Memorial tournament celebrates six years of giving Submitted

Over the past six years a memorial golf tournament in honour of Rob Lehmann and Dirk Rozenboom organized by Ian Kozicky of BC Hydro helps to remember and pay tribute to some special coworkers who were lost too soon. The annual event also takes on a charitable giving side with the proceeds split between the East Kootenay Foundation for Health and the BCSPCA. This week Donna Grainger (EKFH) and Brenna Baker (BCSPCA) joined Ian to accept this year’s donation of $1,500 to

each group. The occasion is also extra special as the 6-year journey has resulted in over $20,000 in gifts shared by the two non-profit groups. Honouring these lives leaves a legacy of care for both humans and their furry friends. To learn more about the organizations benefitting from this generosity visit www.ekfh.ca or www.spca.bc.ca. Thank you to all those individuals and companies that support the BC Hydro Memorial Golf Tournament.

The B.C. Government is listening to taxpayers and conducting public hearings about next year’s budget. The province-wide consultations will be taking place until October 16, including a public hearing in Cranbrook today. MLA Dan Ashton, the Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services, is inviting interested taxpayers and stakeholders in Cranbrook to present their ideas on how to keep B.C.’s economy strong and what they want to see in B.C.’s Balanced Budget. The input the Committee receives will help determine what is included in the 2014/15 budget. Including the stop in Cranbrook, the bipartisan Committee is visiting 17 communities and conducting video conference sessions covering an additional four locations. “This important committee has come to Cranbrook 13 years in a row now,” said Bill Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East. “They present such a useful opportunity for my constituents and their businesses to come out and tell government what they want from a provincial budget, what we are doing right, and what we can do better.” In addition to attending and making submission at the public hearing, residents, business operators and stakeholders can make written, audio or video submissions, and respond to an online survey through the Committee’s website: http://www.leg.bc.ca/ budgetconsultations/index.asp To register for a public hearing, contact the Parliamentary Committees Office by calling tollfree 1-877-428-8337, or by emailing: FinanceCommittee@leg.bc.ca For more information on the work of the committee, including a list of committee members, please visit the committee’s website at: http:// www.leg.bc.ca/cmt/finance/budget-consultations.asp The deadline for public input is Wednesday, October 16, 2013. The Committee will report on the results of the consultations by November 15.

Take the time to appreciate a teacher on October 5 for often going above and beyond in their efforts to educate. dren, teachers are the only safe adult figures they will know in their young lives. Often the target of negative criticisms and the receivers of angry phone calls from indignant parents, teachers deal with it all in stride, taking care of Canada’s kids and doing their best to get these young people ready for life and higher learning. Showing appreciation for teachers is one way to recognize the important role they play in our children’s lives and, thus, in the future of our country. A kind word, an e-mail, a homemade card, or a fresh red apple can be a small gesture with big results. The facTS Statistics Canada reports that in 2005, public elementary school teachers put in an average of 7.6 hours unpaid overtime per week. In that same year, some 69 percent of teachers were women, a statistic that has been on the rise since 1989.

Learn to help your pet in an emergency The Regional District of East Kootenay’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team is hosting a unique training opportunity this weekend aimed at helping pets in an emergency. “Many people know that ESS looks after people in evacuations or emergency situations, but don’t realize that we also provide basic pet services,” says Central Subregion ESS Coordinator Anita Charest.

“We need to increase our training in this area and are hoping to find some new volunteers interested in becoming part of the ESS team.” The RDEK is working with the Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team and is offering two free courses in Cranbrook this Saturday and Sunday. “The courses are free and will provide people with a basic overview of emergency pet services and sheltering in evacu-

First Saturday becoming a Kimberley hallmark Submitted

‘First Saturday’ is a Festival of Arts, Culture & Heritage events that takes place on the First Saturday of each month from May to October. Arts venues, restaurants, and boutique shops in the Platzl and throughout Kimberley offer a variety of special activities including art exhibition openings, theatre, live music, talks, tours, street happenings, food, train rides, and historical and special events. This community event has been created by the Kimberley Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee, consisting of representatives of the Kimberley Public Library, Kimberley Heritage Museum, Sullivan Mine Underground Railway and members and mem-

ber groups of Kimberley Arts Council- Centre 64. ‘First Saturday’ was developed to create awareness and enhancement of community arts, culture and heritage activities, to increase participation by local residents and visitors in these activities, and to promote partnerships between community organizations and local businesses. The event has run each first Saturday of the month from May to September this year. It has featured a variety of arts, culture and heritage activities for Kimberley area residents and tourists, promoting the works of local artists and artisans, musicians, thespians, and writers. It has included train rides and powerhouse tours with Kimberley Underground Mining

Railway, tours of Kimberley gardens, hiking and biking on trails in the Kimberley Nature Park, historical walking tours, children & family activities and theatrical productions, pancake breakfasts, barbecues, indoor and outdoor concerts, art markets, artist and artisan demonstrations, a Creative Kids zone, and High Tea at the Chateau Kimberley heritage site. The First Saturday event on October 5th will be the last in the season and will celebrate Oktoberfest. Activities will be held in the Bavarian-themed downtown Platzl with local businesses partnering with First Saturday events to offer specials and to provide entertainment at some of their establishments. Mayor Ron McRae, as the Burgermeister, will

welcome visitors and open the afternoon’s events at which pretzels, bratwurst, accordion music, dancing and beer can be enjoyed by all. For the younger folk a parade will be led by Happy Hans, celebrating Kimberley’s new brand, “Kimberley is a good place to be”. Crafts, face-painting, theatre, story-time and a Root Beer Garden will be featured. Events that have occurred each First Saturday will continue of October 5th, including the opening reception for the art exhibition at Centre 64, an art market and artist and artisan demonstrations, musical entertainment, High Tea at the Chateau Kimberley, and guided hikes in the Nature Park. New this Saturday will be an Oktoberfest Scavenger hunt, an Old

Tyme Photo Booth, a Fall Harvest Roundup with food and entertainment at Centennial Hall hosted by the Kimberley Seniors Association, five Beer Gardens and a Root Beer Garden. Also celebrating Oktoberfest will be The Old Bauernhaus with Adi, the yodeling wood carver, performing and the Sullivan Pub offering live entertainment. When the afternoon’s events are concluded, Rocktoberfest begins with local band Sketch performing. Retirement Living at it’s Best

In this modern age there is no reason that seniors shouldn’t have the best retirement possible. The ideals of having a comfortable home, being able to set your own schedule based upon your interests, exceptionally delicious and nutritious food with the company of others: this should be the norm, not the exception. Seniors should be able to live in a place that ensures they can maintain their independence while also having their needs met, instead of just a ‘home on the hill,’. Fortunately Rocky Mountain Village believes in the higher quality of life and aims to provide an entirely new form of housing to seniors that will ensure all residents will have the most opportunity to experience the best years of their life, on their terms. Rocky Mountain Village is an amazing community located at an ideal location in Fernie, British Columbia. It features a variety of apartment sizes to suit any senior’s lifestyle ranging from studio apartments to two bedrooms supported with various cooking and cleaning services to ensure that seniors can spend more time living their lives and less time worrying about scrubbing the floors. Included in each of these maintenance-free suites is a range of features designed to accommodate even the most independent resident’s desires, while still having 24-hour emergency monitoring service for a little extra piece of mind. Full kitchens are laid out to be as bright and comfortable as possible and come with a stove and refrigerator to allow for the preparation of personal meals or snacks anytime. Each suite is also equipped with its own personal heat and air conditioning to allow the residents to decide their personal comfort level. Stepping beyond the privacy of their personal suite, residents will find a wide range and variety of common and shared areas including a fully stocked library, on-site beauty salons, a luxurious and relaxing spa room, a games room filled with a variety of leisure opportunities, and a recreation area which hosts a range of interesting events, games, exercise activities and entertainment. All this is supplemented with several

very cozy and conveniently-placed lounges. Each of these areas is easily accessible, and help to encourage the strong sense of community that makes the Village such a wonderful place to be. Rocky Mountain Village also realizes just how much pets are a part of the family which is why the building is completely pet friendly, encouraging residents to bring their companions with them to share their suite. The hospitality services come with no extra charge to the affordable monthly rent which allow residents to enjoy worry-free benefits like the 24hour emergency monitoring, weekly house keeping, the wide variety of daily social and recreational activities, as well as the complimentary shuttle bus. Also of note is the fantastic central dining room which is both elegant and intimate with it’s own fireplace. There, residents can enjoy delicious meals which are prepared by on-site chefs, and are served by a passionate and cheerful wait staff who are always happy to welcome guests and family to any meal. In addition to these wonderful amenities, utility bills including water, heat, air conditioning, and cable television are covered by the low-monthly rent, allowing seniors to spend less time worrying about bills and more time enjoying their retirement. Rocky Mountain Village’s location in Fernie is only a short drive away from the small town’s historic downtown which is filled with an array of shops and services. Nestled in the Elk Valley, one can be assured of spectacular and scenic views of the Rocky Mountains year-round. This setting only adds to a peaceful and relaxing environment that Rocky Mountain Village aims to provide for its residents. With many parks, golf courses, and the magnificent Fernie Alpine Resort located nearby there is an abundance of adventure to be had. Without having to worry about the responsibilities of home-ownership seniors at Rocky Mountain Village are able to enjoy their lives to the fullest in whatever way they choose. Open daily, call (250) 423-4214 to find out more information or to schedule a tour.

3 Facts you need to Know About... Clean Energy in BC...

1. BC has some of the cleanest energy in North America. Most comes from hydroelectric sources built decades ago, very little comes from fossil fuels (gas) and none from coal. BC Hydro is currently investing $1.2 billion annually in our old hydroelectric facilities. 2. BC gets 20% of its electricity from small, independent, clean energy projects, such as wind, solar, geo-thermal, bio-mass and run of the river, like no other North American jurisdiction. This clean independent power costs no more than power from most newly constructed generation. 3. The clean energy industry provides thousands of jobs, billions in investment & government tax revenues. Getting electricity from diverse sources protects us from too much reliance on a single source, helps BC Hydro meet the growing demand for power and adds to our economy. Newly minted citizen donates to the SPCA Submitted

The 2013 Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign is coming to a close and what could be close to a story line for a Tim Hortons truly Canadian commercial is one of the last case of cookies donation. Anthea Gill, Professional Practice Leader for the Diagnostic Imaging Department at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital took

her cookie giving to one from the heart as her donation to the BCSPCA in Cranbrook was also a moment to celebrate her newly awarded Canadian Citizenship on September 25. “My passion for animals, my love for my new country and my desire to support both the East Kootenay Foundation for Health and the Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary allowed me to do something fun and

special for the local BCSPCA,” shares Gill. Brenna Baker the new General Manager at the BCSPCA was excited about the visit and the gift as the chunky chocolate cookies which are going to be baked up for volunteers who generously give of their time. While doing the delivery a tour of the facility was in order and just like her passion for health care Anthea will soon become one of the newest

Is Your Pond Winter-Ready?

The signs are clear and there is no use in denying it - fall is here and winter will not be far behind. Frost on the grass and limp leaves in the garden are our reminders that it is time to winterize. This is especially true if you have a pond in your yard. The first step is to reduce the water level to just below the skimmer opening. While the water level is dropping, take a net and skim off the surface of the pond to get rid of any debris that has fallen into the pond, such as leaves and grass. Then, it is time to give those water plants some attention. If you have tropical plants, they are not going to make it through the winter if left in the pond, and they should be removed as soon as the water temperature drops below 15º Celsius. Depending on the variety, you may be able to use them as houseplants. Water hyacinth and water lettuce take a lot of work to keep alive all winter, so it is best to consider them annuals and just replace them each spring. Your hardy plants need to be cut down to about an inch above the root stem and then sunk into the lowest part of your pond. The best time to cut back the hardy plants is long before there is a chance of frost. When you are cutting them back, it is a great time to do a little clean up, remove any debris and string algae from the pots and stems before placing them back in the pond. When placing your plants back into the pond, remember your fish, they need a place to hibernate so give the fish the top priority as far as room is concerned. If your pond has an area that is at least four feet deep, you can overwinter your fish in it. To help them survive the cold, you should add a vitamin and mineral supplement to their diet in the early fall. It will help them build up their immune systems and add the needed stored fat to get through the hibernation cycle. Once the water temperature drops to 12º Celsius or lower, only feed them when they are actively up and roaming around and only as much as they will eat in 10 minutes. Remove as much of the uneaten food as possible. If the fish are hanging around at the bottom of the pond do not feed them. And do not feed them either when the water temperature is below 7º Celcius, even on warm days. Waste and debris will build up and emit toxic ammonia at the bottom of the pond, the very place your fish want to spend the winter. So clean up as much debris and algae as possible in the fall, and keep a portion of your pond open during the winter, by using a pond de-icer. The pond de-icer is not designed to heat the entire pond. It is a small heating element that works on a thermostat and it only keeps a small hole in the ice surface to allow gasses to escape. It also allows oxygen to enter the water to keep your fish healthy throughout the winter. Also remember to remove pumps and filters. If you have a pressure filter, remove the media and bio-balls and wash them out. There is no need to get it spotless because some of the algae and bacteria will be beneficial for next season. Store media and bio-balls in a dry place for the winter. If you have an ultraviolet light filter, it will need to be removed and stored indoors for the winter. Disconnect your pump and allow lines to drain, and then store the pump in a cool dry location in a bucket of water. Storing the pump in a bucket of water will keep the seals from cracking and the impeller lubricated. To prevent damages, plug the ends of any pipes that could fill with snow and freeze. If you have questions about winterizing your water features, come ask the pond experts at your local garden centre and you are good to go for the cold months. Till next time‌ happy gardening. Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.

The stages of breast cancer

Dedicated to a Cure, in the Name of Love. Experts agree that early detection of breast cancer saves lives. Screening tests can help diagnose breast cancer in its early stages, when it’s most treatable. Doctors recommend a clinical breast exam every three years beginning at age 20, and a mammogram every year starting at age 40. Breast self-exams and healthy lifestyle choices that include exercise, good nutrition and not smoking can also help protect women against the threat of breast cancer. During October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we remember the mothers, daughters, friends, sisters and wives who have lost their lives to breast cancer. We also salute the survivors whose successful fight against breast cancer gives us hope for the future and a cure.

These local businesses stand united with women everywhere in raising awareness and supporting the search for a cure.

Knowing the stage and grade of breast cancer is an important step in the fight against this disease. Submitted Once a breast cancer diagnosis has been confirmed, the next step is to determine the stage and grade of the disease. The TNM (tumour, nodes, and metastases) classification system is the most commonly used for breast cancer. The TNM system determines the size of the tumour and if the cancer has spread, or metastasized, to other parts of the body. Generally speaking, there are five recognized stages: • 0: the cancer is at a very early stage. Atypical cells have

not spread beyond the ducts or lobules into surrounding breast tissue • 1: the tumour measures 2 cm or less. The cancer has not spread beyond the breast. • 2: the size of the tumour is between 2 and 5 cm, and/or the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes. • 3: the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and may also be found in the muscles or the skin. • 4: cancer has spread to other organs or tissues. Once the developmental stage has been established, the healthcare team then deter-

mines the grade, or the rapidity of growth and aggressiveness of the cancer, with a microscopic examination of the biopsy tissues. • Grade 1: low • Grade 2: medium • Grade 3: high Knowing the stage and grade of breast cancer is an important step in the fight against this disease; it is what allows the woman and her healthcare team to choose the most appropriate treatment.

The best foods to help fight cancer

Photo submitted

Accepting help from others gives another resource in the fight against breast cancer.

What others can do to help in your battle A woman who is in the process of fighting breast cancer needs a great deal of support. Some days can be hard to get through, and a well-organized support network can make all the difference. Who will do the shopping and the housework? Who will come with me to my treatments? How can I find the time to rest? Many women have difficulty asking for help. Shyness, pride, or the fear of disturbing others prevails. And yet, being given a helping hand can facilitate adaptation to the changes caused by the cancer. When a woman accepts help from others, she is giving herself extra resources in order to fight this disease. These other people will include members of the family, of course, but also friends, co-workers, volunteers, neighbours, or someone who has lived through a similar experience. As well as providing support for the woman living with cancer, this network can give valuable help to her partner and children. Even under the best of circumstances, cancer can put a great deal of stress on family life. Everyone’s roles and responsibilities can change, and children and spouse alike are exposed to feelings of insecurity. On those more difficult days, it is reassuring to be able to count on someone, even if it’s only to walk the dog, prepare a hot meal, or take the children to the movies. A woman living with breast cancer also needs someone to talk to. She needs to be able to talk when she feels the need, or to be quiet without being questioned. Supporters and friends can be a big help with this as well.

Eating a specific diet can help to prevent breast cancer from taking hold.

Did you know that some foods are considered to be anti-carcinogenic? According to several researchers, a balanced diet rich in these so called super foods can help to prevent certain cancers. FruITS AnD vEgETAblES numerous studies have demonstrated

the effectiveness of fruits and vegetables in the fight against cancer. not only are fruits and vegetables a source of vitamins and minerals but they are also overflowing with phytochemicals and antioxidants, elements that prevent cancer. Cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower), berries (blueberries, strawberries, cranberries), tomatoes, and citrus fruits should all be eaten on a regular

basis. SOy In the form of fresh or roasted beans, drinks, tofu, or even chips, soy plays a key role in the prevention of several types of cancer, particularly breast cancer. gArlIC The anti-carcinogenic properties of garlic are such that some researchers say it is the most effective food in preventing this disease. Consuming one clove of garlic — flattened, crushed, or chopped — every day will help to slow down the development of many illnesses. grEEn TEA According to studies,

drinking three cups of green tea a day inhibits the development of cancerous cells in organs such as the breast, skin, and lungs. Other cancer-fighting foods include olive oil, turmeric, and flax seeds. In addition, specialists commonly

agree that it is preferable to limit consumption of red meats and alcohol and, you’ve probably guessed it already, exercise on a daily basis!
