Cloverdale-raised John Lowe, 27, one of five young international war veterans, was a guest on Rocky Mountaineer’s inaugural Life Changing Train for Heroes, which departed Vancouver on Oct. 1. Escorted by an RCMP honour guard and full fanfare, Lowe, his mom Shere Lowe, grandmother Doris Fraser, and friend Joe McCarthy, joined fellow Australian and U.K Afghanistan vets and families for a terrain sharply contrasting to their military service. Shere Lowe credits Wounded Warriors Canada for their unfailing supporting of John’s recovery.

Soup kitchens on hold Three groups offering free meals and more to Cloverdale’s less fortunate citizens have suspended operations for the next couple of months. One is the hot lunch offered at noon every Thursday by Shepherd’s House Society’s Inner City Mission, at Pacific Community Church at 5337 180 Street. Cloverdale Korean Presbyterian Church pastor Clara Soohyun Choi told patrons and volunteers their weekly soup kitchen will not resume until December at the earliest. Monday and Wednesday night cafes offered by the Pacific Community Church community, and Cloverdale Christian Fellowship, respectively, are also on hold. Major renovations are underway at Pacific Community Church, the

host church, where a community kitchen is being constructed as part of a massive campaign. Once complete, it’s hoped the kitchen will enhance existing soup kitchen initiatives and lead to other programs. A commercial kitchen is needed so food can be safely stored, prepared, cooked and served on the premises of the church, which also acts as a nerve centre for the annual Cloverdale Christmas Hamper program, which assists hundreds of local families and individuals each holiday season. “We expect to have this space opened by the end of November, and maybe a soft opening through to the end of Christmas season,” Alan Cadwell, director of Facility Development said. Until recently, between 70 and 100 hot meals a week were being distributed, he said.

at short notice to display at the event. In addressing the crowd, Bond – Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training, as well as Labour, marveled at the volunteer spirit on display, and said the museum will attract visitors from all over the province. “I live in Prince George and I know there are people who will travel all the way here to see museums like this,” Bond said. “I think this will be a real drawing card for your community.” Stephanie Cadieux, Surrey-Cloverdale MLA, also offered her congratulations. “The passion of the people in this community is tremendous,” Cadieux said. “It’s a long time in the making,” she added, calling it a tremendous addition to “our little centre of the universe,” a reference to Bill Reid, a former Surrey Heritage Society director a booster of the project who passed away in May. Judy Villeneuve, chair of the city’s cultural committee, said she’s looking forward to bringing her grandson to the new museum. “C o n g r a t u l a t i o n s to all the people who worked really hard,” she said. “When you first came before council, we were a little bit skeptical on how you were going to get all the trucks to fit in this museum.” She said Surrey is putting together a cultural marketing plan that includes the museum. Acting mayor Mary Martin helped official-

ly open the museum, which she said gives Surrey residents a deeper understanding of the city’s founding decades. She offered special thanks to the Surrey Heritage Society. “Your ongoing dedication to preserving our heritage continues to inspire us to learn about

the generations that shaped our city.” Director and volunteer Harold Wellenbrink recalled the countless hours spent cleaning and polishing the floors – just one aspect of the long road to the grand opening. “All in all, in a short period of time we have

become a destination to many individuals who love heritage and history and particularly the vintage trucks on display,” said the evening’s M.C., local historian Roger Bose. The trucks have been “lovingly restored and fiercely protected over the years,” he added.

Newspaper is Curb crime going to pot spree in Clayton Marijuana referendum won’t change anything To the editor; Re: “Store acts as petition sign up spot,” Oct. 3. I was surprised to see the Cloverdale Reporter going to pot by giving publicity to Gypsy Moon, and the Sensible B.C. marijuana referendum petition. I am not that surprised that aged 60 and up have signed this petition. It is probably the last and final gasp from the Turn-On and Tune Pot petition will be a bust. Out, Hippie Generation. That too, will finally pass. Even if this referendum is successful, it will not change anything. Marijuana and all other illegal drugs come under the federal government’s criminal laws, while this referendum only applies to B.C. We have already seen how our prime minister has handled controversial issues in the past. That is the reason why he is still our prime minister. Fred Perry Surrey

Our online readers are sharing their brushes with crime in the Clayton Heights neighbourhood in reaction to last week’s cover story, “Raising the alarm in Clayton Heights.” The Surrey RCMP’s Cloverdale/ Port Kells district office issued a community alert warning residents about the break and enters, particularly those where thieves are not having to force their way in. Residents are being reminded to close their garage doors and keep them locked, among other precautions, in an attempt to thwart thieves. Meanwhile, area residents are commenting – and commiserating – online at CloverdaleReporter.com: “Happened to me,” said Mike Desmet. “[The] Door has been mysteriously opened four times in the past month,” wrote Marianne Grey. “The last time on Monday, when a neighbour told us of it. After being robbed in January and told we probably left the garage open, I doubt it. The garage is permanently locked now and

I am calling in about the frenzied type movers in the alley.” “Be aware,” added Desiree Boehm-Cairns. “I reported one guy sitting out front of our garage who actually did open ours up while sitting in visitors’ parking. Glad I have a large dog.” “I always try to keep the basement entrance from the garage locked, too,” added Mandy Bradford-Pede. Another said he lost a pair of shoes left outside his front because they were dirty. “Cops have been to three places that I see from my window due to thieves and my neighbours cars smashed!! It’s crazy,” added James Mae. “One of those burglaries [was] my neighbor across the street!” said Kevin Lahay. For more information, visit the Surrey RCMP’s website, surrey.rcmp. ca, or visit the office at 5732 176A Street. And remember to report any suspicious activity or people in your neighbourhood by calling the Surrey RCMP’s non-emergency number at 604-599-0502.

n the mission to become a more positive person there are many tools you can have in your arsenal. It is smart to have a variety of techniques handy, but the best tool I have found for boosting positivity is gratitude. This may sound like some silly idea that a grade-school kid would come up with, but believe me, gratitude is powerful. When you make it a habit to be thankful for things in your life you will find more and more things to be thankful for. Earl Nightingale once wrote, “You get what you think about all day long” and he was right. What you focus on you will get more of. This is the nature of the Law of Attraction that has become such a popular topic as of late. So what do you want more of? What makes you feel good? If you focus on being grateful for what you already have in your life, the Law of Attraction says that you will attract more things to be thankful for. How cool is that!? I have made gratitude a daily habit. Every morning I state at least three things I am thankful for before I even get out of bed. Then during the day I really feel gratitude for things that happen like making all green lights on the way to work and getting a great parking spot. When I go to bed I also say at least three things I am grateful for. I call this a Gratitude Journal. I actually started the practice by writing things down every morning and night that I was thankful for. I kept a small notebook

Everything’s Wright Knee injury gives Nikki Wright a new perspective on life and sport By Gary Ahuja The look on her face says it all. Cloverdale’s Nikki Wright had just scored her first goal of the season, to momentarily tie the score at one. A look at the picture (photo at right) shows

pure, raw emotion. What it doesn’t show is the behind-thescenes-work over the past 14 months leading up to this point. “It was an incredible feeling, we were at home in front of our fans, my last home

opener,” Wright described of the goal. It came in the 85th minute of the Trinity Western Spartans match against the visiting Victoria Vikes last month, the second game of the Canada West soccer season. “It felt the same as it was in my first year,” she said. “I remember having so much energy and loving the sport and having so much fun. “I think as time went on, that kind of gotten taken away a little bit.” And it took a serious knee injury for Wright to rediscover her passion for soccer. ••••• Wright remembers everything about the play. It was July 27, 2012 and on an artificial turf field in Chilliwack. She was playing for the Fraser Valley Action — a summer team made up of Trinity Western players which plays in the Pacific Coast Soccer League — in a semifinal.

In her first four seasons of the blue and gold, Wright scored 36 goals and set up another 16 in 73 games played. The team also won CIS titles in both 2008 and 2009. Being taken away from the game was a foreign concept for Wright.

“It was extremely difficult,” she admitted. “I had never had to sit in the stands. If I have been injured, I have been on at least the bench with the team. “It was really hard because I felt a little bit more disconnected from the team with my injury.” Last season would have been Wright’s fifth and final year of CIS eligibility. Her knee was sore going into the contest and very early on, as she was running down the sideline, the opposing player gave her a bit of a nudge. Wright was on track to graduate last spring, but instead is completing her final credits this fall. She put her efforts into rehabbing her knee. While her teammates were on the field practising, Wright was spending two to three hours daily on treatment and working out. On the field, the Spartans had another successful season, culminating in the program’s fourth national championship. While some players may have felt bothered by not being able to contribute, the fact the team didn’t need her made things easier for Wright. “It is harder when my team is not having success because you want to do everything you can to impact the game,” she explained. “You want to do everything you can to help them, especially through the harder times.” And it was away from the game that Wright was able to re-discover her passion for the sport. “I see my injury as almost being one of the best things that has happened to me,” she explained. “I have learned a lot about myself.” Soccer was beginning to take over Wright’s life. “I was putting so much emphasis on sport, on my performance, it would affect

The subject of the annual juried arts show is images of harness racing, with attention to the equipment used in the sport, the participants, the track and/or other details. The term Pacers refers to the horses – Standardbreds are pacers not trotters. The driver and horse wear the colours of the stable.

I recently had the opportunity to travel to Dawson Creek with some of my fellow MLA’s to see the benefits first hand. We need to remember that this industry benefits the province as a whole, revenues and royalties which come from this industry help pay for projects in other parts of the province, including right here in Surrey. Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is developing a training strategy to meet the downstream needs of the LNG industry, while growing to address BC’s upstream resource sector demands, including oil and gas, mining and forestry. With the Trades and Technology Campus right here in Cloverdale, KPU is working with the northern Colleges to help supply apprentices and skilled workers to meet industry demand. The opportunity is ripe for Lower Mainland businesses to get a piece of the action. All sorts of products and services will be needed: construction trades, metal fabrication, camp services, IT, engineering, finance, professional services, you name it. We have the momentum now and must pursue our opportunities with optimism. We have major players in the sector that are very serious about the prospect of B.C.’s LNG potential. This is no pipe dream, despite what the critics would have you believe.

The Surrey Crime Prevention Society has been awarded the 2013 Canadian Criminal Justice Award in recognition of the valuable work done by its staff and volunteers. SCPS director Karen Reid Sidhu accepted the award on behalf of the society on Oct. 4. “I’m proud of our fabulous team who are the reason for our success,” she said, adding the award is shared with community partners the City of Surrey, Surrey RCMP, ICBC, BC Corrections and others.

The society supports the City of Surrey’s Crime Reduction Strategy and the mandate to enhance community safety using an innovative problem-solving approach to address the root cause of issues related to crime. Volunteers provide traffic safety awareness, community safety volunteer tours, a community safety watch program, a speed watch program and provide anti-graffiti reporting and removal. The SCPS also assists with education, reporting and awareness

of wire theft, along with the Crime Reduction Strategy Team, the Surrey Fire Department, and the RCMP, training more than 50 volunteers in wire theft prevention. The society currently has 240 volunteers. In 2012, they contributed more than 16,594 volunteer hours. Volunteers audited 20,204 vehicles through the Locking Out Auto Crime Program.
