The RDEK was selected as a winner of the Union of BC Municipalities Community Excellence Award for Best Practices, Civic Engagement for its Regional Snapshot. “This
summer, we experienced an unprecedented emergency event in the East Kootenay with flooding happening in several Electoral Areas and municipalities simultaneously. The impacts were felt across the region and back roads, highways, infrastructure and the Elko Dam were also affected,” explains RDEK

Flathead excluded from coal block sale Flathead Wild, a coalition of conservation groups dedicated to protecting the Flathead Valley in the East Kootenay, welcomes the federal government’s announcement that it will exempt portions of the Dominion Coal Blocks within the Flathead Valley from a planned sale of federal lands. At the same time, the groups remain con-
cerned that inappropriate development of the coal blocks adjacent to the Valley could jeopardize water quality and wildlife populations. “While details around the planned sale are not yet clear, we are encouraged that the Federal Government has confirmed that portions of the coal blocks overlapping with the Flathead
River Watershed will not be included in the sale, and that discussions with the Province are under way to ensure the protection of the entire watershed from development” said John Bergenske, Wildsight. “The Dominion Coal Block lands in the Flathead are critical for the integrity of the watershed as a whole. Although this announcement is promising, we need these areas to be legally protected under the existing ban on min-
ing and energy development,” said Peter Wood of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society. Wildsight, Sierra Club BC, CPAWS BC, and the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative are working to protect the Flathead permanently with a National Park in the southeastern onethird of the valley. The groups are also calling for a Wildlife Management Area in the rest of the Flathead and adjoining habitat.

Another successful year for city’s peace celebration Submitted The coolish temperatures did not dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd that graced Idlewild Peace Park for the United Nations International Day of Peace Celebration September 21. There were many displays for the public to look at and participate in - the project on all the Provinces and Territories of Canada that many of our schools participated in; the Anglican Youth Group displays and the White Dove of Peace that some of the International students “flew” around the celebration for the Youth Group; the Arts Council’s Peace Pinwheels; the Baha’i Children’s Group “decorated deer” and tree hangings; information on a new website “East Kootenay Humanity Network” which was to be launched on September 21; a map of the world made by the International Students where people ‘pinned their country’; and a pamphlet ‘What does Peace mean to me?’ to share your thoughts about peace - some of which were shared throughout the program. During the day there was a flurry of excitement as many volunteers and a huge contingent of 30 or more International students from the College of the Rockies International Department helped to bring and set up a tent courtesy of Bridge Interiors, set up staging for the performers, set up chairs courtesy of Frank Sandor, Sandor Rental; set up a tent for the displays;and decorate the trees in the Peace Park. There was much fun and laughter as 75 International Flags of the world (which were painted by children at

Lovely and very talented, Joelle Winkel opened the celebration leading us with ‘O Canada’. We were honored to have our dignitaries, MP David Wilks and Mayor Wayne Stetski present and welcomed their profound words which once again indicated how fortunate we are to be Canadians; our very important Color Guard from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24 in Cranbrook; and Sweeheart Youth Ambassadors, Alicia Leasak and Makenzie Yates with words of wisdom from their perspective.
Brian Coombs Editor
The entertainment began with a beautiful and soul stirring dance by Brianna Salmon, Stages School of Dance under direction of Sheri Green, to the music ‘Instrument of Peace by the Canadian Tenors - this wonderful rendition truely does set the tone in everyone’s heart to embrace love, peace and unity. Equally stunning were the dances performed by the Royal Stewart Highland Dancers under direction of Jane Nixon; the Metis Jiggers under direction of Amy Cross; and the very colorful FilipinoCanadian Association of East Kootenay Dancers under the direction of Lourdes Butalid. All of the spectacular dancers are real crowd pleasers; we are so honored to have them as part of the celebration and look forward to all of them returning next year.

Our musicians and singers did a fantastic job of engaging the crowd and graciously filling in for last minute cancellations. These very talented individuals were Joelle Winkel, Joel and buddy from Connect Church Group, John Dumas, Kenneth Trusler from Invermere, and well known star, Ed King, BC Counrty Hall of Fame. As the shivering audience silently left this moving and inspirational celebration, the sounds of “Stand Up And Say Yes” by Carla floated though the air—the words from the chorus leave a profound message to all of us: “Anyone who wants a better tomorrow, Stand up and say yes, I’ll do my part.” The committee for Cranbrook Celebra-

Hugs: to Nolan at Tim Hortons, for being the friendliest drive thru window operator EVER. He makes my day every time I go thru. Truthfully, I prefer Starbucks coffee, But Nolan makes it worth it to go to Tim’s just to hear his cheerful voice!! Hugs: To all those involved with the beautiful hanging baskets and street planters in the city. On our recent trip to the coast we found that Cranbrook’s floral displays were tops! Thank you for making our city look so beautiful. Hugs: For the colourful flower planters at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Having the flowers helps to make me feel that the hospital cares. Hugs: to the city for the new lamps along Victoria ave. But would be nice if the rocks and clumps of dirt were cleaned up. Slugs: to one of the truck dealerships in town for very bad service. I’m buying out of town! Slugs: To the 2 building supply store clerks. One refused to shake a can of paint for me and when I inquired about a product, the other said, we don’t have it. (I later found it on a shelf ). I decided to go to another store. Hugs all around: - To all the friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgeable folk at the Home Depot. They readily shook my can of paint (and 7 more). Over the summer the EKVC invested both funds and labour to rebuild the beach volleyball courts next to the track at the College. “The courts have been completed and they are an outstanding addition to the College track facility,” says Andrichuk. “This was a huge project that was spearheaded by EKVC coach Troy McFadzen and will benefit not only Avalanche and EKVC teams but College students and the Cranbrook community.”

The College of the Rockies Avalanche volleyball team and the East Kootenay Volleyball Club (EKVC) have formed a new partnership aimed at building volleyball in the East Kootenays. The new partnership will allow for the two organizations to share knowledge and infrastructure which will, in turn, provide opportunities for local athletes to have access to highlevel volleyball in their
own backyard. Manager of Campus Life and Athletics Cori Andrichuk notes, “We have had a long-standing relationship with the EKVC. Many of our former and current players help out with coaching for the club and they frequently use our facility for games. This partnership helps us to continue to grow the existing relationship for the benefit of volleyball in the region.” The collaboration is already seeing benefits.

Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.

EKVC Vice President Karen Kettenacker is pleased with the new courts. “Beach volleyball provides excellent cross training for indoor volleyball. The newly restored courts will also provide a training site for athletes trying to qualify for the BC Summer Games. We look forward to hosting some beach tournaments in 2014,” she said. The Avalanche organization and the EKVC thank everyone who helped with the court restoration, the numerous volunteers, Frank Sandor from Sandor Rentals who donated the use of a bobcat and Shane Hebditch from Hebditch Holdings Inc. who donated both materials and time. Ron Sexsmith is coming to Cranbrook Submitted Canadian born folkpop singer and songwriter Ron Sexmith will be performing at the Key City Theatre with special guest Jenn Grant. Ron Sexsmith is a Canadian singer-songwriter who started his first band when he was 14 years old. By the age of 17 he was playing the bar circuit in his hometown of St. Catharines, Ontario, where he quickly gained a reputation as “the oneman jukebox”. When his son was born in 1985 Ron decided to start writing his own songs, and soon after released his first album on cassette “Out of the Duff”. Over the years he has released a total of 13 albums, growing in popularity and acquiring a number of famous admirers. Elvis Costello, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Steve Earle, and Sheryl Crow have all praised the Canadian pop-folk artist. Additionally, Sexsmith co-wrote “Brandy Alexander” with Feist and his song “secret heart” has been covered by Rod Stewart, Fiest and Nick Lowe. In 2011 he won a JUNO award for songwriter of the year for the song “what-

Most vegetable gardeners are in full harvest mode right now, reaping the fruits of their labour and making sure to get the most out of the bounty by eating it fresh, storing, canning and preserving. It can be difficult to take some time and think ahead to the next growing season already. There is one task, however, that can give you an enormous head start if you complete it now and that is planting your garlic. It is hard to imagine cooking - especially your Mediterranean comfort foods - without the use of garlic. Growing your own is easy to do, and besides its culinary uses and role in home remedies, garlic has other benefits for your garden as well. The “Stinky Rose,” as garlic is sometimes referred to, can act as a natural insect and pest repellent. In fact, it is one of the active ingredients in Bobbex deer and animal repellents. Garlic can be planted early in the spring, but fall planting is a better way to go. You will likely find that your bulbs will be bigger and have more flavour when you get them in the ground in the fall and harvest the following summer. If you can, try to get garlic planted six to eight weeks before the first hard frost is expected. One thing you can do is protect your garlic from winter frosts with a heavy layer of straw. Garlic grows from individual cloves. Make sure to get garlic bulbs meant for planting at your local garden centre, rather than using bulbs found in the produce aisle at the grocery store. These types of garlic are often unsuited for our growing area or have been treated to prevent sprouting, thus making their shelf life longer. There are three types of garlic: softneck, stiffneck and great-headed varieties. Softneck garlic varieties, such as ‘Persian Star’ or ‘Mother of Pearl’, have necks that stay soft after harvest, making them ideal for creating the traditional garlic braid. These varieties have a strong, intense flavour, but are less winter-hardy than other types. Stiffneck varieties, like the ‘Carpathian’, grow one ring of cloves around a hard stem, rather than a layer of cloves. Their flavour is a bit milder than the softneck types and they tend not to store as well or as long. They are, however, extremely cold hardy. The third type, the great-headed garlic is also referred to as Elephant garlic. They are less hardy in our climate and as they are more closely related to leeks, their flavour is more like onion than traditional garlic. Their bulbs are extremely large with only about four cloves per bulb. As with other bulbs, planting garlic is not difficult to do. Before you get going, select a nice, sunny spot and add compost material or other organic matter to the soil, ensuring good drainage of the area. Break apart your bulbs into individual cloves, being careful not to nick them and to keep the papery husk on each clove. Damaged cloves are far more susceptible to disease. Place the cloves in the soil about four inches apart and two inches deep - or about as far as your thumb will go - with about a foot between rows. They have to be in their upright position with the wide root side facing down and the pointed end facing up. After you put all the cloves in the ground, lightly tamp the soil back over your garlic. Now just sit back and wait for the first shoots to emerge in the spring. Till next time… happy gardening, Submitted by Kerstin

Think Like a Watershed symposium coming John Ralston Saul, one of Canada’s renowned intellectuals and author of A Fair Country, will travel the Basin and present at the Salmon Festival in Revelstoke, and at Fairmont Hot Springs, as part of the Columbia Basin Watershed Network’s “Think Like a Watershed” Symposium. Ralston Saul - author, philosopher, historian (and husband of former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson), will focus on cross-cultural interactions between Aboriginal and nonAboriginal Canadians in relation to the environment and freshwater management in the Columbia River Basin. “Within B.C., First Nations including the Ktunaxa, Shuswap and Okanagan have relied on the Columbia River to provide for their well-being, of which salmon were a key component” said Bill Green, Director of the Canadian Columbia River
Inter-tribal Fisheries Commission. Since the construction of Grand Coulee dam in 1941, the ratification of the Columbia River Treaty in 1964, and the construction of several dams near the U.S. border, salmon have been unable to return to the B.C. portion of the river. The historical journey of the salmon that once migrated to the headwaters of the Columbia River is the unifying theme for this year’s Watershed Symposium, which will examine the challenges and opportunities of holistic water governance, while considering First Nations leadership, climate change, and upcoming policy changes in the Columbia Basin. The Symposium hosted by the Columbia Basin Watershed Network, with support from Living Lakes Canada, will also have several key presenters, panels and round table discussions
with Robert Sandford, Chair of the Canadian Partnership for the UN Water for Life Decade, Oliver Brandes of the POLIS Project on Ecological Governance, Stephen Kakfwi the former premiere of the NWT, Deborah Curran from the University of Victoria Faculty of Law, and Nelson Jatel of the Okanagan Basin Water Board. “The vision for the event is to move toward a Columbia Basin watershed governance entity,” said Heather Leschied, Chair of the Columbia Basin Watershed Network. “This symposium will build an important dialogue to improve the way water is protected and managed in the Basin on a holistic scale.” Event Schedule September 27th, at 6:30 p.m., Ralston Saul will address members of the North Columbia Environmental Society at the Performing Arts Centre in Revelstoke as part of the annual Salmon Festival celebrations. September 28th, at 6 p.m., Ralston Saul will

One man’s journey to follow the steps of Ghengis Khan is coming Submitted There’s an ancient Kazakh saying, “To understand the wolf, you must put on the skin of the wolf and look through its eyes.” For young Australian adventurer Tim Cope, understanding meant travelling 10,000 kilometres on horseback – alone – across the Eurasian steppe through Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, and Hungary, following the route taken by the legendary Genghis Khan as he forged his great empire. The award-winning film, On The Trail of Genghis Khan, chronicles Cope’s journey from the former Mongol capital, Karakorum, to the Danube. The film will be screened at Key City Theatre on Friday,
October 4 at 7:00 PM, presented by Wildsight Kimberley-Cranbrook. When Cope set out on his journey, there was no certainty – no camera crew, no escape route – and he could barely ride a horse. Over three and a half years, he braved plateaux populated by wolves, the glaciated Altai Mountains, deep forests, extreme cold and heat, violent clashes between conflicting communities, and suffered the greatest tragedy of his life. “The Trail of Genghis Khan is an aweinspiring film,” says Wildsight KimberleyCranbrook Branch Manager Helen Sander. “It allows us to discover Tim’s insights into the nomadic way of life and join him on a personal rite of passage. Our screening of this
film last year in Kimberley created quite a buzz, and we’re excited to be able to show it in Cranbrook.” The film will be shown at Key City Theatre on Friday, October 4 at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation, with a suggested donation of $10. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The epic runs 165 minutes. To watch the trailer and find out more about Tim Cope, visit www. wildsight.ca/events and scroll to October 4th on the calendar. You can experience Tim Cope’s Ghengis Khan adventure at the Key City Theatre on October 4.
