During the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Excellence Awards Breakfast on Sept. 20, the Cariboo Regional District (CRD), Esk’etemc, the Districts of 100 Mile House and Wells and the Cities of Quesnel and Williams Lake were awarded with the Excellence in Partnerships Award. The local governments and First Nation were presented with the award for their submission about
the St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School Commemorative Project. Earlier in the week, the UBCM declared 2013 as the Year of Reconciliation. “The Cariboo Regional District is truly honoured to be part of this journey in reconciliation and it is humbling to have won this award for this truly collaborative project,” said CRD chair Al Richmond. “By gaining a better understanding of each other’s cultures,
heritage and the challenges we face, we will be able to create a better Cariboo-Chilcotin for all our residents.” Said Esk’etemc Chief Fred Robbins: “Reconciliation has begun and we need to keep working together to ensure the future and strength of our communities. This is just a start, but it is a positive and vital step in our shared journey of remembering, recovering and reconciling of
our communities, to begin a new Legacy that will span the test of time.” Said Williams Lake Mayor Kerry Cook: “We are proud to be a partner in this life-changing event, and to participate in the vision of our local First Nations leadership,” said. “We look forward to working together and to continue Continued on 3

Power plan released for consultation
Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister responsible for Core Review, is directing BC Hydro to release its draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) and undertake a final round of consultation with First Nations, key stakeholders and the public. The draft IRP includes BC Hydro’s recommended actions to meet an expected 40 per cent increase in the province’s electricity demand over the next 20 years while keeping rates affordable. the good work that has been done in building relationships in our community.” Said Quesnel Mayor Mary Sjostrom: “On behalf of Quesnel city council, I consider it an honour to share in the St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School Commemorative Project. This initiative has been of benefit to the region, by allowing us the opportunity to learn about the social injustices suffered by our friends and neighbours and by allowing survivors to share their stories on their healing journey.” Said District of 100 Mile House Mayor Mitch Campsall: “I applaud the work of all those involved in the reconciliation initiative. This award speaks volumes as to the positive working relationship that developed and continues to flourish as a result of our collective commitment working collaboratively with our First Nations partners.” Said Wells Mayor Robin Sharpe: “The District of Wells is honoured to be part of the process. Reconciliation means a lot to all of us. We are looking forward
to proudly celebrating Orange Shirt Day on Sept. 30.” The UB CM Community Excellence Awards are held each year during the UBCM Convention to acknowledge and encourage best practices among regional districts and municipalities in B.C. Further information about the UBCM Excellence Awards is available online at www. ubcm.ca.
BC Hydro produced an initial draft of the IRP for public consultation in May 2012. Additional consultations, which will run to Oct. 18, will provide the opportunity for comments on changes that have been made to the draft IRP since that time. Government has also directed BC Hydro to seek additional feedback on the variables that can impact electricity forecasts and on its contingency plans to address those variables. Following these consultations, BC Hydro will re-submit its IRP

Feeding a child’s brain
Living Well
Health tips… for your whole life. By Cindy Bossio Children who eat nutritious food do better at school. Here are a few tips to make healthy eating part of your back to school routine: • A little planning goes a long way – make lunches the night before, cut up vegetables for an easy after-school snack or grab something out of the freezer for tomorrow’s dinner. • Eating first thing in the morning kick starts the brain and helps children be more alert during the school day. Free up time to eat in the morning by putting the toaster on the counter, pulling out the cereal, and setting the table the night before. Tired of cereal and toast? Try poached eggs and cheese on a whole wheat English muffin, oatmeal topped with walnuts and strawberries, or a yogurt, granola and fruit parfait.
Interior Health
• Involve your children when planning, preparing and packing lunches. The more pride your child has in his lunch, the more likely he is to eat it. Lunches with high protein foods like beans, nuts or meat keep kids full and help them concentrate throughout the afternoon. Include foods from each of the four food groups to provide balance. • Wrap it up – grab a whole grain tortilla and any extras from last night’s dinner, such as cold chicken or roast beef, and your child’s favourite veggies, cheese and hummus or guacamole. • Dunk a lunch – try pita triangles, carrot, cucumber or red pepper sticks and bean dip. Finish off the meal with cut up fruit and yogurt. For more lunch ideas and recipes, check out w w w.interiorhealth. c a / Yo u r H e a l t h / SchoolHealth/
SchoolNutrition. • Children are often hungry when they arrive home from school. Having an afterschool snack prepped and ready for your child helps them make a healthy choice and gives you a little time to get dinner on the table. Try offering fresh fruit or cut-up veggies and dip. Nut butters, whole grain crackers, cubes of cheese and yogurt also make healthy snacks. Add fresh or frozen fruit to a pitcher of water for a refreshing, thirst-quenching after school drink. • Preparing, cooking, and eating meals together provides time to connect. Children
who eat with their families once a day perform and behave better at school. Meal time is a great time for parents to model healthy food choices and to “check
in” with their children. It is also a great time to chat about another exciting school year. Cindy Bossio is a community nutritionist with Interior Health.

Carefree Manor residents happily waved and cheered as the Toy Run motorcycle procession made a stop during the annual event on Sept. 15. The riders parked in a lineup in front of Carefree Manor on Cariboo Trail to visit with the residents and receive toys for the Food Bank.
Annual Toy Run downsized Ken Alexander Free Press
Organizer Phil Doddridge says the 13th Annual Toy Run was down in terms of riders and donations, but the enthusiasm of the participants was as high energy as ever. Noting they had about 30 motorcycle riders and a few hot rods and classic vehicles in the ride, he adds the lower numbers may have had a lot to do with the great weather on Sept. 15. “People were still able to do stuff on the weekend and they’re busy.” Doddridge says the event was downsized this year because he didn’t have a lot of time to organize it. “We didn’t do a raffle, show and shine and give away prizes. It takes a lot of work to do that sort of thing. It’s unfortunate because we’re just trying to raise money [for the 100 Mile House Food Bank Society]. At the end of the Toy Run, Food Bank secretary Kathy Haveman provided pop, coffee, sandwiches and potato salad for donations, he says, adding the participants appreciated the effort. “[The Food Bank volunteers] worked really hard and I can’t thank them enough.” After cruising through 100 Mile House, the Toy Run participants rode through
the 108 Mile Ranch and then returned to 100 Mile for a stop at Carefree Manor to visit with the residents. The participants roared up Cariboo Trail and parked their bikes and vehicles in front of the manor. It is the highlight of the ride for participants, as well as Manor residents. Doddridge was the first off his bike and quickly made his way to greet the residents who were seated, with Teddy Bears in their hands, in front of the Manor. “They were having a blast.... It was a real treat to meet them and they seemed to be having a great time. We were happy to do that.” Doddridge says he appreciated all of the riders who participated in the Toy Run because it’s a good cause.

Studio to Studio event a win
By Reg Berrington The Studio 2 Studio self-guided tour of the 108 Mile Ranch was a great event for the eight artists, the visitors and the South Cariboo Health Foundation (SCHF). The tour was set up to showcase the creative skills of eight who live at the 108 Mile Ranch on Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Finding the locations was easy, as the artists had set up signage at their homes. The reception from each artist was great and very informative, and each one was willing to answer any questions concerning their particular skills. Twenty-five per cent of the artists’ sales and any donations went to the SCHF. SCHF fundraising co-ordinator M-J
the studios, she adds the foundation made close to $400 for the purchase of hospital equipment. “If the board wants to do it again next year, the artists were certainly keen and our guests just loved it. We’re looking at keeping it going. It was our first and, hopefully, there will be a second.” Cousin says the SCHF is dedicated to supporting the delivery of health care in the South Cariboo.

Online textbooks relieve education cost
Fifteen open, online textbooks in subject areas ranging from math and chemistry to marketing, psychology, and business have been reviewed by post-secondary faculty and are now freely available for download from www. BCcampus. More than 38 instructors and professors from post-secondary institutions around the
province reviewed existing open textbooks for quality and relevance in British Columbia. These 15 textbooks have been found to be of high quality and appropriate for use in B.C. institutions. The open textbooks will be another option for faculty and instructors who ultimately choose the textbooks they wish to assign to
their students. Students and instructors can download open textbooks electronically and pay nothing, and soon they will also be able to order a printed version at a fraction of traditional textbook costs. Even if an open textbook is not being used as the primary text for their course, students can still use them as
valuable supplementary learning resources. This is the first phase of B.C.’s open textbook project to develop free, online, open textbooks for 40 popular postsecondary subject areas. Government has committed to a further 20 open textbooks. When fully implemented, more than 200,000 students each year could benefit from
the open textbook project, each saving hundreds of dollars in textbook costs. The project is being co-ordinated on government’s behalf by BCcampus, a publicly funded organization that aims to make higher education available to everyone through the smart use of collaborative information technology services.
Fewer forest fires during sunny summer By Tom Fletcher Black Press
British Columbia has emerged from one of its sunnier summers in recent years with a below-average number of forest fires. As of Sept. 1, the provincial wildfire management branch reported 1,687 wildfires for the season, compared to an average year of nearly 2,000 fires. This year’s fires burned a total of 11,434 hectares, far less than the average damage of more than 130,000 ha. Wet weather returned with school to large parts of the province, after a sunny summer that saw several dry-weather records set. For the first time since records were kept, Vancouver airport recorded no rain for the entire month of July. The number of reported fires so far this year is slightly higher than the total for last year, but the total area
burned in 2012 was nearly 10 times greater. The province spent $133 million on firefighting last year, a total that should be much lower when the bills are added up for 2013. Open burning remains banned for the Southeast Fire Centre region until as late as Sept. 20. Campfire bans were lifted Aug. 26 for the Kamloops and Coastal Fire Centre regions, and earlier in the month for the Northwest, Cariboo and Prince George regions as dry conditions were relieved. Despite public infor-
mation campaigns and open burning restrictions, provincial statistics continue to show about 40 per cent
of wildfires are human caused, with most of the rest sparked by lightning. The relatively quiet fire

Centre on Airport Road. “We’ve got something in our club for everyone,” says club representative Wayne Venos. “It’s lots of fun. It’s really low key. There are leagues for every-
body. That’s the beauty of curling.” The club has close to 250 members. Leagues this year include Men’s (Wednesday evenings), Ladies (Thursday evenings), Mixed (Tuesday evenings), Drop In (midday Wednesdays), Juniors (Tuesday afternoons) and Business (Monday evenings). “We want to increase and promote curling.

Hatfield suggested boys and men should be mentored and supported to think that “my manhood is mine to create” and that “this is the new cool and the new script we should all be adopting in our support of the males in our lives.”
It’s a healthy sport. It’s a great way for new people in our district to meet new people.” New curlers are welcome and for beginners there are free curling lessons offered from Oct. 7 to 10 at 6 p.m. Interested people can call 250-395-4237 to register.

10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this! Ford event benefits local charity Carole Rooney Free Press
The 100 Mile House Lions Club is Sunrise Ford’s latest charity recipient of the Drive One 4 UR Community event on Sept. 21. A total of 107 community members showed up at the SaveOn-Foods parking lot to take a 15-minute test drive of a new Ford product, each one helping raise $20 through Ford Canada’s popular charity event. Around $2,140 will go to the 100 Mile Lions, with the exact amount tentative until Ford Canada confirms everyone filled out their information correctly. Lions vice-president Neil VanderHorst says the club is very grateful to Sunrise Ford, SaveOn-Foods and all the folks who test drove a Ford to help raise funds. “Save-On-Foods hosted the event, but we also sold hotdogs outside the front door, both raising money and

referring people over to the event. So, we used their barbecue supplies and they gave us a great deal on those.” Each year, the local Lions give out about $15,000 to the community, he says, adding the event will help fund those contributions. “$5,000 of this goes to the [Lions] soccer field every year over four years, to meet our commitment to that field.”
VanderHorst explains another $3,000 recently went out in scholarships to some Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School students heading into university. The balance goes to various other worthwhile causes in the
community, he adds. The club’s new 100 Mile Lion mascot – aka VanderHorst – also made an appearance at the event. The children in the store and parking lot were delighted to see this cute and fluffy
100 Mile Lion parading around during the event. “It was great to have the Drive One 4 UR Community event helping the 100 Mile House Lions Club. And, it is good to see different community members helping each other, making our town a better place and giving each other a hand with our various fundraisers and events.” The 100 Mile House Lions Club meets 7-8:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of each month at B.J.’s Donuts & Eatery at 305 Birch Ave., and the club is eager to recruit new members.

Bear prowling around near cemetery
A 100 Mile House resident is cautioning folks about a black bear on the prowl in the Aspen Ridge neighbourhood. Victoria Feist says she saw the bear beside her house, in an empty lot near the end of Jens Street at 931 Fraser Ave., around 7 a.m. on Sept. 24. She adds a neighbour had seen a black bear the night before, presumably the same one. The area is on the fringe of the town along the forested area west of Bridge Creek and east of Highway 97, Feist explains, close to the 100 Mile House Municipal Cemetery. Noting the Conservation Officer Service has been notified, she says other area residents and visitors should be aware of the roaming bear, especially those with children playing outside or walking to the bus in the early mornings.

Website identifies risky medication, substance cocktails
A new first-of-its kind website helps youth and healthcare professionals/ partners understand the risks of mixing prescription medications, alcohol and other drugs. The DrugCocktails. ca website was funded by BC Mental Health & Addiction Services (BCMHAS), an agency
Drive cautiously on resource roads The BC Forest Safety Council (BCFSC) saluted British Columbia’s numerous log-hauling professionals and acknowledged their continuing work to ensure the safety of all road users. Here are some tips for driving on resource roads: • Expect large industrial vehicles that need more space and time to stop. • Reduce speed – never exceed 80 km/ hour, and drive according to road conditions and visibility. • Yield to industrial traffic. • Drive with your lights on. • Stop only in safe visible locations. • Observe and obey road signs. • Always have an emergency plan and kit, extra food, clothing and water. • Don’t drink and drive. • Stay alert! Focus on driving. • Wear your seatbelt. “Every day needs to be a safe driving day on all our roads. My best advice to anyone, whether driving for business or pleasure, is never get in a vehicle to drive unless you are well-rested, prepared for the trip and ready to give 100 per cent of your focus and attention to the road,” says BCFSC director Rick Walters.
of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). It was developed in partnership with researchers from BCMHAS, BC Children’s Hospital Pharmacy Department and Youth Health Program, PHSA, Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the University of Ottawa. DrugCocktails.ca expands on the 2002 British Columbia print publication “Cocktails” by add-
ing more than 80 new medications and creating separate interactive versions for: • Youth, providing practical plain language warnings and information; and • Health-care professionals and counsellors working with youth, providing detailed medical information underlying the warnings. Youth and professionals can type a medication name into
the website, and learn the risks of combining that medication with any of 10 substance categories, such as alcohol, marijuana and various street drugs. The website is harm reduction-focused, intuitive and easy to use. Warning icons that indicate “Serious Risk of Harm,” “Think First” or “Unknown Dangers” help youth identify risks of medication-substance combinations at a glance.
