Clearview report card shows enrolment increase RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter Battling to see growth in the number of students in classes in the past few years, Clearview School Division has recorded a one per cent increase in official enrolment for 2013-14. That was boosted most significantly at Coronation School, with 303.5 full-time equivalent students. “This is great news for the entire division,” said Ken Checkel, who chairs the board and represents Coronation. “Support that we are receiving from our communities and the excellent work done by our school staffs have a lot to do with the increased enrolment.” For the official enrolment on Sept. 30 to calculate provincial funding, the Clearview School Division registered 2,350 students
(full-time equivalent). Coronation School saw the largest increase in student enrolments, with a year-to-year increase of 21 students, or seven per cent. Those increases have been attributed to students from nearby Consort, located outside of the school division, coming to Coronation School as a school of choice, and new businesses in the area that are bringing in new families. Coronation — 303.5. Gus Wetter — 222.5. Brownfield — 37. Byemoor — 27.5. Clearview already expected a slight increase of nine students over last year. With the new enrolments now calculated, the public school division saw a 12-student increase to projections done last spring and an increase of 21 students
over last year. “We are very pleased that the community and division staff are able to work together in identifying these students,” said John Bailey, superintendent of schools. “The earlier we can provide supports for a student that needs additional help, the better their successes will be in achieving their full potential at the end of Grade 12 and beyond. “This is a keystone to the beliefs Clearview public schools has had for many years in providing an inclusive education for our students.” Enrolment for other Clearview schools includes: William E. Hay — 519. Stettler Elementary — 445. Stettler Middle — 282. Erskine — 117. Big Valley — 80.
Donalda — 59. Botha — 56.5. Stettler Outreach — 35. Balance of the enrolment is students in Hutterite colonies. The largest increase was in the prekindergarten programming, or early learning program. Starting with a spring projection of 15 students based on last year’s enrolments, the division actually enrolled 39 students, representing an increase of 160 per cent. The school division did not see the growth hoped for in the Stettler Outreach School, which originally projected 61 students, and instead largely maintained their enrolments from last year at 35 students. Outreach enrolments typically continue to grow and increase throughout the year, and the school is optimistic it will meet its projections by year end.

Food drive marks end of Willis era RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter Just in time for the Thanksgiving season, Stettler and District Food Bank was replenished during the annual community food drive Monday night. “The community has always been so generous and supportive of the food bank” said Kathy Willis, who plans to step down at the end of this year after 16 years as the managing director of the food bank. “I just can’t say enough about the community.” Over the past five years, the food bank has provided food hampers for 400 families and households each year, she said.
“They’re so grateful for the hampers,” Willis said. Each month, the Stettler food bank distributes an average of 114 hampers, as donations have flourished in recent years. In previous years, the food bank monthly distributed 112 hampers in 2011, 125 in 2010, 120 in 2009 an 93 in 2008. For the recipients of the hampers, 54 per cent are for households with children and the rest for adults only. Shelves of the food bank are restocked from donations during the annual food drive held the first Monday of October, with help from Stettler Regional Fire Department and ATCO Electric. “Our food bank is fortunate that we don’t have to organize any food drives or campaigns,” Willis said. “The community and local groups initiate them for us.”
KATHY WILLIS With the long-serving managing director departing, the food bank society is seeking a successor, and more volunteers and a director for the board. “Kathy has done every job there is to do in the food bank and she has gone above and beyond,” said Betty Birch, president of the food bank society. Along with a new
director, the society is putting out a call for more volunteers. “We need volunteers to work in the food bank, people to pick up bread and groceries each week, and we need more people on our board,” Birch said. Stettler food bank relies on residents in the region to donate food and funding, because provincial and federal government funding doesn’t support food banks. Food donations can be made at Sobeys and NoFrills grocery stores in Stettler. Fresh vegetables and fruit are accepted, but not canned food or wild meat. Monetary donations help purchase products such as milk, eggs and meat. Cheques can be mailed to Box 1492 in Stettler. For more information on the food bank, phone Birch at 403-742-0732.
After being accused by the Wildrose Party of using taxpayers’ money to support the provincial PC party, the County of Stettler has released information that it says clears the current council of any wrongdoing. “The current council and administration remain committed to avoiding any partisan political events and we will continue to work hard to build relationships with all levels of government in order to best serve our residents,” Reeve Wayne Nixon said in a news release Friday, a couple of weeks before the Oct. 21 municipal election. “We take the allegations made against us very seriously, and because of that, we conducted a thorough financial investigation within our organization.” After searching through records dating back almost a decade, the county found instances in the past in which the county has paid for staff or councillors to attend politically-associated events, all of which happened prior to 2009 with the ruling Progressive Conservatives. Over the past decade, the county paid more than $3,440 for councillors and $3,100 for staff to attend Tory events. “Unfortunately, at the time, it was not uncommon for municipalities to attend political events in order to have face time with ministers and other government officials,” Nixon said. “County council at that time was trying to build relationships that have benefited our community in many ways, including the rural water distribution system, Fenn Road and other important community infrastructure. “However, the most recent council has put a stop to such partisan behaviour and no expenditures on these types of events have been made since our council took office in October 2010.” The county has released the results of an internal investigation, which follows on the heels of recent and repeated Freedom of Information and Privacy requests from the Wildrose. The opposition party allegeded that the county communications director used county time and email to create a Facebook page to promote former county reeve and Progressive Conservative cabinet minister Jack Hayden, who went on to lose to Rick Strankman in the April 2012 provincial election. “The internal review, of which will be made available to both the public and to the Wildrose Party as part of our obligation under FOIP, does confirm that all contributions to political causes happened prior to the current council taking office,” Nixon said. The county said the list of contributors is available for viewing at the county office, but that it wouldn’t release the list outright. During the internal investigation, administration also found the Wildrose allegations about erecting election signs and the use of employee time to create a partisan Facebook page to be untrue, the county contends. “There was no evidence to suggest that either of those activities have or are currently taking place,” said Tim Fox, the chief administrative officer for the county. “They also made allegations that we have stopped using email, which is also a baseless accusation. We rely on email to keep our office running productively and efficiently.” Serving as reeve under the previous council, Earl Marshall said the county had often purchased tickets to political events and required councillors to reimburse the county before such events. “There were some deadbeats on council who wouldn’t reimburse the county for tickets, so we fixed the problem,” Marshall said. Soon after, council approved a policy that all tickets had to be prepaid to the county before events, he said.

Leaders take risks and earn trust Leadership is defined as, “A person who guides or directs a group ...” There are, however, a myriad of opinions and views on the subject of leadership. My own personal interest and opinions on this topic fall within the parameters of what I would call servant leadership as taught in the Scriptures and displayed most effectively and profoundly in the life of Christ. Fundamentally, genuine biblical leadership has its roots in character and conduct, not control. Subsequently, the goal of Christian leaders should be to serve God and others, not to obtain titles, recognition or accolades. One key aspect of Christian leadership is that the leader needs to be an example to those in their sphere of influence. King Christian X of Denmark powerfully demonstrated that. With Denmark under occupation during the Second World War, the king noticed a Nazi flag being raised. He called the German commandant and demanded that it be taken down. When his request was refused, King Christian said, “Then a soldier will go up and take it down.” The commandant replied, “Then that soldier will be shot.” The king replied,
“I don’t think so, for I will be that soldier!” To comprehend leadership, one must also distinguish between managing and leading. They might look alike, but there’s a significant difference between managers and leaders. A manager seeks security as he/she administers, maintains and utilizes systems. A leader takes risks and earns trust as he/she innovates, builds up and engages people. The manager maintains and holds the status quo, while the leader transforms and moves forward. The manager relies on systems, the leader believes in people. The manager counts on control, the leader builds on trust. Managers endeavour to do things

right; leaders strive to do the right thing. The late Peter Drucker stated so well that, “Leadership is not magnetic personality. That can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not making friends and influencing people; that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person’s vision to higher sights, the raising of a person’s performance to higher standards, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations.” Jesus gives His overview of leadership in Matthew 20:25-28, saying, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority ... But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many.” “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” — J. Maxwell

MONEY TALK
Financial advice ‘more important than ever’ By Peter Boys ‘The Financial Coach’ Having just returned from a conference for professional financial advisors at the Banff School of Fine Arts, I was struck at the relevance of many of the speaker’s topics. One speaker resonated with me — Preet Banerjee is a television host with the Oprah Winfrey Network, a columnist at The Globe and Mail, a W Network money expert and a personal finance blogger and podcaster. Google him! I’ll share some of his observations and insights/advice. With the endless array of financial products and advice, and the talking heads on TV, it’s no wonder people are confused and skeptical. And the truth is, most
Canadians are naïve and irrational about things financial. Advertising is pitched to consumer’s immediate gratification. Banks, car dealerships, finance and credit-card companies are making it ever easier to get access to credit. It’s no wonder Canadians have piled on so much debt. Debt was a “four-letter” word to previous generations, but today it’s just a word. It’s time for a shift in perspective, to start hating debt and loving savings. Consider car ads now offering weekly payments stretched over 84 months — that’s seven years of payments! If you made the same payments for five years into a high-interest, tax-free savings account, you could pay cash for the car! We need to
relearn the merits of earning interest over the evils of paying it, if there is any hope of getting out of debt. We all know that the best way to make money over the long haul is to buy low and sell high. So why do we do the opposite? Fear and greed cause us to cash in our investments when markets drop, then wait until markets are back up to buy back in. In this process, we repeatedly lock in our losses. Today, we don’t count out $20 bills to make our car, mortgage or other large payments, so we are disconnected from our money. Plus, debit and credit cards make instant gratification, or “retail therapy,” as I like to call it, easy, piling on ever more debt. Even worse, many of us
are only paying the minimum payment each month at 22 per cent interest. Consider that a young couple today, earning $50,000 each, have the potential to earn more than $3 million during their working lives, adjusted for future pay increases. So why can’t they save any money? One clue might reveal itself if you asked a 50-year-old what they paid for their first house, compared to their last vehicle. But the biggest problem is that no one has ever shown them how to budget, and they don’t have rainy day funds to cover at least three months’ bills. Today, it’s common to run out of “money” before running out of “month,” then rely on credit for the remaining expenses. That’s
great for bank profits, but it can quickly turn into a downward spiral of debt. And if you have a reasonable payment history, credit-card companies will keep jacking up your credit limit, so you can take on more debt and pay them more interest. You can’t track what you don’t keep track of, so this is where personal finance software to help with budgeting comes in handy. I use Quicken, but there are others that can download transactions, reconcile statements to make sure that all the charges are legitimate, and make sure you’re staying on track with saving and spending. A trusted financial advisor can help you sort through those issues and also get you started toward financial security.

Harvesting leadership in Prairie politics As summer turned to fall in Alberta recently, it also marked the beginning of the 2013 civic election campaigns across the province. It’s very appropriate that we have these elections at this time of year, when all throughout the Drumheller-Stettler constituency, the annual harvest is ongoing. These elections are a similar process. In the process of choosing your local mayor, town council or county council, Alberta has many very capable and good leaders available. We just have to have the tools to harvest the crop and reap the benefits of good leadership. These civic elections are an important opportunity for all of us to choose whether we want leadership or simply representation from the people we elect at a local level. Peter Drucker, a famous 20th century writer, professor and a management consultant, whose writings contributed to the philosophical and practical foundations of the modern business corporation, once said that “management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.” The decision about what the right thing is should be determined based on the will of the people who put the elected candidate in their respective position, not by what rewards the decision will reap for them personally.
From the Legislature MLA Report by Rick Strankman Managing or simply doing things right ignores any possible changes that could be applied to achieve any forward progress. Leaders possess the vision that allows them to set their sights on the things that truly merit attention that will result in achieving positive progress. Over the next short while, Albertans will have the opportunity through public forums to challenge their candidates and find out whether they intend on being leaders or representatives. The forums will allow the taxpayers the opportunity to pose questions to those running for office to clarify what kind of leadership they intend to provide. Proper leadership allows the constituents to manage them, rather than them managing the constituents. This
doesn’t mean they’re allowing themselves to be controlled, but rather this means being accountable to assure they’re being proactive to their constituents’ needs. Remembering that being accountable to others is a sign that a leader is focused more on your success than just their own. We all play a part in leadership; it isn’t just making an X on a ballot that makes the mechanism of government work properly. Good government starts from the bottom and works its way up to and beyond the office held by an elected candidate. In order to challenge the candidates on the ballot and determine who the real leaders are, it will require well thought-out and respectful questions being brought forward by the electorate. I encourage everyone to participate in this important mechanism of democracy wherever possible in these elections. I would like to extend my sincerest best wishes to all the candidates that have put their names forward in their respective elections. By putting your name forward, you have already shown leadership. If you have any questions concerning this column, please contact my office in Stettler or Drumheller.
Social licence new buzzwords for procrastination on issues The recent Agricultural Biotechnology Conference has been held for a number of years and has started to expand its presentations into other biotech perspectives such as forestry, energy, industrial considerations and others. There usually isn’t much controversy at these events, being much of it is preaching to the choir. What there is at times is a growing sense of exasperation at the slow rate of development considering the approaching overwhelming spectre of feeding almost 9 billion people — that’s double what it was just a few years ago. Although it would seem that development itself is not the issue, it’s the regulatory mechanism that is in place that slows down the process that is causing the aggravation. That’s to be expected from those that invest millions in development, but time delays of 10 years and more seems rather excessive to get approvals. It would seem to be to society’s benefit to find ways and means to speed up the process. However, a new bug in the ointment might well preclude any time-lag improvement. What has added to the slowdown in the process is a whole new hurdle that was unheard of not too long ago. It’s called “social licence” and it’s become the new buzzword being used with almost any issue that might impact any change to human development — which seems to be everything. Social licence was the undertone to this conference and the words were all too often mentioned in many presentations. The definition of social licence is rather loose and subject to different interpretations, depending on which side of the issue you stand. The assumption is that it refers to public approval of whatever new research or development is being considered or being done. That’s about were any agreement on the definition ends, because it’s
“the who is issuing the licence” that becomes the bone of contention. When it comes to scientists, researchers and industry, the understanding is that public approval means government regulators and self-imposed standards. To lobby groups that oppose whatever those folks are doing, that’s not good enough anymore, but their version of social licence seems to more nebulous. There is no central entity that they can point to as the issuer of social licences that drives the research community to further exasperation. Most suspect that lobby groups really mean that they will be the issuer of any social licence. They hide that self-appointed role under the guise of protecting the interests of the people against the ominous unknowns of some nefarious technology. In the past, these groups tried to promote that antitechnology perspective, calling it the “precautionary principle.” It would seem they now have a new stick to pursue that angle — and it’s working. I expect much of the public expects the government to protect their interests when it comes to technology development, being that’s what they elect politicians to do. But the public seems to be easily spooked by GE technology fearmongering in the media. That in turn sees politicians sniffing the political winds and causing the regulatory to go slow on regulation and approval. One didn’t detect at the conference that there was any specific plan to gain a social licence, except that it was needed. There was a consensus that education was the medium, but the problem is where to start and what approach to take. It all

seems like a moving target that would be frustrating to those that see the common sense and science in technology. No doubt public relation consultants will be making millions providing advice on how to deal with “social licence” to every organization, research agency or corporation on the continent. One is tempted to set up a social licence certification agency where anyone paying a fee, of course, could obtain a framed licence complete with a prominent usable logo that stated the agency, researcher or cause, that after meeting certain criteria, had an official Social Licence number and therefore could go ahead with their business. Considering the history of certifying foods and activities for any number of dubious reasons or intentions, I fully expect lobby groups are thinking about just such a social licence idea. Stay tuned ... and remember that you heard it here first.

Fighting fires truly a team effort CHASE ROSLAND Independent reporter
As the Stettler Fire Department partnered with ATCO Electric on Monday night for the annual community food drive, firefighters advised homeowners to check batteries in their smoke detectors. “This is an event we do every year,” said Mark Dennis, the Stettler Regional Fire Chief. “We also asked whether people have two escape routes planned for their homes and at work, and knowing what the family needs to do in the event
of a fire.” The regional fire organization also hosted an open house last Saturday at the Stettler fire hall, which features a new paved parking lot. Along with lunch, visitors were treated to a demo with fake smoke, using a thermal imaging camera, and interaction with the local firefighters. National Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct. 6 to 12. This year’s theme for fireprevention week is homecooking fires, the No. 1 cause of household fires.
“Panic is one of the biggest problems with home-cooking fires,” Dennis said. “Fires over the past 20 years are trending down, but the seriousness of fires is not, because of all the new construction methods and different materials from years prior. “Fires are burning much more rapidly. The time window from when smoke detectors go off until the time to evacuate the house is decreased immensely. It has gone from 20 minutes to less than two, till the room is fully

engulfed. Until you see it with your own eyes, it’s very hard to believe.” The measurement of just how ferocious fires burn is measured by a specific calculation by the amount of fuel load present. “It’s astonishing the amount of fuel load that is in our homes today,” Dennis said. “Everything in our homes is made of hydrocarbons, which involve plastics and manufactured woods (made from glues and other added residents). Education aids local firefighters Continued from Page A6 “The type of smoke that comes off the fuel load is very toxic. You don’t want to be breathing it in for a very long time. The furniture we have today is highly flammable. People have to be aware and cautious to prevent fires.” Stettler regional firefighters have attended the educational fire departments’ instructors conference in Indianapolis, bringing back new training information on techniques to teach firefighters how to be safe not only for themselves, but for

fire-prevention activities.” “The techniques we use today have changed completely from years past,” Dennis said. “The reason being, because of the speed in which a fire is burning, it has caused the time to look for victims in a burning building to be significantly reduced, from the time we get the call to the time we get on scene. Because of the time decrease, we are not able to take in hand lines (waterlines). We also don’t have time to ventilate with highpressure fans before we search for victims. Continued on Page B3

TOWN COUNCIL NAME: Malcolm Fischer.
NAME: Steven Wildeboer.
HOMETOWN: Stettler.
HOMETOWN: I was born and raised in Lacombe, and moved to Stettler in 2009. Stettler is now my hometown.
AGE: 63. FAMILY: I live in Stettler with my wife, Sharon. I have two children, Shauna and Scott, and two stepsons, Justin and Braden. I’m thrilled to have two lovely granddaughters, Aidan and Drue.

YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: One three-year term as town councillor, during which I have served on several committees and have chaired FCSS and Regional Waste Management. YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: My involvement stretches over many years, and involves being on numerous boards (curling, golf, minor baseball and hockey, etc.), coaching and managing teams, being ceremonies chairman for Alberta Summer Games and provincial men’s curling playdowns, being in many, many plays with Gilbert and Sullivan and HATS, and performing with musical groups like Cantus Choir and the Country Music Jamboree. YOUR HOBBIES: A bit of golf and curling. My involvement in the vintage car hobby is extensive, both enjoying the friends new and old, and the events. My friend Bob Poapst and I have planned two very successful international antique car meets. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: Honesty, dependability, common sense, genuine caring for my community and the people in it.

YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: My experience is three years as Stettler town councillor and, before that, I had four years of involvement on various Lacombe County committees. ALL the people in it. MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: I don’t have any individual issues and I am concerned that if we do, it can blind us to the bigger picture that involves serving the needs of the entire community. In the term just ending, I served on many committees and boards, and have always done my best to make a meaningful contribution to each and every one of them. My tendency is much more to get things done than to just dream and chat about them, and I am proud to have played a meaningful part in town business. Stettler has much to be proud of and is a progressive, well-respected town. Always looking forward to making things better yet is a valuable perspective, and solving other problems that arise is a must.
YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I enjoy coaching my son’s soccer teams for the last few years. I am involved in a local church. I have been on a number of committees and enjoy participating in the yearly fundraising efforts of a number of local organizations. We enjoy going for bicycle rides, and camping as a family. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: Excellent listener who is easy to discuss with, making others feel comfortable when talking with me. I am a thoughtful and a logical decision-maker
who has strong desires to care about others’needs and I am concerned for others. MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: Continual growth for the Town of Stettler. We need to continue to make this a business-friendly town, by keeping taxes low, and by developing more commercial and industrial lands. At the same time, we must also balance Stettler as a family-oriented community. Stettler is a safe community filled with hardworking people. We need to encourage people to maintain this aspect of our community. Slow and incremental growth is what we need to continue to see. The growth needs to be sustainable for our infrastructure and our financial capabilities.

Town of Stettler For the Town of Stettler council vote, that could be rather simple. “We hope people are informed that they need identification, so they are not frustrated for presenting acceptable identification — proof of ID and address,” said returning officer Greg Switenky. “We encourage everyone to make sure they bring appropriate ID to the pools — one piece of ID and a driver’s licence is ideal.” For those without a driver’s licence, a utility bill or cheque will be suitable, he said. That shouldn’t be difficult, because voters in provincial and federal elections are also required to present one piece of identification, Switenky said. With an advance poll today at the town office from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., polls on election day will be open at the Stettler Community Hall from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. “We want everyone to vote,” said Switenky, who noted that voter turnout in the last election was 29.5 per cent. That was the case with a mayoralty race, which traditionally draw more voters. Deputy clerks plan to locate polls at the seniors’ centre. A mobile poll is also available for voters bound to homes. For more information, phone Switenky at 403-742-8305 or visit the website at stettler.net. County of Stettler With the County of Stettler holding elections in five of the seven wards, voters will require

When electors go to the polls on Oct. 21 to vote for municipal councils and the school board, everyone must have identification before receiving any ballots. Under new provincial legislation, all electors in local government elections must present identification in order to vote.

photo identification and proof of residency for the particular ward. “Ideally, we want proof of where voters actually live, not where they own land,” said Shawna Benson, director of communications for the county. “We want to ensure everyone gets an opportunity to vote. “With 26 per cent turnout in the last election, we’re obviously aiming for higher turnout.” Voters are requested to bring proof of land description, which could be a tax notice, utility bill or mortgage information, Benson said. At each polling station, the county will have a land-location look-up service to help confirm required information. Voters can vote in the advance polls this Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the county office in Stettler. Voters can also request a mail-in ballot by calling, emailing or stopping by the office and asking for the special ballot. Voters can then mail in their ballot and still be counted. “This is perfect for residents who are away on holidays, in the hospital or away working,” Benson said. Clearview School Division With the Clearview School Division set to hold elections in three wards, voters, will also be required to prove that that they’re eligible to vote in a particular ward, said Clearview returning officer Peter Neale. “Our requirements request that people provide proof that establishes their identity and reasonable address — a residential address.” Ideally, a driver’s licence is an adequate piece of identification, Neale said. Full details of voting requirements are posted on the division website at clearview.ab.ca. — Richard Froese

HOMETOWN: Stettler.
HOMETOWN: Stettler.
AGE: 26.
AGE: 62.
AGE: 51.
FAMILY: Single.
FAMILY: Married to Barbara-Lynn, four children, seven grandchildren.
FAMILY: Single.
YEARS ON SCHOOL BOARD: None.
YEARS ON SCHOOL BOARD: None.
YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I have worked elections with my grandmother, and I have volunteered for the Handibus. I work at Bestway Travel, and used to run my own business, which I decided to close when I started working toward a degree in psychology. I am a helpful person, and if I see someone in need, I will do what I can to help them. YOUR HOBBIES: I love music, reading, writing, and travelling. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: I am a good listener, and I understand everybody’s perspectives, even when they are not my own, which makes me able to help come up with solutions that benefit everybody. I have the ability to be tactful, but I am strong enough to stand up for my beliefs, if challenged. I am a past student of the three schools and graduated with the assistance of TTC Outreach. Without the support of a smaller school, I would not be where I am today.
ucation is how the subject of funding is starting to become more important than the students themselves. The financial aspect of education is very important, but it is only one part of the whole system. To me, education is more than money, grades and extra-curricular activities. Education is also about building the character of students, so they can prepare for the world outside of school. We should be looking at ways to make students want to be in school. One of my suggestions is to give the students a voice, and poll them to get their feedback on the proposed, reconfiguration changes.
YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: While in Stettler, I have been involved with the schools as a substitute teacher and guest lecturer. I have served on the boards of Stettler Variety Showcase and the Performing Arts Centre. I have been a performer with Heartland Arts Troupe and helped with music at the Anglican and United churches. I am a business owner and operate Stettler Woodworks and Phoenix House Bed and Breakfast. I am the current chair of the Destination Stettler tourism committee. YOUR HOBBIES: Music composition and furniture building. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: I have the ability to compromise and conciliate. I have abundant board experience in many fields locally, provincially and nationally and have chaired many of these. Once I commit to something, I follow through. I am very comfortable addressing large groups of people.

MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: There are many issues
NAME: Cheri Neitz.
MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: Our school board has taken on many initiatives for this coming year. To name a few: we are in the middle of a Stettler complex reconfiguration study. We are also looking at ways of studying our smaller schools and we have government cuts to address. I believe that keeping our community well-informed and seeking for their input is the right approach. Through this process, we can all work together and form partnerships to help make our schools a great environment for our students to thrive, and our communities a great place to live and work.
HOMETOWN: Erskine. AGE: — FAMILY: Husband Guy, and children Ty, Kylie and Shayla. YEARS ON SCHOOL BOARD: Six years as a trustee for the Clearview School Division. YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I have participated in several fundraising activities for Stettler minor football and Wildcat football, put on banquets for the teams, taken thousands of pictures for the teams. Volunteer for Stettler Music Festival. For the past two years, I have been president of the Stettler and East Central Alberta Area Relief Society (a women’s organization that can be found throughout the world).
YOUR HOBBIES: Piano and photography.
YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I am very involved in continuing education, serving on the Stettler Adult Learning Committee and as a member of the Governance Team of Campus Alberta. I am also active in the Heartland Arts Troupe and serve on the executive of the MASH Pool League.
facing Clearview schools. Some I will focus on are school closures, the future of the Outreach school, and administration alternatives. There will need to be considerable consultation and collaboration to come up with acceptable solutions for these. All I can promise is to do my best.
YOUR HOBBIES: Hiking, downhill skiing and reading of all varieties. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: A passion for serving my community and a willingness to tackle issues directly and honestly. MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: The primary challenge facing Clearview schools over the next four years is how to maintain excellent programming and broad educational opportunities for students in an environment of shrinking provincial funding, increasing costs and expanding school responsibilities. Over the past three years, Clearview has spent close to $2 million in reserves to maintain staffing levels and programming in its schools. This approach cannot continue as reserves will shortly be depleted — sticking with the status quo, as has been
the approach of the board for the past three years, is not an option. I believe that Clearview must carefully review how it allocates funds, how it delivers rural programming and the costeffectiveness and efficiency of its central operations. A forward-looking plan must be developed to deal with financial realities. A rapidly changing educational landscape that includes increased choice and competition from other elements of the educational system, implementation of the provincial agenda for ‘transforming’ education and declining rural enrolment will also be a challenge. Major changes in legislation, special education funding and curriculum are already underway and trustees will need to keep informed on these initiatives and ensure that our voice is clearly heard by Alberta Education and the provincial government.

MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: I feel small public schools are a wonderful environment for children to grow and learn. My goal, if elected, would be to keep both Erskine and Donalda schools vibrant and viable, to ensure many more children can experience the positive educational journey my children and I have enjoyed.

kicked seven converts and a field goal.
The Stettler Wildcats made history last Friday as they hosted the first high school football night game in Stettler. And the Wildcats made it a night to remember, scoring a 54-14 victory over the Ponoka Broncs under the portable lights. A tailgate party set the stage for the evening, and the Wildcats never looked back. “I thought it was great,” said Wildcats coach Norbert Baharally. “When I looked across the field, the three bleachers were full of people and there were people behind us on the sidelines and lined up on the opposite side of the track. “There was a concession going ... I think it went over well. It was a good night for the community.” The Wildcats finish their regular season today with a 4 p.m. home game against the HJ Cody Lakers of Sylvan Lake. The Wildcats got three touchdowns from rookie Jeremy Kirk, two from Austin Rosland and one each from Garrett Burns and Lane Lyke. Frank van Ommeren
VOLLEYBALL Last Tuesday, the senior girls played volleyball at Innisfail. The Wildcats were victorious after teamwork and hard hitting brought the girls three straight wins — 25-14, 25-15 and 25-18. This past weekend, the senior girls travelled to Calgary to compete in the Bishop O’Byrne tournament. “The girls impressed me with their overall play and gained valuable experience from the tournament.” said coach Rachelle Campeau. “Although the Wildcats did not finish (in the medals), they showed that they have the capability of playing up to the tougher competition. Many of the games ended with close point scores of 25-22. “Our team faced some very tough competition. We played against larger populated schools in the Calgary area, including Bishop Grandin, St. Francis, Foothills Composite and Centennial High. “We also had the opportunity to play against Vincent Massey, a travelling 4A school from Winnipeg. Unfortunately, the girls learned the hard way how minor mistakes can make

or break the final outcome when faced with tougher competition.” With fatigue and injuries catching up with the Wildcats, the likes of Carly Armstrong stepped up for the Wildcats, Campeau said. The senior boys’ Wildcats also participated in the Bishop O’Byrne tourney. “We played against some very difficult 4A schools,” said Wildcats coach Jefferson McClung. “We played good and won some sets, but in the end we lost out of the tournament.” The senior boys played against CACHS (Central Alberta Christian High School) of Lacombe last week in a league match. “We played good against them, winning two out of the five sets,” McClung reported. “Each set was very close, only a few points separating the teams. Even though they won, we are looking forward to playing them again.” The senior boys will have a rematch against CACHS today in Stettler, with the senior girls playing the CACHS girls the same night, also in Stettler. On Monday night, the JV boys travelled to Innisfail, where the Wildcats added another victory to their solid season.
“The boys played well, said Wildcats coach Brady Armstrong. “However, we still have quite a bit of work to do.” The JV boys face HJ Cody (Sylvan Lake) today. Sylvan Lake hasn’t had a JV boys’ team in a few years. “We don’t know what to expect,” said Armstrong. “But we will bring our A game, and hopefully come back with another big win.” The JV girls don’t play until Oct. 17 in Stettler. SADD NEWS SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) has started up again at William E. Hay. The group meets on Thursdays at lunch and is always looking for new members. CROSS-COUNTRY The Stettler Wildcat cross-country runners compete in the zone competition today at Wetaskiwin. Andrew Kim, Corey Garbutt, Jennifer Taylor and Aaryn Lynham of Grade 12, and Nikyta Lachowsky and Alicia Nibourg of Grade 11, are in the mix. HONOUR ROLL William E. Hay held its honours breakfast yesterday morning for all the students who received an honours award from last year.

thought I would throw my two cents into the fire. Electrical safety is one of the areas that home inspectors concentrate on during an inspection. We go through the home, checking electrical outlets for incorrect wiring, tripping GFI’s, tripping AFC breakers and generally trying to make sure the house you are purchasing is safe for you and your family to live in with our modern electronic devices plugged in to every outlet available. One of the problems we have though is that houses built yesterday do not have to conform to the building codes of today. Older houses will not have arc fault breakers or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters unless they were added later. That also goes for ungrounded outlets and even old knob and tube wiring (although your insurance company may have something to say about that). You may want to keep that in mind if you are doing any renovations. If you do have an older house get an electrician to come in and make sure your house wiring is safe. Make sure that if you are doing renovations, qualified people are doing them for you and you have all the proper permits and then inspections are done. Other tips for electrical safety: • Routinely check your electrical appliances and wiring. • Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old and damaged appliance cords immediately. • Use electrical extension cords wisely and don’t overload them or use them for permanent wiring. • Keep electrical appliances away from wet floors and counters; pay special care to electrical appliances in the bathroom and kitchen. • Don’t allow children to play with or around electrical appliances, such as space heaters, irons and hair dryers. • Keep clothes, curtains and other potentially combustible items at least 3 feet from all heaters. • If an appliance has a three-prong plug, use it only in a three-slot outlet. Never force it to fit into a two-slot outlet or extension cord. • Never overload extension cords or wall sockets. Immediately shut off, then professionally replace, light switches that are hot to the touch, as well as lights that flicker. Use safety closures to childproof electrical outlets. • Check your electrical tools regularly for signs of wear. If the cords are frayed or cracked, replace them. Replace any tool if it causes even small electrical shocks, overheats, shorts out or gives off smoke or sparks. Another area of concern during “Fire Prevention Week” is wood-burning fireplaces and stoves. This is one area that most home inspectors are not qualified to inspect thoroughly. For this, you need someone that is WETT (Wood Energy Technical Training) certified. They will check clearances for you as well as ensuring your fireplace or stove is safe to use. This is something that you should do every year if you use your fireplace often. One final bit of advice is to go and check your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector right now … Dan Levia is the owner/ inspector of In-Focus Home Inspections, a Red Deer company and can be reached at info@ infocusinspections.com or 403-350-9697. THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT FIRE ZONE
Recruiting a key plank Continued from Page A7 “Scientific (fire) information has brought forward better ways to inform us as firefighters and as leaders to effectively fight the fires and promptly prevent the fires from happening.” Construction methods and the close proximity of homes in busy centres have contributed to highintensity residential fires, the Stettler chief said. “Fires are now able to spread from one house to three,” Dennis said. Fire-prevention activities help educate people and let them know that they can take action to prevent fires from happening and spreading to their neighbour’s houses, or vice-versa. “By limiting the amount of vegetation beside and around your house, and not storing firewood directly against your house and using asphalt shingles opposed to cedar shakes, all can impact the chance of a greater fire at your house and your neighbor’s,” Dennis said. “This year, we started a fire smart in your community, a program that’s designed for the wildland interface (such rural-type areas). Rochon Sands was chosen because of its geographical location. The houses are very close together, quite a distance from the fire department, a large grouping of trees and built in the side-hill lake situation. “We are hoping to spread to other communities around the lake area, and eventually that will move into the larger communities.” The Stettler region has been exemplary in its fire-prevention efforts, the chief said. “I’m pretty proud that we are one of the communities that have started doing this outside of the forest-protection area,” Dennis said. “We have to take it upon our shoulders and carry the cost of the fireprevention activities within our own budget. However, we think it’s important that we are doing these types of activities within the communities.” It’s been categorized as a moderate year for fighting in the Stettler region. “This year I wouldn’t say we had a lot of fires, meaning an average year,” Dennis said. “A fairly busy spring, typical fall, as far as wildland fires. Structure fires, pretty much the status quo. “We have been busy
training our personnel. Across the province, the most important activity that we had next to fire prevention is recruitment. Trying to find and maintain trained the volunteer firefighters at all four stations, including Stettler, Donalda, Big Valley and Byemoor, is our No. 1 focus this year. “We have a welltrained force. Within the paid part-time atmosphere, we don’t know who will be able
to come to every call. Our members are very well-trained for all types of situations that can occur. You never know what is going to happen — that is what makes it exciting and challenging. My job is to keep all our members trained and up to speed with all the new techniques (and) tools, and keep them outfitted so we can provide the best service we can to the community. It’s pretty rewarding and exciting.”

Lightning victorious in home-opener After opening the regular season with three straight losses, the Stettler Lightning bounced back at the mostopportune time Friday when they knocked off the Banff Bears 4-1 in their home-opener at the Stettler Recreation Centre. Ryan Graff’s goal midway through the opening period proved to be the winner, as the big Bashaw defenceman fired a wrist shot top shelf to give the Lightning a 2-0 lead. Scott Ternes, with an assist from twin brother Adam, gave the Lightning the early advantage. Linemates Kyler O’Connor and Jake Schwarzenberger, into an empty net, also scored for Stettler, which lost 7-5 to the Airdrie Thunder on Friday night. Simon Thieleman made 16 saves in the Stettler victory. The only goal he gave up was a shot from Per Neuburger that changed direction. The Lightning fired 36 shots at Banff goaltender Aaron MacKay. In Friday’s loss at Airdrie, the Lightning got three assists from D.J. Kistner, a second-year junior who has alternated between forward and defence. O’Connor, Schwarzenberger and both Ternes brothers each had a goal and an assist, while newcomer Dylan Houston netted the other Lightning goal. Jeff Skaley made 34 saves for Stettler, which trailed 6-3 after two periods. Aidan Crowther paced the Thunder with three goals and an assist. The Lightning were scheduled to vist the Blackfalds Wranglers on Tuesday night. This weekend, Stettler has two home games — on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. versus the Cochrane Generals and at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in a rematch with Airdrie.

Margaret “Mix” McCorkindale passed away on August 21, 2013 in her 100th year. Margaret was born at Red Willow Alberta on July 28th, 1914. She always said she started the First World War. Her parents were Martha and James Baird and she was the 6th of eight children. “Mix” a nickname given her by her mother which followed her all her life, married Gerald “Corky” McCorkindale in Wainwright Alberta on September 25, 1936. Mix spent the “war years” in Vancouver while Gerald was overseas for four years with the 4th Division - Signals RCCS. One child, a daughter, Jo-Anne was born in 1946 in Stettler, Alberta. Mix and Corky moved to Burnaby B.C. in 1956 after being hailed out on the farm at Red Willow, Alberta. They then moved to Pouce Coupe, B.C. in the early 70’s and were the proprietors of the Hillcrest Motel and Pouce Coupe laundromat. They moved back to the coast to Agassiz, B.C. for 17 years before returning to Pouce Coupe to be near the grandchildren in 1989. She resided in her own home until her passing. Mix was predeceased by her husband, Gerald in 1998, her parents and all her siblings. She leaves to mourn her daughter, Jo-Anne (Don) McDonald, grandchildren, Rae-Ann (Kevin), Neil (Deirdre) and great grand children Hannah and Amelia, her sister-in-law, Jean Young, brother-in-law, Ray Sales, plus many nieces and nephews.
Card Of Thanks BOYD The family of the late Bill Boyd takes this opportunity to thank our family, friends and neighbours for the cards, food, floral arrangements and memorial donations made in memory of our dad and grandpa. Thank-you to the staff and residents of Heart Haven, Stettler Hospital and Heritage House for the attention and friendship shown to Bill during the last year of his life. We appreciate the care given to Dad by Dr. Drummond over the last few years, Dr. Lockhat for the last months and the doctors in emergency who were there when he needed them. We are grateful to Verna Rock and Stettler Funeral Home staff for being so considerate of our needs and assisting us in planning the celebration of Dad’s life. Rev. John Crowdis and Rev. Mervyn Penfound lead a beautiful memorial service and Elaine Hennel shared her gift of music which was cherished by us. Tara-Lee and Matt gave a wonderful tribute to Grandpa Bill and the slide show put together by Kimberlee accompanied with Meghan singing to Rhonda Sylvester’s accompaniment was truly special. We had a delicious lunch provided by the Gadsby District Hobby Club. We feel so fortunate so be part of such supportive communities and will treasure all the hugs, stories and remembrances we have received. Thank-you.
