New brewery takes bullet hits

RCMP investigating Davie Street shooting incident AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After RCMP investigated what appears to be two bullet holes into the side of 185 Davie, brewery owner Russ Ovans is taking the high road. “We love this community, the Barkerville Brewing proprietor said. “We’re here for the long haul. Sept. 19, brewmaster
Troy Rudolph called in to report what looked like two bullet holes through the front windows of the building. RCMP subsequently responded to the call. “It’s too bad because it’s expensive and it’s money we could have put into free tastings for the community, Ovans said. The two holes struck, what will be, the tasting and merchandise room.

“We’re going to have hats, t-shirts and free samples, Ovans said, noting in particular, the opportunity to purchase a growler. A growler is a 64 ounce ceramic glass refillable bottle. For $5 one can visit the brewery, sample some suds, choose their favourite, fill the growler and take it home. Barkerville Brewing
Company will have three core brands to choose from: the 18-Karat Ale, the Prospector’s Peril Irish Ale and the Wandering Camel. “We plan to have a fourth on tap and in stores, Ovans said, adding the fourth will be a “seasonal brew switched every three months. “We’re telling the story of the Cariboo Gold Rush, he said.
Good day, Quesnel. Thanks for reading — and that includes loyal subscriber L. Ostlund! To join the Observer family, please call 250-992-2121 and ask for circulation.
“We want to tell the story of Barkerville and Quesnel really embraces it’s past – hence the Gold Pan City. Ovans said the location and building were perfect for his micro-brewery venture. “It’s strategically located and at a reasonable price, he said. “It’s a fantastic lot. So far renovations have been ongoing since he first
took possession Aug. 31. Most recently they were approved for a facade improvement grant for $5,000 and painting is expected to commence Friday, weather permitting. Ovans hopes to be open in December. “We cannot wait to start selling beer to the good folks of Quesnel, he said. “The people of the Cariboo deserve their own authentic beer.

Mernett elected as CCBAC chair
The Cariboo Chilcotin Beetle Action Coalition (CCBAC) announced Chad Mernett has been elected chairperson for the 2013–2014 term. Mernett is a director for the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) and takes over this leadership role from Williams Lake Mayor Kerry Cook. Mernett extended his thanks to Mayor Cook for her vision and leadership over the years. “Kerry Cook provided the CCBAC with strong leadership and vision to develop and implement the strategic priorities of the coalition,” Mernett said. “I look forward to using the momentum generated by mayor Cook and moving the Cariboo Chilcotin forward to diversify our economy while ensuring environmental and social sustainability.” As a result of the recently completed CCBAC strategic plan, the board has been working to update its goals and objectives to reflect the current economic climate of the Cariboo Chilcotin. Mernett is excited to implement some of the key recommendations from this review during his tenure as chair.
“We are currently reviewing and developing a grant award system that more accurately reflects our vision and goals,” he said. “We have also approved a new communications plan that includes development of a new website and other initiatives that will keep the community more closely connected to the work of CCBAC.” The success of the CCBAC is due to the high level of regional cooperation. First Nations and local governments along with the industry and environmental sectors come together to evaluate strategic opportunities. “I am looking forward to the CCBAC team taking the lead on high priority regional projects and using the strength of our team to move us forward on initiatives that will help to diversify our economy and support our social well-being for years to come,” he said. The CCBAC was created in 2005 by a variety of community leaders who were concerned about the impacts that the massive Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) epidemic would have on the Cariboo Chilcotin region.

all is definitely settling in nicely around Quesnel. It’s a beautiful time of year when the weather cools slightly and the leaves turn yellow and gold in and around our community. It is a great time to showcase our city for visitors, especially those from overseas. On Thursday, Oct. 3, I hope that all of you help me welcome our special guests from our Sister City Shiraoi, Japan. Mayor Toda and 10 other delegates will be arriving in Quesnel that day and begin a whirlwind tour of activities around the community beginning at Shiraoi House. Mayor Toda will be joined by the Chair of Shiraoi Council Kohei Yamamoto, Board of Education representative Makoto Ota, Head of Twinning Society Yuzuru Sakamoto and Secretary of Twinning Society Kazumi Niioka. The remaining delegates include students and adult residents of Shiraoi. It will be a wonderful opportunity for all of them to experience our language and culture. This twinning relationship has spanned 32 years. Between Oct. 3 – 6, the group will be toured through two of our mills, the College of New Caledonia, our Youth Soccer Facility, Shiraoi Gardens and Art Gallery at the Arts and Recreation Centre and the Quesnel and District Museum. They will have plenty of free time to site see and, of course, shop in and around our city. We will join them in a walk along our famous River Front Trail to Ceal Tingley Park and plan to

On Saturday, they will have the opportunity to visit our Farmer’s Market, take in some local entertainment and learn about our great community. The Quesnel/Shiraoi Twinning Society has done an incredible job in organizing the arrival of the delegation and coordinating their visit with such noteworthy local events. The Twinning Society consists of a dedicated group of Quesnel residents who continue to build our relationship with Shiraoi. The relationship between the two communities has sparked many exchanges and many long-standing friendships. The society has done an excellent job in bringing the two cities together and to promote cultural understanding and friendship between the Canadian and Japanese people. Over the past 32 years, more than 1,000 local residents have exchanged with Shiraoi, delighting in the international kinship. This visit and others are

Have You Protected Your Family’s Financial Future? One of the most important moves you can make is to ensure that you have adequate life insurance. Of course, you may have some insurance through your employer — but is it sufficient? If something were to happen to you, your family could face some enormous financial obligations — with a large part of their financial resources suddenly missing. By purchasing additional life insurance, as needed, you could enable your family to accomplish the following:

• Raise your children — A family might spend more than $190,000 to raise a child between birth and age 18, according to research from the home economics section of Manitoba Agriculture. Clearly, the proceeds of a life insurance policy would be enormously valuable in helping your family cope with these costs. • Pay for university — A university education may be the best investment you can make in your children’s future — but it won’t come cheaply. On average, undergraduate students at Canadian universities paid $4,917 in tuition in the 2009–2010 school year, according to Statistics Canada. And room and board could easily tack on an extra $6,000, according to the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Based on these figures, and assuming even a modest 3% annual inflation rate, a child born this year could expect to pay more than $78,000 for four years of university. Insurance could help cover the high costs of higher education. • Pay off your mortgage — If you’re buying your first home or moving into a different one, you will be asked if you want to purchase mortgage insurance. However, life insurance may be a better option. If you purchase mortgage insurance, the lender is the beneficiary, but when you own a life insurance policy, you get to choose the beneficiary, so you can name your spouse. Once your surviving spouse receives the tax-free death benefit, he or she can pay off the mortgage or invest the money to generate an income stream that can help cover living expenses and continue the mortgage payments. • Pay off other debts — You may have car loans, credit card bills and other types of debt. Life insurance can help your family members pay off these debts without jeopardizing the household’s cash flow. • Help support your surviving spouse’s retirement — While you’re working, some of the money you put away in your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and various other accounts may also eventually help support your spouse in retirement. Without your income and these continuing contributions, could your spouse still enjoy the retirement lifestyle you both have envisioned? The proceeds from a life insurance policy could prove important in helping your surviving spouse during his or her retirement years. As you can see, adequate life insurance is indispensable to your family’s financial security. Consult a financial advisor to determine if you’ve got the appropriate level of coverage, or if you need to add more. uring the provincial election in May, the presumed NDP victory left pundits wondering how many cabinet ministers might come from Greater Victoria and the Island, and how that might impact the good fortune of our economy. Voters of course delivered anything but what the pollsters expected, and once again relegated the region’s provincial NDP representation to opposition roles. With Adrian Dix now the outgoing NDP leader (the second to resign in less than three years) Greater Victoria now has a strong chance to be home to the Official Opposition’s new leader. Second runner up to Dix in 2011, Juan de Fuca MLA and Langford resident John Horgan is arguably Greater Victoria’s strongest candidate for the top job. A three-term MLA and with a high profile as energy critic and house leader, Horgan is the regions most charismatic probable candidate to lead the NDP. During his resignation announcement last week, Dix said this province doesn’t need a “second (B.C.) Liberal party.” It’s advice any leadership candidate should heed. The NDP might be tempted more than ever to fundamentally rewrite party policy and edge toward the political right as a reaction to the party’s election loss, and the earlier round of infighting that led to Carole James stepping down in 2011. The problem with the NDP isn’t its core values and ideology. The problem is the NDP picks its leaders more on party loyalty than who has the spirit and drive to connect with voters. NDP party members and insiders have done a lot of navel gazing this year about their election loss. It’s time for the opposition to refocus and think about what kind of leader it wants to act as a check and counterweight to the Liberals’ economic agenda. –Black Press
First time stepping into the ring T
ouching gloves, me and Kyle Tessier circled for a while before I threw the first punch I’ve thrown at another human since I was in grade school. There I was, circling like Tyson or Holyfield, measuring up my opponent with my steely eyed gaze. I threw a left jab. I threw a straight right. And I’m pretty sure it felt closer to a pillow fight than a boxing match when my flurry landed. It turns out throwing punches at a moving target can really mess with your form (and your head). I put together one good one-two combination and that felt good. And Kyle was working on defence, so I didn’t take too many punches either. Thus ends my bout at the Two Rivers Boxing Club. The month with the club has been enlightening and interesting. It has taught me a couple things. First: Boxing is intense. I have been sore for most of my month with the club – granted I went from doing nothing to working out with the club, but if I was in better shape, I probably would have just ended up working harder. Remember, the club hosts
Jonas Gagnon WINTER WEIGHT both those looking for a workout and serious boxers who are training to win. You won't feel out of place just because you can't throw around the heavy bag like Matt O'Flynn (who may be a robot), but if you're not pushing yourself while everyone else is sweating and breathing hard, you probably will. Matt Tessier said after a month or two new comers usually hit their stride – so you got that going for you, which is nice. There are some workouts, however, I don't think I would ever get used to, like throwing around the heavy bag. Believe me, after going three rounds bouncing around the 100 lb bag, like it’s a small child, you will be properly tired. If you're looking for a way to push yourself and really get into shape, the Two Rivers Boxing Club is a great place to end your search.

The power from that pushes up your leg, as you drop your knee inward, pushing the power into your hips, which swivel, pushing a little more power into the punch. The swivel moves through your core, picking up steam from a variety of muscle groups until it bottle necks at your shoulder, then shoots out through your arm with power. And when all that comes together, you know it and all is right with the world for a millisecond. And if the perfect punch didn't do it for you, a freezie and a bit of friendly chatter at the end of a hard workout will. The club costs $50 a month, which does not include insurance, which is variable, depending. For information call Matt and Tracy at 250747-4495 or 250-9918335 or email the club at tworiversboxing@outlook. com. Next month I move to the gymnasts floor. It should be an interesting change. The upside of this is that the results you get from the three day-a-week workout are fairly rapid. Also, as an addendum, skipping is not just for 12 year-old girls – it’s hard. After a month of it I still catch my foot every ten rotations or so. All that being said, the second thing I learned was the Two Rivers Boxing Club is full of great, knowledgable people who want you to stick around and practice with them. If you need to rest, or just can't figure out how to do a right hook, everyone will do their best to help you out. Going from flailing to throwing a straight right, I received plenty of helpful advice and encouragement. Though walking in a pair of shorts found around the house and a white tshirt may feel weird, and believe me it did for me, it’s pretty standard dress and no one will look askance of you for not wearing boxing shoes and shorts. Also, the passion the coaches and boxers have for the sport is infectious and will have you wondering about a style and strategy of your own. Last: Nothing feels better than throwing the perfect punch. Follow with me through a straight right: it

Best province in the world Editor: I think it is time that someone responded to Bert deVink and his recent article ‘Democracy or Regime’ which appeared in your publication Sept. 20th. I would guess that he is, in a subtle manner, attempting to compare the government of our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper to that of Adolph Hitler. To the latter he refers to as ‘the man with the funny black moustache’ and once again reminds us that he was living in Holland during the Hitler

occupation. Hitler occupied Holland 73 years ago and I doubt that few people under 60 years of age, even know who he is. Anyway folks, that man with the funny black moustache must be Adolph Hitler. deVink fails to mention that many, many Canadian soldiers, who fought to liberate Holland, are buried there. deVink is, as a result, living in the best country in the world, not to mention the best province. As for our prime minister, he was elected to a majority government, by the majority
of voters, in the last federal election. He is the first prime minister we have had who holds a degree in economics. The previous four, Trudeau, Mulroney, Cretien and Paul Martin, were all lawyers from Montreal, Quebec. deVink also takes a shot at Christy Clark, our premier. Wasn’t she just recently re-elected to an increased majority government, by a vast majority of B.C. voters? Goodness, we now even have a local Liberal cabinet minister representing us in Victoria as a result of that
election. And to those people who have never holidayed in California or Las Vegas, such as my wife and I have, you’d better hurry and pack, because (according to deVink) they will be disappearing into desert sand within 10 to 15 years. That is about it, and I just thought it was time that deVink had a response to the repeated expression of his own views. Time someone responds and expresses his views. Paul Drescher Kersley

Quesnel School Boy racer's, #82 Colton Shepherd, #671 Jackson Nickolet and #52 Brad Perron, slidding through the mud in the first corner on the weekend in Prince George. Gerri Shepherd photo
Quesnel motocross racer's were seen as some of the dirtiest riders while they were out once again this past weekend racing in their second last race of the season in Prince George. From plus 30 degrees a week prior in Williams Lake to only plus four degrees along with the cold wind and pouring down rain, riders pulled out their winter coats to compete in the muddiest race of the season. By the end of Sundays moto's
you could no longer determine who was who on the track as the mud covered the racer's from head to toe. Goggles were thrown off as the mud covered lenses made it impossible for the racer's to see. For many it was a nightmare as they slid and tried their best to make their way through the mud and up the hills but for Quesnel rider Spencer O'Flynn it was a trophy ride. Spencer rode in the 85cc

class 7 - 11 year olds taking first place both Saturday and Sunday while others gave up and left the track. The Watson family also didn't get discouraged and cleaned up well with dad Brian taking a second in Plus 40 on Saturday and a first on Sunday in the Vet Jr's. Son Haiden and Austin also rode excellent through the muddy terrain with Haiden taking a fourth on Saturday in
Jr MX 2 and other son Austin riding in the 12 - 16 year olds in the 85cc class also taking a first and second place trophy home. Colton Shepherd, Jackson Nickolet and Brad Perron racing 250 four strokes in School Boy and Jr. MX classes also rode hard with Nickolet and Shepherd both taking home second and third place trophies. Scott Davis, racing in the Vet Jr and Plus 40 classes, also
slid his way around the track, taking home a second place trophy on Sunday in the Vet Masters. Racers head out Friday for their final BCMA race in Ashcroft, Sept. 28 and 29 to race for their final points in the series. Hitting their stride Cross country runners from Correlieu and QJS made the trip to Vanderhoof for their first race of the season last Saturday. Both teams performed well, with a couple of the Correlieu jr. boys stepping up to the longer, senior track. "The QJS team is off to a very strong start with more than triple the number of runners compared to last year," QJS coach, Scott Trueman said. "The season looks promising because we will be able to field a full team for boys and girls, thus increasing our chances of qualifying to compete at the provincial championships." Grade 11 Konrad Teetzen was fourth in the sr. boys race, followed closely by Gr. 10 boys Cole Dinsdale in fifth and Dillion Cathcart in eighth. The two junior boys chose to run in the senior boys race in order to run the 6.3 km course, which they will have to do in the zone championship
race to qualify for provincials. Kyra Teetzen also ran well, placing second in the jr. girls, followed by first year runners Mia Kozak in third, Baylee McGillivray in sixth and Brea Wood in eighth. Amanda Albers, also in her first year of running x-country, placed ninth in senior girls. Olivia Baptiste was first overall in the girls’ race. In the bantam girls category, Avery Drew was second, Lyra Jonasson third, and Cassidy Giesbrecht fourth. In juvenile girls, Olivia Baptiste was first, Grace McTaggart second. In Bantam boys, Olin Lee was first and Braeden Smith third. In junior boys, Justice Quamme placed in eighth. Racing up to the senior category against grade 12 athletes, Brennan Schwartz was ninth, Dane Jacobsen tenth, Ryan Elden 11th and Liam Matzner 15th.

1344 Cariboo Hwy. N 250-991-5150
Looking forward to another great hockey season From the City of Quesnel
“The practice is high tempo; the guys are having fun.” –Coach Brian Kozak
and was last year’s laegue MVP, is excited to start the new season. “It’s a new year, we’ll start off fresh. We’ve got some new players that’ll help,” he said. Along with new players on the ice, the ‘Roos have a new face behind the bench and a returning coach as well. Steve Williams will reprise his role as assistant coach, sharing the duty with Marsh and new comer to the coaching field, if not the ‘Roos, Nick Patchett. Patchett made the decision to quit playing the game after last year, but didn’t want to leave the team behind. So when he knew the team was looking for another, younger coach, he stepped up. “I’m just trying to help however I can,” he said. The depth of talent behind the bench will allow the coaches more leeway, as some, like Kozak, travel during the season due to work. The real year, and the real ‘Roos,
don’t begin for another couple weeks, in October, but the hard news for fans is that they won’t see a game on home ice until the end of the month. In fact, the ‘Roos start the season with a double header weekend on the road, starting against the Prince Rupert Rampage on Oct. 5, followed by last year’s champions, the Kitimat Ice Demons. It’s a bit of an intimidating start for the ‘Roos, but should kick off the season and the team spirit with verve. “I’m excited; it’s a good road trip,” Fulton said. “We’ll get some good bonding early on, which is important.” The ‘Roos will play their first home game against the Williams Lake Stampeders. Tha Stampeders may be the team to beat for the ‘Roos this year. “It’ll be an interesting year, because Williams Lake is hosting the Coy Cup, so obviously they’re going to have a strong team,” Kozak said. “And from what I’ve heard they’ve done a great job recruiting, so that’ll make a much tougher division for us.”
Behind the bench
Head Coach – Brian Kozak is returning to head the team Assistant Coaches – Bob Marsh is taking the role again. Steve Williams, who was assistant coach for the ‘Roo’s first year is back behind the bench. ‘Young’ Coach – Nick Patchett will be taking his first role as coach.

ack on their home ice, returning ‘Roos skate against new players and a few making their return from a year away from the team in a tight quarters three-on-three, with goals pulled up to the blue line. With each goal, players shout for a pass from Bob Marsh, who will be an assistant coach once again this year, as the lines change and, for a second, it just looks like chaos on the ice. But to returning coach Brian Kozak, the team is looking good. “The practice is high tempo; the guys are having fun,” he said. A good portion of the players back out on the ice are returning from last year, giving the team a solid foundation to begin with. “We have our nucleus back from last year and a couple of our first year players back as well,” Marsh said. The returning ‘Roos are Alessio Tomassetti and Rigby Burgart, who played for T.R.U. last year and will add an extra dash of skill up front. Together, these players already
have a lot of experience playing together, which has helped the players come together as a team before even playing a game. “As coaches, we look for guys afterward to be sitting in the dressing room chatting, and I’m leaving after half an hour of that and there are guys in the parking lot chatting,” Kozak said. “It’s good that we have that bonding; so I’m really happy with the squad in that sense.” The ‘Roos are also looking at Matt and Mike Stang and Tyrell Turgeon who played on Omineca Ice last year to further shore up the front. With serious skill up front, Kozak is hoping they’ll find a few more players on defence. The team is missing some defencemen from last year due to recurring injuries, so is looking to shore those holes up. The team also lost a goallie over the summer.

Though the team has enough to make it through their games, Kozak said extra goalies can be a boon for practice and drills. With a strong bond returning with the core group from last year and some extra talent finding its way to the team, Justin Fulton, who has played for the ‘Roos for two years

The Clan saw success at home after a rough start to the soccer season. The Clan played their first game at home against the Westside Warriors of Prince George, winning 4-1. Coach Rob McGregor said he’s lost a lot of last year’s players, making this a year of rebuilding for the team. He is happy with the growth he has seen over the course of the first three games. “I’m really pleased because they’re applying the skills we’ve been working on,” he said. The Clan is off to Kamloops this weekend. McGregor hopes to have a another home game lined up for next week against Lake City Secondary.

“Hydro power began flowing into the Cariboo for the first time Sunday, September 8. The new 230,000 volt transmission line built over the past year between Bridge River generating plants and Soda Creek, is undergoing tests this week. The line will operate at 60,000 volts for the first few weeks, supplementing the output of the diesel generating plant here at Quesnel. The additional power will be needed to meet rising energy demands in the area. Initial operation at the lower voltage became necessary when a major transformer for the Soda Creek Substation failed to pass factory acceptance tests and delivery was delayed. When the transformer arrives, the line will be energized at its normal operating voltage of 230,000 volts. The link with hydro generating facilities at Bridge River means a tremendous increase in the amount of power available to the homes and industries in the Cariboo and the communities of Quesnel, Williams Lake and 100 Mile House.”

The power of being a mentor
Study shows societal financial return for program
A
groundbreaking new study by the Boston Consulting Group demonstrates the power of investments in Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring to deliver strong economic value over time. The study was designed to audit the financial return to society from Big Brothers Big Sisters and it found that every dollar invested generates on average $18 in hard dollar returns to society. The research compared the life outcomes of 500 former “Littles” with a control group of individuals from identical family and economic backgrounds. The study determined that over their working lives, the former Little Brothers and Little Sisters will earn on average $315,000 more than those in the control group. These higher incomes will deliver additional tax revenue, higher consumer spending and increased charitable giving and

volunteerism. There is now proof positive that Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs generate enormous financial and societal value. Donors can give with certainty knowing that their hard earned dollars will make profound contribution – not only to young lives, but also to the economy. The former Little Brothers and Little Sisters involved in the study also generally achieved more positive life outcomes in terms of life skills and general well-being than their counterparts who never had the benefit of a volunteer Big Brother or Big Sister. Our agency is in need of more volunteers – Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Community In-School Mentors.

Montreal Guitar Trio (MG3) to perform in Quesnel Oct. 2.

Quesnel Live Arts presents MG3 in Chuck Mobley Theatre Quesnel Live Arts is kicking off their season with an energetic, spectacular Canadian band, Montreal Guitar Trio (MG3), Oct. 2, in Chuck Mobley Theatre, 7:30 p.m. When it comes to bridging diverse genres of music, the MG3 has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with. For more than 13 years, the trio’s virtuosity, rigor, creativity and dynamic stage presence — they are noted for the wit and warmth of their interactions with audiences — have been winning applause around the world. They won the 2011 Opus Prize for concert of the year in the Jazz / World Music category. They have given hundreds of concerts in prestigious venues in North America, Europe, New Zealand and Australia, including the BB King Blues Club in New York, the Rundetårnet in Copenhagen and the legendary Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. After four years crisscrossing the globe, MG3 settled down in Montreal last spring to record their fourth CD, Cambria. The product of a long period of musical introspection and the trio’s most accomplished and personal work yet, this album contains six original tracks and three covers. All the influences which, over the years, have marked the trio are reflected here. Once again, the MG3 sails past the formulaic boundaries that usually limit guitar trios. Tickets are $25/show or $125 for all six shows (adults) and $20/show and $100 for all six shows (seniors and youth). They are available at Quesnel Music, Save-On Foods, KMAX, at the door or in advance by calling 250-747-2207. Reserve seating is available for season ticket holders. ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter The second of three Quesnel Film Club presentations in their fall season, Fruitvale Station, to run Oct. 3, 6:30 p.m. at the Carib Theatre, is the story of the senseless New Year’s Day 2009 police shooting of Oscar Grant, a young black man whose murder sent shockwaves through the US after it was captured on camera by his fellow train passengers. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, writer-director Ryan Coogler’s extraordinary feature opens with the actual phone footage of the incident at Fruitvale Station in Oakland, California. The film then rewinds to recount the final 24 hours of Grant’s life. Grant, played by Michael B. Jordan, is a charismatic youth who is devoted to his mom, adores his daughter and strives to be true to her mother. Newly released from prison, Grant is earnestly trying to put his life back together and do the right thing. Following him through his everyday struggles, Coogler weaves a nuanced story that delicately captures the hopes and frustrations of Grant’s life and the shocking circumstances surrounding his death. Coogler, with his keen sense of the story’s milieu, creates an insightful and achingly realistic portrait of Grant’s life. Fruitvale Station is an immensely powerful drama that puts a human face to tragic headlines. Tickets for Fruitvale Station are $9 (regular) and $7 (seniors) with film membership included in admission. For information call 250-747-7422 or 250-747-3979, join their Facebook page at Quesnel Film Club or visit www.quesnelfilmclub.ca.

If you weren’t getting wet at Fraser River GM’s Silverado Tailgate Party on Sept. 20, then you weren’t where the fun was. Save-On Foods store manager Neil Guardiero was anticipating a very cold dunk as Save-On Foods’ Operations Manager Rory Parr and Garrett Harrison gleefully added ice to the tank. Nine dunkees from various local businesses took the plunge to help raise funds for the Women’s Fall Challenge. Other activities included Cram the Van, a community barbecue by donation as well as contests and give-aways. Tracey Roberts photo

Awesome Spring
A flash of blue did catch my eye, I saw a pretty bluebird fly. I heard a warbling cooing sound, And saw his mate upon the ground. To watch them there is pure delight, I marvel at the awesome sight. We’ll watch the parade as it goes down the street, Its part of a vibrant spring so new, We’ll bring our umbrella in case of heat. As the azure sky so very blue. After the parade we’ll walk to the park, Shades of green the fields become, There’ll be lots of excitement, right up until dark. Violets from the ground have sprung. Geese in V’s across the meadow fly, The next day we’ll go to the rodeo ground, We listen to their honking cry. that’s where the cowboys are known to be found. They are seeking for a place to hatch, The rodeo seems to be on the grow, A home to raise their little batch. All is because of such a great show. The woodpeckers serenade, do echo through the neighbourhood. After the rodeo, the fireworks start, Their rapping becomes a mighty roar, We must go over, we should take a part. on metal, iron or on hardwood. We’ll sit in our lawn chair and look up on high, They hope to them a mate will come, Watch all the fireworks spread through the sky. We so enjoy their constant drum. The humming birds at the feeders eat, We’re worn out and tired and ready for bed, Their flashing colors are hard to beat. With all this excitement, so thinly spread out. They scrap and fight and do not share, When morning arrives, another day starts, Chase each other off without a care. It’s all been worth while, and set deep in our hearts. The calves so young do play and run, Then take a nap in the noonday sun. Elaine Couldwell They are gone with their mothers to summer range, To grow, get fat, and not look the same. The old barn cat has kittens there, Westcoast Wet two calicos and a yellow pair. So spring to you I shout hooray, And welcome you this lovely day. Rain rain rain rain, You chased away the winter snow, When it stops, it starts again. And brought with you a warmer sun, Wet wet wet wet, That helped all pretty things to grow. A condition that you never forget. Your showers being the rainbow bold, Soggy on soggy is saturation, I clearly see your pot of gold. Depending on the amount of precipitation . So thanks to you, we want to say, Water on water sometimes called HO, The earth has wakened in the grandest way, Which is an abbreviation for H2O. From sleepy brown to vibrant green. Everything is new and seems so fresh and clean, R. Ray So to my family, and good friends, Take some time and watch the fair. Natures beauty is beyond compare.
Dress up in your costume and head into town, Sure hope the rain will stop pouring down. There’s a parade, a rodeo and a whole lot of fun, It will be a full day before we are done.
