By Jennifer Lang A well-travelled giant pumpkin, Surrey’s exhilarating Celebration Dance Team, and local exhibitors are among the star attractions at this year’s Halloween Costume Parade in Cloverdale. The popular daytime trick-or-treat parade attracts hundreds of local families each year, and promises to take over the historic town centre this Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26). It’s a safe, family-friendly event involving local businesses, too. It’s now in its 13th year. Festivities begin at noon at Surrey Museum Plaza and the parade starts at 2 p.m., when children in costumes are taken on a supervised walk through downtown Cloverdale. Trick or treaters visit local stores in three zones: downtown, Brickyard Station and

Clover Square Village mall.(Prizes for costumes are awarded by random draw.) Six hundred children showed up in the rain last year, with just under 1,200 turning out the year before. “It’s like our version of a giant open house on Halloween weekend,” says Paul Orazietti, executive director of the Cloverdale BIA, which co-organizes the event. “The merchants are the ones that bring it alive. They get dressed up – they get quite into it. Some have smoke machines. It’s their way of saying, here we are and giving back to the community.” Cloverdale and area is home to a huge, and growing, population of families with young children who like having an alternative to going door-to-door in the dark. “This is a safe way of getting candy,” Orazietti says. “And, people like to dress up.”

The often elaborate and frequently creative costumes donned by young and old are truly something to behold. One year, a dad and his sons dressed up as pirates – complete with a rolling pirate ship with all the trimmings, right down to the grinning Jolly Roger flag atop the mast. Dressing up as comic book heroes like Spider-Man and Disney princesses are popular options, as is paying homage to pop culture icons from TV and film. “We’ve had the Philadelphia Cream Cheese angel and Shreks,” says Orazietti, who says although this year’s big TV moment was the Breaking Bad finale, he doubts many costumes will reference the AMC show. “More than likely it will be zombies, because Walking Dead is doing big numbers.” Costumes are only part of the action.

A party with heart

By Jennifer Lang It’s one of the most exclusive invites on the Cloverdale social calendar. Each September, local businessman Rob ‘Turkey’ Kielesinski hosts a golf tournament and dinner and dance. It’s a party with a mission: money raised is designated for lung cancer research in memory of his mother-in-law, Marion, the inspiration for the event – now in its 18th successful year. The 2013 version raised $15,000, thanks to the generous support of his party guests, some of whom came as far away as the U.K., Vernon, and Bellingham. “We’ve probably got 20 of them that’s never missed one of these,” says the man with the distinctive laugh. It’s easy to see why: Kielesinski’s guests play nine holes of novelty golf at Sunrise Golf Course, and then convene back at Turkey’s Party Maker’s warehouse for a dinner and dance, plus zany fundraising events like snail races and auction. Whatever his guests donate, he

matches – adding up to $7,500 this year. Turkey’s Party Maker’s staff, plus friends, volunteer to help host. Over the years, the parties have raised $120,000 for the B.C. Cancer Foundation. “It’s amazing,” says the foundation’s Rachel Mitchell, adding the annual fundraiser is uniquely long-lived. She says the money makes a big impact and is spent on research: the foundation is the fundraising partner of the BC Cancer Agency, and is the largest

fundraiser of cancer research in the province. Every year at the dinner, Kielesinski announces who in their circle of family and friends has passed away from cancer. “This year, it was 11,” he says. “This year, too, we had more survivors or who are fighting it, stand up. It’s a party, but it’s serious.”

The Surrey Museum at 17710 56A Avenue is hosting Pumpkin Power. Come decorate jack-o’-lanterns and eat pumpkin pie. There will be spooky games and a Halloween scavenger hunt in the museum’s exhibit gallery. (Must pre-register at 604-592-6956). Outside, parade participants can have their photo taken with a giant pumpkin. Grower Mario Camparmo of Fort Langley – who calls himself The Pumpkin Dude – will be bringing along an 800-pound pumpkin. The former resident of Cloverdale belongs to a giant pumpkin grower club, recently took the pumpkin to a weigh-off in Oregon. The Surrey Celebration Team are set to perform a Halloween themed dance at 1:15 p.m. The group formed in 2010 and has grown to as many as 25 dancers aged 17 to 27 who combine a range of dance styles, from tumbling and break dancing to hip hop and ballet. In the plaza, check out Cinemazoo’s exhibit of scary critters: tarantulas, skunks and reptiles. The Halloween Costume Parade is presented by the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association, and Cloverdale Chamber of Com-

merce, along with various sponsors, including Surrey RCMP’s District

4 office, along with Surrey Crime Prevention. Registration is from

noon to 1:45 p.m., followed by the group photo and parade at 2 p.m.

Throne speech or partisan photo op?

T

Make no mistake, writes Adrian McNair. This is yet another political opportunity to exploit

he throne speech is one of the many throwbacks to our constitutional monarchy, no doubt originally conceived to remind Canadians of the parliamentary agenda. And while it may have made a good deal of sense in the pre-Internet days when the nation needed a refresher on the goings-on in Ottawa, it’s utterly and absurdly superfluous in the 24-hour-news cycle that is 2013. If it were merely a laundry list of things the cabinet members hope to accomplish between now and next year–which it isn’t–that could be understood. But the throne speech has devolved into what just about every Harper government public relations activity has become: a carefully controlled, contrived and condescending photo opportunity. Make no mistake. This isn’t about sharing the hopes and dreams of a nation embarking on a new session of parliament. It’s a chance for Stephen Harper to get photographs with his cabinet, talk about how much the stimu-

lus spending helped us escape the recession, and advertise the Conservative Party. The level of contempt with which the media is treated in this whole circus situated on parliament hill was best exemplified on Oct. 16 when the prime minister’s office decreed that a single “press pool” photographer was to be allowed inside the halls of power during the throne speech. Camera crews were to be permitted, but pesky reporters were not. After all, they might ask questions about European trade pacts, or other off-topic journalistic type stuff. The throne speech is about taking pot shots at the expense of the NDP and the Liberals, not the government defending its record from public scrutiny. Fear not, however, that record will be provided complete with prescreened quotes from a strategic communications director. You may retweet meaningless platitudes as well, such as the one the PMO posted on

Twitter: “Despite our accomplishments, we will not rest here. We must go further and we must go faster.” When reporters are banned from reporting to the people, where else can one turn but Twitter? There you can learn that the government supports the troops, scrapped the long-gun registry, and fixed the economy. What you won’t hear from the PMO Twitter account, however, is that the former Reformer who once campaigned on a triple-E Senate has presided over the largest expense scandal in the history of the red chamber. This government has twice prorogued on the people when parliamentary questions became inconvenient to its message. Perhaps it’s time we prorogue on the throne speech, ignore its public relations massaging and photo ops, and cover real news.

Points of view

– Adrian McNair is a reporter at the South Delta Leader.

Political columnist short on material To the editor; Re: “Social justice as student indoctrination,” B.C. Views, CloverdaleReporter.com. I have a suspicion that no one bemoans the latest election loss of the B.C. NDP more than Tom Fletcher. Had the NDP won, Mr. Fletcher would never have run out of hot topics to discuss. At present, however, Mr. Fletcher must be truly at loss, running out of material faster than a December day out of sunlight. Looking at his latest column dedicated to the BCTF and its evils, the poor man is seen reduced to trolling old news and stale stories stuck on the BCTF website and in the memory of former education ministers. Mr. Fletcher agrees that “racism, homophobia and sexism” are within the purview of the BCTF while “poverty and globalization” can’t be possibly

the topics a major education organization can be involved in. This is interesting. Although the BCTF’s statistics might be suspect, existence of child poverty in Canada is hardly in dispute. While Mr. Fletcher is not enthused by the BCTF’s efforts to teach 8-year-olds basic lessons in compassion by encouraging donations to local food banks, he is outright indignant at the prospect of children’s exploring possible reasons behind the existence of poverty, especially if those are “taken directly from the tired old NDP policy book.” To the utter amazement of Mr. Fletcher, a stale teaching guide “Boycott Nike” is still hanging on the BCTF website. Don’t they know that it is not only Nike, but Adidas, Reebok and Apple who are also susceptible to the low cost pleasures of third

world sweatshops? After all, if you are not the only one behaving unethically, then you are clearly entitled to impunity? “If others do it why can’t I?” This is how Mr. Fletcher dispenses with any possible misdeeds perpetrated by multinational corporations around the world. This is a very persuasive point on Mr. Fletcher’s part. The most amusing bit is found at the very end of the Mr. Fletcher’s article where he resorts to mining wisdom from none other than George Orwell, the very man, who is well-known for being a democratic socialist, a fighter for social justice, and an advocate for economic equality (i.e. redistribution of incomes) – the very worldviews that are so abhorrent to Mr. Fletcher. Back to the car barn A little girl from Victoria celebrating her fourth birthday became the 5,000th passenger to ride the restored heritage interurban train out of Cloverdale Station on Thanksgiving weekend. Bridie Kay Mayer and her parents were among the final passengers to take the one-hour round trip to Sullivan Station at 64 Avenue and 152 Street and back on the century-old B.C. Electric Railway car 1225. The volunteer-driven Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society has wrapped up its inaugural season operating the heritage railway pilot project, and is looking forward to resuming operations next spring. Meanwhile, restoration work at the Cloverdale car barn will continue on car 1304 and the society is expecting to increase its fleet of original interurbans to include BCER 916, currently in Edmonton. Over the winter, the society will also meet with partners to review changes and improvements, as planning for 2014 gets underway. For more information, visit www.fvhrs.org. – Cloverdale Reporter

Correction Last year, the BC Childhood Cancer Parent’s Association raised approximately $150,000 overall, with 92 per cent of those funds going directly into the hands of families with a child with cancer and who are struggling financially (“Inside Ride will go the distance in Cloverdale,” Oct. 3). The registered charity is the beneficiary of tonight’s Inside Ride (Oct. 24) at the Cloverdale Recreation Centre. All proceeds – 100 per cent – of the money raised at the Inside Ride goes to the BCCCPA.

don’t-give-up, keep-moving-forward attitude.” She also cites the guiding influence of her Knights coach (“Cory was like a second father to me, because I saw him, like, four hours a day”), former teammates and others, all working to support her goals. Reimer’s determination pushed her all the way to the national team, where she was the youngest member by far. Despite her age, she was a star, in 2003 placing fourth in 800 freestyle and sixth in 1,500 freestyle at the world championships. In reporting Reimer’s induction, SwimSwam.com called her “The Queen of distance swimming in Canada from 2003 to 2007.” She was just 16 when she competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. She finished in 17th spot in the 800 meter freestyle – not quite the medal she’d been working for, but more success lay ahead. She won silver in the 800 and bronze in the 1,500 at the 2005 World Aquatic Championships in Montreal. The times she posted – 8:27.59 in the 800 and 16:07.73 in the 1,500 remain the Canadian records. “I think they’re the oldest, now, on the books. I want someone to break them,” she says, so they can “have that experience for themselves.” She has no regrets about retiring at a relatively young age. “I felt like, for my life, I had finished that chapter,” she says. “I knew I had the potential to move on to something else. It’s so much work, and it’s so hard on your body. When you’re done, you’re done.” She’s still grateful for the support of Cloverdale residents, who helped ensure her parents were able to travel to Greece to watch her in Athens. A big fundraiser was held at her school, Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary. “I wouldn’t have gone where I did if we didn’t have the support of everybody else around us,” she says. “I’m just so lucky to have been at the level I was in my sport. I got the opportunity to meet so many people.”

Clova snags film version of Rocky Horror show By Jennifer Lang Break out the water pistols, newspapers and rice: Cloverdale will be doing the Time Warp this Halloween. The Clova Cinema is bringing the Rocky Horror Picture Show to the silver screen for a 7 p.m. show Oct. 31. If that sells out, a second show will likely be added. All proceeds will be going towards the singlescreen movie house’s conversion to a digital projection system, a goal that’s becoming ever more pressing for the 66-year-old cinema. “Sadly, the reason why we got the movie to begin with is the fact that we’re the last movie theatre to convert, and managed to snag the only film copy there is,” Clova staffer Samantha LeDrew told newsletter subscribers. “So it is a good and bad thing that we haven’t converted yet.” The theatre had put a call-out for performing arts groups wanting to stage a live version of the musical, anticipating it would be unable to track down a version to screen on Halloween. But last week came word that the Clova will be showing the movie, as hoped. The news should draw fans from across the Lower Mainland. Originally a stage musical, the Rocky Horror Picture Show was turned into a 1975 film that became a cult favourite with audience members who quoted dialogue, danced along, and mirrored the action on screen using props at midnight screenings.

It follows hunky square Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and his fiancee Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) on a rain-soaked adventure to the mansion of Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry), a corseted, highheeled-wearing scientist whose mansion is filled with the Time-Warping denizens of a distant galaxy of Transylvania. Costumes encouraged, as are props. Horrors galore at Potters By Jennifer Lang Potters House of Horrors, one of the most anticipated fall frights is scaring the beejeesus out of visitors for its 11th season. The labyrinth at 12530 72 Avenue is bloodier and scarier than ever before “and just downright horrifying.” It’s a heck of a sales pitch, but the Ghoul Crew at Potters have cottoned onto a winning formula, because the annual attraction draws upwards of 20,000 visitors to the totally transformed garden centre each October. Dozens work behind the scenes – and in the scenes – at the 10,000 square-foot, 24-room spectacle each evening. The attraction features computerSee SIX WEEKS / Page 9

By Jennifer Lang A Cloverdale woman who found a black and white class photo taken in 1942 tucked inside an atlas is hoping to reunite the picture with its rightful owner – or, failing that, a living relative. Lana Harrison bought the atlas at a second hand store in Langley, which gives her hope that it may be a meaningful link with the past of someone living in the area. Text printed on the photo (pictured at right) reads “No. 2 course radio technicians at the University of Western Ontario, F./O.R.W.

Barton, Commanding Officer, April 1942.” In pencil on the back, someone has written the first and/or last names of some of the graduates, commanding officers, professors and instructors, along with their home provinces or cities. Those names with an apparent link to British Columbia are “Stan”, “Harrison”, “McAllister”, and “Goodfellow” from Vancouver. If you would like more information, contact Harrison via the Reporter at editor@cloverdalereporter. com or 604-575-2400.

Home Buyers’ Tax Credit (HBTC): Like the Home Buyers Plan, if you haven’t lived in another home owned by you or your spouse or common-law partner in any of the four preceding years and you acquire a qualifying home (eg. A housing unit located in Canada that will be your principal residence), you can claim an amount of $5,000 for the Home Buyers’ Tax Credit (HBTC). This provides up to $750 in federal tax relief. This initiative is designed to help first-time home buyers with the costs associated with the purchase of a home such as legal fees, land transfer taxes, etc. This tax credit is claimed on income tax returns in the year you purchase a home. There is also opportunity for individuals who require wheelchair accessible homes to claim this tax credit.
