Greenpeace has plenty of experience throwing a protest. In more than 40 years of environmental activism, members of the international organization have sailed ships into stormy waters to stop whaling, scaled landmarks, buildings and bridges to unfurl huge banners and bring attention to their various campaigns. They account for every contingency; protestors wear
appropriate safety equipment, sites are chosen for maximum visibility, spokespeople are available to tell their story. But one thing a group of 16 Greenpeace activists who infiltrated Kinder Morgan’s Westridge terminal in North Burnaby early Wednesday morning didn’t plan for was the fog. As two protestors, Keith Stewart and Benjamin Zielinski, sat on the cold, dewy pavement chained to the terminal’s main entrance gate, the

rest of their colleagues scaled the facility’s two huge storage tanks to unfurl banners and paint a message, while others attached themselves to equipment like the main pumping station that moves crude oil that has traveled through Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline from Alberta to tankers in Burrard Inlet. The only problem was, for most of the morning nobody could see them as the inlet was shrouded in heavy fog. 4x1.25_book_drive_ad_final.pdf The activists entered the facility in
the pre-dawn, said Stewart, to “send a message to the Prime Minister and Premier [Christy] Clark that the coast is not for sale.” The group is against efforts by Kinder Morgan and another company, Enbridge, to expand their pipelines through British Columbia to ship Alberta crude oil to markets overseas. The protest was timed to coincide with Wednesday’s Speech from the Throne in Ottawa to open Parliament, said1:20 Stewart. 1 12-03-05 PM Please see GreeNpeAce prOteSt, A3

A family and coach are calling for an increased focus on safety and preventing head injuries after a Burnaby teen suffered his third soccer-related concussion last month. Burnaby Selects under-16 goalkeeper Jayden Maharaj, 15, was playing in a match against SurreyGuildford United on Sept. 28 “A low cross came in and I went to pick it up and I had it in my hands and a few seconds later a player on the other team ran into me.” The other player was bigger and his shoulder went into Jayden’s head, twisting him around. “It was a dirty tackle, it should’ve been a red card but it was only given a yellow.” Jayden recalled after being hit he couldn’t move and was having trouble opening his eyes and keeping them open. He couldn’t stand up on his own and was walked off the field after a few minutes. “My mind was just racing even though my body was motionless,” he said of those first moments after the hit. “I was just scared because I knew this might be the one that might end my career.” It was Jayden’s fourth concussion. see behAvIOur, A3

Behaviour in soccer a ‘collective responsibility’ ⫸

The first was from a biking incident at age 10, but the rest have come in the past year-and-ahalf on the soccer field. The third one happened in May when the ball was kicked hard enough from only 10 feet away that it struck him in the head, knocking it back. That incident caused him to miss the rest of the school year, and he only completed Grade 9 with the support of his teachers at Alpha secondary and the staff at G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre, said his mom, Shashi Maharaj. He was cleared to play again in August. Shashi believes the most recent concussion could have been prevented if players were taught a greater respect for players and the game. Jayden and his teammates know that once a save is made, the play stops. “It seemed unnecessary,” she said. “This sort of injury could have lifetime effects.” She wants the BC Soccer Association to mandate injury prevention as a priority, and to educate players, teams and coaches about the dangers of head injuries. “Basically I want them to be

As for stricter refereeing, he said it needs to be done on the merits of each incident. “I got one [red card] playing when I was younger, and that taught me a lesson, I never got another one in my life. There will be some people who will get 10 red cards and they’ll continue into adult play and they don’t learn their lesson.” Behaviour in youth soccer is a “collective responsibility,” Mullen stressed. Coaches need to instill respect for officials and opposition players and parents need to teach the importance of fair play. As for Jayden, he said there’s little he can do to treat his concussion apart from resting. It’s too early to determine whether he’ll be able to play soccer again, but right now his main priority is to return to school. As for life without soccer, it’s difficult for him to think about. His goal was to play professionally and even if that didn’t happen, he wanted to use soccer to get a scholarship to college or university. “When I looked at my goals in life, basically all of them revolved around soccer … If I’m not able to play it’s going to have to make me rethink a lot of things.”
Greenpeace protest aimed to send a message ⫸

The operation to get into the terminal past locked electric gates and security guards went “pretty quick,” said Stewart. A van with a locking boot was even left in front of a secondary entrance to block alternate access to the terminal. But for hours what was transpiring in the terminal
was anybody’s guess. RCMP officers gathered and stood by patiently as media and a handful of Greenpeace organizers and supporters peered into the thick grey mist to see if they could discern any orange jumpsuitclad figures clambering over equipment beyond the locked front gate. Even Kinder Morgan officials
adopted a wait-and-see approach. “Our number one concern is for the safety of the public, the protestors and our employees as well as our neighbours and the larger community,” said the company’s director of external relations Andrew Galarnyk in a statement. “We respect the rights of protestors to advance their
cause but in this case we are very concerned about this trespass and disturbance at the Westridge marine terminal.” Galarnyk said the protest had minimal impact on the terminal’s operations. No ships were scheduled to dock at the terminal Wednesday, and there were no planned deliveries of jet fuel, which is also stored there, to
Vancouver airport. That was by design to ensure the safety of the protestors, said Stephanie Goodwin, the BC director of Greenpeace. She said the group would stay “as long as it takes” to convey their message. But for that to happen Mother Nature needed to cooperate and burn off the fog.

The fact is that MOVEMENT is the key to remaining healthy. ADRIAN RAESIDE:
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Simply ‘breathe’ School zones should be quiet oases where children can walk safely without fear of being tomorrow’s headline. In fact, school zones during morning drop-off are some of the biggest danger areas, worse than mall parking lots during the Christmas rush. This past week, school authorities, IWALK, Dash BC, TransLink and ICBC worked on various campaigns, including prizes, to promote more children walking to school during International Walk To School Week. It was a feel-good exercise. But the fact remains many kids never walk to school, and a campaign like this doesn’t accomplish that much. Kids get driven to school every day for a variety of reasons: convenience or lack of time; parents’ fears for their children’s safety; or because their child attends a program of choice outside their catchment area. While it would be nice if more people walked their kids to school or neighbourhood “walking school buses” got kids to school safely, the fact remains cars are still a popular form of transportation and school zones are congested and dangerous. What’s needed is not prizes for kids but more awareness for parents, some of whom take great risks — and put other children at risk — when they drop off their kids. Sometimes, it’s not even the fault of parents that school zones are dangerous but the fact these zones are poorly planned because they were built when most kids did walk to school. Maybe it’s time for some more lasting solutions. Where possible, schools need proper pick up/dropoff zones. Children old enough to do so should be encouraged to walk if they’re close enough—especially if they have a buddy or two to walk with. And maybe the best solution is for all of us is to have a little more patience. A sign, perhaps, as you enter the school zone, saying simply: “breathe.”

Toll avoidance unavoidable On the front of a Vancouver daily last week, the headline screamed “TOLL THEM ALL?” in question to a call by various municipalities, and I’m sure a pile of bike riders throughout Metro Vancouver, to toll all bridges and roads in the region. All well and good I say, so long as the cyclists pay the same toll as motor vehicles. After all, their use of road infrastructure is equal to that of a car, albeit with a considerably lighter footprint. However, the motorist and all commercial and service vehicles which supply food and other products, already pay a hefty premium to use Metro’s roads and bridges – more than 45 cents per litre in fuel taxes alone. However, I’m not here to battle bicycle use (I think our fall/ winter/spring weather does that nicely enough), rather I question why motorists are singled out as the seemingly only source of revenue to provide rapid transit. If I want a new car or truck, I have to buy it, and pay for its operation.
Mark Rushton Thus, should not transit users be required to pony up the funds necessary – spread over countless years, based on “affordable” fares – to provide their rides? If you want transit then you should be willing, or required as drivers are through gas taxes, to pay a rider fee that contributes not only to the operation, but acquisition, of the transit vehicles. After all, drivers are already contributing for something they’re not using, so why shouldn’t those actually using transit pay a substantial fee as well? The argument of course, is that the aim of transit is to get people out of cars. For many that works when there is transit available. Back almost half a century ago, I lived in Vancouver’s West End.

I had a car, and it stayed parked most of the time because it was quicker, easier and far cheaper to either walk, take a cab or ride the bus. Most trips were no more than a few blocks, and finding a parking spot on the street was then, and still is today, akin to locating the proverbial needle in a haystack. Let’s also be clear, I’m not against tolls or transit. I don’t mind contributing to the new Port Mann (though fortunately I rarely cross it), and I do remember tolls on the Lion’s Gate and (then) Deas Island Tunnel. And for anyone who has travelled to the central Interior, who can forget the $10 tab to cross the Coquihalla. What I have learned, and Surrey/New Westminster is learning on the Patullo Bridge, is that people will do their damnedest to avoid paying tolls. The Coq is a prime example, where often you would see fourwheelers pull off at the Falls Lake exit, traverse the pipeline route and, circuitously, bypass the toll booths.

On the southeast side, enterprising drivers with time to spare could also divert well before the Great Bear Snowshed onto the long abandoned KVR right-of-way and eventually emerge at Coquihalla Lakes just north of the toll plaza. A long, arduous but extremely scenic way of tax avoidance. How do I know? Because I took both routes on a number of occasions, not so much because I couldn’t afford the fee but as a matter of principle. Back then, I didn’t value time as much as I do now. People will try to circumnavigate tolling stations, which means that all those wellmeaning, but money-grabbing, Metro municipal politicians who want “tolls on everything” may find their residential streets clogged with frustrated commuters who already believe they are contributing enough “to the greater good.” Mark Rushton is a columnist for the Abbotsford News

School district eyes new school on mountain Meantime, top priority is new elementary in Brentwood area Wanda Chow

Burnaby Mountain could one day get a second elementary school if the school district gets its way. Such a school to join University Highlands elementary up by Simon Fraser University is sixth on the Burnaby school district’s wish list of capital projects which was recently submitted the education ministry. It was always in the plans to have two elementaries to serve the growing UniverCity residential development as well as the children of staff and faculty at SFU, said district secretary-treasurer Greg Frank. NDP call for more accountable Parliament
Wanda Chow
wchow@burnabynewsleader.com
The federal New Democrats are proposing new measures to make Parliament more accountable. It proposes prohibiting parliamentarians from sitting on the boards of corporations, banning payment for work that is part of an MP or senator’s work, such as giving speeches, and enshrining ethics rules into law and giving the ethics commissioner the power to penalize those who break the rules. Burnaby-New Westminster NDP MP Peter Julian said such ethical breaches take place “regularly” among MPs and senators. “We’ve got dozens of senators that are on corporate boards,” Julian said, noting the NDP is talking about abolishing the senate which is “a mess.” In the meantime,

the first step to make it more accountable is to say, “no you can’t be on corporate boards when you’re supposedly doing the people’s business,” he said, adding it would not affect those involved in their own family businesses. There are also a few MPs in this situation, he said. But “it’s mainly senators that are sitting on corporate boards while they’re voting on legislation that often impacts those same companies.” The proposed rule about double-dipping comes out of issues such as Liberal leader Justin Trudeau charging for speaking engagements while already being paid as an MP. “I’ve always refused to accept any money for any speeches I give because taxpayers already pay my salary,” said Julian, who added there have even been a few examples of MPs who have accepted payment for doing casework, one of the regular duties of an MP. The third proposal would be to give the ethics commissioner

The NDP is proposing fines of $5,000 to $10,000 for infractions so “you couldn’t just treat the whole issue of ethics with impunity.” While the fines may seem on the lower end, it would be a start. “This would represent a sea change and I think most Canadians think they would be very reasonable proposals.

Pirate House raises funds for Uganda
ROB MICKELBERRY’S JOURNEY TO THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY After nearly a year travelling on a “rock star” bus from one end of North America to another, Rob Mickelberry, his wife and three children were ready to re-establish permanent roots back home in Victoria. “We bought a property while we were on the road,” says Rob, “then lived in the old house while we sub-divided the lot and built a new home that would be ours.” Because Rob wanted the home – completed in May 2013 – “for the long haul,”
Rob Mickelberry
he was determined it would not cost a fortune to run. By calling in certified energy advisors City Green Solutions early in the design process, Rob was able to build-in a number of refinements – including an air source heat pump, triple glazing, a heat recovery ventilation system and extra insulation – that resulted in the home achieving a remarkable EnerGuide 88 rating from Natural Resources Canada. That makes it, says Mike Young of City Green, “approximately 59 per cent more energy efficient than if this home had been built to BC Building Code standards.” It will also save Rob an estimated $1,500 to $1,800 a year on his energy bills. Icing on the cake: the high EnerGuide rating also qualified Rob for $2,000 in incentives from the BC Hydro Power Smart New Home Program, and he’s eligible for the ENERGY STAR® Package incentive of $150 per home for installing qualified energy-efficient lighting and appliances. To find out more about buying or building a Power Smart new home, please visit bchydro.com/pshome.

Pirates may be the scourge of the high seas. But a band of benevolent Burnaby pirates will be trying to scare up some good for a school in Uganda this Halloween. The Pirate House, at 5970 Portland St., will lower its gangplank to the general public on Thursday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. to raise money to build a roof on the St. Stephen’s Children’s Centre in Uganda. The house includes a pirate ship, a graveyard of dishonourable pirates, shrines to honourable ones, as well as a treasure hunt. It’s the creation of “Captain” Julie Desroches with help from scalawags and scoundrels from as far away as Fort St. John, Montreal and Switzerland. Most of the decorations are hand-made using recycled material. Donations collected at the Pirate House will go to a GoFundMe campaign launched by Desroches to raise $2,500 to erect a roof on the school’s nursery classroom. “They can’t use their new nursery classroom complex without a roof,” said Desroches. “The sun is too hot during the dry season and it’s too wet during the rainy season, so the students must all cram into the primary classrooms or sit outside under the protection of the trees.” For more information about the Pirate House, go to www.piratehouse.ca

When Evangeli Anteros’ family emigrated from Kenya nine years ago, she’d never bounced a basketball, spiked a volleyball or run on a track. But the opportunities created by participating in those sports and others helped propel her to university and fueled her ambition to help kids around the world realize the same kinds of possibilities. Within a few days of her family’s arrival in Burnaby, Anteros was plopped into the fifth grade at Edmonds community school. She didn’t speak English, she didn’t know anybody. “Everything was different,” says Anteros, who’s originally from South Sudan. “It took me some time to adjust to my new environment.” Part of that adjustment was made easier when she joined the school’s track and field team, she says. “My experience with the team was outstanding. I have always been a very shy person, and joining sports teams helped a lot to be able to communicate with people. I made a few good friends.” The next year, she

joined the basketball team even though she’d never played the game, and didn’t know anything about it. But with the help of her coaches, she learned the rules, the strategies, and how to play. “I loved everything about it, the friends I made, the people cheering me on and telling me I was good,” says Anteros. “I received a lot of attention doing something I loved.” But playing competitive sports often comes with a price. There’s equipment to buy, registration fees to pay, expenses for trips to out-of-town tournaments. As Anteros’ family continued to find its way in their new country, keeping up with expenses wasn’t easy. That’s where organizations like KidSport Burnaby are able to step in to help. Partnering with companies like Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program they provide awards of up to $200 to local kids to be able to participate in sports activities. “With the cost of living so high in Burnaby, many families don’t have the extra funds to pay for their
son or daughter to participate in sport,” says Lawrence Ryan, the chair of KidSport Burnaby. “Sport has so many benefits for children including the benefits of physical health and healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Sport builds personal skills including leadership, decision making, critical thinking, hard work, dedication and self-confidence.” Anteros says the things she learned playing basketball, volleyball, track and field, netball and soccer, and traveling to other provinces with the B.C. under-15 basketball team also helped her keep her focus in school and opened the door for her to be able to pursue post-secondary studies. “Coming from a poor family, the only way I could afford further education after high school would be to take time off and work to make enough money before I attend university,” says Anteros, who elected to accept a full basketball scholarship at Concordia University in Montreal after her high school playing career at Byrne Creek secondary school ended. “That is exactly why KidSport was created,”
says Ryan, who’s also an educator. “We want kids to have the opportunity to pursue their dreams not only in sport but in life.” For Anteros, those dreams include being able to work toward a degree in psychology and eventually to pass on the positive guidance and mentorship she’s received from coaches, supporters and teammates to other youth who have to overcome barriers to be able to play sports. “I enjoy helping others because so many people spent their time helping me,” says Anteros, whose playing career has been temporarily sidelined by a knee injury that required surgery. “I’m very confident, focused and determined. Playing sports taught me that anything is possible.” That’s like a slam dunk for groups like KidSport and the Jumpstart program. “Sport is of benefit to all of us,” says Ryan. “We know that not every child will be a superstar at their sport, but they can gain the self-esteem and the work ethic that will help them shine in life.” Anteros says she knows she wouldn’t be studying in Montreal, and plotting a future of endless possibilities, without the help she got from the sidelines. “Playing basketball had a huge effect on the person I am today,” says Anteros. “I have been very lucky and I’m very thankful for the amazing people who have been there for me. Without them I don’t know where I would be.” • KidSport Burnaby www. kidsportburnaby. com • Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart jumpstart. canadiantire.ca

ne of the wonderful things about working at the Shadbolt Centre with its large windows and location in Deer Lake Park is that you witness nature, live, every day.
And while each of the changing seasons brings a different visual experience to the park I think it’s the fall foliage that is the most spectacular. Over the last couple of weeks or so the colours of the maple trees along Deer Lake Avenue have transformed to bright crimson. This magnificent change in colour is a result of a process the trees undertake as the season changes, which is enhanced by the recently sunny days and the crisp cool nights. Just as the trees are preparing for winter, we too begin to change our patterns and look for things and activities to do indoors as the days become shorter and shorter. With a theatre performance
Geraldine Parent season that is filled with music, theatre and dance the Shadbolt Centre offers ample opportunity to stay warm and indoors on those cooler fall nights. Canadian pop/rock singer-songwriter Emm Gryner opens the Lounge music series on Nov. 1. With three Juno nominations and 10 albums to her credit along with her own label Dead Daisy Records, Gryner has forged both her own path and sound, performing around the world as a solo artist. Gryner recently provided the piano arrangement for Canadian astronaut Cmdr. Chris Hadfield’s music video Space Oddity — a YouTube sensation. An evening performance you
won’t want to miss, tickets for Emm Gryner are available at shadboltcentre.com or 604-2053000. Buy them in advance and save. As a side note, back in August I told you about the tap dance class I was registering for at the Shadbolt. Having now attended four classes, I must say I am enjoying the instructor, the group of women participating, and the laughter. What I didn’t expect was the new language I was to learn and how much my brain would be challenged remembering the names of the various steps and translating them to my feet. With so many things to do at the Shadbolt Centre and in the surrounding park area, why don’t you come on by and check us out, or visit us online at shadboltcentre.com. Geraldine Parent is the arts services manager at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

Marcon’s Regan’s Walk features modern urban living By Kerry Vital
Marcon is continuing its reputation as one of British Columbia’s most respected developers with Regan’s Walk, a collection of 71 condominium homes in Coquitlam that are perfect for those searching for a modern urban lifestyle. The homes at Regan’s Walk are available in a variety of one-, two- and three-bedroom plans, ranging from 509 to 1,125 square feet. Nine-foot ceilings contribute to a spacious
feel, enhanced by the abundance of natural light. Wide-plank laminate flooring is featured throughout the living areas, with modern scrolled level-loop nylon carpeting in the bedrooms. The kitchens are perfect for any aspiring gourmet, with their stainless-steel appliances and full-height pantries with built-in microwaves and a USB charging station (in select homes). The thermafoil cabinets are contemporary and distinctive, with Shaker 42” Euro White uppers and eased edge square-profile lower cabinets in either Covaren Crystal or Miltown Oak. The

cabinets are complemented by a full-height hand-set stacked tile backsplash and solid quartz countertops. Meanwhile, the bathrooms are relaxing and elegant, with their own Euro White Shaker cabinets and a deep soaker tub. You’ll also find solid quartz countertops in the ensuite bathroom, complemented by a full-height tile tub and shower surround and a forged steel-framed mirror with brushed steel accent light bar to perfectly illuminate your morning routine. Every home includes a generous patio or terrace, extending the living space outdoors and perfect for entertaining or relaxing. Woodbridge Homes’ Salix features Georgian-style architecture, with red brick accents and styled ironwork, above. The homes are spacious and inviting, with wood laminate flooring and large windows to let the natural light pour in, above right.
Sophisticated style at Woodbridge’s Salix in Surrey By Kerry Vital
Style reigns supreme at Salix, Woodbridge Homes’ condominium project in Surrey’s Clayton Heights neighbourhood that combines gorgeous homes and a great location in one amazing package. “The value we’re presenting here is really unmatched,” says sales manager Rob Carlsen. “You’re going to have a well-built home that

YOU WOULD DO! GET VOTES & WIN!
you’ll enjoy for years to come.” Stylish elegance is the name of the game at Salix, with its Georgian-inspired architecture. Red brick and styled ironwork combine with the craftsman woodwork accents to make for a chic entrance to the four-storey building. Woodbridge is now selling the final homes in the project. Most are two-bedroom and two-bedroom-and-den plans, but Carlsen says there’s still a wide variety, with six different plans to choose from. “Now is really the time to buy,” he says, adding that Salix recently opened up their new model home. When it comes to finishings, buyers have two different interior design schemes to choose from: one contemporary and one traditional. The contemporary scheme (called Sallow) feature stone countertops and chic
white satin flat panel upper cabinets and dark laminate flat panel lower cabinets, complemented by a modern stainless-steel feature hood fan in the kitchen. Meanwhile, the traditional scheme (called Willow) includes elegant granite countertops and Victorian cabinetry in a dark wood, with its own custom Broan hood fan. “Our unique finishings really stand above the crowd,” Carlsen says. Both options feature stainless-steel appliances and under-cabinet lighting, along with spacious bathrooms with walk-in showers surrounded by ceramic tile and welllit large vanity mirrors. Storage space abounds at Salix, and purchasers now have the opportunity to upgrade to a huge storage locker as part of the new incentive package offered by the
developer. The views from the homes at Salix are spectacular, with some facing Mount Baker. Oversized windows let the natural light pour in, and you can easily imagine spending your evenings on your private patio or balcony. Nine-foot ceilings (10 feet on the top and ground floors) contribute to the overall feeling of spaciousness. Salix is perfectly located in the Clayton Heights area to take advantage of all its amenities, from shopping and dining at Willowbrook Shopping Centre to schools, leisure and recreation opportunities in the neighbourhood itself. “I feel really good about the value we’re providing to purchasers,” Carlsen says. “It’s a small, quiet building in a prime location.” Woodbridge is also offering a $10,000 incentive package right now to buyers, who can put that money towards upgrades on their home. “It’s a gift from the builder to our buyers,” says Carlsen. “It’s an amazing value at our price point.” Homes at Salix start at $219,900, and you can move in this fall. For more information, visit www.salixliving.com, call 604-5300054 or visit the presentation centre at 6477 196th Street, Surrey, open daily except Friday between noon and 5 p.m.
