Store owner Denise Cooke says she contacted Sensible BC offering up her metaphysical books and gift store as a sign up spot because she favours the decriminalization of marijuana. “I am supporting it,” she said. She expected young people to be the first in line to sign the petition, but, despite marijuana’s association as a recreational drug, she says the signatories she’s seen are mostly people aged 60 and up. That surprised her, until she found out the reason they’re compelled to sign: most are people with medical conditions who are taking prescribed marijuana

According to SensibleBC, there are 158 signup locations in B.C. To find where to sign the petition, visit www.sensiblebc.ca/ sign. Volunteers may also register as a canvasser to help collect signatures. The most populous riding for Sensible BC is Surrey-Cloverdale, with 52,955 registered voters. Canvassers will have to sign up 5,296 registered voters in this riding alone. Sensible BC director Dana Larsen said 2,500 canvassers are now registered and are getting more efficient at signing people up. Larsen expects the bulk of sign-ups will

Perspective I think we all have nights where we lie awake, our minds racing about various worries in our lives. We worry about our families, our friends, our finances, our jobs, our reputation, our security, our health. We don’t like the unpredictability of life, of what might lie around the next corner. Indeed, life is out of our control in many ways, and we have limited resources to manage our worries. We tell ourselves that things are not so bad; that our situation could be so much worse, and we do the best we can to surround ourselves with various cushions to soften the blows of life. But, do these things give us enduring peace, assurance, and confidence? The Bible tells us to bring our anxieties to God. In Philippians 4:5-7, the apostle Paul writes: “The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” He then assures his readers that the peace of God will guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. The heron is a symbol Converting scrub into residential areas for people serves to displace birds and other wild animals To the editor; Re: “Neighbours Despair Over Bose Forest,” Sept. 26 Like most cities, Surrey has failed to recognize the importance of what is wrongly called “scrub brush”. These areas are widely seen as “useless” areas waiting only for tax-producing, mostly-residential subdivisions. Sadly, these “scrub” areas (which “we” produced through logging and clearing) are actually habitat for a range of wild

species, including birds large and small, mammals large and small (from coyotes and deer, to coons and prey animals like voles and field mice). Sadly, the strategy is to convert wild “scrub” areas into groomed parks that delight part-time, human visitors (aka voters). Aren’t we special? Aren’t we proud of our earlier “City of Parks” promise? Isn’t it fun to walk through a groomed park ... and see nothing

but squirrels (most of them “non-native”)? The heron in this photo is a symbol of all of the wild creatures displaced by thoughtless and pointless development. He has nowhere to go, and neither do any of the wild animals that are evicted when the bulldozers show up.

To the editor; Extremely sad to see the effects on the wildlife of the cutting down of all those trees on the old Bose farm property. ‘Bigfoot’ laid to rest Owner says farewell to giant python who spent final years in Surrey By Jennifer Lang Bigfoot, a 4.5-metre Burmese python who lived out his last days in solitude at a rescue facility in South Surrey, has died. He was prevented from being put on public exhibit for the last three years of his life, but the public – and the media – were invited to his cremation last Friday at an animal crematorium in North Vancouver to say goodbye. The massive, more than three-decade old Burmese python was put on ice after he died Sept. 23. “Bigfoot died sad and lonely,” according to his owners, Jozef and Bibiana Demcak, who said in a press release the snake had been part of a traveling exotic animal exhibit for than 30 years as part of Jozef Demcak’s Exotic Animals Science Museum

and the Jozef Magic Show. Bigfoot spent the last three years at Urban Safari Exotic Animal Rescue Society’s refuge at 1395 176 Street, but wasn’t on display and was kept apart from other snakes, including his relatives. The public facility does have snakes on public view, but none that are greater than three metres in length, according to owner and operator Gary Oliver, a friend of the Demcak’s. Demcak was prevented from exhibiting Bigfoot because he was unable to obtain a permit, under changes to B.C.’s Wildlife Act in 2009. Demcak’s attempt to challenge the Controlled Alien Species regulation – which covers dangerous animals from crocodiles to big cats – was ultimately unsuccessful, Oliver said.

Fundraiser to help ease financial burden for parents of kids with cancer By Jennifer Lang On a Thursday evening later this month, the Cloverdale Rec Centre will be filled with colourfully-costumed riders spinning their hearts out as the tunes blast. Billed as an indoor cycling celebration and fundraising event, the Inside Ride on Oct. 24 will be raising money in support of children, teens and their families living with and beyond cancer. Teams of six are encouraged to register for the ride, dress up in costumes, and have fun. Each rider takes a 10 minute spin on a stationary bike, and the event lasts less than a couple of hours. There are prizes for best costumes, most enthusiasm and the most kms pedaled. “Oh my god it is so fun! The costumes are great,” says Cloverdale’s Dave Dunbar, one of the organizers and a director with the British Columbia Childhood Cancer Parents Association, a nonprofit, registered charity that is once again the beneficiary of the third annual Vancouver Inside Ride. “The costumes will be amazing because it’s only a week away from Halloween,” he notes. The bikes are supplied by Coast to Coast Against Cancer, an organization that travels across Canada in support of children and families with cancer. Volunteers are also needed to help out. The Inside Ride represents one of the most important fundraising initiatives of the year for the group, raising $68,000 last year. “We’re actually trying to build and build on this,” says Dunbar, who adds it’s perfect for corporate teams. Then there’s the time requirement – just a few hours, making it an ideal fundraiser for grassroots organizations like the BCCCPA and for participants. One of the teams taking part again is Quin’s Angels, comprised of the Quin family, who happen to be friends of the Dunbars, and who knew their son, Quinn,

who passed away on New Years Eve in 2008. He would be 17 now. Quinn Dunbar, a student at Latimer Road Elementary, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in September, 2002. Two years into their cancer journey with Quinn, Dave and his wife Suzanne discovered the BCCCPA and decided to get involved. They’d seen many fami-

lies trying to cope without the kind of support they’d received from friends, family and their church. Parents of children who have been diagnosed with cancer face a difficult path. The Dunbars were shocked at the costs families incur, and by what the medical system doesn’t cover. Along with loss of income – at least one parent usually gives up their job during their child’s illness – travel and associated costs can be enormous, says Dave. “Forty per cent of all the kids are from outside the Lower Mainland.” A few hundred dollars can help lift an already difficult burden. The group helps provide financial aid through its financial aid program. “We give to families from every corner of the province.” The ride takes place Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Cloverdale Recreation Centre, at 6188 176 Street, starting at 7 p.m.

The new ER at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) opened its doors this week, and along with improvements to the inside of the hospital, things are different on the outside as well. There are significant changes to how people access the new site and where they can park. As of Oct. 1, access to the former ER entry from 96 Avenue will no longer be available. Instead, people will need to use one of two new entryways to access the Guru Nanak Emergency Services front entrance: • Use the new King George access if driving north on King George Boulevard. • Use the new 94A Avenue access if driving south on King George Boulevard or along 96 Avenue. The new ER and pediatric emergency centre are located on the west side of SMH (13750 96 Ave.), on Level 1 of the Critical Care Tower, which is slated to open next year. Parking is also changing as of Oct. 1: • A new Critical Care Tower underground public parkade opens below the ER with 220 stalls. • The 425-stall north parkade closes for approximately one year for demolition and reconstruction into a five-storey parkade. • The Lark Building underground parkade opens on 96 Avenue and 137 Street, with 585 stalls for public and staff hospital parking until the north parkade re-opens. At 57,000 square feet – five times the size of the current emergency department – the new ER is big enough to fit three NHL hockey rinks inside. The bigger building also comes with 275 more staff – about 80 to 100 of them in the ER – and 3,750 new pieces of equipment, much of it being purchased by the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation. The new ER is part of a $512-million SMH redevelopment and expansion. The rest of the project is slated for completion in June 2014 and includes a new eight-storey Critical Care Tower with 151 more inpatient beds, intensive care unit, academic space and perinatal centre.

Parenting, Valley style A Langley writer discovers there’s no time like the present to launch a new blog By Brenda Anderson raser Valley mommy blogger Kristyl Clark shudders a little as she recalls the precise moment social media (that wonderful, terrible double-edged sword of human connectivity) bit her squarely on the butt — her bare, soapy butt. The Langley mom was enjoying a quiet bubble bath, sipping wine and scrolling Twitter on her smartphone, when she stumbled across a post that caught her eye. “A big Fraser Valley lifestyle blog tweeted that they loved a new blog, and recommended checking it out,” said Clark. “So I looked — and it was mine. “I almost dropped my phone in the tub.” Clark’s new blogazine — She’s a Valley Mom — was far from ready to go live. It hadn’t been spellchecked, some of the stories lacked headlines, there were empty tabs, it was missing pictures and nothing had been formatted. Panic set in, and just like that, the late night sliver of “me time” the busy mother of two had managed to carve out was officially over. Pausing just long enough to wrap herself in a towel, Clark sprinted out of the bathroom and across her Willoughby Townhouse, trailing soap bubbles and the confused stare of her husband behind her as she raced downstairs to her computer. “I was going to take (the site) down, but it had already gotten quite a few hits,” she said. “It had been so top secret,” said Clark. At least, she thought it had. “Apparently everyone had seen it, so I decided to leave it up and readers could just grow with me.” Just like parenting, she laughed, blogging is a messy business. Clark still has no idea which button she accidentally pushed to spark her then half-finished website to life. But the philosophical attitude she’s adopted as a stay-at-home mom of Molly, 4, and Zoe, 2, helped her to shrug off the technical hiccup and carry on. She’s a Valley Mom has been officially up and running since the summer. The Fraser Valleycentric parenting blog offers readers everything from recipes and a family events calendar to Clark’s Pink Laundry column for Black Press, ideas for date nights, a weekly feature on inspiring moms called ‘Mom Crush’ and plenty of ‘90s pop culture references.

Kristyl Clark is a Langley writer and mother of two girls who recently launched a parenting blogazine – half blog, half magazine, connecting parents in the land of strip malls and mini vans with tips, resources and advice.

When Clark decided to leave her community news reporting job two years ago, she figured she’d thrive in her new role as a stay-at-home-mom. The 31-year-old bade farewell to her coworkers, cleaned out her desk and began to plot how she’d be the ‘perfect’ stay-at-home parent. “I had grown up watching the moms on TV and in the movies who always seemed to be happy, showered and put together,” she said.

“I dreamed about baking my own bread, immersing my girls with fun, educational activities and having a tidy, organized home. Boy, was I in for a rude awakening!” After a few days of full-time diaper duty, toddler tantrums, missed showers and mountains of pink laundry, the rookie mom quickly discovered that being a stay-at-home parent was nothing like she thought it would be.

‘My life is pretty much an open book’ From page 11

Clark also felt the pangs of loneliness that often come with the role — especially during the winter months. “The majority of my friends were working and I ended up being chained to the house because of my daughters’ nap times. I guess you could say I felt a little disconnected from the rest of the world,” said Clark, who decided to put her unused writing skills to use and launch a parenting blogazine. The goal behind the site, which is half blog/half magazine is to connect parents in the Fraser Valley with valuable tips, resources and advice from Clark’s army of Valley moms and dads who write regularly for the blog. And, of course, she’s happy to document her own parenting wins alongside some of her greatest crash-and-burn moments.

Ask us how to Move For Free! Worry Free!

Clark has poured out her soul in a post about overcoming an eating disorder, which she worries she’ll pass on to her own daughters. She also doesn’t hold back when she talks about the daily minutia of being a stay-at-home mom

“I think a lot of moms who blog are afraid of being judged.” - Kristyl Clark — fishing keys out of the toilet bowl and being peed on while shopping at the mall. “My life is pretty much an open book,” she laughed. “I’m the queen of TMI.” Clark jokes about her level of candor, but it takes courage to lay it all out in such a public forum, she agreed. “I think a lot of moms who blog are afraid of being judged,” she said, noting that

some commenters hide behind the anonymity provided by the web to say some pretty nasty things. Most, however, are supportive and appreciative. They’re happy to learn they’re not the only ones struggling with a particular issue, or the whole business of parenthood. From one mom’s disappointment about her inability to breastfeed her baby to a samesex couple’s experiences parenting in the ‘burbs, the blog won’t shy away from heavier subject matter, she said. “If I can make just one mom or dad think ‘hey, I’m not alone in feeling this way,’ then it’s worth every minute spent slaving away at the keyboard when I could be watching a trashy reality TV show.” Adding to the mix of parenting perspectives are six contributors who hail from across the Fraser Valley and beyond. fertility and a retired mom with two adult sons to a former teen mom from Cloverdale now raising a teenager, a single dad raising four kids and a couple of local family photographers — there’s someone almost every reader can identify with. “Just like the TV shows I grew up watching, moms in magazines always look so happy... so put together. Yes, there are lots of moms out there who are that way and kudos to them – I’m loving every minute of motherhood, but it’s a lot messier and chaotic than I ever imagined,” said Clark. “I think that if I had gone into it with a more realistic view I wouldn’t have had such a tough adjustment period.” Check out Clark’s blog at www.shesavalleymom.com, or follow the site on Twitter @shesavalleymom. A It is important to follow a regular

routine of appointments to see the benefits of waxing. If the hair is waxed often enough Tamara Artlett it can weaken the follicle and cause Total Bliss Spa less hair growth. The wax does not just remove the hair at the root but it also exfoliates the skin, providing smooth and silky skin. MYTH OR FACT? Waxing makes more hair grow back, or makes it thicker and darker. MYTH!!! The amount of hair that grows back after waxing can be altered for the better. Less hair will grow back, not more! As hair grows, it leaves behind cells to regenerate. When you repeatedly wax hair, you can slow down the cell regeneration process.

Research is now showing that Dr. Drew Sinatra food sensitivities can greatly impact our health. A common condition or symptom such as irritable bowel (i.e. diarrhea, constipation), heartburn, stomach pain, headaches, fatigue, hormonal imbalances, joint pain, or skin reactions (i.e. acne, eczema) can be due to food sensitivities. The gold standard for determining food sensitivities is the food elimination diet where particular food groups (i.e. gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, corn, etc.) are eliminated depending on the presenting symptom(s). A food allergy/ sensitivity test is also available via a simple blood test that screens for antibodies (immune cells) to the 96 most commonly consumed foods. Either option can uncover the real cause behind a presenting symptom. If you believe you have food sensitivities Dr. Sinatra offers free 15 min. consults on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Some people just don’t know or haven’t stopped to think about how damaging a collar can be on a dog who pulls – AT ALL – on a walk. When a dog pulls, even a bit, air flow is restricted and that can affect the lungs, heart, digestion and thyroid. Think of the nerves and glands that run through the neck area – or better yet, take a collar and put it on yourself and let someone yank you around! A bit dramatic perhaps, but it gets the point across! Whiplash like injuries can be subtle or severe and consequences can range from soft tissue damage to skeletal misalignment and even emotional trauma. The neck is a very sensitive area and needs to be protected. A proper fitting harness, ideally one that attaches on the chest of your pet is the best solution. This way, if a dog pulls forward, the chest attachment distributes the pressure and actually causes the dog to turn sideways. It keeps the neck and throat free of constriction and is a great training tool as well. Keep the collar for decorative and identification purposes and stop it from being a PAIN IN THE NECK to your furry family member. Come and visit us at The Bone & Biscuit Co. in Brickyard station for a proper fit on a new harness.

If you are thinking of buying a home, one of the first considerations is how much you need to save for a down payment. Once you know the price for your potential home, then factor in a percentage as a down payment. Feisal Panjwani, AMP A down payment is a partial payment on the home made at the time of purchase. In Canada, the minimum down payment is 5%; if you are putting down less than 20% you will need mortgage default insurance. It’s insurance, which guarantees the mortgage by protecting the lender should you be unable to continue your mortgage payments for some unforeseen reason.

For older children the element of competition motivates them to reach their personal best. Each student achieves successes such as learning a new move, improving a technique, breaking a board or earning a new belt rank which helps build confidence on their path toward larger goals. This confidence provides success in other areas such as school or other sports.

Q: What is a good age to start training in Martial Arts?

A Flora makes a herbal supplement called CircuVein® that has been clinically proven to reduce varicose or spider veins in just 2 months. It contains Diosmin and Hesperidin, both of which are ingredients from the sweet orange, and both have astringent action on the venous and capillary walls, increasing tone, decreasing distensibility and hence improving stasis and stagnation in the veins. Being anti-oxidants they can reverse the inflammation and the damages in the vessel walls. It works for varicose veins, spider veins, and haemorrhoids.
