Communication between municipal affairs and Rimoka Housing about a multi million dollar aging in place facility for Rimbey is continuing, and a revised proposal is soon to be reviewed. Kathleen Range, Press Secretary to Municipal Affairs Minister, Doug Griffiths, said the proposal, which first went before the government in 2011, has not been discarded, although the government wants additional information. She said a senior’s lodge for Rimbey is a priority, but there are issues which need to be addressed before a final decision will be made. “What they will be doing with the existing facility (needs to be clarified),” she said. “We are expecting a revised proposal.” Denis Beesley, president of Bethany Group, the CAO of Rimoka Housing said he is hoping to meet with the Ministry soon. “We have come up with a revised proposal. It’s still pretty broad-brush. Beesley said the revised proposal suggests renovating a portion of the existing facility for seniors’ use as well as build a new facility that would accommodate those in need of an aging in place facility. “We are trying to make the best use of the assets we already have as well as create more space,” he said. Chairman of Rimoka Housing Authority Paul McLauchlin said the existing lodge located in the town is
owned by the province. Earlier this year, Ponoka County Council, agreed to purchase 8.5 acres of land in Johnson’s Estates located northwest of the Rimbey Community Centre to be used for an aging in place facility. The title of the land will remain in the county’s name until approval for the senior’s housing project is obtained from the province. The town has agreed to pay approximately $170,000 for the cost of installing the water and sewer lines from the nearest main to the property. Earlier Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson said he is pleased the town is working with Rimoka and the county to move the project forward. “I’m encouraged by the partnership within the town, the county and Rimoka. I believe this greatly increases the chances of having a new senior’s facility in Rimbey.” Rimbey’s accommodations for seniors now include Parkland Manor and Kansas Ridge 1 and 11. Parkland Manor has 63 rooms. Kansas Ridge 1 has 16 one-bedroom living accommodations and Kansas Ridge 11 has 20 units. Parkland Manor, the oldest building, has narrow hallways, there is no fire suppressant system and the kitchen is small. The roof which has leaked in the past has been repaired, but constant upgrades are needed.

FCC donates towards new Bentley fire hall By June Norvila The fund to help pay for the new Bentley & District fire hall just got a big boost. On October 8, representatives from the Red Deer district Farm Credit Canada (FCC) office presented a cheque for $20,000 to the town of Bentley from the Farm Credit Canada FCC AgriSpirit Fund. Annually for the last ten years FCC has donated between $5,000 and $25,000 towards numerous capital projects in rural communities across Canada where the population is less than 150,000 from their AgriSpirit Fund. Mayor Dickau sincerely thanked the FCC representatives. This year funding to help 93 projects out of 866 applications from across Canada were approved, with about 14 projects in Alberta. “We have a softness for fire halls,” said FCC District Director
Matt Olson, who explained the selection committee felt this to be a very good project. Town CAO Elizabeth Smart had applied just a few months earlier. The $1.8 million joint project between the town of Bentley and Lacombe County held a sod turning in early July. “We will have it (the town’s share) paid off by 2016, and with no rise in taxes,” noted a smiling Mayor Dickau. The 7,680 square-foot building on 5 acres of land should serve the area for 35-50 years and was designed to provide for easy future expansion explained Dickau. Timcon Construction Limited from Red Deer was awarded the construction contract. It is hoped the building will be completed in early 2014 with landscaping left until spring. The building is being enclosed now.
BRIX property rezoned By Treena Mielke A Rimbey businessman got the green light from council to revise an area structure plan and have the first phase of his property rezoned to highway commercial. In a 3-2 vote, council, at its regular meeting Oct. 7 gave third reading to a bylaw to reclassify the rezoning of Phase 1 of the BRIX area structure plan from country residential. Councillors Gayle Rondeel and Paul Payson voted against the motion as commercial development could involve more industrial traffic. “Rondeel wanted to postpone third reading until more information was obtained from Tagish Engineering. “Setting it back a month and a half means it could be done right. I’m not concerned about traffic, I’m concerned about danger.” Councillor Payson agreed. “Doing a hairpin road with a big rig is not fun.” Steffan Olsen, owner and developer of the parcel located in the southwest corner of said the area is designated for industrial and commercial use in the municipal development plan. He said after discussions with administration, he decided the parcels should be zoned commercial and not country residential and noted that interest has
been shown for small commercial use. Darren and Karen Fischer, who are adjacent landowners were opposed to the rezoning due to concerns such as highway access, vehicle traffic, setbacks, speeding and the condition of Simpson Road. Another adjacent landowner, Jim Anderson was opposed due to the condition of the road, traffic volumes and dust. Olsen’s plan includes the development of approximately 61 acres of land. Development is to take place in three stages with the first phase to include six two-acre residential lots. Phases two and three are to include commercial and industrial development. Although the rezoning was approved, council voted unamiously in favor of a motion by Coun. Rondeel to have Tagish Engineering do an assessment of the access of 40 Street and Highway 53.

Thanksgiving joys then and now The air smelled clean, like fresh laundry that got caught outside playing in the wind. The leaves were a delightful tangle of gold and tangerine, and the sky was a clear, crisp blue. Thanksgiving Day. It had arrived on the heels of a long, hot summer and, no doubt, stopped for a moment at winter’s doorstep. I allowed myself the quick luxury of drinking in the scene outside my dining room window, before smoothing down my apron, the pretty blue one decorated with yellow daisies, and tucking a stray stand of misbehaving hair behind my ear. I was ready. Almost. Queen of the kitchen. That would be me. Wonderbar! I silently congratulated myself, mentally checking off my ‘to do’ list. Table set. Best china. Matching linens. Spotless wine glasses. Real leaves, pressed and strategically placed among the best china, matching linen and spotless wine glasses. Four pies; two pumpkin, one lemon and one apple rest on the counter. I open the oven to check on the turkey and my senses are immediately assaulted with a smell so heavenly it could have came straight out of my dogeared Better Homes and Garden cookbook, if the recipes had such a scent. As a finishing touch, I set the C-D player with some relaxing background dinner music, turn down the volume a touch and light the tall pale gold candles. Right on Que, the doorbell rings. My guests have arrived. It was such a dinner party. So much fun. We ate. We drank. We laughed. And, then we did it all again because it was so much fun the first time.. And, somewhere in between the mashed potatoes and the pie and the coffee, we reminisced. “Remember, mom, remember when you didn’t know how to actually cook and Aunt Shirley came and you guys got to talking and you completely forgot about the

Treena Mielke On The Other Side turkey.” “Remember when Uncle Bruce came and got so drunk and kept wanting you to sing with him and so you did, finally, and the carrots burned and when you threw them in the sink it got all plugged up and you tried to get a plumber, but you couldn’t because it was Thanksgiving.” I take a sip of wine and a slow smile plays across my lips. “I remember,” I say, planting a kiss on the silky head of my youngest grandchild. “I remember it well.” And I do. And if my memory fails to serve me correctly, I have a picture to prove it happened.. There were 32 of us in that picture. And I had them all for Thanksgiving dinner. There, among a backdrop of tangled gold and tangerine leaves, they all are. The aunts, the uncles, the brothers, the sisters, the kids. And me. Queen of the house. I was in my 20s at that time, an age when all things seem possible. For me, it was also an age when hospitality and optimism had a tendency to overrule common sense. “Come,” I told them all. “Come,” It will be good.” I had, of course, no idea if it would be good. No idea how much food that many people ate. No idea what I was in for. But, I certainly found out. I remember being so happy to see my sister whom I hadn’t seen for a very long time. And, it is true that that happiness spilled over into a conversation where time stood still and I forgot all about the turkey.
And, I remember my somewhat inebriated brother wanting to sing with me because that’s what we did when we got together. We sang. Of course, with all the singing and talking, the meal I produced left much to be desired. The turkey was overdone and dry. The gravy was lumpy. And the carrots, burned beyond recognition, were not worth mentioning. We did have lots of bread, however, because my brother, the bread man, happened to have extra loaves in his truck. I take another sip of wine and try to remember dessert. I can’t, so maybe it didn’t happen. But, what I do remember, however, in the midst of all the chaos and turmoil and imperfection, hovering about kind of like the dust particles that get caught in the rays of sunshine that filter in through unsuspecting cracks and windows, is an indescribable feeling of something. What is it? I put my wine down, pat my mouth with a snowy white napkin and gently ask for everyone’s attention. “Because it is Thanksgiving I would
like everyone to take a turn and tell us what they are thankful for,” I say. They pause, and I know they are thinking, “there goes grandma again, with her thankful, grateful list. Geez, why do we always have to do this? But, even though they are somewhat embarrassed and a little shy about saying such things out loud, they oblige. Good food. Being together. Family and friends. A new baby on the way. A job promotion. The list goes on. Finally its my turn. I look around at their dear faces reflected in the candlelight’s glow and I smile. “I am grateful that one Thanksgiving a long time ago, 32 people gathered at my house even though it was no bigger than a minute and one of them wanted to sing with me and one of them wanted to have a conversation with me and when I did, time stood still. And I’m grateful that happiness doesn’t lie in Suzy homemaker meals and matched linens. And I’m thankful that I have figured out what the feeling was that hung around on that long ago Thanksgiving when I burned the carrots and forgot about the turkey. It was joy!

On Sept. 30 principal Alva Holiday, social / physical education teacher Dave Robertson, some classmates and myself, all from West Country Outreach school left Rimbey to enjoy a beautiful three day trip to Frontier lodge, just outside of Nordegg. During our stay we participated in canoeing, rappelling, hiking and an activity called “the traverse”. Early Tuesday morning everyone got packed up and ready to have a full day of excitement and fear facing. Travelling thirty minutes west of the lodge in a very tightly packed van, with thirteen of us huddled together was a small sacrifice we all had to pay, to reach our destination. We were all very happy to get out and stretch our legs. Once we were out of the van we took a 15 minute hike to the cliff where we planned to traverse. When my classmates and I showed up, it caught me and I think a couple others off guard. It wasn’t at all what I expected.

Grabbing hold of the cable again, I started pulling myself to the other side of the cliff, not thinking of the “what if’s”. I reached the other side, let off a little joyful scream and zipped back to my classmates and teachers. The whole experience made me think that not only did I have to get over fear, pull myself, and have trust in something for that one activity, but I should have those positive problem solving thoughts with me everyday. Teens should put those three things to good use -- pull yourself up, face your fears, trust others and yourself and know you can handle many issues with ease.

RCMP busy keeping law and order here This past week the Rimbey RCMP had 39 calls for service. The files included, collisions, missing people, impaired driver and warrant executions. Missing person found A member of the Rimbey RCMP detachment along with a police dog and handler located a male who had been reported missing from Rocky Mountain House. The missing male has since been reunited with his family. Residents use lawn as toilet Rimbey RCMP officers sometimes think of their jobs as being somewhat glamorous. However, once in a while a file is received that brings them back down to earth. Rimbey RCMP responded to a complaint in town of people using the lawn as a toilet. Evidently, the residents were having issues with their plumbing, and opted to take their “number 1 and number 2 business outside”. A charge under the municipal bylaws is pending. Mounty on lookout for one more impaired driver In separate incidents this week a 30 year-old and a 42 year-old male, both residents of Rimbey, are facing driving prohibitions as both males were caught driving over the legal limit. Impaired driving continues to be a concern in our community. If you suspect someone is an impaired driver please contact the RCMP immediately. One member of the Rimbey RCMP to date has charged 99 people with Impaired driving. He is actively looking for number 100. Please don’t give him the satisfaction. Don’t drink and drive. Former Rimbey resident charged A 34-year-old male, a former resident of Rimbey, was stopped for a traffic violation, the male pretended to be from Newfoundland and even put on a fake accent to go along with the fake name he provided. Fortunately, the officer dealing with him was from the east coast and made the
male for an imposter right away. The male was found to have several outstanding warrants, and now has new criminal charges to boot. He is working on his accent in the Red Deer Remand Center. In another incident an intoxicated male thought it would be a good idea to relieve himself in front of the RCMP detachment with two members in the parking lot, he was found to have $3300.00 in outstanding fines. Seeming as how he literally didn’t have a pot to pee in, he was transported to the remand center to pay off his debt with jail time. Resident charged with failing to comply Rimbey RCMP often conduct compliance checks on people in the community who are under court imposed conditions. One of these checks resulted in a 45 year old Rimbey resident being charged with two counts of failing to comply with his probation, stemming from a domestic assault conviction. The male had consumed both alcohol and illegal drugs. If you have any information regarding this or any other crimes, please call the local Rimbey RCMP Detachment at (403) 843-2224 or Crime Stoppers: PHONE: 1-800-222-8477, #8477 on Telus Mobility, *8477 on Rogers AT&T Crime Stoppers is a community program that does work! Book sale helps alleviate space crunch By Treena Mielke The Rimbey library, home to thousands of books, has had to let some go recently because of limited shelf space. Rimbey librarian Jean Keetch said the semi annual book sale has been ongoing for several years, but this is the first time the books have had to be sold because of limited space. “We simply do not have enough space on our shelves anymore,” she said. “There is no room.” Usually books are weeded out according to circulation, relevance and dated information. However this year fiction books such as those written by popular romance author Danielle Steele had to be removed. Keetch said the book sale is popular with the public being encouraged to take as many books as they can carry and donate as much as they would like to. The library, which is crowded with books, patrons and staff, continues to be a busy place. Young and old alike are enjoying such activities as

movie nights which are held the first Thursday of every month, thanks to the generous donation of Conoco Phillips. Keetch said the movie night in August CALLfeaturing ‘The Croods’ attracted 128 people. “It was our largest crowd ever,” she said. An adult movie was held in September during which wine and beer were sold. Keetch said all legal requirements are followed including obtaining a liquor license for events at which alcoholic beverages are served. Having events such as movie nights is a way to encourage literacy, she said. “We do it because it’s community building and the need is there. If we have 128 people in our library to watch a movie that means they are not in Sylvan Lake or in Red Deer to watch a movie. And they are in our library. It is a way of getting people to feel comfortable in the library.” Call 403-783-3311 She said she understands not everyone to submitwants photos, to attend events where alcohol is being letters served. to the “We can’t be everything to everybody.editor We or have lots of events where there is no alcohol, advertise. as well.” The library board’s proposal to expand into the town office which would relocate to the Provincial building was squashed by a public vote earlier this summer. Since that time the library board has continued to look at other locations. “We have some good ideas, but we will wait until after the election before moving ahead,” said Keetch.

Turkey shoot attracts young and old By Treena Mielke A turkey shoot held at the Blindman Valley Gun Club’s range had all the old fashioned elements of family fun and friendly competition. The turkey shoot, sponsored by the Rimbey Fish and Game Association and the Blindman Valley Gun Club, attracted a good mix of young and old competitors. “We were up by about 12 competitors and we had two more divisions for younger people,” said Allan Muddle from Rimbey Fish and Game. “We were all happy about that.” As well as the regular shooting competition, this year the turkey shoot included novelty classes such as shooting at a weighted string causing the string to swing. And, in this competition, as well as in the other ones, a good time was had by all. Four-year-old Morgan Gillespie, the youngest competitor in the turkey shoot, won himself a turkey

Wolf Creek Public Schools Celebrated World Teachers’ Day Teachers in Alberta and across Canada joined more than 30 million of their colleagues around the globe marking World Teachers’ Day on October 5. This year’s slogan is ‘A Call for Teachers’, which UNESCO is celebrating along with its partners, the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNDP, UNICEF and Education International (EI). “This World Teachers’ Day, we call for teachers to receive stronger training upfront and continual professional development and support… Since teachers are the most powerful force for equity, access and quality education, a call for teachers means calling for quality education for all. Quality education offers hope and the promise of a better standard of living. There is no stronger foundation for lasting peace and sustainable development than a quality education provided by well trained, valued, supported and motivated teachers. World Teachers’ Day is held annually on October 5 to praise the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels. Celebrated since 1994 across the globe, it is an opportunity to honor the teaching profession and support teachers in their efforts to empower people to build a better world. This year, to mark World Teachers’ Day, Wolf Creek Public Schools selected Kathleen Galloway to be featured as one of many outstanding teachers in the school division. Galloway was asked to share various aspects of her career in education, her views on the teaching profession and how she believes teaching impacts the citizens of the future. Galloway has been a teacher for just over 25 years. She started her career with Red Deer Public Schools prior to coming to work for Wolf Creek Public Schools. During that time she took a year’s absence to accompany her husband on a teaching exchange position in Australia for one year. She also took a few breaks to be home with her children. Galloway holds a Bachelor of Education from Red Deer College/ University of Calgary and has her Masters Degree (in French) from the Campus (Faculté) St Jean, University of Alberta. She was an integral part of the Wolf Creek AISI (Alberta Initiative for School Improvement) team acting as lead for her school before taking on the role of Assistant Principal at École Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School in September of 2008. Galloway is actively
involved in the French Immersion program at ESLCHS teaching Social and French; and loves the opportunity to interact with young people and to be able to facilitate their interaction with each other as they learn. So when asked why she decided to become a teacher, she did not hesitate to answer; “I have always been drawn to people, so the social and humanitarian aspect of the profession was really appealing. Sharing a passion for my chosen subject areas
was/is very enjoyable, and the opportunity to influence the learners in my care, both through our studies and through valuing each other as people makes this a great way to spend a career!” Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Larry Jacobs, believes that Wolf Creek Public Schools is fortunate to have Galloway working in our division. “Kathleen epitomizes the teacher as a lifelong learner and works tirelessly with students, other teachers and the school
community to ensure they have every opportunity to pursue that same goal of lifelong learning.” “I love to see students learn with and from each other, and I am always learning from everyone around me,” commented Mrs. Galloway. Although she is passionate about engaging students in their own environment, her hopes for the future are, that all children, world-wide, will have opportunities for a high quality education. One of her favorite quotes is by
Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” She believes that as educators, teachers are entrusted by parents, guardians and society to help students understand the world in which they live, and the role(s) they have within that world; and by following this practice teachers can encourage students to be lifelong learners and to fulfill their many roles to the best of their abilities – but to never forget to enjoy
a comfortable and positive quality of life. “I hope that education will assist students in attaining skills and knowledge for success in a positive and peaceful adult life; and that they will be challenged to be creative and critical thinkers,” said Galloway. “I am married to an outstanding educator,” said Galloway. Her husband Brent is Chairperson of Education Department at Red Deer College. They have three grown children;
all graduates of ESLCHS, French Immersion and all are pursuing their interests and passions as young adults. Their love of travel and education has opened many opportunities; most recently was this past summer with a team from ‘A Better World’, offering Teacher Professional Development in Kenya. Galloway is a member of the Flat Iron Jazz Band from Lacombe; and she loves camping, reading, kayaking, skiing, photography and music.

Roland Grutterink, am running for Division 4 Councillor in the County of Ponoka. If elected I will endeavor to represent the needs of Division 4 and the County as a whole to the best of my ability. If any resident has concerns or issues I will try to be of assistance but be assured I will return calls made to me. I am 49 years of age and with my wife Irene we run a 175 head cow/calf operation south of Rimbey. We have 4 children Selena, Rico, Aya, Dustin and his Wife Kerie with Grandson Beau. Besides operating my farm, I delivered fuel to many of the farmers in this area (1988-2005). Then in 1999, I was elected as a UFA delegate to represent the members in west-central Alberta until present. I have enjoyed being part of a large co-operative, where team work and cooperation are an important part of success. I believe as a steward of the land, we have a sacred trust to farm in a sustainable manner to insure its future promise of providing food to a growing population. At the same time supporting local business and resource based industry, in an environmentally safe way. This is a great community to raise a family. We also need to provide facilities that treat our elderly with care and respect. It would be a great honor and privilege to serve the residents of Division 4 in the County of Ponoka. Elementary students learn positive and healthy habits to practice daily By Treena Mielke Students at Rimbey Elementary School are being given tools to help them not only through elementary school, but also through the many challenges they will face as they grow to adulthood. The program, The Leader in Me, designed to be integrated into a school’s curriculum and every day language, helps teach students the skills and self-confidence they will need to succeed as leaders in the 21st century. September 20, Steve Harmer, a former principal and currently a motivational magician, did a presentation on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Kids, based upon the work of Stephen Covey. The presentation kicked off RES’s focus on Covey’s 7 Habits.
Principal Jodi Bramfield said the students enjoy the program. “We focus on different habit each month and the concepts are then reinforced by the classroom teachers throughout the month. At our monthly recognition rally we celebrate students who have demonstrated these habits. It encourages them to be the best person they can be.” “The Leader in Me process also helps to create a common language within aschool, built on proven principle-based leadership skills found in Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” said assistant principal Kathleen Terry. In October the students are working on Habit 1: Be Proactive/You’re in charge of you.
Oilers favored: Principal Jodi Bramfield stands behind Rimbey elementary Grade 1 students Kagen Wright, Tavish Beagle, Reed Tousaint, Drew Service, Bella Heilemann and Theo Seber last Wednesday which was hat and jersey day at the school. It appears the Oilers are the team of choice for the students, but not their principal. Treena Mielke Photo

Bluffton-area woman contacted Lyme disease from tick By Susan Zielinski Red Deer Advocate A Bluffton-area woman says she contracted Lyme disease from a tick that provincial health officials refuse to believe is infecting Albertans within the borders of this province. Carmen Werenka, 27, says she was bit by a tick in the backyard of her acreage three years ago. “All of a sudden I had this round rash. I didn’t think anything of it because I didn’t get sick right away. I just had this round rash on my leg. It was a few weeks after that that I got sick,” said Werenka, who says her disease has progressed to become chronic Lyme disease. Antibiotics should be administered promptly to halt the disease but Werenka said nobody in Alberta would treat her. “The rash I had was dismissed as something else. I was told we don’t have it here so they didn’t want to run the test. I was just getting shuffled to different doctors.” Her mother, a nurse in British Columbia, suspected it was Lyme disease and her family took her to San Diego, Calif., for testing and treatment with intravenous antibiotics for the first year and a half until they ran out of money. Her family spent $80,000 for treatment, buying drugs in the U.S. and administering them back home. Werenka said eventually an infectious disease doctor in Red Deer acknowledged her disease and five months ago she finished three months of intravenous antibiotics.
“I was 90 per cent better. I was myself. I was able to go back to work. I wasn’t in pain. I wasn’t taking any medication for symptom control — nothing.” But within a couple of months, her symptoms returned — joint pain, swelling joints, head pressure, balance problems, searing foot pain. She is now on disability, unable to return to work as a bookkeeper. “It’s discouraging for me. I go on antibiotics and I get better. They stop the antibiotics. Within a couple months, I start to get sick again. Infectious Disease in Red Deer says I’m not allowed to get any more antibiotics.” Werenka may be returning to the U.S. for more treatment. Her mother, Judy Mason, said the physical, emotional and financial toll on her daughter has been tremendous. She said trying to get treatment for Werenka was impossible in the beginning. They had to pay out of pocket for everything. Mason said she was so happy when the treatment in Red Deer was working. But now her daughter is in so much pain again that she can hardly walk. “Now that they stopped the IV, she’s back to square one,” said Mason from Fort. St. John, B.C. “It’s sad. I just wish I could make her better.” Werenka said she has complained all the way up to Alberta Health Minister Fred Horne seeking answers and reimbursement for the U.S. treatment but has received neither. “Nobody ever puts warnings out about Lyme disease. You don’t see bulletins from Alberta Health Services in the newspaper like you do for West Nile
when people that get Lyme disease get way sicker than people who get West Nile and it’s so hard to treat,” Werenka said. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, most cases of Lyme disease can be cured with a twoto-four-week treatment of antibiotics. People with certain neurological or cardiac problems may require intravenous treatment. Patients diagnosed in the later stages of the disease can have persistent or recurrent symptoms requiring up to eight weeks maximum of antibiotic treatment. Alberta Health Services says since 1998, a total of 38 Albertans have been diagnosed with Lyme disease, including six so far in 2013. “All of these cases also have a travel history to an area outside the province where Lyme disease is known to circulate. At this point, all of our cases are travel related and are not acquired in Alberta,” said Dr. Martin Lavoie, the province’s deputy chief medical officer. The province has been testing ticks found on pets and farm animals for the bacteria that causes Lyme disease since 2007 to track the disease.
This year, 20 ticks from animals tested positive for Lyme bacteria — 12 ticks in the Edmonton area, four ticks in the north, three in Central Alberta, one in the south and zero in the Calgary area. Only certain ticks can carry Lyme bacteria. Of the 579 ticks found on animals, there were 118 ticks that could carry Lyme bacteria. A new program started this year for Albertans to bring in ticks found on humans and in the environment. So far, 188 ticks of all types were brought in and six were the type of tick that could carry Lyme disease, but none had the bacteria. “It’s marching westward and northward. So that’s why we added the new stream, to gather more information,” Lavoie said. “We’re trying to establish what the risk of Lyme disease is in Alberta, then we’ll be able to inform Albertans.” He said it is still believed the ticks that can carry the bacteria are transported on animals and birds coming into the province. Woman with Lyme disease needs treatment Continued from page 13 “We know it’s a matter of time before those ticks establish themselves and we’re probably going to start seeing some local populations of those ticks and a portion of those will be infected with the bacteria.” But he said Alberta is prepared to deal with Lyme disease. “We are able to diagnose it. We have all the tests
that are necessary. We follow the recommendations from Health Canada and the Center for Disease Control in the States in terms of the various testing protocol. “Common antibiotics are used to treat that so it’s easy to treat, especially when it’s identified early.” Lavoie said some Albertans travel to the United States to get tested, but testing there doesn’t necessarily follow Alberta’s protocols and people get false

positive results that could point to a number of ailments. Further testing is required. He said some people have been very vocal and critical of Alberta’s Lyme disease protocol. “At some point they believe they have this. They want to have a reason to explain (their symptoms). They’re not satisfied if they get a lab result or diagnosis that says it’s not Lyme disease.” Depending on the weather, tick season will continue for a few more
weeks, so it’s not too late for Albertans to bring in their ticks. “What ticks do is wait for something to pass by and they latch onto it. It’s small in numbers at this time of year, but it’s still possible to find ticks,” Lavoie said. To bring in ticks, contact the local Alberta Health Services environmental public health office. Defending Democracy and the VOTE A beautiful aspect of democracy is that a minority can get their point out without fear of persecution. Unfortunately we have watched as politics degenerated in Rimbey to behind the scene smear campaigns, with abundant rumors and innuendo. While Canadians tend to be more conservative, the last Rimbey election saw a negative campaign; Called “the dirtiest Election campaign in his over 30 years in office” by Rimbey CAO Tony Goode. That campaign successfully swept the old council out. The problem was those that orchestrated that campaign didn’t have a platform, or a plan to successfully operate our community. The results three years later are woefully apparent. After nine years of powerful growth, that saw our community grow to 2,500 and we had a full and thriving business community. Now we see empty building up and down Main Street and over 30 commercial vacancies, and our population has shrunk by over 100 people. The question is will YOU the voter get off of your comfy couch and get out and vote? Will the 450 whom signed the petition that council rejected, and those who voted in the non-binding referendum and those who were deceived last election show up at the voting station and make a choice to
“Get Rimbey Growing Again.”

Band to perform in Rimbey during Canadian tour Coming off a year’s worth of success following their critically-acclaimed sophomore release Semi Truck (Rage Records), produced by Jon Drew (Arkells, Tokyo Police Club,), S&S is packing up their gear and venturing to the far corners of Canada. With an expected 40-date tour, lots of clicks on the odometer, and a truckload of new songs to unleash, their original brand of rock n’ roll is sure make a lasting impression on show-goers. Their new single ‘Semi Truck’ was serviced to national radio stations on September 26. Formed in 2006, S&S consists of sisters Marie-Eve (Merv) on vocals/keys and Véronique (Vern) Mallet on guitar/vocals, backed by John “El Conquistador” Lenherr on drums and Chris Page-Manson on bass. Their music draws from influences such as Metric, Foo Fighters, and Gossip, but ultimately S&S’s attitude-laden ‘pelvic’ rock speaks for itself. An unwavering DIY ethic, untamed stage presence and sound, and ‘rock-or-die’ attitude have garnered the attention and fandom of thousands across the country. “There’s no way we’ll be coming back from this tour without lots of good stories to tell,” says Vern.

“I like the size of the town and the fact it is small enough we can walk anywhere and feel safe. Here, everyone looks out for each other and takes care of each other.” Paul Payson “It has given me a new appreciation of all the work that goes on; the whole process; the behind-the-scenes stuff. Really, small town issues that go with running a municipality are not much different than in a larger city. We just wear more hats than our city counterparts.’ Payson represents council on the library board, the recreation board and the Blindman Youth Action Board. He is also a volunteer fireman. He is pleased with
the progress council has made during his time as a councillor. “It is good seeing the trails being built. I wanted to see that happen. And there has been some progress with sidewalks although we still have a lot of work to do.” As council’s rep on the library board, Payson understand the crowding issue very well. “I’m definitely in favor of finding a solution to the library space issue. We need to find ways to move forward in that issue.”
Payson agreed residents have agreed to disagree over some issues, but he believes the overall goal is the same. “Most people agree they want a nice town to live in, a town they can be proud of. Everyone has the same goal and that is wanting to make the town the best place possible. And whether it’s about a pothole or the library everyone needs to take ownership.” Payson, who is married to Shawna and has two girls, Gillian, 15 and Kailyn, 13, is happy with his family’s community of choice. “I like the size of the town and the face it is small enough we can walk anywhere and feel safe. Here, everyone looks out for each other and takes care of each other.”

Hansen willing to be student advocate
Incumbent Knutson running again
By June Norvila Pamela (Pam) Hansen, who lives in Bentley, is a small business owner, past Bentley town councilor for one term, and a mother of three children - a son who has graduated from Bentley and two teenaged girls currently attending the Bentley school, the very school she attended while growing up in Bentley. She is a devoted community supporter and has sat on many community boards and helped organize projects like Hockeyville and Bentley Generals celebration parades after the team won the Allan Cup. Hansen would like to see both the provincial and federal governments loosen their purse strings and designate more funding towards education. “I have witnessed our schools adapt and
Cliff Knutson, incumbent Bentley town councilor, has decided to run for another term. He has been a town councilor for the past six years (two terms). He currently represents Bentley on the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance, Parkland Airshed Management Zone, Community Planning Service, Lacombe Regional Emergency Management Partnership, Bentley/ Lacombe County Intermunicipal Development Plan Committee, and Bentley Municipal Planning Commission. During his time in office, he has witnessed the completion of the town’s Road Paving, Curb & Gutter and Storm Water Project, re-building of the sewage lagoon berms, the drilling and connection of the third water well, and arena upgrades and commencement of the building of the new fire hall in partnership with Lacombe County. Knutson, a carpenter by trade, relocated in 1976 from Calgary to the Bentley rural area and he and his family moved into Bentley proper in 1997. He has been a seasonal employee as the blending plant operator at Crop Production Services (formerly Lacombe Fertilizer) Bentley plant for many years.
Pamela Hansen change to make up for funding cutbacks,” she says. “I would be a Ward 4 School Trustee with an open mind to fresh ideas and suggestions from administrators, teachers, parents, and students, to ensure that The Wolf Creek School Board allocates money to areas of our education system that matter the most – to benefit our wonderful students.”
DO YOUR PART
She has found that a frequent comment while talking with people in the community is “Oh! I don’t have any children in school, but thanks for stopping by.” With societal changes “our children spend more time with teachers and support staff than they do with their parents. School is now more than just a place to read, write, and do arithmetic,” Hansen says. “It is where our children learn to make friends, work out problems, run, play, sing, and learn to be vibrant, honest, hard-working, amazing citizens, and future leaders.” “I am eager to see new ideas, teaching strategies, and technological advances be incorporated into the school system. I will be an advocate for each student. Please feel free to email me at pamhansen73@hotmail.com .”
“My involvement of over 30 years in the community of Bentley is through my business ventures as well as an active member of the Bentley Curling Club, and past member of the Bentley Lions Club,” Knutson stated. He was a farmer, has had his own spraying busiCliff Knutson ness, was a curling rink ice maker, a postal mail contractor, and a small business owner in town. “If elected I intend to continue to focus on maintaining the Town’s infrastructure and constructing new infrastructure that will serve the citizens well into the future.” “As a member of council I will continue to bring common sense and practical solutions to discussions held and decisions made.” Married to Cora for fifty plus years, they have five grown children, and many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Division 4 farmer runs for county council By Treena Mielke Roland Grutterink is throwing his hat into the political ring as a candidate for Division 4 of Ponoka County. The amiable farmer, who runs a cow/calf operation with 175 head, was born and raised in the county. He comes from a family that has lived, worked and breathed agriculture for generations, and is pleased to continue to be part of the rural Alberta lifestyle. As a county councillor, he believes he could listen to his friends and neighbours, take their concerns to the table, and help make decisions which would benefit everyone. Grutterink doesn’t see Ponoka County as having a lot of burning issues, although he admits the condition of roads seems to be a number one priority. “The roads are a lot better than they used to be,’ he said. “They weren’t as good as they are now a few years ago.” Grutterink doesn’t believe trucks from large farming operations are damaging county roads. “I think more damage comes from commercial and custom operators. If there is problems, I think they needs to be dealt with on a per incident basis. A strong supporter of meeting the needs of seniors, Grutterink is undecided about his position regarding
Rimoka Housing and Bethany Group. “I think we need to look after our own elderly. They have raised their families here, they have given a lot. They are the fabric of the community. Grutterink said he has no agenda and no ax to grind, but simply wants to do his part, adding people living in the county simply want to know there is someone out there they can talk to if they do have a concern. He believes he could be that person. “I talk to people. I’m a good listener and I believe I am a fairly good communicator.” Roland Grutterink Grutterink has been a director with the UFA for 15 years. He said the position has given him experience in leadership and communication. “It has been a huge learning experience for me.” Grutterink is married to Irene and the couple have four children; Dustin, Aya, Rico and Selena and one grandson, Beau.

Coun. Beebe expresses thanks Dear Editor, I want to thank everyone in District 5 for the opportunity they gave me to serve as a representative for nine years on Ponoka County Council. Through thick and thin I can honestly say I enjoyed serving on the council. I am proud of my many accomplishments, and wish sometimes that I could have done more. I specifically enjoyed working on the Rimoka Housing Authority Board and I want to thank Gawney Hinckley, Joe Anglin, and Jack Webb for all their hard work. We came very close to getting a new lodge for Rimbey. If it was not for some small-
minded politics, which happens everywhere, I think we would have been successful. Rimbey needs a new Lodge. Again, thank you to everyone, there are a great number of people deserving of my gratitude to list here, and I don’t want to offend anyone by forgetting a name. Truth be known, my memory isn’t failing, but it seems to take a lot of off time these days. In all seriousness, if I can give a piece of advice to my successors, keep principles before personalities. Always remember the greatest strength in a democracy is the ability to compromise. Keith Beebe

Incumbent Ward 4 school trustee for over 20 years By June Norvila Karin Engen from Eckville, incumbent Ward 4 (Eckville / Bentley area) school trustee for well over 20 years, is willing to stay on. “I am very passionate about public education in Alberta,” she says. Engen was first elected to the Lacombe County School Board in 1989 and remained up until it became the Wolf Creek Public School Board in 1995 when she was reelected again. She has chaired the Wolf Creek School Board and has represented Zone 4 on the Alberta School Boards Association board of directors for three years. Engen has seen different teaching strategies to better engage learners and the technology to deliver programs change and evolve over the years. She believes community engagement and professional development in education is important, and supports inclusive education within special education as long as results are monitored. Engen says,” I believe that it is the role of a trustee to advocate strongly on behalf of students and staff. Decisions made by the locally elected school board need to be in the best interest of the students and staff. I believe that education needs to evolve and
it needs to be prog r e s s ive in order to meet the needs of today’s student learners. I have experience and knowlKarin Engen edge. I want to continue to be involved in the rapidly changing field of education – it is an exciting time in education.” Engen has a teaching degree, has been married to Terry for over 34 years and they have had three children graduate from Eckville Jr./Sr. High school. She remains very involved in her local community with groups and organizations such as the Eckville & Community Youth Society, the Eckville Childcare Society, the Eckville Community Development Association, Eckville Neighborhood Place and the Lacombe County Early Childhood Development Coalition.

Sutherland passionate about education By June Norvila “With over 20 years experience as a mentor, educator, and coach in Wolf Creek Schools I believe that I possess the tools necessary to support Zone 4 as School Board Trustee,” says Peter Sutherland from the Blackfalds area. Sutherland is a retired teacher and a small business owner with 15 years construction, oilfield and trades experience. He believes all students have the right to an education and a responsibility to pursue it in a positive, creative, healthy and supportive learning environment. Sutherland says,” Over the past few years I have spent time talking with friends and neighbors about education and the one thing that became apparent was that the “best teachers” we could recall were the ones with a passion for young people and for education. It did not and does not matter what the subject is as much as the energy that those teachers put into their curriculum. If we looked at what we considered success, in any field of endeavor, success is achieved by studying and perfecting the basics first. It did not matter if it was piano, art, woodworking, or mathematics. All the examples of success started with a sound understanding of the basics.”
Sutherland goes on to say that he will communicate, inform and involve everyone, help set goals and priorities that reflect the community’s wishes, lobby local and provincial government, and make a commitment to be involved and available. “I am a proud supporter of our local commuPeter Sutherland nities. A good system of education has to be nurtured and supported by people with a passion for education that can stand up for what they believe in. I have that passion. As a parent, foster parent, friend and educator I am passionate about education for our youth as they are our future.”

running for mayor
Submitted by Lynda Haarstad-Petten I was born and raised in Bentley, worked at the municipal office for ten years, and just completed three years as a councillor which gives me a perspective from all angles of running a municipality. I may not be experienced as a mayor but don’t believe anyone ever is the first time they are in a new position. I do believe my past experience, not only in the municipal world but also in the many volunteer positions I have held, would make me an excellent representative for Bentley. I am approachable, a forward-thinker and believe in consulting and open communication with our residents and am definitely passionate about the future of Bentley.  A developer has expressed interest in residential development but council needs to ensure that this will become a reality. Without people having a place to live there is no sustainability for commercial businesses. With the development of Sandy Point, we have a real potential of drawing new businesses by marketing Bentley. Council needs to

build the trust of our residents by providing open dialogue with them. We are elected by the residents to do what is best for the community but we also need to listen to them. We need to focus on younger families and find out their interests to keep them here – they are our town’s future. Seniors’ housing is another key issue. Rather than let them leave, we need to look at keeping them here – they helped build our town. This community has so many individuals who could share their talents. Some means of facilitating these talents needs to be developed. Residents should not have to go out-of-town for their leisure activities and end up shopping somewhere else. We need to support our own town by keeping our dollars here.

Conflict is a natural part of life What is a good childhood? Is it one that is happy? For the most part, yes. But happy in terms of being confident about self, rather than happy meaning without any sadness? Parents who cannot bear to see their child feeling sad may do them a disservice by trying to eliminate this feeling prematurely. If the child is sad because he or she wants a certain toy, or to watch television, and the parent gives in rather than allowing the child to feel sad, this is creating an unhealthy pattern. The child learns to intensify or extend the sadness until they get what they want. As an adult, this person may feel sad for years awaiting a promotion, a certain car or a special house. If, on the other hand, parents use opportunities such as the ones above to explain to the young child that it is not always possible to have what we want, when we want it, and model
for the child productive strategies to use at such times, healthy coping behaviours are developed. “No you can’t watch TV now. I know that you are feeling sad about that but what can you do instead?” We can explain, in language that they understand, that we create our own sadness by limiting options. Many adults are still stuck in this pattern. The same applies to conflicts with playmates. If we rush in too quickly to come to the child’s defense, or take up the issue with the other parent, we deprive children of a valuable learning opportunity to communicate to another about the conflict, and to find a way to resolve it. The other extreme is not helpful either -- when a child comes to an adult with a problem he or she is experiencing with a playmate or sibling, and is told to go away and stop tattling, this does not teach problem solving skills. These are
complex skills which traditionally have not been taught. This is why relationships struggle and office politics present continuing problems in adult Gwen We were Randall-Young life. never taught that conflict is a natural part of life, nor taught to deal with it in ways that may move past it with trust and respect for one another. Grudges held toward others, whether family or co-workers, are testimony to our rather restricted understandings
about human feelings and behaviour; and our lack of models of positive communication patterns. This is no one’s fault, it is simply where we are in our evolutionary development. But we now know there is such a thing as peaceful conflict resolution. Perhaps our generation is on the leading edge of a new kind of literacy which is more profound in its implications than modern computer literacy. “Communication literacy” may allow children not only to get along with others meaningfully and peacefully, but also to create the inner dialogues which will help them to cope productively with whatever challenges life brings. Former councillor enters race By June Norvila Robin Lemay has been a Bentley resident for 18 years and served three consecutive three-year terms on council from 2001-2010, part of that time serving as the deputy mayor, so she well understands the workings of town council. Three of the issues she considers to be very important for Bentley at this time are development, waste disposal, and the unfinished Highway No.12 bypass. Development: “I have always considered that encouraging and attracting residential development and new business is crucial for Bentley’s sustainability. It will be a very high priority for me,” Lemay stated. Solid waste/garbage-household and construction: “I still believe we need to find a viable alternative to waste being bur-
