It’s safe to say Dudley is one lucky duck. Thanks to some talented people who have volunteered their time to help, the one-footed fowl may soon find out what it’s like to be bipedal. Dudley, a call duck, belongs to K9-1-1 Animal Rescue and Services owner Debbie Fortin. She says the duckling lost his foot in an attack by some “vicious chickens.” But he survived and has adapted to life at the shelter. “It doesn’t have the same quality of life but it doesn’t know any better – he’s very mobile, he just gets around differently,” said Fortin. “He hasn’t got the activity level of a normal duckling, but he swims amazingly well. He’s figured out his own little rudder system.” Fortin says she was comfortable in letting Dudley follow his own path. But her son, Brandon Schweitzer, thought of a way to help the duckling get back on both feet. He contacted friend Terence Loring, a mechanical engineer who recently started his own company in Kamloops, 3 Pillar Designs. Loring specializes in 3D architecture and design, but Schweitzer’s story about Dudley convinced Loring to visit Sicamous

n Work is underway to utilize 3D-printing technology to create Dudley the duckling a new foot. and pay Dudley a visit. Loring said he could see that it was causing the duckling pain to walk around on the injured stump, and decided to take on the challenge of creating a prosthetic leg/ foot using 3D printing technology. “It’s a little out of my usual experience, but I’m very excited to see the final product and see if we can help this little animal out,” said Loring. “There might be that chance where there’s other animals in
similar situations, and if this could inspire people to kind of think outside of the box this could be a great thing.” Loring is working on the design. To do the printing, he managed to partner with Canadian company Proto3000. Both are volunteering their time on this project. “Proto3000 is a 3D engineering and printing company,” said Loring. “They were wanting to know about the background as
well so I made a video to explain this little duckling’s story. I’ve got the preliminary design of the leg done and we’re just looking at different materials and different designs.” Loring notes the work he’s doing is not precedent setting, that there was a case in the U.S. where another company was able to create a prosthetic leg for an older duck with a 3D printer. So he knows it’s possible. And, he adds, once he has a working 3D model, he’ll

be able to easily resize it to create larger legs for Dudley as he gets older. All this effort for Dudley has come as a bit of a shock for Fortin, who is delighted all the same. “He was managing to get around so we wouldn’t kill him – he survived and that’s the way it is.” Fortin expects Dudley’s new leg/foot will be ready in the coming weeks. And, even if it isn’t a success, she expects he’ll get by just fine.

n A speedboat ended up embedded inside a houseboat after a collision in July 2010. Now, the lawyer for the accused driver is suggesting he will apply to have the case thrown out of court due to unreasonable delays.
Delays with fatal speedboat case could threaten trial By Martha Wickett
market news staff
Time may become a crucial factor in the court case involving a fatal boat crash in 2010 on Shuswap Lake. During a pretrial conference last week, Ken Walker, defence lawyer for the accused, Leon Michael Reinbrecht, said he might apply to have the charges thrown out because of time delays. Reinbrecht stands charged with criminal negligence causing death and criminal negligence causing bodily harm, following the crash in Magna Bay on July 3, 2010 that left an 18-foot Campion Runabout speedboat fully embedded inside the cabin of a houseboat. The owner and operator of the house-
boat, 53-year-old Kenneth William (Kenny) Brown of Chase, was killed in the crash. Eight other people were taken to hospital in Kamloops, where two remained for treatment and six were released the next day. The crash took place as boats were leaving the bay following the annual Canada Day weekend fireworks display. Crown counsel Don Mann confirms that at the pretrial conference, defence counsel indicated “they may be bringing a charter application related to that (time delays)… They were just advising us and the court.” Reinbrecht was charged in December 2011 following a 17-month investigation carried out by the
Chase RCMP detachment with the assistance of investigators from Transport Canada and the BC Coroners Service. The decision regarding charges took 17 months because of the copious quantities of evidence to sift through, police said. More recently, the trial date was pushed back from September of this year until January of next in order for the defendant to try to secure legal aid funding. If an application under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is made to drop the charges, both sides would present their arguments and evidence regarding the delays and a judge would be asked to decide. The trial is set for Jan. 6, 2014.

Mussel infestation narrowly averted By Joe Fries
BLACK PRESS
An unexpected parental leave was partly to blame for a near-miss in the Shuswap that could have caused the depletion of fish species the likes of which agencies are working hard to prevent. The threat at Shuswap Lake in July 2012 appeared in the form of thumbnail-size quagga mussels attached to a boat arriving from the U.S. Quagga and zebra mussels multiply quickly and spread easily as stowaways in, and on, boats. The mussels cause harm by attaching themselves to in-lake equipment, like dams and water intakes, and washing up on beaches where their shells make walking difficult. They also strain nutrients from water, to the detriment of other aquatic life. A report prepared this year for the Okanagan Basin Water Board estimated the annual cost to taxpayers could hit $40 million in the first few years of an invasion here. To help sink the threat, the Okanagan Basin Water Board launched this summer’s Don’t Move A Mussel awareness campaign aimed at boaters, and is also funding a separate surveillance program. “We think it’s probably one of the most important issues to hit the lake in the last 40 years, so we think it’s important people know about it,” said OBWB executive director Anna Warwick Sears. The OBWB has also
asked the federal government to establish inspection stations at B.C.’s international and interprovincial borders. It might have also prevented the panic at Shuswap Lake that was revealed in documents obtained by Black Press under freedom of information legislation. On June 23, 2012, the primary contact for B.C.’s aquatic invasive species program received an email from counterparts in Idaho warning that a boat contaminated with mussels had just passed through on its way north. Despite the advanced warning, the boat made it into Shuswap Lake, where it was moored for a week before conservation officers ordered its removal on July 3, 2012. That delay had officials worried. “Best case scenario here is that all the mussels were dead and we don’t have a problem,” Ted Down, the B.C. Environment Ministry’s manager of ecosystem protection, wrote in a July 3 email to colleagues. “Worst case would be missing the opportunity to contain viable mussels at the marina and having them become established in Shuswap, resulting in the decimation of fisheries stocks including key sockeye stocks.” Test results later revealed the mussels attached to the boat were dead. Environment Ministry spokesperson Dave Crebo said in a statement the 10-day lag between Idaho issuing the warning and B.C.

n Zebra and quagga mussels could dramatically alter the ecosystems of Okanagan-Shuswap lakes if introduced into local waters. taking action was due to a staffing issue. “The response protocol in place at the time of this incident followed the Columbia River Zebra and Quagga Mussel Rapid Response Plan,” Crebo said. “However, the one provincial staff person tasked with responding, unexpectedly had to depart on parental leave earlier than planned, resulting in a gap of a few days before the backfill staff person was in place.” NDP environment critic Spencer Chandra
Herbert said the incident revealed a gap in the province’s defences against invasive species. “Just one person not being at their job could have put hundreds, if not thousands, of people out of work. That seems like a pretty thin line of defence,” he said. Since the near-miss in the Shuswap the “response protocol has been improved by having additional provincial staff available 24-7 to respond to reports of mussel-infested boats,” Crebo said.

WorkSafe getting tough on bullies Attention employers, you have less than a month to establish policies around bullying and harassment, or face the wrath of WorkSafe B.C. On Oct. 1 WorkSafe announced policy changes on bullying and harassment. It defines bullying and harassment as any action which: a. includes any inappropriate conduct or comment by a person towards a worker that the person knew or reasonably ought to have known would cause that worker to be humiliated or intimidated, but b. excludes any reasonable action taken by an employer or supervisor relating to the management and direction of workers or the place of employment. Bullying and harassment are unacceptable in any environment. But don’t expect WorkSafe B.C. to “save the day” if you’re working in a bad place. WorkSafe does not plan an “enforcement blitz.” Rather, the provincial body will respond to enquiries and complaints – but not all – and will rely on inspectors to ferret out workplace bullies. As well, a victim first needs to file an in-house report before any action – if any – is taken by WorkSafe. The other difficulty we have is WorkSafe’s own track record. We’ve read far too many stories about injured workers who feel “bullied” by WorkSafe in regard to how they’re treated by case workers, the paperwork they’re expected to complete when they’re not well, or even WorkSafe’s overruling of family doctors’ advice for their own patients. We would rather have WorkSafe inspectors looking for unsafe practices that can result in real physical harm to employees. - Campbell River Mirror

Moon still an object of fascination
At some point in time most photographers, not to mention budding astrophotographers, have photographed the moon. The moon has always held a special fascination for me. As a kid I looked up at it in awe and wonder. In my twenties, on Wednesday, July 20, 1969 to be precise, I watched television with countless millions of others as astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon. I think in a way I was as envious as I was amazed. I also think that was when I first developed what has become a lifelong hobby/habit/fascination with taking photographs of the moon. So here are some things that I’ve learned over the years about trying to capture a decent image of the closet extraterrestrial body to planet Earth. First and foremost, you need to use a good, steady, heavy-duty tripod. While relatively well exposed, hand-held images can be attained with today’s cameras, they will likely not be sharp. You need a tripod – it’s that simple. For most images of just the moon, I
The GreaT OuTdOOrS James Murray use a telephoto lens (300 mm at least) which enables me to fill the frame. I use a moderate wide-angle lens (18 mm) to capture panoramic landscapes with the moon hanging somewhere overhead in the sky. While many digital cameras these days have an automatic setting for night shots, you will achieve a much more detailed photo if you set your ISO, shutter speed and aperture settings manually. Start with an ISO of 50 or 100. Remember that the moon is also the light source. It is brighter to your camera’s sensor than you might think. Set the aperture to about f/11 (the higher the aperture, the less sharp the image) and start with an exposure of about 1/60 of a
second. This is only a starting point. You will have to make some fine adjustments to these settings to attain the best exposure for the particular phase of the moon and nighttime sky conditions you are shooting. As for focusing, I find it easier and more precise to use manual focus. Since you will be photographing at night, long exposures are a given. If you ever so slightly underexpose your images, it will allow you to adjust the density and contrast later during post-processing. One should also always keep in mind that as the moon moves across the night sky, your camera will record this movement of the moon in the form of a slight blurring. I like to shoot all the various phases of the moon. What I might miss one week because of clouds and/or the weather, I can always shoot the following cycle. Remember to adjust your exposure accordingly – a longer exposure is required for a quarter or half moon phase than would be needed during the full moon, simply
because a quarter- or halfmoon throws proportionately less light than the full moon. And if I am going to go through all the effort of driving out to an area where there is little or no light pollution, I figure I might as well take shots of the moon at its various positions/stages in the night sky as well. Somewhere along the line I figured out that when the moon is closer to the horizon, it appears larger to the naked eye and therefore to the camera’s lens, due to the magnification effect of the atmosphere combined with the curve of the Earth. For the past couple of years I have shared what limited knowledge I have about astronomy with a number of elementary classrooms here in town. When I show them images of the moon, I sometimes see in their faces the same sense of awe and wonderment that I once felt. When I mention that some of them may one day get to set foot on the moon, that’s when their eyes really light up. Once again, I cannot help but feel a little envious.

Sorrento students cheer for Fred Penner By Cavelle Layes
MARKET NEWS STAff
There were smiles all around as a Canadian icon stopped into Sorrento Elementary School last week. The childhood hero of many, Fred Penner, took some time out of his busy schedule to sing some of his favourite tunes with a gym full of students, teachers and even a few parents. Penner is best known for his CBC show, Fred Penner’s Place, which ran from the 1980s until 1997, with reruns still captivating children years later. He has spent a large portion of his life entertaining and educating children through the use of music, helping them grow and discover their own self confidence. Penner himself was raised on music, explaining that he was introduced to a wide variety of sounds at a young age.
“Music has a therapeutic value,” Penner said, adding that there is no question music helps people in their daily lives. Penner has travelled all over Canada, the U.S. and overseas performing shows for the young as well as the old, noting that some of his favourite performances are actually in front of university students. Penner said he loves to see how even as adults his music still holds a special place in their hearts. His show was a big part of the lives of many ’80s and ’90s children, and as a result they still strongly connect with his performance many years later. While Penner has been doing the job for many years, he said there is no way he is ready to stop. “It is forever,” he said. “When I began I never thought that it would turn into something so big, but there

Fire departments ready to serve Director’s notes Paul Demenok One of the most important services provided through the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is fire suppression. In Area C, I believe that we are very fortunate to have local fire halls that are as well-equipped as any hall in the province, and we have an outstanding group of well-trained volunteer firefighters who are ready to quickly respond to most firerelated emergencies. There are four fire departments within Area C. The Shuswap Fire Department with halls in Sorrento and Blind Bay has nine pieces of major apparatus and 40 volunteer members. Tappen/Sunnybrae Fire Department has three pieces of major apparatus and 26 volunteer members. White Lake Fire Department has two pieces of major apparatus and 20 volunteer members, while Eagle Bay Fire Department has three pieces of major apparatus and 13 volunteer members. Eagle Bay is currently a bit understaffed and is actively recruiting for additional volunteers. Being a volunteer
firefighter is a significant commitment. All volunteers are strongly encouraged to acquire their Basic Firefighters Certificate, which requires about 60 hours of training time, as well as home study, practical and written exams. Ongoing training is a mandatory requirement for all levels of firefighters. It occurs every Tuesday evening at all fire halls in Area C, 52 weeks a year. Important concepts reviewed include: incident command, ventilation, hydrant and water shuttle operations, ropes and knots, communications, ground ladders, hose handling, emergency vehicle operations, pump operation, use of self-contained breathing apparatus, and a myriad of other critical skills. Many members of the Area C fire halls participate in the live fire training exercises held in the spring and fall at the regional training centre in Salmon Arm. With a high proportion of Area C firefighters having good levels of experience and training, several members are live fire instructors at the regional training centre. Area C volunteers have provided a lead role in the Fire Prevention Team and the Fire Prevention Unit, and have provided lead instruction to Emergency Vehicle Operations Training offered regionally. of hours are spent every year by the Area C firefighters in training programs. Thus far in 2013 there have been 212 fire calls in the CSRD, and 96, or 45 per cent of these were within Area C. Call distribution was as follows: Shuswap Fire Department-45, Tappen/Sunnybrae F.D.-40, Eagle Bay F.D.-six and White Lake F.D.-five calls. Key projects in 2013 have included: an evaluation of dry fire hydrants in White Lake; evaluation of a designated superior tanker shuttle service which has the potential to reduce fire insurance rates in White Lake; construction of a hose drying tower at Shuswap Fire Hall #2; paving the parking lot at Eagle Bay Fire Hall; updating the plumbing at White Lake Fire Hall; entering GPS coordinates for all fire hydrants in Area C to improve dispatch-
ing; logging in high fire hazard locations and initiating pre-incident planning for many of these same locations. In 2012, the four fire departments in Area C financially amalgamated with a common tax rate. This has facilitated standardization of equipment and pooling of resources to both reduce expenses and increase efficiencies in mutual aide calls. Public oversight is provided through the Sub-Regional Advisory Committee which meets twice yearly, and includes one volunteer from the public and an alternate for each of the four fire departments. Under the oversight of this committee, standardized compensation plans have been initiated to provide firefighters with basic compensation for both training and live calls. On behalf of all residents in Area C, I would like to thank and con-
gratulate each and every one of the firefighters in our area for their dedication and commitment to keeping all of us safe. It is volunteerism at its very best. If you would like to volunteer to be a fire fighter, please contact Kenn Mount, CSRD fire services coordinator, at 250-8335945.

MPs at work reviewing federal priorities
FRoM the hill Colin mayes I have enjoyed the summer in the Okanagan-Shuswap and being back in the riding office. Parliament has been prorogued until Oct. 16. Just so you know, that does not mean MPs are not back to work, it only means the House of Commons is not sitting. Parliament has been prorogued 126 times in the past 146 years so this is not uncommon. Our government passed a record number of bills during the 2013 spring session and almost cleared the legislative agenda of the ‘Speech from the Throne’ that began the 41st Parliament in 2011. It is time now to reset the priorities of this government and the legislative agenda for the next two years leading up to the 2015 election. I can assure you that we will continue our Economic Action Plan’s ‘Jobs, Growth and Prosperity’ agenda. The Prime Minister has also spoken of our continued “Cracking Down on Crime” agenda with new legislation promised in the fall that will better protect our children from child predators. It is my hope that this fall, the Supreme Court
has served us well during the past economic downturn. I will continue to submit columns to the paper to ensure you are abreast of the issues and
the solutions proposed by your government in Ottawa.

will have completed their review of the government’s questions relating to Senate reform so that we are able to move forward with addressing the future of the Upper House. The good news in August was that revenues received by the Government of Canada were $8 billion higher than projected, so our deficit will be lower this year. I am certain this will ensure our target of a balanced budget by 2015 will be achieved. The Prime Minister during the G20 has tried to persuade member countries to set a target of 25 per cent debt to the GDP so that global economies will be less volatile. Canada has the lowest debt to GDP in the G20 which

Gleneden tied to Finnish heritage
ShuSwap paSSion Jim Cooperman While it is now a rural suburb of Salmon Arm, Gleneden was once a thriving Finnish farming community where residents shared a passion for sports, theatre, potlucks, music and other social activities. According to Hans Kusisto, the son of one of the area’s early Finnish pioneers, it was the first settler, Emerson Bowman, who chose the name Gleneden, as the valley reminded him of a glen back in his native country, England, and he deemed that its paradise nature was like the biblical Eden. Many Finnish immigrants first settled in Salmon Arm where they built a hall on Front Street that had a second floor with sleeping rooms that provided temporary accommodations for single men. According to Salmon Arm historian Ernest Doe, the first surveys in Gleneden were done in 1893 and the first wagon road was built in 1896, primarily for logging. The Finns began to homestead in Gleneden in the early 1900s, including Hans’s father Frank in 1912 and Victor Hill in 1909. By the late 1920s, the majority of the Finnish settlers were living in Gleneden and thus the hall in town was sold and a new community hall was built by volunteers on property donated by the Maki family. The old hall was a single story wooden building with a partial basement for the kitchen. The settlers also built a school, which used the hall for concerts and other gettogethers. Many plays were hosted in the hall, both in Finnish and English. Key to the success of
the community was the volunteer help by local women, who later formed the Gleneden Ladies Club in 1946 under the leadership of Mary Korpi. One of the most popular pastimes at the hall was recreation badminton that included invitational tournaments. By 1930, the Sports Club was formed that sponsored a variety of activities including ski jumping on “Boot Hill” just next to the hall and cross-country racing with homemade skis. Former Olympian Eino Jatteenmaki provided instruction, which helped to increase local enthusiasm. Every winter a standard size hockey rink was built next to the hall. The old hall was shut down by the government during the final years of the Second World War, because Finland had defeated Russia, which was an ally, when it attempted to invade the country. Finns were classified as “enemy aliens” and thus were not allowed to hold group activities. With the Finnish Society disbanded, the Gleneden Community Association formed in 1945 to manage the hall. When the Gleneden School was lost to fire
in 1970, students were bused to Salmon Arm West Elementary. As a result, there were fewer activities at the hall. Three years later, the massive Gleneden fire destroyed the hall, along with many homes and farms. Efforts to rebuild the hall were led by Margaret Lund and Rocky Johnston, with financial help from government grants and insurance and donations of lumber from Federated Co-op. Construction proceeded thanks to the efforts of community volunteers and the new hall was opened in 1975. However, due to changing circumstances, the multitude of recreational opportunities and the current fastpaced, digital society, community activities have seen a decline.
Hans has certainly witnessed the changes, as he explained, “in those early days the hall was strong as we did things together and now most people who live here do not even know each other.” On Nov. 15, there will be an opportunity for music lovers to once again experience the appealing nature of the Gleneden Hall as the legendary Shuffle Demons will be playing for a jazz concert and dance in the same hall they played in 1992 at the first Roots and Blues Festival. Joining them will be the muchloved R&B band, the Salmon Armenians. Tickets for the event, a benefit for the Shuswap Environmental Action Society, will be available soon at Acorn Music in Salmon Arm.

Second hearing planned By Cavelle Layes

A decision on a rezoning application for a pellet plant will be delayed. While it had been thought a final decision would be made Tuesday, Oct. 8, regarding the zoning change on Aylmer Road that would be needed to al-
low the proposed Pinnacle pellet plant to set up shop in Chase, council has decided to wait. Council has instead set in motion plans for a second public hearing, one which would be an extention of the first. This means that all comments and questions stated at the pre-

vious meeting would still be considered by council and would not need to be repeated. Instead, the meeting would allow for additional concerns, comments or questions to come forward from those who have not yet spoken or those who have new views. Council is also going to seek further
information from the Thompson-Nicola Regional District regarding the matter. While the date for the meeting has not yet been decided, it will take place towards the beginning of November. All information, concerns and questions are asked to be submitted to the village office no later than Oct 30.

Smoke alarm motion doused At its Oct. 8 meeting, Chase council decided not to act on a request from the Fire Chief’s Association to reconsider the motion on smoke alarms. This, said Coun. Rick Berrigan, was pertaining to a push to have a box on insurance forms that would be checked if a home had proper smoke alarms active within it. This added feature would not result in a
council NOTES penalty of any kind if the smoke alarms were not present; however, it is a push in the direction of regulation. Berrigan felt that this request was a form of lobbying and it was simply received for information.
Good screen
Berrigan also stated that he felt Operation Sunscreen did a great job at the bandshell and supported the group’s request for free use of the Community Hall during the winter months. The motion was passed by council.
Walking free
The Chase walking group had fees waived for use of the com-
munity hall for three days a week between 8 and 10 a.m. This became effective Oct. 8 and will continue until May.
Trail approved
Council took some time to approve the proposed route of the Scatchard Mountain ‘Rocky Road’ trail. Discussions were related to any portions of the land in which the village had any legal
interest. The Shuswap Trail Alliance now plans to move forward with the development of the trail providing that all other required support is received.

Group rallies to make christmas brighter for kids For one Chase group, an annual get-together is about more than a few laughs among neighbours, but about the smile on a child’s face. Thanks to a group at Chabelos Resort in Chase, there is sure to be some holiday cheer spreading throughout the village this year. Each year the resort invites all of their guests to attend a special social. The after-
noon includes a potluck dinner, but it’s the generosity behind the event that makes it stand out. While the event is free, a suggested donation of one new toy per guest is requested from those attending. Last year’s event brought in a whopping $1,100 worth of toys. This year it was even better, with $2,600 worth of toys collected. The toys have been
donated to the Chase Hamper Society who will be setting up their toy shop in November. The Chase Hamper Society relies on community support such as this to fill its shelves each year. The society is in need of toys for both girls and boys, from newborn to age 15, and will take anything from toy trucks and dolls to gift certificates. There is often a spe-

Thermostat cranks up a notch CONTRIBuTOR
A week ago the Chase Heat came out of a three game eastern swing with no points but endured a great c h a r a c t e r- b u i l d i n g weekend. This past weekend the results came to the forefront as the Heat thermometer was cranked up to a nice comfortable setting for fans. Friday the 4th in Sicamous versus the Eagles saw the local junior squad walk away with a welldeserved 3-1 victory. The division nemesis did not get the better of the boys. Jake Mattes stopped all but one of the 37 fired at him, while his teammates scored twice on five chances on the power play. Kurtis Johnson started things in the first, followed by big defenceman Braden Hughes in the second, both on the powerplay. Heat scoring was concluded by Kaleb Boyle who potted an empty netter. The bus ride home was enjoyable to say the least. On Sunday at Art
Holding Memorial Arena the Heat played host to the Creston Valley Thunder Cats. All 200 in attendance will tell those who stayed home that this was one of the most entertaining games in the short Heat history. Lots of firsts in this one for the home side. Boyle started things off halfway through the first on the power play followed by a short-handed marker from Zac Hoskins. Then Ryan Beach got his first of the season with a little more than a minute left. In the second the Cats took a 4-3 lead before Hoskins got his second of the game on the power play to tie things up. In the third Stu Beckett got his first of the season, followed by Hoskins finishing

Medicinal mushrooms as adaptogens 250-832-2131 Fungi have played an important role in maintenance of human health and wellness for thousands of years. Even Oetzi, the 5300-year-old Iceman found frozen in the Alps, carried a collection of therapeutic fungi in his pack. Recent research has drawn attention to the impact of mushrooms on immune function. Medicinal Mushrooms belong to a class of potent , densely nutritious botanicals called Adaptogens - substances that help the body normalize out-of-balance systems and adapt to environmental, physical and emotional stress. Medicinal Mushrooms produce potent chemical defenses against many of the same pathogens that attack humans. Reishi mushroom is known for its natural anti-inflammatories and antihistamines
and therefore can ease symptoms of arthritis and allergies. Cordyceps is considered a tonic food, increasing energy and vitality. It is a powerful immunomodulator, supporting the adrenal gland. Chaga is the most nutritionally dense of all tree growths. It concentrates all nutrients for its protection to survive in harsh climates. Research has shown Chaga to be extremely effective in protecting cellular DNA. Its most powerful ingredient is Superoxide dismutase (SOD), an enzyme which halts oxidation of free radicals and blocks the damage of tissues. When taken in combination, Medicinal mushrooms appear to have a synergistic effect in enhancing immunity.

Choose lighter fare this Thanksgiving Statistics indicate the average Thanksgiving dinner exceeds 3,000 calories. That is more calories than a person should eat in an entire day, much less a single meal. Many people admit to indulging on bigger portions and more fattening foods come the holiday season, but choosing some lighter fare this Thanksgiving can make the meal healthier without sacrificing taste. Although there are staples of Thanksgiving dinner, many low-calorie foods can be included to make the meal healthier. The following are a few healthy substitutions or alterations holiday hosts can make when preparing their Thanksgiving feasts. * Trim down the turkey. Play up the main course with aromatic seasonings or unexpected flavors. Use garlic, olive oil and basil to add a boost of flavor to turkey without having to rely on butter or salt. Marinate the bird with lemon juice and citrus marmalade for a sweet, yet pungent flavor. Consider omitting the bread stuffing and making a stew of roasted root vegetables instead. * Opt for turkey breast. White meat of a turkey tends to have less fat and calories
than the darker cuts. Serve turkey breasts only, which will not only cut down on calories, but also on the amount of time needed to cook the meal. * Make homemade cranberry sauce. Taking the time to make your own cranberry sauce means you can control the ingredients. Cut down on the amount of sugar used in the recipe or substitute it with honey or molasses. * Reduce the number of courses. Thanksgiving dinner often features multiple courses. Extra courses can be expensive, but such massive spreads also lead many people to overeat. Stick to two or three courses, and chances are guests will not miss the extra food. * Choose whole-grain breads. Sliced whole-grain breads or rolls paired with an
olive tapenade will be flavorful and such breads are healthier than white bread and butter. * Flavor vegetables with herbs. Vegetables grilled or sauteed with fresh herbs may be so flavorful they will not need added dressings that tend to be rich or cream- or butter-based. Have a wide variety of vegetable side dishes available so guests can fill up on healthier fare rather than more calorie-dense items. * Serve only low- or no-calorie drinks. Beverages can add a substantial amount of calories to Thanksgiving meals. Give guests the option of sparkling water or even diluted cider so they’re not filling up on sugary sodas or other high-calorie beverages. * Serve fresh fruit for dessert. Create a fresh fruit salad that can be served in lieu of fatty cakes and pastries. * Include other activities. Do not make the meal the centerpiece of the celebration. Plan activities, such as a game of football in the yard or a walk around the neighborhood. This places a smaller emphasis on eating while giving guests the opportunity to burn off some of their meal.

Unpasteurized juice warning The BC Centre for Disease Control is reminding people to make sure apple juice and cider are pasteurized before consuming this annual autumn favourite. Unpasteurized apple juice and cider, commonly available at local farmers markets, can become infected with harmful bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella. The vast majority of juice sold in B.C. is safe, but only pasteurization can ensure that apple juice and cider are free of harmful pathogens. To avoid infection by foodborne bacteria, retailers and consumers should check with the producer or vendor before purchasing
apple juice or cider and determine if it has been pasteurized. If the label does not provide this information, consumers can ask their retailer or producer, or phone the manufacturer listed on the label. When in doubt, consumers should take precautions and consider the risks before consumption. Here are some other smart tips for consumers. Boil unpasteurized apple juice and cider for one minute before consuming. Avoid serving unpasteurized apple juice and cider products to those most at risk (young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune
systems). Freezing and refrigeration do not make unpasteurized apple juice or cider safe. Ensure freshness and quality by refrigerating apple juice and cider products and respecting their best-before dates. If you believe that you have become ill as a result of drinking unpasteurized apple juice or cider, see a doctor immediately and notify your local Health Authority. Symptoms of infection from E. coli or Salmonella can include stomach cramps, vomiting, fever and bloody diarrhea. Symptoms can occur within two to 10 days of consuming contaminated food.

There is no cure for those suffering from paralytic polio, and most victims unfortunate enough to find themselves with this disease end up having to endure permanent paralysis for the rest of their lives. Polio is a highly contagious disease if it is not managed properly. It’s caused by the polio virus, which can enter the environment in the fecal matter of someone already infected with the disease. In areas where there is poor sanitation, such as a meagerly maintained restaurant, the virus can easily spread through contaminated food, or water. The disease can also be picked up from direct contact with a person already infected. Victims of polio are often the weakest amongst our community,
including children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those whose immune systems are already compromised from other illnesses. Before the Salk and Sabin vaccines were introduced in the late 1950’s paralytic polio was one of the most feared diseases in North America during the 20th century. The last major Canadian epidemic occurred in 1959 and resulted in 1,887 paralytic polio cases. In 1978-79, there were 11 paralytic polio cases among individuals who had contact with imported cases in religious groups in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Rotary International, with our partners such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the United Nations, Polio has now been successfully eradicated
in all but but three countries worldwide; Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. But just because this disease is maintained at the moment, doesn’t mean that it can simply be forgotten. We need to keep fighting against polio. We need to make sure that this highly contagious disease does not reach our country ever again. Children and adults in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan are still contending with the disease. This is why we, the Rotary Clubs the world over, are continuing to donate as much as we can to this cause. Help us fight to eradicate Polio from the world, forever! It’s time to make history together. Help us change the world. Let’s end polio now. We are “This Close.”

Daybreak members, family members and Interac students dig for potatoes
This is the third year the Salmon Arm Daybreak Rotary Club has grown food for the Salmon Arm Food Banks. Daybreak Rotarians, George Eveneshen, Lloyd Nakagawa and Frank Popein offered space in their gardens plus Patrick and Ericka Allwood and Diane Ambil offered their gardens too. This kept a number of the Rotarians busy over the summer and on Saturday, October 5th Daybreak Rotarians and the Salmon Arm Interac Club members all pitched in. The final tally was: potatoes – 873 lbs., carrots – 493 lbs., beets – 290 lbs., beans – 283 lbs., rhubarb – 52 lbs., cabbage – 12 heads, kale – 9 bags, as well as some tomatoes and squash. The Second Harvest Food Bank and the Salvation Army were thrilled with the extra produce.
Ron Hooper, Dawn Bamford and George Eveneshen were keen helpers at Roktoberfest.
The second annual Roktoberfest was another huge success with the popular band called Scarecrow who kept everyone dancing all night long. Fun was had by all and the proceeds of this event will go towards the Blackburn Splash Park and other local Daybreak Rotary projects.

FOR SALE
Robert Babakaiff of Arro Wood Heat Services has been in business for 5 years. A 45-year resident of Salmon Arm, he believes in buying his products locally. After being laid off from Coe/Newnes, he saw there was a need for a reliable wood heat technician.
