Nobel congratulations misplaced Erin Haluschak Record Staff
The early-morning phone call usually precedes either really good news or really bad news. For Comox Valley resident Ann MacDonald, it was really good news — but not for her. Rather, the congratulatory phone call was for Canadian author and newly minted Nobel Prize for Literature winner Alice Munro. MacDonald rents Munro’s Comox Valley condo, and the 5 a.m. phone call Thursday was Munro’s publisher, wanting to pass along congratulations to
the author. “I ignored the phone the first time it rang … but my curiosity got the better of me the second time and I stomped down the hall expecting to hear that I had won a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Disneyworld,” said MacDonald, who is also a writer. “The voice on the end asked for Alice, and then proceeded to tell me he wanted to congratulate her. I knew immediately it meant she had won the Nobel Prize for literature.” MacDonald has been renting the condo from the Ontario-based short story author since August, and
explained Munro and her husband escaped the snow and cold temperatures by spending winters in the Comox condo. Since her husband passed away earlier this year, Munro was not planning on using the condo this winter, and rented it to MacDonald. The 82-year-old Munro, who has family living on the West Coast, is the first Canadian to win the prestigious award. Saul Bellow, who was born in Quebec, won in 1976 as an American citizen. MacDonald, who has a novel which is ready to be published, admitted she restrained herself from
telling Munro’s publisher about her book. “I did not tell him about my novel, oh-so-ready to be published. I did not offer, or beg even, for him to read it. No, instead I pulled out my reading glasses, found my cellphone, then hunted down my magnifying glass to read out to him Munro’s daughter’s phone number in Victoria. “All of this at 5 a.m., when I could have simply said Alice doesn’t live here anymore,” she added. Munro joins an illustrious list of Nobel laureates in literature, including Rudyard Kipling, T.S. Eliot and Ernest Hemingway. photos@comoxvalleyrecord.com
Sallyann acquires kitchen on wheels

The Comox Valley Salvation Army hopes to soon feed the community’s homeless an evening meal via a community kitchen on wheels. Community ministries director Brent Hobden says there are hot food options for the homeless during the day, pointing out the hot lunch program operated by the Sonshine Lunch Club. “But there’s not much in the city as far as that evening meal goes, so that’s why the focus is on going into the evenings, and getting out into the community where the people are congregating,” says Hobden, noting the program is still in the planning stages, but the mobile kitchen will likely visit certain locations that are easy for users to reach. ... see VAN ■ 2 “The idea is bringing the

food to the people but there still would have to be some kind of a gathering point.” The vehicle was previously used in Bermuda among other places in North America, and it needed a bit of work to get it up to code, according to Hobden. For example, he says the brakes were replaced in Bermuda and less-stringent Bermuda regulations meant they needed to be ripped out and replaced. But, he expects it will be ready for the public to see it by Wednesday’s community forum on affordable housing and homelessness at the Filberg Centre in Courtenay. The unit is scheduled to be there between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The mobile kitchen features a commercial fridge, microwave oven,

Disaster response is its primary purpose, Hobden explains, noting the mobile kitchen could have fed search and rescue crews during this month’s search for two men missing in Strathcona Park if it had been ready for use
at that time. It also features a 7,000-watt generator so it can operate in any location. Funding for the food to feed the homeless will come from community donations, such as money from the Christmas Kettle campaign and proceeds from the three Salvation Army thrift stores in the Val-

ley. It will be staffed with volunteers and Hobden notes some people have already stepped forward to help out. Once up and running, Hobden expects the mobile kitchen will serve an evening meal one or two nights a week. “The long-range goal is to send it out every evening, but that’s not going to be feasible for quite some time,” he says. “Down the road as things progress, and we have more volunteers step forward and more funding opportunities, more resources, and a better understanding of exactly where the need is, then we’ll look at expanding the program.” For more information about volunteering or donating to the Salvation Army, visit www.cvsalarmy.ca.
My practice is about more than just tax. It’s about building your business, understanding the difficulties that you’re facing and finding real solutions. Solutions that lead to growth. I’ve been part of the management team of a growing business for the last decade, and I’ve seen the challenges that business owners run into every day. If you own a business and find yourself thinking that there has to be a better way, we should talk. And of course, I do taxes too.

Unacceptable items include glass, Styrofoam, household hazardous waste (paint, motor oil, antifreeze, batteries, electronics), plastic film and most wrapping paper.

Local growers promoted Scott Stanfield Record Staff
A delegation from the Sunshine Organics and SunCoast Grown home-delivery service appeared before the regional district committee of the whole last week to discuss a $100,000 grant from Buy B.C. The money, presented earlier in the year by local MLA Don McRae, is being used to promote local agriculture and to connect consumers with producers. “What’s really important now is
local,” said consultant Judi Tyabji, noting the top concern among consumers is genetically modified organisms (GMO). “The demand for local products is going up.” Tyabji is president of Pebble in the Pond Environmental Society in Powell River. She was accompanied by Rachel Mooney, who manages the operation in the Valley, and Melissa Call, who began the business in Powell River in 2002. It’s been running eight years in the Valley. reporter@comoxvalleyrecord.com

Rural colleges challenged Renee Andor Record Staff
B.C. NDP critic for advanced education David Eby said he’s gained a better understanding about the issues rural colleges face thanks to his tour of the province’s postsecondary institutions. Eby has already been to about threequarters of B.C.’s post-secondary schools during his month-long tour. Last week, he visited North Island College. “As a new critic, it’s a huge advantage for me to come and talk to students about the challenges they face right now, which are very different than even when I went to school, and to administrators about what they see as the challenges in the system that they’re working with,” Eby said Thursday outside NIC’s Comox Valley campus. He was on his way in to speak with NIC president John Bowman, so hadn’t yet dug into the specific issues NIC faces, but during his tour he’s noticed rural college administrators and students have many similar concerns.

“The rural schools face very similar challenges and have very similar concerns about funding,” he said. “In particular, they’re worried that the system has no way of taking into account the impact of training five people in a particular skills area in a smaller community, and they’re currently being funded in a way that they have to have a minimum of 15 or 20 people in a class.” He added the economic impact of training five electrical engineers in Courtenay, for example, would be far greater than training five electrical engineers on the Lower Mainland. “We need to get past the idea that you have to have 25 people in a class in order for that class to have a successful economic impact,”
he continued. “I think that this school, like so many other rural colleges, faces the very serious issue of being funded as if they were located in the downtown of Vancouver. Many rural colleges service multiple campuses; they have higher heating costs, they have higher supply costs. “And they also have communities they serve that need to be able to access their programs and get to these programs more urgently because they’re totally disengaged from the economy right now. So, I think the greatest opportunities are in rural areas, but also the greatest challenges are faced by rural colleges.” He added that while funding remains static, schools are being asked to offer more and more
to their communities. “So, they find themselves spending a lot of time trying to make up revenue through various sources, like international students or private contracting, these kinds of activities, and unfortunately that distracts from what should be one of their key mandates, which is educating British Columbians for the jobs that are going to be there in the future.” Eby added the “rotating door at the top of the ministry” means there’s been no coherent plan in the advanced education system. He had planned to visit Camosun College on Friday as he continued his tour to better understand the issues around post-secondary education in B.C. writer@comoxvalleyrecord.com

CVRD receives breather about filtration system Scott Stanfield Record Staff
The Vancouver Island Health Authority has approved the regional district’s application for filtration deferral for the Comox Valley water system — which buys some time to meet VIHA’s 4321 drinking water criteria.
“I feel like we’re moving in the right direction,” senior manager of engineering services Marc Rutten said at last week’s water committee meeting. The application was based on waterquality testing results and ongoing watershed protection planning for Comox Lake, which supplies Courtenay,
Comox and local water service areas in the district. The deferral provision in the VIHA policy enables the system to operate without a filtration plant, provided certain requirements can be met, such as source water criteria for turbidity and E. coli. Constructing a filtration plant would
cost about $32 million. A deep-water intake, along with an ultraviolet (UV) light-disinfection plant, would run about $25 million. While filtration deferral is “good news,” Courtenay director Jon Ambler questions if the $25 million would be wasted if the district ends up going to filtration. Along with producing top-quality water, Rutten said the intake would also mitigate risks such as fuel spills from boats. “That infrastructure will never be wasted,” he said. VIHA’s drinking
water treatment policy is aimed at ensuring consistent minimum standards for surface water supply systems on the Island. One of the main criteria is a maximum of 1-nephalometric turbidity unit (NTU) in finished water. Results from two years of testing indicate the CVRD has achieved less than one NTU, Rutten said. “But that risk is always there,” he added. The next steps are to issue a Request for Proposal to complete a feasibility/siting study for the addition of UV

Half of the vehicle is brand new; half of it is recycled,” explained Courtenay Fire Chief Don Bardonnex of their week-old rescue truck. “If you look at the cab portion it’s a 2013 chassis … and the box on the back of it is off of our 1992 Spartan Heavy Rescue.” Bardonnex said the department recycled the cab, the large command lights, generator and more off their old rescue vehicle, and retrofitted it with a new cab with state-ofthe-art equipment and high environmental

There’s safety lighting and electronic stability control,” he said. “It meets the highest EPA standards for 2013 California emission standards. A non-profit facility Thursday 17 October ~ 7pm – 10pm Florence Filberg Centre ~ Conference Hall GET TO KNOW the world beat and funky face of Zandhunga — Britt Bowman, Oscar Robles Diaz and Tony Morrison (left to right) — this Saturday at the Cumberland Hotel.
Global grooves reach Cumberland If you form a part of this town’s vibrant dance community, you likely are familiar with local group Zandhunga as the ensemble that over the past few years has been churning out classic and modern Latin tunes at some of the best dance parties on the North Island. They have toured internationally, and it was just last spring they performed at the Cumberland Hotel for the first time, turning the heat up to tropical degrees as the room was filled with rhythms and the dance floor packed full of bodies. This Saturday, Zandhunga returns to the Cumberland Hotel to debut a whole new show, and the repertoire draws from not just Latin rhythms but a mashup of rhythms from around the globe. Original compositions with varied traditional elements are presented on modern instrumentation for a uniquely neo-tribal, world-beat fusion experience. The music is heavily instrumental, but with compositions

on electric bass guitar, and Tony Morrison on saxophones and flute form the power trio that is behind this latest sound from Zandhunga. They deliver a progressive blend of hiphop, trip-hop, jazz, flamenco, funk, Afrobeat, Latin and panAfrican rhythms in a repertoire that ranges from chilled down-tempo to upbeat and fiery. Summing all that up into a genre, the versatile term world beat might be the closest fit. “I particularly love playing in this incarnation of Zandhunga,” says Bowman. “Every-
luck of organic ingredients. Sometimes, the raw mix of flavours can get pretty intense and out there, and I like that. ” Onstage interaction between the musicians is spontaneous and free with soaring solos and playful polyrhythms bound together by underlying and infectious grooves. While the time signature may shift — from 4/4 through to 7/8 for
those who happen to be counting — the beats remain surprisingly danceable. Apart from original compositions featured in two-thirds of the show, the concert at the Cumberland Hotel will also feature an entire set inspired and in tribute to the traditional music of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. Robles says this world beat face the collective is showing comes from a longterm history of musical experimentation. “This incarnation of the collective is more of a reincarnation if anything. Right from the start, we were playing around with mixing hip-hop and rock with African, Latin and Brazilian rhythms.” Some of that early fusion can be found on Zandhunga’s self-titled CD, released last year, but recorded in different studios and over a

This guy’s funny Though most familiar to over 750,000 weekly listeners as the host of The Debaters on CBC Radio, it is as an international headline standup comedian where Steve Patterson truly shines. Struck by the idea of standup as a full-time career in 1997, when he lost his job as a copywriter for making an ad about an amusement park ‘too amusing,’ By 2010, steady accolades for his work garnered him a third invitation to perform on the Just For Laughs prestigious televised gala. Considered to be the highlight of the show by critics and audience alike, Patterson’s performance prompted the legendary comedy icon and gala host, Steve Martin, to quip: “If I’d known he was going to be THAT good, I would

The opinion has been universally endorsed by the media: • “One of this country’s sharpest wits” — Montreal Gazette; • “Wickedly funny” — Halifax Chronicle Herald; • “Be it resolved that whip-smart Canadian comic Steve Patterson, host of the hilarious CBC radio show The Debaters, is one funny fellow.” — Globe and Mail; In November, Patterson begins the third leg of a national tour with his 90-minute, one-man show This Is Not Debatable! He performs Nov. 14 at the Sid Williams Theatre

B.C.’s big-hearted professional wrestling community is once again coming together to stage a fundraising card in the Comox Valley. Slams for Sebastian 2 is set to go Nov. 9 at the K’ómoks First Nation band hall. The
inaugural Slams for Sebastian, held this past February, raised almost $1,500 for Sebastian Cobban and his parents Tyler and Amanda to help with their infant son’s medical bills. Sebastian had a rare medical condition that required constant visits to hospital. The youngster, whose parents are from the Comox Valley, passed away in April, just three days shy of his 11-month birthday. Keith Spinks, another former Valley

Skating club welcomes one and all
Earle Couper Record Staff
The show must go on! That’s what the Comox Valley Skating Club is hoping, as they are planning to present – for the first time in several years – a full scale ice show this season. “If you have ever thought about getting your skates back on, or getting your children into skiing, this would be the year to do it,” the club notes. Why? “Because an ice show is the most exciting project a skating club takes on, the single largest project a skating club takes on, and the most fun skaters and parents have together in the club,” the club notes. CVSC coaches Dawn and Greg Ladret have a wealth of experience, both in coaching skaters and staging entertaining shows. The husband-and-wife duo each has well over 20 years of coaching experience. Dawn, who has staged ice shows here in the past, has taken many skaters to provincial and national championships. Greg has competed at the national level and toured for 10 years with top-calibre ice shows, including Walt Disney’s World on Ice. He has also toured (as magician Twiggly Wiggly) in the United States and Dubai. “We have a busy year coming up,” Greg said. “Our big project is to put together an ice show, as well as the regular stuff. The fact is it takes participation, it takes funding – we’ll be going to the community for sponsorships – so before the ice show project can fly we have to make sure the skating club has a reasonable amount of membership to put into the show, and sustain us through the year.” Ladret notes there is a misconception that skating clubs are about only figure skating. Nothing could be further from the truth, he says. “Figure skating is one aspect of what we do. We do have competitive figure skaters. But in any place, big centre or small centre, a really small percentage of the skating program is competition. “Nationally, I believe it’s about five per cent of all the people enrolled in skating that are competitive skaters,” he says, noting the comparison to
minor hockey where approximately one half of one per cent of players make it to the NHL. “Competing or reaching the elite level is not what the skating club is all about. It all starts at the grassroots level. Learn the basics, then follow whatever path that takes you on. “Figure skating is not our main objective. It’s to provide a learnto-skate program, whether it’s children that will even become figure skaters or ringette or hockey players or just go to a public skating session with friends and be good at it,” Ladret explained. Experienced coaches such as the Ladrets are able to identify specific talents in young skaters and help steer them into the sport that best suits them. A skating club will teach the basics which skaters can build on in hockey, power skating, speed skating or whatever their interest is. Like other groups, the Comox Valley Skating Club has been hit

in sport). And ViaSport British Columbia is helping get folks involved. There are (funding) options,” Ladret noted. Getting back to the ice show, Ladret notes the young skaters are always the stars
of the show. “People love them,” he says. And some young skaters who were stars of previous Comox Valley Skating Club ice shows have gone on to bigger things. Michelle Jarvis is enjoying success as a competitive adult skater, bringing home medals from almost every event she enters. Aaron Van Cleave is a pairs skater who holds dual U.S. and Canadian citizenship. He currently competes for Germany with partner Mari Vartmann. They are two-time (2011-2012) German national silver medallists. Annie Laurie, who has performed in skating shows (produced by a longtime skating friend of Greg) on cruise ships, finished

Annie Laurie and brother Luke were fifth in Novice Pairs while Ashley Mangles of the CVSC and partner Laura Hougham withdrew from the event. Luke placed ninth in Novice Men and in Novice Ice Dancing. Matthew Willis of Comox teamed with Jennifer Young to place fifth. Willis is now a coach with the Racquet Club of Victoria Figure Skating Club. He is a five-time provincial champion in different pairs and ice dance levels. From learning the basics to the international stage, the Comox Valley Skating Club truly offers something for every level and interest. In Loving Memory of Bill (William) Robert Ross August 19, 1949 ~ October 15, 2009
Our lives go on without you But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartache When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you Silent the tears that fall, Living our lives without you Is the hardest part of all. Those special years will not return When we were all together, but with the love within our hearts You will walk with us forever With all our love, Jo, Andi & Rob
In Memory of GORD GRAHAM who left this playing field October 22, 1999 Gord was a man dedicated to his fellow human beings: friends, students, strangers, ner-do-wells, kings and queens, Gordie saw no difference. May all his friends and colleagues take a moment to remember his influence. Be well and grow from knowing him. ~~

Katherine Agnes Watson aka Sandulak January 31, 1930 – October 8, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, Kay at Cumberland Lodge with her step-daughter, Carol by her side. She has left to be reunited with her loving husband, Ted Sandulak of 55 years who predeceased in 2007 and her parents. She is survived by step-daughter, Carol, daughter’s Lynda and Debbie, son’s Ken and Wayne, sister Lorraine, brother Louie, nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mom has always loved her flower and vegetable gardens and had a real green thumb. She was always a very loving and caring person and had her doors open. Coffee, tea and goodies were always plentiful. Mom has always been a hard worker and made many friends over the years. When mom and dad finally got the chance to retire they spent lots of time fishing and camping at Kitty Coleman Beach. The family would like to thank her doctor and all the staff at Cumberland Lodge for the kind and wonderful care that was provided. On Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm there will be an informal gathering of Kay’s family and close friends at Piercy’s Mt. Washington Funeral Home at 440 England Ave in Courtenay to share memories of a life well deserved. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Tippenhauer, Marlis Grete Helen April 1933 - September 2013
In Loving Memory of DARYL JOHN MCMILLAN Jan 24 1985 - Oct 8 2010. Gone is the face we loved so dear, Silent is the voice we loved to hear, Too far away for sight or speech, But not too far for thought to reach, Sweet to remember him who once was here, And who, though absent, is just as dear. Always and Forever, Mum, Dad, Nan and Pop.

For those who love, time is not.... Missing you today and always.
Marlis Grete Helen Tippenhauer passed away on September 29th, 2013 at her home in Black Creek, B.C. Gracing the world with her presence on April 17th, 1933 in Hildesheim, Germany, Marlis developed a passion for swimming, sewing and culinary arts. Later on in her teenage years, she apprenticed and became a Seamstress, a talent she continued to utilize throughout her entire life, making beautiful clothing for herself as well as her entire family. Marlis married the “love of her life, Henry Tippenhauer, on December 17th, 1955. In 1956, the two newlyweds ventured to British Columbia to begin a new life together. They first arrived in Pioneer Goldmine, then at Southgate Camp eventually settling in Black Creek, where they built a beautiful home. Marlis happily remained at her home for the rest of her life. The happy couple were blessed with a son, Roy, in 1960. When they weren’t working hard taking care of their home, they were camping, fishing or skiing at Forbidden Plateau, activities they continued to take part in for many years. Roy married his wife, Carla and had two children, Nicole and Amy, who Marlis was incredibly proud of. Later on in life, Marlis enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, swimming, camping, gardening, taking care of her dog and baking/cooking the most delicious food to have ever touched your taste buds. Marlis was kind, caring, generous, warm and loving and was always there for her family. The lives of those who were lucky enough to know and spend time with her will forever be changed. She is survived by her son, daughter-in-law and two granddaughters, who will miss her greatly. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Black Creek Recreation Center (Black Creek Hall) on Sunday November 3rd from 1pm to 4 pm. Refreshments will be served. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your favorite charity in Marlis’ name.

ANDREW HAGEN 1942-2013 It is with great sadness that the family of Andrew Hagen announces his passing on September 26, 2013 in Comox, BC, at the age of 70. (Alfred) Andrew Hagen was born in Hardisty, Alberta on December 9, 1942, son of Agnes (Heenan) and Alfred Goskall Hagen. He received his early schooling in Courtenay, BC, graduated from Burnaby South High school and set out to experience many once-in-alifetime opportunities. As a result, his employment experiences were diverse. He worked as a jet engine mechanic in the RCAF, RCMP officer, race car driver and mechanic, logger, musician, record producer, business owner, newspaper publisher, radio personality and telecom/IT/security professional. Andrew was a technical genius and could fix just about anything. In 2008, he returned “home” to the Comox-Courtenay area to reunite with his high school sweetheart, Gale, and to embark upon his dream of restoring a sailboat and spending time on the water. During his last days, Andrew often said that he accomplished everything he ever wanted in his life and that his time in Comox held the happiest moments. Andrew is survived by his loving wife, Gale; daughter, Andrea, of Victoria, BC; his sister Mary Mackay (Gary) of Ryley, AB; his nephews, and extended family members. He was predeceased by his son, Clint. Andrew was also a mentor and played an influential part in the lives of many. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. At Andrew’s request, there will not be a funeral or service. Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Andrew to a charity of their own choice.

COMOX VALLEY RECORD • Tuesday, October 15, 2013
Odlum Brown celebrates dual anniversary More than 100 people packed into Shelter Point Distillery last month to celebrate a special dual anniversary for one of the Comox Valley’s most trusted investment firms. September marked 15 years in the Valley and Campbell River for Odlum Brown, an independent, full-service investment firm represented in Courtenay by branch manager and associate portfolio manager Janine Martin. At the same time, Odlum Brown itself was celebrating its 90th anniversary in B.C. “This has been a really special year for us,” Martin said. “We have a lot of clients here in the Valley who have been with us from the beginning, many of whom have recommended us to their friends and family. Our success is based entirely on theirs, and we just wanted to show our appreciation of
ODLUM BROWN CELEBRATED 90 years at the Shelter Point Distillery. that special relationship.” Anniversaries notwithstanding, it’s been a busy year at Courtenay’s Odlum Brown office. Martin added a new adviser to her team, longtime local businessman Kevin Pantuso, and the entire Odlum Brown family introduced a new modern look to usher in the next 90 years. “Our new tagline is Investing for Generations,” Martin said.
“That’s really what it’s all about, isn’t it? It’s being disciplined and making smart investment decisions for long-term growth.” Over the course of 90 years, Odlum Brown’s straightforward stance on investing has effectively guided clients to wealth creation and capital preservation. Its hypothetical OB Model Portfolio has outperformed the S&P/ TSX Index since its inception in 1994, and
so far 2013 has seen a continuation of that trend. Nationally, Odlum Brown is distinguished as one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies, and the firm is recognized as an employer of choice in B.C. “We’re continually looking toward the future, so it’s nice to take a step back and celebrate the past with our friends, clients and neighbours,” Pan-
The Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa has been recognized as an industry leader by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada. The Business of the Year Award recognizes overall strength and long-term viability of strategies, commitment to visitor satisfaction, growth and innovation, contribution to tourism, and commitment
to human resource development. The Kingfisher is renowned for its stunning location and the Pacific Mist Hydropath. Over the past year, it has realized an annual revenue growth of $3 million, an annual increased occupancy from 50 to 85 per cent, and an annual decrease in resort wide expenses by almost $5 million. “Teamwork may not
seem like a new and exciting innovation for success in a hospitality business today, but based on the past year’s performance at the Kingfisher, it is impossible to ignore that teamwork is the innovation behind our phenomenal success,” says Natasha Richardson, general manager.
“When people come together and set aside their individual needs for the good of the whole, they can accomplish what might have looked impossible on paper.” The award winner will be named Dec. 3 at the Canadian Tourism Association Gala in Ottawa.
tuso said. “The client appreciation event was a real success – the sun was shining and everyone was having a good time knowing that their money was well taken care of.” To learn more about Odlum Brown and request a complimentary subscription to the Odlum Brown Report, call 250-703-0637.

School districts stuck with fallout from Victoria We can see some logic in one of the overarching principles of the B.C. Liberal approach to education. It is true the province cannot afford to bankroll the system in complete disregard for declining enrolment numbers; some form of consolidation is more than prudent, it’s necessary. What is completely asinine, however, is the way the government has handed communities across the province a brand-new expense without giving them the proper tools to deal with it. We are referring, of course, to the deal the provincial bargaining agent for B.C.’s school districts just struck with support staff workers. The deal — which calls for raises of 3.5 per cent over two years — is hardly ridiculous, given the cost of living is likely to go up four per cent during that same period. Yet the province has left it up to the local school districts — which rely almost entirely on government per-student grants to operate — to find that money. And the money will be found in the same places it has always been found under the Liberal tenure: school closures, program cutbacks, decreased maintenance and layoffs. It’s time the province stopped treating school districts like prodigal sons on fixed allowances. It’s time it started taking some responsibility and provided some leadership. Part of that is providing some direction on where school districts should be headed and the resources necessary to pay for what has happened and what has to happen. The cycle has been spiralling downward for more than a decade. Step up and help turn this thing around. Cowichan News Leader Pictorial
Record Question of the Week This week: Seventy-three per cent of respondents so far say they are upset because the B.C. Liberals cancelled the fall legislative sitting. Should MLAs be debating issues for the next few months? Visit www.comoxvalleyrecord.com and vote in the Poll on the mainpage. There’s plenty new at the Mount Washington Alpine Resort for 2013-14, beginning with the relocation and expansion of the Tube Park.
Monthly rent of $900 to $1,100 for a proposed development in Courtenay might be “very affordable” for some, but not for many others.
CVRD reps not busy enough? Dear editor, To the area reps and mayor of Courtenay: It would seem to me that you people think you do not have enough to do. Right now, you take care of business registration, zoning bylaws, community planning, fire stations, water board, libraries, landfill, recreation (baseball and soccer fields), transit, parks and trails, environmental assessment, and greenway taxes. Now you want to get into rural garbage pickup, which would mean putting a large group of people out of work. I have had my garbage picked
up by the rural garbage companies for over 30 years. Both companies have been excellent in their business practice. Now after years of service, our regional district wants them eliminated. We are going to get a vote on this issue Nov. 16. I urge the
rural residents to stop the area reps’ expansion plans. I think they have enough to do as it is. Leave our garbage people with the jobs they have had for years and have done very well. If our area reps are bored because of lack of work, perhaps we should get rid of one or two of them. Mike Lazare, Black Creek Editor’s note: In fairness to Mayor Larry Jangula, the rural garbage pickup proposal comes from the Comox Valley Regional District, not the City of Courtenay.

ern environmental ideas to force people to be responsible. F. Fern, Merville

No incentive in garbage pickup Dear editor, The officials who designed a Comox Valley rural garbage pickup scheme are giving no incentive to people to behave responsibly, because they are charging a flat rate, instead of charging people by the pound, at curbside. This plan is encouraging people to basically dump everything, and not separate cans, bottles, paper, cardboard, and waste that could have been composted. There is no practical way to inspect the contents of green garbage bags, etc., for such recyclables. The only environmentally responsible, and cost-effective system, is to charge people by the pound. As the system currently exists, we are encouraged to do the composting, separate cans and bottles, and do the work necessary. You can’t expect BFI Canada to take on this difficult and timeconsuming job. In my case, I need to make only about four trips a year to the Cumberland depot, which is very cost-effective, compared to a $150 charge that doesn’t
How can this happen? Dear editor, This morning I took my dogs for a walk in Simms Millennium Park. I am still in disbelief at what I saw. Sitting on one of the benches near the back of the park was a man (40 to 50 years old) with a small propane bottle (the type used with a Coleman stove) with a small round heater attached to it. He was blowing warm air at his feet. I was speechless and stunned. I regret I didn’t take
time out to talk to him. He had a sleeping bag rolled up beside him and a bike attachment that carries a child, so possibly he is homeless. Where are the facilities where this man would be kept safe, fed and warm? Some of these people have mental issues and are afraid to stay at the men’s shelter. How can this be happening in Canada in this day and age? A. Levy, Courtenay

Kitty Coleman park infighting harming wildlife Dear editor, Infighting at Kitty Coleman Provincial Park is a local residents’ fight to ignore the law requiring all dogs to be on leash. These local residents are daily visiting the park, talking and making it obvious they have taken their fight to the tourists as well as the park board. Being a third party, and only here while a wildlife count is taking place, I am truly on the side of the park’s
inhabitants. You have bear, deer, squirrels, mink, eagles, ravens and many more small rodents to consider when walking your dogs and enjoying your jewel on the Georgia Strait. This fight and antiestablishment attitude has had a detrimental effect on the wildlife that inhabits this park. The bears are malnourished and are solely nighttime feeders and at this time
Dear editor, I’m forwarding this letter to you in response to the recent newspaper article in your paper on Aug. 6 concerning a proposed vision for a Comox Lake watershed sustainable use recreational area. Dear editor, There are so many things that you don’t report on: the fireworks ban in Comox, for instance, that upset many families and hurt several fireworks sellers, right before Halloween. many of the details within the Comox Valley Conservation Strategy Community Partnership’s proposal that their group envisions. The Courtenay & District Fish and Game Protective Association feels the watershed should be available to all user groups that currently and in future, may operate or do business within the watershed so long as their activities are done in an ecologically sound
manner that is neither harmful nor damaging to the existing major water courses within this watershed. In particular the Courtenay & District Fish and Game Protective Association supports the existing government structures and processes for managing the development of the watershed, including our Comox Valley water supply, as long as this is also done in an ecologically sound manner. Our association
sees no need or advantage at this time, to begin to create a new unelected, specialpurpose administrative body to carry out this function in order to bring the Comox Valley Conservation Strategy Community Partnership’s management visions to fruition. Our board of directors respectfully requests that the Comox Valley Conservation Strategy Community Partnership no longer suggests or
it, let alone announcing it. But you’re reporting on Leslie Eaton’s 30-day yoga challenge? That’s what you think is important? There are so many more important things happening to us and for us in the Valley. Last night’s showing of GMO/OMG, for instance. There we learned about the unlabelled
and inescapable presence of genetically modified organisms in our processed foods, meat, dairy — even the rainbow trout the filmmaker’s son caught in Sequoia National Park — thanks to the bullies of GMOs, Monsanto, who own something like 86 per cent of the market. (See the film. It and many other meaning-
ful documentaries are in the World Community Film Society’s lending library at Rewind Coffeebar and Seeds Food Market, for a $10 membership fee.) I’m speechless. And I wish the Record would be a little more speechless, too, about stupid, meaningless things. Judy Johnson, Comox

So, is our planet warming or not? Dear editor, Re: Justin D. Whitehead’s letter (Record, Sept. 30), entitled “Do you really want Earth to be choked by CO2 like Venus?” Over the past several years, the global warming debate has changed from “global warming” to “climate change.” I ask when has the climate not changed? If the Earth is warming, why not stick to global warming? Is it possible that the Earth isn’t warming anymore?
Data has surfaced that jeopardizes the legitimacy of the global warming activists’ standpoint. UTDOOR A MayLIVING 2013 article posted by the Met Office found that the earlier months of the year were the coldest seen in over 50 years. If global temperatures are staying M the same or decreasing, and CO2 has a warming effect on the planet, then the only practical conclusion is that the Earth itself must be cooling. whistled for his dog at this precise moment I’m sure there would have been a dead cub. I spoke to the owner and told him to put his dog on leash as the mama bear (a sow) was under a fir not far from him and that the dog should be kept in overnight as these bears have great scent and great memory. In reply, the man threw long pieces of lumber and rocks into the wooded area where the bears were. He chased them off and there went another night for them to try and catch fish running in the creek. There is a whole lot of you residents that I have seen who are respectful of this park as well as keeping your dogs on leash. But put all your differences aside and help the inhabitants of this wonderful jewel of the Georgia Strait. Obey the law, and it
is a well-written law with a hefty fine. In doing so, you will help the wildlife and please if you have to infight about anything, catch those tourists who disrespect your park by emptying their holding tanks on the parks land, by roaring around in circles on the park’s green grass. Also, the ones who let their dogs go without supervision while they have dinner or sleep. Tell the parks board about those same tourists who chop trees and destroy wildlife or harass it. Get licence plates or description of vehicles that come and let their dogs out to poo and don’t clean it up. Help one another keep this provincial park a money-making, wonderfully clean natural forest. Carole Gilmore Hughes, Chemainus

School home took 35 years

After nearly 35 years, the local Christian school has found a permanent home in the Comox Valley. Northgate Christian Education Society bought the former Brooklyn Elementary School building in Comox from the Comox Valley School District. The Brooklyn school gym was packed Wednesday as the announcement was made that Gateway Academy, (formerly Comox Valley Christian School), now has a permanent home. “This is 35 years in coming,” said Northgate Foursquare Church Pastor Scott Gaglardi. In “1979, in the basement of a church, there was a Christian school started, and the dream and the prayer from the beginning I know was that there that the sense would be a Christian school in the of belonging, Comox Valley, and the sense of that school would belonging for a be from K to 12 student connected and they would have their own to their school, facility on their is one of the own property, most important and today, Oct. 9, 2013, that dream factors in student gets realized.” achievement. Bought for $2.4 Sherry Elwood million from the Comox Valley School District, the site at 1475 Noel Ave. now officially belongs to Gateway Academy, though students will remain at the Wallace Avenue site until February so the new site can be readied for occupancy. Board of Education Comox trustee Peter Coleman noted the site features a sensitive riparian area that must be protected, and a statutory right of way on the west side of the playing field has been established. He noted the Comox Valley School District, the Town of Comox and Northgate Education Society worked together to come to an agreement which ensures the sensitive area will be protected and the community will have access, via the right of way. “The most important thing is that this place is going to be a school again,” he continued. Comox Valley School District superintendent Sherry Elwood added closing Brooklyn school had been a hard decision in 2011, and she was delighted Gateway Academy now has a permanent location. “I know that the sense of belonging, the sense of belonging for a student connected to their school, is the one of the most important factors in student achievement,” she said, noting the school’s “suitcase journey” of temporary locations over the years. For more information about Gateway Academy, visit www.cvchristian.com or call writer@comoxvalleyrecord.com 250-339-1200.
