Trustees should serve four years terms, according to elected officials of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board. The present term is three years, but this has been brought up for reconsideration with the recent release of a provincial study on local government election reform. School boards and municipal councils are elected at the same time every three years. The Union of B.C. Municipalities held its annual convention in Vancouver on Sept. 16-20, and decided to support the move to four-year terms. That overturned a 2010 UBCM decision to stay with three-year terms. School board vice-chair Eleanor Palis said the municipal elections for school board and municipal council should still be on the same day. See Trustees, p3

Residents can stay up to two years and, if employed, pay a percentage of their income in rent. For McLellan, who estimates he’s spent almost 20 years on the streets, living in Edmonton,

Kelowna and Maple Ridge, the housing has been invaluable. Toll changes eyed for trucks on PM

The province is thinking of tinkering with trucking tolls on the Port Mann Bridge – so why not the Golden Ears Bridge, as well? Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters likes the idea, providing fare changes are part of a coordinated effort for all of Metro Vancouver. “I don’t have a problem with them lowering tolls, but I think it has to be on all bridges,” Walters said Wednesday. Changing the rates on one bridge will push traffic somewhere else. “Let’s look at the entire region, look at fair tolling and make it fair for all bridges and all truck drivers.” The Ministry of Transportation said last week it’s considering lowering truck tolls to encourage truckers to use the new Port Mann and take pressure off the aging Pattulo Bridge. One tactic could be a monthly pass for truckers, giving them unlimited use of the bridge, for the price of 50 regular trips. Another option is to reduce tolls during late evenings or early mornings, or change vehicle classifications. Large trucks using the Port Mann Bridge now pay $9 for each crossing. The toll for large trucks on the Golden Ears Bridge is $8.95. New Westminster councillors have called for lower Port Mann tolls for trucks for the same reason.

‘More efficient timeline’

Moderate bridge tolls should be considered for the entire region, says Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin. Walters said bridge and road tolls are a frustrating topic for Metro Vancouver mayors. “It’s just an ongoing discussion that we have. You just can’t go and do these things without looking at the entire structure.” Adjusting Golden Ears tolls is worth looking at, but Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin pointed out that TransLink has already tried that in a pilot program. “There wasn’t a lot of uptake on the Golden Ears … I’m not sure

why.” Daykin, though, reiterated, if the bridge was 70 or 80 per cent of capacity shortly after opening, “it was probably under-built.” And moderate bridge tolls should be considered for the entire region, he added. But in return for region-wide bridge tolls, taxpayers should also get a reduced TransLink property tax or reduced gasoline taxes. Max Logan, director of the province’s Transportation Investment

She noted that the present three years has to be considered the minimum term length. Trustee Sarah Nelson said four-year terms would cut the financial impact of elections. And, she said, trustees need time to learn the job before they are at their most effective. “It [a four-year term] is better from a cost perspective, and from a learningcurve perspective,” said Nelson. Trustees Susan Carr and Dave Rempel also spoke in favour of expanding terms to four years. “It’s a more efficient timeline, where you can govern effectively,” said Rempel. Board chair Mike Murray said the time commitment demanded of elected officials is such that a fouryear term would be the maximum he would support. “Any longer, and you may discourage some people from running for election.” The increased term length would not be in effect until after the next election, at the earliest. The deadline for feedback on the white paper is Oct. 23. Trustee Ken Clarkson was to take the board’s viewpoint on the length of terms back to the B.C. School Trustees Association.

An addition was planned to provide more change room space at Pitt Meadows secondary when the new field was built.

Rather than spend more than $100,000 on new change room facilities at Pitt Meadows secondary, staff should find a way to allow community sports teams to access the school change rooms, argued Trustee Ken Clarkson. The entire cost of the project will be borne by the City of Pitt Meadows. Clarkson warned his colleagues the decision brought poor optics – government

spending money on facilities that already exist on the same site could be perceived by taxpayers as waste, he suggested. “We have to change, because there’s only one taxpayer.” He was outvoted by his Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board peers last Wednesday. “I agree with you, but the issue isn’t as black and white as you’ve made out,” responded trustee Dave Rempel. The synthetic field at PMSS was built in 2010. An addition to the school was planned to provide more change room space, but the $300,000 cost would have put the project over budget by

about $150,000. So, $150,000 was put into a reserve to allow time for city staff and community groups to explore sponsorship opportunities. They have not been able to come up with more funding. There have been conflicts with the current situation. Some West Coast Auto Group Football Club games are not permitted to be played at a field where there are no change rooms, under league rules. So, the soccer club is in frequent negotiations to gain access to the school. If there are school teams using the gym, as there often are, they get priority access to the change rooms.

Staff at Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows parks and leisure services received a quote for $75,000 for a portable change room. The proposed building will be a 15-by-3.6 metres prefabricated, stand-alone building. It will provide enough seating for players, as well as a washroom and four showers in each change room. The installation of the portable is estimated to cost $30,000, which will include water, sewer and hydro service connections. School board staff approved placement of a portable beside the field, and it will be shared by the school and the community.

A terrifying trip through time will be the theme of this year’s Ghost Ridge – the annual haunted house to benefit community charities. “Every year it’s different. This year, it’s ‘Timeline of Terror,’” said organizer Lorraine Bates. “It’s a journey from caveman times, through the French Revolution, right to futuristic.” The haunted house is designed and assembled by community volunteers, who mostly err on the side of being scary. “They strive to be gory and gross,” allows Bates. “And they want people to get their money’s worth.” Each year, volunteers get a chance tap their inner George Romero, the zombie movie maestro, and design the district’s premier fright night destination. This Halloween, the Maple Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club, the Invitius Alliance (LARP), the Ridge Meadows Bruins Rugby ladies team and the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Agricultural Association are the four

groups who will assemble and staff Ghost Ridge. It’s a big job. “It takes a good month, and it’s a lot of work,” said Bates. But each organization can expect to garner some $5,000 for their efforts. There are also 61 high school students involved. They have been through auditions, and some have major roles, while others might help with makeup and costumes or food services. “They love it. It’s a

way of getting volunteer hours (needed for school), but they’re also having a lot of fun,” said Bates. The first Ghost Ridge was nine years ago in 2004, and each year it has steadily improved into this year’s spectacle, which will draws thousands of people. Timeline of Terror will be held at the Albion Fairgrounds from Oct. 25 to 30, from 6-9 p.m. each night. On Oct. 30, there will be a fireworks display at 7 p.m.

There will be opportunities to see the Timeline of Terror with the lights on no characters in the sets, for children and the faint of heart. School safe zones School zones should be quiet oases where children can walk safely without fear of being tomorrow’s headline. In fact, school zones during morning drop-off are some of the biggest danger areas, worse than mall parking lots during the Christmas rush. Last week, school authorities, IWALK, Dash B.C., TransLink and ICBC worked on various campaigns to promote more children walking to school during International Walk To School Week. There were free bus tickets to be had, balloons and Popsicles for kids, even prizes for students who made their way to school on their own two feet, bikes or some other wheeled but non-automobile transportation. It was a feel-good exercise, but the fact remains many kids never walk to school, and a campaign like this doesn’t accomplish much. Kids get driven to school every day for a variety of reasons: convenience or lack of time; parents’ fears for their children’s safety; or because their child attends a program of choice outside their catchment area. While it would be nice if more people walked their kids to school or neighbourhood “walking school buses” got kids to school safely, the fact remains cars are still a popular form of transportation and school zones are congested and dangerous. What’s needed is not prizes for kids but more awareness for parents, some of whom take great risks, and put other children at risk, when they drop off their kids. Sometimes, it’s not even the fault of parents that school zones are dangerous but the fact that these zones are poorly planned because they were built when most kids did walk to school. Now, these drop-offs are holding areas for idling SUVs and are an accident waiting to happen, especially when weather is poor, or stressed parents or distracted children don’t understand the dangers. School districts need to address this issue. And let’s hope parents buy in to the idea that they must take some responsibility for the problem and take steps to fix it. – Black Press

‘Social justice’ as student indoctrination VICTORIA – As the B.C. Teachers’ Federation executive moseys back to the bargaining table after a summer off, I’m reminded of former education minister George Abbott’s thoughts on his time trying to establish a civil discussion with the province’s most militant union. B.C. Views Tom Fletcher It started with a lecture. “In my first meeting with the BCTF, and I gather this is characteristic of all first meetings with education ministers, the TF advises that, yes, they are a union, but first and foremost, they are social activists and agents of social change,” Abbott recalled. Their buzzword is “social justice,” which is portrayed by leftists as superior to plain old justice, in ways that are seldom defined. So what exactly are the goals of this “social change”? Here’s some of what I’ve gleaned. Parents may recall the 2008 introduction of an elective high school course called Social Justice 12. This was mainly the result of intense protest by a couple of gay activist teachers, and the ministry curriculum describes its emphasis on inclusion of racial, cultural and sexual differences. That’s all good, and it’s now bolstered by urgently needed anti-bullying and empathy efforts at all grades. Then there is the BCTF version. It’s not just a battle against “racism, homophobia and sexism” but also “poverty and global-

ization.” The BCTF has a quarterly “Social Justice Newsletter” filled with predictable economic assumptions. Readers of the latest issue are reminded at length that the United Nations takes a dim view of Canada’s record on human rights, including a right to housing. Undefined “poverty” statistics are cited, although Statistics Canada has nothing but incomplete relative measures. One article describes a social justice club for Grade 2 and 3 students, with activities that include collecting food bank donations and “writing to the premier, asking for a systemic plan to address child poverty.” Leaving aside whether eight-year-olds can understand what “systemic” means, this rhetoric is taken directly from the tired old NDP policy book. It rests on the cherished myth that poverty is imposed by right-wing governments that refuse to double the minimum wage and pile more taxes on “the rich.” And what about that darned “globalization”? The BCTF still has a 2001 teaching guide on its website, promoting the claim that Nike is uniquely guilty of making shoes and exercise gear in Third World sweatshops. Teachers are to instruct students how to organize a boycott of Nike, thus passing the received wisdom of campus radicalism to the next generation. This was all debunked years ago. Are Adidas, Reebok, Apple and Microsoft any different? Has nothing changed in 12 years? A quick web search will show this is a stale old tale with a convenient villain, to avoid complex questions. A BCTF official assures me this unit is being updated. Once that one is done,

maybe they could check over their teaching unit on Enbridge’s Northern Gateway proposal, another labour of the union’s “social justice” truth team. Entitled “What We Stand To Lose With Pipelines and Supertankers,” it boasts wildlife photos and “key sources” from the left (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives) to the far-left fringe (Pipe Up Network). It is another protesters’ guide designed around a pre-determined viewpoint.

They remind me of George Orwell’s classic novel 1984, where loyal party members are required to focus on selected enemies in a daily ritual called the Two Minutes Hate. Perhaps this is a clue to why our school system produces so many students lacking in employment skills and bursting with demands for government-imposed wealth redistribution.

Why pay for service I wouldn’t use? Editor, The News: Re: Just phone PoCo about garbage (Letters, Oct. 9). As a single-occupant homeowner who makes a trip to the garbage transfer station perhaps once every two months , I find it would be highly unfair to be taxed on a service that I wouldn’t use. I already pay taxes for the school levy when I have no children. There are private companies that provide a collection service. It should not become a municipal issue, and if it does, then homeowners should have the option of opting out. Downtown Ridge getting worse? Editor, The News: Re: Ideas for a vibrant downtown (The News, Oct. 9). It’s Saturday night and I have watched drug deals go on outside my condo three times in the past hour, and have then had people chucking beer bottles out of a third floor apartment across the street. The cops have showed up and told them to stop, without arresting anyone. Why do we have law enforcement when nothing ever gets done when you call them? Why should we have to feel unsafe in our own building because of some junkies that have moved in? The only thing I read about from the mayor is that we don’t have a drug problem here, or a crime problem. I would like to ask the mayor what rock he has been living under? We have had three arsons in a four- block radius and have four abandoned houses in a one-block radius. This is just attracting the wrong crowd. I live across from a building that has a constant infestation of bed bugs with a building manger who won’t help these people. I should not feel un-

safe walking outside at night or even during the day. The truth is I do and won’t now. When we go out for a walk it’s like, ‘let’s see how many needles and condoms we can find on the ground,’ or ‘how many drug deals we are going to pass.’ Something needs to be done soon and people need to be held accountable. Don’t fall back Editor, The News: Re: Ideas for a vibrant downtown (The News, Oct. 9). Our municipality is beaming with a variety of ideas designed to make Maple Ridge’s downtown core a vibrant place. However, putting all eggs in the downtown core makes little sense if the immediate neighborhood has a diametrically opposite character. Ironically, just a block south of the heart of this core area, adjacent streets have been historically plagued and polluted by prostitutes, pimps, drug manufactures, grow-ops, bad

appearances and a bad reputation. I recollect some friends were reluctant to buy property in this area, owing to its bad name and appearances. Several of us felt unsafe to walk after dark along 224th Street and the tunnel at comes out at River Road. Our condo had 34 car break-ins once in a single night. The timely action of the District of Maple Ridge in demolishing and cleaning up of the Northumberland property and old gym, the RCMP raids on at least two other properties and their surveillance, especially along North Avenue, resulted in substantially lower level of criminal and undesirable activities. Then downtown BIA’s efforts to beautify and clean up our neighborhood served to improve the looks. All this served as a preparation for a brighter phase for our neighborhood, which involves several millions of dollars of investments for road upgrading, constructing three new condo buildings and possibly a hotel with a conference centre.

In Maple Ridge, several hundred jobs will be created and new residents will occupy our newly constructed dwellings. But just last week the discovery of a drug house on 224th Street caused serious concern for all the emerging businesses, condo buildings and residents in our neighborhood. This time the commendable actions of our RCMP rounded up eight people and confiscated a variety of drugs and firearms. But we can not afford to let this neighborhood fall back to disrepute and risk several million dollars worth of investment. If an owner’s building has been boarded up twice for active drug manufacturing and or dealing, he should not escape the criminal and legal liability, besides the “no occupancy” order for the building, which should have the same fate as that of the real Northumberland Court. And our civilian force of neighborhood can contribute as the eyes and ears for the RCMP in eradicating these virus cells that were let loose after the drug bust operations. Hari Pal Maple Ridge

Council watch group brings up ‘amalgamation’ Wagner no plans to run for council by Phi l M elnyc h u k staff reporter

Maple Ridge Council Watch’s goal is to discuss municipal issues and keep an eye on council -but its purview stretched to Pitt Meadows this week when the topic of amalgamation was raised. “It’s an interesting subject. I’m absolutely fascinated by what people say,” said Katherine Wagner, who formed the Facebook and Twitter group, which now has 64 members. The current population of Maple Ridge is 77,000. Pitt Meadows has 17,800 residents. Wagner doesn’t consider it a serious proposition, at the moment. “Geographically, what about Mission/Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows forming one municipal-

ity?” There are benefits, Wagner says in a Facebook post. “Of course, there are also drawbacks … and, for many, tradition. Change is never easy, even if it makes sense.” Wagner knows amalgamation now is simply a discussion topic and remembers when she was a school trustee that the topic of joining Maple Ridge and Mission school boards was a touchy issue. That merger never happened. “There was a lot of push back,” she said. “It does seem to me, you would have a lot more clout when you’re in a larger municipality.” While the issue would require lots of information and discussion, Wagner said if both municipalities decided voluntarily to merge, rather than being compelled to do so by the provincial government, they could take their time doing so and phase in the unification process.

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows currently share education, recreation and police services. Initially, Pitt Meadows was part of Maple Ridge, when Maple Ridge was founded in 1874. However, local residents campaigned to have their own municipal identity, and in 1914 Pitt Meadows was formed. Pitt Meadows became a city in 2007 after applying to Victoria to change its status. Wagner said amalgamation was a topic 20 years ago when she arrived in the area. “It always kind of bubbles under the surface.” If a merge ever happened, the larger city like could move to a ward system, in which councillors represented particular areas of a city. If Maple Ridge wanted to merge, could it persuade Pitt Meadows it’s in its best interest to do so? Bing said Pitt Meadows

shelter facilities, while one person was listed as having no fixed address. The municipalities were the only place in Metro Vancouver where the number of street homeless also rose – to 61 from 40. People who work with the homeless locally hope places such as Alouette Heights make a difference when the count is conducted again next year and, perhaps, contribute to a drop in the homeless population. On Tuesday, the Caring Place hosted a health fair to kick off Homelessness Action Week, providing a onestop shop where people could get a flu shot, their pressure checked, a mammogram or learn more about local services from literacy to the seniors network. Nurse practitioner Janet Rosenfeld, who is stationed at the Sally Ann three days a week, knows how important something as simple as a blood sugar or pressure test can be to detecting a more serious problem. Since she started working at the Caring

Place in May, Rosenfeld has been focused on developing a relationship with the people who come to see her. “It’s all about building trust,” she said. As a nurse practitioner, Rosenfeld can diagnose health problems, write prescriptions, order laboratory test and refer patients to specialists. “In the past, these people would show up at the emergency room to get treatment,” says Rosenfeld. In addition to helping clients keep appointments and stay healthy, Rosenfeld spends a lot of time just listening. “Most people just need somebody to care about them, somebody to acknowledge them and to validate what they are going through,” she said.

The passenger list of the Hero shows the names of Ole Lee Sr. (49) and his sons, Axel (21) and Ole Jr. (19). Also listed are the names of John Christian Nelson (40) and his wife, Anna (36), who travelled with their children, the youngest just three month of age. From Quebec, the group travelled to Victoria, where they arrived two weeks later. After a couple of days, the Norwegian fishermen–farmers and their families were taken to Valdes Island on board the half-a-century-old

Hudson’s Bay steamer Beaver, then used as a tugboat. On Valdes Island, land had been reserved for them. But for unknown reasons, they did not stay there but moved on to Howe Sound. In July 1887, the group was reportedly settling well on the shores of the Squamish River. They had started to “improve” the land and were building houses. The salmon runs, still in their glory days, must have impressed them. The Colonist mentions friction between the Norwegians and the Squamish Nation. The Norwegians were apparently trespass-

ing and cutting trees on the reserve. These problems were to be resolved by surveying land for the Norwegians. However, by the time a surveyor arrived in November, the land where the Norwegians lived was several feet under water. Their houses were all flooded and it had been impossible for them to cook food for themselves and the children. Reportedly, they found fish in the nets hanging out in the yard. The surveyor alerted the authorities in New Westminster, and soon a tugboat and a scow were on their way to Squamish with provisions and other supplies for relief and to evacuate the Norwegians. Fortunately, they were all safe and the water level had gone down, but they were determined not to stay in Squamish. They – 18 persons – were taken to New Westminster and “comfortably housed in the Immigration Sheds” to stay there until a new location for settlement would be decided on. Eventually John Christian Nelson and his family settled in Whonnock on 160 acres at the southeast corner of 272nd Street and 112th Avenue. Ole Lee and his two sons opted not to acquire land at this point and for the next three years led ambulant lives fishing between the Skeena River and the Queen Charlotte Islands, where his sons would continue fishing in later years. In 1891, Ole Lee went back to Norway to witness the wedding of his oldest daughter, Martha Marie Lee, with Ole Nelson. The couple immediately emigrated to Whonnock, where the groom’s brother, John Christian, was dying. During the following year, Ole Lee returned with the rest of his family and settled in Whonnock for good. Fred Braches is a local historian who lives in Whonnock.

esourceful, determined, and tremendously loyal, they made the very best of settlers.” That is how Whonnock’s Norwegians are described in Maple Ridge, a History of Settlement. At the core of that important group of settlers were the Lee and Nelson families, originating from Trondheim and related through marriage. The first members of these Norwegians started settling in Whonnock in the late 1880s. Eric Andersen is interested in the histories of Norwegians in the Squamish area. Based on information from the Sessional Papers of the Government of Canada of 1888 and news items in Victoria’s Daily Colonist of 1887, he suggested that the Lees and Nelsons had made a short stop at Squamish before landing in Whonnock. That had been rumoured before, but Eric was the first to find written evidence of that stay in Squamish. Linda Mattis, greatgranddaughter of patriarch Ole Lee, established that they had left Norway for Hull on May 4, 1887, onboard the ship Hero. From Hull, they took the train to Liverpool and, as a note in the Daily Colonist tells us, on May 14, this group of about 20 men, women

For Kelly Nagy, every dime will count towards a cure. The Maple Ridge mom has been busy sewing bibs in preparation for the inaugural Walk, Run and Roll’n for Rett. “It’s all about raising awareness,” says Nagy, whose daughter Brianne suffers from a rare neurological disorder called Rett Syndrome. Named for the doctor who discovered it, Rett Syndrome is a development disorder that begins to show its effects in infancy or early childhood. It’s almost exclusively

found in females and causes problems in brain function that can affect learning, speech, sensory sensations, mood, movement, breathing, cardiac function, and even chewing, swallowing, and digestion. Nagy’s daughter is confined to a wheelchair and suffers from seizures that come without warning. Nagy and her husband Bill are familiar with the struggle families dealing with Rett Syndrome go through. Their daughter needs round-the-clock care and they’ve had to fight hard to get the province to help. The experience prompted the Nagys to start the Rett Syndrome

Society of B.C. in March, an organization that’s currently comprised of 50 families. “All the money we raise goes to research and helping families,” she says. “We are hoping to find a cure.” The family hopes to turn the run into an annual event, held in conjunction with Rett Syndrome Awareness Month, which takes place in October. • Walk, Run and Roll’n for Rett takes place Sunday. hen Katie’s Place first opened its doors about 12 years ago, we were an annex shelter for another rescue. We wanted to help out with the huge number of cats looking for homes, and provide a more central location for potential adopters. When the shelter was first finished, the cofounder and I sat in the “Main Pen” with our two resident cats and said, “we really need more cats.” That was the last time those words would be spoken. Over the years, Katie’s Place began to focus on the most needy cats in the community. We started to take in cats with medical and behavioural issues that required extra work and financial support. In time, we became the shelter that other rescues could turn to with cats that were hard to place. Slowly but surely, Katie’s Place became a shelter for last chance animals. Today we have senior cats, cats who require medical care, cats who are aggressive, or have litter box issues, cats that are extremely shy and cats that would most likely not have a chance anywhere else. We open our doors to cats from other shelters, to street cats with nowhere else to turn, and cats who will need months, if not years, of rehabilitation. Because of our devotion to these types of animals, our veterinary bills and our level of commitment are high. We have a dedicated group of TLC volunteers who spend hours with the cats, coaxing them to eat, gaining their trust, monitoring their health. There are numerous volunteers who come in the morning and evening to administer medical attention to the many cats who require it on a regular basis. There are close to 100 volunteers who come to clean all the pens and check on the cats in those pens. Then there are the fundraisers, the drivers, the trappers, the people who deal with all the administrative issues, and the people who spend time with the cats to give them the love and attention they desperately need. Not a single person at our shelter is paid. Yet we all feel rewarded many times over by the animals who thrive in our care. The cats that represent Katie’s Place and all that we stand for are cats like Tony –a FIVpositive (similar to human HIV) boy who was afraid and shy when he first arrived. Tony will never get better physically, but he’s now a happy outgoing boy who runs to greet us at the door. He needs regular veterinary care, and needs to be watched closely to make sure he’s comfortable.

Then there is Stitch – a beautiful girl who was hit by a car, had her tail amputated, suffered nerve damage, and is often incontinent. She requires medication twice a day for the rest of her life and she needs to be monitored closely to make sure her bladder is emptied properly. Stitch is a love bug and we will gladly offer her a home for as long as she needs it. She’s friendly and loving and we try to spoil her as much as possible. We have cats like Crockett, who is extremely shy, and Rosie, who refuses to use the litter box. We have Bourbon, who is ancient, and Ferdinand, who is a diabetic. Then there is Shane, who is missing an eye, Marty, who has to mark every surface he comes in contact with, and Hank who’s handsome but cannot be trusted. Bottom line is that if you are looking for a perfect cat at Katie’s Place, you may have a hard time finding one if your definition of perfect is young, healthy, and completely well adjusted. If you see perfection like we do, and that is a life worthy of living despite the imperfections, then this is your place. We believe every animal should be given a chance and will do everything we can to find them the perfect home. Our adopters are as special as our volunteers. Featuring raw monologues, the play offers a realistic look at the lives of these often marginalized women. Karas’ character is a Polish immigrant – a feature dancer – who is alienated and bullied by the other strippers at the club. Transforming into Pink Champagne has centred Karas. Though daunting, it’s a role she wants to honour. “She’s probably one of the strongest characters in the play,” says Karas. “She had to make a really hard choice in life. All she truly wants is to be accepted.” Karas can relate to Pink Champagne’s drive to be a feature dancer – a star. “It takes a lot of responsibility and hard work to get yourself to that status. It wasn’t just given to her. It’s not far from how I am,” she explains. “I think the other girls don’t understand that she is where she is because she’s worked hard for it.” To prepare for the role, Karas got Polish women to read the script, tweaked her accent to turn the “k’s” to “g’s” and had learned to accept her body, flaws and all. “I believe my whole life has been building up to this part,” says Karas, from Port Coquitlam. “This play forces you to accept yourself 100 per cent. Once you give yourself permission to use your humanity and your meat-suit to tell a real, truthful story, it’s magical.” Maple Ridge actress Lauren Campbell knows exactly what Karas is talking about. Campbell first got acquainted with her character Luv when she was cast in an Emerald Pig production of the play. That production won accolades last year at Mainstage, B.C.’s provincial theatre festival. Campbell, however, wasn’t ready to give up Luv.

s her colleagues strike poses under a spotlight on stage, Flora Karas twirls just beyond the curtain. Decked out in a white and gold bustier, Karas sparkles. Her tail feathers fall in a cascade as she shakes her bottom, seemingly oblivious to theatre technicians around her at The Columbia in New Westminster. Much like her character, the spunky bombshell who plays Pink Champagne in NeverYouMind Productions’ presentation of A Particular Class of Women needs to float into her own world at times. “People don’t know if Pink Champagne is in reality or not and I think a lot of people look at me like that. They think Flora lives in her own world. Trust me, it’s way better in Floraland,” Karas says with a cheeky grin. Written by Janet Feindel, who spent 10 years as a stripper, A Particular Class of Women is a revealing composite of life in the skin trade. It was inspired by a 1985 court case in Ontario, where a stripper was raped at knife-point. The presiding judge paid little attention to the crime because the victim “was from a particular class of women whose profession it is to promote lust.”

“It’s such an important story to tell. I want as many people to hear about it as possible,” she says. In February, after a few words of encouragement from Bard on the Beach’s Christopher Gaze, Campbell decided to start her own production company, signing up two cohorts – Karas and Lisa Marie Marrelli, who are also part of the production. A year of playing Luv, the sexy Southern belle, has allowed Campbell to grow more comfortable with the role. “Every time I play her, rehearse or read over my monologue, I learn something new about her or myself,” she says. This time round, reincarnated Luv is not just angry, she’s more nuanced. “I realized she loves soap operas. She is very different this time around. It’s exciting to find these discoveries,” says Campbell. “I’ve learned so much about her as a woman and an artist. I have so much love for her.”

NeverYouMind Productions draws its name from Blueberry Girl, a book and poem by Neil Gaiman, a tale of empowerment Lisa Marie Marrelli often reads to her twin daughters. It’s perfect for the company whose goal is to create theatre that feeds the soul. “Our mandate is to create theatre that’s enlivening, that gets people thinking and feeling and believing in theatre again,” she says. As the director Marrelli has had to acquaint herself with all the characters in A Particular Class of Women. Rather than stifle, it’s allowed her to understand her character Angel, the exotic club clown who is hiding a dark secret. “It feels like she always lives inside of me,” says Marrelli. Each dancer embodies something the audience can relate to and that makes the play special for Marrelli. Just like the dancers who let loose in their dressing room, Marrelli has designated the stage as a safe space. “It’s about empowering women putting them in a place of being in control,” she says. “Yeah, some of these women are abused but they are up on stage and no one can harm them and no one can touch them.
