Kelli Smith has a huge range of skills and interests, so it’s no surprise that her new retail store is called Full of Wonder. The 12th Avenue North shop is filled with an eclectic selection of items chosen because they can warm a heart and brighten a day. “I’ve always been a local shopper, so it’s great to have a little shop that fills a space in our retail market,” she said. “I’m working to fill it with products that others will like as much as I do, things that other stores don’t carry — I want to build networks, not compete with others.” A blend of local and international products, Full of Wonders carries the works of seven local artisans. “Goods from other countries are handmade or locally made in the communities they come from,” she said. “They aren’t produced by big corporations.” Smith has plenty of experience in retail and customer service, but had no real plans to open her own store. “I never really had the idea before and then suddenly I was doing it before I knew it. It took on a life of its own!”

Just over $107,000 is available to fund projects that make a positive difference for Columbia Basin youth aged 12-29 in the upcoming Youth Grants Program (YGP) intake. Organizations, school districts, First Nations organizations and local governments — plus youth aged 15-29 with a sponsoring organization — can apply for up to $15,000 per project. “CBT strives to take an active role in helping communities create opportunities for young people in the basin,” said CBT sector initiatives senior manager Aimee Ambrosone. “Projects that receive youth grants funding benefit basin youth in diverse ways.” CBT’s Youth Advisory Committee, made up of youth aged 15-29 from around the basin, adjudicates the YGP applications. The upcoming YGP deadline is Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. Program adjudicators are especially interested in projects that support youth engagement, leadership or employment and entrepreneurship. Author adds humorous twist to romance genre BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Susan Lohrer’s romance writing career is fairly new, with two novels — Rocky Road and Over the Edge — published in paperback and as ebooks this year, and as with many artists, her profession grew directly out of a lifelong passion. “I’ve always been a reader,” said the Creston Valley author. “I read from the copyright page right through to the very end.” She’s also a big fan of the romance genre, with characters created by Katie Fforde, Sophie Kinsella and Helen Fielding lending inspiration. “I don’t know if I write like they do, but I’m inspired by their funny heroines who do outrageous things,” she said. “My dog is actually named Bridget Jones.” Lohrer’s novels are deeper than many expect from the genre, with family issues and relationships central to the plot. “It’s more than just boy meets girl,” she said. “It’s a bigger story than just romance.” Her first book, Rocky Road, which was published in June, deals with Nancy Anne “Ancy” Robertson, who has her heart set on a dream promotion — but she could lose her job altogether if her careerannihilating secret comes out: her fiancé is also her physical therapy patient. “She needs to get him off her patient list, but he sets off a series of one credulity-challenging disaster after the next, and she’s the only one on staff who’s qualified to treat his injuries,” says the publisher’s description. “Maybe some people would walk away, but he volunteers Creating a HUB

building houses for people who can’t afford them, and that fact melts Ancy’s heart.” Over the Edge, published in late July, focuses on Kat Cherish, a high school principal and activist — “a combination that hasn’t been great for her career” — who returns to her hometown to discover her estranged sister is going through tough times — and that their childhood home is for sale.

Susan Lohrer “Getting the house back just might be the only thing that can put Kat’s complicated family back together,” says the description, “if she can cope with her mixed feelings for her ex-boyfriend, who’s been hired to completely remodel her house for another potential buyer … and if she doesn’t lose her new job because of the outrageous antics she’s pulling to keep her sister out of trouble.” Obviously, there’s also a healthy dose of humour thrown in for good measure, turning the stories into from straight romance into romantic comedies.

“I blame it on too many years of watching The Simpsons,” she said. “I can’t get rid of slapstick.” Readers expecting graphic descriptions of other physical activity, though, will find those conspicuously absent. “The shenanigans happen behind closed doors,” Lohrer said. Lohrer got started in writing in 2004, when she received a card in the mail for a writing course. At the time, she was already in a group for parents of children with Down syndrome, and became the resource person for writers in the group. The course led to Lohrer becoming an editor, which made sense, since she used to “rip apart books” — and when friends would send her letters, she’d make corrections in red and return them. She had her books written before she mentioned them to her current publisher, from whom she was editing. In an unrelated email, Lohrer decided to include the line, “By the way, I’ve got these two novels I wrote.” Her publisher was immediately intrigued. The author has lived all over Western Canada and moved to Creston when she was 12. She later went to the Okanagan for a few years before returning to the Creston Valley. Her deep roots in the region with one book set in a fictional Idaho town, and another in a fictional Kootenay town. She said that more books are in the works, with a setting that might seem more familiar. Lohrer said she’s enjoyed the experience of writing the novels, as well as following the path the characters led her on. “They sort of become alive,” she said. “You can plot it scene by scene, but then the characters want to do something better. You write what they need.”

RCMP respond to neighbours arguing over parking BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston RCMP responded to 68 calls for service from Sept. 16-22, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. September 16 •Police were called about a dispute between Cedar Street neighbours, caused by one taking exception to how close to the property line the other one parks. •When police responded to a call about a semi parked in a driving lane on Highway 3, the driver moved it upon request. •A car seat/stroller was found near the Kuskanook boat ramp. •A well-being check on a teenage girl on Meadow Creek Road indicated she is fine. •The extent of thefts has not been determined after a break and enter at a Peterman Road residence. •A black vehicle from Alberta was reported to have passed another vehicle dangerously on Pine Street. •A cashbox containing receipts, possibly from a garage sale, was found on Selkirk Drive. •Police were called about a dispute on Seventh Avenue South

Among her favourites is the Lampe Berger Paris line of products. Invented in 1898, these catalytic diffusers are functional and beautiful, purifying air and diffusing subtle fragrances. “Lampe Berger is an amazing system and I think it’s really cool to have the products available right here in Creston,” said Smith, who stocks a good variety of lamps and scents. Other favourite imports since the store opened in July are handmade lampshades from Nepal and bamboo charcoal soap, which contain no chemicals. “These soaps have been used for centuries for laundry and are wonderful for people who have skin sensitivities.” Familiar local producers like Kootenay Candles and Celtic Fire Designs will be popular with shoppers. Organic farm From page 1 “We thought it would be a few hundred families,” he said. “We never thought we would unlock such a huge explosion.” At times, though, sourcing organic food was easier said than done — organic cherries could sell for $9 a pound, only $2.50 of which went to the growers. “We thought the best way to get a secure supply and get quality was to buy a farm,” Turner said. The Okanagan was too expensive and has a saturated industry, so the couple looked somewhere a bit more familiar. Turner’s family had been visiting the valley since before the Second World War, and his grandparents owned Crescent Beach Resort on Kootenay Lake’s West Arm before retiring to the Antique Trailer Park. In the mid-1980s, his family bought a house in Boswell, and they began spending winters in Alberta, and summers and holidays in the Creston Valley. Two years ago, they bought an Erickson farm from Jack and Ernestine Malyk — and then hired their daughter, Margaret Devantier, to manage it — and immediately set about transitioning it to organic status. The corn grown there is already certified, and as of Sept. 1, 2014, the entire farm will be. Turner previously worked in the finance departments of a California bank, Oxford, BBC and Telus, and when he and his wife returned from the U.K. in 2007, they were surprised by the domination of agro-businesses in North America, which made it harder to obtain independent, non-genetically modified food. “There’s no transportation infrastructure at all,” he said. “If you want to get fruit out of Osooyos or Cawston, it has to go to Vancouver first.” Developing their own network allowed the Organic Box to access food from independent farms, which must be either organic or transitional. It also allowed for the creation of 55 jobs in B.C. and Alberta. The Organic Box started in May 2010, with new products being added as they became available — the Turners hold off on accepting a product if a better one is coming along. For example, they didn’t offer organic milk the first year, and while they could have imported it, they waited until a planned dairy opened near Edmonton.

“We’ve taken a lot of work out of sourcing food,” he said. “Anything that comes in our box you know adheres to our first principles. … A lot of families don’t know how to eat sustainably and follow principles.” The main goal is to offer local organic food to their customers — which doesn’t mean it has to be grown near Edmonton. Rather, “local” means the economic base must be local; depending on the season, food may come from as far away as Peru. “The food may be consumed in Edmonton, but it’s grown in Lethbridge or Burnaby or Creston.” In the Creston Valley, in addition to Just-A-Mere, Don Kepke and Sons Farm (garlic) and Kootenay Alpine Cheese Co. also supply the Organic Box. It’s not enough, though, that farmers supply Turner’s business

— they are also required to sell directly to their community. “If you don’t, then you’re just shipping stuff to us, and you lose touch with the people,” said Turner. In the summer, Just-A-Mere offers cherries and melons, and the fall crops of pumpkins and corn are ready. For the last decade, talk about the strength of our local economy has often stalled when mention was made about the two sawmills. Together they had a couple of hundred employees and their businesses create many, many jobs that aren’t always visible unless one gets off the beaten path. But times change and the question of their sustainability has been a concern. With nearly two centuries of operations between them, Wynndel Box and Lumber Ltd. and J.H. Huscroft Ltd. have long been closely tied to the Creston Valley, and more than just economy-wise. The Huscroft family operation started back in 1927, 14 years after Monrad Wigen started a small box factory in Wynndel. Generations of families have been raised and sustained by these two family-owned businesses. About two years ago, I interviewed Michael Combs, then the new chief executive officer at Wynndel Box and Lumber. A retired lawyer and businessman from California, Combs got involved because his wife is a director of the company. The business had invested heavily in new technology, was in debt and lumber prices had been floundering for several years when the company’s directors, all family members, asked Combs to get involved. The story he relayed to me in our first conversation turned out to be overly optimistic. He had no experience in the lumber industry and he was passing on information

he had been given by other directors and managers. Two years later, the company appears to have stabilized, but not without many changes and a moderate downsizing. Productivity is up, a hundred employees have jobs that are as

Autumn is time for apples

I have a picture of me sitting on my great-grandpa’s knee pretending to drive his orchard tractor. I’d be about three and he would be in his early eighties. As I recall, he drove up to his house and hopped off the stillrunning antique green tractor asking me, “You won’t touch anything, will you? I have to go into the house for a minute.” “Oh no, grandpa!” So off he went to the house. There were a few other family members nearby, like my dad and his mom. After I put the tractor in gear and it started towards the house, my dad fondly says he never saw his grandpa move that fast in his whole life. As for me, I always like driving tractors. I had a little orange toy tractor at home. And how long could a kid that age sit on a tractor without pushing a lever, anyway? Whenever I see a big old apple tree, especially a McIntosh, I think of my great-grandpa. I have a short row of apple trees in my orchard that I’ve planted for fun. There are all different kinds, one of this, one of that. I joke that they are in alphabetical order — because most of them are. The first two kinds I picked this year were Gravenstein. The original one came from Germany or Denmark in the late 1700s. It is a mottled red-over-green and still quite popular on the West Coast. I collected a few sprigs of grafting wood (scions)

from a really old tree from the backyard of my childhood. The other is an improved colour — beautiful red and it seems to taste much the same. They are great for eating fresh, as well as in pies, sauces or for juice.

In addition to the previously mentioned apple varieties, I also grow Royal Gala from New Zealand, Honeycrisp, developed in Minnesota (so it is exceptionally cold hardy), Cox Orange, an old British variety from roughly the 1830s (great for pies or cider), Jonagold, from New York in the 50s, and Ambrosia, which was found growing on its own (a chance seedling) in the South Okanagan in the 1980s. More recently, I planted some Aurora Golden Gala, which is a nice eating apple, and very late season, but it can be kept well in a normal cool room through to March. We also have a Fuji tree, of Japanese origin. This tree was nearly yarded out of the orchard until one year over winter I read about how they can sometime take five years to produce an edible apple. Lately, the little tree has done well. It just took a little more time than some of the others to mature. I think we have all met some people like that. Wishing you all a great harvest! Nursery Notes Evan Davies The next fruit to ripen for me are Silken. About 10 years ago, a man by the name of Dan McMurray (known for heirloom tomatoes) asked me to bring them in. They are a translucent green-yellow apple with thin skin, and crisp and juicy, with a mild taste. Like other early apples, they aren’t for keeping. Next up looks like the Summerland Mac and then perhaps Spartan. Spartan keeps pretty well, so I’ll leave it a little longer before picking. Like the other fruit that starts with an s, it has been developed or selected at the Summerland Research Station in the Okanagan. I also have an apple, Liberty, which is very similar to a Mac owing to its heritage; however, it has some scab resistance, which means the average

To the Editor: Most readers are familiar with the Obama-Kerry push for bombing Syria. What is really behind it? First and foremost, Syria is an ally of Iran and Russia. Iran was a prize coveted by Bush-Obama, though not low-hanging fruit. When you go back in history, you will be shocked that in the 1990s there was a plan to destroy seven countries in five years. Gen. Wesley Clark learned about it shortly after 9-11 and was rightly shocked. Targeted countries were Iraq, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan and Iran. We all know about the illegal, immoral invasion, occupation and destruction of Iraq based on a pack of lies. We saw what happened to Libya and Gaddafi. NATO bomb-paved the road from Benghazi to Tripoli for al-Qaida terrorists. The most prosperous African country is in shambles, and Gaddafi’s dream to sell oil for dinars instead of fake dollars or Euros is gone. So is some $150 billion of Libya’s savings. Iran proved to be a price too high to pay. Not even Bush dared to bomb or invade. Thus the road to Tehran must come through Damascus — or so warmongers thought. The Arab Spring for Syria turned into a pipe dream. The majority of Syrians supported the “bad” Assad. China and Russia did not allow a Libyan repeat in Syria. Al-Qaida terrorists, backed by Arab dictatorships and western politicos, got stuck. A new game plan was devised: Obama drew an imaginary red line in case chemical weapons were used by the Assad regime. Never mind that al-Qaida terrorists used sarin in March; a

false flag was needed. Just as UN weapons inspectors arrived at Damascus, a chemical attack happened, right on time, a few kilometres from the hotel where inspectors were staying. The problem? Day in, day out, thanks to Russia, Putin, independent media and the Internet, the false flag was exposed. Facts flew in the face of Kerry and Obama. Putin called Kerry a liar. Russia was not giving the U.S./NATO a free pass for an aggression. To make matters worse, rebels admitted to an AP reporter it was they who caused chemical weapons discharge. In addition, Turkish officials caught terrorists with sarin in Turkey. Motives, means and opportunity pointed 10 out of 10 fingers at terrorists, not Assad. Assad might be anything, but he is not stupid. Why would he give western politicos, Arab dictatorships and their handlers an excuse to bomb the hell out of Syria? He saw what happened to Iraq and Libya. So, after two and a half years of bloody war, tens of thousands of deaths and millions of displaced and refugees, there is still no regime change in Syria. Desperate warmongers are being shown what they are: ruthless, spineless mass murderers for whom nothing is sacred. One thing is for sure: Nobody believes Obama, Kerry, Biden, Cameron, Harper or Netanyahu anymore when they scream about democracy, human rights, justice, freedom or humanity. A cynical unholy trinity emerged: fake Islam (Arab dictatorships), fake Christianity (western politicos) and fake Judaism (Tel Aviv/ Zionism). They have many things in common: counting blood shekels, and the gospel of kill-steal-destroy, deception and greed, to name just a few. Fellow Advance readers, would you support Arab dictatorships in bringing their al-Qaida terrorists to Canada, murdering opponents, cannibalizing victims, executing boys and prisoners, and wiping out Christian villages? If not, call your MP and the prime minister to stop our government aiding and abetting al-Qaida terrorists in Syria and push for a true solution in Syria as Putin’s Russia does. To the Editor: (Re: In Your Corner: “B.C. Needs to Fill Gap with Poverty Reduction Plan”, Sept. 19 Advance, page 12) No government wants to see any child living in poverty and, while there is justification for calling attention to it, some important facts should be noted. In the past 10 years, B.C.’s child poverty rate has dropped by 41 per cent to one of the lowest points in three decades, which means about 69,000 children have been lifted out of poverty. We know the only real way to lift people out of poverty is to ensure they have a job and the skills they need to succeed. Our government’s BC Jobs Plan is building a foundation that is strengthening the economy, creating an atmosphere for investment and creating jobs in every region of B.C. At the same time, we’re also providing targeted supports to low-income families. For example, we’re introducing the BC Early Years Strategy to make child care more affordable and accessible for families. More than 98,000 households currently benefit from social housing; in fact this government has invested $3.6 billion to provide affordable housing around the province. We’ve also raised the minimum wage to among the highest in Canada. And, British Columbians benefit from having one of the lowest overall tax burdens in the country, with over a million low-income residents paying no income tax. This year, we are supplying school districts with more than $51 million in CommunityLINK (Learning Includes Nutrition and Knowledge) funding for breakfast and lunch programs, and an additional $11.2 million in vulnerable student supplement funding, aimed at improving academic achievement and social functioning. Black Press, CBAL teaming up for fundraiser COLUMBIA BASIN ALLIANCE FOR LITERACY

Join the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy and Black Press to promote, celebrate and support literacy initiatives in your community. The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) is the Columbia Basin and Boundary regions’ not-for-profit literacy organization. Its vision is that local communities across the Columbia Basin and Boundary will be healthy, inclusive and committed to literacy and learning as lifelong and lifewide activities. CBAL works closely with libraries, schools, colleges and other community partners in your community to offer a variety of paths to learning. Schools and colleges provide formal learning opportunities that follow a curriculum and result in formal recognition of learning by awarding diplomas or degrees. Both CBAL community based programming and college continuing education courses provide opportunities to learn in non-formal ways. That is, although there are recognized learning outcomes, the learning process is generally more relaxed and does not result in a diploma or degree. A silversmithing course at the local college and a senior’s computer program offered by CBAL are both examples of non-formal learning. CBAL’s informal learning programs provide experiential learning opportunities and are designed to be responsive to the needs of those who participate. They do not result in

formal credits and are led by someone who is acting as a facilitator of learning. These kinds of programs include autobiographical writing, Making Connections: Learning and Reading Partners, English as a second language conversation groups, and various parent and child early learning programs. learning programs to meet specific, local needs. The staff helps adults develop the functional skills in reading, writing, numeracy, English language, essential workplace skills and computer skills they need to be successful lifelong learners. It also helps families with resources and information about how to support the learning development of their children beginning at birth. Improved skills increase confidence and participation in
