Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre celebrates National Fire Prevention Week On Oct. 10, the 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue fire truck visited the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC). Fire chief Darrell Blades made a presentation on kitchen fire safety to the moms and dads at the Prenatal/Infant Toddler Group at 11 a.m. Children got to check out the fire truck and participated in fire safety activities. All of the parents left with a free smoke detector donated by 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue. Children got an activity book highlighting
fire safety, and there was a draw for seven kitchen fire extinguishers. Cooking equipment is involved in roughly 150,000 home fires each year in Canada. Many of these fires start because people aren’t paying attention. Kitchen safety checklist • Does a grown-up always pay attention to things that are cooking? • Does a grown-up watch the stovetop when he or she is frying, grilling, or broiling food?

• If a grown-up must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, do they turn off the stove? • Are things that can burn – dish towels, curtains, or paper – at least three feet away from the stove? • Is the top of the stove clean – no spilled food, grease, paper or bags? • Are pot handles turned in towards the back of the stove when a grown-up is cooking? • Do children and pets stay out of the “kid free” zone (three feet from the stove) when a grown-up
is cooking? • Are containers opened slowly after they are removed from the microwave, as hot steam escaping from the container can cause painful burns? • Is the fire department’s emergency number near the phone? • Does your family have working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan? Check out www.sparky.org for more fire prevention information. Checklist provided by the National Fire Protection Association.

The South Cariboo Food Security Committee’s (SCFSC) first gleaning event at Paul and Cindy Whitehead’s farm near Forest Grove was a great success. Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers’ fields, SCFSC chair Lisa De Paoli says, adding it is a community and work-centred activity – a social safety net for those in need. On Oct. 3, an enthusiastic group of volunteers harvested 450 pounds of potatoes, 60 pounds of beets, 40 pounds of carrots, and 30 pounds of cabbage in just two hours. Many thanks go to Whiteheads for donating extra produce from their garden to support vulnerable families throughout this winter. Thanks also go to Rod and Ann Granger for providing storage in their root cellar. Thanks are extended to all of the volunteers: Debbra Williams, Rod McDonald, Chris Pettman, Ava Pettman, Sylvia Peniuk, Noella Andrews, Bruce Madu, Gordon Hoglund, Mary Jeffery, Rusty Martin, and Cindy and Paul Whitehead. We hope to have many more gleaning events next year, says SCFSC vice-chair Rita Giesbrecht. The committee meets every second Thursday of the month from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Please contact De
REGULAR ADMISSION
Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth... and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space. In the words of coach Al Navrot, the Lac la Hache Tomahawks shed a monkey off their back with a 6-2 victory over the Quesnel Kangaroos on Oct. 12. The win is the first in 14 games for the senior men’s hockey team going back to last season. “A lot of those games were one-goal games,” Navrot explains. “We’d play well enough to win; we just had no luck. We were happy for sure to get a monkey off our back.” Tied 2-2 midway through the third period, Lac la Hache’s Ellery Brigham and Quesnel’s Corey Petrie dropped their gloves for a fight and earned matching game misconduct penalties. The fight seemed to energize the Tomahawks – or rattle that monkey some – and the goals started pouring in. Robin Gilbert, Kevin McNab, Donovan Nicholas and Wilfred Robbins all scored in the last 10 minutes of the third period putting the game out of reach for Quesnel. “We just started pumping them in and Quesnel started taking penalties. It’s good because the younger guys will get a chance to deal with the pressure, which helps them develop. “We want to build for the end of the year and the playoffs. That’s what our goal is.”

Smoking, kitchen fires leading causes of blazes
By Tom Fletcher Black Press
Completion of BC Hydro’s smart meter program has coincided with a continued decline in electrical fires in the province, according to a new analysis of records from the B.C. Office of the Fire Commissioner. Surrey fire chief Len Garis has been tracking residential fire statistics since 2010, for his work as adjunct professor of criminology at the University of the Fraser Valley. After successfully pushing for a 2006 law allowing fire departments to find indoor marijuana grow operations by their electrical usage, Garis has continued to assess the effects of BC Hydro’s smart grid program on preventing fires. Adding another year of fire statistics, from June 2012 to June 2013, shows a continued decline in electrical fires, including those related to illegal electrical bypasses and hot grow lamps found to be connected with illegal marijuana growing. Garis noted the data show electrical fires of all sorts account for only a small part of all structure fires in British Columbia. Out of 1,801 total residential fires in the latest year available, 150 were found to be caused by electrical discharge. That’s a 12.3 per cent decline since 2011,
Evan Seal/Black Press
Forget smart meters, check your smoke detector, says Surrey fire chief Len Garis. Nearly 80 per cent of people who die in fires don’t have a working smoke alarm. The total number of smart meter-related fires in British Columbia remains at zero.
when the smart meter program began. The reports show that over three years, only one fire originated on an exterior wall, ignited by an electrical panel board. That was in 2011, before smart meter installation began. There have been no fires attributed to the meter program, with 1.8 million wireless meters installed. Fires caused by illegal meter bypasses dropped from eight in 2011 to six in 2012 to only three in 2013. BC Hydro has
reported that installers located and removed illegal bypasses around the province as part of the smart meter program, and also replaced 1,200 meter bases found to be faulty. Garis said the results clearly show people should not worry about their electrical meters, and pay attention to by far the largest sources of house fires: cooking and smoking. The statistics show that cooking-related fires are on the increase, even as total residential fires
have declined in B.C. Of 1,998 total fires reported in 2011, 575 were ignited by cooking equipment. In 2013, total fires declined to 1,801, but the number of cooking fires rose to 621. Fires caused by smoking declined by 11 per cent for 2013, but there were still 302 fires ignited by smoking materials. Garis said the statistic of most concern is that 79 per cent of people who died in fires, whatever the source, were in a home without a working smoke detector.
FireSmart property this fall When the weather gets cooler and the days get shorter, it’s a signal to begin fall yard cleanup. When cleaning up your yard this year, take time to assess how FireSmart your property is by consulting the Home Owners FireSmart Manual at www.embc. gov.bc.ca/ofc/interface/pdf/ homeowner-firesmart.pdf. A wildfire can produce sparks or burning debris that can travel up to two kilometres ahead of the fire. If you live in or near a wildland-urban interface area, you can lower the risk these sparks or debris can pose to your home by ensuring that the three priority zones identified in the FireSmart Manual have been maintained.
To begin with, remove fuels from the first 10 metres around your home. This includes dead grass and leaves as well as overhanging branches. If you are going to plant shrubs or trees in this zone, consider deciduous trees because they burn less readily than coniferous trees. For example, aspen, poplar and birch all have very low flammability rates. From 10 to 30 metres, you can reduce fuels by thinning and pruning so combustion will not be supported. Space the trees so the crowns (tops) of individual trees are three to six metres apart. Fires spreads more easily uphill, so it is important to extend the
second priority zone precautions farther on downhill slopes. The third priority zone, from 30 to 100 metres around your home, should have the trees and shrubs thinned so that if a fire occurs it will be of lower intensity. Reducing the fuel will also provide a zone that is safer for fire crews to work from. Properly preparing your home and community doesn’t guarantee that you will not incur fire damage, but it does reduce the risks. These are simple steps that anyone can take to create a more FireSmart home, community or business site. But for these actions to be effective, they must be maintained.

Protect yourself, get immunized
In the last 50 years, immunization has saved more lives in Canada than any other health intervention, according to Interior Health (IH). When most people are vaccinated for a disease, it makes it harder for that disease to spread from person to person. When people stop immunizing, diseases come back and that becomes especially risky for those who may be more vulnerable, such as young children, seniors, and people with certain medical conditions or compromised immune systems. “This year, we saw an increase in cases of whooping cough (pertussis) here in Interior Health and some parts of our province experienced significant outbreaks,” says Dr. Rob Parker, IH medical health officer. “This is an important reminder that we need to keep our immunization rates high to help prevent outbreaks like this from happening. “Vaccines don’t just prevent diseases; they also reduce the possibility of serious complications or death associated with vaccinepreventable diseases. Mumps, measles, and rubella viruses can lead to potentially deadly complications like pneumonia and encephalitis. Whooping cough and meningitis C bacteria can cause brain damage or death,” explained Dr. Parker. “The main side-effects associated with getting vaccines are minor and temporary, such as a sore arm or
Get cted! ne Con
mild fever. The likelihood of having a serious side-effect from a vaccine is extremely small. The benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks.” Factual vaccine information can help people make informed decisions about their health and the health of their families, Dr. Parker says, adding it is important to make sure you get vaccine information from reliable and credible sources. The ImmunizeBC website (www.immu nizeBC.ca), or local public health nurse are excellent sources of information about vaccinations.

We’re now
consulting with one of TRU’s biggest influencers:
YOU.
President and Vice-Chancellor
T
hompson Rivers University. This place, this idea, this access point to excellence is something to which we are both connected – and that is why I am asking you to join me in shaping its future. We have started the process to determine TRU’s Strategic Priorities for the next five years. Until Dec. 31st, we will be reaching out to thousands of people, close to home and in the far reaches of the globe, to get their thoughts. Now, I’d like to get your thoughts. Please fill out the survey we have prepared, at tru.ca/strategicpriorities.ca. There will be other opportunities to share your thoughts, and our website will keep you apprised of all the important dates and updates.
