School board will go online to engage public This fall School District 72 will be consulting with the community to develop the district’s second Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan serves as the district’s roadmap to providing

the best educational experience for students. It is used to focus the Board of Education’s decision making and pull schools and district staff together around a single game plan.

“We are committed to reaching out to parents and our community to gather ideas that will expand opportunities for our students. Our last Strategic Plan set a positive direction for the

district and the development of this second plan will only continue to further refine our educational focus,” says Board Chair Michele Babchuk. A unique feature of the consultation process

will be the use of online public engagement software, ThoughtStream, to provide parents, staff and students the opportunity to share ideas and suggestions with the Board of Education.

million in its contingency reserve. This represents just two per cent of the district’s annual operating budget and approximately one week of operating expenses. Babchuk said the contingency is a necessity because sometimes the district is waiting for funds from the province and still needs to pay its bills and employees. On the subject of financial management, Babchuk said a big job this coming school year will be the facilities review. The district will take a careful look at the condition of all its buildings and also consider the changing demographics of the city to determine the future needs of education and related services. “I think it’s timely,” she said.

Later in October, the district will host a learning forum with invited community representatives to gather information about community conditions and to better understand the community’s educational goals and needs. Students will also be given the opportunity to provide their input through ThoughtStream at a series of student meetings with representatives from each school level. “Combining face-toface meetings with an online engagement process, allows us to give all interested individuals an opportunity to meaningfully contribute to this conversation about the future of education in our district,” says Superintendent Tom Longridge. “This next Strategic Plan will guide the district for the next five years.” Strategic planning is used to help an organization do a better job – to focus its energy, ensure that members of the organization are working toward the same goals, and to assess and adjust the organization’s direction in response to its environment. Director Brenda Leigh has agreed to move forward with increasing water rates for Area D after holding out for a better rate. Strathcona Regional District staff said rates need to go up 21 per cent over 2012 rates in order to meet the regional district’s 2013 budget projection of $351,721 in user rate revenues. At last Thursday board meeting, Leigh said she would support the move in order to ensure her constituents are not hit with a deficit come December 31 – the last day water bills can be paid without incurring interest charges. “At the moment I’m in favour of this…to protect my people from a potential deficit,” Leigh said. “I’m hoping that we’ll end up with a surplus.” The regional district has been negotiating with Area D’s water supplier, the city of Campbell River, for almost two years on a new contract. The city, which supplies bulk water to the northern portion of Area D (Crawford

Road area), upped its rate from $0.40 per cubic metre to $0.80 per cubic metre once the water supply agreement expired in May 2012. The new rate was effective as of January 1, 2013 but Leigh has been fighting for a better rate; at a board meeting in July, Leigh convinced the board to hold off on making a decision until after August 1. “It’s quite an unfair situation and we’re trying to get it fair,” Leigh said. “The rate in 2012 was $232 per household, in 2013 the rate is up to $260, which is a $28 increase on the inch, not including the rates paid through taxes which is 100 per cent more. Area D is presented with a 121 per cent increase, which we’re trying to negotiate downward.” Leigh has reached out to B.C. Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Coralee Oakes for help and said she is “very supportive” of a fair solution. The city maintains that its water rate is fair and the increase will bring Area D customers in line with the city’s fee structure for all water users outside city boundaries. The city’s rates are

established based on the funding required to cover the annual operating and maintenance costs for the water system, as well as upgrading and replacing the various components of the water system such as pipes, pumps, treatment facilities, and reservoirs, as the water system ages. Forests, fibre and solid partnerships will provide for an excellent future, says Klahoose Chief James Delorme. The elected leader of the Cortes Island-based First Nation was still in a celebratory mood Monday following Friday’s announcement of a new community forest tenure for the island by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources. “The prospects are good…it’s a resource we have to manage properly because it provides for the future of our people and the people of this community,” said Chief Delorme. The Cortes Forestry General Partnership, a collaboration between the community and the Klahoose, is now responsible for more than 3,700 hectares of Crown land in various forests around the island. In addition to the economic opportunities, it gives Cortes Islanders the ability to manage some local forestry. Last November, islanders protested and blocked road access to forest land owned by Island Timberlands due to concerns of over-logging and longterm damage to sensitive ecosystems. Now, the community

forest group has the chance to develop and demonstrate sustainable logging practices. “We now have the great opportunity and the challenge of developing a Community Forest Operating Plan that will reflect the expectations of the broader island community,” said Bruce Ellingsen, a community forest advocate. “I trust it will create millennial benefits for the island, and beyond, and will mirror the success of the traditional First Nations’ approach to managing resources within their territory.”

David and Goliath The Klahoose already operate a community forest licence in the traditional territory it holds in the Toba Valley on the mainland. How the band acquired the tenure is a modernday David and Goliath story. In 1988, the band of about 300 people put a stop to private, clearcut logging in the Toba Inlet, by blocking off the access road through Klahoose territory leading to the log dump. The standoff continued for two decades until Hayes Forest Service, on the verge of bankruptcy, intended to “sell” back Tree Farm Licence 10,

but still retain the logging rights. The company was working on the deal along with the Ministry of Forests office in Powell River when the Klahoose stepped in. They took their case to B.C. Supreme Court where Justice Christopher Grauer ruled the district forestry manager in Powell River failed to properly consult with the band. The standoff finally ended in 2009 when the province gave the Klahoose $2.1 million towards the $3.75 million purchase price of the licence. In return, the

A brand-new 80-stall parking lot and new access point to Elk Falls should be open around the end of October. The trail and parking area are part of site preparation works necessary for BC Hydro’s nearly $1 billion rebuild of the John Hart Generating Station. During construction, the existing road to Elk Falls will be closed and the public will instead use the new parking lot created off Woodstave Road. “Brewster Lake Road across the John Hart Dam will be closed for up to three years and it may be all at once or in various durations that add up to no more than three years,” said Stephen Watson, spokesperson for BC Hydro. “The public access into Elk Falls then needs to be moved and, in collaboration with BC Parks and in discussion with Rotary, the new access road, 80-spot parking lot and trail into

the park will become the permanent entry once the John Hart project is finished.” The parking lot will feature a new interpretive centre, free of charge, that will remain in place until 2018. “It will have wall panels and an interactive touch screen to illustrate the past, present and future of the John Hart facilities, as well as the people side of the story,” Watson said. “The facility may open around the end of October and is tentatively planned to be open two days a week.” Watson said BC Hydro is offering to donate the 14x40-foot building to museum around the end of 2018. With that in mind, the facility will be painted to match the look of the museum. The John Hart project is also benefitting the community in other ways. The new parking lot and trail will make the Rotary Club’s proposed suspension bridge over Elk Falls canyon possible. “There is very limited

parking at Elk Falls and the available existing parking issue was a barrier to the bridge hap-

pening,” Watson said. “Now that they have 80 parking spots – much higher than exists now –

it is enough to handle the public trips to see it. The parking lot has a number of RV parking spots and

demolition waste fees rose from $90 per metric tonne to $100 per metric tonne this year. That increase was to offset operational costs at not only the Campbell River and Cumberland waste management centres, but also the Tahsis and Zeballos landfills, the Gold River transfer station and landfill as well as the Cortes and Hornby Island transfer stations.

The increase will go towards capital projects such as gas collection, leachate collection, storm water facilities and for closure plans for existing dumps, including Campbell River’s. A transfer station is currently handling waste at the landfill, which is nearly full. The closure process is expected to take at least five years. The landfill could, however, be expanded

down the road to the northeast which would allow for 40-50 more years of use. Todd Baker, an engineer with consulting group AECOM which worked on the region’s solid waste plan, told city council last year that if the facility were to expand it would require upgrades to be in compliance with Ministry of Environment’s criteria. Improvements would

have to include an engineered system for leachate treatment, landfill gas management and a membrane that would cover the landfill to ensure no air or water escapes from the site. The tipping fee increase is also being targeted as “diversion incentives to help preserve landfill capacity for the future and are consistent with the solid waste management plan.”

For the second straight year, dumping fees at the Campbell River landfill are going up. Effective Jan. 1, 2014 tipping fees at the dump will increase by $10 per metric tonne in order to help pay for capital improvements taken on by the Comox Strathcona Waste Management Service as well as long-term care costs of all the waste centres within the region. Tom Boatman, the manager of solid waste services, said the fees were approved by the solid waste board in June. “The board approved an increase for municipal solid waste from $90 per metric tonne to $100 per metric tonne and construction and demolition waste from $100 per metric tonne to $110 per metric tonne,” Boatman said. “Area residents dropping off loads weighing not more than 60 kilograms will still be charged the $4 minimum.” The rate hike builds on top of a similar tipping fee increase this year from $80 per metric tonne in 2012 to $90 per metric tonne in 2013. two bus parking spots.” Hydro has also offered the Rotary a key piece of the puzzle the club needs to get started on the project. The utility recently provided Rotary with geotechnical informa-

tion from Hydro’s investigative reviews which will provide the bridge’s designer with the necessary insight as to what the rock is like for anchoring the bridge on either end of the canyon. Construction on the John Hart project could start by the end of the year. BC Hydro recently received technical and financial bids from competing teams which it is currently reviewing. The preferred general contractor is expected to be announced later this fall and Hydro hopes to sign the contract by the end of the year to begin construction mobilization. Longer municipal terms warranted

Extending a term by another year will give residents better bang for their tax buck, reduce election costs and council turnover, and put municipalities in sync with provincial elections. This timing would aid in limiting the costs some municipalities have had to accrue once a current mayor or councillor wins a provincial election, which, obviously, triggers costly byelections, such as the one about to happen in Coquitlam to the tune of

around $140,000. The proposal passed with a 60 per cent approval rate, with one rural delegate stating the idea came from “professional politicians” in the Lower Mainland, where pay is higher.While that may be true, it doesn’t change the fact that this is an idea whose time may have come and it should be pushed forwarded as soon as possible. And it’s not as though there isn’t precedent for this in Canada. If such a plan is enacted, B.C. would fall in step with every other province except for the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Overall, we would be better served by having longer terms, both in terms of effectiveness of politicians and money saved by having fewer elections. – Black Press

Parks are for kids

I was compelled to reply to the letter in the Campbell River Mirror Sept. 27, 2013. There is no one who would not want the park kept in tip top shape, the upgrade is and has never been the issue here. Play equipment for children is. On one hand Shayla Adams identifies herself as a “parent” and that this upgrade is just what the park needs. She furthers states that this upgrade would be a draw for “tourists.” She does not explain to me how this upgrade will help her “parent.” Does her child play there regularly? Does that child think the design is a good one? Do rocks and gravel bring out the fun in her child? On the other hand a mother identified only by initials RW, also identifies herself as a “parent., that this upgrade has had a devastating effect on her five-year-old child, with her bursting into tears for the loss of her beloved play equipment. Where is she to take her child to play now? As a member of this neighbourhood for the past 35 years, I have seen many upgrades at the park, but the concept that parks are for kids seems to be lost on the town. This park has always been heavily used by all members of this community, so you are correct Shayla in that it is not “just a Continued on Pg. 9

Universal healthcare is America’s new red scare

Some of our neighbours to the south did everything they could this week to prevent the great republic from being tainted by universal health care. They forced the closure of parts of the American government, starting with the operation of the national parks. Ha, ha. “America’s greatest idea” will pay the price for those who would tarnish the braintrust of freedom with socialist notions from the north. Extend medical benefits to everybody! Indeed. From my cold, dead fingers. If you can’t afford medical benefits, then... well...die. What is it about universal health care that scares politically conservative Americans? Is it such a bad thing? I mean we’re not talking about allowing, well, I don’t even want to say what unsa-

vory behaviours we could draw disturbing comparisons with. As I understand it...actually, I don’t understand it but if I follow the “logic,” the issue goes something like this. Conservative Republicans – as opposed to, like, regular Republicans, I guess – want to stop President Barrack Obama from introducing a medicare bill so badly, that they’ll hold the operation of the U.S. government for ransom. Drop the healthcare provisions of the budget or the Republicans will shut down major portions of the federal government by refusing to pass the budget bill. Only in America. The Republicans have agreed (amongst themselves) to a plan that would fund government operations in return for delaying the healthcare provisions for

a year. The president doesn’t want to do this because health care reform is a major component of his legislative plan, a plan which the election campaign was partly fought on. You know, the election that the Republicans lost. It’s not just in Campbell River where the losers of an election think they still have the right to dictate how the city should be run. So, the Republicans are willing to shut down non-essential services (like national parks because, you know, some people think national parks aren’t essential) in order to prevent healthcare reform. Okay, I get it that universal health care is expensive. But whenever you discuss government spending in the U.S., you can always fall back on that dependable old saw, “If the U.S. government just

gave health care (or insert any program) a portion of the money it spends on the military...” It’s not the sustainability debate that puzzles me, it’s the vehemence with which opponents in the U.S. view health care. It’s the red scare of the 21st Century, which, of course, has been raging since, well, the red scare. It’s an ideological issue. Why do healthcare opponents not want to offer health services to all or most of its citizens who can’t afford it? Why is that such a bad thing? Of course, the fear for Canadians about Republican antics is that our Conservatives start to get funny ideas. Luckily of course, we don’t have to shut down the federal government to get our way, the prime minister just has to prorogue Parliament.

In Sweden, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change finally issued its widely leaked update on human-caused global warming. As expected, it downgraded predictions of temperature rise in the face of 15 years of measurements that show little or no average surface temperature increase. The official spin also went as expected. The revelation that more than a dozen computer prediction models have all more or less agreed, and all have been wrong, was played down. City’s first lady of film joins Emmy-winning producer Campbell River movie-biz guru Joan Miller will be one of the guest speakers at the 7th annual Vancouver Island Economic Summit. Since the early 1990s, Miller has worked tirelessly, mostly behind the scenes, to bring the producers of movies, commercials and other features to the region and, since

Pool playing seniors have lined up a new place to hone their skills. A group from the Campbell River Seniors’ Centre is teaming up with the Eagles Club to shoot some stick. The seniors have been without their pool tables since their centre was relocated from the Campbell River Common mall to their temporary home at Radiant Life Church. But that all changed when the Eagles stepped up to fill the void. “Three seniors have now taken out Eagles memberships,” said Bruno Fornika, the chair of the Seniors Society’s building committee. “This will allow each of them to bring in a maximum of six guests to play pool in

Health workers turn off lights at night Island Health is celebrating the energy saving efforts of its staff across the region who earned the organization a first place ranking in BC Hydro’s Top Ten Power Smart Partners for 2013. Island Health, formerly known as the Vancouver Island Health Authority, saved 520,275 kilowatts (kWh) – enough energy to power nearly 48 households for a year. The savings were achieved from April 1, 2012 to Aug. 31, 2013. “Congratulations to all Island Health staff for

Family Literacy, Family Literacy and Timeless Treasures. For the school year 2012-2013, the association helped 198 learners with the assistance of 106 volunteer tutors. They rely tremendously on community volunteers to assist with learners meeting their literacy goals. All of their programs are learner centered and based on a oneon-one tutoring model, which means they tailor theirprograms to fit the literacy needs of each individual. Learners are paired up with their own volunteer tutor who works one on one with them. There is no cost for any of the programs. “It is important to recognize that knowing how

to read and write impacts our everyday life. Nearly half of all Canadians struggle with some part of Literacy. When some of our learners come to us, they are not able to read such things as bus schedules, street signs or many other things that we take for granted,” says Sherry Bujold, Adult Literacy Program Coordinator. Time to try modern-day treasure hunting Geocaching, the equivalent of modern-day treasure hunting, is a great activity for adults and families – and people are doing it all over the world, at night and even in a marine environment. If you’d like to try geocaching, join Clinton Crook for an intro-

ductory session on using basic GPS and then head outdoors to discover the fun of logging your first cache. The session takes place at the Sportsplex on Saturday, October 5 from 9 a.m. ‘til noon. Cost is $20, and the program is open to

The BCCA will send out volunteers to pick fruit that you don’t intend to harvest (or you can bring it in yourself on Oct. 5) and we will process and juice the fruit which we can then sell as a fundraiser. Of course, all of this is

made possible thanks to Pressing Matter, who have donated their time to make and box juice for non-profit organizations. Pre-registration is required for this event. Linda Tillery Cultural Heritage Choir a rhythmic and vocal treat

he Linda Tillery Cultural Heritage Choir, a Grammy-nominated, percussion-driven vocal ensemble from Berkeley, California will be ...shakin’ a tail feather... at the Quadra Community Centre, Saturday, Nov. 16, at 8 p.m. This dynamic, fivepart a cappella group shares their traditions of African American music rooted in the Deep South and strongly connected to their West African and Caribbean origins. Creating exciting rhythms and audience-engaging energy through stick, song, dance and story, the CHC will transport you to a place in time when the roots of American popular music were just beginning to grow through the music of the “involuntary immigrants” from the western regions of Africa. Musical director and cultural historian, Linda Tillery is a verteran vocalist, percussionist and Grammy-nominated producer whose career has spanned 43 years. Her powerful, shimmering alto voice has been showcased in many popular bands and venues around the Bay Area of California. Beginning her musical training at an early age listening to jazz, pop, R & B, rock and roll, latin jazz and European classical music, she started her musical career as a classical bassist, evolving through rock ‘n roll and soul performance. She has shared the stage with such musical giants as Bobbie McFerrin,

The Tidemark Theatre begins its second season of the “Tidemark Lounge” tomorrow. The “Tidemark Lounge” showcases local and emerging artists, and runs select Thursdays in the fall from 7-9 p.m. Last year the Tidemark Theatre Society began presenting artists in the lobby, and the series was so popular, the local non-profit decided to bring the series back for another year. Admission to the Tidemark Lounge is a suggested $10 donation at the door, and a 100 per cent of the proceeds collected at the door go back to the artist. The Tidemark Theatre has donated the space and staffing costs for this event. This week the Tidemark Lounge will feature Vancouver’s Reid Jamieson, who shines his light with an incredible voice, therapeutic lyrics, and a magical way with melodies. Margaret Tuddenham passed away peacefully with her family at her side at Sunshine Manor in Campbell River on September 17th 2013. Margaret was predeceased by her loving husband Stanley and daughter Teresa who were the center of her life, her parents Robert and Margaret Yeatman, sister Lorraine Idiens and brothers-in-law Ted Idiens and Art Wickman. She is survived by her sister Doreen Wickman, nieces Bonnie Fair (Norman) and Corinne Mergaert, nephews Glenn Mills (Mandy) and Richard Idiens, son-in-law Jim Paterson and numerous great nieces and nephews. Margaret was born in Campbell River on April 17th 1929 to Robert and Margaret Yeatman. She was the grand-daughter of Fred and Emma Yeatman who arrived and settled on Quadra Island in the late 1800's. The family is recognized as one of the first pioneering families of the area. As newlyweds Margaret and Stan moved to Alberta always knowing they would one day return to retire on Vancouver Island. Many happy retirement years were spent on their farm in Saanichton where they both were actively involved on their daugher Teresa's veterinary practice. The family wishes to thank Lee and her devoted staff at Sunshine Manor, Margaret's home for the last four years, for their love and care, Dr. DeBruin for his kindness and support and great-niece Tanza for always being there when Auntie Margie needed her. "She will remain forever in our hearts"

Dear Mother of Sandra Vanos (Ken) of Forest, Ontario, and Stephen St-Pierre (Melody) of Victoria, B.C. Beloved Grandma BC of Katie (Brad), Jenni, and Danielle; all of Ontario. Grandmother of Steven (Megan), Nicholas (Jenn), Mitchell (Vicki) and Taylor. Cherished GreatGrandmother of Kyla, Elizabeth, Ava, Emma, Olivia and Keira. Joan Frances Cochrane (nee Dale) June 22, 1923Sept 26, 2013 Our mother Joan Cochrane died peacefully with her family by her side on September 26, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband Jack Cochrane in 1999 and her brother Ron in 1989. She leaves to mourn her children Jean (Jim) and Don (Joanne), her beloved grandchildren Stephanie, Andrea (Alex), Rory, Charlie and Andy, her brother Jack (Jean), and cousins Barbara, Jack, Grit, Betty and John. Joan was born in New Westminster to Harry and Violet Dale in 1923 and grew up on a farm in Hatzic Prairie. She taught in a one room school house there before moving to Ocean Falls where she met and married Jack; they moved to Campbell River in 1958. Joan was a kind and warm hearted person with a delightful smile. She loved children and taught in a daycare for many years. Joan also loved her friends in Beta Sigma Phi. She enjoyed painting and became very proficient. Later she was very happy attending the Adult Care Centre. We are grateful for the compassionate care provided by James Bay Care Center in Victoria over the past few years. A memorial service will be held on October 3 at 2pm at St. Peters Anglican Church, 228 S Dogwood St. in Campbell River. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Campbell River and District Adult Care Society would be very much appreciated.

Fall Classic played in classic fall weather The Tyees hosted the Fall Classic this past weekend amid the strong wind and constant rain. Eight teams from both the Island and the Lower Mainland were involved and the Tyees showed little mercy to the mainland visitors on day one. A rebuilding Pemberton side were the first opponents and the Tyees were able to enjoy a very comfortable victory. Midfielder Alex Foge picked up a first half hat trick and the Carihi bench were able to enjoy the vast majority of playing time. The second game of the day saw a much sterner challenge against Credo Christian School. They had been involved in an excellent, competitive game earlier in the day which they lost 2-1 to the always strong Glenlyon Norfolk School. The Tyees started off well and controlled the early play and seemed to get to the majority of challenges first. Carihi took a deserved lead after 14 minutes. Kevin Shelswell put in a corner which was barely cleared to the top of the 18

yard line. The ball came toward Taylor Arbour who was able to adjust his feet quickly to allow a shot which was fired into the top corner of the net. Despite dominating possession, the Tyees were unable to add to their score by half time. The first half pattern continued in the second with Carihi defence of Anderson, Anthony Vigneron, Carter Cobelenz and Tyler Kelly standing strong. Carihi added two more goals from Dylan Sparling and Jason Fawkes to secure a well earned 3-0 win and a place in the semi finals the following morning against Glenlyon Norfolk School. Conditions on Saturday morning had deteriorated with strong winds playing havoc on the teams. The Tyees won the toss and played with the wind behind their backs. They made a dream start to the semifinal with a goal within the first three minutes. Fluent passing resulted in Shelswell getting the ball outside the 18 yard box. paugh whose calm finish beats the keeper. The first half was a story of missed chances. It would be fair to say Carihi could have scored six more goals but for a lack of cutting edge and a couple of fine keeper saves. The second half saw a strong reaction from Glenlyon Norfolk. They had much more

It was a wet and blustery day for the U12 Rage Lacrosse teams first games of the season on Sunday. Victoria’s Titans tier 1 Lacrosse team came out victorious in both games. The U14’s played Nanaimo’s Raiders Tier two Lacrosse teams and won both of their games. Rage will travel to Victoria for games this weekend.

Further excellent attacking play from Carihi sees Declan Arnold get on the scoresheet for a 4-2 scoreline. Once again Glenlyon respond with a second penalty shot after a player was fouled in the 18 yard box. This end-toend entertaining game was to end 4-3 for Carihi. The cup final matched North Island rivals Carihi and Kwalikum High School. Both teams are to be commended for the quality and spirit of their play in somewhat atrocious weather. This time

it was Kwalikum who were to enjoy a dream start. Weak communication in the Tyee defence saw a Kwalikum forward drive right through and score inside the opening minute. The game was well balanced for the next 10 minutes but Carihi were able to draw level after 16 minutes. Krutzieger put Carihi 2-1 ahead with a poachers’-style goal after 23 minutes. The second half was again a farly even affair. Tillapaugh added a third goal for Carihi and Kwalikum scored a late second to make it an interesting last few minutes. However, Carihi were able to hold on and win the cup. Carihi play Brooks of Powell River this Wednesday in league play. Highland league game Carihi continued their encouraging start to the season with five straight

wins this past week in league and Tournament play. In their second league game they travelled to Comox to play the always competitive Highland Boys. In glorious sunshine, the Tyees got off to a dream start. Alex Foge knocked a diagonal ball into James Krutzieger who then whips the ball into the 18 yard box right onto the foot of Zach Tillipaugh. Tillipaugh hits it first time straight into the back of the net. The Tyees enjoyed all the possession for the next 15 minutes but a lack focus at the back resulted in a tying goal for the home team. After 32 minutes, a scramble in the Highland 18 yard box saw Carihi hit the cross bar twice in a matter of seconds. Eventually, the ball found the net as Krutzieger connected with the rebound from the cross bar with a fine low strike. Foge extended the lead to 3:1 and a fourth came after Kevin Shelswell was unceremoniously brought down in the penalty area after an excellent run forward. Aiden Anderson scored the resulting penalty kick. Highland made it 4-2 shortly into the second half. Carihi’s fifth goal came after Shelswell’s unselfish pass was finished emphatically by Foge. Once again Highland refused to give up and they scored their third goal with a superb free kick. A delightful solo effort from Karson Kroetch saw the final goal of the game. Kroetch danced past two Highland defenders and the keeper to add some insurance to Carihi’s lead. Final score was 6-3 for Carihi.
