Suspects sought in explosion case

Red Bluff residents were evacuated after an explosive was deliberately set. Around 4 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 Quesnel RCMP received a report of an explosion in a driveway at a residence in the Red Bluff area. Police investigation has revealed that an explosion was detonated in the back of a pickup truck parked in the driveway. This explosion resulted in substantial damage to the vehicle. A window in the front of the residence was also damaged by the blast. Fortunately, no one was injured by the explosion. The explosion created significant noise and force which woke neighbours in the area. Six homes in the immediate vicinity were evacuated as a safety precaution. The scene has been secured and RCMP are awaiting specialists from the RCMP’s

Explosive Disposal Unit and Specialized Forensic Identification Services. There is no indication to link this incident with the discovery of discarded dynamite at the city’s landfill earlier this week. Police investigation revealed the explosion was intentionally set. However, this was not a random act. RCMP continue to work on this case to identify suspects and to bring the person(s) responsible to justice. Anyone with any information call the General Investigation Section of the Quesnel RCMP at 250-992-9211immediately. If you wish to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477). With Crimestoppers you do not need to provide your name and you do not have to testify in court. Crimestoppers pays up to $2,000 in cash reward for information leading to an arrest and charge.

Good day, Quesnel. Thanks for reading — and that includes loyal subscriber Seth Reddemann! To join the Observer family, please call 250-992-2121 and ask for circulation.

RCMP are stating foul play is NOT suspected in the case of missing 21-year-old, Caitlin Murray from Quesnel. Murray was last seen on video surveillance Sept. 30 at approximately 12:45 a.m. walking onto the Fraser River footbridge. Quesnel RCMP, Quesnel Search and Rescue and RCMP Air Services have searched the immediate area including the footbridge, the Fraser River, surrounding parks and riverbanks. Police investigation and search efforts to date have met with negative results and have been unable to locate Murray. Aerial search efforts will continue periodically in attempts to provide answers to the family who still remain hopeful. RCMP have followed up on a number of tips and determined that the last known sighting of Murray was captured on video surveillance of her walking onto the footbridge. She was by herself at that time.

The rain didn't dampen the spirits of the delegation from Shiraoi, but it did stop them from golfing. The mayor of Shiraoi, Ahiko Toda came with the 11-person delegation, the first time in over a decade the mayor of Shiraoi has come to Quesnel. Mayors Mary Sjostrom and Toda took the chance to meet and discuss the future of the 32 year-old relationship between the cities. “We had a good opportunity to discuss the future of the twinning as a city and with all our partners,” Sjostrom said. Toda enjoyed his time here in Quesnel, taking interest in our history as he toured the museum. “I’m impressed by Quesnel’s history and want to see more,” he said. He noted the similarities between the two city’s histories and the interactions

with native cultures; Shiraoi has an Ainu village/museum which commemorates the culture of the Ainu people, the native people of Hokkaido. He was also surprised, he said, by our base of volunteers. “The people of Quesnel are very involved in their volunteer societies,” he said. The delegation arrived Oct. 3 and was greeted by their billets and Mounties in red serge, who were happy to take pictures with the delegation. Friday was full of activity. The day started with a tour of West Fraser Mills, before the delegation split in two – one half went shopping while the other met with city officials at City Hall. After lunch, the delegation visited the college, before going to play soccer at the QYSA’s facilities. The day ended with a visit to the Art

Gallery and the Garden at the Arts and Rec Centre and a dinner together hosted by the city. A couple of outdoor activities were cancelled due to rain on Saturday, including a walk on the River Front Trail and a round of golf at the Quesnel Golf Course. The delegation did , however, still get to go to the museum, the Farmer’s Market and visit Moose Meadows Farm. Organizers were happy with the weekend and are looking forward to 2015, when the Twinning Society has agreed to send, and welcome, a delegation from Quesnel to Shiraoi. Doug Jameson, a member of the Twinning Society, said the society is currently trying to bump up membership in the group as members are flagging. He hopes to have more support by 2015.

CRD seeks input on budget

SHANNON STEVER Observer Reporter The Cariboo Regional District held their annual town hall with a focus on making the Cariboo an even more socially, economically and environmentally desirable region to live, work and play. One of the highlights of the meeting was the Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Hospital district, which provides capital funding for hospital facilities and equipment in our region. The CCRHD contributes 40 per cent to capital projects while the health authority provides 60 per cent. In 2000, a 10 year capital plan to avoid borrowing was adopted, saving approximately $1.5M per year in financing costs. The current allocation for recreation was also discussed, which is currently at 26 per cent, or $10.9M, with $6.96M devoted to general recreation and 3.98M for the library, with branches in Williams Lake, Quesnel and 100 Mile House, as well as 12 com-

munity libraries throughout the electoral areas. Environmental services accounted for 20 per cent of the budget, or $8.2M, which includes 14 landfills and 16 transfer stations, as well as 108 Mile Ranch subdivision garbage collection, waste reduction and recycling initiatives and Invasive Plant Management. Protective services accounted for 16 per cent, or $6.8M, which includes 911 telephone systems, emergency planning, central Cariboo Search and Rescue, as well as 14 volunteer fire departments. CRD contracts with some First Nations and member municipalities for fire protection. Other services by some departments include First Responder services in conjunction with BC Ambulance, Ice Rescue, and Highway Rescue. Two new services to be added are the South Cariboo and West Chilcotin SAR (Search and Rescue), approved for the 2014 budget. Also discussed was the administrative/governance budget, which currently

stands at 12 per cent or $5.1M, which includes administration (including municipalities), electoral area administration (excluding municipalities), governance and feasibility studies within the municipalities and electoral areas. The water budget, including systems in Lac La Hache, Forest Grove, Alexis Creek, 108 Mile Water, Central Alexis Creek, Russet Bluff, Canim Lake and Horse Lake, was earmarked at six per cent or $2.7M. Development budget was placed at 6per cent or $2.4M, which includes planning, bylaw enforcement, and building inspection. Sewer services were earmarked at 4% or $1.5M, with systems managed in Lac La Hache, Pine Valley, Wildwood, Alexis Creek and Red Bluff. Airport services, which include the South Cariboo Regional Airport (108 Mile Ranch), Anahim Lake Airport (Chilcotin) and the Likely Airstrip (Central Cariboo) were at three per cent or $1.1M, with objec-

tives to maintain Transport Canada Certification at Anahim Lake and encourage aircraft hanger development at the South Cariboo Regional Airport. Other services, which include grants for assistance, heritage, street lighting, and economic development as well as financial contributions to the South and North Cariboo Transit, North & Central Cariboo Cemeteries and Central Cariboo Victim Services, were earmarked at two per cent or $0.7M. Also discussed were the next steps for the MultiCentre, with public information sessions scheduled for Oct. 15 at Red Bluff Elementary School, and Oct. 17 at Quesnel City Hall Council Chambers. All of the public information sessions start at 7 p.m. Advance polls for the referendum are Oct. 30 at CD Hoy Room, City Hall, as well as Nov. 4 at the same location. Polls open 8 a.m – 8 p.m. The official referendum date is Nov. 9. (All figures are from the 2013 budget).

MAYOR’S MESSAGE ways in the future. I want to thank my council, who have been so supportive of my role in covering many local events when I was unable to attend. To our city staff who are a great team for all the work they do every day, not only supporting city council but the residents of this wonderful city. To my husband and friends, I also want to say thank you. I could not have done this job without your support. Many wonder exactly what UBCM does as an organization. The board of 21 elected officials represent all local governments (regional districts and municipalities both large and small) and five First Nations (190 members) for the province. We are a policy and advocacy group

who carries forth the endorsed will of local government. The board meets four times a year and supports eight committees including our annual convention and resolutions. It was a very good experience sitting as a UBCM representative on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) board, which works on behalf of all provinces and territories across Canada. This is a large board of 68 members. The UBCM’s achievement awards saw our region and city honoured with the partnership award on the work done on the reconciliation project with our local First Nations bands. CRD director Ted Armstrong was honoured for his 35 years of service to local government along with six other leaders who have served 25 years. As outgoing president of UBCM I received a lifetime membership which

is a great honour. The week was completed by joining the advisory group for the Order of BC in Victoria. There were 13 individuals honoured for their outstanding contribution to our province by Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon and Premier Christy Clark. Among the recipients was Dr. Charles Jago from Prince George. My role will now be to support the new president and board as past president and turn my focus back to our city full time as we have lots of work to do here at home. We will be hosting workshops and meetings on secondary suites, water and sewer options for nonserviced areas as well as our fall council strategic planning session. The community information sessions on the upcoming referendum on the borrowing bylaw for

the North Cariboo Multi-Centre will be hosted by the city and the Cariboo Regional District in various locations throughout our region. I encourage all residents to attend at least one of these sessions, however, if you are unable to get to the meetings, please direct your questions to the City of Quesnel at 250-992-2111, the Cariboo Regional District at 1-800665-1636 or email cityhall@quesnel.ca. Do you have a question for Mayor Mary Sjostrom? E-mail it to us at newsroom@ quesnelobserver.com and we’ll forward it to the Mayor so she can answer it in an upcoming column.

The TFSA: A Flexible Savings Choice The Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) is frequently called “a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) for everything else beyond retirement.” Unlike with an RRSP, you can access the money in your TFSA with no tax consequences for any need, and the amounts withdrawn are added back to your contribution limit amount in the following year. Any Canadian resident who has reached the age of majority can contribute up to $5,500* annually to a TFSA. But when should you consider this type of savings plan? A TFSA may be useful if: • You are a younger investor. If you are currently in a low tax bracket and expect to be in a higher bracket in the future, contributing to a TFSA may be best for you. RRSPs offer tax savings if your income is in a higher tax bracket when you contribute to the plan and in a lower bracket when you withdraw. By contributing to a TFSA while in a low tax bracket, your investments grow tax free. When your tax rate is higher, you can withdraw funds from your TFSA to contribute to an RRSP and reduce more of your future taxes. Also, you are able to reclaim the amount you withdraw toward your TFSA annual contribution limit in the following year. • You are an established saver. If you have limited contribution room or have maximized your annual RRSP contributions and are looking for ways to save more for retirement, a TFSA can help complement your retirement plan. In addition, you can give your spouse money that he or she can then use to contribute to a TFSA without affecting your TFSA contribution room or attracting income attribution. • You are transitioning to retirement. The TFSA can offer you tax-free income during retirement, which may help diversify your income stream. You can hold accounts with differing tax treatments in order to help smooth out your tax liabilities. • You are retired. Unlike with an RRSP, there is no requirement to close your TFSA at age 71. In addition, you can continue to contribute to a TFSA even though you may no longer be eligible to make RRSP contributions. • You are interested in preserving your financial legacy. The TFSA allows you to directly name a beneficiary. Upon your death, your TFSA assets can pass directly to your beneficiary tax free and also avoid probate. As always, please consult your tax advisor or estateplanning lawyer and your financial advisor. If you’re looking for a flexible savings vehicle, take another look at the TFSA. You might like what you see. Edward Jones, its employees and Edward Jones advisors cannot offer tax or legal advice. You should consult a qualified tax specialist or lawyer for professional advice regarding your situation.

Bully tactics

ttention employers, you have less than a month to establish policies around bullying and harassment, or face the wrath of WorkSafe B.C. If you noticed the irony in that statement, good, because it’s just so ironic that one of the biggest bullies in the province is going to dictate anti-bullying policy to the rest of us. Oct. 1 WorkSafe announced policy changes on bullying and harassment. It defines bullying and harassment as any action which: • includes any inappropriate conduct or comment by a person towards a worker that the person knew or reasonably ought to have known would cause that worker to be humiliated or intimidated; • excludes any reasonable action taken by an employer or supervisor relating to the management and direction of workers or the place of employment. Most of us understand that WorkSafe is trying to educate the working public that bullying and harassment are unacceptable. WorkSafe does not plan an “enforcement blitz.” Rather, the provincial body will respond to enquiries and complaints – but not all – and will rely on inspectors to ferret out workplace bullies. As well, a victim first needs to file an in-house report before any action, if any, is taken by WorkSafe. We wonder how that will go over when you hand the complaint to the supervisor who’s named in the same report? The other difficulty we have in WorkSafe overseeing this is its own track record. We’ve read far too many stories about injured workers who feel “bullied” by WorkSafe in regard to how they’re treated by case workers, the massive amount of paperwork they’re expected to complete when they’re not well, or even WorkSafe’s overruling of family doctors’ advice for their own patients. We would rather have WorkSafe inspectors looking for unsafe practices that can result in real physical harm to employees. This is a tangible goal and that’s what they do best. –Black Press

Open letter to Ellen DeGeneres

D

ear Ellen, Open letters seem to be a hot trend right now, so I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon and give you a little piece of my mind. Sixteen years ago you publicly came out of the closet and played out some of your real-life experiences on my favorite sitcom “Ellen.” In doing so, you exposed us all to your controversial lifestyle and introduced gay issues into the plot-lines. You even dared to kiss Laura Dern on prime time television – and not on the cheek either. On the lips. I realize it’s a little belated, but I just wanted to take this opportunity to publicly express my concern regarding your bold display. Do you really think we were ready for that? Do you have any idea what kind of impact that has had on North American society and beyond? Same sex couples are now getting married, for heaven’s sake. Coming out of the closet has apparently become easier for many homosexuals. And what really amazes me is how

Lori Welbourne

On A Brighter Note most people I know don’t even care if a man is with a man, or a woman is with a woman. Do you think this is good? Do you seriously think accepting and embracing differences in one another, and encouraging people to live and let live is somehow helpful to our world? Because I sure as heck do. You changed my life when you did what you did, Ellen. Not because I’m gay – I’m not. But because you showed a fearlessness that was so brave and beautiful, I literally had tears in my eyes as I knew it was going to have a profound impact on humanity. Thank you. In that moment you made me see how influential a person could be by simply sharing themselves honestly and with humor.

I’m a sensitive person by nature, so it’s taken me years to thicken my skin. I hate to admit this, but it’s not quite as thick as it needs to be yet and I had to channel your courage in some of my weaker moments. I’d like to thank you for that and for continuing to help change the world and make it a happier, healthier, funnier place to live. I made a video specifically directed at you. Some will cringe and accuse me of shameless self-promotion when they watch it. But that’s okay. I refuse to feel shame about promoting something, or someone, I believe in. I also wanted to write this letter so I could publicly wish you a happy sweet 16th anniversary of your coming out. Thankfully for us you’ve stayed out. Keep dancing to the beat of your own drum, Ellen. I will too, even though I have no rhythm. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. Her videos and columns can be found at LoriWelbourne. com.

I understand things weren’t smooth sailing for you after that and millions of people were so threatened by homosexuality and its perceived contribution to the moral decay of society that many of them aimed their fear-based attacks at you. At the time I couldn’t imagine how that must have felt, nor understand how awful it would be to be hated by complete strangers for simply being yourself and standing up for something you believed in. But I get it now. Six weeks ago, for International Go Topless Day and Women’s Equality Day, I wrote a column and made a video in support of women having the constitutional right to go topless wherever men can go topless. While I received a tremendous amount of support for my interview with the Mayor of Kelowna, I also received an astounding number of negative reactions from people all over the world, some so vile and misogynistic it was shocking.

Nothing to lose – everything to gain N

ovember 9 should be of great interest to all of us that call Quesnel home. You may wonder why I say that – on November 9 there is a very important referendum to vote on. The question asked will be: if you support an extension of the loan authorization bylaw approved following the successful 2008 MultiCenter referendum for an additional two years. Quesnel cares about recreation, not just for ourselves, but we consider

Letters to the Editor

Mary Glassford

GUEST VIEWS others as well. Recreation is not only about sports events, it is what we do in our spare time for enjoyment regardless of the venue, the library, river front trails, skiing, the list could go on. It isn’t always about

whether or not we will use a facility personally; it is always about community. History shows many were opposed to the River Front Trails, yet who hasn’t used them at one time or another. The recreation center was the first facility built through Sub-Regional Recreation in the early 1980s. After the successful referendum of 1988, other facilities built included the second ice surface, arts center, Alex Fraser Park grandstand and agriculture building.

I hope all of the citizens for sub-regional recreation remember that success was due to everyone pulling together. No one considered their personal wants or whose was more important. Now, more than ever, we need to consider what being a community involves. One little thing can make a difference: the track at Correlieu or the motion sensor lights at Helen Dixon site. Nov. 9, when you vote, think about this community called home.

When new business or industry look to invest they look to see what amenities are offered. A yes vote for an additional two years will allow fundraising to continue and the opportunity to receive another grant perhaps from the federal government. Nothing to lose – everything to gain. Revisiting the 2008 referendum is not the question – only an extension of 2 years. Everyone that has used or visited Quesnel knows we need to replace the

arena. How long have we known – 20+ years? When looking back through the referendum information from 1988 the arts centre was designed to accommodate a 500 seat theatre, 25 years have gone by since that referendum. Let’s continue to move forward. Mary Glassford is a long-term Quesnel resident, former Cariboo Regional District director and city councilor and president of the Post Secondary Education Council.

Fewer electrical fires in B.C.: study

TOM FLETCHER Black Press Completion of BC Hydro’s smart meter program has coincided with a continued decline in electrical fires in the province, according to a new analysis of records from the B.C. Office of the Fire Commissioner. Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis has been tracking residential fire statistics since 2010, for his work as adjunct professor of criminology at the University of the Fraser Valley. After successfully pushing for a 2006 law allowing fire departments to find indoor marijuana grow operations by their electrical usage, Garis has continued to assess the effects of BC Hydro’s smart grid program on preventing fires. Adding another year of fire statistics, from June 2012 to June 2013, shows a continued decline in electrical fires, including those related to illegal electrical bypasses and hot grow lamps found to be connected with illegal marijuana growing. Garis noted that the data show electrical fires of all sorts account for only a small part of all structure fires in B.C. Out of 1,801 total residential fires in the latest year available, 150 were found to be caused by electrical discharge. That’s a 12.3 per cent decline since 2011, when the smart meter program began. The reports show that over three years, only one fire originated on an exterior wall, ignited

by an electrical panel board. That was in 2011, before smart meter installation began. There have been no fires attributed to the meter program, with 1.8 million wireless meters installed. Fires caused by

illegal meter bypasses dropped from eight in 2011 to six in 2012 to only three in 2013. BC Hydro has reported that installers located and removed illegal bypasses around the province as part of the smart meter

program, and also replaced 1,200 meter bases found to be faulty. Garis said the results clearly show that people should not worry about their electrical meters, and pay attention to by far the largest

Although it’s commonly accepted that oil and antifreeze are

sources of house fires: cooking and smoking. The statistics show that cooking-related fires are on the increase, even as total residential fires have declined in B.C. Of 1,998 total fires reported in 2011, 575 were ignited by

cooking equipment. In 2013, total fires declined to 1,801 but the number of cooking fires rose to 621. Fires caused by smoking declined by 11 per cent for 2013, but there were still 302 fires ignited by

smoking materials. Garis said the statistic of most concern is that 79 per cent of people who died in fires, whatever the source, were in a home without a working smoke detector.

Since the launch of the program in 2003, British Columbians have done an exceptional job of recycling their used oil materials.

BCUOMA is expanding its successful ambassador program this summer – with two teams of ambassadors touring the province to educate and raise awareness of the importance of used oil and antifreeze recycling. Quesnel Women’s Fall Challenge

Quesnel’s 20th Annual Women’s Fall Challenge, Oct. 6, drew 639 women to participate with four 6-year-olds and three 80+year-olds. Lillian Bow, 94, was wheeled through the 5k event by her daughters. Although many came prepared for rain, it held off for the duration of the event. The Quesnel Women’s Fall Challenge raises money each year for the G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital mammography unit. Currently they are holding money raised in trust for a digital reading machine. Karen Powell and Greg Strebel photos

A show from the artist’s heart ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

Ann Nicholson is no stranger to social activism. The current show in the Quesnel Art Gallery, Chilcotin War, a colonial legacy offers 16 paintings presenting Nicholson’s interpretation of what she knows of that time in the CaribooChilcotin history. She was born in South Africa and was involved with the anti-apartheid movement, even to the point of being jailed for her activities. “I was aware of the colonial set up and experience,” she said. After moving to Canada, Nicholson lived in Vancouver where the colonial experience didn’t present itself to her, however when she moved to Alexis Creek in the Chilcotin, it became apparent. Through teaching at Stone Reserve, discussions with local people and research on the Chilcotin history and the effects of colonialism, a picture began to emerge for Nicholson and images took shape in her mind. One of the most profound influences on Nicholson’s work was local author Tom Swanky’s book The True Story of Canada’s “War” of Extermination on the Pacific which tracks the colonial rule on Canada’s Pacific Coast. The suggestion is the then Governor Douglas used smallpox as a weapon to kill local First Nations in lieu of treaties or paying for land. After a catastrophic decimation of the local people in 1861-63, British Columbia subjugated and dispossessed the depopulated First Nations through small wars billed as policing and by hanging several natives resisting colonialism, including five Tsilhoqot’in chiefs ambushed at a peace conference in 1964. “It was difficult to

Ann Nicholson with one of her 16 paintings in the current Quesnel Art Gallery show. Annie Gallant photo read, shocking and painful,” Nicholson said. She admitted she’s still struggling to read the book. As a result of what she’s learned and researched, the artist was inspired to paint a picture. “Each story tells a terrible tale,” she said. “My show is sequential and each of the 16 pieces are illustrative of the text that goes with it.” Somewhat abstract, her work contains elements relative to her interpretation with colourful panels and striking images. She said the first painting was regarding the possibility of a high school being built over an executed man’s grave. Another

speaks to a young First Nations woman’s experience when she was put aboard a ship on the coast and repeatedly raped (prostitution was considered fair exchange for food and sustenance). Once her father finally rescued her from the boat she was so badly damaged she couldn’t walk. And image after image tumbled from her mind. “I didn’t realize the images would come so easily and so frequently,” she said. Nicholson is very cognizant these stories are First Nation’s stories but also believes she is part of the collective ethnic colonization of the area and has a right to tell her

interpretation of this history. She works in several different media and finds some more capable of independence from political statements, but says when she picks up a paint brush her thread of conviction flows easier than her nonobjective pieces. After her work was showcased in Williams Lake, Nicholson was pleased with the support she received from some in the First Nation community. It was suggested she take the show on the road. So far, Chilcotin War has been shown four times, however with the nature of the show Nicholson isn’t sure where her work will find a home. This show is almost an installation where each piece relates to all the others. Nicholson is currently working on a series of mandalas (a Hindu ritual symbol representing the universe in a circular form) focusing on the environment. “It’s about the demise but also hope for the future of our environment,” she said. The show runs to Oct. 26 and gallery hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday. Chilcotin War, a colonial legacy is sponsored by Nazko First Nation.

A Glimpse of History 50 yeArs AGo october 3, 1963 Development of New town Well to start “Decision to have an immediate start made on the development of a new well to expand town water supplies was made on Tuesday night after town council reviewed a proposal made by H.A. Hainstock of International Water Supply, the firm that has already put in three wells here. Total cost of the project will be approximately $34,000. Mr. Hainstock gave an estimate of $8,350 for a test drilling program. Cost of a producing a well of 700 gallons a minute capacity was quoted $25,935. A survey of Highways Department test drilling undertaken prior to construction of the new Quesnel River Bridge, indicates a potential well site on the East side of the Quesnel River, and it is here that the initial test Drilling will be undertaken. Council members favoured this proposal since it would provide an entirely new water source and end the possibility of a complete water failure should a major break occur in the supply main from West Quesnel. Mr. Hainstock assured council that men and equipment are available at once.” ”This Column is to highlight our 50th Anniversary

Colourful leaves and a grey sky

Under a grey, rainy sky, over wet, treacherous ground, QJS and Correlieu runners hit the trails around Ten Mile Lake. “The 10 Mile Lake race was indeed a significant challenge because it is the hilliest and most challenging course they will run all season, especially in the pouring rain. Fortunately, such conditions mirror the conditions that are all too often the norm at the Provincial Championships in early November,” QJS coach Scott Trueman said. Both teams had great performances, with the only downside to the day being the soggy conditions. Trueman was very happy with his team’s results. “I would have to say this is undoubtedly the strongest

QJS cross-country team in five years. We have a good shot at making it to the Provincial Championships with two teams both boys and girls. Trueman had good reason to be excited about his team’s performance, as QJS’s Olivia Baptiste took first overall for the girls, grades 8–12, as well as first in her category, juvenile girls. In bantam girls, Avery Drew won silver, Lyra Jonasson won bronze, Raechel Fowler was fifth and Cassidy Giesbrecht was sixth. In bantam Boys, Brett Mero won gold and Braeden Smith won bronze. Racing up to the competitive senior boys category, Dane Jacobsen

was fifteenth and Liam Matzner eighteenth. Lucus Martins, Brennan Schwartz, and Austin Voigt all finished in the top 30 out of a large field of male runners. The Correlieu Clan likewise had a positive experience, aside from the weather. “I was really pleased with the team, especially the junior girls,” Correlieu coach, Pat Marsh said. “They are improving in every race.” Kyra Teetzen finished second in junior girls despite running spikeless over the slippery trails. Bayley McGillivray and Mia Kozak were close behind, finishing fourth and fifth respectively, a great accomplishment in their first year cross country running. Brea Wood

followed in sixth. Kim Rutledge and Amanda Albers sat the race out due to injuries, but hope to be back for zones to round out the required five-member team. Cole Dinsdale finished third in the senior boys category, and is, according to Marsh, running very well and gets closer to the College Heights runner ahead of him every race. Dylan Cathcart finished in 13, with his eye on improving for provincials. Konrad Teetzen was injured and didn’t finish the race. The boys are hoping they can slip in for second place at zones as a team, since Jon Richardson and Brodey Lamarche have joined the team to give it five runners.

Clockwise from top left: Braeden Smith crosses the finish line; (From left to right) Konrad Teetzen, Jon Richardson and Cole Dinsdale started the race running together; runners wind their way through a canyon of trees; Olivia Baptise crosses the finish line; volunteers watch participants prepare to start in the downpour.

Opening (washroom) doors JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter

Allison Duddy, centre, is joined by (from left) Gordon Reid, Dan Canuel of Community Foundation, Mayor Mary Sjostrom, Bob Lebec of Quesnel Community Foundation and Linda Woods of New Floors in the new, accesible washroom.

The Curling Club started their season off by celebrating their renovated, accessible washrooms. “They’re dedicated to Allison Duddy, for her amazing success over her short time playing, but they’ll benefit the whole community,” vice-president for the club, Gord Reid said. Reid emphasized the new washrooms will make the club better for everyone. The club has had problems with its bathrooms in the past, as they have not been allowed to host special needs students during their school programs due to the lack of washrooms. These washrooms will allow those students to join in on the fun with their classmates. The club also hosts a strong base of seniors and a Special Olympics team, who will benefit from the enhanced usability of the washrooms. For her part, Duddy is happy her club will now be easier for her to navigate. “I really appreciate what everyone at the curling club, Gord Reid and Rick Wager in particular, and everyone who donated from the community have done,” Duddy said.

Reid and Wager spearheaded the project, putting in hundreds of volunteer hours to make the plans a reality. Those volunteer hours were supported by the community. “As a non-profit organization and a club that operates on its membership, it’s hard to do these renovations without the help of the community,” club coordinator Dave Plant said. “For these washrooms to take place, it says a lot about our community.” The bathrooms are the second phase in a four-stage plan to make the club accessible to all Gold Pan residents. The first stage was the installation of an automated door at the front of the club. The club hopes to continue the renovations by adding an elevator to make the second floor accessible to everyone and complete the renovations with a renovation of the upstairs washroom. The opening marks the beginning of the curling season for the club. Tuesday, the first league games will take place to officially open the season. Plant said the season is shaping up well, with a stable base of players coming back from last year and a couple extra bonspiels making their way through town.

ear continues to have all the right answers for Blue Collar as they started off strong, sagged in the middle and Steve Dodge then peaked at the end in a 4-2 PAPERBACK WRITER victory. The opening goal came thanks to the most exciting play in hockey as Ian (Heartbreaker) Hannah was awarded a penalty shot after an AWOL stick entered the fray while he was on a breakaway. (Heartbreaker) made no mistake as he scored his first of three on a nifty deke. The Bear lead was doubled when Brody (Howdy) Neighbour found Dan (Can do it) Lowndes alone in front for his first of the season. With the BCS captain upset by his squad being shut-out for three consecutive periods by the ferocious Bear defence, he stacked a line that wasted little time erasing the goose egg as Jim (Soupy) Sales swatted one in. A couple of shifts later Chad (The Comet) Swanson knotted the score thanks to a terrific assist by (King) Richard Lindstrom who also drew a helper on his squad’s first tally. With the going getting tough, it was time to call in the big gun and (Heartbreaker) made no mistake as he pranced around the BCS zone to collect his second and third of the morning on one incredible shift. The other contest saw a battle to stay out of the FHL cellar as Serenity tried to slam the door on the Chevy Crew but Fraser Rivers resilience was too much as they clawed out to win by a 4-2 score. Giving the Builders the early lead was Dave (Chainsaw) McCulloch who notched his first of the season and 37th of his FHL career, which is slightly behind his penalty pace. Also scoring for Serenity was Lee (Nitro) Naeth who is obviously not fully recovered from his hunting trip to the Spatsizi. Cueing the comeback for GM was Colin Keis (To Rebecca), Glen (Pillars of the Earth) Boudreau and Kevin (Eye of the Needle) Hesslegrave who all scored and assisted on another. Collecting his first points of the season was Randy (Hammer of Eden) Crofts who is looking forward to the new tie breaking sudden death shoot-out format just announced. This week in Season 12 (2005) saw Russ (Egg Foo) Young score a half dozen goals and add two assists as Clint (Make my Day) Winchester notched six (or was that seven, punk) points in Green’s 14-8 shoot-out over Gold. –Steve Dodge is a defensive winger with Bear Communications and an Observer contributor

WE HAVE THE HEART – WE NEED A HOME

NOW IS OUR TIME It is up to us, the residents of Quesnel, to raise the funds to build our Multi-Centre and now is our time. By supporting the North Cariboo Multi-Centre you are investing in the future of our community in so many ways.

It’s easy - here is how individuals and companies can help: • Buy a seat for $250, dedicate it to someone you love or as a legacyif every seat sold, we would raise $500,000; • Buy a piece of the North Cariboo Nature Mural starting at $25; • Sponsor the theatre; • Sponsor a room in the multi-centre; • Make a donation. Many packages have been delivered to businesses and individuals. If you are ready to make your donation or would like more information, please call Carol @ 250-991-2878 or Bernice 250-747-1727.
