There will be a mayoral race in Rimbey this year and six candidates will vie to fill four councillor positions. Rick Pankiw will go up against incumbent Sheldon Ibbotson for the mayor’s chair. Pankiw ran for mayor in the last election against Ibbotson and incumbent Dale Barr, garnering 348 votes. Ibbotson won the election with 631 votes and Dale Barr trailed with 223. “I believe I can make a difference and together with the everybody’s input can put together a vision that will benefit everyone involved.” Matt Jaycox, a Rimbey businessman who works out of his home office for Telus, has thrown his name into the hat for council. “My primary purpose is to serve the community and if possible to heal the division we have here. I have no axe to grind.” Einer Olsen, a journeyman carpenter and longtime resident of Rimbey, is also letting his name stand. “I think we need a change and I feel I can bring some new energy to council.” Dave Karroll, who has several years experience as a councillor has announced his intentions to run. For several months Karroll has publicly expressed his growing dissatisfaction with the present council and stated there is a need for change. Karroll, Olsen and Jaycox will run against incumbents Jack Webb, Paul Payson and Gayle Rondeel. Rimbey residents may vote in the municipal election Oct. 21 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the Rimbey Community Centre. Advance polls will be held on Wed., Oct. 9 in the Kinsmen Room at the community centre and on Sat., Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Parkland Manor/Seniors Lodge. Pankiw to run for mayor By Treena Mielke Rick Pankiw has a vision for Rimbey and he wants to be the man to implement change. Pankiw is running for mayor, throwing his hat into the political ring along with incumbent Sheldon Ibbotson. “I think we need a fresh start with a vision towards our future,” he said. The retired businessman said he has time and Rick Pankiw energy to devote to the position and, if elected, he plans to listen to the voice of the people and follow their direction. “If elected it would be a priority for me to sit down with council and our CAO to talk about longterm and short-term goals as dictated by the wants
and needs of the people. Listening to the people is so important. They are the ones we want to keep here.” Chatting with people while on the campaign trail, Pankiw said the townspeople appear to be concerned about infrastructure, taxes and the empty buildings in the downtown core. As mayor, Pankiw would consult with the library board and the community and work with council to come up with an acceptable solution for the space dilemma at the Rimbey library. If elected, Pankiw would work closely with council and administration to ensure the maximum grants were received for roads and infrastructure. Confidence needs to be restored in the business community and Pankiw would ensure such a plan was put into place by working with council, the chamber of commerce, the Central Alberta Economic Partnership and the business owners themselves. Pankiw will make one promise while running for the mayor’s chair. “I won’t make any promises I can’t keep,” he said. “I do, however, promise to work with council, the citizens of Rimbey and our governments to help our town and surrounding community grow, prosper and be a town we are all proud to call home.” Pankiw and wife Sue has lived in Rimbey since 1993. He has owned businesses in town including Co-operators Insurance, Striker’s Alley and Juice Junkeez. He has volunteered on several boards and committees and is on the board at his church. He and his wife has three children, Colton, Logan and Taylor. Matt Jaycox
Jaycox runs for town council By Treena Mielke A 55-year-old Rimbey businessman who wants to help mend what he believes to be a serious rift in the community has stepped forward to let his name stand as a candidate for town council. In the two years Matt Jaycox has lived in the community, the design engineer for Telus has felt there is dissention and discord among the townspeople on several political issues. “I feel that sense of division and it bothers me.” Jaycox loves the town and wants to have a part in helping it become a close-knit community again. “I don’t have an axe to grind. I simply want to help where I can. I’m a servant at heart but I’m not a follower; not a yes man. I am an independent thinker. I’m not on anybody’s side and I’m very careful what I put my support behind.” Continued on Page 22

It is nice and central where it is.” Olsen wants to see the town move forward as a united close-knit community. “I would like to get rid of the division which seems to exist,’ he said. The race is on! All over Alberta candidates, like so many toy soldiers, are hosting up their signs and slogans, ready to do battle. “Vote for me,” they chant. “Vote for me, vote for me, vote for me, please.” And on it goes. Treena Mielke Being Joe Public is On The Other Side kind of cool during election time because you get to be right for no other reason than you have no one to convince but yourself. And when you take part in kitchen table and coffee shop politics you are neither the winner or the loser. You simply are. My husband and I have indulged in lots of kitchen table politics for a number of reasons, none of which include putting our political science degrees to good use (neither of us has such a degree) or being masterminds about such things. I have to admit when I was raising my kids I was more concerned about where they were, what they were doing, and if they would ever, ever make it through grade school than I was about the way the political wheel was turning in the town in which I lived. That, of course, has changed. Hence, the kitchen table politics in which I now participate for the following reasons: the kids are grown up and married, we are not babysitting one or several grandchildren, we no longer have a dog and a cat, there is nothing on television because the television is not working, we accidentally stumbled onto the subject of politics and we want to hear ourselves talk (impossible to do if the television is on, because it is always very loud because one of us has a hearing problem that may or may not be selective). Anyway, one thing we discovered we agree on is there are many issues to discuss. Sigh! Take the downtown core — empty. We shake our heads and our conversation is immediately stirred up with a whole lot of passion and a whole lot less knowledge as to how to fix the problem. But we do remember. We remember when we used to be able to run to the hardware store and say to the guy: “I need about six screws and a whatchmacallit to fix this thing under the sink in the kitchen. And the guy; the one you could spot easily because he always wore a smile and this blue denim coverall thing seemed to know exactly what you were talking about and he would rummage around until he found it. And we remembered going to the grocery store for bread and milk that took about five minutes. It was the chatting to the neighbors who were also picking up bread and milk or some other forgotten supper item that took the time. Ironically, both those stores were downtown. Yes, those were the days, we agreed. You didn’t need to wander around wondering where the sales people were and, more importantly, if and when you found one, would he or she would even know what a whatchmacallit was? And you didn’t have to drive all the way across town just to get milk and bread and be forced to line up behind a real shopper who had so many real groceries you couldn’t even see the checkout. And we both remembered when the movie theatre was right downtown. “What was that movie we watched with my sister and her husband in 1977?” I asked.
“I have no idea,” he said, his mind, no doubt, still on that little hardware store that has vanished off the face of small town Alberta. Poseidon Adventure, I said, triumphantly. And so ended our talk on politics and downtown Alberta, the
way it used to be and the way it is now. I wonder what ever happened to that hardware store and guy who knew what a whatchamacallit was? It seems they both have disappeared! And that’s a shame.
Assad survives, dodges US attack It was already looking likely President Bashar alAssad’s regime would survive — it has had the upper hand militarily in the Syrian civil war for at least six months now — the events of the past two weeks have made it virtually certain. Syria has already complied with the two initial demands of last week’s Russian-American deal. It has signed the Chemical Weapons Convention, and given a list of all Syria’s poison gas facilities and storage depots to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. That means that the United States cannot attack it for at least a year. President Barack Obama cannot now bomb Syria without endangering UN inspectors, who will be all over the regime-controlled parts of Syria by November to take control of the chemical weapons. Syria has a year to destroy them all and until and unless it fails to meet that deadline, bombing is out of the question. The civil war will probably continue for a good deal longer as Assad’s troops lack the numbers to regain control of the whole country right now but the tide is running in their direction. There is no unified rebel army in Syria. There are around a thousand armed groups that can be roughly divided into jihadists (many of them foreign) who want to found an Islamic caliphate in Syria and more moderate groups who originally took up arms hoping to create a democratic Syria. The less radical groups hoped the West would destroy Assad’s forces and put them in power instead (while keeping the jihadists out). They are angry at the United States for letting them down — they are also deeply disappointed, for the realists among them can see no other way to win this fight. Many of these fighters would now be open to a regime offer of a ceasefire, an amnesty, and a gradual
Gwynne Dyer Guest Columnist
transition to a less repressive political system. Such an offer may soon be forthcoming (whether Assad means it or not). It would not appeal to the jihadists but it might seduce enough of the other rebels to shift the military balance sharply in Assad’s favour. He would still have to defeat the jihadists but at least the country would emerge intact. Or maybe the war will just go on and on, ending eventually in partition. In either case, we have been spared the spectacle of the United States and its sidekicks attacking yet another Muslim country, only to realize in the end (as in the case of Iraq’s alleged “weapons of mass destruction”) that their excuse for doing so was false. The pretext this time was going to be Assad’s use of poison gas against his own people. The Russians are now saying the serial numbers of the rockets that delivered the nerve gas reveal they were made in Russia in 1967 and sold to Yemen, Egypt and Libya’s Colonel Gaddafi — who filled some of them with nerve gas. A lot of Gaddafi’s arsenal went missing after he was overthrown two years ago, sold off by the rebel militias. Some of those rockets could easily have ended up in Syria, in rebel hands, and the temptation to use them to trigger Western military intervention would have been hard to resist. If that is really the case, then President Obama should be grateful to Moscow for saving his bacon. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

Officials thanked for interest Dear Editor: I wish to publicly express appreciation to my MLA, Joe Anglin, and to Rimbey’s mayor, Sheldon Ibbotson. The rail disaster at Lac Magentic this past summer demonstrated to Anglin and Ibbotson that perils will be presented to our community when the rail loading at Rimbey’s western outskirt comes into operation. They sought to gain understanding of the risks and mitigation thereof, by exploring the exceptional rail
safety record of the Rimbey Keyera Gas Plant. Keyera’s Calgary office very gladly extended an invitation to Joe and Sheldon to tour our Rimbey facility and share their industrial expertise. We are fortunate as a community to have elected officials and a corporate citizen dedicated to our well being and willing to cooperate for our betterment. Mark Polushin

and social marginalization have put these people at risk and that racism has often denied these women adequate protection under the law. “The candlelight vigil is part of a campaign supported by many individuals and organizations and by some of our country’s leaders that begs to have addressed the centuries-old discrimination and impoverishment that put so many Indigenous women in harm’s way.” The candlelight vigils began in 2005 by the Native Women’s Association of Canada and are supported by a number of organizations including Amnesty International. Their goal is to draw attention to the plight of these sisters in spirit who have been stolen from their families.
The Rimbey Group of Amnesty International will remember missing and murdered aboriginal women and girls at a special candlelight service Oct. 4. The service is to be held at the Beatty House at 7:30 p.m. Florence Stemo, from the Rimbey Group of Amnesty International, said government statistics show young indigenous women in Canada are five times more likely than other Canadian women to die from violence. “In fact, there are very few indigenous families in our country that have not lost a mother, a sister, a daughter, an aunt or a cousin to violence.” She said research shows poverty

The theme for the Rimbey graduating class was “Life is Waiting,” but for the young men and women who filled the stage at the community centre Sept. 21, it seemed life, at least for one shining moment in time, had arrived. Throughout the evening, the young grads, splendid in their formal attire, listened to speeches filled with nuggets of wisdom, well wishes, common sense advice and humour. And even though the presenters agreed life was indeed waiting for the class of 2013, now and then the speeches took on a nostalgic twist, taking the grads back to the hallowed halls of Rimbey Junior/Senior High School. Class valedictorian Erica Trenson, who is living in Ottawa and studying political science, said people are surprised she went to school in a town without a Tim Hortons. “Actually they are dumbstruck that a town without Timmy’s even exists,’ she said. “And they are usually even more surprised that I know the name of everyone in my graduating class and, let’s be realistic, some of our parents graduated together and I have probably met your grandparents. The truth is, I miss Rimbey and I miss high school.” Trenson experiences a bittersweet feeling when she realizes she will never again walk the crowded halls of her high school as a student. The accomplished young woman gave credit to parents and teachers for helping all the grads make it through their high school years. She also thanked her classmates for making her own school experience a pleasant one. “Our grad theme is ‘Life is Waiting,’ but truthfully, life moves fast, things change, and if you don’t adapt, life won’t be waiting for long. Embrace every moment. Change the world. Get out there and don’t let your dreams be dreams.” In his speech, principal Tim Lekas also talked about the future. “You may not know where life is going to take you, but we are confident you have the skills to navigate the journey. As you reflect on change, I hope that you will come to understand that life’s adventures often do not come from what you have planned, rather, adventure is what you find along the way.” Lekas commended the gradating class for being a strong group who sup-
ported each other through the good times and the bad. “As we reflect on past years, one of the lessons we learned was how fragile life is as we think about our good friends, Corey (Walsh) and Eli (Palm) — who (have passed away) and are not on the stage tonight, but here in our hearts and minds. As a group, this Grade 12 class showed enormous strength and perseverance as they supported each other through some very tough times.” Lekas left the grads with the advice to not worry about being popular but just to be themselves. He added credit cards are not free money, exercise is good for you and you cannot live on Ramen noodles. He told them to write or text their mother or someone who loves them and his fi-

Pancakes, Olympic guest speaker, and foot races fill the day By June Norvila The Bentley School had perfect weather for their annual Pancake Breakfast & Turkey Trot on Sept. 20. After the annual pancake breakfast that made about $640, students were treated to a presentation in the elementary school gymnasium by guest speaker 24-year-old retired Olympian Monique Sullivan. She gave a presentation and brought along some equipment and many of the medals she has won during her nine-year racing career. In 2012 she competed in her first Olympics and also captured double gold at the Pan American Championships in Argentina. Sullivan, who is a native Calgarian, started competitive cycling when she was only 12 years old and the sport has taken her all around the world including doing some training in Australia and Mexico and other places. She showed her lightweight
16-pound carbon fibre track racing bike and other racing equipment, and spoke about the mental and physical preparation needed to be able to compete. Sullivan hopes she can inspire some kids to follow their dreams, no matter what it is — sports or arts or anything else. She has gone back to school to further advance her education. She was presented with an official school T-shirt. By 11 a.m. it had warmed up some and m ore than 250 grades 1 to 12 students, some staff, and some volunteers headed out running or walking to Camp Silversides where a free lunch was waiting and races took place. The announcer’s booth, the 1962 Jeep of teacher Jason Hazlett, was a hit with many students. Then it was back to the school to finish off the full day. Some walked while the younger ones were bused back.

Karroll takes a stand Thank you Bruce Christensen for providing an opportunity to explain my resignation. For those who will recall, after serving on council for nine years, I resigned six weeks before the election, (not in the middle of my term). My resignation may have created a false impression something was wrong and/or gave credence to the horrible negative attack campaign launched by the Rimbey Ratepayers Association (RRA), and many of those involved with the RRA. I was proud to have served with Dale Barr, Dave Huff, Wayne Clarke and Steve Schrader. All of these men were amazing councillors, were and are strong Rimbey supporters. None deserved the treatment they received last election from the RRA and those who attacked our council with rumours, innuendo and outright lies. I would love to let go of negativity but as recent as a few months ago I was personally attacked by Coun. Gayle Rondeel in an official town meeting, where she said my emails had been sent to the RCMP. In an attempt to defend my reputation, I sent repeated requests to town council and administration for a published statement, in-
cluding the fact I am not under some sort of criminal investigation; nothing has been forthcoming. Why did they attack me? I never sent any emails to Ibbotson or Rondeel. In retrospect, regarding my resignation, I should have held on to the end of the term but with the personal, mental stresses and health issues I was going through as a result of those attacks, rightly or wrongly, I made a decision to resign. I’m not going anywhere this time. I apologize to the citizens of Rimbey and those I sat on council with as that early resignation may have added to the impression something was wrong, and played a part in the complete council being swept from office. In reality, the huge growth in our town was a direct result of hard work and planning carried out by those councils I served on. Some of those accomplishments are listed along with “my positive plan for the future” on the website www.rimbeyelection2013.com Please get out and show your support for “A Fresh Start” and let’s get “Rimbey Growing Again.” Dave Karroll

Doreen Glanfield’s flowers are still a dazzling display of beauty and colour even though the fall days have brought cooler, crisp temperatures and even a touch of morning frost. Glanfield’s garden beautiful display This beautiful courtyard garden is a labor of love created by Doreen Glanfield and her late husband Fred. Treena Mielke Photo
Continued from page 12 After drawing up plans the couple went to work and created a courtyard garden with a black metal fountain set up in the centre. Red crushed rock is used in the garden, providing an appealing groundcover for the huge variety of beautiful plants and flowers. The walkway along the north side of the house, which was designed by Fred, features red and grey crushed brick between cement triangles. The effect is interesting and appealing.
The beauty created in their small backyard gave the couple many hours of satisfaction and pleasure. Glanfield now enjoys the beauty as well as the memories of making it all happen. And, when spring rolls around again, no doubt she will once again create a prize winning garden spot and one that will be enjoyed by anyone who happens to pass by. “I enjoy it,” she said. “It’s not the same by myself, but I still enjoy it.”

Fatigue can be fatal

Long hours are common during planting and harvest seasons on Canadian farms, and that’s when fatigue can turn fatal. The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) offers work plans that can help prevent this. “Safety is often about equipment and guards, but the most important safety tool a person can have is their attitude and subsequent decisions,” says Bonnett. “That could mean taking a 20-minute snooze when you are exhausted. Just take a break and you’ll go back to work with a clear head.” Although the human factor is a significant cause of farm-related hazards — humans are also the most important factor in farm safety solutions — your safety is about the choices you make. It just takes a moment to make a decision that could literally be the difference between life and death. Choose safety.

A gift of names Submitted by Karen Conover Almost two years ago we first met Destiny Ella Rose Elizabeth Cummings through unfortunate circumstances. She had been left on our doorstep about the same time her sister or brother had been left at the local school. Ironically, just the night before I had told my husband we had mice and I was going to war with them. When I mentioned this to my co-worker, she said, “This must be destiny,” henceforth the name Desty for short. In a brief span of time she literally opened our door, put smiles on our faces and showed us quickly she was a mouser and a keeper. We did all the normal things like spending lavishly on shiny toys, a litterbox, healthy food and trips to the vet for a checkup and eventually neutering. Having never had a family member of this intriguing calibre before, we thought we were doing all the proper and responsible things one ought to do with a new one. Much to our surprise she immediately became attached to our Cavy King Charles, Henry, and him to her. They tag teamed with those pesky mice too. Then along came the grandchildren for visits. One thought she looked like an Ella, another like Rose. Yet another thought she needed a name of royalty so of course, Elizabeth was added. There were times she was called by her whole handle too. Over these two years, I’ve often thought I would like to say thank you to whoever gave Desty to us. For non-cat lovers, she won a prominent place in our hearts and home. Recently she opened the door before we had locked it for the evening. She hadn’t returned in the morning. That evening we fortunately found her, lying on the side of the road, having been hit by a vehicle. The silver lining in this cloud of grief is that we know she was on her way home with her mouse in paw. We were raised farm kids, became urbanized, and now live in a small rural town. Regardless of lifestyle some things don’t change; pets, and people, come and go in our lives for various reasons. Grief remains the same, exposing our loss. The intensity varies but will always show us in a bittersweet way how much we care. There is a little grave near us now and when the grandchildren come we will again do all the proper and responsible things with their little hearts with huge feelings.

Heavy yields reported across Canadian Prairies The grain market continues to be afflicted by downward harvest selling pressure as great yields are reported almost everywhere across the Canadian Prairies. We can expect corn and soybean prices to follow suit in the com-
ing weeks as the American corn and soybean harvest hits full tilt. The yield numbers are still up in the air for the two predominant U.S. crops so there will be opportunities that wheat, canola, and other cereals may follow any rallies

higher. These should be taken advantage of though as those rallies are unlikely to sustain themselves. Be on the ready for these opportunities. One thing that may help is the demand side is the U.S. Federal Reserve and federal government continuing to be indecisive Brennan Turner about monetary stimulus FarmLead and the debt ceiling. Their lack of inaction is causing the U.S. dollar to fall, making it cheaper for international buyers to buy the same amount of grain than compared to, for example, a month ago. With so much wheat production coming off this year around the world, it definitely can be considered a buyer’s market. Between Europe, the Black Sea region, and North America, there’s a lot of export-ready grain available and Canada will likely be able to take a significant piece of that pie, unless the railroads can’t keep up with shipments out to port locations. Most recently, Canada Western Red Spring wheat with 12 per cent protein was available at British Columbia ports for $283 per metric tonne, about $30 less than that of U.S. hard red winter wheat with the same protein at the Gulf of Mexico. Who may pick this grain up? CNGOIC, China’s equivalent to the USDA, says that the Asian supernation will need to import 7.5 million tonnes of wheat this year after poor harvesting conditions in May and

June affected their crops. This a one million-tonne increase from their August estimate but still well below the 9.5 million tonnes that the USDA thinks China will need. Already, since July, China has bought 3.7 million tonnes of American wheat, 2.2 million tonnes of Aussie wheat, and 220,000 tonnes from France. Meanwhile, China’s PMI (purchasing managers index) climbed to a six-month high to 51.2 in September from 50.1 in August (anything below 50 is seen as a country in economic contraction; anything over 50 is seen as growth). This adds to the list of other data points that China, the world’s largest consumer of commodities, is bouncing back after a bit of a slowdown. China isn’t interested only in securing actual food supplies — they’re looking to make sure they control the entire supply chain. The Chinese Investment Corporation bought a 12.5 per cent equity stake in disgruntled Russian potash producer, Uralkali, as they continue its brand of outsourcing its food security. Uralkali (if you missed it) broke off its arrangement with Belaruskali, which made up one of the two global fertilizer cartels, the other being Canpotex (Agrium, Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan and Mosiac). Uralkali has the only dedicated railroad into China from Europe, making this investment by China’s sovereign wealth fund interesting. China also signed an agreement to lease nine per cent of Ukraine’s arable farmland (aka five per cent of the entire country or 7.4 million acres) for the next 50 years as they look to secure land outside their own borders to provide quality food for its people. This is a trend that we are likely to see continue over the next five to 10 years (a resource buying storm is brewing). Brennan Turner is originally from Foam Lake, Sask., where his family started farming the land in the 1920s. After completing his degree in economics from Yale University and then playing some pro hockey, Mr. Turner spent some time working in finance before starting FarmLead. com, a risk-free, transparent online grain marketplace. His weekly column is a summary of his free, daily market note, the FarmLead Breakfast Brief. He can be reached via email (b.turner@ farmlead.com) or phone (1-855-332-7653).

Bentley area electors will get to make a choice By June Norvila The candidate list for the Bentley municipal election includes two running for mayor: Joan Dickau, the incumbent mayor for the past two terms, and Lynda HaarstadPetten a town councillor. Running for one of the four positions for town councillors are: Basil (Butch) Howard and Cliff Knutson currently town councillors;
Robin Lemay, a former councilor and deputy mayor; Pam Davey, who ran in a past election; and new to the scene, Raymond Williams and Richard Diamond. Six trustees on the Wolf Creek Public Schools board of trustees represent residents from each of the five school wards. Running in ward 4, the Bentley/Eckville area, is incumbent
Incumbent focuses on goals Continued from Page 23 Hartford will also be the first female councillor since 1998. It’ll be a battle for votes in division 2 with five candidates vying for the seat. Running are Mark Matejka Lorrie Jess (who’s been acclaimed as ward 2 Wolf Creek Public Schools board trustee) Gawney Hinkley, who has 24 years experience with municipal politics, and Jerry Bonnett and Curtis Emes. Running in division 3 against Verheire is Ponoka born and raised rancher/farmer Doug Weir. He
graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in commerce. Weir had it in mind to run but didn’t make the decision until nomination day arrived. “I had a friend who died of cancer, he told me it was my civic duty.” McLauchlin, an environmental scientist and professional biologist, has some competition in the shape of farmer Roland Grutterink. Running for the division 1 seat are Bryce Liddle, Tom Griffiths and Svenningsen.
trustee for many years Karin Engen from Eckville; retired teacher Peter Sutherland from the Lacombe County-Blackfalds area; and business owner/mother of current school students, Pamela Hansen from Bentley. In ward 3, the trustee for the Rimbey/Crestomere area, incumbent Trudy Bratland is acclaimed. Also acclaimed are ward 1, the Alix area and ward 2 Ponoka. There are two ward 5 (Lacombe/Blackfalds) seats that will see elections with five candidates running including the two incumbents. In the western portion of the Lacombe County there will be no election. All incumbents were acclaimed. In division 5, Incumbent Ken Wigmore was acclaimed. For division 6, incumbent Keith Stephenson was acclaimed and division 7 incumbent Dana Kreil was also acclaimed. There will be elections in divisions 1, 2, and 3. Paula Law was the acclaimed incumbent for division 4.
Jaycox wants to heal rift in community Continued from Page 3 Jaycox has no experience in municipal politics, but he is more than ready to learn. If elected, he would support putting more money into the maintenance of the infrastructure. “We need to put more money into maintaining what we’ve got,” he said. “The sidewalk needs to be completed (to the provincial build-
ing) if the issue of moving the town offices there comes up again,” he added. Jaycox, who volunteered as a Big Brother last year and is chairman of the Church of the Nazarene board of directors, would like to see more young people in town. He supports the library expanding but would like to see the board look at fundraising as a way to raise more
money to help with such projects. An avid outdoorsman, Jaycox is pleased to be living in Rimbey where both he and wife Ruth Ann can experience rural Alberta. Before moving to Rimbey, the couple lived near the Keyera gas plant. The couple has two adult children, Robert and Matthew, and a 19-month-old grandson, Emmitt.
Community centre to be re-named after the late Premier Lougheed By Treena Mielke The Rimbey Community Centre is to have a new name, although a date when the name change is to take place has yet to be determined. At its regular meeting Sept. 23, council approved an agreement between Keyera Energy and the Town of Rimbey to buy the naming rights of the community centre at a cost of $25,000 per year for the next five years. Keyera has re-named the community centre ‘The Peter Lougheed Community Centre.’
John Cobb, vice-president of Investor Relations for Keyera said the decision to name the community centre after the late premier was made because of his close connection with Keyera and the town. “Mr. Lougheed had been chairman of Keyera’s board from 2003 to Sept. 2012. He also made a number of trips to the Rimbey plant. He really enjoyed going out there and it is a nice way to remember him on all levels.” As part of the agreement with Keyera, the town will be required
to install, maintain and remove signage supplied by the company. The town will also be required to use the specified name in all verbal and print communication. The will also provide space at the community centre to the company free of charge up to four times per year and will provide one free activity per month to the community on Keyera’s behalf. The five-year agreement can be expanded if the arrangement is deemed mutually beneficial for another five years.

McLauchlin running for third term on county council By Treena Mielke An environmental consultant running for his third term as councillor is hopeful he can continue to play an instrumental role in the long-term goals of Ponoka County. Paul McLauchlin who is the candidate for Ponoka County Council in Division 4 County is pleased to let his name stand again. “I believe I continue to offer much as an incumbent, as I can continue with the long term goals and plans to better serve the ratepayers of Ponoka County,” said division 4 incumbent Paul McLauchlin. “My experience has told me that the ability to lead, collaborate and to conduct oneself in an ethical and professional manner is the greatest asset to an elected official and I, fortunately, have those skills.” McLauchlin sees long-term planning as a top priority for county council. “The municipal development plan was a major accomplishment of council my first term and needs to be supported by long-term planning initiatives so that the ratepayers of Ponoka have a say in the future landscape of the county. My second
term succeeded in delivering a countywide Internet service along with rural addressing. My third term would succeed in strengthening the partnerships for seniors’ care, funding of infrastructure (bridges) and to pursue more provincial contributions to Ponoka County projects.” McLauchlin is a strong supporter of agriculture and believes a low tax environment is as critical to agriculture as is strong infrastructure. “We need to grow our non-linear and non-resource tax base to accommodate future changes in tax revenue streams. To further his education and give himself greater understanding of the role of local government in rural Alberta, McLauchlin is completing his master’s degree from the University of Leicester in England
specializing in public and private finance. “My dissertation is a cross sectional study on local government actions, incentives and needs to promote business (small business and agribusiness) in rural communities in commonwealth countries.” With all the responsibilities associated with running a local business, raising a family, improving his education and operating his farm, McLauchlin admits he is a busy person. “My view of my tenure to date on council has been that if you want something done you give it to a busy person. I am definitely a busy person who gets the job done.” McLauchlin is married to Melinda and the couple has two children, Adam eight and Trelaina, 10.

Ponoka County flooded by council candidates By Amelia Naismith Ponoka County election candidates need to pull out their running shoes, as there’s going to be a race for all divisions this year — excluding division 5 west of Rimbey. Before the nomination day clock struck noon Sept. 23, 13 candidates made their way to the county office to hand in their papers. Incumbents George Verheire, Gawney Hinkley, Paul McLauchlin and Gordon Svenningsen. Keith Beebe (division 5) is not running again. Nancy Hartford is the only candidate in division 5 and was automatically acclaimed to council. “This is unusual, especially on the first time,” said county CAO Charlie Cutforth. Continued on Page 22
