Focus on fire prevention for children this week Renee Andor Record Staff

Comox Valley kids and youth will learn about fire safety this week in recognition of Fire Prevention Week. Courtenay deputy fire chief Kurt MacDonald notes the fire safety house will visit Courtenay elementary schools throughout October so Grade 3 students can learn what to do if they are inside a burning building. The Courtenay fire department also had a static display up at Home Depot on Saturday to teach the public how to be fire safe. “It reminds the public,” MacDonald says of the annual education, which

happens during Fire Prevention Week, from Oct. 6 to 12. “Having the ability to remind people to be fire safe — whether it be with their kitchens or checking their smoke detectors or smoke alarms, or having a way out of the house, an escape route and things like that — having it recognized throughout the province is huge.” Dubbed A Recipe for Fire Safety, this year’s campaign focuses on preventing kitchen fires. The website www. safeathome.ca features an array of fire safety information, such as the importance of having an escape plan and working smoke alarms, and how to teach kids about

fire safety. MacDonald points out kids themselves are great teachers, hence the importance of the fire safety house school visits. “They’re the best teachers of everybody because after they’ve gone through the fire safety house, it’s usually the highlight of the week for them,” continues MacDonald. “And when they go home and their parents ask them, ‘How was your day at school?’ that’s the first thing that comes out of their mouth.” Meanwhile, the Comox fire hall will hold its annual open house Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fire chief Gord Schreiner says fire

safety information will be on display. Plus, the public will have a chance to tour the fire hall and check out fire fighting equipment. The Comox fire department takes the fire safety house out to the schools in the spring instead of the October, and Schreiner points out fire safety education happens throughout the year. Schreiner adds firefighters go door-to-door to check Comox residents’ smoke alarms, and if they don’t have a working one, firefighters will install them free of charge. New this year, he says residents can call the fire hall at 250-339-2432 and make an appointment to have one installed. “In the last couple months we’ve installed free smoke alarms in 150 homes in Comox,” he says, noting early warning of a fire often means it can easily be put out by residents, and late warning can mean a damaged home, injuries to occupants or worse. “Boy, they can sure make a difference … A smoke alarm costs about $10 — that’s why we’re so adamant that we will give them away if need be to make sure people have them.” Cumberland fire chief Mike Williamson says the safety house will visit Cumberland Elementary School later this month to teach the Grade 3 students how to be safe in a fire. Wednesday, the fire hall will host students from Cumberland Junior Secondary School, who will learn about fire safety via a video and question and answer period. Courtenay Elementary School parent Kindle Parsons looked at the Comox Valley Food Bank across the road from the school and came up with an idea, a Book Bank for students. Students simply choose free books from the Book Bank that they want to take home as their own, and Parsons says the kids seem excited. “It’s fun because … there’s a connection that’s like, ‘I get to have a book?’ Like, they’re happy, they’re smiling, they get choices,” says Parsons. “They get to have it and take it home, and it’s their book — pride of ownership — they’re starting their own home library.” Parsons noticed the school has a high ratio of low-income families, and she points out it can be hard for parents to buy books for their kids when they need to focus on clothing and feeding them and paying rent. According to the Fraser Institute’s statistics for 2011/2012, Courtenay Elementary parents have a low average income compared to other elementary schools in the Valley. For example, Brooklyn’s average income is $68,800, Cumberland’s is $61,400, École Puntledge Park’s is $46,700, and Arden’s is $46,300, but Courtenay’s is $33,900. Parsons notes the Book Bank started unofficially last year when Comox Valley

Book Friends donated about 300 books to the school. Many of them went into the school library, but some extras, like repeats of the same book, were put on display at the school for kids to take home free. “We had so many books and they walked out of that school so fast,” recalls Parsons, adding that in June the Book Bank received about 60 books from the Rotary Club of Courtenay. “So, we put like 60 books out on the shelf — gone before summer, so we knew it worked.” In September, she submitted her idea for a book bank to the Aviva Community Fund, which hands out $1 million to various community ideas across the country. She could have free books shipped from First

Book Canada, but must pay about 75 cents per book to ship them. If she’s awarded money from the fund, she plans to get some of those free books shipped to the school’s Book Bank. The public votes on the ideas and the first qualifying round closes Oct. 14 with the winning ideas chosen by Jan. 28. Parsons’ idea is called Free Book Bank for kids and can be found at www.avivacommunityfund.org. Parsons says she likely won’t win the competition because there are thousands of ideas submitted, but she says already she’s had some local response to her idea she’s thrilled about. “Through Facebook, I have asked people to vote,” says Parsons. “Today, I have had

four people contact me through Facebook saying, ‘We’re going to set up a book bin at our work and we’re going to ask our customers to donate books.’” Anyone interested in donating new or gently-used, current books to the Book Bank can drop books off at Courtenay Elementary School (1540 McPhee Ave.) or e-mail Kindle Parsons at rutgersretreat@yahoo.com. “Everyone has books — a lot of people donate them to different places or even recycle them when they’re done,” says Parsons. “So, what I’m trying do is move books from other places in the Valley, from being your closet or in your garage, to being in our school and let the kids choose the book — that means a lot to them.” writer@comoxvalleyrecord.com

Harpdog Brown’s got the blues Harpdog Brown is absolutely the genuine item, the real deal. The way he puts his individual stamp on everything he does and with his command of his stage, you’ll be enjoying every minute of the show. The Dog started playing blues in 1981 and never looked back. He’s shared the stage with such greats as Matt (Guitar) Murphy, Pinetop Perkins, Tim Williams, Kenny (Blues Boss) Wayne, the Powder Blues Band, Willie Macallder, Jack de Keyzer, Fathead, Donald Ray Johnson, Morgan Davis and the late Dutch Mason. In 1994 Harpdog won the

prestigious Muddy Award, the only Canadian band to receive this honour. In 1995, he was nominated for a Juno Award for Best Blues Album. Brown is a wonderfully gifted singer with a rich palette of colours and an imaginative harmonica player who takes traditional blues into the 20th century. Harpdog Brown, who is this guy? • He’s been in the business as a touring and recording artist for over 30 years. • In 1994, Harpdog was nominated for two Muddy Awards from Portland Oregon’s Cascade Blues Asso-

L’Arche art from the heart

Funky quintet up next

After two weeks of performances by jazz trios, the stage at this Thursday’s Jazz at the Avalanche Bar fills up with a funky jazz quintet, accompanied by one of B.C.s best jazz vocalists. Five Note comprises Cameron Wigmore, tenor saxophone; Patrick Courtin, keyboards; Brad Shipley, guitar; Andrew Cullen, bass, and James McRae on drums. These guys are professional jazz musicians who love to stretch out on extended improvisational solos. Add to this outstanding lineup the quality of Sydney Needham’s vocals and you have the ingredients for an evening of incredible musical entertainment. The band is Vancouver Island-based, covering the music of Erykah Badu, RH Factor, Jill Scott, and more, and is influenced by D’Angelo, Saint Germain and Jamiroquai, among other artists. In addition to neo-soul vocal covers, the band plays instrumental jamfunk renditions of some seriously funky music. SAXMAN CAMERON WIGMORE leads the Five Note band Thursday night at the Avalanche Bar. Wigmore, a freelance musician with 20 years of performing and teaching experience. He has performed and recorded across Canada in Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver, and on Vancouver Island with bands in the genres of jazz, classical, funk, swing, R&B, ska, rock and surf music. He has performed with Ken Lister, Pat Coleman, at the Port Theatre with David Gogo, at the TD International Victoria Jazz Festival in 2009 and 2010, and gigs regularly around the Island with a number of different bands. Cameron studied with Phil Dwyer, Pat LaBarbera, Don Thompson, Pat Coleman and Kirk MacDonald. In addition to studying music in Toronto at Humber College, he holds a Bachelors of Music Degree in Jazz

The threat of rain on Oct. 5 did not keep 85 Glacier Greens Saturday Men’s players from participating in their annual fall wrap, better known as the Devils Scramble. The format for the tournament is six holes best ball, six holes scramble and six holes of the dreaded dice game. On Friday afternoon a tee location was drawn from one bucket and the five-man teams were then drawn from five different handicap buckets. Each team had one low handicap player, three middle of the line and one high handicapper. Following play each player was treated to a fine barbecue steak lunch prepared by our own Ben Gill Catering and a visit to a wellstocked prize table. Storm rages unchecked in 7-0 win over Icemen Earle Couper Record Staff

What kind of storm wreaks devastation of the sort seen Saturday night at Rod Brind’Amour Arena? The Campbell River Storm. After gathering force Thursday by handing the Nanaimo Buccaneers their first loss of the year, the Storm blew out the Comox Valley Glacier Kings 7-0 on Friday. It was a tough loss for the third-place Yetis, who went into the weekend just one point back of the second-place Storm in the North Division. Campbell River now sits five points up on Comox Valley, who also lost 6-2 to the Saanich Braves at home Saturday. To say Friday’s Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League tilt in The River City was lopsided would be an understatement. The Storm out-shot the Glacier Kings 65-31, with Courtenay’s Jack Surgenor picking up the shutout and firststar honours and Michael Hails taking the loss. Second star James Severs and Gage Golpron netted two goals each to pace the C.R. scoring as the Storm led 2-0 after one period and 4-0 after two. The Storm went 4-for-8 on the power play and the Icemen were 0-for-6. The two North Division rivals decided to do-si-do midway through the second stanza as Grant Iles of C.V. and Zack Sanderson of C.R. earned early showers after swapping knuckle sandwiches. The Glacier Kings returned home Saturday looking for better things against the Braves. But Saanich had other ideas. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead just four minutes into the game en route to the 6-2 win. The Braves out-shot the Glacier Kings 29-22 and went 1-for-7 on the power play to Comox Valley’s 1-for-4. After a relatively calm first period things heated up in the second with a series of penalties then escalated in the third with several players tossed for fighting. Six different Braves hit the scoresheet and Jordan Werezak picked up the win. Duncan Pernal and Jonas Harvath tallied for the Yetis with Hails and Blake Pearson both

seeing action in goal. Comox Valley will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak Wednesday when they visit the Westshore Stingers. Then comes a weekend home-andhome with the Kerry Park Islanders; they host the Isles Friday (7:30 p.m. Sports Centre #1) then return the visit Saturday. ICE CHIPS The Storm never trailed in upsetting the Bucs and snapping their unbeaten string at nine, and doing so right in Nanaimo … Surgenor was re-acquired by C.R. in a Sept. 19 trade with the Sicamous Eagles of the KIJHL … he first played for the Storm in his 16-year-old season before joining the Dawson Creek Rage of the NAHL … sports@comoxvalleyrecord.com

Basil Stewart Lang

October 11, 1937 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; September 30, 2013 With huge sadness we announce the sudden passing of Basil Lang. Born in Belfast Ireland, Basil came to Canada at age 18. He received a B.S.C. and B.Ed. and began teaching in Grande Prairie. In 1972, he moved his family to Courtenay and worked as a surveyor for Wagner & Associates. The family next moved to Port McNeil where he worked for RD Mount Waddington. Later, Basil ran a consulting business and then finished his career teaching at North Island College. He retired in the Comox Valley and spent his winters in Mexico. Basil is remembered by his wife Gwyn; sons Tim (Becky and Billie), Dave (Donna, Roman and Lilly), and Rob (Erica, Paris, Sophie and Esme); brother Ian (Judy); sister Hazel Fullerton; the Reillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (Mike, Lesa, Keiran, Kalen, Duff and Chichi) as well as countless family and friends. He was predeceased by his brother Norman and sister Dinah Patterson. Basil was highly active, a great athlete and avid traveller. He was known for his love of life including camping and teaching as well as his love of Irish Drinking Songs which he would play to anyone. A Wake will be held at Sunnydale Golf Club on Saturday, October 12 from Noon until 4 pm. Please bring a story to share. No flowers but if you wish, you can instead make a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation on Basilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s behalf.

Martin (nee Spencer) Juanita Lorraine October 8, 1939 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; September 27, 2013 Passed suddenly during the night of September 27, 2013. She is survived by her loving husband of over 50 years Glenn, son Sheldon, brothers Clarence Jr. (Linda), David (Jackie) and sisters Karen (Rennie) and Marilyn, granddaughters, Brittany, Sara, Amber and Cassandra as well as nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grandnephews. Born and raised in Halifax, N.S until 13 years of age, the family moved to Camp Borden, ON where Juanita would finish her schooling in Barrie, ON. She worked many jobs on the base as well as in Barrie (cosmetics etc). She met and married Glenn on the base in 1964. When Glenn got out of the army, they moved to join his family on the Queen Charlotte Islands. From there they moved to Kitimat, Shoal Harbour, Kokish and then to Jeune Landing where she worked as a Weigh Scale Operator for Rayonier Canada. Juanita and Glenn moved to Courtenay where they built their own home which they lived in for the last 32 years. Juanita became Glennâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business partner in their Roto-Rooter franchise for 18 years before retiring. Juanita loved her home, gardening and flowers. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. No flowers by request please, cremation and get together to celebrate her life to follow.

Cumberland’s gluten-free bakery opens to rave reviews It’s been estimated that as many as 50 per cent of Canadians have at least a mild insensitivity to gluten. Upwards of 30,000 people in the Comox Valley, then, should be happy to know that a 100 per cent gluten-free bakery has just opened in Cumberland. Sillycakes GlutenFree Bakery has already managed to attract a devoted following. These followers include more than 500 fans of its Facebook page, where owner Sarah Vallintine regularly posts her daily selection of baked goods and fans can preorder their gluten-free goodies. “There are a lot of us in the Valley who can’t eat gluten, and many more who are experimenting with a gluten-free diet,” says Vallintine. “But just because you can’t eat wheat doesn’t mean you don’t deserve great baked goods.” While timing has certainly been a factor in Sillycakes’ quick

Fassbender’s frivolity Every once in a while, a politician spouts a beauty quote that is hard for us wags to ignore. They are human, of course, and they are players in a very competitive game. Players who have a microphone and notebook in front of them more than almost anyone else too, it should be noted. That all stated, B.C. Education Minister Peter Fassbender needs to shake his head. School board trustees around the province are now in full scramble mode trying to come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars each to cover the costs of the 3.5-per-cent raise CUPE employees just earned in their negotiations with the provincial government. Fassbender says school boards protesting this extra cost should have known it was coming. He also said he believes some school boards wanted to wait and hope the NDP was going to win the May 14 provincial election. Huh? We believe it’s fair to assume an NDP government would have settled a deal with their union friends in CUPE for at least the same amount the Liberals managed. Is Fassbender suggesting an NDP government would have found some other pot of funding to cover the increased costs to local districts? Is he also saying that’s what local school boards were banking on? Perhaps Fassbender is smarter than we give him credit for. Maybe he purposely offered the slight against the school boards and raised the May 14 election as a way to deflect people from the real issue: the flawed funding formula for K-12 education. Remember, entire school boards, the people you elected, can be fired if they don’t submit a balanced budget. It’s happened in the past, right here on the Island (Cowichan, 2012). Our local school board is heading in that direction, too. Perhaps it is buying some time with some open-house info sessions, but we hope they can come up with $1.5 million in savings before the minister feels he has to step in and remove duly-elected local officials. Forget the fear-mongering Dear editor, I was interviewed recently with Mike Hamilton by CBC radio regarding an update on the situation at Maple Pool Campsite, which has become home to some 50 or more residents. People in the Comox Valley have shown an overwhelming desire to help these mostly lessfortunate folk, and more importantly have expressed loudly their desire to leave well enough alone. The City of Courtenay, realizing the existing use of the property did not meet zoning requirements, and was operating on land deemed to be on the floodplain, decided there was a liability issue. In an effort to cover their collective legal butts, they brought about a class action suit against the Lins and their operating of the campsite as it stands. This would have resulted in the eviction of the residents, most of whom would have ended up homeless. A group of prominent businessmen took it upon ourselves to try and solve the issue. We have engineers, lawyers, contractors, heavy duty equipment, we talked to DFO, MOE, the local native band, addressed problems for adding fill and/or raising sites, and got enthused about trying to help. That was 14 months ago. Courtenay council has yet to grant us an audience, although Mike Hamilton has met with CAO David Allen. Let it be said we are not a group representing the Lins (although we admire what they are doing) nor are we anticouncil. Because this case has been before the courts, council has been reluctant to discuss the issues openly. With the exception of Mayor Larry Jangula, no council member dare commit publicly on his or her stance. They continue to hide from the problem in ‘in-camera’ meetings behind

closed doors and are afraid to make a decision. City lawyers and staff are explaining the pitfalls to council and rightly so — that is their job. None are earth-shattering, however. But it’s time for council to stand up and do the right thing and allow the continuation of Maple Pool. The simplest solution and one put to the city administrator several months ago was to have the campsite owners (Lins) and all residents sign a waiver releasing the City of any liability should a flood occur. We are still awaiting their response.

We should also be reminded that any flooding that has taken place to date has been minimal, ankle-deep with no erosion due to high tides and excessive rainfall and melting in a ‘perfect storm’ scenario. It’s nothing like disasters of late in Calgary and Colorado. One last point is that many buildings and renovations have been allowed on the floodplain without an eyelid batted at council. The Lewis Centre and Old House are two obvious ones, so why not grant Maple Pool a variance? The residents have an address, a place to call home, a sense of community. They are far enough from town so as not to be a nuisance or a bother and yet close enough that they can walk to town. I know in my heart that council, their administrator and staff would like to resolve this. I know the campsite owners and residents would too, as would most of us in the community. I ask that common sense and compassion prevail over fearmongering and legal prohibitive stumbling blocks. Brent Cunliffe, Courtenay

Dear editor, I find I must write to condemn Tom Grant for his outburst against the GE-Watch presentation at Comox council. As reported, Grant uses his sister as his sole reference point. How scientific is that? We are very lucky in the Comox Valley that Dr. Thierry Vrain has moved here and his Innisfree Farm is a living example of how to produce locally grown GE-free foods. We are also lucky that the GE-Watch local group has been doing research and educating the community for years about

such things as how the huge corporate Monsanto is buying up the world’s supply of seeds and forcing the world to become the buyer of their products — at great profit to Monsanto, and a great loss to us, the consumers. It is disrespectful of Tom Grant to disallow the credence of educated presenters to a council meeting. Let us hope that the other municipal councillors and regional district representatives will be more educated than Tom Grant and vote the right way! Gwyn Frayne, Courtenay

‘Lovely picture’ has one catch

Dear editor, When Murray Presley started spinning his web of lovely pictures, in his recent letter to the editor (Record, Sept. 24), the first thing which went through my mind was; this is too good to be true. Of course there was a catch. What was being “promised” in exchange for the lovely picture he painted, was that the local politicians change their minds and change the community plan. Changing the plan so many citizens worked so hard on, to give an outside developer what he wanted. The OK to build a large development of homes and make a lot of money. But is the exchange a good one? Not in my opinion. The developer gets what he wants and the community gets to set aside their needs. Developers need to do a bit more work prior to deciding they want to build somewhere, so they can make a lot of money (not that I’m against making money). Developers ought to have a look at what the community plans are. To come in and say, this is my land, I want to make it work for me, I don’t care what you want, is just plain dumb/poor planning, not to mention disrespectful of the local citizens. Murray, Murray, Murray, please don’t spin these fantasy schemes. They work well for the developer but not so much for the majority of citizens and all the animals in nature. The area in question is forested. It holds back water. Without the forest, and just buildings and blacktop, where will the water go, if there is a severe rainstorm? Dear editor, On Oct. 9, Comox council will receive a report from the committee established three months ago to stay the demolition of Baybrook, the original Mack Laing home. Mack Laing is perhaps one of the most famous Comox residents of the first part of the 20th century (1910-45). He wrote extensively on birds in our estuary and in the Comox Valley. The community effort co-chaired by the leaders of the Comox Valley Nature, and Project Watershed consisted of an historian specializing in the Comox Valley, a heritage planner,

committee’s hope that council will see the potential for such a plan. We believe we can develop a business model that would be cost-recovery and at best a revenue-generating enterprise that would bring people to the town. Let’s capitalize on the natural beauty and tourism potential that makes our community such a spectacular place to visit and an even more spectacular and special place to live. Dear editor, A week ago I was browsing through the Vancouver newspaper headlines in a local drugstore and saw Calgary Mayor Nenshi’s photograph, along with an article about a newly formed group that hopes to unseat him in the upcoming fall election. The name of the group is Common Sense, a name which rang a bell because I think that was the name of the ‘slate’ that ran in Courtenay in the last election. Recently I remembered hearing a spokesperson for the Manning Centre for Building Democracy (Preston Manning) who stated they wanted to be involved in politics at every level, civic, municipal, and provincially, so I Googled to see if there was a connection between this Centre and Common Sense. And, yes, a big connection! In Alberta, developers, realtors and others donated $1.1 million to the Manning Centre, and

Youth Odyssey A group of approximately 15 young people from across the country are pedalling into the Comox Valley this Wednesday. As part of an Odyssey from Sept. 7 to Oct. 28, they are performing a play entitled Cycling Through Change in communities along the way. After 20 years of providing literacy support through free one-toone tutoring, the Adult Learning Centre is marking its 20th anniversary by inviting its past learners, tutors, staff and volunteers to an open house. The purpose of this event is to acknowledge the dedication and commitment of volunteers and community members who have helped adult learners in the Comox Valley to improve their lives by teaching them to read, to write and to learn basic skills in math and computer. The goal is to profile the work we are doing to support adult learners and with immigrants new to the English language. The open house this Thursday will last from 3 to 6 p.m. at 1507A and B McPhee Ave. in Courtenay. Come and share memories with old friends, enjoy the music of Rachel Fuller (new ESL co-ordinator), watch a slide show created by Terry Avery, enjoy the anniversary cake, speak with staff about new programs and be a part of the first event to take place in our expanded facility.
