Artists auction work for infant mortality program The Shanti Uganda Society will be hosting its 5th Annual Evening of Art dinner and art auction Oct. 24 to raise funds for its life-saving maternal and infant health and HIV/AIDS programs, carried out at the Shanti Uganda Birth House in Nsaasi Village, Uganda. An average 16 women die every day in Uganda due to birth-related complications. With an aim to reduce maternal and infant mortality and support women living with HIV/AIDS, the work of Shanti Uganda has garnered the interest of one of Vancouver’s most highly sought-after artists: Ethiopian-born artist Yared Nigussu (best known for his large-scale paintings and colourful palette). The Shanti Uganda Birth House is a solar-powered maternity centre providing mother-centered care throughout pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum, staffed by a team of Ugandan midwives, a traditional birth attendant, laboratory technicians and support staff. Shanti Uganda also supports an HIV+ Women’s Income Generating Group, a Teen Girls Health and Empowerment program, and a sustainable community garden. In addition to two of Nigussu’s portraiture paintings and one landscape painting, the live art auction will feature pieces by Martha Sturdy, Marta Baricsa, Sonja Picard, Howe Street Gallery, StoneAge Art, Bao-Xi, and many more. t’s the kind of party everyone is talking about, but only 1,000 people will get to attend. And the big question on everyone’s minds (before they shell out the $89-plus per ticket) is what will the Halloween Social be like? Well, we can tell you, to start, that to rent out an entire hotel, do the production and hire the talent, it’s conservatively costing the organizers close to $80,000. So says Max Cunningham, promotional heavy lifter and Joe’s Apartment investor, who, at the tender age of 25, has put 800-person parties to bed and had his say in social-event-of-the-year fodder such as the Deighton Cup. “My partners and I are all at that age where we don’t want to go to a bar or a nightclub anymore. This is a very good transition, because everyone still wants to go out, but they want something different.” So, fresh off an inspirational six-month trip to Paris, financially reinforced with a small army of anonymous backers (who prefer to keep their names out of print due to the public nature of their day jobs) and aligned with the retro-spectacular Burrard Hotel, Cunningham has conceived the

Shen. Eight rooms will be designed by local artists with Natasha Lands of Cherchez la Femme hosting a competition where guests vote to determine the winner. It will also be the only night you can chill with the ghost of chemopatient-come-meth-cooker Walter White in a Breaking Bad room.

Coming in from out of town? The top two floors are reserved for all-access pass holders — $550 covers your night’s stay complete with a two-person VIP experience curated by James Grass of the Vancouver Club. “You come through the back door of the hotel and go down into this haunted burlesque...,” he halts abruptly. “It’s so hard for me, because I’m so excited, but I don’t want to give it away!” And the entire party looks down onto an open air stage and dance floor, where Walshy (Major Lazer), Paul Devro (Mad Decent) and more will perform. “Different venues are always trying to tell you what you can’t do, but [The Burrard] is always trying to find a way that we can do something that’s really going to make this party that much better.” And, having learned from the last Burrard party — Jamcouver’s Hotel Takeover, from which the Halloween Social was inspired — Cunningham has hired 20 licensed all-night security guards. In addition, two police officers and an off-duty firefighter will attend. If it hasn’t already, the party is expected to sell out this week, so if you’re one of the lucky millenary, keep your eye out for young Max Cunningham, who, at press time, was fittingly planning to appear in Gatsby-esque attire. A walking dead winner By Kelsey Klassen

ould Granville Island be the future location of a zombie apocalypse? It’s all up to award-winning theatre artist Andy Thompson, whose new show, Zombie Syndrome: On Death Island, recruits audience members as special agents on an interactive, smartphone-enabled, thrill-seeking adventure at a secret location. Last year, group after group of sold out audiences worked together to save the world and elude zombies. The exact starting point of this year’s all-new show remains undisclosed until the day before the appointed meeting, when you receive a phone call with instructions on where to meet (somewhere in central Vancouver). Once assembled, your group is taken on a very public and unique theatre adventure. Today, Blanche Macdonald makeup artist Elizabeth McLeod gives Thompson a taste of his own flesh-eating medicine with step-bystep instructions on how disguise yourself, should the dead ever reanimate: 1) Create texture by brushing on liquid latex. 2) Add alternate texture with tissue applied over glue, then seal with

latex on a foam wedge. 3) Seal tissue and glue with Ben Nye translucent powder. 4) Apply several different shades of red over the texture to create a motled “road rash”. 5 & 6) Add more reds, this time applied with a fine brush to create veining in wounds and skin. 7) Paint dark rings under the eyes. 8) Trowel thick blood into the wound textures. Final: An overall dusting of dirt and a messy dollop of liquid blood completes the effect. Create wounds and decaying skin texture with Alcone’s 3rd Degree, from any special effects makeup store. The silicone product comes in two parts that you mix together and apply to the skin in the form you want. Ripped up tissue and a latex can also be used. To apply the tissue, use an adhesive such as Spirit Gum or Pros-Aide. Then, with a foundation sponge, stipple a layer of latex all over the tissue. Once it has dried, with a new sponge, stipple another layer of latex.

First thing you changed: I painted the living room a soft shade of grey with white trim. I had to get rid of the existing dark red walls and black trim as I felt like I was in a vampire’s nest. There’s also a weird old shelving unit that someone had built into the bathroom — even though it’s great storage, it was a bit of an eyesore. I fixed it by making a curtain from a 1960s Marimekko print to hide the open shelves and used funky vinyl tiles on the top. Feature you brag about: I have just over 1,000 square feet of space and this apartment is set up like a house with a formal foyer, three huge closets, well-proportioned rooms and a separate kitchen and dining room. This suite has also retained all its original mouldings, flooring, fire-

The kitchen counters have all the original tiles and cupboards which provide a ton of space for all of my many things. That conversation piece: The kitchen still has the built-in ice box. Visitors always want to open it up and take a look! The decor: I live the vintage life. My style blends items from the 1920s to 1960s. I believe you can layer many eras and styles together to achieve a unique space. My china cabinet, sideboard and all of their contents are from the 1930s. Pretty much all of my kitchenware is from the 1940s and originated in my grandfather’s restaurant. I have a serious love for my 1950s bark cloth curtains, a funky 1960s Danish modern bar and combine these vintage items with a new modern couch. I don’t believe in anything being too precious and on display, I like a comfortable feel and I use all of the items that I have. People have told me I have lots of interesting stuff to look at.

Neighbourhood haunts: Any of the West End dog parks. Compared to your last place: Double the amount of space for the same amount of rent with 100 times more character. Favourite thing to do at home: Dance with my pug while listening to 78s on my vintage floor-standing radio.

The backstory: Most of my antique furniture and vintage decor came from my Nana’s houses. When I was younger I used to go through my Nana’s basement hunting for treasures; she found it funny and let me keep whatever I found. The modern pieces of shelving and tables are from friends who used to make furniture. I also decorate with my own artwork as I do fibre art, pottery and life drawing, plus I have a lot of talented artist friends who have kindly graced me with their work. Because I love vintage people tend to give me things, even my building manager brought me an old manual typewriter that he’d found! Downsides: I’d love to have a balcony and an in-suite washer and dryer.

ast week, I talked about the now-launched Taste of Yaletown dining festival, which runs through October 27. Lots of great lunch and dinner menus at $25, $35 and $45 await the hungry palate. I introduced a few more established spots in that article, so this week is for the young bloods. Here are my choices from among the more recently opened dining spots.

Good Wolfe The $35 threecourse menu includes options such as the steelhead “pastrami” or house terrine, as well as the hearty braised beef cheeks (pictured) with country-style risotto and the famous lemon cake for dessert. While some of the classics still remain, many restaurants have come and gone. Yaletown’s popularity may have peaked, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have a second wind. A few highlights include: Good Wolfe: Co-owner and chef Josh Wolfe (also owner of the Fresh, Local, Wild food truck) opened his restaurant in July this year. With mains under $25, a Chef’s Tasting Menu starting at $40 and affordable lunches, it’s become an instant hit. La Pentola della Quercia: Sister restaurant of La Quercia, La Pentola is good use of the Opus Hotel space which has seen a few restaurants in the past. Its Sunday Supper Series (last Sunday of every month) is worth going to. Minami: Always a favourite for me, it’s a Pacific Northwest take on traditional Japanese food. Sister restaurant Miku is traditional, but there are overlapping menu items. Urban Thai Bistro: I haven’t been since its sexy new make over, but its new lounge-like atmosphere brings a new crowd. e’re doing a circuit through a few Spanish wine regulations this week, and I promise it’ll be way more fun than that sounds! You see, once you’ve got a handle on some key words constantly seen on the wine labels of Spain, you’ll gain a good

Not only does the fact that this wine is from Rioja give us pretty good odds that it contains a good dose of Tempranillo, but seeing that it’s a crianza assures us it was aged at least two years with a minimum six months aging in oak before it left the winery. While this has obviously even had a couple more years to develop since then, the dark and brambly purple fruit is pretty lush and juicy, a little vanilla bean offers depth and clean acidity keeps it fresh.

If you like your Spanish reds to be a little dusty, leathery and heavy on the funk, then this one’s for you. Further along the maturing rules, any reserva out of Spain has to have been aged a minimum of three years with at least one of ‘em in oak. Dried berry fruit, herbs and potpourri on the nose lead to fruit leather, pastrami, dates and a little sip of cola on the finish.

45 per cent back new Massey Bridge Poll shows many Metro residents undecided By Jeff Nagel

poll has found 45 per cent of Metro Vancouverites support the replacement of the Massey Tunnel. Fourteen per cent said they oppose the province’s plan to build a new $3-billion bridge with as many as 10 lanes, while a large portion – 40 per cent – said they either had no position or needed more information before taking one. The survey of 600 B.C. residents was conducted by NRG Research Group and Peak Communicators.

Support levels fell to 28 per cent among respondents living elsewhere in B.C. “Support for the Massey Tunnel replacement is highest among those most likely to use the route,” said NRG research manager Lesley Duncan. The poll also asked what the province’s top priority should be in deciding infrastructure upgrades. Thirty-one per cent said the top priority should be reducing traffic congestion, while 23 per cent each said protecting the environment and another 23 per cent listed integrating with public transit. Older respondents over 35 were more likely to choose congestion relief over protecting the environment. Pollsters did not ask respondents if their opinion of the planned bridge would change if it is tolled.

A fifth fail to tap out in Compass card test

three-week beta test of TransLink’s new Compass card payment system found nearly a fifth of the 10,000 volunteers forgot to tap off with their cards as they exited the transit system and may have paid too much. Users tap their Compass card against readers to board a bus or pass through new SkyTrain faregates. They’re supposed to tap off again when they leave to record how far they went and have their account debited accordingly.

Those who forget are billed for the maximum three zones, when they might have only travelled one or two. Eighty one per cent of users remembered to tap out during the test period, which recorded a total of 568,760 taps. TransLink vice-president Mike Madill said overall the system performed well, but testers flagged several problems TransLink is working to fix. They also found the validators on buses were often slow to detect cards.

before his untimely passing), the news still came as a pleasant shock, says co-founder Maureen Webb. “We were very surprised and honoured to hear that [Columbia Records and Fox] planned to include Project Limelight in the tribute episode,” Webb told WE Vancouver this past weekend. Webb said that Elena Kirschner, Cory’s long-time manager, and Melissa Kates, his publicist, were instrumental in fostering the relationship between Project Limelight and the entertainment corporations. “[None] of this would have happened if [Kirschner in particular] hadn’t had the vision to make Project Limelight the small ray of light in this very dark time,” said Webb. The funds raised will assist Project Limelight in its mission to enrich the lives of local children through free performing arts programs. Monteith was deeply committed to Project Limelight, and his passing continues to be felt by the organization and the kids it serves. “With the children who are old enough to understand, we’ve dealt with it privately, and with the help of their parents,” said Webb. For the most part, though, Webb says the global attention that Project Limelight has received since Monteith’s death hasn’t quite entered the children’s world. Their focus: a pantomime version of Snow White at SFU Woodward’s in January.

Great Canadian Bucket List New book details everything Canadians should do before they die By Gen Handley

n 2003, a day before being sworn in as a Canadian citizen, Robin Esrock was riding his scooter through downtown Vancouver when a car ran a stop sign and hit him, breaking his left knee cap. â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a total wake-up call,â&#x20AC;? he says . â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hey, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to go see the world.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? With the money that he received for the damages, Esrock, a journalist, bought an around-theworld ticket with plans of writing about his adventures, checking off experiences on a list of things to do before he dies. These adventures became content for a travel column in the Vancouver Sun and then a National Geographic and OLN travel writing show called Word Travels. Years later, Esrock turned his attention to Canada with a Globe and Mail column focused on things to do in Canada before you die. Esrock was approached by a publisher to turn the column into a book, The Great Canadian Bucket List. For 18 months, Esrock explored the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s provinces and territories, ticking off the 115 experiences which are in the new book as well as an accompanying website (CandianBucketlist.com). â&#x20AC;&#x153;The incredible thing, I thought, was nobody had done it before; it seemed like such an obvious book to writeâ&#x20AC;? says the South Africa native. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Canada is almost like 13 countries in one. I want people to see that there are so many incredible experiences and things to do in their own backyard.â&#x20AC;? From hardcore adventure to winter festivals to intimate wildlife encounters, the list in Esrockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book represents the diversity and vastness of the Canadian experience. He repelled down cliffs in Nova Scotia (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s terrifyingâ&#x20AC;?), he mingled with polar bears in northern Manitoba (â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was just an amazing, incredible encounter with the animalsâ&#x20AC;?) and he got drunk at the annual winter carnival in Quebec (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re drinking something called Caribou â&#x20AC;&#x201C; like hot brandy wine â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and partying your face off.â&#x20AC;?)

ive years ago, Ballet BC, which operates on a $3.4-million dollar budget, was on the brink of bankruptcy. Now, just days prior to the launch of its 2013/14 season, it has announced its third consecutive operating surplus: a healthy $150,000 — the largest in company history. Named “a company to watch” by the prestigious Dance magazine in January, executive director Branislav Henselmann credits the ongoing success to artistic director Emily Molnar, who, after four years of progressive vision, is entering a new, three-year contract with the ballet company. Having almost lost Molnar to Europe earlier in her career, her ability to blend her innovative Emily Molnar repertoire with more traditional performances by visiting companies has established Molnar as a crucial voice in the Canadian dance conversation. This was only further reinforced by Ballet BC’s recent achievements on tour this summer. Performances at preeminent arts festivals such as Jacob’s Pillow and the Festival des arts de Saint-Saveur were greeted with sell-out crowds and standing ovations, showcasing the work the company has been creating for the past four years. By touring, Molnar is not only creating longevity for the work and an opportunity for her dancers to delve deeper into their own artistic development, but she is building Ballet BC’s presence and relevancy outside of Vancouver. “To be ambassadors of work that is Canadian, of work that is being created in Vancouver, and be able to take it outside of our city... It just helps to propel what is going on in dance in Canada to a larger public, and what’s going on in Vancouver across the country as well,” says the former Ballet BC dancer, who toured extensively through North America and Europe during her acclaimed career. Molnar approaches each new season with the same overarching goal: questioning what dance is, where dance is going, building a larger conversation with Ballet BC’s evolving audience and staying in tune with what patrons are hearing about dance, and art in general. “Every year we try to bring in choreographers and collaborators who will have that conversation with us, who are taking dance seriously, who are interested in it being a critical art form and interested in educating new audiences about dance. We’re also very proud when bringing people from Canada, because we have an enormous amount of talent in this country that needs to stay also in this country. It doesn’t need to leave in order to get opportunity. We really want to be a creative hub for what people are trying to investigate in dance.” Each year she looks towards bringing a repertoire that is not only going to attract new audiences and

push her dancers, but attract new talent. “[I want] dancers who are going to want to work and are going to say, ‘I want to come to Vancouver because what’s going on in Vancouver is important. I want to come from Sweden and be a part of that, because it’s exciting.’ We’re trying to build a global bridge between the dance community.” Ballet BC is bringing local communities together, as well, having launched Up — a membership program for patrons aged 21-45 which allows exclusive access to a series of intimate experiences, including taking a ballet class with the company. At one point in its 28-season past, however, Ballet BC was known as an isolationist entity. “I was around before Ballet BC 2.0, as it were, before they hit the reset button,” recalls DanceHouse producer Jim Smith. “DanceHouse was actually born in the environment of the previous incarnation of Ballet BC, which was very much driven by a sole creator who saw the company as a vehicle for his own artistic expression. There were other works on the companies artistic repertoire, of course, but there were fewer of them. John Alleyne at the time was very focused in on a somewhat story ballet approach, and it was a very stark contrast to what we were trying to do.” DanceHouse, not unlike Ballet BC now, presents works by internationally acclaimed choreographers in Vancouver. “Emily has done a remarkable job of bringing Ballet BC back from the brink.” Of the surplus, Smith adds that “it is a remarkable feat in these particular times, and definitely in this particular city, on the part of Ballet BC, its board, certainly its executive director Branislav, who is a great addition to Vancouver, and Emily, as well. It takes a village to put on these large artistic enterprises,” he says with a knowing laugh. Beginning with Tilt Oct. 17 to 19, the new season is all about large artistic enterprises. On the heels of the enormous 2011 success of 1st Flash, Molnar has commissioned an exuberant new piece from Finnish choreographer Jorma Elo. She is also débuting a new, full-company work of her own. To build the score, she challenged the 18 dancers to examine works by Emily Dickinson, Bill Viola and Jeanette Winterson and collaborate on the idea of displacement. Lastly, she is bringing back 2012’s Walking Mad, set to Ravel’s “Bolero”, offering impassioned viewers and veteran dancers the chance to experience Johan Inger’s riotous romp anew. “It is a gift to be able to do Walking Mad at all in your career, so to be able to revisit it is really exciting,” shares dancer Mikaila Wallace, who’s engaging in, perhaps, her most bittersweet performance. “It’s been a wonderful almost 11 years with Mikaila,” explains Molnar, fondly. “She’s at a transition point in her life where she wants to explore having a family or retraining for something else. than 30 professional theatre awards, three national tours, and eight full-length original works. Much has changed in the Vancouver theatre scene since Ruby Slippers Theatre began. So how has the company weathered the continually changing landscape while others have fallen by the wayside? “We’re good at what we do and believe in what we do and stay on top of what’s going on in the world and what’s going on in the theatre world, and we do what we have to do to remain valid to our community,” said Brown. This includes open rehearsals, mentoring students, and programming work that excites the community. Ruby Slippers Theatre kicks off its 25th season October 25 with Daniel MacIvor’s Communion. MacIvor’s been a favourite of the company for years; his A Beautiful View was a hit for the company in 2009. “Nobody writes women characters like Daniel MacIvor,” said Brown. Communion runs at Pacific Theatre until November 9. Although the company’s name was not intended to conjure images of Dorothy’s journey down the yellow brick road (“We don’t want people to think we’re doing kids’ theatre”), there’s a lot that Brown has learned from Miss Gale’s well-documented adventures regardless. “She’s a hero, and she saves all of these guys from their miserable lots in life because she has the courage, the heart and the brains to pull it off,” said Brown.

f Dorothy Gale from The Wizard of Oz had launched a Kansas theatre company after her adventures over the rainbow, it probably would have looked a lot like Ruby Slippers Theatre. That’s what artistic director Diane Brown likes to think, anyway. Dorothy was at the top of her mind when Brown co-founded the Vancouver-based independent theatre company exactly 25 years ago; more specifically, she was inspired by Dorothy’s iconic, sparkly, technicolour shoes. “They were very beautiful, empowering for women, magical, and whimsical,”Brown says. “They took you on great adventures.” Ruby Slippers Theatre was born in 1989 as an interdisciplinary collective. (“Our mission was to change the world. I say that with a smile on my face; we wanted to do interdisciplinary work that we weren’t seeing around us.”) Looking back, Brown admits the original model wasn’t sustainable. pponents of wireless smart meters are vowing to continue their fight against BC Hydro after the BC Utilities Commission granted interim approval of extra fees that will be charged to holdouts. Regulators have set out a threemonth process to consider the grounds for the fees, which the province has mandated by cabinet order to recoup millions of dollars in extra costs to accommodate customers who opt not to have a wireless meter. The utilities commission can’t scrap the fees, but it could decide they’re too high and order Hydro to lower them and refund the difference. Sharon Noble of the Coalition to Stop Smart Meters said opponents have registered for intervenor status

and will urge the commission to delay implementation of the fees while a class action lawsuit against Hydro is before the courts. About 60,000 households that have refused wireless smart meters have been notified of the pending fees. They’ll pay $35 a month extra starting Dec. 1 if they opt to keep their mechanical meter or if they fail to make a choice, as it’s the default option. They can instead switch to a smart meter with the radio transmitter disabled for a $100 setup fee plus $20 a month for manual readings. Holdouts who keep their old meter or go transmitter off but who later move to a new home that already has a wireless smart meter will be able to get its transmitter turned off for a further $155 one-time fee. Also approved is a “failed installation” fee effective Oct. 25 that charges customers $65 each time technicians are turned away or obstructed from accessing a household’s meter.

A fun, but superficial, sex comedy Starring Mark Ruffalo, Gwyneth Paltrow Directed by Stuart Blumberg Addiction comedies can be tricky; struggling with personal demons is typically tough terrain in which to find humour and throwing in some romantic entanglements can further dilute the weighty material. Stuart Blumberg’s Thanks For Sharing is a mostly effective yarn that, while sweet and funny, doesn’t have a truly lasting effect. The plot focuses on three sex addicts in group therapy, each with a distinct story Thor Diakow to tell — Mark Ruffalo is a bachelor facing one hell of a dry spell, Tim Robbins is a family man whose son has his own history of impulse-control issues and Josh Gad plays an ER doctor clearly in need of the most help. The characters are likeable enough, breezing through the dialogue with cleverness and care. Credit should also be given to the strong central female players, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Joely Richardson and Alecia Moore (aka pop star Pink). The film is serious when it needs to be but borders on the melodramatic at times, and is genuinely funny but loses points for cashing in on Gad’s physical comedy as he is sometimes reduced

The script succeeds in making a sensitive and often fiercely private issue accessible to mainstream audiences, hopefully tearing down some of the stigma associated with such behaviour, but also strives to cover too many issues such as alcohol and drug addiction. Thanks For Sharing could have benefited from a simpler approach to really hone in on its subject matter but is saved by some charismatic performances.

No big reveal in WikiLeaks drama THE FIFTH ESTATE Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl Directed by Bill Condon Watching The Fifth Estate stumble out of the gate and lumber about, it’s hard to believe that Bill Condon ever had a hand in big screen musicals such as Chicago and Dreamgirls. Here, the director demonstrates zero ability to imbue his narrative with a sense of rhythm and little capacity for making the script’s dialogue sing. The story of Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his WikiLeaks enterprise, this biopic kicks off with the website’s coming out party — the 2010 release of 92,000 classified documents concerning the war in Afghanistan — before cutting back two years earlier to find Assange struggling to find an audience at conferences rather than gracing the cover of Time. Finally discovering an acolyte in Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl), the Aussie anarchist sets about establishing an online plat-

form through which whistleblowers might sound alarms without fear of reprisals. In turn, Condon sets about depicting the inner workings of the web through a series of ludicrous CGI sequences unfolding in a hangar-sized office housing an infinite number of desks. Such visual analogies embarrassingly recall Senator Ted Stevens’ infamous assertion that the internet is a series of tubes. Their techno-dystopia sheen likewise suggests that Condon has only now gotten around to watching that Matrix movie that all the kids are talking about. Such criticisms may seem like nitpicking but the reality is that Condon’s film offers nothing meatier to dig into. Revolutionary activism is conveyed through clichéd means and one of the most complex, contentious figures to recently grab headlines is reduced to an elementary collection of tics and glowers tailor-made for a universally acclaimed performance by Cumberbatch. — Curtis Woloschuk
