Raising the alarm in Clayton Heights A rash of burglaries has Surrey RCMP’s District 4 warning residents to be aware

JENNIFER LANG PHOTO

Community Safety Officer Dennis Bell says thieves are using remote controls to open garage doors in Clayton Heights, where residents are experiencing a rash of break-ins.

By Jennifer Lang Thieves are finding easy pickings in Clayton Heights, where there has been a rash of burglaries from homes, cars and garages. In many cases, the culprits aren’t even having to force their way in. Police have seen an increase over the past several weeks, with a few incidents taking place each night on the Surrey and Langley side of 196 Street in the Clayton Heights area. Last Thursday, the Surrey RCMP started hand-delivering a community alert, warning residents about the burglaries, and asking them to be extra vigilant. Staff Sgt. Martin Blais of the Cloverdale/Port Kells district office said many residents are

leaving garage doors unlocked, allowing easy access to vehicles and other valuables inside their garage and homes. “They are stealing everything they can find in the vehicle and the garages, including vehicles if the keys have been left in,” he says. Cheques and remote garage door openers have also been stolen, Blais adds. “People need to remove them from vehicles left outside.” Even more concerning is the fact that many of the crimes are taking place while residents are at home, compelling police to urge the public to step up anti-theft measures and change habits. Residents often forget to lock their garage doors – and the interior doors leading to the rest of

the town home or carriage house, providing thieves free rein. Burglars have been loading up on food, especially frozen meat, tools and sports equipment, according to Community Safety Officer Dennis Bell, who’s been doing follow-up with residents who have been hit. The thefts are mostly occurring between 10 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the area bordered by 64 and 74 Avenues, between 188 and 196 Streets in Surrey, as well as in Langley. He says thieves are casing alleyways in the high-density rural enclave, where homes are close together and often have residents in carriage homes and various rental suites sharing one address.

Site works bad for business Nearby road and utility construction takes a big bite out of donair shop’s bottom line

By Jennifer Lang A months-long roadworks and utilities project at Cloverdale West Village is creating a big headache for the owner of a local donair shop. Aziz Hamo of Shannon Donair at 17581 57 Avenue says business has dropped in half in the past few weeks, as customers stay away. “The construction keeps people away from the area and sometimes blocks the road,” he said. “It’s affected my business.” There’s also less available parking, says Hamo, who adds he wouldn’t be worried if the interruption was only going to last a few

days, but nearby businesses were warned in July the project will last upwards of six months. The site of the former Cloverdale Mall is being developed for a multi-phase residential and retail project spearheaded by the Surrey City Development Corporation and Townline Housing Solutions, in collaboration with the Cloverdale Legion on phase one. Offsite roadworks on 57 Avenue began early last month, introducing heavy machinery, flagging crews and giant pylons that have been placed on the north side of the road between 175 Street and

the Cloverdale bypass. The pylons are needed to prevent people from wandering onto the work site, according to project manager Pat Bickerton of B&B Contracting, the company creating new roads, sidewalks and utilities infrastructure so the long-awaited Cloverdale West Village project can get started in 2014. “The road isn’t blocked. The road has been open to traffic,” Bickerton said, adding there are no plans to shut down any roads while work progresses. When contacted by The See PROJECT / Page 6

Bullying: what have we learned? I

Assessing how far we’ve come – and still need to go – when it comes to making the internet nicer

s the world a safer place for kids since Port Coquitlam teen Amanda Todd killed herself on Oct. 10, 2012 after posting that heart-wrenching video seen around the world? No, but we have learned a few things since. We’ve learned, for example, that the internet can be a rough, cruel world for kids unless they are taught how to protect themselves and their privacy — and we know that the internet is a powerful tool for ruining someone’s reputation. We’ve seen that vulnerable girls and boys are easily exploited online by voyeurs who lure

them with false names and post their pictures and videos, sometimes with devastating consequences. We learned, as well, that rape culture is so deeply engrained in our society that Canadian university students didn’t see anything wrong with frosh week chants about sex with underage girls until authorities found out and put a stop to it. We’ve learned that it’s easy to troll the internet for photos and then post them, without consent, as a Facebook dating chat room did with a picture of Rehtaeh Parsons (the Nova Scotia teen who committed suicide

after photos of an alleged gangrape were posted). Simply put, laws are inadequate for dealing with meanness and stupidity on the web. Even Port Coquitlam couldn’t find a way to legislate against bullying. But there has been some action, too. B.C.’s ERASE Bullying website, available during the school year, provides resources for families with bullying concerns, and administrators and school counsellors are being trained to identify and support at-risk youth. The Kids Help Phone got more publicity about its services for kids and School District 43

has a new digital responsibility policy for teachers, students and parents working on the web. Even workplace bullying has received a higher profile in the year since Todd’s death, with a new Workplace BC website addressing the issue, and the BC Coroner’s Service studied youth suicide this fall and recommended more collaboration and resources. Will all this talk prevent another Amanda Todd situation from occurring? Maybe not, but we can no longer have ignorance as an excuse.

To the editor; The Cloverdale Terry Fox Run was hosted at the Cloverdale Legion Branch 6 on Sunday, September 15. The weather cooperated as 157 participants took part in the 33rd Annual Terry Fox Run. There were also 70 volunteers which included many Legion and Ladies Auxiliary members, the Clayton Heights Jazz Band, and cheerleaders from Seaquam High School. The total amount raised by the Cloverdale run was $13,392.05 which included silent auction items of $3,615! We would like to say a huge thank you to the local businesses, as most of the items in the auction where donated by merchants in Cloverdale. Food was served up by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. There were face painters, a clown making balloon animals for the children, merchandise for sale, as well as Kim Seale from Jack FM as our MC. It was a wonderful event, and we look forward to a bigger and better event next year!

The elections will also include adding more members to the association’s roster. “So far, we have a really strong membership and counting,” he said. Bola invites residents to bring their concerns, suggestions and positive input for the association, which will then bring those forward to city council. One of the association’s major concerns is local infrastructure and the speed of new residential development taking place in Cloverdale, which has doubled in population over the past decade. The association acts as a collective voice to city council, giving residents a say on issues affecting their community. The society formed in 1978 to deal with issues that affect the well-being and development of the community. It’s is back on its feet and ready to tackle issues that are important to Cloverdale residents, thanks to a successful renewal drive.

Cops offer free locks Last week’s Clayton Heights community alert (see story ‘Raising the Alarm in Clayton Heights,’ page one) went up just as the Surrey RCMP and its partners launched the Protect It, Lock it, Keep it campaign preventing vehicle crime. To Dec. 2, steering wheel locks will be offered free to people who drive older model vehicles that are the top target for thieves in Surrey: the Honda Civic (1990-2000), Honda Accord (1990-1997) and the Ford F-Series (1998, 2004-2006.) Vehicle crime represents 36 per cent of all property crime in Surrey, says Surrey RCMP Office in Charge, Bill Fordy. Prevention steps include using an anti-theft device, parking in well-lit areas near pedestrian traffic, removing all valuables and belongings, including valet keys. Don’t keep your spare keys in your vehicle, never leave your keys unattended – keep them with you at all times, such as at the gym, never leave your vehicle unattended while it’s idling, and keep your garage door opener out of sight or take it with you. Thieves will drive around trying garage door openers, hoping to find one that will open, says Bell, who points out the sound of a garage door opening in the middle of the night won’t necessarily be met with suspicion in homes with multiple tenants. He suggests residents keep their garage door openers with them, or locked in the glove box, out of sight of preying thieves. On a ride-along Monday morning, Bell stops outside an open garage in an alley

lined with closed garage doors, hops out of the car, and knocks on the back door of the home. A man cradling his infant son comes outside, and returns to the alley with Bell to inspect the open garage door – which was a surprise. It hadn’t been left that way. He tells Bell this seems to happen about once a month but he didn’t know why it kept happening. Bell showed him how to lock the garage door by pressing the ‘lock’ button on the control panel, a simple but effective step.

Reporter, Bickerton had not spoken with Hamo, however he would be willing to do so. However, he suspected the matter would be more appropriately addressed by City Hall. The project is on schedule, meaning there may be no immediate relief for Hamo. The married father of two girls fears he won’t be able to pay his bills if the disruption continues. “I want to know

who’s going to cover what I’m losing this month,” he said. Hamo spent eight months and about $25,000 on renovations before opening Shannon Donair in August 2011. Before that, he worked as a delivery person for Aaron’s Restaurant, saving up for a business of his own. He’d like financial compensation for his lost business, but doesn’t know where to turn. “I hope the city

The interior garage door should also be locked at all times, he adds. The Clayton Heights community alert contains a list of steps residents can take to prevent home burglaries and reduce the likelihood their home will be targeted. For more information, visit the Surrey RCMP’s website at www.surrey.rcmp.ca, or visit the office at 5732 176A Street. will do something.” A call to the Office of the Mayor’s communications department was not returned by presstime. Hamo isn’t the only business owner complaining about the project, particularly about the lack of parking as a result. “Yes, there is a real issue,” said Paul Orazietti, executive director of the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association, describing Hamo’s

concerns as “totally legitimate.” Construction and lack of parking is enough to keep people from driving into the historic town centre, Orazietti said. “People are impatient, and they have a predisposition to not stopping because the area is packed,” he said. “It is disruptive,” Orazietti said. “Is there legal recourse? Not that I’m aware of.”

By Jennifer Lang That vicious late September rain storm has forced the Bose corn maze to close down for the season sooner than expected. It’s bound to be disappointing news for anyone planning to get lost in the Bose Corn Maze in Cloverdale this season – and devastating for the family that operates it each late summer and early fall. The Sept. 28 rainstorm destroyed more than half the maze, leaving the Bose family with no alternative but to close the attraction two weeks early. “It flattened about half of the maze, to the point where you cannot see where the trails are
