access to the food we wanted to eat,” Danny Turner said. Other families in Edmonton wanted the same access, and the Organic Box has grown from 100 customers in 2010 to over 4,000.

Kelli Smith has a huge range of skills and interests, so it’s no surprise that her new retail store is called Full of Wonder. The 12th Avenue North shop is filled with an eclectic selection of items chosen because they can warm a heart and brighten a day. “I’ve always been a local shopper, so it’s great to have a little shop that fills a space in our retail market,” she said. “I’m working to fill it with products that others will like as much as I do, things that other stores don’t carry — I want to build networks, not compete with others.” A blend of local and international products, Full of Wonders carries the works of seven local artisans. “Goods from other countries are handmade or locally made in the communities they come from,” she said. “They aren’t produced by big corporations.” Smith has plenty of experience in retail and customer service, but had no real plans to open her own store. “I never really had the idea before and then suddenly I was doing it before I knew it. It took on a life of its own!”

Farm part of organic network BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The name may make it sound simple, but Just-A-Mere Organic Farm is more than just a farm. It offers organic produce, and is actually a link in a network of farms that supply the Organic Box, an

Alberta-based home delivery service that offers organic produce to Greater Edmonton residents. Danny and Miranda Turner, Edmonton residents with close ties to the Creston Valley, own both the delivery service and Just-A-Mere. “We wanted to figure out a way to get

Author adds humorous twist to romance genre BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Susan Lohrer’s romance writing career is fairly new, with two novels — Rocky Road and Over the Edge — published in paperback and as ebooks this year, and as with many artists, her profession grew directly out of a lifelong passion. “I’ve always been a reader,” said the Creston Valley author. “I read from the copyright page right through to the very end.” She’s also a big fan of the romance genre, with characters created by Katie Fforde, Sophie Kinsella and Helen Fielding lending inspiration. “I don’t know if I write like they do, but I’m inspired by their funny heroines who do outrageous things,” she said. “My dog is actually named Bridget Jones.” Lohrer’s novels are deeper than many expect from the genre, with family issues and relationships central to the plot. “It’s more than just boy meets girl,” she said. “It’s a bigger story than just romance.” Her first book, Rocky Road, which was published in June, deals with Nancy Anne “Ancy” Robertson, who has her heart set on a dream promotion — but she could lose her job altogether if her careerannihilating secret comes out: her fiancé is also her physical therapy patient. “She needs to get him off her patient list, but he sets off a series of one credulity-challenging disaster after the next, and she’s the only one on staff who’s qualified to treat his injuries,” says the publisher’s description. “Maybe some people would walk away, but he volunteers Creating a HUB

building houses for people who can’t afford them, and that fact melts Ancy’s heart.” Over the Edge, published in late July, focuses on Kat Cherish, a high school principal and activist — “a combination that hasn’t been great for her career” — who returns to her hometown to discover her estranged sister is going through tough times — and that their childhood home is for sale.

Susan Lohrer “Getting the house back just might be the only thing that can put Kat’s complicated family back together,” says the description, “if she can cope with her mixed feelings for her ex-boyfriend, who’s been hired to completely remodel her house for another potential buyer … and if she doesn’t lose her new job because of the outrageous antics she’s pulling to keep her sister out of trouble.” Obviously, there’s also a healthy dose of humour thrown in for good measure, turning the stories into from straight romance into romantic comedies.

Wagner Hills Ministries Worship Team from Langley, BC

“I blame it on too many years of watching The Simpsons,” she said. “I can’t get rid of slapstick.” Readers expecting graphic descriptions of other physical activity, though, will find those conspicuously absent. “The shenanigans happen behind closed doors,” Lohrer said. Lohrer got started in writing in 2004, when she received a card in the mail for a writing course. At the time, she was already in a group for parents of children with Down syndrome, and became the resource person for writers in the group. The course led to Lohrer becoming an editor, which made sense, since she used to “rip apart books” — and when friends would send her letters, she’d make corrections in red and return them. She had her books written before she mentioned them to her current publisher, from whom she was editing. In an unrelated email, Lohrer decided to include the line, “By the way, I’ve got these two novels I wrote.” Her publisher was immediately intrigued. The author has lived all over Western Canada and moved to Creston when she was 12. She later went to the Okanagan for a few years before returning to the Creston Valley. Her deep roots in the region with one book set in a fictional Idaho town, and another in a fictional Kootenay town. She said that more books are in the works, with a setting that might seem more familiar. Lohrer said she’s enjoyed the experience of writing the novels, as well as following the path the characters led her on. “They sort of become alive,” she said. “You can plot it scene by scene, but then the characters want to do something better. You write what they need.”

New shop From page 1 She looked for Canadian importers and wholesalers that import directly from makers. “I found some and then others started to find me as the word got out,” she said. Among her favourites is the Lampe Berger Paris line of products. Invented in 1898, these catalytic diffusers are functional and beautiful, purifying air and diffusing subtle fragrances. “Lampe Berger is an amazing system and I think it’s really cool to have the products available right here in Creston,” said Smith, who stocks a good variety of lamps and scents. Other favourite imports since the store opened in July are handmade lampshades from Nepal and bamboo charcoal soap, which contain no chemicals. “These soaps have been used for centuries for laundry and are wonderful for people who have skin sensitivities.” Familiar local producers like Kootenay Candles and Celtic Fire Designs will be popular with shoppers. Other locally made products are from Gnome Homes (whimsical objects handmade from barn wood and driftwood), Little Works Designs (tiny wooden angels cut with a scroll saw) and Joyful Pics’ Greenheart aura and scenery pictures. Organic farm From page 1 “We thought it would be a few hundred families,” he said. “We never thought we would unlock such a huge explosion.” At times, though, sourcing organic food was easier said than done — organic cherries could sell for $9 a pound, only $2.50 of which went to the growers. “We thought the best way to get a secure supply and get quality was to buy a farm,” Turner said. The Okanagan was too expensive and has a saturated industry, so the couple looked somewhere a bit more familiar. Turner’s family had been visiting the valley since before the Second World War, and his grandparents owned Crescent Beach Resort on Kootenay Lake’s West Arm before retiring to the Antique Trailer Park. In the mid-1980s, his family bought a house in Boswell, and they began spending winters in Alberta, and summers and holidays in the Creston Valley. Two years ago, they bought an Erickson farm from Jack and Ernestine Malyk — and then hired their daughter, Margaret Devantier, to manage it — and immediately set about transitioning it to organic status. The corn grown there is already certified, and as of Sept. 1, 2014, the entire farm will be. Turner previously worked in the finance departments of a California bank, Oxford, BBC and Telus, and when he and his wife returned from the U.K. in 2007, they were surprised by the domination of agro-businesses in North America, which made it harder to obtain independent, non-genetically modified food. “There’s no transportation infrastructure at all,” he said. “If you want to get fruit out of Osooyos or Cawston, it has to go to Vancouver first.” Developing their own network allowed the Organic Box to access food from independent farms, which must be either organic or transitional. It also allowed for the creation of 55 jobs in B.C. and Alberta. The Organic Box started in May 2010, with new products being added as they became available — the Turners hold off on accepting a product if a better one is coming along. For example, they didn’t offer organic milk the first year, and while they could have imported it, they waited until a planned dairy opened near Edmonton.

and I am filled with gratitude for the people who have stopped into the store to wish me well,” she said. Her location on 12th Avenue, among “business people with really good hearts,” is close enough to Canyon Street to make it easy to get to, but also

offers a sense of quiet and calm. Visitors are sure to enjoy the give and take shelf, with its continuously changing selection of items, all available by swap. “If you see something on the shelf that inspires you, take it and replace it with something that you think might inspire others,” Smith explained. “Some people have been so pleased with an item they have found that they have replaced it with four or five pieces!” Full of Wonder is located at 129 12th Ave. N. and is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Fridays and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays. “We’ve taken a lot of work out of sourcing food,” he said. “Anything that comes in our box you know adheres to our first principles. … A lot of families don’t know how to eat sustainably and follow principles.” The main goal is to offer local organic food to their customers — which doesn’t mean it has to be grown near Edmonton. Rather, “local” means the economic base must be local; depending on the season, food may come from as far away as Peru. “The food may be consumed in Edmonton, but it’s grown in Lethbridge or Burnaby or Creston.” In the Creston Valley, in addition to Just-A-Mere, Don Kepke and Sons Farm (garlic) and Kootenay Alpine Cheese Co. also supply the Organic Box. It’s not enough, though, that farmers supply Turner’s business

— they are also required to sell directly to their community. “If you don’t, then you’re just shipping stuff to us, and you lose touch with the people,” said Turner. In the summer, Just-A-Mere offers cherries and melons, and the fall crops of pumpkins and corn are ready. Apples, too, are an important crop, with Jonagold, Spartan and McIntosh grown there. “We’re starting a Jonagold revolution in Edmonton,” Turner said. “They’ve fallen out of favour with most grocery stores.” The variety is important to Turner not just because it gives him produce for his Edmonton business, but because it’s a traditional way of farming in the valley. “We want to be like farms were around here in the eighties — not monocrop farms,” he said.

For the last decade, talk about the strength of our local economy has often stalled when mention was made about the two sawmills. Together they had a couple of hundred employees and their businesses create many, many jobs that aren’t always visible unless one gets off the beaten path. But times change and the question of their sustainability has been a concern. With nearly two centuries of operations between them, Wynndel Box and Lumber Ltd. and J.H. Huscroft Ltd. have long been closely tied to the Creston Valley, and more than just economy-wise. The Huscroft family operation started back in 1927, 14 years after Monrad Wigen started a small box factory in Wynndel. Generations of families have been raised and sustained by these two family-owned businesses. About two years ago, I interviewed Michael Combs, then the new chief executive officer at Wynndel Box and Lumber. A retired lawyer and businessman from California, Combs got involved because his wife is a director of the company. The business had invested heavily in new technology, was in debt and lumber prices had been floundering for several years when the company’s directors, all family members, asked Combs to get involved. The story he relayed to me in our first conversation turned out to be overly optimistic. He had no experience in the lumber industry and he was passing on information

he had been given by other directors and managers. Two years later, the company appears to have stabilized, but not without many changes and a moderate downsizing. Productivity is up, a hundred employees have jobs that are as

directors for understanding that and giving Combs the support needed to make some tough decisions. It’s hard to measure the value of these businesses. The direct mill jobs, employment in the forest operations, contractors, businesses that provide support services — they all add up to a huge number of families and individuals who rely on them. And somehow, through countless changes to the industry and economies, both have played a steadfast role in the economic health Lorne Eckersley of the Creston Valley. This is the Life

Autumn is time for apples

I have a picture of me sitting on my great-grandpa’s knee pretending to drive his orchard tractor. I’d be about three and he would be in his early eighties. As I recall, he drove up to his house and hopped off the stillrunning antique green tractor asking me, “You won’t touch anything, will you? I have to go into the house for a minute.” “Oh no, grandpa!” So off he went to the house. There were a few other family members nearby, like my dad and his mom. After I put the tractor in gear and it started towards the house, my dad fondly says he never saw his grandpa move that fast in his whole life. As for me, I always like driving tractors. I had a little orange toy tractor at home. And how long could a kid that age sit on a tractor without pushing a lever, anyway? Whenever I see a big old apple tree, especially a McIntosh, I think of my great-grandpa. I have a short row of apple trees in my orchard that I’ve planted for fun. There are all different kinds, one of this, one of that. I joke that they are in alphabetical order — because most of them are. The first two kinds I picked this year were Gravenstein. The original one came from Germany or Denmark in the late 1700s. It is a mottled red-over-green and still quite popular on the West Coast. I collected a few sprigs of grafting wood (scions)

from a really old tree from the backyard of my childhood. The other is an improved colour — beautiful red and it seems to taste much the same. They are great for eating fresh, as well as in pies, sauces or for juice.

homeowner wouldn’t need to spray fungicides to keep them looking good. Wealthy apples, of which I only picked two this year, are early, as well. They were my grandma’s favourite apple pie apple. In addition to the previously mentioned apple varieties, I also grow Royal Gala from New Zealand, Honeycrisp, developed in Minnesota (so it is exceptionally cold hardy), Cox Orange, an old British variety from roughly the 1830s (great for pies or cider), Jonagold, from New York in the 50s, and Ambrosia, which was found growing on its own (a chance seedling) in the South Okanagan in the 1980s. More recently, I planted some Aurora Golden Gala, which is a nice eating apple, and very late season, but it can be kept well in a normal cool room through to March. We also have a Fuji tree, of Japanese origin. This tree was nearly yarded out of the orchard until one year over winter I read about how they can sometime take five years to produce an edible apple. Lately, the little tree has done well. It just took a little more time than some of the others to mature. I think we have all met some people like that. Wishing you all a great harvest! Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

Nursery Notes Evan Davies The next fruit to ripen for me are Silken. About 10 years ago, a man by the name of Dan McMurray (known for heirloom tomatoes) asked me to bring them in. They are a translucent green-yellow apple with thin skin, and crisp and juicy, with a mild taste. Like other early apples, they aren’t for keeping. Next up looks like the Summerland Mac and then perhaps Spartan. Spartan keeps pretty well, so I’ll leave it a little longer before picking. Like the other fruit that starts with an s, it has been developed or selected at the Summerland Research Station in the Okanagan. I also have an apple, Liberty, which is very similar to a Mac owing to its heritage; however, it has some scab resistance, which means the average

To the Editor: Most readers are familiar with the Obama-Kerry push for bombing Syria. What is really behind it? First and foremost, Syria is an ally of Iran and Russia. Iran was a prize coveted by Bush-Obama, though not low-hanging fruit. When you go back in history, you will be shocked that in the 1990s there was a plan to destroy seven countries in five years. Gen. Wesley Clark learned about it shortly after 9-11 and was rightly shocked. Targeted countries were Iraq, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan and Iran. We all know about the illegal, immoral invasion, occupation and destruction of Iraq based on a pack of lies. We saw what happened to Libya and Gaddafi. NATO bomb-paved the road from Benghazi to Tripoli for al-Qaida terrorists. The most prosperous African country is in shambles, and Gaddafi’s dream to sell oil for dinars instead of fake dollars or Euros is gone. So is some $150 billion of Libya’s savings. Iran proved to be a price too high to pay. Not even Bush dared to bomb or invade. Thus the road to Tehran must come through Damascus — or so warmongers thought. The Arab Spring for Syria turned into a pipe dream. The majority of Syrians supported the “bad” Assad. China and Russia did not allow a Libyan repeat in Syria. Al-Qaida terrorists, backed by Arab dictatorships and western politicos, got stuck. A new game plan was devised: Obama drew an imaginary red line in case chemical weapons were used by the Assad regime. Never mind that al-Qaida terrorists used sarin in March; a

false flag was needed. Just as UN weapons inspectors arrived at Damascus, a chemical attack happened, right on time, a few kilometres from the hotel where inspectors were staying. The problem? Day in, day out, thanks to Russia, Putin, independent media and the Internet, the false flag was exposed. Facts flew in the face of Kerry and Obama. Putin called Kerry a liar. Russia was not giving the U.S./NATO a free pass for an aggression. To make matters worse, rebels admitted to an AP reporter it was they who caused chemical weapons discharge. In addition, Turkish officials caught terrorists with sarin in Turkey. Motives, means and opportunity pointed 10 out of 10 fingers at terrorists, not Assad. Assad might be anything, but he is not stupid. Why would he give western politicos, Arab dictatorships and their handlers an excuse to bomb the hell out of Syria? He saw what happened to Iraq and Libya. So, after two and a half years of bloody war, tens of thousands of deaths and millions of displaced and refugees, there is still no regime change in Syria. Desperate warmongers are being shown what they are: ruthless, spineless mass murderers for whom nothing is sacred. One thing is for sure: Nobody believes Obama, Kerry, Biden, Cameron, Harper or Netanyahu anymore when they scream about democracy, human rights, justice, freedom or humanity. A cynical unholy trinity emerged: fake Islam (Arab dictatorships), fake Christianity (western politicos) and fake Judaism (Tel Aviv/ Zionism). They have many things in common: counting blood shekels, and the gospel of kill-steal-destroy, deception and greed, to name just a few. Fellow Advance readers, would you support Arab dictatorships in bringing their al-Qaida terrorists to Canada, murdering opponents, cannibalizing victims, executing boys and prisoners, and wiping out Christian villages? If not, call your MP and the prime minister to stop our government aiding and abetting al-Qaida terrorists in Syria and push for a true solution in Syria as Putin’s Russia does. His journey from the wilderness to the cross is a journey to which we are all invited, though we know very little of what it will cost our comfortable, status quo lives. Far from anemic platitudes, this spirituality of Jesus is robust, true to both the mess and the beauty of our lives, surprisingly in tune with our deepest longings. In Jesus, we see God PiRiTUaLiTY UiDeBooK more vividly than ever By Pastor Tom Greentree before, and we hear the voice of God speaking with a clarity that penetrates our Erickson very souls. In a world awash with puppet kings and diaCovenant bolical tyrants, we witness, Church finally, what true authority in the hands of a good king really looks like — healing that both intrigues and terrifies. Far from the sick, welcoming the outcast, loving the iconic stereotypes and popular drivel, the lonely and challenging the oppresthis Jesus is alive with passion for people sors, offering good news for all. This and disdain for religion, calling people to king is willing to suffer for his people. follow him and find out what God is This king becomes both servant and really up to in the world. sacrifice. We’ve never seen authority

uncorrupted before, so at first we aren’t sure we can trust him. Can God really be that good? we wonder. We watch. And we find ourselves intrigued by his actions, his words, his way, and crowd in close for a better look. And, sooner or later, we begin to trust that this good king really is here for us, for all, for good. And we hear his invitation to join him in his dream of setting the world to rights, starting in us and (surprisingly) working through us. To the Editor: (Re: In Your Corner: “B.C. Needs to Fill Gap with Poverty Reduction Plan”, Sept. 19 Advance, page 12) No government wants to see any child living in poverty and, while there is justification for calling attention to it, some important facts should be noted. In the past 10 years, B.C.’s child poverty rate has dropped by 41 per cent to one of the lowest points in three decades, which means about 69,000 children have been lifted out of poverty. We know the only real way to lift people out of poverty is to ensure they have a job and the skills they need to succeed. Our government’s BC Jobs Plan is building a foundation that is strengthening the economy, creating an atmosphere for investment and creating jobs in every region of B.C. At the same time, we’re also providing targeted supports to low-income families. For example, we’re introducing the BC Early Years Strategy to make child care more affordable and accessible for families. More than 98,000 households currently benefit from social housing; in fact this government has invested $3.6 billion to provide affordable housing around the province. We’ve also raised the minimum wage to among the highest in Canada. And, British Columbians benefit from having one of the lowest overall tax burdens in the country, with over a million low-income residents paying no income tax. This year, we are supplying school districts with more than $51 million in CommunityLINK (Learning Includes Nutrition and Knowledge) funding for breakfast and lunch programs, and an additional $11.2 million in vulnerable student supplement funding, aimed at improving academic achievement and social functioning. Almost $575,000 of this funding is directed to the Kootenay Lake school district. If you ever needed a guidebook for spirituality, you will do no better than the good news story of Mark. Action-packed, insightful, challenging and relentless, the Gospel of Mark captures Jesus in a way

Black Press, CBAL teaming up for fundraiser COLUMBIA BASIN ALLIANCE FOR LITERACY

On Oct. 10, when you buy the Creston Valley Advance from a volunteer on the street, your donation goes directly to a literacy program in your community. Join the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy and Black Press to promote, celebrate and support literacy initiatives in your community. The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) is the Columbia Basin and Boundary regions’ not-for-profit literacy organization. Its vision is that local communities across the Columbia Basin and Boundary will be healthy, inclusive and committed to literacy and learning as lifelong and lifewide activities. CBAL works closely with libraries, schools, colleges and other community partners in your community to offer a variety of paths to learning. Schools and colleges provide formal learning opportunities that follow a curriculum and result in formal recognition of learning by awarding diplomas or degrees. Both CBAL community based programming and college continuing education courses provide opportunities to learn in non-formal ways. That is, although there are recognized learning outcomes, the learning process is generally more relaxed and does not result in a diploma or degree. A silversmithing course at the local college and a senior’s computer program offered by CBAL are both examples of non-formal learning. CBAL’s informal learning programs provide experiential learning opportunities and are designed to be responsive to the needs of those who participate. They do not result in

These kinds of programs include autobiographical writing, Making Connections: Learning and Reading Partners, English as a second language conversation groups, and various parent and child early learning programs. The CBAL staff recognizes the uniqueness of each community they serve and offer non-formal and informal literacy and

learning programs to meet specific, local needs. The staff helps adults develop the functional skills in reading, writing, numeracy, English language, essential workplace skills and computer skills they need to be successful lifelong learners. It also helps families with resources and information about how to support the learning development of their children beginning at birth. Improved skills increase confidence and participation in

Wynndel Box and Lumber marks 100 years BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

In 1913, Europe was edging ever closer to a war that soon would become referred to, optimistically, as “the war to end all wars.” In Wynndel, Monrad Wigen was taking delivery of a small portable sawmill. In the summers, he would use it to make thin boards with which to construct wooden boxes. Wynndel was, after all, a major producer of strawberries and boxes and crates were needed to hold the fruit, which went to market by train. When demand for boxes slipped with the completion of harvest each year, Monrad moved his mill closer to the timber supply. Out in the forest, he would cut railroad ties. By the 1920s, Monrad was producing boxes for apples, pears,

peaches and apricots, and shallower crates to hold strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes and cucumbers. Each type of produce required a different size box or crate and specialized machinery was made to produce them. The business was incorporated in 1924 and has since been known as Wynndel Box and Lumber Ltd. During the Depression, the economy demanded creativity and WBL weathered the lean years by growing strawberries and asparagus. In the 1950s, with the birth rate and economy booming, WBL had grown to the point where the planer mill had its own steam power. The sawmill consisted of a circle head rig, a Linck sash gang saw (which slices logs into boards in one pass) and an edger to square up boards. The number of products grew and a second planer was added to meet

the growing demand for patterned stock. Late in his life, Jack Wigen would describe the clever structure that Monrad created to ensure the business could be sustained without creating a rift between his two sons, Jack and Bob. The company was

organized into three divisions — forest operations, the sawmill and lumber sales. When Monrad passed on, Jack and Bob each ran one division independently, but shared in the operation of the third. “Dad’s plan was to make sure we had a vested interest in

co-operating,” Jack said. “And it worked.” Each brother had sons (Michael and David) who would go on to make their careers at WBL. Sons and daughters continue to be involved as the company’s directors. Continued on page 13

Wynndel Box and Lumber on a winter day in 1960.

From page 12 In 1992 a new and larger sash gang saw (again a Linck) was installed to maintain the boards’ unique rough-sawn appearance. With the turn of a new millennium, change became the order of the day and a complete overhaul of the sawmill was undertaken. A Finnish HewSaw was imported to process smaller logs more efficiently. A double arbour circular edger was added to break down larger logs. The addition of an optimizing edger, optimizing trim line and drop sorter assembly readied the mill to compete in the 21st century. In 2008, WBL unveiled its most ambitious project. The aptly named SuperThundermac high-speed planer-moulder was imported. It runs at 1,000 feet per minute, producing the continent’s highest quality planed products. Late in 2011, WBL began a restructuring, with family members who form the board of directors naming Michael Combs as chief executive offi-

cer. Combs, whose wife sits on the board, was a happily retired lawyer and businessman in California when he accepted the challenge to create a new, sustainable business model. At stake were the jobs of 100-plus employees and the economic stability of the Creston Valley. “At the end of 2011 we decided we needed to change our business and restructure,” Combs said. “It was necessary to change our product mix — we had too many products and we were trying to be all things to all people. We focused on what we did best. We decided to downsize because wood is a limited resource.” A workforce of about 130 was gradually winnowed and a number of management changes were undertaken. “We decided we would maintain and improve our quality of customer service while downsizing within what the fibre basket (wood supply) would be. And that’s what we’ve done,” he said. “We have made major progress — our customer service had never

been better. We just did a customer survey and the results were very, very good. Our quality has never been better.” It is important to remember, Combs said, that WBL is not a commodity mill, producing mass-market lines like two-byfours. “That would be most difficult for a small mill like us to compete with, so we don’t. And we don’t make that product. We are a boutique or niche player and we make the highest quality board that you can buy anyplace. “There are only a couple of mills that do that and we are known worldwide. We have customers in Asia and, obviously, throughout the United States, so that’s what we have focused on, and the pillars of our success are quality and customer service “Of course, we’re a business and we have to be profitable in order to be viable. We have made a lot of changes in that regard and it’s been very difficult for a 100-year-old company to restructure.” Continued on page 14

Wynndel Box and Lumber as it appears today.

From page 13 Only a few years ago, rumours of the mill’s demise swirled through the Creston Valley, and employees were wondering if they had a future with the company. “I’m never going to say we’re there yet — I always say we’re getting there. Primarily the reason it has succeeded is our people, and our people have really stepped up,” Combs said. “We have pulled back the curtains and told them what we’re going to do and how we’re going to get there, that we can only do it if we’re together. “So really the journey began in 2012 and at this point we are on track. It appears that we may be at the beginning of an upward market cycle. If that happens it should allow us to take care of a lot of unfinished

business in our restructuring and make this company, hopefully, more solid than it’s been in a long time.” In an interview in 2012, Combs spoke about meeting with employees and emerging with an appreciation for WBL’s importance as an employer and economic driver in the Creston Valley. He said at that time that he and the Wigen family members were committed to putting the operation on a solid footing and maintaining the company’s presence long into the future. “I think morale is very good right now,” he said during the employees’ 100th anniversary picnic at Wynndel Hall on Sept. 7. “Our people see the results. We told them we’re not going to over-promise, that they will have to judge us by our actions. We told our people

Celebrate National Forest Week September 22 - 28 The Creston Community Forest (Creston Valley Forest Corporation) has been operating a ‘community forest’ since 1997. The concept of a community forest has existed throughout the world for years and is gaining wide popularity throughout the province of B.C. Community forests give local residents more control of forest resources adjacent to their communities. Creston is fortunate to have an ecosystem-based community forest which integrates the protection of water, views, wildlife habitat and recreation into its forest harvesting practices.

that we intend to be here today a couple of years ago, so part of our mission has been accomplished. “We have regular crew talks with our people — we bring in pizza and we talk to them and they have the opportunity to ask questions. “We are producing more with our 100 employees that we were with a higher number. Our productivity per employee has gone up significantly. That’s with no capital infusion — we did that simply by changing some things around, not constantly shutting down and changing products, just some common sense things that our managers have come up with that have made us much more efficient now. Our overhead is much less than it was.” While internal changes have contributed to putting WBL on a more solid footing, external forces have helped, too. Lumber prices have risen and demand has increased with the jump in U.S. housing starts this year. A feature built into the softwood lumber tax has also contributed. When prices rise to a certain level, the export duty is not imposed. Higher prices and no export duties give the mill a double benefit, Combs said. Productivity is also a key competitiveness factor. “In the last year we have broken a number of records, both in our sawmill and our moulder, for production,” he said. “We are very proud of our people. But it’s so much more than just production — we need high efficiency but also to make sure we don’t bring quality down. We’re sticklers on that.” Combs ended the conversation with another nod to the value of WBL employees. “Part of our philosophy is to be more transparent to our employees than we have been in the past and the other part is to engage our people. We want them to know what’s going on and we want them to be involved. We want them to know that from each log to the time that the product is shipped that each link in the chain is vitally important.”

In Creston, we depend on our forests and water supply to support the environment, the economy and to provide for recreation. The Creston Valley has a lot to offer, including great forests. So go ahead, get out there and enjoy them - in a safe and responsible manner, of course! Hiking trails in the community forest include: • Ladyslipper Trail - 7km on the Goat Mountain Road • Thompson Rim Trail - Top of Thompson Mountain Please e-mail any comments to admin@crestoncommunityforest.com Visit us online at: www.crestoncommunityforest.com Box 551, Creston, B.C., V0B 1G0 • Office: 250-402-0070 • Fax: 250-402-0080

Notes on nests and nesting

robins, the nest location can be something different than a tree branch, crotch or bark ledge, especially when there are, say, suitable man-made structures around. They will nest on building beams, ledges or other flat spots that are usually similar to their tree nesting habit in that they are eight or more feet from the ground. The main requirement for Robins appear to be “smart” building a certain style of bird birds, but at other times not so nest is to have the bird that smart. Robins, when nest conbuilds that kind of nest do the structing on a beam, somejob! There are many kinds of times forget which beam they nests and nesting places, and chose and, thus end up workeach is mainly specific to a spe- ing on several nests none of which get completed. Too many projects! Then again, choosing an unusual nest site doesn’t always end up in failure. I heard of a Ed McMackin once robin that was seen sitting on cific bird species. Often, if a a nest on a caboose that had nest builder’s habit is known, a just tailed a train into the railspecific bird can be associated way yard after travelling many with that nest and/or nesting miles across the country. Even though I know that juncos stick to the junco building code, I was struck by the similarity of nests in two different photographs taken miles apart and taken at different elevations. A bit confused, I checked my notes to see which photograph was taken where. Juncos may pick a small clump of grass or other vegetation, the shelter of an overhang at the top of a bank, or the base of a small, thick conifer for a nest site. Next summer, if you run across an agitated junco, it could be that you are near its nest, so take a look around at sites that suit junco building code, at the same time being careful not to make a trail in the vegetation that predators might follow. The two very small, round nests of soft grasses with, of course, identical eggs, looked very much alike, except the one found at 7.000 feet on Sphinx Mountain had six eggs in it while the other, found at 4,800 feet on Rolf Mountain, had five eggs. I thought, like some birds, the one at higher elevation would have less eggs because of the shorter season. But, then, juncos are seed eaters, so their food would be available late into autumn. And when snows came, they would just migrate downward. Red-winged blackbirds use coarser material that makes for a much stronger nest, which is often built off the ground or

Having few desires a step toward nourishing lives

Pema Chodron, abbess of Gampo Abbey, a Tibetan monastery located on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, has published many books about how Buddhist practice can reduce suffering and increase happiness. She sometimes jokes. “Christians have the Bible but Buddhists have lists.” Her statement is humorous, but in view of the way in which the Buddha taught, it is also true.

A

Zen's-Eye View Kuya Minogue

The Buddha never emphasized doctrine. In fact, if someone from a different sect or religion wanted to debate doctrine, he would simply reply, “This discussion doesn’t lead to understanding how to live a life that is rooted in happiness and that is free of suffering.” When asked about life after death, he would often reply that he was more interested in teaching others to realize enlightenment in this life, not in the next one. Instead of expounding doctrine, he taught from lists of attitudes and actions that result in enlightenment and deep happiness that are not dependent on beliefs, opinions, external objects or events. My next series of columns will discuss one of these lists: eight practices that lead to awakening. If one incorporates these eight practices into daily life, according to the Buddha, they will realize a life that is free of suffering and filled with joy that is not dependent on external conditions.

The first of these eight practices is to have few desires for objects and experiences that bring pleasure to the five senses. Buddha points out how great desire leads to the stress and discomfort of acquiring the material objects that are pleasurable to our senses and of attaining fame that will bring the admiration of others. If we let go of our quest for fame and gain, we can relax into truly enjoying our lives as they are. Buddha further points out that having few desires is in itself rewarding because with few desires, we don’t have to be people pleasers. We can live free of the stress of gaining the favour of others, drop all masks and roles, and enjoy who we are. If we have few desires, we are no longer prone to the many addictions that pervade our culture (alcohol, drugs, food, computer games, social networking) because we are no longer pulled by strong urges to bring pleasure to our senses. Without excessive desire, we are free to choose activities that nourish rather than entertain. People who are free of excessive desire develop a serene mind because they live without worry. Satisfied with what they have, they will not be prone to marketing campaigns designed to create a sense of longing and a feeling of lack. Instead, they can experience the bliss of contentment and cultivate a state of mind that is called nirvana. To realize nirvana is to realize heaven in this life. Suggested practice: For the next two weeks, notice how often desire for an object or experience that brings pleasure comes into your awareness. Instead of acting on it, just notice it and let it go. Bring your awareness back to enjoyment of the present moment. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Creston’s ZenWords Zen Centre. For more information, she can be reached at 250-428-6500.

over water and attached to cattails or sedge grasses. I once located a red wing nest that appeared to be two colours, well, shades, of brown. On closer inspection I discovered that the top portion of the nest was wet while the lower part was dry. It was then that I realized the builder gathers wet material, which would be easier to form for the nest, and to weave around supporting cattail stems. The use of dry materials would have produced a pretty bristly and large, haphazard nest. Waxwings do that in a small way. The nest will hardly hold the eggs. Birds follow their respective building codes, yet some species are opportunistic and versatile in how they interpret the code. Eagles may nest on cliff ledges or non-accessible rocky prominences where no trees are available. Where no trees are available, ravens are also known to nest on cliff ledges and, even where trees are available, on ledges in railroad tunnels. Great horned owls may choose large burrows in clay cliffs in which to raise their young. And, if you lived on prairie landscape, you probably learned that mallards, normally ground nesters, will nest high up in thick evergreen trees. Where else have you seen bird nests? For us humans it is best to stick to the codes! Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. He can be reached at 250-866-5747.

Celtic fusion opening concert season

CRESTON CONCERT SOCIETY Have you ever asked yourself what happens when you take an East Coast traditional music style and beat it up with a modern funk rock rhythm section? Sure you have, but now you have the answer: You get the Sept. 28 season opener for the Creston Concert Society’s 2013-2014 series, Cod Gone Wild! Based out of the Okanagan, Cod Gone Wild is a modern Celtic band. The “Cods” have melded veteran musicians from diverse musical backgrounds, such as folk, rock, jazz and funk, to create a modern Celtic sound with driving rhythms and tight vocal harmonies; this is a unique, energetically modern blend of original, traditional and contemporary Celtic, Irish and Newfoundland music that is positively infectious. The band was created when lead singer-guitarist Andrew Mercer

made the move to B.C. Born and raised on the tropical island of Newfoundland, at a very young age he began singing and playing traditional Celtic, Irish and Newfoundland music. Mercer brought a passion for traditional Irish/Newfoundland music and a vision to create something unique in B.C. and Canada, while promoting the culture, heritage and music that he has grown up listening to and performing since he was five. He decided to make the nearly 7,500-kilometre trek across the country to beautiful B.C. on Canada Day 2009 and began his quest to look for musicians almost immediately upon arrival. Bassist Roy Kawano was born and raised on an orchard in Lake Country located in the center of the Okanagan Valley. As farming was definitely not a hereditary trait, he took up the guitar at 10 years of age. Later at 14, he was given the opportunity to play bass in his junior high school and from then on, he played and recorded in various country, rock, and jazz bands throughout B.C. Performing these many different styles of music has given Kawano his current technique. Although only 26 years old, Anjuli Otter has been playing the violin/fiddle for almost two decades. Born and raised in the Okanagan, she is a classically trained violinist earning her associate diploma for violin performance from the Royal Conservatory. Otter has vast experience as a soloist, orchestra and band member, and has performed with various orchestras including the Okanagan Youth Symphony, Okanagan Symphony and Symphony Orchestra India, where she has spent the last five

years travelling, teaching, performing and creating a unique blend of eastern and western music. She has also spent many hours in the recording studio working with artists from various genres, including rock, country, jazz, bluegrass and Indo-western fusion. Chad “Rhino” Carter knew he was a drummer at the age of five when he sweet-talked his mamma into buying him The Muppets Animal Drum Kit. Further advancement took place in Saudi Arabia under the wing of a talented music teacher. Like Animal, Rhino brings intense energy and style to his performances providing rocket fuel to any musical spark. Exploration of many musical styles such as heavy alternative rock, jazz fusion, reggae and Funk have evolved this Rhino into a drummer with all the chops necessary to fill any groove. Taking this diverse

background into the Celtic genre has produced a unique sound that Celtic has never seen. In January 2011, the Cods released their first studio album. This self-titled CD has been receiving regular airplay on the East Coast on CBC, as well as Celtic radio stations around the world since its debut. After returning from touring, the band, inspired by the trip to the East Coast, started pre-production on its second CD, The Traveler. Since the release of The Traveler, the Cods have been touring and promoting the new album in western Canada with great success, recently being named the Best of the Okanagan award winners (2012) by the readers of Okanagan Life Magazine. Songs on the albums range from originals such as Sociable and Folkdance, a song

written by Rhino to pay tribute to one of his musical idols, Neil Young. They also feature several traditional tracks with new arrangements, such as the Newfoundland classic Cod Liver Oil, the Irish traditional songs Banks of the Roses and Tell Me Ma, and the Scottish version of the well known drinking song, Nancy Whiskey. The Cods have also drawn on some more recently written classics, such as Dirty Old Town and Rambles of Spring from the popular Irish duo, Makem and Clancy. This rollicking collection of talented musicians and lively tunes will have your toes tapping in no time! The Prince Charles Theatre doors open at 7 p.m. for the 7:30 show. Advance tickets are $22 for adults and $10 for students at Black Bear Books, or $25 for adults and $12 for students at the door.

Tour bringing Beethoven, Haydn to Crawford Bay LA CAFAMORE

It’s the time of year for La Cafamore’s fall tour. This time, three members of the string quartet from Nelson will be in Crawford Bay on Oct. 6 for a Sunday afternoon concert. La Cafamore has been striving to bring high quality classical music to the ears of Kootenay listeners since 2008. In the October concert, they will bring two famous piano trios to Crawford Bay classical music lovers. Haydn’s Gypsy is recognizable because of its lively last movement, which uses themes based on Hungarian Gypsy

music. This trio is from a set of 3 written during Haydn’s second visit to England in 1795 when the composer was 63, and enjoying a huge amount of popularity and success. They were dedicated to his English copyist and probable lover, Rebecca Schroeder. Beethoven’s Archduke is considered the pinnacle of the piano trio repertoire, with its expansive themes and orchestral-like instrumentation. Composed in 1811, the trio was likely performed soon after its completion, but did not reach the public’s ears until April 1814. Beethoven was the pianist in this, the last of his public

performances. Of Beethoven’s playing, Louis Spohr wrote, “In the forte passages, the poor deaf man pounded on the keys until the strings jangled and in the piano, he played so softly that whole groups of notes were omitted.” The concert — which will feature pianist Carolyn Cameron, violinist Angela Snyder and violist Alexis More — begins at 2 p.m. at the Harrison Memorial Church on Crawford Creek Road. Admission is by a minimum donation of $5. Visit La Cafamore’s Facebook page for the entire tour schedule, program notes and repertoire.

CRESTON VALLEY ADVANCE A NITA H ORTON

Despite playing shorthanded, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats earned two wins on the weekend, playing in Golden against the Rockets on Friday and hosting the Sicamous Eagles on Saturday. Key forwards Marcel Fuch and Colby Livingstone are out until Sept. 27 for, respectively, a major penalty and gross misconduct, which forced other players to step up. “It’s never easy,” said Josh Hepditch, head coach of Creston’s Kootenay International Junior Hockey League team. “Our third line played extremely well for us.” Between them, Carson Cartwright, Connor Kidd and Colton St. John earned nine points in the two games, which included the first goal of the year for St. John and Cartwright. Friday’s game was also the first win of the season for goalie Magnus Viberg. Friday’s game started with a Rockets goal 30 seconds into the first period. “After that, we kind of turned it round and played really well,” said

Hepditch. “We just focused on trying to get pucks and people to their net.” At 14:43, Cartwright scored the first Thunder Cats goal, followed by Brandon Formosa and St. John. Ethan Rusnack started the secondperiod scoring, with Trevor Hanna and Connor Kidd following before a second Golden goal. Kidd and Andrew Hodder (power play) scored for the Thunder Cats in the third period, resulting in a final score of 8-2. When the Thunder Cats hosted the Sicamous Eagles on Saturday at the John Bucyk Arena, their goal, Hepdtich said, was to get off to a better start than the night before, but they still allowed the Eagles to get the first goal. “Hopefully that’s not a trend,” he said. The Thunder Cats showed their dominance in the rest of the game, though, outshooting the Eagles 57-18. “We had puck possession for 85-90 per cent of the game,” said Hepditch. Hanna and Formosa each scored in the first period, with Hanna and Logan Styler scoring in the second.

The Eagles didn’t score in the second period, but managed the games final goal in the third, after Rusnack scored the Thunder Cats’ final goal, for a 5-2 victory. The line of Hanna, Formosa and Jesse Collins “really set the tempo for the game,” said Hepditch. “It was nice to see them step up and take it upon themselves and play strong.” The wins left the Thunder Cats with six points, tied with the Columbia Valley Rockies for second place in the Eddie Mountain Division, and behind the Kimberley Dynamiters, with nine. The Fernie Ghostriders are fourth, with three, and the Rockets have zero. The Thunder Cats have two more games at home before heading into October, which will see the team play six out of nine games on the road. They have a chance to two more home wins this weekend, when they host the Ghostriders on Friday and the Doug Birks Division’s Chase Heat on Sunday. Fernie always has a good team, so they are not one we’re going to take lightly,” Hepditch said. “They will be two more good tests for us.”

Fabulous Food Film Festival CVMTA hosting coming to Creston library annual fundraiser CRESTON AND DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY

Foodies, movie lovers, farmers and chefs, revel in this season of the earth’s abundance! To celebrate the harvest and salute our valley’s agricultural significance, the Creston and District Public Library presents its second annual Fabulous Food Film Festival, showcasing three stunning documentary films that will tantalize your taste buds and excite your mind. Each full-length feature will be preceded by a documentary short produced by Kootenay resident Emmy Willis.

7 p.m. Oct. 8: The Fruit Hunters. This film travels across culture, history and geography to show how intertwined we are with the fruits we eat. Our guides are devoted

fruit fanatics such as actor Bill Pullman, whose obsession leads him on a crusade to create a community orchard in the Hollywood Hills. This cinematic odyssey challenges not only the way we look at what we eat but how we view our relationship with the natural world. The Fruit Hunters will be preceded by the short, Wildcrafting Tea Blends, following Shannon Duncan, owner of Kimberleybased Purcell Organics, through a rocky path to learn all about wildcrafting tea blends.

7 p.m. Oct. 9: Salmon Confidential. When biologist Alexandra Morton discovers B.C.’s wild salmon are testing positive for dangerous European salmon viruses associated with salmon farming worldwide, a chain of events is set off by government to suppress the findings. The film documents Morton’s journey as she attempts to overcome government and industry roadblocks thrown in her path and works to bring critical information to the public in time to save B.C.’s wild salmon. Salmon Confidential will be preceded by the short, Taqueria El Corazon, featuring a sustain-

able taco stand in Kaslo, which is able to source local ingredients.

7 p.m. Oct. 10: Edible City: Grow the Revolution. This film is a fun, fast-paced, feature-length documentary journey through the local Good Food movement that’s taking root around the world. Inspirational, down-toearth and a little bit quirky, Edible City captures the spirit of a movement that’s making real change and doing something truly revolutionary: growing the model for a healthy, sustainable local food system that’s socially just, environmentally sound, and economically resilient. Edible City: Grow the Revolution will be preceded by the short, Sustainable Beekeeping, with the Institute for the Development of Education Arts and Leisure (IDEAL) Society in Jaffray. The film festival takes place at the Creston and District Public Library (531 16th Ave. S., use rear entrance). Admission is free. For more information, call 250-428-4141.
