NEWS BRIEFS Geocaching in A new initiative by Backroads Mapbooks and the B.C. government will encourage geocaching at provincial recreation sites and trails. A total of 20 geocaches have been sponsored at sites across the province, but none will be in the Fort St. James area. There are, however, caches stashed near Fraser Lake and near Crystal Lake and another near Tumbler Ridge, all representing the northern region. Takla Property optioned Manado Gold Corp. has entered an option agreement to acquire a 100 per cent interest in five mineral claims called the Takla Property. The mining claims are located in the Omineca Mining Division and are being optioned by CJL Enterprises Ltd. Part of the agreement will require Manado to spend $250,000 in exploration expenditures over the next four years.

Fort St. James Secondary Students participated in the Terry Fox Run day for schools on Sept. 26. The annual event to raise money for cancer research involved students from all schools in the community at different times throughout the day running or walking “The Loop” to help raise money. Helweg woodlot wins award Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier Joyce and John Helweg of Fort St. James received a regional award for forest stewardship last week. The couple won the award based on their years of managing their own woodlot and the work they have done in education and training for woodlot licensees in the north region. In their application, the Helwegs detailed not only their basic forestry practices, but also their other woodlot-based activities, which include small mill operations and the use of all the wood put through the mill from timbers for homes to using the slabs for firewood to putting the sawdust in the cow birthing yard. Within the woodlot, in addition to the selective logging activities, morel mushrooms were picked, willow was harvested for willow furniture, Christmas trees cut, tours given, duck nesting boxes were put up, hunting has taken place, snowmobiles have utilized the trails, wild berries were harvested, and birch sap has been collected. In addition to the utilization and work going on within the woodlot, the Helwegs have both been very involved in other ways. Joyce Helweg chaired the local woodlot

association meetings and added educational aspects to the meetings. She also assisted the B.C. Woodlot Federation with audits for three years and helped or organized with a number of educational sessions - some for licensees, some for sawmill students of the College of New Caledonia. John Helweg taught milling to others in the community, demonstrating both his band saw mill and Alaskan milling. They have also both continued to educate themselves on different aspects of woodlot management and ecosystem function and management. The couple currently volunteer with Frog Watch, a University of British Columbia research project as well. They report to the researchers on a number of amphibians on their farm and woodlot to help with global warming research. One of the latest projects the couple has been involved with is helping the Scottish Woodlot Association, a newly formed woodlot project just in the early stages. The stewardship award includes $2,500 in funds, which Joyce Helweg said she would like to use to help the couple travel to Scotland to see the work being done there - if her husband agrees, of course.

Drowning in Elliot Lake Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier The body of a 67-year-old fisherman was recovered from Elliot Lake last week. The fisherman had been missing since Sept. 22, when he disappeared from his boat while out fishing by himself. The man had been camping with family, who noticed from shore the man was no longer visible in the boat and went into cell service range to call the RCMP on the Sunday afternoon. Fort St. James Search and Rescue and the RCMP then conducted a search and located the boat, which was floating adrift. They searched for the missing man’s body using underwater cameras and personnel. On Sept. 24 at around 6:15 p.m., the body was found and recovered. Elliot Lake is approximately 150 km north west of Fort St. James off the Leo Creek Forest Service Road. RCMP said there is no criminality involved in the death and the B.C. Coroner Service has taken over the incident.

Campaign continues The Sensible B.C. campaign to decriminalize marijuana possession continues in Fort St. James and across the province. The proposal is for a new law which would disallow the use of police resources to prosecute the possession of small amounts of marijuana by adults. If enough names are collected, a province-wide vote will take place.

They are already working with an application developer and Jenkins was in the Fort to finalize some of the ideas as well as complete research prior to the application being created to see if after it is released there is any change for youth in the community. The app will not actually be strictly a smartphone application, but instead a mobile web site, so it could also easily be accessed from personal computers for those who don’t have smartphones. Three of the 10 youth working with Jenkins presented the idea to council last week and the concept was well-received and Mayor Rob MacDougall said council is willing to help with the program if possible and asked the group to keep council updated on their progress. MacDougall also pointed out the different things the District of Fort St. James is working on to help create more activities for youth, including the downtown ski and Youth in Fort St. James are helping with a study and related initiatives relating to men- snowboard terrain park planned for near the tal health in youth. Youth in Fort St. James came up with a rather creative, yet perhaps obvious idea on how to help better youth mental health in the community. They are going to make an app for it. While the solution will involve input from the entire community, it will offer area youth a one-stop shop for where to find out what is happening, ideas for positive change for youth in the community, and somewhere they can go to find out information on what resources are available for mental health for youth. Events, opportunities and services will be added, which is where the broader community can get involved. The idea has been born by a project which started out with two university students working on a project Researching Adolescent Distress and Resilience (RADAR). The study involved interviewing 27 students in Fort St. James, as well as students in both Vancouver and Abbotsford, to gain a better understanding of young people’s mental health and what helps them to cope. The interviews in Fort St. James took place in September of 2012. A report detailing the findings of the study was presented in the community in May. The findings of the study discovered youth in Fort St. James are dealing with different issues than those in the more urban areas, and the top causes of stress in Fort youth were issues of substance abuse, racism and bullying (which was cited as often being related to racism as well). After this, researcher Emily Jenkins has begun a new aspect of her work in youth mental health to actually do something about the findings. Jenkins has been continuing to work with youth on possible solutions to improve things for youth in terms of mental health, and began by hiring 10 students of Fort St. James Secondary School to work with her. She interviewed 25 youth for the positions, and tried to get a cross section of youth in the community to work with. The 10 youth were then given iPads and have been paid to attend weekly videoconferences with

September 2013 – Mount Milligan has achieved a significant milestone with the shipment of the first concentrate from the processing plant. The new mine is in a phased started up. Full commercial production is on schedule for the fourth quarter of this year. “The first truckload of copper-gold concentrate to leave site is a momentous occasion for all of us,” says Scott Shellhaas, president and chief operating officer, Thompson Creek Metals. “This accomplishment is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees, contractors and suppliers. We are off to a great start and look forward to the continuous ramp-up and optimization of the operation.” Approximately 500 tonnes of saleable concentrate has been made since the mine began production in August. Copper makes up about 25 per cent of the concentrate.

Each tonne of concentrate also includes approximately 30 grams per tonne gold. During the phased start-up of the processing plant, the throughput rate is 1,500 to 2,000 tonnes per hour. Once the second ball mill and its related infrastructure begin operation later this fall, the plant will begin running at full capacity. The full production design throughput rate for the mill is 2,750 tonnes per hour or about 60,000 tonnes per day. Dennis Hoof, Mount Milligan vice president and general manager said that shipping the first concentrate marks a critical milestone for Mount Milligan operation. “All employees and contractors should be extremely proud of this accomplishment. This could not have been achieved without the hard work, dedication and cooperation of all stakeholders.” Concentrate produced at

Mount Milligan travels by truck to a load out facility in Mackenzie. From here the concentrate will be loaded to rail cars and shipped to Vancouver for transport to a final processing facility overseas. Mount Milligan is an open pit copper gold mine located between Fort St James and Mackenzie, Mount Milligan. It is a conventional, truck shovel, open pit mine designed to produce an average of 81 million pounds of copper and 194,500 ounces of gold annually over a projected 22-year life. Production of copper-gold concentrate at Mount Milligan began in September 2013. The mine employs 400 people, with more than 75 per cent of the workforce coming from the local region. SPORTS Ironmen of Fort St. James Courier

Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier Two men from Fort St. James completed the Whistler Ironman Triathlon on August 25. Sam Grill, born and raised in the Fort, but now living in the Lower Mainland, and Andrew Tait, who works in Fort St. James for the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Management. Both men completed the epic event which requires athletes to complete a 3.8 km swim, then a 180 km bicycle ride followed by a 42.2 km run. It was Sam Grill’s first ever Ironman race, and he was what you might call an unlikely Ironman, given his reasons for doing one. Grill had never really thought about attempting an Ironman before, not being an athlete who really enjoyed biking, running or swimming particularly. “It was really the idea of the challenge,” he said, explaining how he came to sign up for one. In the end, Grill “kind of signed up on a whim” he said, and was just one of a group of four guys who decided to attempt the Whistler race. But while he may not have signed up with focussed intentions of becoming a Lycrawearing Ironman champion, he did not shirk on his training. He put in serious time, beginning light training in November of the previous year, then heavier training in January to build up to the heavy 20-week intense training leading up to the race. While his body type may not be ideal for triathlons, Grill had done one olympic-length triathlon before the Ironman and then did a half Ironman in July to help prepare for the Whistler event. “I’m kind of a bigger guy, not really built for endurance sports,” said Grill. Going into the race, Grill had a goal of doing the event in under 12 and a half hours, which he surpassed handily, taking 12 hours, nine minutes and eight seconds. While he was just over his goal time on the run portion of four and a half hours, he did accomplish his main goal of running the entire marathon. Going into the race, Grill said he was not feeling good about his preparation, and had begun to feel weak from tapering off his training. “To be honest … I was kind of down,” he said. But the day of the race, after he arrived, the energy of the volunteers and the spectators took effect as he got going. “During the race I was kind of euphoric,” said Grill. “People were so amazing.”

Instead, he’ll use the time he had dedicated to training to get back to the sports he loves: team sports and especially skiing. Andrew Tait, however, you may see sign up for another Ironman, as Whistler was Tait’s second Ironman event, having completed his first one in Penticton in 2011. “I’ve always wanted to do one,” said Tait. “In 2011 I turned 40 and I decided I’d do it for my 40th.” But having a hamstring injury during the 2011 one and becoming sick with a fever not long before

the event, Tait was disappointed with his time of 12 hours and 19 minutes in 2011. Not having had the race he wanted, Tait wanted to go back and try again, which he did this year at Whistler. His goal was to finish in under 12 hours, and he began training just after Christmas last year to get there. Training for Tait had the added challenge of northern winter thrown in, limiting his ability to train for swimming and biking. The swimming training began in April, in a full wetsuit,

complete with hoody, gloves and booties. “You give it a couple of weeks to warm it up a bit,” he said. The bike training was indoors for most of the winter, on a stationary trainer, limiting his practice on hills. He must have trained well though, because he completed the Whistler event in 11 hours and 47 minutes and 44 seconds, an impressive time. During the race, Tait said he felt good, though the swim was his least favourite part.

He described the highs and lows a competitor goes through during the long race as your body goes through cycles of wanting to quit and getting yet another wind to carry on through. At points, he described “feeling like you’re going to die in the baking sun” and the bike ride especially had some challenges. “It’s so hard and people are dieing on hills,” he said. “That’s all part of it.” But his friends had put signs up along the way to cheer him on, which helped buoy his spirits. With beautiful weather, a fantastic location and amazing volunteers from all over the world coming to help make the event happen for the 3,000 participants, Grill said how impressed he was by the event itself. “(The volunteers) were just so unbelievable,” he said. “It’s pretty cool.” The finish was the best part of the race for Grill, a surprise he said. “You come around this corner and you can hear the crowd,” he said. “It’s way better than I thought it would be.” After such an amaz-

The money was worth it. Councillor Joan Burndeniuk said she had reservations going down to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention, but those were laid to rest. “I was very pleased with the effectiveness of meeting with the ministers one on one,” she said. Burdeniuk, fellow councillors Russ Gingrich and Dave Birdi, Mayor Rob MacDougall and Chief Administrative Officer Kevin Crook all attended the convention in Vancouver from September 16-21. While Burdeniuk said she was not sure at first about also attending when so many from the District of Fort St. James had planned to go, she found the handson approach and direct interaction with ministers productive. She said she even asked an experienced MLA what he thought about so many of them coming to the convention, and he told her it sends a clear message of the District’s priorities. The group from Fort St. James met with a half dozen ministers and put forward issues important to the community, from concerns with regards to the new medical clinic society such as finalizing the new location for the clinic to seniors’ issues including housing needs in the community. Gingrich said he was “optimistic we contacted the right ministries.” They said as many as six ministers have committed to coming to Fort St. James in the next year in person. MacDougall said Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk has challenged the community to come up with $2 million and Virk will help build a new trades facility for the local College of New Caledonia.

School District 91 update

Superintendent of Schools, Charlene Seguin, reported that the school year was kicked off with a two-day professional-development event attended by approximately 115 staff from across the district. Each school in the district had teams that worked with Austin Buffum to explore how to develop systematic school-wide responses to further deepen student learning. Seguin indicated that the overall response could be summed up by one teacher who responded that the “message aligns perfectly with where we are going as professionals” and by the comment of another teacher who indicated this was the most valuable workshop they had attended in many years. Seguin thanked Rick Pooley, assistant superintendent of schools for his efforts in putting this event together. The new school year also brought administrative changes to several schools in the district. Seguin reported the district has eight principals and vice principals in new positions this year. She went on to say “our schools are in good hands; we are very pleased.” Manu Madhok, director of instruction, thanked Ray LeMoigne and the School District No. 91 Business Company for planning and carrying out two summer camps. This summer 20 students from China visited the district and enjoyed exciting activities. Madhok also reported the district is monitoring the enrolment numbers in each school. While most schools are on track to meet their

projections, we have noticed increased numbers in a few schools and this has allowed the district to hire more teachers than earlier anticipated, he said.

Continued from Page 6 The two-lap swim in Alta Lake was very crowded, with “lots of banging and crashing going on,” he said and he “came out of the water a little frustrated.” “Some people relate it to going through the washing machine,” said Tait. Coming out of the water onto the bike improved things, however, and he described the climb on the bike as being his favourite part of the course, the sun still low on the horizon. “It was nice and cool still,” he said. The rest of the course went well for Tait, and he described the bike course as good because it was such a challenge, with lots of climbing and descent. “It made it interesting,” he said. Tait had his two nine-year-old twins, his wife and his parents there to cheer him on and other friends and family followed along online. While Tait enjoyed the event and said he would like to do another, he won’t want to dedicate the time to one for a bit, but maybe in a couple years.

Courier Mt. Milligan creates concentrate

After the first processing began earlier this month, Mt. Milligan has begun to stockpile concentrate. As the processing runs through the start-up phase, concentrate is being produced, but not yet at full production rates. So far, the mine reports producing around 500 tonnes of concentrate, 25 per cent of which is estimated copper and 30 grams per tonne is gold.

So far, the mill can process 1,5002,000 tonnes per hour of ore, which will increase as the second ball mill comes on line for full production to 2,750 tonnes per hour. The concentrate is currently being stockpiled on site and will be until transportation begins to the refinery later this year. The mine expects to be in full commercial production in the fourth quarter.

The training is aimed at helping Northern Health hire from a pool of qualified office assistants. The local campus was one of two northern schools funded in the announcement. Fort Nelson also received funding for 10 spots. The other six schools throughout southern parts of B.C. will be receiving funding for between 10 and 96 spots.

Blangy was fined $1,000 and prohibited from driving for one year for operating a motor vehicle while impaired. Lazarre was given seven days in jail for failing to comply with a probation order, seven days in jail for failure to comply with a condition of an undertaking or recognizance. Lazarre was also given 17 days in jail and nine months probation with conditions for uttering threats to burn, destroy or damage real person or property. Scott C. Loomer was fined $750 and charged a victim surcharge of $112.50 for failure to comply with an appearance notice or promise to appear.

Fort St. James wins business award at UBCM Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier Fort St. James is officially open for business. After being selected as one of the 15 finalists out of 39 communities which applied for the award, Fort St. James was awarded an Open for Business Award at the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) convention. Seven communities in the province won the award, which includes $10,000 in award money. Mayor Rob MacDougall accepted the award on behalf of the community while at the convention and said it was a highlight of the convention for him.
