the company cited uncertain global economic conditions behind the decision to keep the project deferred indefinitely. “Since the announcement of the deferral, Teck has continued to reduce capital expenditures,” said Adair. “Any decision to restart the project would be based on a number of variables, including global market conditions.” The No. 4 Furnace Project was to be built at the southeast corner of the property, overlooking downtown and the Columbia River, and designed to increase Teck’s capacity for recycling end-of-life electronics. New construction would include one slag fuming furnace and one settling furnace. If the project proceeds the new furnaces would tie into the existing lead smelting operations and increase the ability to process e-waste and improve the recovery of lead, zinc copper and other metals from current and new feeds. “Teck remains committed to long

School District 20 board chair Darrel Ganzert has said the short term outlook for SD 20 should see no drastic cuts to cover the cost of the tentative agreement with CUPE members. “We may have to put off some work that we were hoping to have done but labour peace comes at a price,” said Ganzert. “So, for the short term, we’re okay. Pacific Coastal – Cranbrook to Kelowna Staff Cranbrook Daily Townsman

Travellers will be able to get from Cranbrook to Kelowna in less than an hour starting next month. On Friday, October 4, Pacific Coastal Airlines announced it will launch a direct Cranbrook to Kelowna service starting on Monday, November 18. The service will operate Sunday to Friday. It will depart Cranbrook at 3:10 p.m. MT and arrive in Kelowna at 3:25 p.m. PT. For the reverse trip, the aircraft leaves Kelowna at 3:25 p.m. PT, arriving in Cranbrook at 5:15 p.m. MT. Before this route was announced, air travellers needed to fly from Cranbrook to Vancouver and then

transfer to a flight to Kelowna, making for a much longer trip. “This marks a significant advancement in air access, allowing strategic economic ties between the Thompson Okanagan and Kootenay Columbia Valleys to grow to new heights,” said Tristen Chernove, managing director of Canadian Rockies International Airport. “For the length of my time in the Kootenay Rockies region, Kelowna has remained one of the most requested flight destinations.” Chernove said he was “ecstatic to see this new route get off the ground.” The new route came about through a partnership between Pacific Coastal Airlines, Canadian Rockies International

Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski praised Pacific Coastal as outstanding corporate citizens. “I very much appreciate Pacific Coastal’s loyalty to Cranbrook,” Stetski said. “The new flights to Kelowna will make it much better for people who have medical appointments — particularly in the winter — and also for those who want to visit the Okanagan. “Pacific Coastal are really great corporate citizens for us, and when you factor in the new Victoria flight they’ve added, they’ve really done our city well.” –Sally MacDonald and Barry Coulter.

Retirement Living at it’s Best

In this modern age there is no reason that seniors shouldn’t have the best retirement possible. The ideals of having a comfortable home, being able to set your own schedule based upon your interests, exceptionally delicious and nutritious food with the company of others: this should be the norm, not the exception. Seniors should be able to live in a place that ensures they can maintain their independence while also having their needs met, instead of just a ‘home on the hill,’ Fortunately Silver Kettle Village believes in the higher quality of life and aims to provide an entirely new form of housing to seniors that will ensure all residents will have the most opportunity to experience the best years of their life, on their terms. Silver Kettle Village is an amazing community located at an ideal location in Grand Forks, British Columbia. It features a variety of apartment sizes to suit any senior’s lifestyle ranging from studio apartments to two bedrooms supported with various cooking and cleaning services to ensure that seniors can spend more time living their lives and less time worrying about scrubbing the floors. Included in each of these maintenance-free suites is a range of features designed to accommodate even the most independent resident’s desires, while still having 24-hour emergency monitoring service for a little extra piece of mind. Full kitchens are laid out to be as bright and comfortable as possible and come with a stove and refrigerator to allow for the preparation of personal meals or snacks anytime. Each suite is also equipped with its own personal heat and air conditioning to allow the residents to decide their personal comfort level. Stepping beyond the privacy of their personal suite, residents will find a wide range and variety of common and shared areas including a fully stocked library, on-site beauty salons, a luxurious and relaxing spa room, a games room filled with a variety of leisure opportunities, and an activity-room which hosts a range of interesting events and entertainment. All this is supplemented with several very cozy and conveniently-placed

lounges. Each of these areas is easily accessible, and help to encourage the strong sense of community that makes the Village such a wonderful place to be. Silver Kettle Village also realizes just how much pets are a part of the family which is why the building is completely pet friendly, encouraging residents to bring their companions with them to share their suite. The hospitality services come with no extra charge to the affordable monthly rent which allow residents to enjoy worry-free benefits like the 24hour emergency monitoring, weekly housekeeping, the wide variety of daily social and recreational activities, as well as the complimentary shuttle bus. Also of note is the fantastic central dining room which is both elegant and intimate with its own fireplace. There, residents can enjoy delicious meals which are prepared by on-site chefs, and are served by a passionate and cheerful wait staff who are always happy to welcome guests and family to any meal. In addition to these wonderful amenities, utility bills including water, heat, air conditioning, and cable television are covered by the low-monthly rent, allowing seniors to spend less time worrying about bills and more time enjoying their retirement. Silver Kettle Village’s location in Grand Forks is only a short drive away from the small town’s historic downtown which is filled with an array of shops and services. Nestled in the Kootenay Boundary, one can be assured of spectacular and scenic views of the surrounding mountains. This setting only adds to a peaceful and relaxing environment that Silver Kettle Village aims to provide for its residents. With many parks, golf courses, and the magnificent Christina Lake located nearby there is an abundance of adventure to be had. Without having to worry about the responsibilities of home-ownership seniors at Silver Kettle Village are able to enjoy their lives to the fullest in whatever way they choose. Christina Lake was named in honour of woman’s bravery July 1, 1939 to 1944, and then became a year-round office again. It amalgamated with the Cascade

greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Thirty-second in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names. Few local place names honour women, much less ones with First Nations ancestry. The major exception is Christina Lake, named after Christina MacDonald McKenzie Williams (1847-1925). She was born in present-day Idaho, the second-eldest child of Angus MacDonald, chief Hudson’s Bay Company trader at Fort Colville, Wash., and Catherine Baptiste, a cousin to a Nez Perce chief. Christina was close to her father, whom she travelled with and acted as interpreter and bookkeeper for. Their annual trip to Fort Kamloops followed a trail along the Kettle River, which had to be crossed at one point. According to a 1945 manuscript on Boundary place names by Rupert Haggen, during one trip Christina’s raft fell apart and she was thrown into the water along with the buckskin sack containing her father’s books and papers. She was swept downstream, but upon being rescued was still holding the satchel. Some sources state the Hudson’s Bay Company was so impressed with her courage that they named the lake in her honour. Haggen, however, said the name was not bestowed directly by the company, but rather “In appreciation of her efforts … the Council of Indian Chiefs bequeathed ‘to her, her heirs, executors and assigns forever’ the sole right to hunt, fish or trap over that area tributary to Christina Lake and Creek. Henceforth, the stream and consequently the lake, bore the name Christina.”

(Unfortunately, Haggen’s source is unclear.) In an autobiography published in the Washington Historical Quarterly of April 1922, Christina McDonald acknowledged she was the lake’s namesake but didn’t explain the circumstances. She recalled that in 1878, she and her first husband, Hudson’s Bay clerk James McKenzie, left for Victoria along with Joe LaFlure, another company man: “When we came to Christina Creek, LaFlure said in French, ‘Here is your

Creek, Christina.’ Christina Lake and Creek are named after me.” There’s also an alternate and undoubtedly wrong origin in the Canadian Geographical Names Database which states the lake was named “after an Indian girl, born on its shore, and baptized Christina by a priest; later drowned in same lake.” Christina Lake first appeared on an 1871 map by J.W. Trutch, but the earliest newspaper reference isn’t until the Victoria Daily Colonist of January 13, 1893.

Previously geographer John Palliser wrote in his journal entry of September 26, 1859: “Proceeding along the crest of this hill for several miles, we at length came in sight of a lake, called by the Indians Lake Nichelaam, to which they repair to fish late in the autumn from the south.” The translation of Nichelaam isn’t known. The Christina Lake post office opened on August 16, 1912, became a summer post office in 1923, closed September 30, 1930, re-opened as a summer post office from

As a vehicle owner you’re always looking for peace of mind. New events guide for Rossland GF interested in river pact Timothy schafer West Kootenay Advertiser

Rossland is a four-season recreational wonderland. People come from across North America and the world to enjoy the warm, friendly hospitality of a mountain town. The city and its recreational backyard are full of numerous little paradises to discover, things to see, places to eat at and events to immerse yourself in.

Now there will be a onestop guide to seeing it all, and when to see it, with the launch of the new This is Rossland Events Guide. A publication of Black Press and the Rossland News, the intention of the guide is to print an all-inclusive events calendar for locals and visitors. The guide will include month-by-month listings of events but will also include stories and photos on some of the larger commu-

nity events. Community groups will be able to list their events for the year and the guide will highlight as many as possible with stories and photos. Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of this great new community guide. People interested in submitting an event for the guide—or to advertise— can contact Monika at advertising@rosslandnews. com.

Grand Forks city councillor Cher Wyers met with Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines at the recent Union of BC Municipalities convention to discuss the Columbia River Treaty. Although Grand Forks is not in the treaty area, the city wanted to show support for the treaty. The 1964 agreement between Canada and the United States regards the development of dams for power and flood control benefits for both

countries. The earliest either country can terminate the CRT agreement is 2024, but notice must be given 10 years prior. “We were there to give a letter of support,” said Wyers. “Even though we’re not part of the Columbia Basin Trust (an organization created to help communities affected by the CRT in B.C.), the decisions they make have a considerable impact on our region. We’re part of the regional district (with Trail), which sees a direct financial benefit. So any benefit they see there trickles down on our side in other forms.”

Batoche Bell rung in Richmond Continued from P. A14

The 20-pound solid silver bell had an arduous journey back to Western Canada beginning in the 1930’s when it was damaged in a fire at the Millbrook Fire Hall. After that event, the bell remained hidden from view until the late ‘60s when it resurfaced on display in the Millbrook Legion. In 1967, the federal government asked the RCMP to retrieve the bell and return it to Batoche, at which time the Legion refused to release it claiming it a trophy of war. Western Métis leaders again requested the bell’s return in 1989 and 1991, but the Legion dug in its heels and continued to declare it a war relic. On the 147th anniversary of Louis Riel’s birthday, October 22, 1991, the bell mysteriously disap-

peared from the Legion. Three months ago, the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Marie Antoinette (Bell of Batoche) from the Millbrook Legion was officially solved when Manitoba Métis Billy Jo Delaronde came forward to tell the story about retrieving the bell 22 years ago. Delaronde, now known as “Keeper of the Bell,” has said that on a “gentleman’s dare” he and four Métis accomplices travelled to Millbrook and reclaimed Marie for the Métis people. “During the annual meeting, Mr. Delaronde told his story about how he got the Métis bell back,” said Taylor. “What an incredible tale he had, I wish everyone could have heard it.” During Back to Batoche Days in July, the bell was officially released to Le Musee de Saint-Boniface Museum in Winnipeg.

Approximately 1,500 students have participated in the program this year at the park’s spawning channel. Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week October 11, 2013

Tip of the Week: As the new season gains momentum themes of justice, equality and the need for cooperation, tolerance and acceptance of differences and of change are resounding on the airwaves. These themes are all closely linked to the archetype of Libra, which at best implies diplomacy, fairness, balance, harmony and appreciation of all sides of any argument. The principle of balance is dynamic and not static. This means that the balance point is always moving. Thus, to maintain balance we must even ‘move on’ with the rhythm and flow of changes. This is the basic challenge of life. So, here we are at a pivotal point in time and history. In some respects things have not changed. The drama rages on despite a steady ‘progress’ of civilization. Yet to assume that the steady progression of time, into the future, means that things will get progressively better than they were is idealistic and represents a linear point of view. While our modern world with all its science and technology and certainly made many improvements, they have also caused their fair share of issues. In the cycles of life and there are many, there are high and lows that every generation experiences. Currently, strife and struggle rage on all over the world. Such conflict is an ancient theme and yet it remains in full force illustrating that it is a core feature of human life. The shutdown of government in the U.S. is a prime example. As might be expected at this juncture of civilization, where technology progressively challenges traditional lines of division and consequent cultural differences, the birth pains of the steadily emerging global village ensue. According to the general indication of planetary alignments, simple solutions are unlikely anytime soon. In fact, the overall pattern points to a steady rise in this revolutionary juncture. Next week’s Full Moon in Aries should illustrate this point quite clearly. Stay tuned…

A series of conflicting planetary alignments is challenging everyone somehow. For you the focus is squarely on relationships and the process of creating harmony. This is at times harder than at others, like now. Cultural activities, travel and adventure are ideal outlets. Still, anticipate rapidly changing moods so that you don’t get stuck in any one of them. Clearing the old to make way for the new is a feature of a larger plan to create a new quality of health, harmony and flow. This may well include renovations and make overs of some kind. You feel the need to cover a lot of bases these days and may feel that you are working double time. Pace yourself because this momentum is likely to increase yet. A mixed bag of energies is a current challenge. You are excited to spend quality time with friends yet you have to give more than usual. Thankfully your energy levels remain high. Your focus stands to become extra sharp as the month progresses. This will produce new and exciting insights. In some respects you want to go big and far. A good deal of activity and focus on the home front is keeping you busy. Some of it is very sobering, perhaps even depressing. Yet, you may feel excited as well. Ideally you feel determined to expand or advance your position somehow. Yet, to succeed you may have to break free of traditional approaches and the expectations of others. A busy time continues. Yet, you may be able and will want to mix in cultural activity and perhaps travel opportunities. In some respects you are in a strong cycle. Using this energetic wave to further your position is likely and ideal. Yet, you are challenged to be flexible and versatile to tend to the scope and range of ‘busy-ness’. Building upon new foundations continues. This dynamic may be happening ‘to you’ as much as they are based on your own choices and actions. A steady flow of work behind the scenes is featured. This includes a steady and perhaps steep learning curve. Fortunately, you are in the mood to delve into some studies and practical, experiential learning as well.

Circumstances of late are moving you to turn over a new leaf, or two. You may feel pushed and not simply invited. This is spurring some rather revolutionary thoughts, attitudes and/or actions. These may be a source of strife in your more intimate relationships. The results may even be explosive or at least transformational at home. A progressive shift in your values and priorities may be apparent now. You are experiencing a change of heart. Expressing yourself in new and imaginative ways is a source of inspiration. Yet your rational is based on health and healing as well. Either way, you feel compelled to look to the future with an expansive eye where you can express your unique qualities. A diverse array of associations is keeping you busy. Interactions with others are spliced with inspiration, excitement, drama and upset. Fortunately you are in a sporting mood. Yet this also means that you want to ‘play’ and that you want to win. Whether or not the stakes are high you are in a competitive mood. How far will you go? Your ambitions are running high once again. Yet, the twist in the plot asks that you dedicate your energies and focus to causes and/or daily activities for the sake of others. Private meetings with other key power players have a serious tone. You are seeking real talent. You want to express your own and want to enlist those of others. You have reached a peak in your journey. The results are probably mixed. In some respects you have reason to feel excited about the future and proud of your achievements. Yet, you may also feel an extra weight of responsibility to persevere through some challenging terrain. Significant others may be pushing you against your will. Accept their challenge and assert to meet it. Somehow you are in the midst of the beginning of the end. The lure of new opportunities and adventures are strong. A learning curve that demands commitment is the payment due. The work load of late has likely been large and this will continue. Gaining a scope of the bigger picture over the long term feels important. Meditate to receive guidance from within.

You know your child best. You know your child’s favourite doll and every other precious detail of their life. But there’s one thing you can’t know: how well they see.
