he North Shore Salvation Army Shields are gearing up to play against teams from across the country at the Canadian Homeless Soccer Games in North Van from May 28 to June 1 next year. The first event of its kind in Canada, coach Charles MacGregor was instrumental in making the games happen. He expects teams to bus from across B.C. and other provinces for the cup, which will be friendly with a good dose of competitiveness. The Shields are stepping up their practices at John Braithwaite Community Centre to prepare. “We don’t ask questions here. It’s all about just coming down and having fun,” says MacGregor at the community centre, his second home. “If they want to tell you something, they will tell you. Give them dignity and don’t ask.” MacGregor, the Salvation Army’s volunteer athletic coordinator, has coached the team for eight years and launched the North and West Van Homeless Men and Women Soccer Cup. Many of his players are recruited from the North Shore Lookout Shelter. Playing for the Shields is more about teamwork than being the star player. “Everyone gets a chance here. If we do have

Charles MacGregor a really good player, then they will help the others,” MacGregor tells The Outlook. Flying players to other homeless cups has been expensive with limited participation. Last year one player was sent to Mexico and the year before to Paris. But North Van hosting the Canadian Homeless Soccer Games means the whole team can join. Many games will be held at Kinsmen Field on Jones Avenue. Soccer, unlike hockey and other sports, is low-cost. All you need is a ball and six or seven players, says MacGregor. He’s seen many team members’ lives change for the better once they have the chance to let loose and pass the ball around. Of those who have played for the Shields, 73 per cent have made lifestyle changes and 94 per cent have increase motivation to make improvements. “Some players call this a sanctuary,” says MacGregor of the community centre where they practice. “It’s dry, safe and they can have showers after.”

Dr. Avinashi’s strong interest in humanitarian work has led him to undertake several fundraising campaigns to support various care programs that serve Third World countries. “Internationally, we know there are so many preventable causes of blindness,” he says. North Shore dietician struggled to live on just $26 a week for food — the same amount given to people on welfare. While taking part in the Welfare Food Challenge, a province-wide event from Oct. 16 to 22 that highlights the inadequacy of welfare rates in B.C., Kathy Romses ate relatively healthy meals but admits she was frequently hungry and “frustrated.” Equipped with a stove, fridge and a dietician’s wealth of knowledge on nutrition, she’s much more prepared than most people on welfare, especially those living in rundown rooming houses. “I always knew $26 wasn’t very much, but to actually go out and shop and live on it was a huge learning curve,” she tells The Outlook. “I went shopping beforehand and figured out skim milk powder was actually more expensive than the fluid milk. I weighed out my flour… to make sure I had enough to make tortillas, and I made my own yogurt.” Many people on welfare, she says, don’t have the cooking facilities to prepare healthy food so they have to rely on cheap, readymade meals. And getting groceries from the food bank, she adds, isn’t an option for everyone because of the long lineups. The $26 budget for food is calculated on a $610 monthly allowance given to welfare recipients, which must also cover rent, bus tickets, phone calls and personal hygiene. Members of Raise the Rates, the coalition

DISNEY DRESSUP!

organizing the second annual Welfare Food Challenge, say many people on welfare are living in “extreme poverty,” which causes bad health, stress and emotional harm. They want the rates increased to include basic healthy food. According to the Dietitians of Canada’s report Cost of Eating in B.C., it actually costs $52 per week for a woman Romses’ age to eat, double what the government is providing for welfare recipients. This is based on living in a family of four; the amount goes up for singleperson households. “My husband says ‘You can get those instant noodle soup packages for 25 cents each’ and I said I am not eating that because it’s really unhealthy. “…I don’t want to become unhealthy and I think that’s what people on income assistance are forced to do. I could not do this long-term. It’s not sustainable.” The 2012 Welfare Challenge called on MLAs to live on $610 a month, the welfare rate for a single person. This includes $375 for rent, which Raise the Rates says isn’t enough since even rooms on the Downtown Eastside usually cost $425 a month. Jagrup Brar, MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood, took up the challenge and ended up borrowing money and selling possessions to get through the month. In the end, he had a difficult time concentrating, his energy-level declined and he lost 26 pounds. “…he lived on the $610 voluntarily, he started the month fit and healthy and he only did one month,” says Raise the Rates organizer Bill Hopwood. “Imagine what welfare does to people over a long period of time.” mgarstin@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/MichaelaGarstin

t was a room full of champions last week as the West Vancouver Otters Swim Club held their annual awards banquet at the Hollyburn Country Club. The formal night is always fun for the families and friends who get a chance to honour the kids and all of the year’s achievements. This year was extra special as guest star and 2010 Winter Olympic gold medal champion Ashleigh McIvor paid a visit to sign autographs and speak to all the athletes. Keep a close watch on this gang as something tells me we just might see another future Olympian emerge in the not-so-distant future. Congrats to everyone involved!

roudly holding up Canadian and American patents, John Quee has done the seemingly impossible — he owns the exclusive rights to manufacture snow that’s seen on thousands of major film sets and in shopping mall displays worldwide. Flurries on the block- buster movie Shutter Island? Chilly scenes on Terminator Salvation? The festive atmosphere in Danny DeVito’s Deck the Halls? That’s all Quee’s faux snow. He even made the deadly volcanic ash on the sci-fi disaster film 2012 by d y e i n g the flakes a deep black. And many big-name retailers use his snow for window displays. The long list includes Tommy Hilfiger, J Crew, Ralph Lauren, Aveda and Coca-Cola. Moods of Norway, a casual-chic American clothing company, spiced up its window displays using snow in the brand’s signature colour — hot pink. The artificial snow is made in a three-storey warehouse at Quee’s store ThomasFX, a movie prop and special effects mainstay off Dollarton Highway in North Vancouver. It’s then bagged, boxed and shipped around the world, mostly to Toronto, New York, Albuquerque, Los Angeles, New Orleans and other movie hot-spots. “These two patents, they cost around $80,000 but it protects us [from com-

The patent is pending.” Staying on top of the game has helped ThomasFX survive 45 years in the volatile film industry. Quee knew early on that relying solely on Lower Mainland sets wasn’t a good business plan, even during the industry’s heyday in the early 2000s. With the help of his wife, he built a website that serves productions around the world. “It doesn’t matter to us where movies are being filmed, we ship snow anywhere,” he says. The upcoming adventure movie Pompeii, set to be released in theatres early next year, was filmed in Toronto using “truckload after truckload of volcanic ash” from ThomasFX. So as you watch the film’s main character try to save his true love before Mount Vesuvius erupts, remember the destruction of Pompeii wouldn’t have been possible without a snow patent created right here on the North Shore. mgarstin@northshoreoutlook.com

ou wouldn’t normally see the names of “Mr. Hockey” Gordie Howe and For Better or For Worse cartoonist Lynn Johnston in the same paragraph.

But with the 85-year-old Howe scheduled to be the honourary host of the Scotiabank Hockey for Alzeimers Tournament at Canlan Ice Sports on Mt. Seymour Parkway coming up Nov. 15-17, it seems like a good time to tell you how Johnston and Howe connected 40 years ago during the 1973-74 hockey season, the second year of the upstart World Hockey Association. Johnston was Lynn Ridgway when she graduated from North Van High in 1965 where her mischievous doodles were everywhere in the school annuals she edited. She had not yet begun sketching her famous cartoon strip when she landed a job with the fledgling Global Television Network doing caricatures of the WHA players being interviewed on the broadcasts. “The art work was on camera,” Lynn explained to me some years ago. “It would be put up and then dissolve into the person they were interviewing. So if they were going to interview Gordie Howe, there would be a close-up of the cartoon of Gordie Howe and then it would dissolve to Gordie Howe himself. They used to give the artwork to the athlete as a gift and so I often didn’t get it back. Gordie Howe’s I got back.” Howe was returning to the ice that lencorben@yahoo.ca season with the WHA Houston Aeros after retiring from the NHL in 1971 following 25 years with Detroit. The Aeros finished on top of the western division as Howe topped the team in scoring with 100 points and was awarded the league’s MVP trophy. Houston went on to win the Avco World Trophy, the WHA equivalent of the Stanley Cup I expressed interest in seeing any of the caricatures Lynn still had but she wasn’t sure exactly where they were. In the fall of 2009 she shipped off more than 4,000 original pieces of her work up to 1995 to the Canadian Archives and Special Collections in Ottawa. It wasn’t until September 2010 that art archivist Jennifer Devine began the task of sorting through the 25 boxes of artwork to catalogue the contents. By November 2011 she had found 12 hockey cartoons including two of Howe, six other players, a referee, several team logos and a funny one of two lawyers – one representing the WHA and the other the NHL – arguing in front of a judge. In January 2012, after Jennifer had scanned and sent them to me, it only took about an hour to identify Wayne Carleton, Gerry Cheevers, Ted Green, Harry Howell, Johnny McKenzie, and Mike Walton, although the referee is still unknown…

» TASTING NOTES

The expansion of John’s wine passion

A

sk anyone in the local wine trade about John Clerides, the owner of Davie Street’s Marquis Wine Cellars for the last 27 years, and I guarantee the first thing they’ll do is give you a smirk and a light chuckle. Don’t get me wrong; the guy’s no joke. In fact, he’s one of the most dogged, brilliant wine minds in the province; always travelling, digging and sourcing new, amazing wines to bring to our shores. What that initial reaction will be a reflection of is that John has always been one of the most plainspoken guys we know, and for years has been a thorn in the side of the pols and bureaucrats responsible for liquor laws and policy that have had all of us tossing out words like “archaic” and “draconian” ad nauseum for decades. Whether hammering away via Twitter, speaking on panels or, really, talking to anyone who will listen, it’s because of John (and people like him) tirelessly beating the drum that we’re finally starting to see long overdue change in the local liquor policy realm. I dropped by Marquis to chat with John the other day so I could get a personal tour of his recently-expanded store, now boasting 3,000 square feet, a 3,000-bottle temperature-controlled cellar, and a 16-bottle wine-dispensing machine offering custom- kurtis@kurtiskolt.com ers the chance to sample the latest staff picks. He’s looking toward teaming up with Benton Brothers Fine Cheese to offer nibbles on Fridays and Saturdays so folks can really take those wine samples for a spin. While wines are organized by country, there are also sections devoted to style (crisp whites, rich reds, etc.) and even by random subjects like ‘date night’ or particular food pairings. The updated store is now even more of a

genuine, fleshed-out example of John’s passions. Not just well-sourced wines that offer great value and a story behind each label, but a place that celebrates the culture of wine on many dynamic, interactive levels. Do swing by and dive into the experience. I asked John to share a couple recent favourites that you should look for and, as always, he didn’t disappoint. Viña Gormaz 2012 Verdejo | Rueda, Spain | $18 | Marquis Wine Cellars Oh man, this is the epitome of sunshine in a glass! A cavalcade of grapefruit, lime, pomelo and peaches with a good handful of rocks thrown in for good measure. When I asked John what he liked about this particular bottle, he waxed on about its “rich, oily texture,” how it’s “a perfect match for seafood and sushi” and that it’s downright refreshing. Bodegas Carchelo 2011 ‘C’ | Jumilla, Spain | $18.90 | Marquis Wine Cellars I think I’ve found my go-to wine for the winter! This dark and brooding trinity of Monastrell, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon exudes warmth and character, folding layer upon layer of cocoa, espresso, currants, thyme, violets and basil. The tannins are wonderfully polished and integrated. It’s the kind of wine where you’ll notice a little extra something wonderful each time you go back to the glass. John notes that it’s a “harmonious blend with a good delineation of flavours,” each grape variety offering a key part of the puzzle. Marquis Wine Cellars is located at 1034 Davie in Vancouver and at Marquis-Wines.com.

Fall in love with autumn There’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to decorating for the season. By Melissa Smalley

Getting rid of the commute in Vancouver Kerr Construction helps Vancouver homeowner see his vision come to life. By Kerry Vital Imagine waking up in the morning and walking next door to work. Sounds like a dream for those who commute every morning and evening. That dream came true for one Vancouver homeowner, with the help of Kerr Construction. “It’s a beautiful home,” says Doug Kerr, founder of Kerr Construction. “One of the aspects of the house that I think turned out really well was

that it looks and feels like a home even though it sits on top of a parking structure beside a commercial building. With the landscaping, the green wall and the exterior finishes it feels like a home and yet still belongs in the environment with its commercial surroundings.” Because of the regulations governing commercial sites, it took a year to get approval from the City of Vancouver, and the home had to match commercial fire codes due to its location. It was also built using steel construction in order to fit in with the city regulations, as wood framing is not allowed. The noise from the existing commercial space was one of the considerations when constructing the home, as well as the space

constraints. “We had to be mindful of the existing active commercial businesses on site and had to keep the noise contained and the site tidy and orderly,” Kerr says. “Space was tight and anything heavy has to be craned in as there was not vehicle access to the rooftop patio where the home was built.” The shape of the home was determined by the patio that was already in place, while the exterior finishes were chosen to complement the commercial building next door. “The existing patio we built on was not

As the weather cools and we find ourselves spending the majority of our time indoors, you may be feeling the urge to spruce up your home with some new decor or a little makeover. When it comes to picking out the proper colours, patterns and styles for your home, this fall there is plenty to be excited about, according to designer Joan Walker, owner of The Curtain Call Drapery & Decorating Co. Similar to previous seasons, wallpaper is still a popular choice for homes, and choosing a print with graphics and texture helps to fill any room with subtle warmth. This year, fabrics for chairs, cushions and other such items are a little more bold, with orange and blue hues. “After years of natural texture, prints are creeping back in with bold graphics and embroidery,” Walker explained. “This can add the perfect pop to any

Home built on commercial building site but looks like it’s always been there “ from page 13 square,” says Kerr. “So the home had to be designed to fit the irregular shape.” The 52-inch-wide pivoting front door suits the commercial space, but also showcases the warmth of the home. Inside, the kitchen island counter and recessed ceiling above match the shape of the home, lending a modern touch to the space. The homeowner, an older gentleman, now has several features that will help as he ages. Among them is a convenience kitchen on the second floor to ensure that he can entertain on his deck without having to go up and down the stairs to the main kitchen. There are also flush transitions on the floor in case a wheelchair is needed in the future. Smart home automation is included throughout, making it easy for the homeowner to keep connected. “My favourite part of the home is the floating wall beside the open staircase,” Kerr says. “It was such an engineering feat to make an eight-foothigh wall solid without being attached at the top or sides. It provides the definition of space without blocking out all the light from the skylights in the stairwell as well as adds a little mystery of how it was constructed.” The view from the home is spectacular, so the exterior deck was constructed to maximize the homeowner’s view, enhanced by the large windows and skylights. Among the interesting features of the home is a textured green wall above the entrance to the parking garage below the home. The greenery already surrounding the home was kept, with new plants added as well. Now, the home looks like it was always there. “The homeowner was very involved in the day-to-day decisions of the home that took just over a year to build,” Kerr says. “He had a vision of how he wanted it to look and how it would function. It really is his vision. Our job was just to figure out how it could be built.” Now the homeowner can enjoy his new home without having to worry about commuting, and he has plenty of space to entertain or relax. “He loves the way the simple modern interior of the home showcases his art collection and his favourite Finn Juhl furniture made in his Danish homeland,” says Kerr.

The green wall above the entrance to the parking garage, left, provides visual interest. Among the features in the home is an eight-foot-high floating wall, below, and tons of natural light in the kitchen, below left, and bathroom, above. Photos submitted by Kerr Construction

Decorating for the season “ from page 13 room, especially in a modern design. And we’re not just seeing a single colour any more as an accent.” If you’re in the market for some new furniture, Walker said the latest trend is leaning towards a more refined, ‘glam-rustic’ look to pieces that are on the lighter side, with fine features and tapered, slim legs. “Overall, it’s a little more sophisticated, but at the same time exuding a casual glamour and relaxed look,” she said. Natural wood finishes are still a popular choice – especially in coffee tables, which are often placed in groupings at different heights for a tapered look. “These pieces are not only multifunctional, but they create a dimension of a square centre of a room.” Other styles to look out for this season include designs with hints of metallic and luxury accent fabrics, including velvet and faux fur, as well as the ever-popular tribal motifs and animal prints. If it’s the flooring in your home that needs a little attention this fall, a popular choice, according to Dora Belyk of Surfside Flooring, is vinyl wood plank and tile. “It is durable and has great design detail that looks very similar to real hardwood or tile,” Belyk said.

For those homeowners who enjoy the challenge of DIY (do it yourself), these vinyl-flooring products are now available in a high-quality selfadhesive format to make the job easier than ever. Whether you’re just looking to add a splash of colour and style to your home, or you want to embark on a complete design renovation, seeking out the advice and expertise of a design professional will help save you time and stress and will ensure you have a finished product you will love.

Getting your furnace ready for winter

By Kerry Vital The mornings are chilly and it’s getting darker earlier. It’s time to start considering getting your furnace going. “Most of the time you can flip a switch and it works,” says Greg Eldridge of Milani Plumbing Drainage and Heating. “Beforehand you should change the filters, get it serviced and clean the ducts.” It is always recommended to have your furnace checked out at least once a year. There’s nothing worse than coming home in the dead of winter to find that your furnace isn’t working, and regular maintenance can prevent that. Most of the time it’s a fairly straight-forward process and won’t take too long. You can easily replace the filter yourself. “You can get a filter at (hardware stores) and furnace stores,” says Eldridge. “Pull

out the filter from the side and swap it.” He recommends replacing the filter about three times a year, or four times a year if you have pets. “You can buy a washable filter that will last forever,” he says, adding that they are convenient but pricier. Before flipping that switch, Eldridge says to make sure there are no flammable liquids near the system and make sure the general area is clear of debris. “Also make sure the piping isn’t obstructed in any way,” he says. “And make sure that the floor and wall grills are clear because that can obstruct the air.” In some cases, there’s no other option but to replace your furnace or other heating system. If you’re unsure as to whether that’s the right step for you, take a look at your heating bills. No one wants to pay a

lot to keep their home cozy, and an inefficient furnace can eat up your hard-earned money. Constantly repairing an older furnace in order to keep it functioning and safe will also cost you a lot more in the long run. Another consideration is whether your furnace is keeping all of the areas of your home warm. If you’re noticing cold spots, your furnace is probably in need of an upgrade. The final thing to think about is whether your furnace is still safe. Older furnaces can leak carbon monoxide or more easily start a fire. As the cold sets in, you’ll appreciate the heat of an efficient furnace or other heating system. It’s very important to keep it working well in order to keep out winter’s chill and to keep you and your family safe.

Getting your furnace ready to keep you warm in the winter can be as easy as replacing the filter, but you should also ensure that you have your system serviced annually to ensure no problems crop up when you are relying on the heat. Photos submitted by Milani Plumbing Drainage and Heating

It’s never too early to start thinking about what you’d like to include in your holiday decor plans. “Traditional colours are being used in a new way,” says Vickie Maxwell, media coordinator for Bouclair Homes. “Red is mixed with gold and black, giving it a strong, glamourous feel to a very traditional holiday colour.” Red, gold and green is usually what comes to mind when Christmas is discussed, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick with those traditional colours. Bouclair is moving beyond that this year with collections that feature teal, silver and white. Keeping your own style in mind will make for a far better look than trying to stick with something that’s not your style. Sparkle has always been an integral part of the holidays for some, and you’ll find plenty of options in stores. “Emerging trends for holiday decor is anything that sparkles and mixing contrasting elements like earthy wood and metallic accents together,” says Pottery Barn spokesperson Kendra Stewart. “Pair big wooden candle pillars with shiny mercury glass and earthy ceramics for a contrast of rustic and luxe elements to create a casual yet festive look for the season.” Pottery Barn is updating some of the traditional holiday items this year, including glittery reindeer and sequined woodland creatures. “The holidays are all about creating an inviting space to entertain and celebrate

the season, and I love the tradition of decorating with my nostalgic pieces and pairing them with new seasonal updates,” says Stewart. “This year, bring a little warmth and sparkle to every room with accents of mercury glass and a chunky knit pillow or faux fur throw.” The holidays can also be a great time to try out some do-it-yourself ideas. Cutting out snowflakes from folded paper is a time-honoured tradition, stemming from elementary school experiences for many. Setting your kids free with the crayons and glitter makes for an easy afternoon craft project. Another great idea is to gather some pine cones from your local park and hanging them up with some ribbon. For a little extra touch, try spray-painting them and rolling them in glitter before hanging them. You can also find a new use for some of the tree ornaments that you don’t want to put on the tree. Filling a glass bowl or vase with them and using it as a centrepiece adds some sparkle and colour to a holiday table. You can also do this with pieces of candy or fruit, or jingle bells from a craft store. Strings of lights are also a great way to decorate for the season, no matter which holiday you celebrate. Running them along a fireplace mantel or inside a window frame will lend some more sparkle to your space. Or try wrapping them up the banister of your stairs, accented with some tinsel garland. Decorating for the holidays is all a matter of individual style, whether you want to go all-out with the lights and wreathes or just decorate a tree for you and your family to enjoy.

The holidays are all about sparkle, from glittery reindeer, top, to festive trees, left, and candle-lit lanterns, above. Potterybarn.com photos above and top, Bouclair Home photo left

Hiring an interior designer well worth the money By Kerry Vital Renovating is one of the most stressful things you’ll ever do in your life. The number of decisions to be made, the constraints of a budget and the scope of the work can all combine to make you wish you had never started the project at all. Hiring an interior designer goes a long way towards making your life a bit easier. “I do a lot of hand-holding,” says Beverley Richards of Beverley A. Richards Interior Designs. “I also put on the stripes and referee between homeowners and trades sometimes.” She laughs when she notes that she sometimes has to play the ref between homeowners who can’t believe what their spouse likes. But money is the biggest reason that homeowners should hire an interior designer when they’re doing renovations. “We do many houses a year, while the homeowner only does one,” Richards says. “We have better buying power and get a price break on things, which I pass on to the client.” Most interior designers will charge by the job or by the hour, depending on the project, but that cost is often less than what you would spend if you were buying materials and furnishings on your own. “You have to trust your designer,” says Richards. “They have your best inter-

ests at heart. The process should be fun, and having a designer means you don’t have to micro-manage everything.” An interior designer will liaise with the contractor and tradespeople, ensuring that they know what everyone is doing and get to that cohesive look at the end. “Everyone has their own expertise,” Richards says.

“You wouldn’t go to a dentist to get your arm fixed, so why would you want to do things you’re not used to doing?” Hiring an interior designer might be one of the most important choices you make when renovating your home, no matter the size of the project. “At the end of the day, you can take great pride in your new space,” Richards says.

Think of the big picture when it comes to windows Where a dream becomes reality

By Kerry Vital When it comes to replacing your windows, you’ll need a clear vision of what you want the exterior of your home to look like. “You have to think big picture on what look you want,” says Mark Brandow, sales manager for Centra Windows. “Are you going to paint the exterior a different colour in the future? Are you going to change the siding?” Brandow says that the first thing he does when he goes to a client’s home is to stand outside the house with the homeowner and talk about the look he or she wants for their home. “You need to have a vision of what you want,” he says. The biggest thing that homeowners need to consider when replacing their windows is the energy savings, especially as it gets colder. “You want to keep the heat in,” Brandow says, adding that it will save you money in the long run. The important things that you should consider are what Brandow calls “the three keys.” The first is the glass, followed by the frame and the installation. “The installation is the most important component,” he says. “If you don’t have it installed properly, it’s more drafty in your room and it opens walls to rot, which leads to mold and bigger expenses.” He also recommends homeowners ask the window company what they use as spacers between the glass to maintain the seal. “We use structural foam that expands when it’s hot and contracts when it’s cold,” Brandow says. “Glass does that too.” When it comes to style, clean, crisp lines and clear glass are the most popular, whether you’re looking for a large bay window or a small picture window. Brandow recommends those looking to replace their windows budget between $600 and $800 per window in order to cover the glass, screens and

inert gas that fills the space between the panes. He also notes that most window replacements will take about five to eight weeks from the time you sign the contract to the finished product. “We’ll go through the options that work for you,” he says. “We’ll talk about function and the trim options including the colour scheme.” While you may not consider your windows tops on the list of things keeping you warm in your house, it’s definitely worth a second thought as the nights get colder. No one wants to spend more money on energy bills than they have to.

The secret to successful new home construction & renovation

Doug Kerr of Kerr Construction shares some must know tips for a smooth and cost-effective project Whether it’s a project that ran way behind schedule or one that went well over budget, everybody knows somebody who’s lived a home renovation horror story. Doug Kerr, owner of Kerr Construction, knows how to avoid construction nightmares. It’s as simple as this: invest in proper design and budgeting work during the pre-construction phase of your renovation project and save money later on. “Two keys things everybody wants: they want it on time and they want it on

budget,” says Kerr. Kerr emphasizes the importance of organizing and designing your build before construction begins. The pre-construction process usually starts with a free consultation, rough budgets, and written design proposal, then moves to the full design and preconstruction planning This can include 3D modeling to help clients better visualize what the finished project will look like. Before any design work is done the zoning and bylaw checks are done to ensure we can get the necessary permits for your project. Budgeting is done throughout the project in order to provide the most accurate numbers possible as the design decisions are being made. The best way to accomplish this is to hire a contractor who also does design (or a designer who also builds) because this will allow them to put accurate numbers into the budget. Kerr Construction realized many years ago that the only way to ensure success in the construction process was to become experts in all the preconstruction steps which include things like great 3D modeling and conceptual design, complete specifications of all finishes decided and documented before construction, plus all

engineering, construction and permit drawings. “With a thorough design and preconstruction process we can give accurate budgets and time lines that we stick to.” Kerr warns that costs increase exponentially when changes are made later in the construction process, something that happens frequently when thorough design is not completed. For example, say a client decides they’d like to change the location of a wall. If this change were made during the design process, let’s estimate the cost at $100. Compare that to if the change were made during the construction phase of the project, when the cost could increase to $1,000. However, if the change were made once the project had been completed, it could cost $10,000. Design, budgeting, drawings, building permits etc can cost anywhere from 5 to 15 per cent of a project. “That may seem like a lot of money to pay at the beginning of a project, but that money gets made back – and much more – throughout the project,” says Kerr. Kerr says investing in proper design work in the pre-construction phase of the project can actually be a money-saver later on, as it allows for competitive bids, clear instructions and less mistakes which can bring down the overall project cost. Kerr Construction’s excellent track record of completing projects on-time and on-budget comes down to their focus on quality pre-construction planning and attention to detail in the execution of those plans. “The way to save money and frustration on your project and to ensure you get the end result you had in mind, is to spend money on proper design,” says Kerr. For more information about Kerr Construction’s work, or to book your free consultation, visit their website kerrconstruction.ca or email: info@kerrconstruction.ca or call 604- 263-0343. Natural gas an energy-efficient option for the home “ from page 15 quality and evenness of cooking with a natural gas cooktop.” Natural gas appliances can be found in many styles, including traditional free-standing ranges, built-in ranges, professional-looking cooktops and single or double wall ovens. “It’s a more professional kind of cooking,” says Sarah Gallop of SGDI. It’s also faster. FortisBC notes that natural gas cooktops heat up instantly and provide precise temperature control. Natural gas ovens are naturally convection ovens, circulating air continuously around your food and ensuring that it cooks or bakes evenly. But it’s not just the kitchen that can benefit from a natural gas makeover. Outdoor spaces and living areas are also tops on the list. “Everybody likes an outdoor firepit now,” says Susanne Doise of Sensitive Design Inc. “You want to create an outdoor space that you can use for three seasons of the year.” When it comes to that outdoor space, you have many more options than just the firepit. Doise says she’s recently designed entire outdoor kitchens, which can be easily connected to your home’s natural gas supply. She and Gallop also note the increase in people installing patio heaters so they don’t have to head inside as soon as it starts getting a bit chilly. “It’s kind of like camping in your own backyard,” says Gallop. “You get the informality of outdoor space with the convenience of natural gas.” And convenient it is. Natural gas is available at the push of a button, so you no longer need to wait for your fireplace or cooktop to heat up or worry about running out of propane for your outdoor barbecue. It’s also more energy-efficient for space and water heating, saving you money on your heating bills. FortisBC offers an online energy calculator that will help you compare the cost of fuel sources and their energy efficiency, demonstrating that natural gas is the most affordable choice for homeowners. Find it at www.fortisbc.com/energycalculator. FortisBC natural gas customers are continuing to benefit from some of the lowest prices in a decade. As of Oct. 1, customers will see a decrease for the cost of natural gas to just over $3 per gigajoule. More information can be found at www.fortisbc.com/rates. Other outdoor options that Gallop, Doise and Malhas have seen lately have been fire tables and full outdoor fireplaces. “People are looking for an indoor-outdoor life,” says Gallop. “You can install a fire table that looks just like a coffee table and can be used as a coffee table outside, with a linear burner in the middle.” She’s also seen firepits within an outdoor dining table. “Natural gas brings warmth,” Gallop says. “It obviously

brings physical warmth but also a warm ambiance.” This is especially important in the living areas, where you want to gather with friends and family. Natural gas fireplaces are both cozy and convenient. FortisBC notes that you can even pre-program some models of gas fireplaces to turn on at a specific time to warm up your space in the morning or before you get home from work. “There’s a lot of flexibility when it comes to gas fireplaces,” says Gallop. “You can convert an old wood-burning fireplace, customize how it looks, whatever you want to suit your style, space and budget.” Doise agrees, saying, “A fireplace in the living room becomes a focal point. You want to place everything around it.” While you may not be contemplating a move any time soon, installing natural gas in your home will also increase the resale value in the future. “It’s a really nice selling feature,” says Malhas. “People want natural gas when they’re looking for a home.” FortisBC has partnered with Black Press on the Reno Me! with FortisBC contest, which began Oct. 7. Readers are encouraged to submit a photo by Oct. 31 of their great room,

kitchen or outdoor space and explain why they want a makeover using natural gas. One finalist from each category will be chosen to receive a consultation with an interior designer and a rendering of their space. Then, one winner will be chosen by readers to receive $10,000 towards their renovation, with the second and third place homeowners receiving $2,000. Voters will also get a chance to win a $500 gift card towards the purchase of a natural gas appliance. To enter the Reno Me! with FortisBC contest, visit your local Black Press paper’s website and click on the Contests link. For more information about natural gas in your home, visit www.fortisbc.com/goodforhomes.

Natural gas is a convenient option for your home, whether you want to fuel a fireplace, below, or an outdoor firepit, top right. Natural gas is also great for cooktops and ovens in the kitchen. Photos submitted by FortisBC

A lesson learned in Japan results in reduced energy bills in British Columbia for the Timmer family Submitted by BC Hydro

Mark Timmer and his wife Tina learned a lot from their time living in Japan. When they returned home, they knew they needed to re-evaluate their priorities when it came to energy efficiency. With the help of the LiveSmart BC program, a partnership between BC Hydro Power Smart, FortisBC and the Province of British Columbia, the Timmers have been able to take advantage of valuable rebates to homeowners. Photo submitted by BC Hydro

Mark Timmer’s wife, Tina, is of Japanese descent, but until a couple of years ago, their four children had only experienced life in Canada. To make sure they got to know their Japanese heritage, the Timmers sold their house in Victoria in 2009, Timmer took a self-funded year away from his job, and the whole family moved into a rented house in Yokohama. That year proved to be educational in more ways than Timmer expected. “Our monthly electricity bills were huge in Japan,” he says, “nor were they low in our old house in Canada. When we returned in 2010, we knew we needed to re-evaluate our priorities. We rented for a year while we looked for a house to buy. Location was important, and size – we have four kids! – but just as important, we wanted energy efficiency.” What Timmer eventually found was a 2,700-square-foot bungalow from 1958, walking distance to great schools and shopping. But he was going to have to do a lot of work to make it energy-efficient. “The incentives available through the LiveSmart BC program were a really important consideration in deciding to do the work,” says Timmer. A partnership between BC Hydro Power Smart, FortisBC and the Province of British Columbia, LiveSmart BC offers valuable rebates to help make homes more energy-efficient. “We knew we didn’t want to have to worry about shocking energy bills in the future, but we still had a budget we needed to keep to in bringing the home up to a really efficient standard. The rebates definitely helped,” says Timmer. In all, Timmer received $1,050 from LiveSmart BC for completing a range of energy-efficiency upgrades to his home, including extensive air sealing around windows, doors and electrical outlets and improvements to attic and roof insulation. An assessment of Timmer’s home before he did the upgrades gave him an EnerGuide 69 rating; that rose to EnerGuide 81 after the work was complete. EnerGuide was established by Natural Resources Canada; any rating over 80 means that a home is extremely energy-efficient and will use up to 30 per cent less energy on heating and electricity than an average home. “Our monthly energy bill is now just $101 a month,” boasts Timmer. “It took work, but the house is really comfortable now. I also think that, in future, the EnerGuide 81 rating will help us sell the house more quickly.” To find out more about the LiveSmart BC program, visit bchydro.com/ livesmartbc.

BASEBALL BANTER: When Ernie Kershaw died last year at 102 years and 130 days, the long-time West Van High math teacher and former Capilanos pitcher in the 1930s and ’40s was believed to be the oldest-living former professional baseball player then alive. Connie Marrero, former Washington Senators’ big league hurler, passed Ernie in longevity in late August and is now the oldest-living former major leaguer still alive and the secondoldest ever behind Chester “Red” Hoff who died at 107. Marrero lives in Cuba and Kit Krieger, retired West Van teacher and former WVTA and BC Teachers’ Federation president, regularly hosts his Cubaball Tours to the land of Fidel, including a visit to see Marrero for whom Krieger has faithfully raised money in lieu of Marrero’s inability for the longest time to get a major league pension. The next tour, organized through West Van’s Prime Travel, is slated for Feb. 14-22, 2014…

Fred Winters, the much-ballyhooed national volleyball team captain “from Victoria” (okay, he was born there) who played in the recent NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) championships in Langley, is actually the same Fred Winters who graduated from Carson Graham in 2000. However, as a basketball player, he was a North Shore first all-star, Howe Sound Tournament MVP and B.C. first all-star with the Eagles’ hoops team which placed third in that year’s provincial “AAA” tournament. Though he preferred basketball over volleyball at the time, he took a volleyball scholarship to Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, where he was a twotime All-American as well as a conference all-academic. He’s been with our national team ever since and plays professionally with a team in Beijing. -This is episode 490 from Len Corben’s treasure chest of stories – the great events and the quirky – that bring to life the North Shore’s rich sports history.

It wouldn’t take much imagination to guess who might want to provide some backing for a game like this set for a Saturday afternoon what with one A&W restaurant near Argyle in Lynn Valley and another at Parkgate in the Windsor area. The two schools are scheduled to play their league game this season on Friday, Nov. 1 at 2:30 at William Griffin Field, so it’s too late for this year. How about next?...

ODDS AND ENDS: Gerry Karvelis had the toughest September start up in his seven years as co-ordinator of athletics for the North Shore Secondary Schools’ Athletic Association – the organization that runs all high school sports competition across North and West Van, up to Squamish and over to the Sunshine Coast – after Leslie Pasternak, his part-time assistant the past two years, left to take the head secretary position at Lynnmour elementary at the beginning of the school year. The assistant’s position has now been filled with Jaimie Allan who began last week…
