Celebration marks Pass’s 50th BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

About 300 people attended the 50th anniversary celebration for the Kootenay Pass, held on Sunday afternoon at the top of the Highway 3 pass between Creston and Salmo. Organized by the Creston Museum, with the assistance of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Yellowhead Road and Bridge (YRB), the event included historical displays and a commemorative ribbon-cutting, which briefly stopped traffic.

“We find excuses to make local history fun and enjoyable,” said museum manager Tammy Hardwick. Cars lined up for the first crossing on Oct. 13, 1963, totalled 2,700 — the creation of the all-weather route was a significant event. “That really shows what it meant to them back then,” said Hardwick. “This was a good opportunity to showcase that.” During speeches by elected officials and others, Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie explained that the Ktunaxa people followed game trails

along that route hundreds of years earlier. “We are also in their home,” he said. “If it was not for those animals, we would not have access to this territory.” Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall followed Louie, expressing her appreciation for the economic benefits, and also reflected on the wildlife. “The most magical trip has been the time I have to stop and allow the caribou to take the time to cross the road,” she said. If public acclaim had a cash value, Gary and Susan Snow would be laughing all the way to the bank. Their business, Tabletree Enterprises, won a World Juice Award in 2012 in Barcelona, Spain, where its black cherry juice was named best pure juice. This year, red apple juice was one of two finalists for best new nectar or juice product. Tabletree didn’t win, but its owners could only see the bright side of being short-listed. “We came in second for best new juice in the world and not too many folks can say that and mean it tonight,” Gary said after the announcements were made in Cologne, Germany, on Oct. 3. “And two Canadians coming in first and second in the world is something to be proud of. “We’ve talked with some incredible folks from all around the world and made some contacts that will be very helpful to us as Tabletree grows.” Now in their fourth year producing juice with a proprietary method of their own design, the Snows admit the attention has been unexpected and overwhelming. “Last year, we thought that maybe the award was kind of a fluke, that judges were trying to give a boost to a small new business,” Susan said before the couple left for Germany, where the World Juice 13 conference was being held. “But a second nomination is just too much to comprehend.” See TABLETREE, page 5

Second March Against Monsanto running Saturday BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Creston Valley residents get another chance to protest against global giant Monsanto on Saturday at 3 p.m., says local organizer Karolyn Whitford. “Our protest march and rally will be co-ordinated with marches on six continents in 36 countries around the world,” said Whitford. “More than 250 cities and towns are expected to participate and last spring Creston really showed what a small community can do.” Nearly 200 people marched along Canyon Street in May in an event that drew people of all ages and backgrounds. Some drove in from Cranbrook and Nelson to Creston, which was thought to be the smallest community in Canada to participate. “We really showed that local people care about food production and food security issues, and that genetically modified foods are not the answer,” she said.

“The energy at the march was very strong, and the majority of marchers seemed to agree that the more people became educated about genetically modified foods the sooner Canada will join the large number of countries that have labelled or banned the untested and risky ‘substantially equivalent’ GMOs.” Whitford, a mother of four young children, said she has become an activist because she can’t just sit back and not work to make a better future for her family. She is also organizing other local events, including a December visit by nationally known scientists. “Sunset Seed has generously allowed us to use their parking lot as our rallying point on Saturday,” she said. “If anyone would like to speak at the event they can call me at 250-428-0782.” Protesters will march down Canyon Street to 10th Avenue, then return to the Sunset Seed location, Whitford said.

Wynndel Coffee House in need of volunteers BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Lorne Eckersley

MYSTERY — Amanda Cannon and her team at New Life Furniture and Recycling are trying to

unravel a mystery that came as part of a recent donation to the store. The framed print (top left) depicts a scene in which Admiral Nelson dipped his finger into a glass of Port to sketch out his plans for the imminent Battle of Trafalgar. Inside the frame’s backing is a sports page from a 1922 Vancouver Sun. On the opposite side of that is (top right) a beautiful print, possibly a lithograph. The value? That’s anyone’s guess at this time.

One of Creston Valley’s longrunning musical traditions needs help to make sure it carries on. The Wynndel Coffee House has had to cut back its season as it struggles to put together a volunteer roster for evenings that remain popular with musicians and patrons. This season, coffee houses will be held every second Saturday, November through April. Previously music fans were treated to local and visiting talent from October through April. “There are lots of small jobs involved — everything from setting up chairs to tending the door to collect fees (only $3 per person and $5 per family), helping in the kitchen (no qualifications required), putting away chairs — we just need a few reliable people to know these things will get done,” said volunteer John Rimmer. Rimmer often emcees the popular evenings — about 80-120 people come out to most coffee houses — and says it isn’t uncommon for him to be unable to sleep after a coffee house. “We get some fantastic musicians, locals and visitors, and I’ll be driving home feeling the hair on the back of my neck standing on end,” he said. “There have been performances that people would gladly pay $50 for in other venues. We have had Lorn Wolf and his son, Kyle, perform and just blow people away. And Elena Yeung’s first public performance was at the Wynndel Coffee House.” Bob Gollan, a Wynndel musician who has been at every coffee house since they started in 2001, said the evenings

grew out of a Monday night musical gathering in which a few dozen singers and musicians got together. “We had a 300-song book that had all kinds of different music in it — we had a great time,” he said. From those evenings, he said, came the idea for a coffee house that could help raise funds to maintain Wynndel Hall. Thousands of dollars in improvements have been made from coffee house revenues, he said. “When we were working to get the coffee houses going, I went around and bought equipment from pawn shops,” Gollan recalled. “We had the ugliest performance area you could imagine, with a red shag rug on the stage and dark brown curtains behind. And people loved it! “So many people have played at the coffee house who had never performed in public before. It’s a very supportive audience.” “It has enabled people who would normally be reluctant to get up stage to give it a try,” Rimmer agreed. Like many volunteer organizations, the coffee house has its ups and downs, and can be affected dramatically by the loss of one person. The passing of Al Spinks, who was a key organizer, left a hole that has been difficult to fill, Gollan said. “Wynndel Coffee House seems to have a life of its own,” he laughed. “But we would welcome more people getting involved to help lighten the load.” For more information, call Ralph Gerein at 250-428-5646.

Creston man pleads guilty in Nelson court to assault Nelson Star

A Creston man received an 18-month conditional sentence in Nelson court last month after pleading guilty to indecent assault in a case dating back to the 1970s. The man, who cannot be named to protect his victim, was originally charged in February 2012 with additional counts of incest, gross indecency and sex with a minor. He pled not guilty to all the alleged crimes but later admitted to indecent assault. At sentencing, the Crown stayed the remaining charges. The crimes were alleged to have occurred in Nakusp between 1972 and 1979. In addition to the conditional sentence, Judge Lisa Mrozinski prohibited the man from having contact with children for two years, ordered him to provide a DNA sample, and imposed a 10-year firearms ban.

Pass From page 1 Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks, who represents the east side of the pass, said that the route marked a big change for both health care and agriculture, with improved access for both. “What a wonderful testament to the people who went before, and the men and women who worked on it!” said Binks, who then thanked

Tabletree

From page 1 The couple got into the business when a trend toward lower prices for the once lucrative late season cherry crop began. As growers in the Okanagan, Washington and even Turkey entered the late season market, prices dropped dramatically. Adding value to what they produced on their Erickson orchard seemed like the only way to avoid the sea of debt promised by wholesale fruit prices that didn’t cover their cost of production. For the 2013 award, Tabletree was in competition with a Nova Scotia producer, Haskapa. Apple juice (one Creston chef says it should be called apple pie, so full is the flavour) was pitted against haskap berry juice. Haskap? It’s a largely unknown thin-skinned, elongated fruit from the honeysuckle plant that Susan said looks like an unusually shaped blueberry. “We actually have a row growing in our yard,” she said. “But it isn’t enough to make juice with. Haskap berries have amazing flavour.” While the Snows originally set out to make cherry juice, they were quite certain from the start that their process would work for other fruits. “We are even starting to think about vegetable juices,” Gary said. In the first year of production, Tabletree also produced a small amount of plum juice. Experiments since have included peaches and blueberries. An additional step on the production line reduces fruit juice to make a thicker product that is marketed as culinary sauce. “We thought we would be mostly making red apple culinary sauce this year, but with the World Juice 13 nomination I guess we will have to make more juice!” Gary said. He estimates Tabletree will produce about 5,000-6,000 bottles this winter. Last year, about 7,000 bottles of cherry juice were made and sold. Recognition from the World Juice awards hasn’t been the only time the Snows have stepped up to the podium. Long before production started, they won a BC Innovation Council award that came with a grant to help pay for the custom-made juice processing equipment. To earn the award, Gary and Susan had to make a pitch before a panel, much in the way contestants on Dragon’s Den do. It wasn’t an easy path. “When we did our pitch, a woman from IRAP (Industrial Research Assistance Program) really challenged us,” Gary said. “She said, ‘You guys have so much to learn you would have to take our courses just to learn how to fill out our applications.’ ” “Now she’s our best supporter.” Susan said. “Her concern was, ‘OK, cherries are going to take you a month, what are you going to do with the (processing) plant for the other 11 months?’ ” Gary recalled. “ ‘Have you thought of other fruits?’ And we actual-

contractor YRB for keeping it open. RDCK Area G director Hans Cunningham recalled that people used to head up the pass for a Sunday drive to check out the scenery, and said he is still impressed with the road. “The highway is only getting better,” he said. “We’re very lucky to have this all-weather road.” The project, which had been in the planning stages for several years before seasonal construction ran from 1957-1963, cost $13.6 million, and it remains the country’s highest mountain pass. “It proved that highway engineering can actually work miracles,” he said.

ly had thought of it. It wasn’t going to be our focus, but…” Response to Tabletree black cherry juice was immediate. Those who tasted it loved it, and soon reports were coming back from people with medical issues — gout, arthritis and the like — who swore the juice, taken regularly in small quantities, was making a difference in quality of life. In fact, before they learned last year about the World Juice nomination, Susan and Gary were planning a trip to Germany, where a food lab was doing tests on their juice to determine its healthfulness. Cherry juice, they learned when they visited on the way home from Barcelona, has anthocyanins, carotenoids, flavonoids and the like, all of which are believed to have health benefits. “We hear some amazing stories,” Susan said. A cancer survivor herself, she has continued to support the BC Cancer Foundation with some of the company’s proceeds. “Not a day goes by that someone doesn’t pull into our driveway to buy juice. They can purchase at outlets all over the place, but they like the idea of getting it directly from the source, I guess.”

Any system involving checks and balances, like a chess game, can end up in a stalemate. As evidence, I present the case of Tea Party vs. President Obama. With a president and Senate majority coming from the Democrat side and Republicans holding sway in Congress it can probably be said it’s a miracle that anything at all is getting done in the U.S. these days, governmentally speaking. Or perhaps it hasn’t been and maybe that’s not such a bad thing, really. Full-time elected officials are going to assume that their job is not only to govern, but to look busy, even if it means endlessly tinkering with things that might be just as well, or better, left alone. As the Republican insistence on not funding what has unfortunately become known as Obamacare, guaranteeing a partisan view among supporters and opponents, pushes the country toward financial default, the world watches and waits, having no real picture of what could happen if there is no agreement by Oct. 17 to raise the federal government’s debt ceiling. Like it or not, the world relies on a stable U.S. economy on which to base its trade. Much world trade is conducted in U.S. dollars, not because it necessarily ideal, but because it’s the best among a whole lot of worse choices. Oil exports from the Middle East are paid for in U.S. currency. While one might expect China, the emerging economic superpower, to step in to fill the vacuum, it has long preferred to control the value of its currency and not leave subject to the whims of global money traders. It probably isn’t a sustainable plan, but it’s worked for China to this point and the system won’t be undone overnight. The Chinese renminbi isn’t a global commodity right now. And the European Commission has too many

internal problems to make the Euro an option. The Japanese yen? Forget about it. Russian rubles? Nyet. So how does the economic model to the world get to the point where it

In my last column, I described the first practice of awakening that Buddha taught just before he died, “Have few desires.” This week, I discuss the second practice of awakening, “Know how much is enough.” The Buddha said, “If you want to be free from suffering, contemplate knowing how much is enough. By knowing it, you enter the place of enjoyment and peacefulness and will be contented even when you sleep on the ground. If you don’t know how much enough is, you will feel poor even if you have much wealth, and you will be constantly pulled by desire.” Not knowing how much is enough is the root of addiction. In fact, it is the very nature of addiction to turn off our capacity to know when we have had enough. This is why a major emphasis in mindful eating is learning to recognize when we have had enough. In truth, it is enough to have one or two potato chips, but so many of us don’t know that, so instead of having a brief enjoyable nibble, we don’t stop eating until the bag of potato chips is empty. It’s the same with all forms of addiction. It’s not only substance addiction

computer and waste precious hours in front of the screen. When we don’t know how much is enough, our lives get completely out of balance. We live in a world where nobody feels they have enough. We are taught to increase our income, our possessions, our friendships and our knowledge. Nations strive to “grow their economy.” The wealthy busy themselves with amassing more wealth. And yet, so much suffering comes from not knowing when we have enough. Wars are fought for more territory and resources, and pristine valleys are destroyed to make more ski resorts. Individuals who can’t set a limit to eat-

ing, drinking and amassing wealth know only discontent. When we know we have enough, we can spend less money and avoid supporting an economic system that exploits workers and destroys the environment. There are so many benefits to realizing when we have enough. Feeling satisfied with few possessions destroys greed and makes us content with being healthy and strong enough to nourish our spiritual lives. Knowing when we have enough cuts through the trap of satisfying excessive desires and give us an opportunity to attain peace of body and mind. When we are content with little, we can develop our capacity for generosity and use our abundant material goods to help others. Free of greed, we can realize the highest goal — enlightenment. Suggested practice: Notice when your thoughts, words and actions are rooted in a feeling that you need more than what you already have: a thinner body, more money, more friends, a bigger house, a better car. Poverty reduction plan needed to help B.C. students To the Editor: (Re: “Gov’t helping B.C. children in poverty”, Sept. 26 Advance, page 7) The issue of child poverty in British Columbia is no secret. The need for a poverty reduction plan is clear. We are heartened to see many citizens speaking out about this issue, but were disturbed by the recent letter that seems to provide information regarding the monies spent by the current government in an attempt to reduce child poverty. The outline of the funding spent is impressive; the argument that child poverty has been addressed is false. Shamefully, our province continues to have one of the highest rates of child poverty in Canada — despite the claims of money being spent on the issue. These are the staggering facts: •BC has had the worst child poverty record of any province for seven consecutive years. The child poverty rate in B.C. is 10.4 per cent — that’s 87,000 children living in poverty, based on the Statistics Canada aftertax low-income cut off. •The national poverty rate for First Nations children was 49 per cent in 2007 (First Call). •In B.C., 24.2 per cent of children in female lone-parent families live in poverty. •Fifteen per cent of children in two-parent families live below the poverty line in B.C. •Most low-income families have gross incomes significantly below the poverty line, with many of those working at minimum-wage jobs. •The vast majority of poor children in B.C. live in families with some earned income, and over half live in families where at least one person has a full-time job. As teachers, we see the impact of these statistics. Why do teachers care? Children living in poverty start school with many disadvantages in addition to chronic hunger. According to research, poor children are twice as likely as non-poor children to repeat a grade, be suspended from school, or drop out. They are 1.3 times as likely to have a developmental delay or learning disability and require special education services. These difficulties translate into the classroom, where teachers are more likely to assess poor children as poor students with more academic and behaviour problems. Poor children are also more likely to be hyperactive, suffer from emotional disorders, exhibit disorderly conduct, get into trouble with the

law, be in the care of child welfare services and engage in risky behaviour. As teachers, we play a critical role in helping these children to be successful in school and thus in life. Have you ever asked a teacher about poverty in their classrooms? If you have, you will hear from them about the food they bring for their students. Hungry children cannot learn. You will hear about the clothing they provide for their students. Children who are cold or wet do not learn easily. You will hear about the concerns they have when they know that the additional costs in school, such as extracurricular activity costs — or even bus fees — cause stress on the family budget. Teachers know that social issues stem often from the differences between children who “have” and children who “have not”. Poverty does not create a level playing — or learning — field in our classrooms. You cannot just claim that money spent on the issue will resolve it. If an engine needs repairs, you do not just lay money on the hood and claim it is fixed. You need a plan of action, an organized approach that deals with the issue. We are calling on the government to make a plan to ensure that children are not living in poverty. And that plan needs to be a systematic plan to deal with the wide-ranging causes of poverty — a poverty reduction plan. Rebecca Blair, President Creston Valley Teachers’ Associaiton

DriveAble unfairly targets B.C. senior drivers

To the Editor: Seniors are a large group of people and driving is very important to them. A group of misguided people, with the help of some very good snake oil salesmen, figured out how to make a very good income from the taxpayers of B.C. by doing very little in return. So the DriveAble mumbo jumbo was born, The testing is set up on a computer screen, and a fraction of a second is given to respond. The failure rate is 80-90 per cent. But it is so important that the DriveAble idea was contracted to the B.C. government to prevent the seniors from suing DriveAble and the government in civil courts. This testing is discrimination and injustice to B.C. seniors. The B.C. government would not dare to do the test to other B.C. drivers.

When young people get their licences, they are issued a conditional licence. Seniors should have the same privileges. After all, are we not the ones who have worked to create this province and the perks that all of us should be able to enjoy? If a senior is found not capable of extended driving, then a limitation should be put upon them, perhaps only driving within town limits or within 50 kilometres of home. The DriveAble nonsense is based on the assumption that we seniors are not competent to drive, and may or may not cause an accident. This statement goes for every driver on the road. According to the National Safety Council in Itasca, Ill., the age group 19 and under has 14.4 per cent of traffic accidents, the 25-34 year group has 24.3 per cent and 75 and over has 2.8 per cent of traffic accidents. The DriveAble program purports to prevent accidents from happening. There is a solution: Don’t live — you may die. Dick Kalman Creston

Abuse of funds leads to economic decline To the Editor: On Sept. 25, two economists at the University of Alberta announced that Canada’s economy has been on the decline for the past two decades. They did not give a reason why except for the government having something to do with it. I would say that the reasons are obvious: the abuse and mismanagement of public funds in all three government levels; out-of-control executive salaries and benefits, and costly non-productive long distance trips; and the digital compounding interest rate used by our banks, landlords, credit card companies and utility companies, all in the rate increases. All three of the above have been undermining our economy for years, and it may be coming to a brink. Our monetary system is at risk of collapse. It is my opinion that compounding interest rates are a blatant act of theft. Of course, you couldn’t tell that to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who now has got Canada in a $60 billion deficit, nor Premier Christy Clark, who has our province in a $6.1 billion deficit. How does a population of six million people, with only 3.5 million employed, pay down a compounding $6.1 billion? Even with the added business, it seems doubtful. The passing of the government’s budget is a joke. What’s to prevent the inevitable from happening when our government leaders are in denial of their financial problems? Michael Bunn Creston

Fall is time for cleanup

It’s early October. We’ve just had a couple of frosty nights. The sky is clear blue now, but we have had ample moisture from recent rains. Therefore, plant cells are full of water. Right now is a great time of year to move field-grown trees and shrubs. The earth is at

some years before I realized and observed with my own eyes that sandhill cranes frequented here in the spring and autumn. A large bird comes sailing over the dike. “Hey, that wasn’t a heron! That dark bird with outstretched neck and legs and a red cap was a sandhill crane.” My glimpses of sandhill cranes have been rather few, but each siting has always been a nice surprise. When I see sandhill cranes, it makes me think I am on the prairie, although that isn’t their only stomping ground. But, then we have a “prairie” right here, on the Kootenay River flats. The frosty evenings have reduced any demand for moisture from the top half of the tree or shrub to almost nil. As an added bonus, it is cool enough outside you probably won’t even have to break a sweat planting. You can dig a good size hole extra wide but not too deep, water your new tree or shrub in and let it root in for next spring. It really is the easiest time of year to take care of these things. My only caution with small items one gallon or less is to make sure the frost hasn’t heaved them partially

Are smart meters smart?

When I talked to meter-reading guy, he said he knows about job loss, and he knew it is useless to complain to FortisBC, because they won’t listen. He suggested to complain to the BC Utilities Commission instead — as if they ever listened to an average citizen. Another irony is that when FortisBC dudes “preventively” cut down trees on my property a few years ago, without my knowledge or consent, we lost beautiful harmless trees, but when I asked them to cut down dangerous trees leaning the wrong way after the July 2012 storm, which would defiVladimir Certik nitely bring problems during the next windstorm, they first refused, then sent a worker, then walked out altoOf course, smart meters are for our good gether. out of the ground in a couple weeks. Larger items do not have this concern. It is slow enough around the nursery this time of year; you may want to make an appointment before stopping by as I may be away. Fall is also a good time of year to get a jump on your yard and garden cleanup. As soon as your trees lose their leaves, you can rake them up and add them to your compost (except for walnut leaves). If you have had any disease issues with trees like peach, nectarine, Crimson King maple, mountain ash or hawthorn, I would caution you to either burn or otherwise dispose of these leaves where they won’t contribute to reinfecting your trees again next spring. Now is a good time to spray copper on these trees to protect them from infection during the cool and wet months ahead. Mulching of roses and perennial beds this time of year is beneficial. Remove persistent weeds, lightly shear back your evergreens and do some general cleanup. With consistent fall rains, now is an easy time of year to fill in those empty patches in your lawn. Lightly rake the soil and overseed. Ample moisture should have your seed growing in a few weeks. Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

Creston author Dave Perrin telling veterinarian stories at library CRESTON AND DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY

When your patients may bite, scratch or kick it helps to have a great sense of humour. Veterinarian-turned-author Dave Perrin has that and more. He turns amusing anecdotes into hilarious, compassionate stories. Perrin’s practice in the Creston Valley is the source of his well-loved series, Adventures of a Country Vet. Reading the books embroils us in a world quite different than our idealized version of

what it would be like to be a veterinarian. The reality is sometimes shocking and gross, but with Dr. Dave telling it is very entertaining. To maintain artistic and financial control of his work, Perrin decided to try something that is becoming more common, self-publishing. In 2000, Dave’s Press was established and his first book in the Adventures of a Country Vet series, Don’t Turn Your Back in the Barn, was published. It was followed with the release of Dr. Dave’s Stallside Manner (2001), Where Does it Hurt? (2003), Never

Say Die (2006) and When the Going Gets Tough (2010). More information about Perrin, the press and the books can be found at www.davespress.com. You can meet Dave Perrin and listen to the stories he has to tell when he visits the Creston and District Public Library at 7 p.m. Oct. 22. Everyone is welcome to this free event, brought to you by the Kootenay Library Federation and the Creston library. For more information, contact the library at 250-428-4141 or visit www. crestonlibrary.com.

THANKSGIVING

14 www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca This year Canadians will be celebrating Thanksgiving on Monday, October 14. Canadians will spend a considerable amount of time gathering with family and friends to give thanks and celebrate the bounty of the fall harvest. Thanksgiving has a distinct focus on the fall and harvest and is celebrated earlier than Americans celebrate their Thanksgiving because of Canada’s northern latitude, which brings an earlier harvest. English explorer Martin Frobisher may well be the father of our modern Canadian Thanksgiving. In 1578, after his landing in Newfoundland, Frobisher gave thanks for his safe arrival. The practice of “giving thanks” was already a widespread practice in Europe, and Thanksgiving became an official Canadian

holiday on January 31, 1957, when Canadian Parliament announced, “A day of general thanksgiving to almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed will be observed on the second Monday in October.” Since that time, Thanksgiving officially occurs on the second Monday in October. However, the most common day to eat the Thanksgiving meal is the Sunday during the three-day weekend. The Canadian Thanksgiving is no stranger to football, either. Each Thanksgiving, Canadians gather around their television sets to enjoy the Thanksgiving Day Classic, an annual doubleheader. The teams that participate in the Thanksgiving Day games rotate annually. Although much of Canada celebrates

Thanksgiving in the same way, with food, football and parades, in Quebec the celebration is a bit different. English-speaking residents may celebrate, but French Canadians generally do not involve themselves in the festivities.

especially with such a big meal like Thanksgiving dinner, and when encouraged, kids can enjoy spending time cooking and learning how to prepare meals,”

Thursday, October 10, 2013 Creston Valley Advance

says Laura McGowan, Director of Marketing, LG Electronics Canada. “Helping in the kitchen teaches useful skills that will last long past dinnertime and create

some great moments together as a family as well.” McGowan provides insight on children of all ages lending a hand and learning in the kitchen.

This year make Thanksgiving dinner preparation a family affair. Thanksgiving is a time to be appreciative and a time to enjoy delicious food. But the meal shouldn’t be the responsibility of just one person. As the saying goes, ‘many hands make light work’. By teaching your kids how to help in the kitchen from meal prep to cleanup, you’re also helping them understand how to prepare healthy meals and appreciate food for years to come. “Parents can always use an extra pair of hands in the kitchen,

When children are involved in picking out new foods, such as exciting vegetables, they’re more likely to try (and enjoy) new things, helping to expand their palate. • Meal math: Task elementary-aged kids to measuring out certain ingredients using measuring cups and spoons. Once measured, invite them to mix as needed to learn what the end result will be. • Little chefs: Setting the table and retrieving ingredients from the pantry or refrigerator are good activities for younger children who might not have the skills necessary to prepare food. • Team cleanup: Ensure everyone lends a hand with the cleanup. • Buddy System: Always have an adult present in the kitchen when children are helping with food preparation and ensure knives or other sharp objects and hot elements are well out of reach of little hands.

About Squash: A Popular Fall Ingredient Nutritional Value All squashes provide vitamin A and vitamin C, some of the B vitamins, iron and are a good source of riboflavin and dietary fiber. Deep-colored squashes have the most beta carotene. About 100 calories are in one cup of cooked squash. Roasted Hubbard Squash Soup with Hazelnuts & Chives • 3 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil • 3 large cloves garlic, peeled • 1 Tbs. coriander seeds • 1-1/2 tsp. fennel seeds • 1-1/2 tsp. dried sage • 1 small (5-1/2- to 6-lb.) Hubbard squash, halved lengthwise and seeded • 2 Tbs. unsalted butter • 1 large leek (white and light-green parts only), halved lengthwise and thinly sliced crosswise • 2 medium carrots, peeled and cut into small dice • Kosher salt • 5 cups lower-salt chicken or vegetable broth • 1 bay leaf • 2 tsp. fresh lemon juice

Hubbard Squash Difficult to peel and cube because of its rigid exterior, Hubbard squash is most often cooked in its skin. Carefully halve Hubbard squash, if they are purchased whole, remove seeds and roast, cut-side down, until tender when pierced with fork. Prepare the same way if purchasing precut sections. Scoop cooked flesh from the skin and puree into soup or stew. Cooked squash can also be mixed with wild rice • Freshly ground black pepper • 1/2 cup hazelnuts, toasted, skinned, and chopped • 2 Tbs. thinly sliced chives • Several small pinches Espelette pepper or cayenne Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat the oven to 400ºF. Line a heavyduty rimmed baking sheet with parchment. In a mortar and pestle, pound the oil, garlic, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, and sage until they resemble a coarse paste. Rub the spice mixture on the flesh of the squash halves. Set them cut side down on the prepared pan and roast until tender when pierced with a fork, about 1 hour. Let cool, cut side up. When cool enough to handle,

or whole grains and baked into casseroles. For a sweet preparation, mix pureed squash with cream, sugar, eggs, spices and bake into pie. To store whole squash, keep in a dry cool area. Refrigerate plasticwrapped cut pieces up to five days. Fond of squash for centuries in America, this vegetable has become a traditional fall and winter dish with its warm, soothing, comforting, delicious flavor. An extensive group, Hubbards are a very

old type of winter squash and are members of the Curcurbita maxima genus. The original variety of this well-known and popular squash is thought to be native to South America or the West Indies. Butternut Squash Native to the Western Hemisphere, the butternut squash is the most widely grown winter squash. A member of the cucurbitaceae family, this large group includes not only squash, but also

gourds and pumpkins. Producing a rich, golden-yellow flesh with excellent texture, Butternut squash is one of the most popular varieties of hard winter squash. Butternuts are a smooth, long-necked bowling pin or bellshaped squash, encased with a pinkish-tan, hard rind. Having a relatively small seed cavity in its bulbous end, the tender flesh offers a creamy flavor. This old favorite offers fine eating and consistent flavor. Yielding more meat than most other squashes, Butternuts

Stop By! We’re Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 9am - 4pm weigh two to five pounds. To prepare, cut rinsed squash in half lengthwise; remove seeds. Bake, roast, steam, braise, sautee or puree. scrape the flesh away from the rind—you’ll need about 5 cups. Melt the butter in a 5- to 6-quart Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the leek, carrots, and a big pinch of salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until the leek is softened, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the squash, broth, bay leaf, and 1 tsp. salt and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to a low simmer, cover, and cook for 30 minutes to develop the soup’s flavor. Remove the bay leaf and allow the soup to cool slightly. Purée the soup in batches in a blender. Return the soup to the pot and add the lemon juice. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish with the chopped hazelnuts, chives, and Espelette pepper or cayenne.

Squash Dip

• 1 medium butternut squash • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 whole head garlic • 2 tablespoons low-fat sour cream • 1 lemon, juiced • pepper to taste cup finely • 1/4 chopped walnuts

Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Halve squash lengthwise and remove seeds and membrane. Brush the cut side of the squash halves with some of the olive oil, and place them oiled-side-down on a baking sheet. Cut the top off of the head of garlic, and drizzle the remaining olive oil over it. Wrap in aluminum foil, and place on the baking sheet with the squash. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until the squash can easily be pierced with a fork. Scoop the squash out of its skin, and place in a serving bowl. Squeeze the cloves of garlic out of their skins, and into the bowl with the squash. Mash or hand-blend until smooth or use a food processor. Stir in the sour cream and lemon juice until well blended. Add pepper to taste. Sprinkle walnuts over the top. Serve warm or at room temperature with pita chips or French bread. (adapted from allrecipes.com)

1608 Northwest Blvd, Creston, BC • 250-428-9388 2013 Fire Prevention Week is all about preventing kitchen fires. 33% percent of all fires in BC start in the kitchen. In fact, more fires start in the kitchen than in any other room of the house. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, broiling or boiling food. • If you must leave the kitchen, even for a

short time, turn off the stove. • When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay home and use a timer to remind yourself. • If you have young children, use the stove’s back burners whenever possible. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the stove • When you cook,

wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves. • Keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, towels or anything else that can burn away from your stovetop. • Clean up food and grease from the burners, stovetops and the oven. • Don’t store combustibles in the drawer below the oven.

Home Fires • In 2011, U.S. fire departments responded to 370,000 home structure fires. These fires caused 13,910 civilian injuries, 2,520 civilian deaths, $6.9 billion in direct damage. • On average, seven people die in U.S. home fires per day. • Cooking is the leading cause home fires and home fire

injuries, followed heating equipment.Smoking is a leading cause of civilian home fire deaths. • Most fatal fires kill one or two people. In 2011, 12 home fires killed five or more people resulting in a total of 67 deaths. Cooking • Fire Departments responded to an estimated annual average

of 156,600 cookingrelated fires between 2007-2011, resulting in 400 civilian deaths, 5,080 civilian injuries and $853 million in direct damage. • Two of every five home fires start in the kitchen. • Unattended cooking was a factor in 34% of reported home cooking fires. • Two-thirds of home cooking fires

started with ignition of food or other cooking materials. • Ranges accounted for the 58% of home cooking fire incidents. Ovens accounted for 16%. • Children under five face a higher risk of non-fire burns associated with cooking than being burned in a cooking fire.

leading cause of in the kitchen is unattended cooking. Most cooking fires in the home involve the stovetop.

Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove. If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking. Keep anything that can catch fire - oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains - away from your stovetop.

IF YOU HAVE A COOKING FIRE... • • • • •

Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave. If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out. Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled. For an oven fire turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

Creston Valley Advance Thursday, October 10, 2013 Microwave ovens are one of the leading home products associated with scald burn injuries not related to fires. Nearly half (44%) of the microwave oven injuries seen at emergency rooms in 2011 were scald burns. • Clothing was the item first ignited in less than 1% of home cooking fires, but these incidents accounted for 16% of the cooking fire deaths. Heating • The leading factor contributing to heating equipment fires was failure to clean, principally creosote from solid fueled heating equipment, primarily chimneys. • Portable or fixed space heaters, including wood stoves, were involved in one-third (32%) of home heating fires and four out of five (80%) home heating deaths. • Half of home heating fire deaths resulted from fires caused by heating equipment too close to things that can burn, such as upholstered furniture, clothing, mattresses or bedding. • In most years,

heating is the second leading cause of home fires, fire deaths, and fire injuries. Fixed or portable space heaters are involved in about 4 out of 5 heating fire deaths. Smoking Materials • During 2007-2011 smoking materials caused an estimated 17,900 home structure fires, resulting in 580 deaths, 1,280 injuries and $509 million in direct property damage, per year. • Sleep was a factor in one-third of the home smoking material fire deaths. • Possible alcohol impairment was a factor in one in five of home smoking fire deaths. • In recent years, Canada and the United States have required that all cigarettes sold must be “fire safe,” that is have reduced ignition strength and less likely to start fires. Electrical • About half (49%) of home electrical fires involved electrical distribution or lighting equipment. Other leading types of equipment were washer or

FIRE PREVENTION

dryer, fan, portable or stationary space heater, air conditioning equipment water heater and range. • Electrical failure or malfunctions caused an average of almost 50,000 home fires per year, resulting in roughly 450 deaths and $1.5 billion in direct property damage. Candles • During 2007-2011 candles caused 3% of home fires, 4% of home fire deaths, 7% of home fire injuries and 6% of direct property damage from home fires. • On average, there are 32 home candle fires reported per day. • Roughly onethird of these fires started in the bedroom; however, the candle industry found that only 13% of candle users burn candles in the bedroom most often. • More than half of all candle fires start when things that can burn are too close to the candle. Escape Planning • According to an NFPA survey, only one-third of Americans

have both developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. • Almost threequarters of Americans do have an escape plan; however, more than half never practiced it . • One-third of American households who made an estimate thought they would have at least 6 minutes before a fire in their home would become life threatening. The time available is often less. And only 8% said their first thought on hearing a smoke alarm would be to get out!

Smoke Alarms • Almost twothirds (62%) of reported home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. • Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half. • In fires considered large enough to activate the smoke alarm, hardwired alarms operated 92% of the time, while battery powered alarms operated only 77% of the time. www.fpw.org

Fall Back To Smart Home Safety When the rest of BC turns back the clocks on November 3, here are some timely smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) safety tips: • At their time change, test your smoke alarm. • You have less than three minutes to escape a fire. So when smoke alarms sound, everyone must know what to do and where to go. Having and practising an escape plan is essential. • Install one smoke alarm on every storey and outside bedrooms. Install inside bedrooms if you sleep with doors closed. • Ensure all smoke alarms are fully powered. Never take out batteries or remove an alarm from ceiling due to a false alarm. • If your home has any fuel-burning devices such as a gas furnace, gas water heater, gas appliances, or an attached garage or carport, install at least one CSA-approved carbon monoxide outside all sleeping areas. One per storey is recommended. • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years, and CO alarms every 7-10

years (depending on manufacturer) whether battery operated or hardwired into your home’s electrical system. Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and tasteless. So without a CO alarm, humans cannot detect its presence. Despite the average home having several potential sources of the deadly gas, studies show that nearly 60 per cent of Canadians have not installed a CO alarm. In addition to being impossible to detect, CO also has another nefarious trait. Symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure mimic the flu, without the fever. It is routinely responsible for thousands of clinic and hospital visits each year, and is commonly misdiagnosed. Prolonged or extreme exposure causes nausea, dizziness, confusion, the loss of physical mobility, brain damage and ultimately, death.

Dad was born and raised on a dairy farm in Creston, BC, one of eight children. He is predeceased by his father Simon, mother May, his sister Anne Bjarnason and his brother Carl. Beverley, the mother of his children and his special partner Melody van der Walt. Dad received his journeyman ticket from SAIT in Calgary. In 1962 he bought an old milk truck, packed up his young family and moved to Cranbrook where he started East West Refrigeration. He was a one man band and single handedly installed the refrigeration components for most of the large buildings within the East Kootenay’s. Many will remember him as the giant with the red curly hair. During his career in Cranbrook, Dad made a deal on a job and in exchange got himself a cabin at Tie Lake which was his pride and joy. Many a good time was shared by all compliments of Dad. In 1975, he was offered the position at C & A Sheet Metal in Lethbridge to head up their new refrigeration department. The move was on. Come the 80’s, Dad decided that it was time for a career change, something that would ease him into retirement and so became “Dave’s Mini Mallâ€? located in Nobleford, AB. He loved the small town environment and his “regularsâ€? who came every day. Rather than simply retire, Dad became the caretaker at Elk Sanca, a camp for children at Kootenay Lake. He had Ă€nally found the place he was supposed to be. Dad believed that there was merit in hard work and practiced what he preached. He dabbled in all kinds of activities,

trying everything at least once from taking the biggest bobcat in the Kootenay’s at the time, to Ă€shing, always wearing red cause â€œĂ€sh like redâ€? to wood burning, wine making, cooking, you name it. Then came the Winnebago, that’s another story. He was a jack of all trades there was nothing that he could not Ă€x. He loved the outdoors most of all. He is survived by his sisters Kay Harris, Marion MacDonald and Barbara Dolan, his brothers Johnnie and Stan Sorensen many nieces and nephews, his daughters Katie Nagy, Tracey Sawatsky (Doug), his son Brian Sorensen and his precious grandchildren Catlin & Teagan Nagy. It takes an army to do this battle and we would like to thank our employer’s, clients & friend’s for graciously allowing us the time to care for Dad during the Ă€ght. A special thanks to Ingrid Boudreau for holding the fort. Dad was a simple man and requested that there be no fuss, he asked that we all get together sometime and enjoy each other. In appreciation for their assistance we would be honored to have the Cranbrook & Kimberley Hospice 6ociety beneĂ€t from Dad’s life #20 – 23rd Avenue South, Cranbrook, BC, V1C 5V1, or phone 1 250 417 2019 “Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anywayâ€? – John Wayne It’s 5 o’clock somewhereÂŤ..

Our Punky was suddenly taken from this earth on Saturday, September 28 2013 at 36 years old, leaving us to mourn his passing but also to celebrate his life.

Born October 26, 1976 to Wesley and Diana Grindle, Derek showed his daring and energetic side at a young age, learning to scale his crib bars when he was still a baby. His youth was spent with his older brother, Travis, and Uncle Ian, roaming the woods of East $rrow Creek building forts, Àshing and Ànding new adventures throughout the mountainside. The family moved into Erickson in the summer of 1989. Derek attended Erickson Elementary School, before moving on to Adam Robertson School and Ànally graduating from Prince Charles Secondary School. He went on to study millwrighting in Nelson before returning to Creston.

On -anuary 7, 1999, Derek welcomed his Àrst child into the world, daughter Kiera Lee. In 2005 he married the love of his life, Kristin and together they built a beautiful family with the birth of son Connor Lee in 2007 and daughter Taitem Payge in 2010. Punk made his passion for the woods his living, working as a logger for the past ten years and previous to that at Huscroft Sawmill. Derek will be remembered for his zest for life, adventure and risk. He made friends easily and enjoyed a number of pastimes that usually centered on the outdoors camping and Àshing where particular favorites.

Derek is survived by his loving wife, Kristin; his three beautiful children; Kiera, Connor and Taitem; his parents, Diana and Wesley and brother, Travis (Tara); along with numerous relatives from the Grindle, Hubl and Staginnus families. Those wishing to make a donation to Derek’s children can do so at the Creston & District Credit Union Account #295287.

SCAM ALERT

One of the most common scams is the “prize pitch” Consumers are told they have been specially selected to win a prize, or have been awarded one of three or two of five prizes. These prizes usually include cash or a vehicle. You must purchase a product and pay in advance to receive your prize. These products may include “coin collections”, personalized pen sets, etc. The products are generally cheap or overpriced, but may sound valuable over the phone.

Need A Vehicle! Guaranteed Auto Loan. Apply Now, 1.877.680.1231 www.UapplyUdrive.ca

Remember, in a legitimate contest you DO NOT have to purchase a product to qualify for a prize.

You’re right on Fraudulenttarget use of RCMP Letterhead scam: when you place classifieds in the Creston Valley Advance

Fraudsters have created an email scam using the RCMP name and logo. It is an extortion email scam in which recipients are advised that if they don’t proceed with the transaction they will go to jail for 4 months. The email is claiming that the victim has recently sold something and the item was never received by the buyer. The email claims the scam was reported by PayPal Fraud Investigations team. Fraudsters will frequently use recognized institutional names such as the RCMP as well as other existing company names such as PayPal to convince potential victims of the authenticity of the scam. The emails and documents will also appear to be very formal and contractual and can be stamped with official looking government seals or be written on official looking legal letterhead so as if to appear more genuine.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre recommends anyone receiving these emails not to respond. In addition to scamming the victim financially, these fraudsters also hope to acquire

personal information so that they can steal your identity.

Warning Signs - How to protect yourself

You can minimize risk through safeguards such as the following: Government and police agencies in Canada will never send unsolicited notices attempting to coerce consumers into sending money. Be wary of unsolicited emails requesting the transfer of funds. These scams are often recognizable since the correspondence often contains grammatical and spelling errors.

Many in the Creston area will already know of the versatile trio made of up Eric Johnson, Ken Gerding and Llana Kilpatrick, but they only just recently decided on the name of Trio Cara, meaning “three friends”. Trio Cara performs a fine array of cover arrangements in the soft rock and folk genres, and are now branching out into some jazz pieces as well, which they will offer in a concert on Oct. 11 at the Snoring Sasquatch. Guitarist Johnson is known both locally and in Nelson for his participation in a wide variety of musical

With Trio Cara, he is focusing his talents on his versatility as a guitarist and on some vocals. Electric bass player Gerding displays a fine versatility as evidenced by his ability to play not only the styles of Trio Cara, but also those of the two other bands in which he plays bass,

The senior girls volleyball team, coached by Allison Kepke and Bob Gollan, had its first tournament at Mount Sentinel Secondary School. It was an important team building weekend, with the members getting used to each other. Overall, the girls won five games and lost two. The team defeated L.V. Rogers (Nelson) twice, J.L. Crowe (Trail) and Aberdeen Hall (Kelowna) twice. The team lost to Mt. Sentinel and Selkirk (Kimberley). Desirae Robinson was initiated with trial by fire, being the libero for every game. Brooke Evans, Kaitlyn Jaap and Alisha Dyck were a blocking wall at the net. Courtney Valer found her stride quickly and had some strong hits.

The junior boys, coached by Bill Ferguson, travelled to Nakusp, where they defeated Golden 5-1, Nakusp B 4-0 and Kimberley 5-0, and tied Nakusp A 1-1. BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Creston Valley Thunder Cats returned home from a three-game road trip early Monday morning to find themselves in first place in the KIJHL Eddie Mountain Division. The Thunder Cats won their first two games, in Kamloops and 100 Mile House before narrowly going down to defeat in Chase on Sunday. A 6-4 win in Kamloops started the Cats off to a strong road trip but it didn’t come easily. Creston’s Carson Cartwright finally put his team ahead 5-4 in the third period on a goal assisted by Connor Ward. Brandon Formosa sealed the deal with an empty netter after taking a pass from Andrew Hodder. Kamloops had jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, but an unassisted effort from Maverick Lynes put the game into a tie when the teams skated off the ice at intermission. The Cats scored the first two goals in the middle frame, with goals by Jesse Collins and Logan Styler. Kamloops roared back to tie the game at 4-4 before Wyatt Petryshen scored. Creston goaltender Magnus Viberg faced 41 shots on goal, while the Thunder Cats managed only 20 shots on their opponent. On Saturday a three-hour drive northwest to 100 Mile House was rewarded when the Cats cruised to a 5-2 win over the hometown Wranglers. Trevor Hanna notched the only goal in the first period. After the Wranglers evened the game at 1-1 early in the second period, a three-goal outburst put Creston in the driver’s

seat. Colby Livingstone, Matthew Murray and Brandon Formosa put the Cats up 4-1 after two periods. Collins added to Creston’s lead in the third on an assist from Hanna before Viberg gave up a goal and the Cats cruised to victory. Game stats showed Creston being outshot 41-20 and Viberg had a strong game in net. Hopes for a road sweep were dashed on Sunday when the Chase Heat put the run on the Thunder Cats, riding a third period rally to a 7-5 victory. The teams alternated scoring in a five-goal opening frame, with Chase getting the first and last laugh. Livingstone scored both Cats’ goals.. Creston regained the lead in the second period when Formosa and Styler scored. A power play goal by Chase sent the teams into the dressing room tied at 4-4. Two early third period goals put the Heat up for good, though. Collins’ unassisted effort drew the Thunder Cats to within a goal, but Chase iced the game with an empty netter. Brock Lefebvre faced 40 shots in goal for Creston. Creston sits alone atop the Eddie Mountain Division with 12 points in 9 games. Kimberley Dynamiters are a point behind, but have 2 games in hand. Columbia Valley has 10 points in 9 games to sit in third place in the close division race. The Thunder Cats visit the Fernie Ghostriders on Friday and then don’t lace up their games skates again until Tuesday, when they play host to the Beaver Valley Nitehawks, who are off to a strong 6-1 start and second place in the league’s Neil Murdoch Division.
