the Grand Caravan has to be considered a top pick. Since its 2011 model-year updating, the GC now drives more securely and frugally with a revised suspension topped with low-rolling-resistance tires to help prop up
fuel economy. At the same time, the interior was upgraded with new gauges and soft-touch dashboard and doorpanel surfaces replacing hard plastic. The 3.6-litre “Pentastar” V6 that was introduced at the same time produces 283 horsepower and, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, easily runs with the minivan

Overall: The mid-size 200 remains in a holding pattern for 2013 while it awaits a complete makeover, and possibly even a new name. Drivetrain: A 2.4-litre four-cylinder mated to a four-speed automatic is the choice of frugal shoppers; a sixspeed automatic is optional with the 2.4, but standard with the 3.6-litre V6. The 200 remains in the shadow of the Cam-
ry, Accord, Altima plus the remainder of the big shooters of the mid-size sedan category. But that hasn’t stopped Chrysler from making it as appealing as possible while work continues behind closed doors on its 2014 Alfa Romeobased replacement. The car’s knot of attributes includes a starting price just over $20,000 —-which is much less than the competitors — a wide assortment of standard equipment and
decent enough comfort level. Where it loses steam is in fuel economy, which is nowhere near that of its peers. Underneath, the suspension offers reasonable ride quality and outside noise abatement (acoustic laminated front and side glass is part of the package). Inside, you’ll find an attractive instrument panel and supportive seats. There see 200 page 16

are also plenty of what Chrysler calls “softtouch” features, such as the armrests. While the base powerplant is a 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder, buyers can select the 283-horsepower “Pentastar” 3.6-litre V6. The four-cylinder is coupled to the price-leader model’s four-speed automatic transmission, or you can specify a six-speed automatic that helps improve overall mileage. The 200 has to cover a broad spectrum of buyers and is therefore available in LX, Touring, Limited and 200 S trim levels.

Overall: The only way to get seating for up to seven people in the Kia line also has an available V6 and off-road capability. Drivetrain: Two fourcylinder engines and an available V6; all-wheeldrive is an option. The Sorento remains a stylish, comfortable machine that takes its highway-cruising role seriously, regardless of weather or road status. The 2013 edition, available in front- or all-wheel-drive, also offers a split-folding third-row-seating option for folks needing to transport up to seven passengers. Buyers can choose between a base 175-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 191-horsepower directfuel-injection version of the 2.4 and a 276-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. All three are closely matched in terms of fuel performance, although the direct-injection fourcylinder does hit 9.5 l/100 km on highway. A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission available, while all-wheel-drive is available with any engine. Standard LX features — four-cylinder and

The Ford Taurus combines speed, handling and safety in one package. Overall: It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman! Or at least his logo used in Taurus’s new front grille. Drivetrain: Regular Taurii use revised 288-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 engine that drives the front or all four wheels; the “raging bull” SHO adds twin turbochargers and other performance upgrades to the V6 for a 365-horsepower hit; all-new fuelsaving 240-horsepower 2.0-litre “EcoBoost” turbocharged four-cylinder front-drive only; six-speed automatics all
around. With the gorgeous Fusion painting the future for Ford’s sedan designs, it’s easy to understand why the fullsize Taurus needed a little sprucing up. The result includes angrier headlights, a Supermanshaped front grille, wider fenders, and rear LED taillamps that all work to create a sharper shape. The interior gets the futuristic treatment too, integrating a bunch of new display screens that give access to the MyFord Touch and SYNC system, while
secondary controls are found on the dash and steering wheel. Under the skin, most 2013 Taurus models are motivated by the upgraded 288-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 found in a host of Ford products, along with a standard sixspeed automatic transmission and optional all-wheel-drive. Those looking to save a little fuel can opt for the more efficient 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 240 horsepower, although it only comes in front-wheel-drive. The smaller choice does

Save money: now is the time to make your home more energy efficient, before winter keeps you inside. You’ll save lots of money, especially where heating and electricity costs are concerned.

Celebrate our forest workers Submitted Wood is an incontestable part of our lives. From the pencils we use to write with to the kitchen chairs, wood is found everywhere in a typical Canadian home. Most of us like it well enough, yet few take the time to consider where it actually comes from and how it’s produced in Canada. That’s why National Forest Week takes place, from September 22 through to the 28. First off, let’s imagine a home without any wood, replacing the areas we’d usually use it with man-made alternatives such as: Linoleum or tile flooring, cement walls, metal furniture, plastic cupboards, doors and buffets, gas fireplace with a metal apron... even the beds would have to have metal frames instead of wooden ones. Consider the compromises both aesthetically and to your overall comfort. Life just wouldn’t be the same without it. The wood industry in Canada is responsible for creating all of the above and more: It saws logs into lumber, preserves the wood that’s been cut, makes veneers, plywood, panels or assembled materials. At the heart of the forest industry, the see Celebrate page 24

Canadian wood industry also contributes to Canada’s economy on a large scale: There are almost 1,000 sawmills in Canada employing well over 80,000 workers. Many rural communities depend on the forestry industry. Also, processing wood products is the economic base for hundreds of municipalities. Forests provide a lot more than trees.
September 22 through to the 28. Although fire is no longer the greatest threat to this valuable resource, these important ecosystems are nevertheless in danger. This week offers Canadians the opportunity to consider the future of our forests, the most important of which is the boreal. The boreal forest spans the northern parts of North America and Eurasia; about a third is in Canada. Many of the animals we consider typically Canadian such as moose, caribou and loons come from this region. The area contains more than 1.5 million lakes and several of Canada’s main rivers. Nearly half of the birds in North America go to the boreal to breed and summer there. The forest is a hub of activity, providing homelands to a vast number of species as well as fresh water, oxygen and ecological balance to the rest of the planet. Despite its apparent vastness and density, certain boreal wildlife have witnessed a decline in numbers, raising some concern. Woodland caribou, for example, are currently threatened by hunting, agriculture, forestry activities, pipelines and oil and gas production. Action is being taken to reduce the human effect on the boreal forest by government agencies and environmental organizations. An ecosystem vital to our planet’s survival, the boreal deserves as much protection as possible.
