Boundary cell service upgrades ahead Craig Lindsay West Kootenay Advertiser
Applications have been filed for the installation of two cell phone towers on Crown land between Midway and Rock Creek in Area E. Telus is partnering with the B.C. government to expand wireless service along 1,700 kilometres of highway corridors under the Connecting British Columbia Agreement. The two towers will help address coverage gaps in wireless data and voice communication services in the Midway area. “We recognize there is an increasing de-
mand for cell coverage in Grand Forks, and Telus plans to invest at least $1 million over the next couple of years to enhance capacity in the area for our customers,” said Liz Sauve, Telus media relations. “We’re taking into consideration the challenging terrain and location.” The company is looking at a few possible sites, each representing an $800,000 to $1 million investment. Section A is located about eight km west of Midway, near Ingram Creek just off Highway 3. The site is located on private land; the application is for the utility line only where
it crosses Crown Land, the Trans Canada Trail. The applicant is also applying to construct a road to the proposed site. For the associated tower on private land, the applicant applied for non-farm use in the agricultural land reserve (ALR), which is being processed by the ALC. While the parcel under application (trail) is in the ALR, extending a utility line over the trail, without any construction or road building, rightof-way widening or management or other activity, does not appear to require ALR approval. Section B is located
near Grand Forks and regards an application for a power line and communications tower near Wilgress Lake in Area E. There is also an application to construct a road to the site.

TACL celebrates accreditation

West Kootenay Advertiser
It’s hard not to smile when greeted by Maria Veltri and Pat Cheveldave of “Thrifty Treasures.” The two talk about their schedule, which really took off when they got involved with the Trail Association for Community Living (TACL). “You have customers come in and you have to smile and be polite and then if they ask you a question, you can’t be nasty,” Cheveldave laughed. “But I’m not a nasty person.” Executive director Nancy Gurr has been involved with the organization that provides support to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families for 25 years and it’s never a dull moment. “The individuals we provide service to make my job the greatest in the world,” she said. That’s been a reflection for Gurr since TACL recently received the highest level of accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of

Retirement Living at it’s Best
In this modern age there is no reason that seniors shouldn’t have the best retirement possible. The ideals of having a comfortable home, being able to set your own schedule based upon your interests, exceptionally delicious and nutritious food with the company of others: this should be the norm, not the exception. Seniors should be able to live in a place that ensures they can maintain their independence while also having their needs met, instead of just a ‘home on the hill,’ Fortunately Silver Kettle Village believes in the higher quality of life and aims to provide an entirely new form of housing to seniors that will ensure all residents will have the most opportunity to experience the best years of their life, on their terms. Silver Kettle Village is an amazing community located at an ideal location in Grand Forks, British Columbia. It features a variety of apartment sizes to suit any senior’s lifestyle ranging from studio apartments to two bedrooms supported with various cooking and cleaning services to ensure that seniors can spend more time living their lives and less time worrying about scrubbing the floors. Included in each of these maintenance-free suites is a range of features designed to accommodate even the most independent resident’s desires, while still having 24-hour emergency monitoring service for a little extra piece of mind. Full kitchens are laid out to be as bright and comfortable as possible and come with a stove and refrigerator to allow for the preparation of personal meals or snacks anytime. Each suite is also equipped with its own personal heat and air conditioning to allow the residents to decide their personal comfort level. Stepping beyond the privacy of their personal suite, residents will find a wide range and variety of common and shared areas including a fully stocked library, on-site beauty salons, a luxurious and relaxing spa room, a games room filled with a variety of leisure opportunities, and an activity-room which hosts a range of interesting events and entertainment. All this is supplemented with several very cozy and conveniently-placed
lounges. Each of these areas is easily accessible, and help to encourage the strong sense of community that makes the Village such a wonderful place to be. Silver Kettle Village also realizes just how much pets are a part of the family which is why the building is completely pet friendly, encouraging residents to bring their companions with them to share their suite. The hospitality services come with no extra charge to the affordable monthly rent which allow residents to enjoy worry-free benefits like the 24hour emergency monitoring, weekly housekeeping, the wide variety of daily social and recreational activities, as well as the complimentary shuttle bus. Also of note is the fantastic central dining room which is both elegant and intimate with its own fireplace. There, residents can enjoy delicious meals which are prepared by on-site chefs, and are served by a passionate and cheerful wait staff who are always happy to welcome guests and family to any meal. In addition to these wonderful amenities, utility bills including water, heat, air conditioning, and cable television are covered by the low-monthly rent, allowing seniors to spend less time worrying about bills and more time enjoying their retirement. Silver Kettle Village’s location in Grand Forks is only a short drive away from the small town’s historic downtown which is filled with an array of shops and services. Nestled in the Kootenay Boundary, one can be assured of spectacular and scenic views of the surrounding mountains. This setting only adds to a peaceful and relaxing environment that Silver Kettle Village aims to provide for its residents. With many parks, golf courses, and the magnificent Christina Lake located nearby there is an abundance of adventure to be had. Without having to worry about the responsibilities of home-ownership seniors at Silver Kettle Village are able to enjoy their lives to the fullest in whatever way they choose. Open daily, call (250) 442-0667 to find out more information or to schedule a tour.

Castlegar mystery took century to solve Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
Thirty-first in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names. For the past two weeks, we’ve been looking at Castlegar, which townsite founder Edward Mahon named in 1897 for his Irish ancestral home — a fact locals swiftly forgot. Several alternate theories emerged: • That during railway construction, a building resembled Castle Garden, the 19th century New York immigration port, which led to the shortened Castlegar. • That ‘Castle’ referred to a prominent rock formation overlooking Robson (otherwise known as the Lion’s Head) and gar was Gaelic

for ‘rock.’ However, gar does not mean rock in Gaelic. • That ‘Castle’ was for the Castle Rock, but ‘gar’ was after Algar Johnson, an early settler, sometimes nicknamed ‘Gar.’ • That two homesick
CPR engineers, Sullivan and Murphy, named a water tank Castlebar, after the capital of County Mayo, Ireland. A mapping error somehow changed it to Castlegar. It was also suggested
Castlegar might have been named directly after a place in Ireland, but usually assumed the namesake was a community in County Galway, not the Mahon estate. Only once was the true origin hinted at locally: the Castlegar News’ 1967 centennial edition told of Robson resident J. Heslop, who visited the manor in Ireland and met George “Mahan” — Edward’s nephew. The mystery persisted despite several dead giveaways. When Edward died in 1937, his Vancouver Sun obituary explicitly stated Castlegar was named for his family seat. In the 1970s, Edward’s son Bryan visited Castlegar with his family...

Logging proposed for Rossland’s backyard timothy schafer West Kootenay Advertiser
ATCO Wood Products is proposing a cut block of 37 hectares on unsurveyed Crown land in the Glenmerry geographic area southwest of Nancy Greene Provincial Park. Late last month Atco invited the regional district board to provide comments on the application. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary board of directors passed a motion that the application for a timber cutting permit in the Glenmerry area near Nancy Greene Provincial Park was supported, subject to consultation with the Castlegar Nordic Ski Club,
which maintains trails in the area, and the proposed access road is one of the trails. The trails are authorized under Section 56 of the Forest and Range Practice Act. “Depending on the applicant’s winter access needs, and their type of access, there is a potential for conflict,” said RDKB planner Jeff Ginalias in his report. “The applicant is aware of the Ski Club’s tenure in this area, and has been in contact with them on the proposal.” Logging in or around watershed areas is always sensitive, said Area B director Linda Worley, but following the provincial guidelines for practices and
stewardship should alleviate some of those concerns. “I have not personally been contacted, nor am I aware of any comments or concerns directed from the public regarding either of (the issue),” she said. The two cut blocks are on the south side of Highway 3, just beyond a prior timber harvest site which has been restocked. The blocks will be accessed by Glenmerry Forest Service Road, with potentially more roads cut in for in-block access. The main focus of the block is timber volume with some minor forest health being considered. With the proposed cut area in RDKB electoral Area B,

Thought-provoking films headed for West Kootenay screenings October 16 7:30 p.m. – Nelson Civic Theatre -- $10 Gold Fever is about the globalized race for resource extraction in Guatemala, and the lives of the communities and people who get caught in the front lines of the ensuing struggles. It takes viewers from a Guatemalan highland village to the corporate board rooms of the world – especially Canada’s – connecting all the dots between them. Reviewers have called it “eye-opening and inspiring”, and just months ago it won the 2013 Rigoberta Menchú Grand Prix at Montreal’s First Peo-
ple’s Film Festival. It is the hard-hitting story of three campesino women as they resist the effects of a transnational gold mine in their community. Faced with health harms, social conflict and environmental devastation, these women’s strength is are an example for others around the world saying no to huge developments that often favour the few, at the expense of so much and so many. Tickets can be purchased on-line or at the door. The film’s trailer is at www.goldfevermovie.com” www. goldfevermovie.com . For more information, call 250-354-4641.

and Winner of the John Basham Award at the 2013 Columbia Gorge Film Festival, Defensora follows the story of Maria and Angelica Choc, sisters who lead a Mayan Q’eqchi resis-
tance in Guatemala to reclaim ancestral lands and seek justice in Canada for the murder of Angelica’s husband, the shooting of German Choc Chub and the rapes of 11 Mayan
women. Set along the shores of Lake Izabal, where tensions run high against a backdrop of violence, intimidation and a history of forced evictions. The stakes are high

He studied the woods used - mostly oak in those days and the way sails were constructed; reading about why some were small or large,
and why they were up high or in the middle or on the lower part of the mast - it all had to do with physics and using the wind power to match up with the weight of the load below. “I use mostly spruce or fir,” says Gary, “I don’t use the heavy oaks they used to use because they’d be so hard to move.” The 30-gun frigate

Gary Brown retired from Teck some time ago, but he had other aspirations in the sixties. In those days he went with his heart and attended the Vancouver School of Art, now Emily Carr College, honing his skills as a painter. This was back when the college was situated in the busyness of downtown Vancouver. From the evidence in his home, every painting from those days was of ships and sailboats. But Gary had to leave that love for a while, getting married and raising a family - a tough call for an artist. This is where Teck came in (once called Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, then Cominco Ltd.) and he had to let go of the paintbrush. He used his artistic side here too, designing certain motifs for the company’s communications department. But when he faced retirement, what he really wanted, even

... was designed around (1805) the Battle of Trafalgar - the most favoured style of ships in that day. Says Gary, “The caravelle plan is fashioned in the style of the Mayflower. This shape was also used in regular merchant ships of its day, the 1620’s. It has a shallower draught which allows the ships to go into shallow waters. So they were actually a fishing boat.” The galleon shape is also very rounded and is the black ship in the photos, the

one closest to completion and the one which has the greatest number of finished sails.
Gary was able to find parts or improvise them from various local stores. The greatest challenge was in finding parts that most replicated the rigging pieces, i.e. block and tackle pieces. In building the hulls, he had to use small pieces of wood to get the rounded look, since he didn’t have a large kiln to heat long strips of wood to bend to the shape he needed. Every part on these ships does move, including the raising and lowering of the sails. REBATE

All three styles had specific purposes for their raison d’être, whether it was transporting people, supplies or ammunition. In the photos you are able to see the ships in various stages of completion with the galleon being the one furthest along to that point. It has the most sails and the most detailing so far. Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week October 4, 2013
Tip of the Week: The first week of each month is a good time to offer an overview for the whole month and not just the week. This month is quite dynamic with the Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars all changing signs and Mercury turning retrograde on October 21st. The Moon changes signs every 2.5 days so it is common. Yet, the New Moon in Libra on October 4 at 5:34 pm PDT is especially noteworthy because it ties in to a dynamic aspect pattern involving Uranus and Pluto. This means the entire month will be charged with some major power plays, changes, transformations and purifications because Pluto is the release valve in this pattern. (Read more about it by subscribing to my New Moon Newsletter and you can find it on my Facebook Fan Page: Sunstarastrology). The Sun will enter Scorpio on October 22 this year at 11:10 pm, so it will be colored by Mercury retrograde and also in Scorpio. This produces an extra curious and investigative energy pattern yet simultaneously a very secretive and private inclination, like a Private I or a spy. Venus is leaving Scorpio on October 7 and enters Sagittarius. The effect of this will be added cultural interest and attraction to travel, foreign interests, religion, quality journalism and philosophy. Mars leaves Leo and enters Virgo on October 15th which supports a strong work ethic so clear the way to make the most of it while it is there until early December. On November 1st, Uranus will again, for the 4th time out of 7, form an exact Square to Pluto. The effect of this transit is long term and revolutionary on a mass scale. On a final note, October each year offers a sneak preview of what the following year will be specifically about so pay attention and stay tuned….

Some new, exciting and provocative events in your relationships can be expected over the coming weeks. You may already see the signs or even be experiencing them. Some of these may prove quite challenging. Watch out for inflated emotions and perspectives and controlling tendencies. Wear your diplomats ring and hat and top…. A cycle emphasizing improvement is beginning now. Creating beauty both in your environment, through art and in the quality of your relationships is a core theme. Appreciating the gifts and graces of others is featured. With such a busy schedule these days you will have to make extra efforts to both express your own and celebrate the talents of others. The creative cycle now underway includes some deep themes. There is a distinct measure of intensity implied. Everyone is experiencing this energy pattern and your challenge is to be aware and give more. With your energy levels running high you should be able to. Your insights stand to be extra penetrating and potent; be aware how you wield them. Some new and perhaps unexpected changes close to home are a central theme now. These are directly linked to your career and some of your more important relationships as well. Your ambitions are running high as are your creative juices, and both are backed by an impulse to expand somehow. Whether you score or are scored on, it stands to be a big one. The pace is steadily gaining momentum. This includes dynamic and deep interactions with others. You may have to give a lot to others these days. At best you are steadily confronting fears and laying claim to hidden talents and potentials. These will take time to cultivate and refine but first you must access them. Be willing to dive deep. Acquiring gifts and talents is now in focus. These may be obtained simply by activation, by way of expression and experiential activity. Yet, you have to do the work. This includes overcoming blocks and resistance patterns. The other side of the deal is good old fashion perseverance. There will be rewards now but bigger ones later, if you push on with ardent grace.

A new momentum has begun for you. It likely includes financial motivations. To succeed you have to dig deeper than usual. As well, breaking through lines of resistance is a factor. These will likely include people and situations that are extra unpredictable. What is certain is that you want to increase your overall sense of stability. Stepping back and behind the scenes to rest, retreat and research continues. This includes some investigative work and perhaps some soul searching as well. What do you truly want and need? Outer sources may not have the answer, unless they are able to shed light on your deeper priorities and destiny. A mix of beginnings and endings among some of your closest friendships is a current theme. Either way, these will bring returns of some kind. Still, you may be left with mixed feelings. Some endings and/or completions are more noticeable than others and they leave an indelible mark. Yet you are likely feeling quite strong these days and will prevail. The New Moon is a signal for you to take initiatives to approach authority figures for favors and earned rewards. Private meetings where important decisions will be made indicate investments and ventures. A growing determination to achieve more is coming to a peak. This is one of those times when ‘who’ you know stands to be of greater importance than ‘what’. You are in an adventurous mood. Yet you need better tools, techniques and methods. This is a good time to take a few risks. Don’t expect everything to be neat and tidy. Be willing to learn by experience, trial and error if necessary. Others are pushing you to perform. By months’ end you will be digging deep; dig in your resolve and not your heels. Change is in the air for you. The good news is that your creative juices are flowing. Collaborations with other key players are a key to success now. Expect to work hard, as you probably have been over the past several weeks. Yet now it is different, a turn in the road. Be willing to multi-task. Blend in a playful approach for best results.

In 1988, Eleanore Dempster wrote The Laughing Bridge: A Personal History of the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which also said Edward Mahon named Castlegar, but locals failed to notice. It wasn’t until 2002, when Phil Markin, the city’s director of development services, looked at the original townsite plan and found Edward Mahon listed as the owner that Castlegar’s founder began to receive his due. Bryan Mahon died in 2005 but his wife Marolyn has since visited Castlegar a few times and received a much warmer reception. Local historian Walter Volovsek last year published The Green Necklace: The Vision Quest of Edward Mahon, a biography that devotes considerable space to Castlegar’s early evolution. Using Mahon family artifacts, he also curated an exhibit in Castlegar and North Vancouver. Edward Mahon didn’t live to see his beloved townsite flourish into West Kootenay’s secondlargest city. The difficulties that stymied its development appear to have finally been resolved in the 1940s, when larger blocks were subdivided into housing lots. Today Mahon’s original townsite is mostly residential. The 200-year-old home in Ireland that gave the city its name still stands, although it’s no longer in the family. The old stable is now a bed and breakfast.

Rangers: raise hands Kids love animals. The variety of creatures is fascinating, and many of us know the joy of having a pet or pets, or having friends who do. It didn’t take Earth Rangers reps long to get the attention of kids at Twin Rivers Elementary on Thursday, Sept. 26. The Earth Rangers is a group with ambition and it’s enlisting support from an idealistic and energetic generation. With more than 200,000 (and counting) members, they aim to make a continuing and expanding difference... and don’t bet against them doing just that. Earth Rangers is interested in cultivating any kind of support... check the website at earthrangers.com Jim Sinclair
