Agrim Centre building takes shape By Treena Mielke After years of behind-the-scenes planning, scheming and hoping, the directors of the Rimbey Agrim Centre are excited the trusses and steel for the building are here. “Let’s get started,” they are all saying, no doubt, ready to be on site watching when the first truss goes up and the action begins. “The trusses will be in this week and the building will soon start to take shape,” said director and building committee member Ken Whitelock. “We should see lots of manpower on site within a week.” Although action had been ongoing for some time behind the scenes the third phase of the centre was launched July 3 at the Rimbey Rodeo Grounds with an official sod turning ceremony. Represen-
tatives from Ponoka County, the Town of Rimbey and the Rimbey Agricultural Society were in attendance. The building committee, who continue to meet regularly, are grateful to these entities, not only for their attendance at the ceremony, but for their continued support and encouragement. “Although it seems somewhat like a daunting task, we are working diligently and consistently to make it become a reality.” Ponoka County, who has made no bones about its desire to help out Rimbey and the agriculture centre, contributed $1.2 million. CAO Charlie Cutforth says Ponoka County provided $1 million cash and purchased more land for project expansion.” Ponoka County Coun. Gawney Hinkley, who attended the sod turning, said “we love contributing to Rimbey and we
don’t have a problem contributing to agriculture anywhere in Ponoka County.” Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson also sees the centre as a positive for Rimbey, noting it will bring people in and provide a gathering place for residents to attend local events. The 60,000-square-foot Agrim Centre will include a riding arena, meeting space, boardroom, announcers box, concession and a grandstand to seat 900. The centre is to be multi functional and bring in spectators for various events as well as provide space for organizations such as 4-H clubs. The ag centre is to be built with an outside balcony. Builders will use green technology in the construction of a solar wall and rainwater will be used for the building’s non-potable water needs. Continued on page 3
Sheldon Ibbotson and Rick Pankiew, both running for mayor and each of the six town council candidates will have an opportunity to state their views and respond to questions from the audience at a political forum to be held at the community centre. Council candidates are incumbents Gayle Rondeel, Paul Payson and Jack Webb who are running against Einar Olsen, Dave Karroll and Matt Jaycox. The forum, to be chaired by David Cartledge of Toastmasters International (Red Deer) is to be held Oct. 16 beginning at 7 p.m. It is being sponsored by Rimbey Chamber of Commerce and Servus Credit Union. The two-hour forum will begin with the reading of the rules and regulations. Candidates will then voice their opening remarks at 7:15 p.m. Following a short break at 8 p.m. the audience will be invited to ask questions and the candidates will have the opportunity to respond. During the question and answer period, questions will be received from the floor in written or spoken form. The public will approach the microphone, identify themselves and address a question to one candidate. The public will then be given one minute to pose the question. Chamber of Commerce representatives will collect and read written questions and address the question to one candidate. The chairperson will use his discretion to balance written and spoken questions and each question directed at a candidate will be directed at another at the discretion of the chairperson. Answers to questions will be limited to two minute. At 8:45 the remaining written questions will be read and the candidates’ will give their closing summaries. The forum will end with the chairperson’s closing remarks.

Five terrible reasons to run for municipal office By Danielle Klooster, Special to Rimbey Review On this nomination day for the 2013 municipal elections in Alberta, I think it is apropos that I unleash a rant. Since I am not myself running, I feel a little bit freer to explore the use of my outside voice, and since this is what many councillors are actually thinking… here goes! Ever wonder what motivates a person to run for municipal council? Is it the fame? The glory? The outstanding pay? (If you run into anyone says they’re running for any of those reasons, you should immediately give them a V8 high-five to wake them from their pipe dream.) It seems that in many Alberta communities this year there are a record number of candidates for Council, as well as many mayoral hopefuls. I’ve heard a lot of different reasons for why people choose to run, many of them misguided and some even mendacious. Here are my top five bad reasons to run: “People are ready for change!” Newsflash: everyone says that, for every election. Sometimes it’s true and sometimes it’s just perception. Often times, when voters go behind that screen, they get a bit scared of change (which is natural) and they go for the known quantity. That aside, it is my opinion you just plain need a better reason to run. If the best you can do is “Hey, I’m new!”… I mean, come on. You need to understand budgets, financial statements, water, sewer, garbage, road construction, residential/ commercial/industrial development, the role of governance, Inter-municipal relations, by-laws, social and economic development and more. Have you done your homework on this stuff? Do you have INFORMED positions? Do you have proven leadership experience? Have you ever sat on a board? As a voter I need to know about what qualifies you for the job and what you stand for.
Simply representing “change” is woefully inadequate. Furthermore, as of the day you are sworn in, you officially cease being “change” and become part of the institution — it’s what you’re signing up for (pardon the poor grammar). And if you think that folks are magically going to like you better than the last group, think again. The moment you sit down to the council table, you officially become “them”. This I promise. “I’m going to clean house!” Uh, no you aren’t. If you envision a scenario where you walk into the municipal office and take over operations, fire a bunch of people, and generally stick your nose into administration’s business, you are sadly mistaken. If you want to manage your town or city, apply for the job. The CAO’s job is management; your role as a Councillor is governance. You don’t get to direct the staff. You are not the bylaw officer, the public works foreman or the HR Director. In fact, you have only one employee – the CAO. And guess what? In many communities, the CAO has an employment contract. You can’t just ditch this guy so you can take over running the place. Get a new guy and you still don’t have the right to manage the municipality, Besides, removal would take a majority vote of Council and would cost the rate payers a whole bunch of money. You don’t have to like the Town Manager or any of the staff but as a councillor you are legally bound to do things properly (spoiler alert: you’re going to take an oath on this if you get elected). If you intend to try to remove this person in MY community without FACTUAL basis and proper process, and that is part of your campaign platform, please know I will personally haunt you. “I’m going to fix the [insert pet peeve such as snow removal/pot holes/bike lanes] situation!” Another very misguided statement that reveals
a fundamental lack of understanding of how councils function. It’s an interesting dichotomy, of course, since candidates run as individuals (with some distinct exceptions in this particular election – but don’t get me started on that) but then they have to work as a team once elected to get anything accomplished. The truth of the matter is that you have NO POWER outside of council chambers. Even around the council table, your power extends only to the amount of influence you can leverage during debate, and to your (ONE) vote. I would add that, while it’s true that you have no power outside of chambers, you are ALWAYS a representative of the municipality. You can never overstep your bounds or ram through your personal agenda. You have a responsibility to consider all matters related to the strategic and fiscal direction of your municipality, and your job, as one member of a team, is to find ways to work together to make wise, informed, responsible decisions for the benefit of all. You are one of a group of decision-makers; no more, no less. You won’t have the ability to unilaterally wave a magic wand and fix all of the potholes (though people will think you can) and you cannot make a bunch of promises
about what you as an individual will do, because you have no power to act alone. “We have to get rid of the current corrupt/secretive/self-serving/ incompetent bunch!” Ah, the ever popular “anti” campaign… this tactic, sadly, is often successful. It resonates with coffee clatches and angry people. The problem is that while it may get you elected, it’s a poor foundation for being an effective mayor or member of council. The day after you “get rid” of the last bunch, you have to actually do something. Any ideas on what that will be? No? Hmmm, that’s really sad. It’s sad because you have a whole bunch of decisions in front of you; stuff that is already in motion, that the previous council that you thought was so useless was working hard to deliberate over and consider that perhaps you should have put some time into understanding. An individual with a personal grievance who runs for office is not just in danger of being an ineffective Councillor — these folks can be downright destructive. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: anybody can tear down; tell me what you are going to build. Continued on page 5

OPINION
Where there’s smoke there isn’t always fire Fire prevention week – Oct. 6 to 12—is here again! The week brings with it the usual onslaught of information about fires, and, of course, their causes and prevention. As a print media Treena Mielke type person, I have On The Other Side skimmed through the information, looking for the best little nuggets of wisdom to share with my readers. Prevent Kitchen Fires is the theme of fire prevention week this year. According to stats, two of every five home fires begin in the kitchen – more than any other place in the home, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Cooking fires are also the leading cause of home fire-related injuries. I read with interest the tips provided to prevent fires in the kitchen. Tips like stay in the kitchen when you are cooking, use back burners when possible, wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves and keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper and plastic bags away from the stovetop. All good; very good tips! I, however, due to first hand experience during which my ego got severely singed, could add another one. Do not, and I repeat, do not set your oven dial on self-clean when you have put a pot roast in it for supper and then leave the premises. If you do, I’m here to tell you, awful things will happen. First and foremost your roast will be burned beyond recognition. Second and equally important, you may come home to find a fire truck in your driveway and your stove sitting out in your back yard, smoke pouring out of the locked oven door. Though it was long ago and it was far away, I remember it well. It was a beautiful fall day; a crisp, clean good to be alive day. It was a day that I felt very much in control; organized, efficient and really quite clever! My to do list was in order and had not yet been lost and I even knew where my car keys and glasses were. My list read as follows: Put roast in oven, set oven on a slow timed bake so the roast will be tender and lovely for supper even though it is only a cheap pot roast. Take all three children for eye appointments in the city. Come home, finish making lovely supper with delicious roast. Think about what you will wear when you win the ‘homemaker of the year’ award. Well, it turns out John Steinbeck knew what he was talking about when he said ‘the best laid plans of mice and men don’t always happen.’ And whoever said ‘pride goes before a fall’ wasn’t that far out either. In defense of myself, the oven was new to me and my kitchen. And why did they use symbols and not words? How was I to know what the self-clean symbol was? Anyway, when the paperboy saw the smoke pouring out of the living room window he called the local fire department. And like the good firemen they were, they came and quickly hauled the offending stove out to the back yard, thereby displaying for all to see, every housewife’s worse nightmare, a whole bunch of dirt that had got there somehow.
With harvest season closing the annual Foodgrains harvest is at the forefront. I was mortified. When I walked into my kitchen after the nasty deed had been done I immediately stepped over all the laundry on the floor of the laundry room (another hidden sin) to fetch the broom. The men were kind. They didn’t laugh too much. And they didn’t joke about how I had taken burning a roast to a new level. Well, they didn’t do belly laughs, anyway. But to this day, if ever I happen to run across one

of those guys, they get this little smile on their lips and their eyes twinkle, when they figure out who I am. “You’re the one who put your oven on self clean with that roast in it, aren’t you? And then they chuckle and I don’t. And then I go home and pull out my stove and sweep the dirt up, just in case. You never know!

Five terrible reasons Continued from page 3 “I’m going to make fiscal responsibility my number one priority!” This may well be the most irresponsible thing I hear come from the mouths of candidates. If all you want to do is find ways to save people money, then let’s abolish property taxes right now and we can all go home. After all, what’s the point of even having taxes if the only thing we care about is not spending any money? My point is this: yes, fiscal accountability and responsible spending are very, very important. And no one likes paying taxes, me included. But the number one responsibility of the councillor is NOT fiscal responsibility — it is rather to build community infrastructure for future generations. Shame on you if in 5, 10 or 25 years there is no water or sewer capacity or the roads are falling to pieces or there are insufficient playgrounds and recreation opportunities because you were busy pinching pennies. Ultimately, there are good councillors and bad councillors in every community. Some mayors and councillors who should never be in office do get elected, and sometimes people are justifiably upset by actions and decisions. I get that. But I have yet to see a municipal council – at least in this province – that is a wholly evil empire. Can we at least agree to make informed decisions at the polls, instead of vilifying the entire group without, in many cases, even a basic understanding of the role, the decisions, the full story? How about those critical thinking skills, voters?

Okay, maybe it sounds like I am embittered by my council experience. Trust me, I am not. I LOVE this community, Love it. More than ever. Penhold is a fantastic community that has accomplished things that most people never imagined we could, despite serious obstacles. We are in good financial shape, have envious development stats every year, have a top-notch recreation facility, schools for K-12, great social programming and supports… I could go on for a very long time. I’ve immensely enjoyed serving on council and would recommend it to anyone — as long as your motives are right! Why should you actually run for Council? You should run because you wish to serve your community, to provide good leadership, to plan and build for the future. You should run because you have a contribution to make, ideas to be shared, passion that won’t abate and a commitment to do the right thing no matter what. You should run if you understand that you will have to sacrifice popularity and family time, and that you will have to sometimes make decisions that benefit the community as a whole but don’t benefit you personally. You should run if you want a better future for your grandchildren, and your grandchildren’s grandchildren. If any of the five terrible reasons I mentioned frame up your election campaign, take heart: it’s not too late. You can withdraw from the race now and free up a seat for people with the right motivation. Or you can reflect on your intentions and set a new course with a commitment to serve your community for the all the right reasons.

LETTERS TO EDITOR
The Rimbey Review, Oct. 8, 2013 7
Rimbey won’t flourish without local support Dear Editor, I am a soon to be multi business owner in the Town of Rimbey. The one thing that concerns this businessman regarding what is wrong here in our friendly international town is that this entire town has forgotten how to stay true to our roots. People notice the empty buildings in our town core yet they will spend $25 in gas to save $5 elsewhere. It makes no sense at all. It’s not just the people here, it’s business as well. I own a small I.T. Company. I am fully certified as an I.T. Professional by Mr. Bill Gates himself. I look after large businesses in Red Deer like The Galaxy Theater in Gasoline Alley and I am fully capable and have the equipment to look after every business server in this town, Yet 90 per cent of my services go out to Red Deer and surrounding areas like Lacombe and Ponoka. People, you want jobs here in town, services that entertain you, you want our store fronts filled with quaint tea shops and country crafts and antique shops. You have to support them. You do this by walking to a shop thereby saving $25 in gas or fuel and you shop local. What you don’t do is overflow current resources by offering free programming that competes with local business and then dump a ton of tax payers’ monies holding useless referendums that pit us against each other. Seriously do we need a wine tasting venue at our library. Is this even legal? Is our library licensed to serve alcohol and do the people serving it have training to serve alcohol? What are the legal ramifications to our town should someone get hurt or have an allergic reaction to what they are being served? The mother/daughter tea party was nice but the tea shop that recently closed across the street I’m sure could have benefited from the cessation of this program. Reference computers at the li-
brary, being used for gaming and checking email is hurting The Cave, and will soon hurt the Gaming Cafe that is up and coming. Arguments have been made that they fill a service for people that cannot afford the Internet. Yet I have observed kids playing games and chatting on Facebook. The Cave charges for this service and has invested personal money and resources. I myself am investing over sixty thousand dollars in computer equipment to rent by the hour and you get your computers for free along with your Internet service. Know that I will be checking regularly to insure these reference PC’s are used for reference only and I will be complaining bitterly when they are not. When I had to propose my new gaming cafe to the town I had to take considerations into mind. I contacted the youth center to see if I was taking away from any programming they had planned. I approached the recreation board to see if what I had planned was taking away from new and current programming. I was considerate to other effective programming and wanted to work side by side out of respect and consideration. Fact is the only solution is to scale back programming. Keep your core programs like kids after school kiddy movie night....and leave the business to businesses. Keep your library books intact and enjoy it before technology makes it obsolete. Fact is just stop and buy local and soon the stores will fill up with thriving businesses that translate to friendly competitive business that translates to savings for the consumer and employment opportunities for our workforce. Electing a new mayor and council will not change anything but who gets the pay checks. Change can only come about when we elect to change ourselves and our habits. Support your local businesses and local business will support you. Mark Steeves

Road Hammers shoot video at Rimbey racetrack By Treena Mielke The mud bogs at the Central Alberta Race Track was the perfect setting for The Road Hammers new music video appropriately called MUD and the rain only added to the attraction. Only a small crowd showed up at the racetrack for the filming of the video, but the film crew and the band seemed to enjoy themselves immensely. The Road Hammers posted a thank you to Rimbey on facebook and Margaret Malandruccolo, an award winning freelance filmmaker, who directed the film crew, said the shoot went very well. “It was fantastic,” she said. “The support was just phenomenal. When we drove in even though it was pouring rain there was about 40 trucks there (to help create the mud). We thought maybe there was something else going on.” Malandruccolo said the musicians are wearing beautiful white shirts at the beginning of the video and by the time it is finished they are completely covered with mud. Cory Kincaid, president of Central Alberta Raceways said the club was happy to accommodate the

Of course, we would have had a lot more fans if it wasn’t for the rain.” Kincaid, who drove the starter car for the mud bogs said the race had lots of stops and starts while the filming crew got the shots they needed. The Road Hammers went to Edmonton Tuesday to shoot another music video about a young photojournalist who follows the band around on their tour. The Rimbey Review’s freelance photographer Scotty Aitken, who was at the shoot, was invited to play the role of newspaper editor in the video. “I’d love to feature you in our video as the news editor,” said director Margaret Malandruccolo in an e-mail to Aitken. Aitken, however, declined the offer due to family commitments.

Art sale features artists of all kinds By Treena Mielke The Rimbey Art Club show and sale held in conjunction with Alberta Arts Days was a delightful potpourri of creativity from featured local artists as well as quilters and crafters from Kansas Ridge Quilters. President Sharon Johnston said she was pleased with the public support received at the show and sale and grateful to the town for co-hosting the hospitality goodies and the donors of the prizes for the toonie donation draws. “We truly appreciated all of our guests, near and far, who took their time out to come to our studio. It was wonderful to have the Kansas Ridge Quilters for their wonderful display including Pattie Moris’s world acclaimed quilts.” she said. Winning the lap quilt made by Deb Retzlaff of the Kansas Ridge Quilters was Sheila Cote. The Batik painting ‘Star Gazers’ by Dawn Nawrot was won by Penny
Geibelhaus. Vivian Busat won the two adult workshop registrations from the Rimbey Art Club. Sandy Taylor won the family photoshoot with photographer Tracy Davis of Mighty Pony Images. The acrylic painting poppies by S. L. Johnston was won by Taryn Hedstrom. Alberta Culture Days began in 2008 as Alberta Arts Day, a one-day event to recognize the value of Alberta’s arts and cultural communities. There were 100 events held in 30 communities across the province, and a flagship celebration at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary. Since then, it has expanded into a vibrant, three-day, province wide celebration that has helped inspire the creation of Culture Days - a pan-Canadian movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. ATB celebrates 75th birthday, donates $236,000 to local charities Edmonton – After a summer full of unofficial celebrations, ATB Financial officially turned 75 years young on Friday. To mark the occasion, one party wasn’t enough. So, we had 301 of them – all at the same time. At each ATB branch and agency in Alberta, from Airdrie to Wildwood, from Milk River to High Level, current and past ATB associates and customers got together to renew acquaintances, enjoy a refreshment, share some memories—and talk about the future. Then, at exactly 12:30 pm, at every ATB branch in Alberta, something really special happened. Each of ATB’s 171 branches announced a special $1,000 donation to the community organization of its choice. Our 130 agencies also joined in, donating $500 each to a deserving local cause. When you add it all up, that’s $236,000 donated to local charities in every corner of Alberta. It’s our way of saying thanks for 75 great years. Here are just a few examples of where and how
our investments will help Albertans. • The Alberta Avenue branch in Edmonton is supporting a much-needed kitchen renovation at Crystal Kids, which is dedicated to nurturing and supporting at-risk urban youth. Crystal Kids diverts children from criminal activity and addictions and protects them from hunger, abuse, and neglect. • The Calgary Walden branch is partnering with the Chaparral Community Association to help the High River Parent Link Centre. The donation will help provide school supplies and backpacks for children in High River. The High River agency is giving its donation to the Rowan House Emergency Shelter. • The Lethbridge Highlands Crossing branch is donating to the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association, which provides therapeutic instruction in riding and horse care to those with special needs. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Vote or regret Honest candidates wanted consequences Dear Editor, Thank you, George Brown, for your column of Sept. 24. You raise a number of important points concerning the upcoming municipal election. Democracy depends on an informed electorate, and it is our job as voters to know what each of the candidates will bring to office. Think of yourself as an employer hiring a group of people to do an important job for the next four years. What is each candidate’s track record for community service, volunteer time, and team work? How will they handle disagreement on council matters? What do they know about running a town? These questions need to be asked. An election isn’t about “vision”, self-made plans, or change for the sake of change. Take time to attend the candidate forum later this month. Ask questions. Get answers. Spend 20 minutes voting, or four years regretting you didn’t. Jan Boyarzin

Dear Editor With the upcoming Municipal elections in sight, I sincerely hope we can attract candidates with a strong background in honesty. It appears far too often that power begets corruption. READ ME
Dear Editor, I posted a letter a few weeks back regarding the disappearance of the apples off my tree. In lieu of the overwhelming response I received from the community, I feel compelled to write a follow-up letter. To everyone who came to me asking if I found out who ‘took’ them…yes, I did. The lady in question was led to believe, by someone other than me, that they were ‘up for grabs’ not realizing that the apples were that precious to me. She saw the letter in the paper and came to visit me, in tears, and was most apologetic for her actions. I was just so relieved to find out the real story and, turns out, she and I are on wonderful terms now. Not so much for the someone other than me, who did get a piece of my mind for assuming apples in my back yard would ‘just go to waste anyway’. In the end, new understandings were formed, a new friendship was made and I have been blessed – once again – in realizing what an outstanding community I have been proud to call home for fifty –one years! Problems, big or small, do bring people together! Thank you to everyone who visited or called, for your concern, your support and your gifts of apples! Not so dis-appled, or so disappointed anymore, Rieki Rondeel

Sparky’s Safety Jobs
Get You & Your Family to Safety
Read the story and then answer the questions. When Sparky was a puppy, he liked to help his mom bake. Eating dog biscuits made Sparky happy. Sparky’s mom gave him four important jobs to do in the kitchen. The first job was to use a biscuit cutter to cut bone shapes from the dough. Sparky’s other jobs were about safety. His second job was to watch the timer to make sure the biscuits didn’t burn. His third job was to stay three feet away from the stove so that he didn’t get hurt. His fourth job was to make sure that the biscuits were cool before eating them. The best part of making biscuits was sharing them with his friends!
Draw your house on the grid below so your family can plan TWO ways out during a fire. Know your exits!

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCTOBER 6-12, 2013
Stand by your pan, decrease accidents How often has the doorbell rung or a child interrupted you while you were cooking, causing you to forget about the chicken you left sizzling on the stove until the scent of smoke filled the house? If this scenario or a similar one sounds familiar to you, you may want to think about it a little more because it’s likely that you, a friend or family member has run the risk of having a dangerous fire. “So many times when we’re called to a cooking-related fire, the homeowners tell us they only left the kitchen for a few minutes,” says Ross Bennett, fire rescue officer with the Office of the Fire Commissioner. “But often a few minutes turn into several and then that turns into a disaster.” “I wish people understood just how quickly fires start and spread. Your life can be
turned upside down in the matter of minutes.” During Fire Prevention Week, Bennett and his colleagues are reminding Albertans about basic kitchen fire safety. Bennett stresses that homeowners should stay in the kitchen when they are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave the room even for a short period of time, turn off the stove. When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer to remind you. Ponoka Fire Chief Ted Dillon, says people need to turn pot handles to the inside of the stove and refrain from wearing loose clothing in the kitchen. Most cooking fire in the home involve the stove stop and grease fire are the most common. “That’s the biggest one,” said Dillon.
Candles also pose a danger in the kitchen. “People light candles in their kitchen eliminate odours and forget about them,” said Dillon. Even food not prepared in the home, such as take-out, needs to be handled with caution. “When you bring take-out home and put it in the oven to keep it warm, if that paper bag is to dry it can ignite,” said Donna Noble, fire prevention co-ordinator. The Office of the Fire Commissioner also suggests we keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a “kid-free zone” of three feet around the stove. What if, despite your best efforts, you have a fire in your kitchen? Bennett recommends to always keep an oven mitt and lid nearby. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan. Turn off the
burner and do not move the pan. To keep the fire from restarting, do not remove the lid until it is completely cool. If you have a fire in your microwave, turn it off immediately and keep the door closed. Never open the door until the fire is completely out. “Never pour water on a grease fire,” Bennett urges. “It might feel instinctive, but it will cause devastating damage and injury.” Above all else, if the fire does not go out or if you have any doubt about the fire, get out of the home and call the fire department. “A cooking fire can quickly turn deadly. I have seen too many homes destroyed and people killed or injured by fires that could have been easily avoided. Please heed these simple safety rules,” Bennett says. “Firefighters only want to be in your kitchen if you invite us for dinner!”

FIRE PREVENTION
Fire starts when attention stops An elderly woman was making fried chicken when the oil in her deep fryer ignited. She suffered burns to her face, arm, hand and foot while trying to put the flames out by carrying the pot to the kitchen sink.
Her apartment’s central smoke detection system was activated and when emergency crews arrived, residents were gathered in the lobby area. She was sent by ambulance to the nearest hospital and spent many months recovering in the burn treatment unit. The firefighters found the fire had been confined to the kitchen in the woman’s suite. They found melting damage to the microwave above the stove and smoke damage to the ceiling. The damage was minimized by the overhead sprinkler system that activated and extinguished the fire. Investigators determined the cause of the fire was overheated oil and damage was estimated to be $20,000. The woman’s injuries were caused when she was splattered by extremely hot oil while she carried the pot to the sink. “This is a compelling example of the way many fires occur across Alberta,” says Trent West, Alberta’s Fire Commissioner. “In fact,” he says, “cooking fires continue to be the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries in Alberta.” It takes just a few minutes for cooking oil to
reach a temperature greater than 200° Celsius and catch fire. You can choose a temperature-controlled electric skillet for frying or a deep fryer which is factory-set to a maximum of 200° Celsius to prevent overheating cooking oil. If you are distracted while cooking, turn the heat off and move the pot or pan to a safer spot on the stove before you leave the kitchen. That rule applies no matter what you are cooking. Stay in the kitchen when food is frying, grilling, simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling. If you leave the kitchen, even for a short time, turn off the stove. Check on your food regularly and use a timer to remind you when your food is done cooking. Stay alert. If you are sleepy, fatigued or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, it is best to avoid cooking. Remember to use the back burners of the stove whenever possible and turn pot handles inward to help avoid knocking over pots. Keep combustible items away from the stovetop. Avoid wearing loose fitting clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking. Clean food and grease from stovetops. Keep the burners, exhaust fan filters, ducts and oven clean. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from spreading and possibly burning you or your clothes. “What the basic rule is, if it starts to BUYING OR spread get out,” said Donna Noble, PonoSELLING? FIRE PREVENTION
Fire Prevention Week educates to save lives Fire Prevention Week, just like the fire service itself, has a long and proud history. This special week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire. The tragic 1871 conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. Every year, fire and life safety educators across Canada bring important safety messages during Fire
Prevention Week to their communities to help prevent fires, deaths, injuries and property damage. The Office of the Fire Commissioner, in partnership with emergency services across the province, recognizes Fire Prevention Week as an important awareness campaign that teaches Albertans about fire prevention and safety. “Fire safety is not just diring Fire Prevention Week, it’s year round,” said Donna Noble, Ponoka’s
NOTICE OF ELECTION LOCAL AUTHORITIES ELECTION ACT (SECTIONS 11, 35, 46) LOCAL JURISDICTION: COUNTY OF WETASKIWIN NO. 10, PROVINCE OF ALBERTA Notice is hereby given that an election for Councillor will be held in Division 5. Voting will take place on the 21st day of October, 2013 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Voting subdivisions and polling stations located in Division 5 are the Mulhurst Bay Legion, the Falun Community Hall and the Lakedell Agricultural Centre. fire prevention co-ordinator. During the 10-year period between 2003 and 2012, the annual number of fires reported to the Fire Commissioner averaged 5,283. These fires resulted in more than $3.1 billion in property losses in total. There were an average 27 deaths per year and 235 injuries. Most fire injuries occurred in residential properties (79 per cent) including one- and two-family dwellings and apartments. It is clear that most fire deaths and injuries happen in places where Albertans feel the safest - their homes. “Fire don’t pick noon or two in the afternoon, they can hit at two in the morning,” said Ted Dillon, Ponoka’s fire chief. “Fire are more likely to happen when you’re not prepared.” To keep family members safe, each household should have and practice a home escape route, complete with two
strategies from each room. “Practice it at all time of the day,” advises Noble. Noble says people should always sleep with their door closed to act as a fire barrier and, if someone isn’t able to exit a room they need to fly something unusual from a window, such as a pair of pants, to warn firefighters they’re there. The major causes of home fires in Alberta and elsewhere are cooking, smoking, electrical and arson/vandalism. These and other statistics tell us how fires start and help us monitor trends over time. We can learn from fires that have happened in the past and try to prevent similar fires from happening in the future. In Alberta, Fire Prevention Week is supported by the Office of the Fire Commissioner and local fire and emergency services.

Technology helps students focus on learning By Amelia Naismith The world is becoming more technologically advanced by the second, and students need to be educated on those matters using the same tools they’re learning about. An Alberta education initiative— 21st Century Learning — is a driving force behind the idea students need to the technologies in order to analyze new situations and advance their minds’ critical thinking capacity. However, in order to properly educate the students, the teachers themselves must first understand the emerging technology. Enter the 21st Century Learning Symposium — teachers teaching teachers. The symposium took place Sept 26 and 27 at the Terrace Ridge School in Lacombe and was attended by 500 teachers and other staff members of Wolf Creek Public Schools, as well as other districts. The focus of many of the sessions was training the teachers on how to use the technology as well as helping them to understand how it can be used in the classroom. Universal Design for Learning is the idea students should have the opportunity to access and complete their assignments on a number of different mediums in order to engage themselves in a way that best presents their skills and knowledge. “I had a kid in Grade 5, he was a nightmare. He wouldn’t do his work, he wouldn’t engage,” said Assistive Technology Tips and Tricks presenter Jay Cottell. Cottell designed a 5-week electric model car assignment for his students. Because it was hands on the student who previously refused to participate in class was done the model in three days and spent the remaining four weeks helping his classmates. “You have to give it (lessons) to kids in multiple ways and allow them to give it back to you
in multiple ways,” said Cottell. To Cottell, 21st Century Learning is about awareness, willingness and effort on the teacher’s part. “The more you do that meets everybody’s needs, everyone benefits.” Technology was the main focus of the session, but not the main focus of the curriculum. “It’s about supportive learning, and teachers need to be inclusive,” said Cottell. Supportive learning using technology doesn’t always mean high-tech gadgets. The assistive learning continuum adheres to the idea low-grade technology helps students focus on their studies. Cottell uses devices such as “wiggle seats” or Thera-band, a rubber piece
stretching between the legs of a desk for students to play with on a subconscious level to keep them engaged when the activity isn’t very hands on. Programs including Cloud On — similar to Microsoft Office and Youtube are becoming prominent in classrooms when it comes to assignment styles.
Sharing a class Youtube account and creating videos for assignments will allow students to continue learning outside the classroom and easily share their findings. However, in passing at the symposium, at the Wolf Creek Public Schools staff member made the comment that, while technology and the teaching benefits involved are “cool”, such as the apps that lower the reading grade level of text and assignments the students deal with, they may also be harming students in the long run. The staff member wondered if more emphasis should be placed on the fact so many students without learning disabilities are behind in grade level abilities in today’s society.

Education needs revival with creativity By Amelia Naismith In order to further engage students in the classroom, educators need to accept creativity has a place within the schools four walls. At the Wolf Creek Public Schools 21st Century Learning Symposium, Sept. 26 and 27 at the Terrace Ridge School in Lacombe, teachers learned how they could re-introduce creativity as something acceptable in schools through debate and creative activities that brought joy back into learning. You Are Creative presenter Dean Shareski feels the concept of creativity has been given a stigma when it comes to academics. “When people say that, they feel it’s for special people or certain times of the day.” In schools, creative time is often reserved for when there’s spare time, or used as a treat on Friday afternoons when the excitement of the impending weekend makes
students too excited to focus in the traditional sit-in-a-desk-and-learn manner. “I hope we don’t have to convince people creativity is important,” Shareski added. Shareski grew up never believing himself to be a creative person until technology allowed him to redefine what the word meant to him. He feels word now needs a facelift in the academic environment. “I think creativity is like a muscle. It’s something you have to exercise, it has to be a habit,” said Shareski. “I also think we as teachers need to do a much better job of modeling if we indeed believing in something called life-long learning,” he added. Shareski feels there are two major barriers when it comes to creativity being accepted as an important part of the learning process. “We’re still pretty grounded in the idea that schools are about knowing stuff.
And knowing stuff doesn’t always lend itself to creativity.” What creativity means and looks like is a personal vision and therefore can’t be measured, making it hard to grade using conventional school rubrics. The second barrier is technology can be daunting and time consuming, especially when glitches amp frustrations. However, with companies taking those reactions into account programs are being created to be user-friendly to encourage quick creativity that fits well with the time constraints of the school atmosphere. While some of the teachers were hesitant on the idea of introducing some of the creative technology programs into their classrooms for fear of inappropriate images coming through the commuter most embraced the new experiences the programs could bring.

Diamond likes small town life By June Norvila A father of three, Richard Diamond and his family have lived in Bentley for over 10 years. During that time he says, “Property taxes have doubled. We have priced ourselves out of being an affordable community and need to get this under control.” Richard Diamond Diamond has been a retail manager, worked construction, and currently works in the oil patch. “I love living in a small quiet town,” Diamond says. He moved to Bentley from Calgary after having left Red Deer. “Walking down the street, having people wave and say hello is such a refreshing change. People live here because of the atmosphere and surroundings.” “My family (and I) use the parks, the library, Young talent: Eight-year-old Sammy Swanson is one of the children participating in art workshops held at the art room at the Rimbey Community Centre. and enjoy when Bentley (fair) days comes around. We do use the arena, but certainly wish it was a better structure. It would be awesome to replace it and showcase the Generals better. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening.” “The Highway 12 bypass is a sore spot with a lot of people. Here again is an issue where most people are unsure what’s actually happening.” A big issue with Diamond is the fact that the town now collects franchise fees on some utility bills. “Residents seem to be in the dark about (town) planning and policies.” “Currently I’m injured and disabled, so I have lots of time to dedicate to the position (of town councillor). I would like a council atmosphere of actually listening to what the residents want, and be more open about the future and planning.“ “Bentley has a lot of potential. We need to show that this town is open for business and attract consumers and entrepreneurs here. This is a great small town to live in: let’s extol the virtues of small town life, and attract people with a sense of community spirit.”

Howard running for second term By June Norvila This time when Butch Howard decided to throw his hat into the political arena he knows what to expect. For the past three years Basil (Butch) Howard has been a first-term Bentley town councilor. He and his wife Linda have resided in Bentley for 21 years and Butch has worked at Lacombe County for Butch over 30 years and is presently employed in the operations department. As a town council representative he serves on the Lacombe Regional Fire Services Association, acts as the liaison to the Bentley Fire Department, and sits on the pubic works committee and municipal planning commission. “The last three years sitting on town council has indeed been an honour and a learning experience,” says Howard. “I am proud of the things we have accomplished: our library renovations, arena repairs thanks to assistance from the local Kraft Hockeyville Committee and Lacombe County, and construction start-up of our new fire hall (a joint project between the town
of Bentley and Lacombe County).” He sees priorities for Bentley as development of land for housing, furthering repairs to the town’s aging infrastructure, and keeping Bentley a safe and friendly community. Howard wants Bentley to thrive and grow residentially, commercially and industrially, without destroying its Howard small town appeal. “I have enjoyed talking to the residents of Bentley and listening to their concerns as well as getting positive feedback when their concerns have been addressed,” he says. “With a better understanding of the inner workings of municipal government I look forward to (serving Bentley residents for) the next four years and the many possibilities for the growth and betterment of the Town of Bentley. I will uphold my promise to the citizens of Bentley to listen to their concerns and be their voice on council. I encourage everyone to let their voice be heard on October 21st. It’s your town, it’s your community!”

This election “I put my name out there because somebody has to do something,” Williams said. “If elected I will push for growth and change, and if there is a council that truly supports it, I will do everything in my power to make it happen,” Williams stated. “I have no experience in an elected office, but am willing to give it a try.” Williams admits he doesn’t like crowds, but would welcome a forum so issues could be brought

Davey enters election for second try Submitted by Pam Davey My name is Pam Davey and my family and I have lived in Bentley for five years. I have more than ten years management experience and am presently self-employed. In the past I volunteered at the Bowden Institution, Pam Davey helped with work projects in Africa and was treasurer for a Scout group. My family and I love Bentley and the people we have met. We want to continue living here but are alarmed and saddened by our town not moving forward while other communities thrive and grow. When you drive down main street you may understand why I decided to run for town council again: empty buildings, businesses for sale, existing businesses struggling to make ends meet. If elected, my number one priority would be to help our business sector and to establish the infra-

structure needed for future development. This is not an option any more, but a must for the survival of our town. Secondly, the dynamics of our town is changing. We have younger families moving into Bentley and I want to keep them here: they are our future. A recreation board could bring in much-needed programs and facilities for our children, youth, families and seniors, thus building on community spirit and family values. Thirdly, establish open communication and trust. I am here to serve you! I want town council to be accountable for how our hard-earned tax dollars are being spent. I want the community to be included and aware of decisions made by town council and why. We have some very good people with a vision for our community running in this election. We have a choice to vote like we always have or to vote for those who want more for Bentley. I urge you to vote for those who wish to move our community forward.

CONNOLLEY
Those we love don’t go away. They walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, Forever in our hearts so dear.
Kenneth ‘Ken’ George Connolley of Rimbey, Alberta, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Acute Care on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at the age of 64 years. Ken was born on April 5, 1949 in Berwyn, Alberta to Annie and Harold Connolley. His career spanned many years working extensively in road construction across Alberta and B.C. Ken completed many projects, such as the development of the new town site for Grande Cache, as well as the supervision of the construction of the Deerfoot Trail exchange in Calgary. Ken was Foreman for the Town of Rimbey for many years, and served one term as Town Councilor. Ken was the owner and operator of K & D Bobcat and Trucking. One of his last projects was the building of the heliport at the Rimbey Hospital. Ken was an avid outdoorsman, participating in activities such as hunting and fishing, and operating every recreational vehicle known to man! His motto was: ‘the family that plays together, stays together.’
~With Love Mom, Dad, Jacey and Karsen
Jessica Teeuwsen Hartford February 1991 - October 1999 The night I held you in my arms When life had slipped away I gave back to God my angel Though in my heart you’d stay He took you home where you belong But not away from me He’ll hold you in his arms of love Till my soul again is free A single hour has not gone by Without a loving thought of you My aching arms and broken heart Your spirit guides me through To hold you in my arms again As though we weren’t apart I do it every day, sweet girl As I hold you in my heart Forever loved and missed Mom, Dad and Paul
“Ken, although gruff around the edges, was a teddy bear inside. He was loved greatly and will forever be missed. He is now at peace!” Ken will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife, Colleen; his son, Darren of Rimbey; his daughter, Shari (James Benoit) of Rimbey; and his precious granddaughter, Bailey. He also leaves to mourn his four brothers, Gilbert (Edie) of Olds; David (Jean) of Berwyn; Eddie (Shirley) also of Berwyn; and Gordon (Lorraine) of Bentley; as well as his brother-in-law, David (Susan) Kennedy of Innisfail; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, and many cherished friends. Ken was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Annie. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Ken’s Life was held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rimbey on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Mr. Dave Mulligan officiating. Interment followed at 2:30 p.m. in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Dare to Look! c.2013, Ripley Publishing $28.95/$32.95 Canada 256 pages You love playing with dogs, throwing sticks for them to retrieve, wrestling with them on the floor. You love their soft fur and their goofy grins and there’s nothing better than snuggling with a dog on a cold night. Yep, it’s great that you love dogs because you’ll need two of them if you want a good challenge: a double-dog dare is practically required when you read Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Dare to Look! It takes a daring kid to look at a book with eerie, scary things in it, but that’s what you’ll find inside here. Learn how Canadian artist Maskull Lasserre created a skull out of a pile of old books. Find out about the Swiss actor who becomes an evil clown, or read the mystery of the corpse bride and decide if she was human once — or not. Bravery is absolutely necessary for even looking through this book because you’ll see pictures of a Shark Whisperer, a jellyfish lake, and an alligator that goes fishing with nothing but his teeth. And then — if you’re really brave, you can make plans to visit the Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada and see real piranhas and a giant octopus. Would you put yourself in danger to get to school? If you lived in the Xinjiang Uygur region of China, you would: kids there have to walk a narrow path on the sheer side of the mountain to get to class. Would you have the guts to try extreme skiing, crack climbing, or camel-jumping? There are people who do — and more — but don’t try that at home. In this book, you’ll learn about a man with two mouths, a pig with two faces, people with unusual tattoos, and others who’ve swallowed more than just food. You’ll learn about the assassination of a president and snakes on motorcycles, read back-fromthe-dead stories, and visit a museum for real dummies. And yes, you’ll even read about dogs: bike chain dogs, a dog with his nose missing, surfing dogs, dogs that get married, and one that got into a stick-y situation. You’ll read about it… if you dare… What kid doesn’t like knowing about weird, eerie oddities? Even the most reluctant reader does, which is why Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Dare to Look! is the
perfect book to have in your house. Yes, it’s true that the Ripley’s folks do these big, gorgeous books every year, and they’re always filled with fun-to-know facts, full-color pictures, jaw-dropping feats, and squirmy things. This latest entry in the series is a little different: with this book in-hand, kids can download an interactive app to enhance their read-
ing. They’ll get footage, more info, backstories, and more. Who wouldn’t like that? Meant for nine- to 15-yearolds, I don’t see any reason why older kids and adults wouldn’t like looking through this book, too — so go ahead, be pro-active and grab it. Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Dare to Look! is a book your kids will be doggin’ you to find anyhow.
