The visiting students imparted some Japanese culture on their Canadian hosts last Friday at the Baptist Church. They’re part of the international home stay program run through the local school district and this was the 10th time students from the school have visited our city.

The mayor is firing back at councillors who have called him out for criticizing council decisions after council meetings. Mayor Walter Jakeway said that at a recent mayors’ caucus one speaker, Bill Buholzer, a lawyer with extensive knowledge of the Community Charter, told Jakeway that, even as mayor, he is free to express his opinion even if his beliefs go against what council as a whole has approved or disapproved. Jakeway said he told Buholzer that several members of council believe that once council votes, the mayor can only speak in support of that particular topic. Jakeway said the lawyer denied that. “He was very quick in saying ‘no, Continued on Pg. 3

After a few months investigating specific tagging incidents around the city, the Mounties had their prime suspect. It was a kid living on Quinsam Road. According to Campbell River RCMP, the youth is believed to be behind several spray painted tags resulting in approximately $20,000 damage to property and buildings. On Tuesday, police executed a search warrant on the suspect’s residence and recovered several items

related to the tagging incidents. They also found more: an indoor marijuana operation with 330 plants in various stages of growth. The youth could be facing multiple counts of mischief while two adult home owners are facing possible charges of production of a controlled substance and production for the purpose of trafficking. Their names were not released. Police are also asking the public to report any incidents of tagging.

The Campbell River RCMP have issued a public warning about a man who approached a woman on Alder Street and attempted to grab her. Early Monday morning, an adult female was walking on Alder Street near Rockland Road, headed home from a friend’s house, said Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard of the Campbell River RCMP. She was approached by a male who tried to talk with her, Beauregard said. She ignored the male who at that time became more aggressive in his attempts to speak with her. The male then grabbed hold of her. The victim was able to break free and flag down a passing vehicle while the suspect fled. There have been a number of reports over the last month of a lone male approaching younger females and attempting to engage them in conversation, Beauregard said. In Monday’s incident, the male suspect is described as a tall, white male in his 20s, with a slim build and wearing a dark jacket. He has short dark hair and scruffy facial hair. Campbell River RCMP are asking anyone who may have had a similar encounter to contact them at 250286-6221. If you have information regarding this or any other offence you can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by text – CRCS to CRIMES (274637).

Mayor: Claims freedom to speak Continued from Pg. 1

that’s not correct. So long as the mayor lets the public know that what he’s saying is not necessarily what council voted, and as long as the mayor will implement whatever decision the council has made, the mayor has free speech,” Jakeway said. “And the way he explained it was that ‘before you became mayor, did you have free speech?’ And of course the answer is yes. No legislation can take that away from you, you still have free speech.” Jakeway said he further reasoned that a mayor is responsible for representing the people who voted for him or her and those people are likely to share the mayor’s views. Jakeway, however, has taken heat from some councillors who have accused him of not abiding by the rules of the Community Charter. The most recent case occurred at a council meeting on Aug. 27. At that meeting Coun. Andy Adams called out Jakeway for critical comments he made in the media regarding council’s decision to use the Alternate Approval Process to get voters’ permission to borrow millions of dollars for sewer and water infrastructure improvements. “The other part of the Community Charter, under the responsibilities of the mayor, where it says the mayor is to reflect the will of council, do you also believe that’s undemocratic?” Adams asked Jakeway at the August meeting. Jakeway replied ‘no’ and said he was expressing his opinion. Prior to that case, after budget planning in 2012 Coun. Claire Moglove said she was disappointed Jakeway urged the public to stage a tax revolt after council

approved a 13 per cent residential tax increase. Moglove maintained that under the Community Charter, it is the mayor’s duty and responsibility to speak in support of council’s majority decision. Following that incident, Ja ke way was taken to task by Coun. Mary Storry for comments Jakeway made at a Rotary luncheon about city staff and the 2012 budget deliberations. Jakeway said city staff played “a game

of divide and conquer (that) council fell for” during budget planning. Storry in response said council would “review and discuss the mayor’s role as council spokesperson and whether (the) comments accurately or appropriately reflect the will and view of council.” At Tuesday’s council meeting, Storry, who seemed dubious, was the only councillor to respond to Jakeway’s report. “Just so I’m clear, as long as you are reflecting

the will of council in saying that you are going to support whatever council has decided, apart from that, he insinuated you could say whatever you want, whenever you want?” Storry asked. Jakeway replied that as long as the public is aware his comments are not indicative of how council voted, he can say what he wants because no piece of legislation can take away free speech. “Interesting, thanks,” replied Storry.

A walk on the Oyster River trail turned into a beach cleanup for a couple of area residents Oct. 4. Kate Elhorn and Darlene Bentley planned a morning walk at the Oyster River trail with their dogs. “A few minutes into the walk, Kate informed me that she brought us each a pair of gardening gloves and a big garbage bag,” Bentley said. “I asked her why, and she told me that the day after our first storm of the year, last week, she came down to the beach – as

So, we were not only going for a walk, but we were cleaning up the beach as well! “What I saw when we both arrived at the beach was surreal. a can to pick it up, and realize that I had just stepped on a can which had been buried. We thought we would have to go home and get another bag, but we compressed each can so that more would fit into the bag. Each time we thought we were done picking up cans, we saw more cans.” Most of the cans were beer cans. A lot of them had been ripped apart by the journey in the sea. All of the cans either had seaweed or sand in them, which also made the garbage bag heavy to carry out to the trail head. When the bag was full, Elhorn, tossed the heavy bag over her shoulders to take the kilometre walk back to the car. “Thankfully, part way, a daily dog walker came by and offered his help and carried the bag to the parking lot. We left the bag at the garbage can for pick up.” The incident got Bentley thinking about where the cans came from. “And more importantly – perhaps I’m judging here – but why are people tossing these cans into the river or the ocean?”

No more Communities in Bloom Council agreed Tuesday to allow the city’s Communities in Bloom committee to withdraw from the beautification program. The committee recommended the city pull out of Communities in Bloom following the city’s two-year hiatus from the program due to budget constraints.

Judge puts Bird back in the cage

www.CampbellRivermirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

Long-time criminal sentenced following violent struggle with RCMP Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR

A year in jail this time for Robert “Bird” Nelson, probably penitentiary the next, warned judge Adrian Brooks. Nelson, a Campbell River man with a long criminal record, has been behind bars since his violent arrest on Aug. 20. He has now amassed 73 convictions after pleading guilty to six new charges on Monday in Campbell River provincial court. Most of the convictions are for property offences and violating court orders, but he was also convicted of manslaughter by a Prince George jury in 2011. Nelson spent about 34 months behind bars for causing another man’s death, when he was released in May 2012, after serving the equivalent of a five-year sentence. He showed up for the first meeting with his parole officer, but wasn’t seen again, until leading police on a precarious car chase through the snowy and icy streets of Prince George on Dec.

26, 2012. He eluded Mounties that Boxing Day and warrants were issued for his immediate arrest. Last Aug. 20, around 7 p.m., Campbell River RCMP received word that Nelson was involved in an assault-in-progress near Discovery Pier. The first undercover officer to arrive on the scene spotted the black suspect vehicle leaving the parking lot. The licence plate matched, and Nelson was also in the vehicle. The officer recognized Nelson and followed him to an apartment parking lot where the car stopped. Knowing Bird’s history, the officer slipped on his bullet-proof vest and approached the vehicle. After a woman got out of the car, the officer blocked the door Nelson attempted to exit from, identified himself and told Bird he was under arrest. According to Crown prosecutor Bruce Goddard, who read from the police report, a violent altercation ensued between the two. Nelson body-checked the offi-

cer and fled and foot, but was quickly tackled, resulting in melee where the officer was struck at least once in the head. The struggle continued with the officer threatening to Taser Nelson, but finally using a collapsible baton to strike back at his attacker. In the scuffle that followed, Nelson lost his shirt and shoe as he attempted to flee, but the officer pinned him against a fence and used chokehold to subdue a flailing Bird until two other police officers arrived. A search of the vehicle also turned up a small amount of cocaine. Goddard also documented Nelson’s Boxing Day car chase with Prince George RCMP. The Honda Civic he was driving reached speeds up to 100 kilometres an hour on the icy and snowy streets, leading police to call off the chase due to safety reasons. On July 14, 2009, Nelson assaulted Prince George tattoo artist Darren Lee Paterson, 29, over a debt. Nelson struck Paterson in the stomach with

a collapsable baton and then punched him in the head, knocking the man to the ground. Paterson was briefly knocked out and later went home, but that afternoon he called for an ambulance. He died that night in hospital from a head injury. On Monday in Campbell River provincial court, Nelson pleaded guilty to two counts of fleeing police, one count of assaulting a police officer, possession of cocaine, and two counts of violating court orders. In a joint recommendation by the Crown and the defence, Judge Brooks accepted the year in jail, minus the time Nelson has served since his arrest. Defence lawyer Doug Marion said Nelson is in a common-law relationship and has a sixmonth-old child. Nelson was working on getting a welding apprenticeship in Alberta, Marion explained, and that’s why he failed to return to see his probation officer in Prince George. “This is a backslide for him…things were look-

ing good for him until he breached,” he told the judge. Judge Brooks noted the sentence was at the

low end, but accepted the joint submission and then cautioned Nelson that his next conviction will likely lead to federal

prison time. “You have to make your own choice on how you live in the future,” the judge said.

Mayor to test homeless shelter

FRIDAY,OCTOBER OCTOBER11, 4, 2013 FRIDAY, 2013 || CAMPBELL CAMPBELL RIVER RIVER MIRROR MIRROR || 77

Kristen Douglas CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

For one night Mayor Walter Jakeway will sleep in a homeless shelter. He will be joined by Paul Mason and Camille Lagueux of Campbell River Family Services which will be co-ordinating the Extreme Weather Shelter this year. The shelter is actually a self-contained unit built from a steel shipping container. It’s divided into eight double-occupancy rooms – one of which is wheelchair accessible – with heating and electricity as well as one shared bathroom. “I myself am going to use it, Camille is going to use it, the mayor’s going to use it. But we’re going to lock his door so he can’t escape ’til the next morning,” Mason said. “I’m going to actually have my daughter sleep above me (on the top bunk) and my dog because we just want to show that this is something we can be proud of, what Campbell River can be proud of.” The unit was built in Langley, first used in Coquitlam and most recently helped house flooding victims in High River, Alta. The shelter offers a place for the homeless to go and get a good

night’s sleep in a warm, dry bed instead of sleeping in a loading dock or the entrance to the court house, said Jakeway. Mason, a program supervisor with Family Services, said the unit arrived in Campbell River on Saturday but the society needs a place to park it. The plan is to put the shelter on a city-owned vacant lot on Dogwood Street next to the fire hall but the society needs the city’s permission before the cold and rainy nights blow in. “The biggest thing is the time constraints,” Mason said. “As was apparent last weekend, when storms hit Campbell River they hit pretty fast and pretty fierce. We’re expected to be open Nov. 1 and that’s according to BC Housing.” A staff report, however, is expected to come back for consideration at the next council meeting, on

Oct. 22. In the meantime, Mason said he has been canvassing nearby businesses and organizations and so far all have been supportive, including the fire hall which would be next door to the shelter. Mason pointed out that it would not be a large group of people using the shelter each night. “We’re not talking 50 or 60 people, we’re talking a core group of homeless individuals that make up a maximum of 10 to 11 people who hang around the downtown – it’s not a big demographic, unfortunately it’s a very visible demographic,” Mason said. “The clientele that this unit will be serving are the clientele that do utilize whatever doorways, alcoves that we have in this city, that unfortunately end up being apprehended by the local law enforcement, taken up to emergency, being assessed,

taken back and put into city cells which is a huge financial drain on our resources.” The extreme weather shelter is also low-barrier, meaning even those who are impaired are welcome. Currently, only individuals not under the influence of drugs or alcohol can use the Salvation Army’s Evergreen House shelter. Van Holst said that often leaves people out in the cold. “By their own admission in 2012, over 180 people were denied entry to Evergreen shelter, most often because of their level of intoxication,” Van Holst wrote in a letter to council. “The importance of a downtown low barrier extreme weather shelter cannot be overstated.” For the past several years the Salvation Army has operated the downtown extreme weather

shelter out of its Lighthouse Centre. However, Mason said in an oversight by BC Housing, the organization was funding a portion of the shelter’s operating costs when it should have only provided the funding when Evergreen House was at capacity; Mason said in the last few years Evergreen House was typically 40 to 50 per cent full. So this year the responsibility for the extreme weather shelter was given to Family Services which enlisted the help of Radiant Life Church. Radiant life will provide staff to supervise the shelter which is expected to be open Nov. 1 to March 31, 2014 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. The church will also serve a hot breakfast in the mornings at 6:30 a.m. The shelter will be gated and locked up during the day, and opened again each night at 7 p.m.

Our View

No longer ignorant about teen bulllying Is the world a safer place for kids since Port Coquitlam teen Amanda Todd killed herself on Oct. 10, 2012 after posting that heart-wrenching video seen around the world? No, but we have learned a few things We say: Will all since. We’ve learned, for example, that the internet can be a rough, cruel world this talk prevent kids unless they are taught how to another Amanda for protect themselves and their privacy — and we know that the internet is a Todd situation powerful tool for ruining someone’s reputation. We’ve seen that vulnerable girls and boys are easily exploited online by voyeurs who lure them with false names and post their pictures and videos,

sometimes with devastating consequences. We learned, as well, that rape culture is so deeply ingrained in our society that Canadian university students didn’t see anything wrong with frosh week chants about sex with underage girls until authorities found out and put a stop to it. We’ve learned that it’s easy to troll the internet for photos and then post them, without consent, as a Facebook dating chat room did with a picture of Rehtaeh Parsons (the Nova Scotia teen who committed suicide after photos of an alleged gang-rape were posted). Simply put, laws are inadequate for dealing with meanness and stupidity on the web. Even Port Coquitlam couldn’t find a way to legislate against bullying.

But there has been some action, too. B.C.’s ERASE Bullying website, available during the school year, provides resources for families with bullying concerns, and administrators and school counsellors are being trained to identify and support at-risk youth. The Kids Help Phone got more publicity about its services for kids and the BC Coroner’s Service studied youth suicide this fall and recommended more collaboration and resources. Will all this talk prevent another Amanda Todd situation from occurring? Maybe not, but we can no longer have ignorance as an excuse. – Black Press

Thank a farmer this weekend As British Columbians peel the potatoes and prepare the side dishes to go with their Thanksgiving turkey this weekend, Agriculture Minister Pat Pimm is taking a moment to highlight the benefits of buying local and celebrating the contribution of B.C’s agriculture sector. More than 61,000 people work in the B.C. agrifoods industry and together the farmers, ranchers and food processors produce more than 200 commodities on the land and harvest about 100 species of fish, shellfish and plants from the sea. Many of these local products will be served on Thanksgiving dinner tables this weekend. In 2012, total farm cash receipts from B.C.’s agriculture sector increased eight per cent to $2.8 billion. The crop and livestock/poultry sectors generated almost equal shares of the provincial farm cash receipts. B.C. raised more than 2.7 million turkeys and the total turkey production rose five per cent from the previous year to 21,400 tonnes. The just released British Columbia Agrifood Industry Year in Review notes the province produced almost 72,000 tonnes of potatoes in 2012 - that’s enough for 480 million servings. Mushrooms and potatoes were B.C.’s highest-value, non-greenhouse vegetable crops, followed by corn, lettuce, Continued on Pg. 9

Sensible B.C. marijuana referendum misguided

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

I won’t be signing the “Sensible B.C.” petition to demand a provincewide referendum on marijuana enforcement. You shouldn’t either, and here are a few reasons why. Let me start by saying I’ve been calling for legalization and regulation of pot for 20 years, to conserve police resources and reduce violent crime. Our war on drugs is a failure even for heroin and cocaine, and marijuana is obviously much easier to produce. But the current effort led by Dana Larsen, B.C.’s clown prince of pot, is not only misguided, it’s dangerous. The petition does not propose legalization. It seeks to impose a provincial law that would stop B.C. police from using any resources for simple possession charges. This would create a loop-

hole in the federal drug law. So what would that do? It would protect otherwise innocent customers of the current illegal marijuana trade, while leaving the criminal distribution business in place. For a closer look at that, I recommend reports from the Surrey Six murder trial now underway, or the upcoming case against three accused assassins of Red Scorpion gangster Jonathan Bacon in Kelowna. Larsen’s loony law would tie police hands when they are trying to hold someone on a lesser charge while they search for evidence of something nastier. This is a source of many simple possession charges today. Police chiefs have a different idea, asking for the option of treating simple

possession as a ticket offence to keep the court time to a minimum. Both of these notions have the same obvious flaws. They don’t deal with sales to minors and they divert no revenue to government, leaving most of that in the hands of criminal dealers who buy cocaine, guns and fancy cars. Colorado and Washington have gone the legalization route, so far without interference from their federal government. These states need money, and they don’t need more crime or ill-considered hippy gesture politics. Meanwhile in Ottawa, Health Canada is trying to convert a poorly regulated mess of small-scale medical marijuana licences to a free-market system of commercial producers. Local politicians tore a strip off Health

Canada officials at their recent convention, after years of warnings that federal licences were scattered at unknown locations, often used as fronts for larger grow-ops. Mission Coun. Dave Hensman predicted that when a grower gets a letter cancelling his licence, he’s more likely to roll up a big joint with it than to shut down. Burnaby Coun. Nick Volkow suggested the response would echo an old Cheech and Chong routine: “Dave’s not here, man.” Here’s another reason not to support Larsen: the conduct of his organizers. One fellow set up a petition table at, of all places, the Terry Fox Hometown Run in Port Coquitlam. After scrawling “pot cures cancer” on the table, he proceeded

mote local foods through the Buy Local Program. The program offers successful applicants matching funds up to $100,000 to launch or expand local food marketing campaigns. The overall agriculture, seafood and food processing sectors’ revenue grew to $11.7 billion in 2012.

Building the local market for B.C. foods is a key commitment of government’s Agrifoods Strategy, a component of the BC Jobs Plan, to lead the agrifoods sector growth into a $14-billion-a-year industry by 2017. “I encourage all British Columbians to try a local food product this weekend and support

the hard work of our province’s agriculture sector,” said Minister of Agriculture Pat Pimm. “Thanksgiving is a great opportunity for our farmers and producers to showcase their products and for B.C. families to enjoy the benefit of healthy and great tasting local food while supporting the provincial

Ian Betts says geology pairs his interest in sciences with his love of the environment and the outdoors. Betts plans to attend UVic after finishing his second year at North Island College this year.

niC student bets on geology Future geologist Ian Betts develops rock solid career choice with dual admission When Ian Betts graduated from high school, he was a lot like other students: bright, eager to learn, and not entirely sure what he wanted to study at university. A year later, Ian knows he wants to go to UVic and study geology — a decision not possible without North Island College’s UVic Dual Admission program. Through geology, he can specialize in mineral exploration, environmental consulting, hydrology, or oil and gas, when he’s ready. “I enjoy being active and outdoors,” Ian said. “Geology is a nice combination of field and office work.” In high school, Ian knew he’d like to work in the sciences but didn’t know where to start. “I found out I’m really interested in the integrated sciences,” he said. “I want something that incorporates all the core sciences and uses that knowledge to solve an issue or attack a problem.” Before entering NIC, he was faced with a choice of leaving home or attending university. He spoke to friends who graduated before him. They confirmed what he read about NIC’s small class sizes and access

Through Dual Admission, Ian is earning first and second-year credit at UVic, without paying higher tuition and rent. “Dual Admission is a great way to save money and try courses while I focus on my studies and confirm what I really want to do,” he adds. After two years, he’ll enter his third year of a Bachelor of Science degree at UVic, where he’ll get the credentials to register as a professional geologist. “I chose UVic because it had the dual admission agreement with NIC,” Ian said. “Easy access to both institutions is a huge benefit. Teacher ‘seas’ opportunities with innovative program Kristen Douglas

Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Sylvain Chabot has put an incredible amount of his time and energy into creating a brand-new, innovative program for his students. The program revolves around boating, but the spin-offs are numerous. It’s also an opportunity for local high school students to get out of the classroom and learn from hands-on instruction and pick up some valuable life skills along the way. The Nautical Sciences program will be taught by Carihi teacher Chabot and will be offered to Grades 10, 11 and 12 students across the district. “The program involves a lot of sciences,” Chabot says. “Students will learn how to fix (sail boats) and the goal is to use them to sail and then sell after that or to sell the parts to raise funds for the program to keep it going.” The Nautical Sciences program will run for one full semester, starting February 3, 2014 and run for five hours each day, five days a week for five months. The program is a part-

nership between Carihi and Robron Centre which will house the work yard and classrooms in the school’s former wood work and metal work building which hasn’t been used by the school district since Robron Middle School was closed roughly 10 years ago.

Students will take four courses as part of the program – nautical sciences, nautical technologies, physical education sailing, and drafting. In addition, students will take at least one academic course through distance learning which can be done online at

Robron Centre or from home. But during class time, students will be working in the ship yard to learn safety skills while in the yard and on the water. They will also work towards getting their boats ready for sailing. By March the students

are expected to have their boats sea worthy. “They have to fix all the sailing dinghies and the sail boats,” Chabot says. “It’s motivation. If they don’t have a boat – they don’t sail.” March, April and May will be spent sailing on dinghies building up to June when the class will take out their sail boats. The boats will be docked at the Quadra Island Harbour Authority, which is partnering with the school district. The Heriot Bay Inn is also a partner and will provide a place for lunch and showers for the students on sailing days. The Campbell River ReStore has also gotten on board and is donating tools in exchange for the students putting in volunteer hours at the store. While the program is anchored around boating there are several different aspects and opportunities for all sorts of learners. While one group of students will work on the mechanics, a technical group will fill positions such as secretary, accountant, plumber, propulsion technician, painter, seamstress,

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

It’s bright, it’s organized, it’s full of pictures and it’s not eight years old. Welcome to the City of Campbell River’s new website. The new page replaces the old one, in use since 2005. The re-vamped website, with larger fonts and tons of clickable links to help users navigate between city departments, launched Wednesday morning. Warren Kalyn, the city’s information services manager, offered a preview of the website to council Tuesday evening. “The first thing you’ll notice about our website is it’s very visual,” Kalyn said. “There are large scrolling banner images with clickable links. There’s large buttons and more accessibility options.” At the top of the website is a one-stop shop – the I Want To drop down menu – which provides

links for residents to pay their bills; view council agendas, job postings, a community calendar and council webcasts; as well as contact links and applications for job postings, home owner grants, permits and more. The website contains more than 420 pages and can be translated into more than 70 foreign languages. The homepage also comes with a full mobile site compatible with most mobile phones. ‘Terrible Tommy’ finally gets his racing dues Campbell River’s “Terrible Tommy” Hamilton has been appointed to the Greater Vancouver Motorsport hall of fame. The Greater Vancouver Motorsports Pioneers Society (GVMPS) inducted Hamilton on Sept. 28 at a ceremony in the Lower Mainland. He was inducted as a Pioneer – Sports Car Road Racing. The GVMPS is a group of motorsport enthusiasts from various motorsport activities whose goal is to recognize and record the contributions of those who were pioneers of motorsport in Lower Mainland region. Pioneers are generally considered to have contributed, or have begun their contribution, at least 40 years prior to induction and have had a strong connection to Vancouver and its surrounding communities. Inductees fall into one of many motorsport disciplines: Hot Rod,

Custom Car and Drag Racing, Sports Car and Road Racing, Oval Racing, Motorcycling, Power Boat Racing, Supporter, and Others. Inductees are selected in either of two categories: Supporters and Pioneers. Pioneers are defined as ndividuals who personally contributed greatly to the sport as competitors, drivers, team owners or in other direct roles. Hamilton began racing in the early 1960s in a Sprite and an MG Midget, but achieved fame racing a Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R sponsored by Brown Brothers Ford in Vancouver. It was 1967 when he started driving the Shelby and for the next two seasons, he and his sponsors were an unbeatable combo, winning or capturing over 40 podiums in the process. Not content with win-

ning the Sedan or B-Production contests, they changed carburetors, wheels and tires, etc., to compete in various other categories. He won five Northwest Driving Championships in 1968, two International Conference titles; two B.C. Regional Championships; and the overall Royal City Club title. That year was the high point of his road racing career.

In 1969, he won the Mount Douglas Hill Climb in victoria. In 1970, he left sports car racing and turned to oval track racing at his home track, the Oyster River Speedway (now Saratoga Speedway). He commenced with a B class car then moved to the A class (Super Sock) in 1972. He competed at Oyster River, Western Speedway in Victoria and Langley

Speedway near Vancouver. His winning ways prevailed as he earned four point championships while being victorious in numerous heats and features. As well as his wins, the media dubbed him “Terrible Tommy” after some aggressive racing moments which earned him eight black flags. He retired from active racing in 1976.

Tommy Hamilton proudly holds a plaque he was presented with last month after his induction in the Greater Vancouver Motorsports Pioneers Society.

Bantam Tyees slated for Tier 2 and weekend tourney There’s good news and not-sogood news for the bantam A Tyees following tiering play on Vancouver Island. Starting with the latter, forward Damian Rennie was lost for a few weeks after sustaining a broken finger in a Sept. 29 game. As well, the team went 0-3 in games against Tier 1 opponents. The good news for the Booster Juice-sponsored hockey team is its 3-1 record against Tier 2 clubs. “Those are the teams we’ll be facing in the playoffs,” said head coach Scott Kratzmann. “We lost our three games against Tier 1 opponents, but each of those games has helped to identify areas of focus for our prac-

tice plans.” On Sept. 28, at the Rod Brind’Amour Arena, the Tyees hosted Nanaimo’s Tier 2 squad and skated to a convincing 6-1 victory. First-year goalie Carson Bjorgsford earned the win in net. Campbell River took an early lead on the power play when Liam Rivett’s slapshot from the point was deflected past the Nanaimo goalie by Will McLean. The 1-0 lead held to the ice break and Campbell River’s offence got into gear. Nifty passes from Lukas Lund to Brady Kratzmann put the puck on Owen Boyd’s stick and he made no mistake as he buried it for a 2-0 lead. In the third period, Tyler Dickson

was granted a penalty shot and gave the Tyees a 3-0 advantage when he wired the puck top shelf. Defender Olivia Knowles made it 4-0 with assists going to Kratzmann and Boyd, before Nanaimo got on the scoreboard with a power play marker. But that was it for the visitors. Dickson fired his second goal of the game and then Rivett went endto-end to round out the scoring for the Tyees which outshot Nanaimo 49-18. It was a different story at home on Sept. 29, when the Tyees got thumped by Victoria’s Racquet Club. The visitors out-shot and out-scored the locals by a wide margin.

Campbell River’s lone goal came from McLean with assists to Rennie and Dickson. Last Sunday, the Tyees headed south for the final tiering game against Saanich Braves. This one started with a bit of a speed-rush from the Braves that the Tyees withstood admirably. Jacob Hartley appeared to score for Campbell River on a lob shot from the point that crossed the goal line, but the referees said the net was off and disallowed the goal. Saanich came right back and put one behind goalie Bellefleur on the short-side to take a 1-0 lead. Penalties cost the Tyees as the Braves tallied twice with the man

advantage and then added another to go up 4-0. Another power play goal made it 5-0, before Campbell River finally scored. In the third period, Jaxon Ward got the puck to Matthew Leard who put it back to Parker at the point. His shot found the back of the net and the Tyees were on the scoreboard. They scored another when Lund fed Dickson whose one-timer rippled the twine. The final was 5-2 Braves. The Campbell River Booster Juice Bantam A Tyees head to Port Moody for a tournament this Thanksgiving weekend. The team extends a huge thanks to those who donated to the team’s bottle drive last weekend.

Campbell River Family Services Society often use creative means when working with children, especially in those cases where there may have been trauma or abuse.

As explained by the British Columbia Art Therapy Association, “Thought and feeling often reach expression in images rather than words…through the use

of art therapy, feelings and inner conflicts can be projected into visual form.” This amazing collection of art showcasing the creations of children

as young as six years of age has been made possible through a grant from the Campbell River Community Foundation and in partnership with the Tidemark Theatre TELUS STORE OR AUTHORIZED DEALER

and the Campbell River Arts Council. “The creativity, originality and feelings expressed by the artists through their work is a reflection of their individuality and resilience,” said Camille Lagueux, executive director of Family Services. “We hope that everyone in Campbell River will join us in celebrating these young artists by stopping in to view the exhibit.” Marion Bryan, a clinical counsellor, uses art therapy regularly in her work with youth has witnessed the powerful effect that art therapy has in helping them access their feelings. “Creating art therapeutically is more about the process of play, than about a finished product – although the finished product is quite profound,” she says. “Creating in this way is often instinctive and taps into thoughts, feelings, memories and ideas that go beyond verbal language. We hope that you enjoy the show and feel honoured at being invited to glimpse a small piece of each child and youth’s inner world.” Our Journey: Expressions Through Art will be open for public viewing from Oct. 15-19, in the lobby from noon to 4 p.m.

City approves borrowing $15 million Council approved borrowing $15 over 15 years at Tuesday’s council meeting to improve the city’s aging water and sewer infrastructure. The bylaws allow council to borrow $10.2 million for water projects and $4.8 million for sewer works. The projects on the horizon include replacing the city’s existing drinking water system which will be decommissioned by BC Hydro once the John Hart Generating Station project gets underway; as well as water main improvements, a water booster pump station, a chlorine facility upgrade, and a Beaver Lodge reservoir expansion. The city obtained approval to take on the debt as less than 10 per cent of Campbell River voters signed elector response forms opposing the borrowing.

Drive Smart BC Deer Whistles - Keep Your Money in Your Pocket You may have seen them, a pair of small whistles that you attach to your vehicle to scare deer away and prevent collisions with them. The intent is for the movement of your vehicle to force air through them and produce sound, or ultrasound that keeps deer off the highway and safely out of your path. The answer hasn’t changed from the first time I wrote about this in the 1990’s, keep your money in your pocket, they don’t work.

Chevy Chevy Drive Safe Safe Drive 2x14 2x14

The average deer has the same hearing range that humans do. This means that like you, the deer cannot hear ultrasonic whistles. It doesn’t take much thought to decide just how effective these will be. Audible whistles emit sound around 3 and 12 kHz depending on whether they are open or closed ended. Tests conducted at the roadside found that the noise from the whistles was not significantly louder than the road noise created by the vehicle. If other noise is present in the environment the whistles can be even less noticeable. Oddly enough, in a study that observed the reaction of deer to vehicle with and without deer whistles actually found that more deer paid attention to vehicles without the whistles than those equipped with them. The conclusion appears to be that drivers would be better to save their money, slow down and drive carefully where deer are known to be a hazard.

This means the plaintiff must take reasonable steps to minimize the losses he or she suffers by following the doctor’s advice regarding treatment and getting back to work as quickly as possible. With a Mike’s Hard Lemonade in hand, Ryan Mennie raised a toast, ushering in a new era at the Tidemark Theatre. “We can now enjoy a drink!” said the radio host by day and city councillor by night. “Let’s hear it for Bif Naked!” The Vancouver rocker was at the Tidemark Saturday night and it marked the first time patrons were legally able to enjoy a glass of wine or beer while inside the theatre during a performance. “It went really well. We had no issues,” said a very pleased Kim Ems-

ley-Leik, the Tidemark manager. Up until now, theatre goers were only able to sip alcoholic bevies in the lobby, and only before the performance or at intermission. Earlier this year, city council gave approval for Tidemark patrons to drink outside the theatre, in a designated area. However, the theatre’s application was turned down by the Liquor Control Licensing Board because there’s no enclosed patio. Now, patrons can be treated like adults and take their drinks to their seats rather than guzzling back or leaving half a drink behind because

the lobby lights are flashing, indicating the show is about to start. The Bif Naked concert was the litmus test to see how patrons would react and behave with their libations, and the largely 30- to 40-something crowd came through with flying colours. “We were pleasantly surprised. Most people did the recycling for us,” said Emsley-Leik. The other key moment came later in the show when a woman, holding a beer, went to dance at the stage front. A rather large security guard quickly approached her and, very diplomatically, politely asked her to set it down and out of the

way so there would be no spillage on the expensive amplifiers. She happily complied and the rest of the evening was smooth sailing. “We spoke with all the volunteers and security before the show. We specifically didn’t want a heavy-handed approach because that does not go over well,” noted EmsleyLeik. The real benefit of the new policy is it should mean better revenues for the Tidemark Theatre Society. The theatre doesn’t make much on ticket sales and most of the revenue comes from rentals and alcohol sales. The new policy will be in effect on a showby-show basis. In other words, there will be no drinking in your seat when the little ballerinas from the local dance school are doing their sugar plum ferry routines. If there was one little glitch with the new alcohol policy at the Bif Naked performance, it was a few folks who aren’t quite up with theatre etiquette. That means you wait until the end of a song to get up to buy a drink or use the loo – not in the middle of a tune. “It just takes a little education, that’s all,” said Emsley-Leik.

It is with great sadness that we announce that Marie succumbed to her lengthy battle with cancer. Marie passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. Predeceased by her daughter Stella, Marie is survived by her long term partner Chuck Ryan, son Mel, daughters Becky, Linda and Freda (Bill), adored grandsons Levi and Zach, sister Clara, nieces and nephews and many friends. Marie was born in Rock Bay, grew up in Shoal Bay, and lived her whole life on the BC coast. Marie loved life-she loved to laugh and create fun and good times for others. She was a big hearted, larger than life character. A no-nonsense plain talking woman, Marie was down to earth; accepting and loving to all. She welcomed everyone into her home and was "Mom", "Grandma", "Aunty" to many who were not necessarily biologically related. Marie's special gift and great passion was cooking and feeding people. The more the merrier. She cooked professionally in restaurants and logging camps and never tired of providing delicious meals for large groups of people at anytime. For holidays, she made sure that there was always a place at the table for anyone with nowhere else to go. Marie was a loving partner, devoted and loyal friend, and an exceptional mother and grandmother. She was greatly loved and will be missed more than words can say. A celebration of Marie's life will be held at a tea on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Yuculta Lodge in Campbell River from 1-4pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Marie's name to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Diabetes Assciation. We would like to give special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of Campbell River Hospital who provided such kind and loving care.

Firefighters wear pink for breast cancer awareness in October This month, members of Campbell River’s Fire Rescue crews have swapped their navy blue uniforms for something a little more colourful. Throughout October, members of the Fire Department are wearing pink T-shirts while on duty to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the fight for a cure. Firefighters exposed to carcinogens and other chemicals while on the job are disproportionately diagnosed with breast cancer – just one of many cancers linked to the work firefighters do. “Our members are highly motivated to support the Canadian Breast

C ancer Foundat ion to raise awareness for breast cancer research and to join the fight for a cure,” says Stu Dumont, firefighter and president of IAFF Local 1668, the Campbell River Local of the International Association of Fire Fighters. “Few sights grab the public’s eye like a fire fighter dressed in bright pink, so all across the United States and Canada, IAFF members are suiting up in pink to raise awareness and fight breast cancer—just one of the many ways fire fighters show support for the fight against breast cancer,” adds Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Doherty. “Breast cancer is a complex disease. With

one in eight women diagnosed each year in North America, an estimated 232,340 new cases of breast cancer and 39,620 deaths will be reported in 2013. Among all women affected, 85 percent have no family history,” Doherty says. “Your Campbell River fire fighters encourage

everyone in the community to participate in breast cancer awareness and prevention activities,” Dumont adds. For more information, please contact Campbell River Fire Rescue at 250-286-6266 or visit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation website: http://www.cbcf.org/bc

Artists lend their skills to Art of the Paddle

L

ed by worldrenowned carver Bill Henderson, a galaxy of artists, both aboriginal and nonaboriginal, are lending their skills to this year’s Art of the Paddle. Scheduled for Oct. 26, the event will take place in Campbell River’s Maritime Heritage Centre and will feature both a silent auction and a regular auction. This is the third Art of the Paddle evening with the event being a major fundraiser for the Campbell River Hospice Society as well as the

BraveHearts Dragon Boat team which cohosts and organizes the entire gala occasion. Paddles which have been made from solid blocks of wood by local aboriginal carvers are then passed on to local artists who decorate them before the paddles are auctioned off. Led by their patriarch, several other members of the Henderson family will be displaying their artistic skills, together with other artists from the Campbell River

area. The finished products are one-of-a-kind works of art. Prior to the event, the paddles will be on display at the business premises of their local sponsors and for the 10 days prior to Oct. 26, all of them will be on show in the Royal Bank of Canada building on Shopper’s Row, Campbell River. Those attending this year’s event will be privileged to witness the amazing skills of local artisans as well as supporting the effort to bring a Hospice facility to Campbell River to serve the future needs of residents of this community and the surrounding area. Tickets are now on sale at $20 each and can

Major traffic pattern change coming to Campbell River Hospital entrance Site work to prepare for the new $266 million, 95-bed Campbell River Hospital will lead to a permanent reversal of traffic flow at the Campbell River Hospital main entrance on 2nd Avenue October 17th, weather permitting. Starting on the morning of Thursday October 17th, traffic flow through the main entrance parking lots will switch from a clockwise direction to a counter-clockwise direction. This means motorists will enter through the west parking lot and exit through the east parking lot, the opposite of the current practice. Please see attached image. Traffic control people will be on hand to assist with this change. Both east and west parking lots will be closed to regular parking on Wednesday, October 16th during the day to prepare for this change. The east parking lot will remain open for handicapped parking only, and drop-off traffic. Traffic control people will be on hand to assist motorists. Please remember that two new hospital parking lots are now open, offering 140 new parking stalls, off 2nd Avenue just west of Yucalta Lodge, near the Dogwood Street intersection. The traffic flow change is necessary to accommodate a new Ambulance Access Route running around the Sunshine Wellness Centre to the Emergency Department entrance. The new temporary Ambulance Access Route is required because construction of the new hospital next year will block the present ambulance route to and from the present Emergency entrance. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
