B.C. prepares for earthquake

The East Kootenay is at risk of a magnitude five earthquake; schools and businesses across the province prepare SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff

Schools and businesses in Cranbrook took part in a province-wide earthquake drill on Thursday, October 17 at 11:17 a.m. The Great British Columbia ShakeOut saw almost 700,000 people across the province practice what to do if an earthquake hits. Participants in the ShakeOut dropped to their hands and knees, covered their head and neck under a sturdy table or desk, and held on for 60 seconds to prepare for a real earthquake. The Pacific Coast of B.C. is the most earthquake prone region in Canada, hit by about 1,000 earthquakes a year. In the last 70 years, the offshore

region to the west of Vancouver Island has had more than 100 earthquakes of magnitude five or greater. Over in the East Kootenay, the risk is not as great, but our region can still experience strong earthquakes, according to Alison Bird, an earthquake seismologist with Earthquakes Canada. “This is a region that can see damaging earthquakes. You have moderate to low hazard – you are much safer compared to those of us who are living on the west coast of B.C. – but there is still a chance of magnitude 5, even possibly magnitude 6, although that would be a very infrequent event,” said Bird.

Local tech start-ups pitch their services

Entrepreneurs get one minute to sell ideas to technology minister at KRIC event ARNE PETRYSHEN Townsman Staff

Promising local technology start-ups put forward their best pitches in front of the province’s Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services Wednesday at the Royal Alexandra Hall. The start-ups had only one minute to pitch their company or business idea to Minister Andrew Wilkinson and other judges, as part of a Kootenay Rockies Innovation Council (KRIC) event. KRIC is a non-profit which provides programs and events targeted at the science, technology and innovation business community. With a dinner for two on the

line, the tech-related businesses ranged from land map searches to an English-as-second-language program for babies in places like China. Paul von Wittgenstein presented his company Baby World Language which is registered in B.C. and Alberta. He said he’s spent a good part of the past 15 years in China. “We have a business that helps new mothers in non-English speaking countries to become their baby’s first English language teacher in the home,” he said. He said they have the world’s first in-womb English language learning system.

After approximately 14 years and more than 10,000 hot meals, Joel Vinge and Bud Abbott delivered the final “Meals on Wheels” on Monday October 14, 2013. The delivery program has been terminated and replaced by bulk pickup of frozen meals. As a team, Bud did the driving and Joel made the actual deliveries; he was so much better at chatting up the clients. They looked for him every week, and they will miss him.

It’s their last hurrah before the Christmas season.” Artisans will sell products that include soap and bath bombs, porcelain ornaments, honey, paintings, jewellery and baked goods. “There are little tables set up if people want to stop for a tea or coffee. A lot of shoppers do around the lunch hour,” said Henley. For the first time this year, the CFUW will be selling Cafe Feminino, a Fair Trade, organic, bird friendly coffee, owned by women. “For only $1 per cup, you will have coffee that was shipped from South American farms a few weeks ago, roasted at the Shuswap Coffee Company earlier in the week, and served to you on Saturday. You can’t get fresher than that and, at the same time, (you will) be helping third world country women farmers make their way for their families,” said Henley. It’s only a toonie to get into the bazaar, and every person through the door will be entered into the door prize bowl. “There are as many door prizes as there are artisans,” said Henley. “The artists are very generous with their products. It has been a really wonderful thing.” The bazaar showcases the talent that resides in the East Kootenay, she went on. “You really appreciate how many artists there are in the area – not just women, there are men too!” she laughed. “It’s amazing the talent in this area and the high calibre of the goods they are selling.” The bazaar raises funds for the University Women’s programs and projects in the East Kootenay, including scholarships and bursaries at Mount Baker Secondary School and College of the Rockies. Canada Europe Trade Agreement has been finalized. “I think there are some great opportunities,” he said. “What people need to recognize from a federal component that we try to create opportunities for Canadians, then the provincial, municipal and regional governments will also try to expand upon what we were trying to do.” On infrastructure, there will be $70 million invested over the next decade. “I think that all communities in the Kootenay-Columbia will be able to take advantage of that opportunity and catch up on some of the infrastructure needs that are required in the community,” he said. On the topic of small business and tourism, Wilks said he was quite happy being a small business person himself. “We’ll cut the red tape and help businesses navigate through the tax system – it can be an arduous process for a small business,” he said. The government will also introduce legislation to enshrine the one-for-one rule in law – for every new regulation added, one must be removed. “It’s a simplifying thing. Some of the forms small business owners have to fill out are time consuming. From the perspective of that alone, we’re hoping that small business owners will be able to dedicate more time to their business.” Wilks said there will be some great opportunities for the Kootenays in the mining sector. “We’re going to be able to move forward with additional mining opportunities certainly in the Elk Valley through resource development,” he said. “I think from that there will be an opportunity for the trades which will be looking to create 80,000 new jobs.”

Michael Keefer said his company, Keefer Ecological Services, brings land back to a green state following industrial disturbances. “There’s a great need with rampant development all around the world, growing human population, to bring back the land to a pre-disturbed condition that offers the values that we need in the land,” Keefer said. James Swansburg’s company Landmax creates visual searches of land maps. “We are doing what Google did with text based search,” he said, adding that this was for mapping. Chris Gallagher, from Terralogic Exploration who talked about the standardized methodology they created that reduces the sam-

Bonnie Castle-Dixon talked about Tipi Mountain Native Plants Ltd’s innovative technology for organizing seed information, germination rates and application protocols for all their species. Jana Skerlak talked about her company Bullet Point Marketing and her use of up-todate forms of online marketing and design. The winner was Steve Fisher, from Golden Environmental Matting services, who introduced himself to the minister’s table with a bottle resembling scotch that had been rebranded with his company’s logos. However any charges of bribery were quickly allayed with the

reason for the three judges’ decision. Wilkinson said that Fisher was indeed the only presenter that had brought a prop - a piece of wooden mat from his company, which has developed an accurate system for matting. Wilkinson said the other important parts of the pitch were having a good description of the product or service, as well as showing a need, a market and talking about your unique advantage compared to the competition. The event was a part of the BC Venture Acceleration program. In the East Kootenay that program is delivered through the Kootenay Rockies Innovation Council. He said there is a tendency in this province to think that exports come in large ships or on the railroad.

“But that’s actually not that accurate anymore because what we do goes out by wire or invisibly and is still a huge driver and huge employer,” said Wilkinson. He noted that 96 per cent of the businesses in the province fall into the small business category.

Discovering the Library of Dust It was horrible. That was the general consensus reached by the group touring the Oregon State Hospital in 2004. Complaints of deplorable conditions sparked the inspection by a State Senator and a handful of journalists. Originally built in 1883 (then called the Oregon State Insane Asylum), the Salem hospital appeared to have received little upkeep since then. Leaky roofs, mold-covered hallways, rooms littered with waste and exposed asbestos had rendered almost half of the hospital unusable. If not for the uncounted years of human suffering, it would make a great setting for a horror film (which it did in 1975 when ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ was filmed there). While touring the hospital grounds, photojournalist David Maisel noticed a small decaying structure which was unattached to the rest of the hospital. Wandering over to take a look, he was stopped by a series of locked doors. After acquiring a key, Maisel entered a small room, and could not believe his eyes. As he lifted his camera to document his find, he

BOOKNOTES

Mike Selby felt a chill of warm breath on the back of his neck. A patient had followed Maisel into the building. As he turned, the patient whispered four words into the startled photographer’s ear: “The Library of Dust.” Scanning the room again, Maisel realized the patient was absolutely correct. This small outbuilding certainly was a library. The walls were lined with old pine shelves, holding up thousands of items. A large handwritten catalogue laid open on a small desk positioned in the room’s center. Yet even with all these characteristics, Maisel knew this was unlike any other library he had ever encountered. It was a library of human beings.

3600 copper canisters contained the cremated ashes of patients whose bodies were never claimed by friends or family after their death. The hospital began this practice when it first opened, and this library represented 125 years of unclaimed, unwanted, or simply forgotten about people. Yet something had happened in the Library of Dust which no one counted on — and it was this which first caused Maisel to lift his camera up. The ashes in the oldest canisters had begun to chemically react with their copper containers. This caused crystal-like minerals to grow on the outside of the canisters, creating a stunning bloom of mixed colors. Maisel compared them to “the northern lights, the moons of some alien planet, or constellations in the night sky.” Some of the most beautiful ones resemble crystal blue coastal landscapes speckled with deep green islands. In 2008 Maisel published his photographs in a book he aptly named ‘Library of Dust.’ More importantly, his work brought at-

tention to the forgotten deceased, and currently 320 canisters have been claimed by living relatives. The hospital was finally torn down that same year, replaced with a modern and humane structure. The remaining unclaimed canisters were placed in protective bags and then stored in individual black boxes made for cremated remains. It is

hoped the future will see more of the deceased reunited with their families. One reviewer of Maisel’s work cautioned admirers not to be too caught up in the beauty of the photos. “It is not a library at all,” he warns. “But a room full of souls nobody wanted.” (photos of the canisters can be viewed at davidmaisel.com)

When someone asked me how I liked it, I responded ‘I am one big goose bump.’” It inspired him to create a class for high school students called “The Quest for Peace in a World of Violence.” The class would study violence and peace from the bottom up. They started with suicide and moved up to international conflict. “We would work as a class to make some contribution — however small — towards peace — here in this place and now.” He hoped he would get enough students to make a class. To his great surprise, 85 students signed up for the class as their first choice. They read classic works of literature, went on field trips to art museums to look at famous works of art dealing with the horror of violence. They visited the Crisis Intervention Centre to learn about suicide, and went to the downtown core to learn about the relationships between mental health, addictions, homelessness, poverty, and violence. They worked with the local sherriff to learn about the community initiative against violence in Baton Rouge. They visited the local prison and interview the inmates. The students “come to class each day excited. We are doing something real. We are heading into the impossible.” When I hear stories like this, I too am inspired. Every little thing each one of us does counts. Each small act of kindness is important. Each one of us can remake the world. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

JVR misses second straight game for Maple Leafs TORONTO - The details of James van Riemsdyk’s vague injury got a little bit clearer, thanks to Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. Van Riemsdyk is dealing with back spasms that are likely to cause the forward to miss his second straight game Thursday when the Carolina Hurricanes visit Air Canada Centre in Toronto. He’s considered day-to-day but there’s no specific recovery time. Carlyle had previously said he was “surprised” that the injury occurred and called it upper-body. He said van Riemsdyk did not suffer the injury in a game. Van Riemsdyk has five goals and an assist in his first six games of the season. He took Monday off as a so-called maintenance day and did not play Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild. The 24-year-old left Wednesday’s practice early because he was “pretty stiff,” according to Carlyle. Canadian Press

Wimbledon champion Andy Murray receives royal honour LONDON - After winning two grand slams and an Olympic gold medal, Andy Murray has been given the royal seal of approval. Murray received his Officer of the Order of the British Empire medal by Prince William on Thursday, having been awarded the honour in Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year’s honours list for services to tennis following his victories at the U.S. Open and London Olympics in 2012. The Scot, who also won Wimbledon three months ago, nearly didn’t make it to the ceremony, though. Hours before making his way to Buckingham Palace, Murray tweeted: “In the middle of a drug test hahaha I’m goin to be late!!” Murray, who is currently out of action after undergoing season-ending back surgery, attended the ceremony with his girlfriend and parents and spoke to Prince William for about a minute while receiving the honour. Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill leads the team through a drill during practice at Western Financial Place on Thursday afternoon.

Ice face another triple-header Kootenay takes on the Blades on home ice before challenging the Oil Kings twice in Edmonton

TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

It’s been a stretch of peaks and valleys for the Kootenay ice over the last seven games. The team has made a pattern of earning a win, then losing the next game, then winning the following contest, and so on. Though the team pulled out a 2-0 shutout against the Raiders last Sunday, as Jaedon Descheneau broke the deadlock early in the third period, while Luke Philp added the empty net goal in the final minute. Despite the win, Ice head coach Ryan McGill wasn’t all that impressed with the effort he saw from his team, noting that he needs more players to step up. “Obviously, we were happy that we won, but

we can’t continually rely on Reinhart and Descheneau to score goals,” McGill said in a postgame interview on Sunday. “We need some secondary scoring from guys who are getting plenty of ice time and ample opportunity, so sooner or later, it’s going to bite us in the youknow-what. “We need to get guys that can drive to the net, get second and third chances to the net and lessen our turnovers in the neutral zone.” Forward Luke Philp agrees there has been inconsistent play, adding that the team is trying to identify and improve problem areas. “Win one, lose one— we kind of want to get out of that track and competing and bringing the effort shouldn’t be a question every game. We shouldn’t be losing games based on that,” Philp said. “We got to be working hard every game.” The Ice are heading into a weekend triple-header, beginning with a home contest with the Saskatoon Blades on Friday, before hitting the road for a pair of games against the Oil Kings in Edmonton on

Saturday and Sunday. The last time the Ice had a triple header was earlier in the month, where they earned three out of a possible six points against the Hitmen and the Thunderbirds.

“It’s a lot mentally, but it’s more in your head,” said Philp, on what the team learned the last time they played three games in three nights. “Anyone can do it, we’re in good enough shape to do it, but the schedule sometimes happens, so you got to get lots of sleep, drink lots of water, eat right, and that helps along the way.” The Blades that are heading to Cranbrook are a dramatically different looking team from last season. Head coach Lorne Molleken has stepped off the bench and is fo-

cusing solely on his general managing duties. Molleken’s assistant, Dave Struch, stepped up to take the top job. After losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Medicine Hat Tigers, the Blades, hosts of the Memorial Cup, were subsequently ousted by the OHL’s London Knights in the playoff round with a 6-1 thrashing. In the offseason, the Blades had to offload a number of players, as 14 of them qualified for overage status for the 2013-14 campaign. However, with a roster infused with new blood, the team struggled early with a fivegame losing streak, however, they’ve turned the ship around by winning their last four contests. Immediately following Friday’s game, the Ice will pile into the bus and head up to Edmonton for a pair of back-toback games at the Rexall Centre against the Oil Kings. Edmonton is in the unusual position of being near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, however, it’s still too early in the season to pass judgement. The team, which has

won two of their last seven games, has been bolstered with the return of captain Griffin Reinhart, who had an extended stay with the New York Islanders up in the NHL. Like the Blades, the Oil Kings lost a few overagers who turned pro, and have had some new blood infused in their roster. Despite youth, it looks like there will still be a tough netminder in the crease as Tristan Jarry has taken over goaltending duties from Calgary Flames prospect Laurent Brossoit. Jarry himself was picked up in the second round of the NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins last June. NOTES: A Skapski in the WHL was traded on Thursday but it wasn’t the Kootenay Ice goaltender. Mackezie Skapski’s younger brother, Mitch, was traded from the Everett Silvertips to the Victoria Royals. Mitch, who was a part of a trade package from the Portland Winterhawks for Nashville Predators D Seth Jones last year, suited up for 34 games with the Silvertips, scoring two goals and notching 10 penalty minutes.

Sports Boston defeats Detroit 4-3 for AL series stranglehold

DETROIT - Mike Napoli’s majestic homer began the early breakthrough Boston needed. Now, the Red Sox are a win away from the World Series - with a bullpen that Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers still can’t seem to solve. Napoli opened the scoring with another big long ball, Junichi Tazawa again bested Cabrera in a crucial spot and the Red Sox edged Detroit 4-3 on Thursday night. Former NHL enforcer Georges Laraque fighting fraud charges C anadian Press

MONTREAL - Former hockey tough guy Georges Laraque is bowing out of a byelection and his role as deputy leader of the federal Green Party so he can fight fraud charges. Laraque had originally planned to contest the byelection in a Montreal-area riding but announced the change of heart after spending the day reflecting with his family and campaign team. The vegan animal-rights activist insists he is innocent of all charges. Green party Leader Elizabeth May says she has full confidence in Laraque and accepts his resignation with regret.

trade-off the Red Sox were willing to make. Napoli led off a three-run second with a drive off Anibal Sanchez into the ivy beyond the wall in centre field. Detroit’s starters had allowed only three runs in 27 innings through the first four games of the series. After pitching six no-hit innings in Game 1, Sanchez allowed four - three earned - in six innings Thursday. Jon Lester allowed two runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings. He walked three and struck out three, and the Boston bullpen held on to finish off the fourth game of the se-

championship series. Game 6 is Saturday with the Tigers’ Max Scherzer facing the Red Sox’s Clay Buchholz. “Our guys are well aware of where we are,” manager John Farrell said. “But at the same time the beauty of them is to not get ahead of themselves, and that will be the case once that first pitch is thrown on Saturday.” Cabrera was thrown out at the plate in the first inning, halting an early Detroit rally, and he hit into a double play against Tazawa with runners at the corners in the seventh. The Tigers scored a run on the grounder, but it was a

He said the accusations stem from a dispute with engineer Marc Filion, who co-founded the company with him in 2009. Before his career as an activist and politician, the 36-year-old Laraque played for four NHL teams between 1997 and 2010 and was best-known for his fighting skills.

TORONTO - One of John Herdman’s World Cup goals for 2015 is to field the most resilient and connected team. “This resilience training starts now,” Canada’s women’s soccer coach said. The Canadians face South Korea at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium on Oct. 30, a friendly that both gives the women a chance to get used to the stadium where they’ll open up their World Cup campaign, and tests their resiliency. Average temperatures for Oct. 30 in the Alberta capital range from 0 to 6 C.

“The players need to see that it is part of the test to keep themselves focused on the task at hand,” Herdman said on a conference call Thursday to announce his preliminary roster. “I’m hoping the warm reception of the crowd warms everything up for us; the more people we put in the stadium, the warmer it will be.” The Canadian team that will face South Korea features 13 Olympic bronze medallists plus 16-year-old national team rookie Sura Yekka, as Herdman continues to evaluate young talent before the final push to the World Cup.

That was the start of a three-run second inning, and it was Napoli’s second homer of the series. His solo shot accounted for the only run of Game 3. Detroit revamped its lineup before its Game 4 win dropping Austin Jackson from the leadoff spot to eighth and moving almost everyone else up a place. The Tigers went with that same general framework Thursday, but it was Boston manager John Farrell’s adjustments that paid off.

The Tigers will have Justin Verlander ready to pitch Game 7 if there is one. Detroit may be without catcher Alex Avila in Boston. He left after the top of the fourth with a strained left knee. Boston led in only four of 36 innings in the first four games, but the Red Sox won two of them. They struck early in Game 5 when Napo-

Cabrera, who struck out with runners at the corners against Tazawa in the eighth inning of a 1-0 loss in Game 3, hit a soft grounder to second for a double play this time. Conservatives target spending-scandal senators

Joan Bryden and Jennifer Ditchburn Canadian Press

OTTAWA — The Harper government moved Thursday to cauterize the bleeding from the ever-mushrooming Senate expenses scandal. Claude Carignan, the government’s leader in the Senate, introduced motions to suspend Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau, three of four senators at the heart of the scandal. The motions would strip the trio of their pay, benefits and Senate resources. Brazeau was originally suspended with pay last winter after he was charged with assault and sexual assault. News of the motions came just before government whip John Duncan announced in the House of Commons that Conservative MPs and senators will begin voluntarily disclosing greater details of their expenses. The twin moves, coming on the first full day of the new parliamentary session, appeared aimed at quelling some of the raging Senate controversy that has engulfed the government for almost a full year. But opposition par-

ties signalled they won’t let up on their relentless attacks on the government’s ethics. NDP ethics critic Charlie Angus won the support of other opposition parties Thursday for his bid to have a Commons committee determine whether Prime Minister Stephen

Harper deliberately misled the Commons over the Senate expenses scandal or was deceived by his own staff. Angus asked Commons Speaker Andrew Scheer to make a preliminary finding that Harper was in contempt of Parliament last spring when he repeatedly in-

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: There is a young couple in our church who spend the entire mass making out. They kiss, tickle, rub and caress each other every minute of the service. It’s very distracting. It is also distracting to see other people in church snickering and rolling their eyes at them. I am praying that these two read your column and have a PDA wake-up call. -- Switching Masses Dear Switching: It is not uncommon for newly enamored couples to have difficulty keeping their hands off of each other. They think others will see it as proof of their love, when in actuality, it is a sign of immaturity. Finding another mass is one option. The other is informing the priest, who should counsel the couple about proper decorum in a place of worship. Dear Annie: I’ve been married for 32 years, and my wife has been both verbally and physically abusive to me all that time. She uses vulgar language, is sarcastic and likes to hit and punch me. I almost filed for divorce after five years, hoping it would make her change, but it didn’t work. She has anger, stress, weight, sleep and back problems and does nothing about them. She’s crabby all of the time. How do I tell her in a nice way that we will never survive under the same roof unless she makes progress on these problems? -- Lost in Wisconsin Dear Lost: Your wife doesn’t believe you will leave her. You’ve tolerated 32 years of verbal and physical abuse, and quite logically, she expects you to stick around for more. Like many abused spouses, you believe you can make things better, but that requires her cooperation. Please contact the Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women (dahmw.org) at 1-888-7HELPLINE. Dear Annie: I am the daughter-in-law mentioned in the letter from “Disappointed Parents,” who said I retreated to the bedroom while my mother-in-law handled the movers. From their letter, I can understand why you think I might be a problem. Yes, they did travel a long distance to help us with our move, and it was greatly appreciated. I kept thanking them and continuously asked whether they were OK and whether they needed anything. I was told over and over that they were just fine. The day the movers arrived, my husband and I agreed that he would deal with them and I would keep our small children out of the way in our bedroom. He didn’t tell me that he and his father left to go to the bank, leaving his stepmother to handle the movers. My husband and I both slept until noon that day, but they only castigated me for being “lazy.” They didn’t mention that I was up until 4 a.m. unpacking. They were bothered that I didn’t have breakfast ready for them, even though the kitchen wasn’t unpacked. They expected to be entertained. When they decided to leave in a huff, I was bathing our kids. They didn’t even lock the front door behind them. After they left, I received nasty emails saying how rude I was and that I need to apologize. Each one included a laundry list of the ways I am a terrible daughter-inlaw and don’t know my place. I didn’t send birthday and Christmas greetings because my husband said he wasn’t interested in doing so. His father has a history of anger issues and has alienated every other family member. My last email stated that I was cutting off contact. I am too busy raising my children to raise my in-laws. They smile to your face while making lists of slights behind your back. I don’t want my kids around such behavior. Thank you for reading my side of the events. -- Shell-Shocked Daughter-in-Law Dear Shell-Shocked: Thanks for providing it. Many readers came to your defense, saying that a new mother who had just moved had her hands full and deserved more consideration. We agree. The Best Things Come in Small Packages

Financing business growth

Octoberfest

What you need to know before you go to the bank

Say you’ve got a small business in need of a loan. You’re growing, and you’d like some extra money for an expansion project. Sales are going up, and you’re making a nice profit. Should be an easy sell to the bank, right?

Not necessarily, especially if you don’t do your homework, says Pat Latour, Senior Vice President, Financing and Consulting, at the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). “If you’re going to expand, you’ve got to have a plan. If you don’t, you can jeopardize the rest of the business that is doing well,” he says.

Many businesses walk into a bank’s office without the right planning—and then they’re surprised when their loan request is turned down. “Knowing the num-

bers is key. How will the expansion affect your profitability?” Latour asks. “Growing businesses need more working capital because they’re often supporting additional inventory and more staff. And it often takes a while for the expansion to increase profitability,” Latour explains. “On the other hand, an expansion can also lead to unexpectedly rapid revenue growth. Entrepreneurs should also plan for that scenario and be ready to use the extra revenue to aim even higher,” he says. How do you get your ducks in a row for a successful loan request? First, take time to work out your anticipated return on the investment, including

not just the cost of the fixed asset, but also the way your business operations will change as you grow. Second, it’s vital to think about your timing when applying for a loan. Businesses often wait too long, Latour says. Instead, they use cash flow to finance major expansions or, even worse, wait until they’re facing a cash crunch to see the bank. “One of the biggest reasons businesses fail or an expansion doesn’t succeed is a lack of working capital. It’s always easier to get financing beforehand than when you have a timing crunch,” he says. Latour advises fast-growing businesses to meet their banker every year to get a pre-approved loan for capital ex-

Such a credit facility also lets a business react more quickly to opportunities, since it doesn’t need to apply for a new loan each time it needs funds. Change to grow Sean Darrah learned some of these lessons at his fast-growing food services business, Pace Process-

ing. Starting from a 1,500-square-foot space in 2001, it had grown to a 10,000-square-foot location by 2007. But even that space was maxed out, and Darrah wanted to expand into a new, bigger building. He had always used working capital to finance his growth, but he now realized he needed a loan for the costly expansion.

NEWS

DNA testing suggests Yeti could be a polar bear hybrid in Himalayas Jill L awless Associated Press

Georgian National Museum

The skull was one of five remains of primitive humans found at the Dmanisi archaeological site, south-west of the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.

Out of Africa 1.8 million-year-old skull shows early human ancestors evolving and on the move

Seth Borenstein and Sophiko Megrelidze Associated Press

DMANISI — The discovery of a 1.8-million-year-old skull of a human ancestor buried under a medieval Georgian village provides a vivid picture of early evolution and indicates our family tree may have fewer branches than some believe, scientists say. The fossil is the most complete pre-human skull uncovered. With other partial remains previously found at the rural site, it gives researchers the earliest evidence of human ancestors moving out of Africa and spreading north to the rest of the world, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Science. The skull and other remains offer a glimpse of a population of pre-humans of various sizes living at the same time — something that scientists had not seen before for such an ancient era. This diversity bolsters one of two competing theories about the way our early ancestors evolved, spreading out more like a tree than a bush. Nearly all of the previous pre-human discoveries have been fragmented bones, scattered over time and locations — like a smattering of random tweets of our evolutionary history. The findings at Dmanisi are more complete, weaving more of a short story. Before the site was found, the movement from Africa was put at about 1 million years ago. When examined with the earlier Georgian finds, the skull “shows that this special immigration out of Africa

happened much earlier than we thought and a much more primitive group did it,’’ said study lead author David Lordkipanidze, director of the Georgia National Museum. “This is important to understanding human evolution.’’ For years, some scientists have said humans evolved from only one or two species, much like a tree branches out from a trunk, while others say the process was more like a bush with several offshoots that went nowhere. Even bush-favouring scientists say these findings show one single species nearly 2 million years ago at the former Soviet republic site. But they disagree that the same conclusion can be said for bones found elsewhere, such as Africa. However, Lordkipanidze and colleagues point out that the skulls found in Georgia are different sizes but considered to be are the same species. So, they reason, it’s likely the various skulls found in different places and times in Africa may not be different species, but variations in one species. To see how a species can vary, just look in the mirror, they said. “Danny DeVito, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal are the same species,’’ Lordkipanidze said. The adult male skull found wasn’t from our species, Homo sapiens. It was from an ancestral species — in the same genus or class called Homo — that led to modern humans. Scientists say the Dmanisi population is likely an early part of our long-lived primary ancestral species, Homo erectus.

LONDON — A British scientist says he may have solved the mystery of the Abominable Snowman — the elusive ape-like creature of the Himalayas. He thinks it’s a bear. DNA analysis conducted by Oxford University genetics professor Bryan Sykes suggests the creature, also known as the Yeti, is the descendant of an ancient polar bear. Sykes compared DNA from hair samples taken from two Himalayan animals — identified by local people as Yetis — to a database of animal genomes. He found they shared a genetic fingerprint with a polar bear jawbone found in the Norwegian Arctic that is at least 40,000 years old. Sykes said Thursday that the tests showed the creatures were not related to modern Himalayan bears but were direct descendants of the prehistoric animal. He said, “it may be a new spe-

cies, it may be a hybrid’’ between polar bears and brown bears. “The next thing is go there and find one.’’ Sykes put out a call last year for museums, scientists and Yeti aficionados to share hair samples thought to be from the creature. One of the samples he analyzed came from an alleged Yeti mummy in the Indian region of Ladakh, at the Western edge of the Himalayas, and was taken by a French mountaineer who was shown the corpse 40 years ago. The other was a single hair found a decade ago in Bhutan, 800 miles (1,300 kilometres) to the east. Sykes said the fact the hair samples were found so far apart, and so recently, suggests the members of the species are still alive. “I can’t imagine we managed to get samples from the only two ‘snow bears’ in the Himalayas,’’ he said. Finding a living creature could explain whether differenc-

es in appearance and behaviour to other bears account for descriptions of the Yeti as a hairy hominid. “The polar bear ingredient in their genomes may have changed their behaviour so they act different, look different, maybe walk on two feet more often,’’ he said. Sykes’ research has not been published, but he says he has submitted it for peer review. His findings will be broadcast Sunday in a television program on Britain’s Channel 4. Sykes’ findings are unlikely to lay the myth of the Yeti to rest. The Yeti or Abominmable Snowman is one of a number of legendary ape-like beasts — along with Sasquatch and Bigfoot — reputed to live in heavily forested or snowy mountains. Scientists are skeptical, but decades of eyewitness reports, blurry photos and stories have kept the legend alive. Sykes said he was simply trying “to inject some science into a rather murky field.’’

Good night’s sleep clears built-up gunk from brain, mouse study says Alicia Chang Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — When we sleep, our brains get rid of gunk that builds up while we’re awake, suggests a study that may provide new clues to treat Alzheimer’s disease and other disorders. This cleaning was detected in the brains of sleeping mice, but scientists said there’s reason to think it happens in people too. If so, the finding may mean that for people with dementia and other mind disorders, “sleep would perhaps be even more important in slowing the progression of further damage,’’ Dr. Clete Kushida, medical director of the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center, said in an email. Kushida did not participate in

the study, which appears in Friday’s issue of the journal Science. People who don’t get enough shut-eye have trouble learning and making decisions, and are slower to react. But despite decades of research, scientists can’t agree on the basic purpose of sleep. Reasons range from processing memory, saving energy to regulating the body. The latest work, led by scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center, adds fresh evidence to a long-standing view: When we close our eyes, our brains go on a cleaning spree. The team previously found a plumbing network in mouse brains that flushes out cellular waste. For the new study, the scientists injected the brains of mice

with beta-amyloid, a substance that builds up in Alzheimer’s disease, and followed its movement. They determined that it was removed faster from the brains of sleeping mice than awake mice. The team also noticed that brain cells tend to shrink during sleep, which widens the space between the cells. This allows waste to pass through that space more easily. Though the work involved mouse brains, lead researcher Dr. Maiken Nedergaard said this plumbing system also exists in dogs and baboons, and it’s logical to think that the human brain also clears away toxic substances. Nedergaard said the next step is to look for the process in human brains.

Larry Flynt opposes execution for man on death row who wounded him, killed several others

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Porn publisher Larry Flynt says he doesn’t want to see the man whose gunshots paralyzed him 25 years ago put to death for his crimes. In an essay published Thursday in The Hollywood Reporter, Flynt says that while he would love to take

pliers and a pair of wire cutters to Joseph Paul Franklin, he does not believe in the death penalty. The Hustler magazine publisher says keeping Franklin locked in a tiny prison cell for the rest of his life is a greater punishment. Franklin has been in prison since 1980 for a string

of shootings that left five people dead and others wounded. He is scheduled to be executed Nov. 20 in Missouri. Franklin targeted blacks, Jews and people like Flynt, who he believed promoted interracial relations.
