County investigation not enough — Wildrose PAUL COWLEY Black Press Wildrose Party justice critic Shayne Saskiw believes a County of Stettler internal investigation of partisan fundraising doesn’t go far enough. Saskiw still wants to see Elections Alberta get involved with its own probe. The Wildrose Party alleged last month that a county employee had posted election signs while on shift for the county for then-Progressive Conservative MLA Jack Hayden years ago. Another employee allegedly promoted Hayden’s Facebook page while at work. Hayden lost the 2010 election to Wildrose candidate Rick Strankman. A Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy request was made for any records of municipal resources

being used for partisan purposes. A county investigation found no truth to the claims involving employees doing work for the Tories. But a review going back almost a decade found county politicians and staffers had improperly been reimbursed for attending Tory party events to the tune of $6,540. All of the payments dated prior to 2010. “Taxpayer dollars, whether municipal, provincial or federal, should not be going to partisan purposes,” said Saskiw. “It’s wrong and the money should be immediately repaid. We’ll leave it to Elections Alberta to determine what the appropriate penalty should be in this case.” County Reeve Wayne Nixon said a week ago Monday that attending the meetings had been seen previously as a

routine cost of business and a useful way to meet with government leaders. The practice was stopped by the current council, which was elected in 2010. As for allegations that an employee was asked to put out election signs on municipal time and another worker promoted Hayden’s re-election Facebook page while at work, a county investigation found no evidence of either incident. Nixon said the Wildrose has been asked, but has yet to produce, the statements backing up those claims. Nixon was critical of the party’s tactics, calling it a “witch hunt,” adding the party should focus on more important issues for constituents. Saskiw said the results show this was no witch hunt. “I think most taxpayers and most Albertans would be frankly shocked at

that type of statement to say it was a witch hunt when in fact illegal donations have been found,” he said. Saskiw said he has not been contacted by the reeve for more information. However, any information backing up the allegations will be provided to Elections Alberta if it investigates. Under the law, Elections Alberta will not disclose whether it is investigating unless there has been a finding of wrongdoing. A number of Alberta municipalities found themselves on the wrong side of election laws earlier this year. In February, the chief electoral officer posted the results of an investigation that found 45 cases of illegal contributions, all involving either the Tory party or one of its constituency associations. Total donations topped $20,000.

Voters go to polls on Monday R ICHARD F ROESE Independent reporter

ELECTION SIGNS VANDALIZED — Vandals hit the campaign trail on the weekend, destroying signs for Town of Stettler council rookie candidates — and Stettler businessmen — Zachary Jackson and Sean Nolls.

Voters head to the polls this Monday in the Town of Stettler, County of Stettler, Donalda, Botha and Gadsby — and elsewhere in the province — to elect councils for new four-year terms. With polls open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., electors can cast ballots at defined stations. For the Town of Stettler, polls will be located at Stettler Community Hall to elect six councillors. Among the challengers, Will Brown, Zachary Jackson, Sean Nolls, Karen Sernecky, James (Jim) Smith and Wayne Tebbe seek to unseat incumbents Darcy Bachman, Al Campbell, Malcolm Fischer, Peter Simons and Steven Wildeboer. Both acclaimed to their respective leadership positions, the town mayor and county reeve urge voters to get to the polls. “We have 11 candidates offering their services to help the town and we owe it to those people to understand what they stand for and to help choose the next council,” said Stettler Mayor Dick Richards, who has served as mayor for four years. Richards also noted that many people in countries throughout the world don’t have the same democratic right that Canadians fought hard for in wars. For voters in the county, the message is similar. “I urge voters to make sure they know the facts about any issues that may be brought up,” said Reeve Wayne Nixon, who was acclaimed in Red Willow– Donalda. “Discount rumours, research the facts and vote for the person that you think will best represent the best interests of ratepayers in the county.” County vote in five wards County of Stettler voters in five of the seven wards cast votes, with the county office accepting ballots in all wards. Specifically, electors will vote in: — Byemoor-Endiang at Byemoor Community Hall, as incumbent Lawrence Wilkie faces former councillor Les Stulberg and John Schofer, who is also seeking to return to Clearview School Division. — Big Valley at Big Valley Jubilee Hall, where incumbent Terry Schiffner is challenged by Dave Grover, who was unseated in the last election.

County in hunt for new PR voice RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter Mired in controversy in recent weeks, County of Stettler has heard good news at the main office. “Our director of communications is expecting twins,” Reeve Wayne Nixon said Tuesday when asked about a job posting last week for a temporary position. “This is very positive news for the county.”

Shawna Benson will soon take a maternity leave, as the position will be filled for 16 months. Nixon said Benson’s planned departure has nothing to do with recent complaints from the Wildrose party about her alleged use of county email to back the PC party in the last provincial election. Pheasantback seeks reprieve from county After buying Pheasantback Golf Course this summer, the new owner has asked County of Stettler to cancel taxes of $24,000

for this year. At its monthly meeting in October, county council heard a request from Gary Grant, who bought the course north of Stettler in late July after it went into receivership in September 2012. “We have postponed any decision until after the assessment review,” Reeve Wayne Nixon said after the meeting. With taxes at $24,441.86, Grant noted that he has also filed an appeal for the property assessment. “I ask council to cancel the taxes for this year,”

Grant said, noting that he is seeking to get the property assessed down to $500,000. He further asked council to give golf courses a tax break, because the Stettler Golf and County Club annually pays just under $300 taxes per year, though council has expressed not to give special treatment to golf courses. With general manager Ken Graham as business partner, Grant plans to add a park for recreational vehicles and a condominium complex in the next few years that he said would add to the tax base.

— Botha-Gadsby at Gadsby Community Hall, with incumbent Greggory Jackson and former reeve Vic Carey on the ballot. — Stettler ward at the county office, with incumbent Blake Chapman challenged by Ernie Gendre. — Erskine-Buffalo Lake at Erskine IOOF Hall, as incumbent Joe Gendre again faces a challenge from Guy Neitz. Donalda: four seeking three seats Electors in Donalda will have four names on the ballot to choose three councillors with Mayor Bruce Gartside and incumbent Dan Knudtson joined by Shane Fox and D. Paul McKay. Botha: four names on ballot Three seats are being contested by four candidates, Fay Betts, Flo Iskiw, Ken Hoekstra and Jim Renschler. Gadsby candidates announced For three seats on Gadsby council, Brian Burks, Kim Cooper, Fred Entwisle and Laura KellyStevenson are in the running.

Future even brighter for Stettler high school student CHASE ROSLAND Independent reporter A Grade 10 student from Stettler has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship. Keirsten Docherty, a proud member of the Heartland Youth Centre and the Stettler Boys and Girls Club, was awarded Future Shop’s future-generation scholarship Oct. 3 at the Red Deer Future Shop. In partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada (BGCC), Future Shop presented 23 awards this year to Grade 10 students across Canada. Docherty was one of three Grade 10 students in Alberta to receive the scholarship. “I’m very thankful for the scholarship,” Docherty said after receiving her award. “It will help reach my dream of becoming an anthropologist, because it takes 11 years of schooling to become an anthropologist.” The program encourages young people to see post-secondary education as a realistic option for life after

high school. Docherty was presented the first portion of the incremental scholarship on Saturday. A $750 Future Shop gift certificate goes toward a laptop to help with her high school studies. Docherty will receive $250 in Grade 12 to pay for any post-secondary application fees. The remaining $4,000 will be paid directly to the post-secondary institution she will attend. “I can’t begin to explain how much this will help toward my future schooling,” said Docherty. “Receiving this award reminds me of what I can do and pushes me to try even harder.” Docherty has been actively involved in Stettler’s boys and girls club summer camps from a young age. As she grew older, she continued to participate at the club by joining in on teen trips and volunteering at club fundraisers. Most recently, she has been an active member of the Keystone program — a leadership program that has helped her not only become more responsible and in-

creases her self-confidence, but also has helped strengthen her views on the importance of giving back. “Keirsten is a deserving recipient of the scholarship,” said Sara Wengryn, Stettler’s Boys and Girls Club program director. “In addition to being an honours student, she is very involved in her community as a volunteer. Keirsten role-models leadership skills, goal-setting and hard work to her peers as a member of the Keystone Club, and the youth look up to her as a mentor.” The Boys and Girls Club of Stettler offers a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life, the club reported. “The Future Shop future generation scholarships encourage the boys and girls club of Stettler youth to dream big and explore a range of post-secondary options,” said Wengryn. “It really opens a lot of doors for young people in Stettler.”

THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT — DECISION 2013

RICHARD RROESE/Independent reporter

Donalda Mayor Bruce Gartside (left) speaks during the all-candidates forum last Thursday night, alongside challenger Shane Fox, incumbent Dan Knudtson and challenger Paul McKay and Clearview School Division trustee Cheri Neitz and school trustee challenger Patricia Standage.

Council, school board candidates pledge to save Donalda School RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter After the future of Donalda School was in doubt last spring, school board candidates in Donalda vowed last week to keep the school open. Incumbent Cheri Neitz and challenger Patricia Standage addressed the school’s future during an all-candidates forum last Thursday night in Donalda. It was the main message from the two candidates for the local Donalda-Erskine school ward, along with the four candidates for Donalda’s village council. “I want our Donalda School to stay open,” Standage said. “I want to keep it sustainable and vibrant, and I believe in small public schools.” Serving on the board for six years, Neitz agreed. “I have battled for Donalda School and I will stand up to fight for your children and do what is best

for them,” she said. “We (as trustees) represent the whole division and every single school is important to me.” Both Neitz and Standage are from Erskine. Enrolment at Donalda School has risen to 59 students from 52 last year in kindergarten to Grade 9. Responding to questions about ways to increase enrolment, Standage urged council to keep taxes low, while Neitz suggested that the village attract more residents with children and add more businesses, such as a gas station. Residents also urged the trustee candidates to find ways to keep local K-9 students from leaving to Stettler schools. “Donalda School needs to stay here,” said Shane Fox, a challenger for council and a father with young children. “I want to promote young families.” Two other candidates shared those views about the school’s future. “One of the most important issues

in the village is the school,” said Dan Knudtson, a businessman elected to council last April in a byelection. “That’s the hub of the community.” Seeking to return to council, Paul McKay also spoke of the school’s value. “I believe the school is important to the village and it’s important to fight for,” said McKay, who served on council from 1999 to 2009. The incumbent mayor said council is connected with the Clearview School Division. “We have fought, and I feel succeeded, to keep our school and in doing so, have developed a good working relationship with Clearview Street, Stettler School Division,Main which is very critical to the village,” said Bruce Gartside, the mayor for the past three years and a Donalda resident for five years. “Keeping our school is crucial to our village.” During discussion, council and trustees invited residents to offer ideas to enhance the school.

Village council contenders share their Donalda vision Lower taxes, a clear vision for Donalda, more residents and businesses were top issues suggested during an all-candidates forum last Thursday. Although there are no municipal races in Bashaw, residents of Donalda are gearing up for election day next Monday. “We’ve been trying to keep tax increases low, but operating budgets are tight and we have to prioritize projects,” said Bruce Gartside, the Donalda mayor for the past three years in his first term on council. On the economic front, he said it’s a challenge to draw businesses to rural areas such as Donalda, which had a population of 259 in the 2011 census. “It’s difficult to draw business to communities with small populations,” Gartside said. “Most businesses want larger populations.” Incumbent councillor and local business owner Dan Knudtson expressed his view on that same issue. “The best that council can do is to create an environment that business wants to come here,” said Knudtson, who has served on council since a byelection last April.

“Council has to widen its vision and we have to get proactive. Let’s create opportunity, not force business.” Knudston, a longtime resident, suggested the village create a market niche with the strength of the community’s history and heritage. “We want to market our town and we need to work together,” Knudtson said. Paul McKay, who also has deep roots in the area, agreed that the village needs more businesses. While a convenience store and gas station have been suggested, efforts to attract such a business have had negative support from fuel dealers, he said. “But we could work on other businesses.” McKay suggested downtown focus on a theme and preserve historic buildings. Shane Fox, a resident of Donalda for six years, shared his passion to help enhance life in the community. “I believe in open and honest communication and equality, fiscal responsibility, safety in the community and street repairs,” Fox said. “I want to help make the community thrive, with more for children to do, and to bring in more families.”

Thanksgiving based on inner values

Published by Stettler Independent Management

Probably some of us still have left over turkey in the fridge, so perhaps it’s not too late to address the matter of thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as, “The act of giving thanks; grateful acknowledgment of benefits or favors; an expression of gratitude for something received, or done...” I appreciate that Dictionary.com, says almost the same thing, but adds, “especially to God.” There is actually quite a difference between the common view and the biblical view of thanksgiving. Most (like Webster) would attach the giving of thanks to acquiring possessions, the receiving of gifts or favors, or enjoying pleasant circumstances. The Bible however, contains such verses as 1Thessalonians 5:18 where we read, “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you...” Or, James 1:2 where it states, “When troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy...” On the basis of these two passages alone, it is evident that the biblical view of thanksgiving has little to do with receiving nice things or enjoying pleasant circumstances and is definitely not

(a division of Black Press Group Ltd.)

relegated to one weekend in October. Clearly, the giving of thanks from the Bible’s point of view, is not based upon external, environmental issues, but upon internal, spiritual values, realities and attitudes. In other words, from the biblical perspective, it is possible to be thankful without being on the receiving end and even when circumstances are less than ideal. Anne Steele (1811-1867) provides a vivid example for us. She had encountered numerous physical and emotional trials and disappointments in her life. Being a devout Christian however, she continued to thank and praise God. Anne’s biggest trial came on her wedding day, which she’d looked forward to with joyful

anticipation. The big day arrived and so did the guests, but the groom was missing. After waiting for an hour a messenger brought the sad news that Anne’s fiancé had accidentally drowned on his way to the wedding. The shock was almost too much for her to bear, but she regained her composure and maintained her spiritual integrity. She sat down and wrote a hymn of quiet acceptance and thankfulness. She titled it, “Father, Whate’er of Earthly Bliss.” Words from the 1st and 2nd stanza say, “Father, whate’er of earthly bliss Thy sovereign will denies, Accepted at Thy throne of grace, let this petition rise: Give me a calm, a thankful heart, from every murmur free! The blessings of Thy grace impart, and make me live for Thee.” “The unthankful heart...discovers no mercies; but the thankful heart sweeps through the day and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings!” Henry Ward Beecher

MONEY TALK

Issues to consider in administering a will By Peter Boys ‘The Financial Coach’ Many people will become executors (now called a personal representative) for the wills of their parents, family members or close friends. But the job’s responsibilities may expose them to significant liability. The biggest risk to a personal representative is the will itself, because when it’s unclear, it can put them in a dangerous position. When people who use doit-yourself will kits, there’s often little guidance about the duties and roles of a personal representative, so it’s important to get professional advice. Personal and household items can be especially problematic. As wills often don’t cover the contents of the home, family members end up helping themselves

to mementos they believe their parents meant them to have. The resulting family disputes can be especially bitter when they centre on sentimental items such as photo albums. This can lead to accounting headaches for the personal representative. Personal representatives may avoid hiring professionals to mediate these issues to minimize expense to the estate. Yet they are liable for any loss they may cause through negligence or mistakes, even if acting in good faith. Personal representatives can be liable for losses resulting from selling property below its market value, accidentally selling valuable items at garage sales, or giving expensive household goods to charity. Regular communication with all the beneficiaries of the will is the most ef-

fective way to avoid complaints, misperceptions and accusations of bias. Keep good records. Receipts, bank deposits and other documentation help prove a personal representative acted expediently and professionally. If you don’t know, get qualified help; an accountant to file a tax return, a money manager to manage trusts, a lawyer for probate, etc. to help avoid errors and mistakes. Obtain three appraisals before selling or disbursing real estate, personal property, collectibles and other assets of unknown value. It’s tempting to try to save money by not hiring appraisers, or hurrying the process along to keep beneficiaries happy by, but not taking the time to understand what is being sold is a serious mistake. In extreme cases, Personal

representatives can be removed, forced to repay losses out of their fee, and even taken to court. They can also be liable for court costs. Personal representatives concerned about potential liability can purchase insurance to cover negligence, errors and legal fees if a challenge is brought to court. Typical insurance costs $1,700 for a three-year term per $1 million of estate value. Most offer three years of protection, enough time to wrap up most estates. Most insurers require that a qualified estate lawyer be hired before issuing a policy. For those worried about potential liability, insurance is the only option, as there’s no other way to protect one’s self against damages or costs of a legal

Richard Froese Reporter

defense. Before setting up a will, it’s common courtesy to get permission before appointing someone to be the personal representative to a will. If you are inexperienced you might want to avoid getting involved in a difficult estate in the first place. If you have been appointed you should take the will to an experienced lawyer and ask what potential problems there could be. Could it end up with me being sued? A qualified lawyer can help you detect problems that might arise from such things as out-of-date wills, illogical or unusual provisions, business or real estate assets that might be difficult to sell or value, or overseas beneficiaries. You can choose to decline the appointment, or purchase insurance before administering the estate.

and in following through on them. I hope that continues. These are areas I believe council will need to focus on in the coming term: 1. Continuing to make physician recruitment a priority and ensuring that Stettler has a strong voice when addressing health care and seniors’ housing issues with the province; 2. Maintaining and improving Stettler’s excellent recreation infrastructure and working with our partners at the County of Stettler to develop a long-term, equitable funding formula for recreation; 3. Developing improvements to the Intermunicipal Development Plan with the County of Stettler and continuing an emphasis on fair and well-thought-out landuse planning.

YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: This question is hard for me to answer, because I believe one of my attributes is thinking of others first, instead of bragging up or talking of myself. Since I’m requested to answer, I believe I’m honest and treat each and every person with equality. I always think of others first. With my family, their health, interests and careers are

SIGNS DOT THE TOWN, COUNTY AND SCHOOL BOARD CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Clearview on the ballot

O S

RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter Heading to the polls this Monday, voters for Clearview School Division vote in three wards. Polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with stations for the Stettler ward at Stettler Community Hall. For voters in the Erskine-Donalda ward, ballots can be cast at County of Stettler office, Erskine IOOF Hall and Village of Donalda office. Out in the eastern region, voters in Ward 4 can vote at Byemoor Community Centre, Village of Botha office, Gadsby Community Hall and County of Stettler office. “We are encouraging residents of Town of Stettler and in the County of Stettler to help choose the community members who will serve on the board of trustees by casting a ballot for school trustee when they vote in the upcoming Oct. 21 election, returning officer Peter Neale said. Stettler Ward 3 incumbent Peter Simons and newcomers Staci Gerlitz and Dave Goodwin are vying for two seats. Again, Simons will seek to maintain his seats on Clearview and councillor for the Town of Stettler. For the area of Erskine and Donalda (Ward 1), Patricia Standage challenges incumbent trustee Cheri Neitz, also of Erskine. In the Botha, Gadsby, Byemoor area (Ward 4), incumbent Rhonda Maginn faces former trustee John Schofer, who is also seeking a seat on County of Stettler council for Byemoor-Endiang. “Voting for school board trustees on election day is important because the school board makes decisions that affect the community’s economic, social and cultural life, Neale said. He noted the board annually manages more than 31 million in tax dollars, employs over 450 people and is responsible for the care and education of more than 2,400 local school-aged children. “Our policies and decisions have a tremendous impact on the local community, Neale said.

YEARS IN GOVERNMENT/ON SCHOOL BOARD: Three years. YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I am involved in the Byemoor Hall, Byemoor School, Ag Society, minor hockey; pretty much every aspect. If I’m not on a committee and someone calls, I’m generally there with a helping hand. We all rely on each other — for that is what living in a small, rural community is all about. YOUR GREATEST AT-

TRIBUTES: People have told me that I listen to both sides of situations and then like a balance scale try to be fair to everyone involved. MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: That we put the finest educators in front of our children, whether it’s in our larger or small, rural schools. ELECTION DAY: MONDAY, OCT. 21

Vote for future of community ELECTION COMMENTARY R ICHARD FROESE Independent reporter Decision day is this Monday, when voters go to the polls to elect municipal councils and school trustees for the next four years. With that term extended from three years, voting is more crucial because elected officials will serve for a longer time than in the past. Voters in the two largest municipalities get a final opportunity this week to hear the local contenders during all-candidates forums for the Town of Stettler contenders tonight and for the County of Stettler on Thursday, with both sessions at Stettler Agriplex Pavilion Room from 7 to 9 p.m. With just a few days to go before the election, some people have suggested that voters have already made up their mind about who they will support in the ballot box. Candidates for school trustees for the Clearview School Division were already on stage last night for their all-candidates forum. So, who will be the best candidates to lead local municipalities and school boards for the next four years? Just like looking at a person applying for a job interview, a voter might simply look to experience. However, re-electing incumbents might not always be good, either. Fresh blood and people with new ideas always keeps government bodies and organizations even more healthy. With many incumbents likely in their final elections, now is a good time to fill councils and school board with new and energetic candidates. Looking at the challengers, consider a new councillor or trustee who has renewed ideas and experience serving in various parts of the community. What candidates know the most and best about the community to help make wise decisions and contribute the most effectively to move the council and community forward? What candidate has a schedule that is most flexible to attend meetings and other functions as an elected official? Looking at all the election signs around the town and county, what candidates have been most serious and active to promote their strengths, passions, skill, experiences and vision for the future of their community? Most importantly is that voters get out to the polls on Monday or to advance polls and exercise your democratic right that people in so many countries around the world don’t have. As many people have said in recent weeks, if you don’t vote Monday, you can’t complain in the next four years.

MEET THE CANDIDATES

COUNTY OF STETTLER COUNCIL NAME: Vic Carey.

NAME: Greggory Jackson.

NAME: Blake Chapman.

HOMETOWN: Gadsby.

HOMETOWN: Gadsby.

HOMETOWN: Stettler.

AGE: 69.

AGE: 36.

AGE: 62.

FAMILY: My wife Barbara and I have been married 45 years and raised our son Wesley and daughter Joanna and we have three grandsons and one granddaughter.

FAMILY: I have three amazing kids — Hannah, Grady and Will.

FAMILY: Married with three grown children.

YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: Nine years on County of Stettler council. YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I helped build new ball diamonds in Gadsby and volunteered at Omega Cemetery and at other community functions. YOUR HOBBIES: Woodworking, fishing, golfing and hunting. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: I offer

strong community support and spirit, reliability and availability. MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: Roads are a big issue. Better maintenance and better gravel are needed. I think that the county can and should be run more efficiently.

HEAD-TO-HEAD County of Stettler council candidates profiled on this page: Ward 3 (Botha-Gadsby) — Vic Carey, Greggory Jackson (x). Ward 4 (Stettler) — Blake Chapman (x), Ernie Gendre. Ward 6 (Erskine-Buffalo Lake) — Joe Gendre (x), Guy Neitz. x — denotes incumbent.

YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: Three years’ experience as a councillor; central zone rep on the provincial AAMDC standing issues committee on infrastructure, transportation and municipal affairs; vice-chairman of the county Ag Service Board; president of the Battle River Research Group; co-chair of the physician recruitment and retention committee and chairman of Stettler Regional Fire Authority; also on recreation board, Stettler Health Services Foundation and the County of Stettler Housing Authority. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: A 4-H leader, volunteer at Gadsby Omega Circle Cemetery, past-president and board member of Beaver Rural Electrification Association. HOBBIES: Spending time with my children and attending their recreation activities; water sports, running, hiking and camping. GREATEST ATTRIBUTES:

I’m very conscious of different points of views people may hold and understand the fact that no one person has the perfect answer. I have certificates in team-building and ag finance — critical factors in government — in

YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: Nine.

fostering productive groupmanagement strategies and understanding the complexities in municipal accounting and finance practices. MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: The main issues and potential solutions that are important to ratepayers are what matters to me, elected to council or not. I hope to continue to work with administration to best represent the ratepayers throughout the county. With the provincial purse strings tightening, the county needs to take a proactive approach to managing tax dollars responsibly, along with balancing the maintenance and upkeep of facilities and infrastructure. We’re fortunate to live in a prosperous province, but must not take it for granted that times will always be booming. Placing funds in reserve for future stability is key to a successful management plan. This is important to me.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Minor soccer coach; educator in holistic management; board member of Stettler and District Agricultural Society; chairman of county municipal planning commission; vice-chairman of Stettler Ambulance; pastpresident of Stettler and District Family and Community Support Services; member of Red Deer River Water Alliance; board member of Stettler Housing Authority; vice-chairman of the new swimming pool planning committee; member of Pheasantback Golf Club and the County of Stettler Ag Service Board; educator in holistic management. HOBBIES: Golf. GREATEST ATTRIBUTES:

My ability to listen with empathy, sort out the problem or situation, and then find a solution or compromise that works for all concerned. Through my holistic management training received in Santa Fe, Mexico, I was trained in the process of policy formation and problemsolving. Also, I was trained in the process of budget information and the process of monitoring a budget.

NAME: Ernie Gendre.

NAME: Joe Gendre.

NAME: Guy Neitz.

HOMETOWN: Born and raised on a mixed farm northwest of Erskine. Presently, we own a farm near Botha.

HOMETOWN: Erskine.

HOMETOWN: Erskine.

AGE: 52.

AGE: 46.

FAMILY: Married with four children ages four, 12, 14 and 18.

FAMILY: Wife Cheri and children Ty, Kylie and Shayla.

YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: Nine.

YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: None.

AGE: 58. FAMILY: Married 33 years, and two adult children. YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: None. YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: None at present. YOUR HOBBIES: Too busy for hobbies. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: My various work experience over the years is my greatest attribute. In 1975, I was employed by the County of Stettler for four years on road construction. The next six years, I worked on drilling rigs, then eventually back into farming. The 1980s were rough years in the farming occupation, which I left to diversify into heavy equipment in 1989 — a business that we are still active in to date. It includes lease preparation, water and sewer installation and road-building.

MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: I believe in the democratic process of where there should be challenges to anyone seeking office. I strongly believe in the relationships between the ratepayers/landowners and council, along with a great working atmosphere shared with county employees. This is quite a different path to be taking, but I have seen and heard of concerns of which I can relate to and I will have a voice and be a representative to the people at council. I will strive to be a councillor who people can talk with, who listens and works hard to get people and the community what they need.

ELECTION DAY: OCT. 21

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Radio talk of the town for Erskine, chairman of Agriculture Services Board, chairman of Stettler Family and Community Support Services, secretary of Buffalo Lake Management Team, Stettler Waste Management Authority, Erskine Cemetery Board, Nevis Community Hall Association, Knights of Columbus, tent rentals and competitive volleyball co-ordinator. I have also worked numerous casinos for Erskine Rec Board, Nevis Hall and the Stettler Public Library. HOBBIES: Volleyball, kayaking, gardening and travel. GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: I make myself available and approachable to discuss any ratepayers’ issues or concerns. If there is an issue, I like to find multiple angles and options to get the best results. MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: Moving our community forward through implementation of the Erskine

Concept Plan that council adopted unanimously is paramount. After consultation with Erskine residents, and after dollars and time taken to create this plan, we need to address concepts and get them implemented, such as to develop the new residential lots, begin surface water management and install a walking path along Highway 835 to maintain legal status for the highway crosswalk. The realization of a water reservoir large enough to provide enhanced fire protection for Erskine and area, with fire hydrants and a tank fill for fire trucks, agricultural and domestic needs, is essential. We need to bring to the forefront a recreational vehicle dump and fill station. It’s imperative to get residents’ co-operation to allow services and access for these improvements for the betterment of the community. A budget and timeline will need to be established with the co-operation of council and administration.

YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: — High school football coach: 21 years as offensive co-ordinator of the Stettler Wildcats. — Founding president of Stettler Minor Football Association (2002-2006). — Football and basketball referee. — Stettler Second Scout leader (four years). — Director for Drumheller/ Stettler Wildrose Constituency Association (20102011). — Committee member at large for the drafting of County of Stettler Municipal Development Plan (2009). YOUR HOBBIES: Sports: Football, horses & roping. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: Integrity, perseverance and dedication, decisive, communicator, leader through service and example. MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND

MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: Roads. We have tried several different new products for hard-surfacing and dust control. I think we finally may have a product that works (SP 90) and my hope is to get it laid on Liberal Road as soon as possible — and wherever dust control is required or requested. I was at the forefront of the rural water distribution program and would like to be at the completion of this amazing and necessary program of bringing potable water to so many households. There is a policy that still needs to be created for this program. Recreation is and will continue to be a problem for both the County of Stettler and Town of Stettler councils. I feel that within the next four years, with the right councillors involved, this problem can be a thing of the past.

YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: More often than not, the County of Stettler has come and said this is what we’re going to do for you, rather than consulting with the community to find their priorities and working with them to accomplish it. In an effort to align myself with your priorities, I will invite the community to come together with me three to four evenings a year where we can discuss issues and possible solutions to benefit our communities. Residential and infrastructure development in Erskine and area will be a pressing issue throughout the next council’s term. I want these projects to meet with your vision for our community and that they will be implemented with our residents’ best interests in mind.

There are NEW Voter ID requirements for the municipal elections. Upcoming municipal elections on October 21 across Alberta offer a chance to vote for the future of your community. New Voter ID requirements mean you’ll need to 13102DA2 13095DA1 bring proper identification to be able to vote. Check with your municipality about local requirements.

THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT — DECISION 2013

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

MEET THE CANDIDATES

COUNTY OF STETTLER COUNCIL NAME: Dave Grover.

NAME: Terry Schiffner.

NAME: John Schofer.

HOMETOWN: Big Valley/ Linda Hall (29 years); County of Stettler (57 years); we raise cattle and grow feed; we chose to raise and educate our family here.

HOMETOWN: Big Valley — Ward 2.

HOMETOWN: Byemoor. AGE: 57.

AGE: 65.

AGE: 57. FAMILY: Wife Lorraine; four children: Brad, Jolene (Neil), Bobbi-Jo (Mark) and Jamie (Dwayne); blessed with 11 grandchildren. YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: Nine years on County of Stettler council; after a three-year break, I feel refreshed and eager to return to the table as the Ward 2-Big Valley voice. YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Served on various boards and committees; assisted in fundrasing endeavours for facilities; enjoyed coaching minor ball and hockey. YOUR HOBBIES: Watching our grandchildren, play football, ball, hockey, etc.; hunting and fishing; visiting with friends and family. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: I am open, honest and direct and very approachable. I am open to suggestions on better or innovative ideas. I was born and raised here and am familiar with almost all of the residents, the lay of the land and needs of our people. MAIN ISSUES IN THE

FAMILY: Married with a great wife in Carolin, two fine boys, Len and Randy, a great daughter-in-law in Rebecca, and a cute granddaughter, Addison.

FAMILY: Wife Pat. We own a cow-calf operation and a back-grounding feedlot south of Stettler. We have four children and seven grandchildren, including a newborn girl.

CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: I’d like to see our road-building crew being able to return to rebuilding the amount of road as in the past; our crew has built many miles of road that are still excellent to date. During my years as chair/co-chair of the ambulance board, I was part of negotiating agreements with the province to retain three ambulances and have paramedics on board every shift. Still, today, we have excellent ambulance service — second to none in the province. Senior housing is still a top priortiy to me. During my previous terms on the Senior Housing Authority, we accomplished many upgrades to all of our senior accommodations in Big Valley and Stettler. I would like the chance to continue focusing on keeping our seniors’ lodges/manors a topquality lifestyle for those who built our area.

YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: Three. I have been privileged to serve as councillor. During my time on council, it has been a huge learning experience. The learning curve was made a lot easier by a reeve and council that were always willing to help, along with a great staff. YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: — Board of directors for the Clearview Cow-Calf Co-op. — Stettler Feeders’ Association. — Former director of the Stettler and District Agricultural Society. — 4-H leader in the area. — Served on several committees, including the library board, ag services board, disaster services and the fire commission. While on the fire commission, I helped secure a new fire hall and a more-efficient fire truck for Big Valley. YOUR HOBBIES: Grandchildren, camping and rodeos.

YEARS IN GOVERNMENT/ON SCHOOL BOARD: Twelve years on Clearview school board from 1998 to 2010. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: Good listener, like to learn, hard worker and determined. MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: We have been working non-stop on the quality of roads and I have been taking every single concern and as a result, roads in the Big Valley area are better maintained than they ever have been. We got Fenn Road paved and are now experimenting with a new hard-surfacing technique on Scollard Road, which we hope will save us a lot of money in the future. We have been working hard to keep our taxes at a reasonable rate. Although the rate has gone up slightly over the past three years, we’ve used that money to improve roads and services that we provide, including snow-plowing driveways.

YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: A member of the Sullivan Lake West Agricultural Society for 30 years as past president, organizer and worker. Member of the Byemoor Curling Club for many years as president, worker and volunteer. Volunteer in the community wherever asked. YOUR HOBBIES: Playing hockey, curling, dirt-biking, snowmobiling, skiing and bird-hunting, collecting and fixing anything with a motor. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: Hard worker; willing to come to the county council and ask the tough questions and get the best solutions. And willing to represent the area residents with a strong voice. Willing to speak my

mind — if asked to or not. And willing to hold the provincial government accountable. MAIN ISSUES IN THE CAMPAIGN AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: Fixing roads and clearing roads of snow as soon as possible. Making sure our bureaucracy stays the right size. Stop the spread of irrelevant rules and regulations. Get a plan in place to stop the spread of the noxious worm wood weed. Instead of giving money to the town for their grand schemes for believed county use, make sure the county communities’ infrastructure is kept up first. Find the solutions with help from the voters and other councillors, and get ’er done ASAP. It is a needed change.

COUNTY CONTENDERS NAME: Les Stulberg.

NAME: Lawrence Wilkie.

HOMETOWN: Endiang/ Byemoor.

HOMETOWN: Byemoor.

Ward 1 (Byemoor-Endiang) — John Schofer, Les Stulberg, Lawrence Wilkie (x).

AGE: —

Ward 2 (Big Valley) — Dave Grover, Terry Schiffner (x).

AGE: 58. FAMILY: I’m married, with three married daughters and six grandchildren.

FAMILY: My wife Rosemary and I have two sons, Travis and Tyler. YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: Three years on county council, during which time I was chair of the County of Stettler Housing Authority. Spent the last three years as the county member at large on the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, the Assessment Review Board, Family and Community Support Services board and Stettler Public Library board. YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I’ve been very active and committed to the ByemoorEndiang community for the past 40 years. I believe my dedication to the community speaks for itself. I’ll be able to achieve even more with a seat on county council. HOBBIES: Reading, photography, travel, writing, community projects and time with family and friends. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: I don’t take on roles lightly. I’m very committed to responsiblity. I understand the issues and am open-minded to input and new ideas. I’m a team player and work well with others to achieve results. I’ve taken additional train-

Ward 3 (Botha-Gadsby) — Vic Carey, Greggory Jackson (x).

YEARS IN GOVERNMENT: Nine. I was on county council for six years in the 1980s, and am presently on council since October 2010. ing in administrative law and principles of assessment to better serve the county. I’m a good listener and always accessible to hear concerns. I have the communication skills to be a strong voice. MAIN ISSUES AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: Road safety is of ultimate importance and hazardous areas need attention. I support improvements to all categories of the road system: from machinery roads to secondary highways. The county is also more than just roads and bridges: it’s people and communities that benefit from enhanced recycling programs, recreation support, seniors’ housing, safe and secure water, fire protection, community support services, libraries, museums, ambulance service, waste management and agricultural services. I would serve ratepayers’ needs by providing the services in the most efficient manner.

YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I have always been active in my community and am currently serving as president of the Endmoor Drop-In Society. I also volunteer with the Byemoor Curling Club and at the Byemoor fall supper. HOBBIES: Camping, playing cards, fishing, golf, and going to my grandchildren’s sporting events. YOUR GREATEST ATTRIBUTES: I am a good listener and I believe in finishing what I start, always to the best of my ability. MAIN ISSUES AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ADDRESS THEM: I believe that the main issue in our division has been roads. When I ran three years ago, I was concerned about the condition of the roads and the lack of gravel on them. This was a safety concern for those travelling in the area. Since I have been on

NOW IS THE

TIME TO SWITCH!

Ward 4 (Stettler) — Blake Chapman (x), Ernie Gendre.

council, the county has been putting more than double the amount of gravel on the roads. We have also initiated a program where heavily travelled roads will receive gravel every two years, while others will get gravel every three years — or as needed. Among other recent accomplishments, council has implemented a rural recycling program, which makes this resource accessible to all. I have made it a priority to open up communication and to maintain good relations with all community members and county staff. A good working relationship bodes well for all. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please phone. I can’t help if I don’t know the issues. When re-elected, I will continue to serve the ratepayers of the ByemoorEndiang division to the best of my ability. I would like to thank the community for their support.

Ward 6 (Erskine-Buffalo Lake) — Joe Gendre (x), Guy Neitz. x — denotes incumbent.

COUNTY ACCLAMATIONS Ward 5 (Erskine South-Warden) — James Nibourg (y). Ward 7 (Donalda-Red Willow) — Wayne Nixon (y). y — denotes re-elected by acclamation.

STETTLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL By Amore du Toit One can say thank you in very many languages: Thank you, dankie, vielen dank, gracias, merci, Siyabonga, to name but a few. In the spirit of the Thanksgiving season, we want to say thank you to our community. A BIG thank you goes out to Sobeys for donating a doughnut and a juice box for staff and students to enjoy on the morning of our Terry Fox Run. They were delicious! Thank you, also, to all of the SES staff that helped lead and organize the dances we had at recess, and for putting in hours of time counting pledge money. We are finalizing the total amount of money that we have raised, and it looks like Stettler Elementary has once again done an amazing job of raising money to help others. We will have an assembly soon to unveil our final total, and to share some of the stories and poems classes have written about Terry Fox while learning lessons about caring for others, never giving up, and always doing our best. Many classrooms have also discussed Terry Fox while learning about the 7 Habits. Terry is a good example of “Putting First Things First” and “Beginning with the End in Mind”. To celebrate a job well done, Jim’s Video has donated a movie rental to each classroom. Thank you to Jim’s Video for their continued support of our Run! If you are in the school, be sure to look at the mural that has been created near the office showing all of the students in SES running with Terry. Together we can do amazing things! Sarah Chapman’s grade fours have created fall branches and yarn turkeys in anticipation of Thanksgiving! Students created their own paper pulp using coloured paper shreddings to mold into leaves. Messy but fun! Students also listed the things they are grateful for onto leaves and attached them to trees. ON NOW AT YOUR ALBERTA GMC DEALERS. AlbertaGMC.com 1-800-GM-DRIVE. SATURDAY MARCH 10

THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ZONE

Thanksgiving is Mrs. Chapman’s favorite holiday! 4SC has also started a novel study on Little House in the Big Woods. This classic novel is helping students understand pioneer life and they are enjoying the adventures of the Ingalls Family. Students have also created pomanders (apples with whole cloves stuck into them) thanks to a donation of apples made by Owen Laughlin and his family. Our classroom smells wonderful! We also read about the Ingalls Family making their own bread and butter, and decided we would like to try it. Thank you to Ms. LaRose for teaching us to shake the cream until it becomes butter! Our warm bread also smelled delicious and was a great treat with this week’s cold weather. Grade four students started their swimming lessons this week. We also want to thank our wonderful Home and School for a yummy Hot Lunch this past Friday. Kindergarten students would also like to thank the very knowledgeable and entertaining Deputy Fire Chief Etienne Brugman and firefighters Elizabeth Fuller and Andrew Brysivk who did a great fire safety presentation. Students enjoyed examining the oxygen masks and firefighter uniforms. They loved it when the fire fighters “were blinded by smoke” while they had to rescue a volunteer student. The session was educational and entertaining. We are really lucky to be a part of a community where many different professions contribute to our students’ education. Oprah Winfrey once said: “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” Our staff wishes all families and students a blessed restful and safe thanksgiving. Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. — William Arthur Ward

Lightning in first with four straight wins Stettler takes a couple of close games on home ice to pull into top spot CHASE ROSLAND Independent reporter Including three victories in the past week, the Stettler Lightning hold a four-game winning streak that includes two wins on home ice on Thanksgiving weekend. The Lightning faced the Cochrane Generals last Saturday night and won 2-1. The Lightning outshot the Generals 36-26. Landon Potter scored the first goal midway through the first period, with Kyler O’Connor and DJ Kistner picking up the assists. Early in the second, Scott Ternes scored to make it 2-0, with the help of Dylan Houston and Adam Ternes. Shortly after, the Generals scored to make it 2-1, which was the final score after a scoreless third period. The day after, the Lightning faced the Airdrie Thunder to win the second game of the weekend 3-1. Simon Thieleman faced 24 shots, while the Thunder goalie had 34 come his way. Midway through the first period, Adam Ternes scored the first goal, with assists by Scott Ternes and Houston. Early in the second, Ryan Graff scored, with the help of Logan Davidson. The Thunder scored their only goal of the game on the power play in the middle of the third. Potter scored an empty-netter in the dying seconds, with the assist from linemate O’Connor. After seven games, the Lightning are at the top of the North Division, with four wins and three losses. The Lightning visit the Ponoka Stampeders tonight. Last-place Ponoka is winless after only playing four games this season. Last Tuesday, Stettler edged Blackfalds 5-4. The Lightning host the Three Hills Thrashers on Friday and visit the Red Deer Vipers on Saturday.

Wildcat Corner CHASE ROSLAND Independent reporter Stettler Wildcat crosscountry runners ventured to zones last week in Wetaskiwin. The races included up to 100 participants. Andrew Kim and Corey Garbutt of Grade 12 and Alicia Nibourg of Grade 11 have qualified for the provincials this Saturday in Drayton Valley. Kim, Garbutt and Nibourg placed 17th or 18th in their individual races. Wildcats’ Jennifer Taylor and Nikyta Lachowsky each had personal bests. The senior Wildcat girls beat CACHS in last week’s volleyball play. CACHS fought back, bringing the set to five games, with the final ending 15-13. “Quick middle hits and net play by Abby Tizzard, Morgan Van Dusen and Toni-Lyn Ganser, combined with strong serving and smart plays by Jaimie Ternes, made the difference,” said Wildcats coach Rachelle Campeau. Ternes was chosen player of the game for her “smart placement and strategy.”

THE STETTLER INDEPENDENT DISTRICT

DONALDA DIARY

RUMSEY RECORD

By Darlene Tantrum

By Patty Steen

The all-candidates’ forum was held at the Drop-In Centre last Thursday evening. The turnout wasn’t great. Hopefully, that won’t be reflected on election day Monday. Exercise your right to vote for village council and school board reps. On Oct. 16, there will be monthly Bingo at the DropIn Centre, starting at 7:30 p.m. Mark your calendars for Flu Shot Day on Oct. 23 at the Drop-In Centre. Birthday wishes go out to Leah Erickson, Anna Bailey, Colin Walker, Heather Blouin, Ken Norman, Linda Rider, Tracee Vikse, Randy Shepherd, Jesse Vikse, Maisie Burlock, Riley Carroll and anyone else celebrating a birthday this week. Happy Birthday!

I hope all who read this was able to celebrate a wonderful Thanksgivings this weekend and enjoy the beautiful weather. It was really something to enjoy. I had a call from Jim Krywcun, who wanted to remind me to put in another plug for the municipal elections coming this following Monday, Oct 21. It has been a long time since we have had to vote in a municipal election but Jim has thrown in his hat to run against Allen Avramenko for councillor of Division 4. It is important that you remember to bring a government issued form of ID such as drivers licence, passport, PAL or POL and make sure you get to the Hall on Monday and make a difference. I asked Jim what he understood about the job description and he replied that he would be responsible for road maintenance, trees and road obstruction, signage

placement and all concerns of this division. This division’s boundaries are from the County of Stettler on the north end to one mile south of the Rowley Road, each to the Delia Road and west to the river. If you are within these borders, you get a chance to has a say on who you would like to be Councillor. The councillor would have to attend all of the Starland County meetings and is also required to sit on two additional boards and attend all of those meetings. Well, that sounds timeconsuming! Good luck to Jim and Allen. The fall supper is fast approaching, I am sure you will soon be getting a phone call to see if you would like to help out in some way. This is a great event that really brings the community together like no other and dates back to the beginning of this community so is wonderful that it continues on in spite of our busy

schedules. The Fall Supper will take place at the Community Hall on Saturday, November 2 starting at 5 p.m. with a dance to follow. The band that will provide the music is Donimo so be sure to join in on the fun. I was remiss in reporting the sad news of the passing of Chris Jensen on Oc. 3. He was a long time member of our community and always good for a story. His memorial will be held on Oct. 28 at the Rumsey Hall at 2 p.m. so please join the family then to help them through this difficult time. B.J. Avramenko stopped in and was kind enough to let me know that her and Bill’s daughter Harlee is also graduating from Morrin School this year, so congratulations, Harlee. She is also very busy playing with the Stettler midget girls’ team and they have just started their season, so I hope I will get updates from time to time on their progress.

Corbyn Stoneman was happy to let me know that he has qualified to the A Team at the Peewee level in Trochu. He has enjoyed playing in Trochu for a few years now and loves the game of hockey, of course, he plays my favourite position, defence. Way to go, Corbyn; their first game was this past weekend so I hope he wasn’t too full of turkey to protect his goalie and net. Just teasing, Corbyn, I know you’ve got it covered. Thought for the week: One of the marvelous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way that we couldn’t as individuals. When we pool our strength and share the work and responsibilities, we can welcome many people, even those in deep distress, and perhaps help them find selfconfidence and inner healing. – Jean Vanier, Community and Growth

The first camp directors, Gary and Sandi Lefebvre, as well as the current directors, Kevin and Cynthia Perry, were present. So were many other staff from the in-between years. The group of 150-plus spent the day together. Starting with a brunch, they revisited the various ranch activities and ended with an early supper. There have been several changes made this past year at the ranch. The tepee village is gone, having been replaced by two bunk houses known as the “Pathway.” Staff are in the process of erecting a new central building that houses the kitchen, dining area and etc., for the younger campers. This year, 1,072 youngsters, aged six to 18, attended the weekly summer camps. The ranch also hosts many types of weekend retreats during the off-season. On Sept. 29, the Circle Square held its fourth annual ride-a-thon through the coulees. They had 100 riders, including the little ones, who raised $23,000 toward the running of the local horse program. The evening concluded with a BBQ. The staff wants to acknowledge their appreciation to the community for 35 years of continuing support. Congratulations to Brian and Sandra Gonda on the birth of a 5 lb. 7 oz. baby girl, Emily Alice, in Lacombe on Oct. 2. The Gondas also have a 2½-yearold son, Caleb. This is the fifth grandchild for Dianne Gonda.

LAISNEZ On October 7th, 2013 Charles Laisnez passed away suddenly at his home in Stettler, AB. “Charlie” as he was known to friends, was born on March 20th, 1936 in Big Valley, AB and was a beloved son of John and Ange Laisnez. He grew up in a demanding but pius farm home with his older sister Helene and his twin siblings, Albert and Rosella. After completing grade school in Scollard and Big Valley, Charlie went off Edmonton to finish his diploma. After a year at Olds College, he attended the University of Alberta completing a degree in Agriculture in 1959. He then returned to the farm to work with his Dad. Charles met Theresa in 1961 and they were married in July of 1962. Theresa’s daughter Jeannette was immediately a member of the Laisnez clan. Charles and Theresa had four more children, Christopher, Carol, Diane and Leann. Charles spent the next 38 years living and working on the farm he loved so much. He was also a active in the community as a Big Valley Hall Board member, the draw master at the Curling Club, 4-H Club Leader, as well as working to keep the rail line here a while longer. Charlie loved the time spent with friends and neighbours, either curling, playing in the Big Valley Band, or sitting around the kitchen table at coffee time. Charlie was fortunate to have his son in law Art and his son Chris working with him on the farm. His grandsons Jason, Tim and Luke grew up on the family farm and he was a great source of wisdom. He was thrilled years later when the twins, Mitchel and Jillian were born to Carol and again when Nicholas and Connor came into the fold. He and Theresa found themselves travelling often to Calgary for visits with the grand children, but what the children loved most was spending time on the farm with Grandpa. Long hikes to discover Dinosaur bones in the river coulee and riding the Combine during harvest were special times the children were able to share with Grandpa. In 2000, Charlie and Theresa moved to Stettler, but his heart was always still on the family farm. He was a deeply faithful man and in town, was able to spend more time at the church for weekday masses and as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a huge support to Theresa as her health declined and more medical attention was required. Sadly, he lost his wife of 41 years in 2003. He was overjoyed to hear of the 2006 arrival of his latest grandson, Rowan and found more reason to spend time at the farm. He loved to help Chris and Shauna with any odd jobs and of course, he was still The Man on the combine, right up to this past harvest. Charles married Adeline Petrussa Radke in November of 2004 and they enjoyed life in their beautiful home in Stettler where he tended to their lawn and the begonias. They enjoyed traveling to Edmonton and Calgary to visit their families and relished some wonderful holidays to Europe, California and Hawaii. Recently, Charles was fortunate to have his brother and best friend Albert close by to spend time with visiting, running errands, playing cards and praying together. Charles leaves his wife Adeline; his children Jeannette and Arthur LaRose, Chris and Shauna Laisnez, Carol Laisnez, Diane and Robert Wiebe and Leann Laisnez; his grandchildren, Jason and Emma LaRose, Tim LaRose and Luke and Tania LaRose, Mitchel and Jillian MacKay, Nicholas and Connor Wiebe, Rowan Laisnez and Nicole and Sienna Radke; and his great grandchildren, Liliana and Elijah LaRose and Riley LaRose. A Prayer Vigil was held for Charlie on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the Christ-King Catholic Church at 6:00 P.M. with the Mass of Christian Burial being held on Friday, October 11, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Donatus Ihekwoaba as celebrant. As an expression of sympathy and in loving memory of Charlie, memorial contributions may be made to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation in care of Brennen Funeral Home and Cremation Services, P.O. Box 193 Stettler, Alberta TOC 2LO who have been entrusted with the care and arrangements. 403.742.3315. Condolences can be forwarded to the family by visiting our website at www.brennenfuneralhome.com.

JENSEN Chresten Melgaard Jensen was born December 21, 1930 in Novling, Denmark. He was the youngest of Johannes and Ane’s six children. Chris grew up with his five sisters, Edith, Gudrun, Anny, Martha, and Lily on a farm in Novling. He attended 9 years of school and worked on the family farm. Chris emigrated to Canada in March of 1949 and was employed on the Kane Dairy Farm at Lethbridge. He came with very little money in his pocket and didn’t speak English. Chris soon started to learn the language by buying candy at the local store so the Kane children would read comic books with him. Later, he moved west of Big Valley and worked for Kerbes’ and Tipman’s for 6 years. At the same time he rented a half section of land. It was then he met Florence Kathleen Soop. They were married on June 23, 1958. In November of that year, they purchased the farm at Rumsey where their three children Alex, Doreen, and Brian were raised. A new farm house was built in 1967. Many evenings were spent with neighbours socializing, celebrating birthdays and many other occasions. Chris, Florence, and the children farmed which included grain, raising pigs, milking cows, and raising/showing Maine Anjou cattle. Chris volunteered in the community and curled in the square draw for a few years. He enjoyed his exotic birds which included peacocks, wild turkeys, and pheasants. He made sure the wild ones flying by his window never went hungry. In later years, on a warm afternoon, he could be found sitting beside his honeybee hive watching them work. In 1983, Chris and Florence celebrated their 25 th wedding anniversary. All five of Chris’ sisters made the trip from Denmark with their spouses to see where their little brother lived and meet his family. A visit enjoyed by all and the start of many trips between Canada and Denmark. He travelled with different family members and enjoyed every visit to his homeland. A year after Florence’s passing in 1996, he met a new lady, Irene Duncan, who became his next love. They spent the next 16 years enjoying life together. Irene came over every day and made a meal or two for Chris. They spent time socializing, playing cards, and dancing. They also went on many trips, cruises and voyages home to Denmark. Chris was very proud of his seven grandchildren, ranging in age from 8 to 25. Chris enjoyed them all, teasing and joking with them. He always had coins in the jar for a good report card and a deck of cards ready to play Casino with him. He supported them by attending hockey games, skating carnivals, and a band concert. Chris passed away September 26th, 2013 in Hanna, Alberta at the age of 82 years. He will be laid to rest in the Rumsey cemetery beside his wife, Florence. Chris is survived by his oldest sister, Edith of Denmark. His fiancée, Irene Duncan of Big Valley, and by his children: Alex (MaryAnn) Jensen of Rumsey, Doreen (Greg) Mappin of Big Valley, Brian (Myrna) Jensen of Hanna. And his grandchildren: Mattie Jensen; Kyle (Tacy), Cass, Ty Mappin; Doane, Rebekah, Kiersten Jensen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be held October 28, 2013 at the Rumsey hall at 2:00 pm. Donations in memory of Chris can be made to the Alzheimer Society, Bladder Cancer Canada, or the charity of your choice. Condolences may be offered at www.hannafuneralchapel.com.

Special Day in the Classified Announcements

In loving memory of my husband

Don Lindstrom Feb. 1933 - Oct. 19, 2012 Since Heaven has become your home I sometimes feel I’m so alone; and though we now are far apart you hold a big piece of my heart I never knew how much I’d grieve when it was time for you to leave, or just how much my heart would ache from that one fragment you would take. God lets this tender hole remain reminding me we’ll meet again, and one day all the pain will cease when He restores the missing piece. For Jesus heals each tiny part that holds your memory in my heart. Thinking of the many blessings in our years together. Love always Fern

Time to prepare pets for cooler weather It’s a fall ritual to get our homes, cars and even ourselves ready for the colder weather. How many of us, though, consider the impact of the changing season on our pets? Michele Dixon, a health and nutrition specialist with Petcurean, says there are simple things we can do to keep our pets healthy and safe through the fall and winter months. Here are some that top the list: • Cooler weather usually brings dry air, so using a humidifier will help to keep the nose and throat of our dogs and cats from drying out. It’s the

same for their coat and skin. A dog or cat food with omega oils, like Petcurean’s GO! SENSITIVITY + SHINE, will help support a healthy coat and skin. • Choose pet-friendly ice and snow melters that won’t irritate paws

or stomachs, especially if your dog or cat licks its paws after being outside. • Protect your dog’s paws with a wax product designed for this purpose by forming a dense, breathable bond, which helps prevent snow buildup during outdoor exercise. After walks, wipe away any snow or ice from your dog’s feet, legs and belly. • Poor weather and decreased daylight may cause limited visibility for drivers at night, so take extra precautions, including using a leash, when walking your pets. — Metro
