Chamber encourages involvement in community building project By Treena Mielke Rimbey and District Chamber of Commerce is throwing its support behind a community building project geared towards helping individuals create a positive foundation for the town in which they live. The 15-week competency based leadership development program is designed for those who wish to improve their personal leadership capacity and, in so doing, impact their community in a positive
way. Participants in the program will learn to better operate their businesses or organizations, mobilize community resources, build community capacity and interact with all stakeholders marshalling them to a common goal. Chamber president Jackie Stratton is excited about the program. “ I really encourage everyone to get involved,” she said. “I encourage business owners to take it and get their employees
to take it. It is a very good program.” Stratton explained Rimbey’s chamber has been invited by the community of Ponoka to participate in the free program which is sponsored by several organizations in Ponoka as well as he town and county and the Ponoka and District Chamber of Commerce. “Our contribution is to be spreading the word and encouraging people to take part,” she said. “We are one of 56 towns in Alberta who are participating,” she noted.

Stratton said the program is all encompassing and would benefit anyone who is involved in an organization or who has a business. “Anyone would benefit,” she said. The program is to include five live video workshops which can be viewed individually or as a group. Live sessions are archived for viewing at the individual’s convenience so do not need to be watched when they are aired. Live video chat coaching sessions, weekly reinforcement and motivational emails are also part of the program. For those who register, on-demand video archive of all programs are available as is an on-line portal containing all materials which can Jackie Stratton provide a platform for the dynamic exchange of information among participants. The program is designed and facilitated by Ian Hill; an humanitarian, social entrepreneur, business leader and award winning philanthropist. Hill has been recognized for his commitment by the National Council for Community and Justice and the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission who both named him Humanitarian of the Year. During the program, Hill provides useful information and tangible tools on how to be more profitable by building healthy workplaces and strengthening the community. For more information on the program go to alberta.becomingacommunitybuilder.ca or call the Rimbey & District Chamber at 403-843-2727 or 403-392-6521 or 350-8874. To register go to register.becomingacommunitybuilder.ca Stratton said anyone who does not have access to a computer who wishes to take the course may contact the chamber and resources and locations will be provided. “We will get you there,” she said. “We can definitely do that.” Chamber and FCSS representatives as well as individuals from the community met last Friday at Super 8 to listen to the first session. Watch for updates on further sessions.

The election is over and the people have spoken. It’s time to move on. But will we? The aftermath of any election still hangs in the air long after the last ballot has been cast and the final Treena Mielke count made. On The Other Side And despite the fact that the bottom line remains a firm, indelible stroke drawn across all the protests, complaints, questions and discontented rumblings that have gone on for the season some refer to as ‘silly season’, it’s done. So let’s welcome our new councils and school boards, shake their hands and give them a chance to make good their election promises and, in the process, make us, the voters, proud. Anyone who makes the decision to run for any level of politics certainly should be given credit for doing so. It’s so much easier not to. It’s so much easier to talk the talk than walk the walk just as it is so much easier to criticize than to help, to condemn than to praise, to knock down than to build up. The election trail of 2013 was littered with lots of garbage from the past that some individuals didn’t really want to pick up and put in the trashcan where it belonged. And even as they talked about building a better future, looking ahead, setting goals and visions, they kept stumbling over these pieces of the past. Consequently, their walk simply did not match their talk and left one to wonder if they were, indeed, really just standing still. The newly elected people, whether they are on town council or county council or on one of our school boards, have a four-year journey ahead of them. It is a journey that will, no doubt, be filled with all kinds of potholes and detours. New challenges will be added to the old ones that the previous councils and school boards faced. Empty storefronts will continue to be a fly in the honey jar of prosperity that big box stores ultimately bring to any town, village or city in Alberta. But is the old adage “you can’t have your cake and eat it, too” wrong? Can small towns support chains like Wal
Mart and Canadian Tire and Tim Horton’s and still keep their downtowns alive and vibrant? Entrepreneurs who are willing to stick their neck out and take a huge leap of faith say they can. But some, who saw the front doors of their grocery store or hardware store nailed shut by these big guys, are not so sure. Good luck, councils, in solving this dilemma. As our elected officials face dilemmas such as this, they will need the help, support and encouragement of those who elected them. There will be times, however, when we disagree with the choices made by the people we voted in. And that’s when we need to take an active role in finding out, to the best of our ability, the facts and the truth and not listen to gossip, rumours and half truths which seem to run ram-
pant when the pot of dissention about any issue gets all stirred up. And we need to remember as much as it our right to exercise our freedom to vote, it is also our responsibility as a taxpayer, to listen, to learn and to be informed before we judge and criticize our elected officials. Four years is a long time. But the decisions have been made and the dye cast. Once again, it’s time to look ahead with optimism, an open mind and a willingness to listen, learn and, hopefully, in the process, gain a little understanding not only about politics, but about the men and women whom, in the democratic process, we voted in. It will be a challenge for us all!

Hunters warned by RCMP to follow rules of the season This week Rimbey RCMP responded to 40 calls for service. Highlights include impaired drivers, break and enters, assault and other criminal matters. Alcohol factor in accident On October 10, at approximately 10:45 p.m., a 2007 Ford F350 departed a local pub after the occupants consumed their fair share. Soon afterwards, police, EMS and the fire department personnel attended a crash where the same truck was found wrapped around a pole near Leedale Road. The driver, a 32-year- old man from Lacombe, was air lifted by STARS Air Ambulance to Edmonton for major life threatening injuries. The passenger of the truck was not seriously injured. Alcohol was the factor in this case. Charges for impaired driving are pending. Assault occurs at party On October 12, a party went bad at a local residence where a 17-year-old took exception to a 25-year-old out-oftowner stealing his i-Pod and a fight broke out. Following the scuffle, a 17-year-old female also got smacked. Mounties attended the scene and gave the 25-year-old a free ride to the crow bar hotel for the night. The accused
has been charged with assault. Police investigate theft Police are actively investigating the theft of a 2011 Honda 400 ATV, red in color, which was stolen from the Medicine Lake area. While this investigation is ongoing, police located several other stolen vehicles, trailers and an ATV this week. Charges have been laid in some cases. Impaired driver apprehended RCMP continue to target impaired drivers in the community in an effort to make our roads safer. A new driver found out the hard way that when your license conditions state “No alcohol”...that means no alcohol...period. A 25-year-old man, who currently holds a GDL license was observed by an officer swerving back and forth in the driving lane and was subsequently stopped. The male advised he had drunk a beer that night and provided a roadside breath sample to the officer. The breath test confirmed he had alcohol in his system so he received an automatic 30-day license suspension and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. Wanted persons arrested Numerous arrests were made this week by police. In several cases,

The mishap occurred on Oct. 15 on Range Road 12 and Township Road 432. EMS and Rimbey fire department were on the scene. APN Photo wanted persons were taken into custody. If you are wanted, you may wish to bypass Rimbey...just saying. Driver in crash airlifted by STARS Air Police, fire and EMS attended a crash west of Rimbey on Highway 53 at Range Road 40. A westbound car ran into a parked semi trailer truck in the late evening hours of October 16. The driver of the car was air lifted by STARS Air Ambulance to Edmonton for serious but non-life threatening injuries and is currently in stable condition. Speed and alcohol were not a factor in this case. Hunters need to follow rules Hunting season is just around the corner and police are seizing numerous game cameras that have been illegally placed on private property without permission. Please use respect and only enter onto lands where you have permission to do so. Always leave gates as you have found them. being followed. Have a safe and enjoyable hunt. Const. Luke Halvorson’s adventures When Const. Halvorson first arrived in Rimbey in 2010 from the Lower Mainland he wasn’t sure about things “west of the 5th” having come from a place where all the streets and alleyways are paved, cell phone coverage is never an issue and it never snows. In all his years of service, he had never encountered anything like what he described as “unbelievable”. In his first month, while patrolling out west, he came across a small herd of fierce animals on the road. He described them as having fiery red eyes, blowing steam from their nostrils and appearing like they would attack him at any moment. From the safety of his patrol car he activated the siren and the beasts fled into the bush out of sight. Since then, Const. Halvorson has become very accustomed to encountering these critters occasionally on the roads throughout the entire detachment area. Having several years experience now under his belt, he no longer fears these creatures and has since been correctly calling them “calves” instead of “baby cows”.

Chamber moves ahead on an incubator plan
403-843-2622
By Treena Mielke The Rimbey Chamber of Commerce is moving ahead on an action plan to bring new life to the downtown core. President Jackie Stratton said an incubator program successfully initiated in Rocky Mountain House as part of the Rural Alberta Business Centre Pilot program has caught the eye of the chamber. “We (the chamber) plan to host a meeting at the Best Western Rimstone Ridge Hotel at 7 p.m. on Nov. 7 to get the buzz going,” she said. “We want lots of people to come and share their ideas and talk to others. Everybody knows somebody that knows somebody and w want to spread the word. A lot of people we’ve talked to think it’s a good idea, but we need to take action.” “The program in Rocky is hugely successful and we are interested in having a similar program here. It is certainly doable, but there are lots of kinks to work out yet.” The incubator program, managed by Michelle Andrishak, involves a number of small businesses set up in a building situated in a high traffic area in the centre of main street, Rocky Mountain House. The 2,200 square-foot building has large windows to provide exposure for the eight offices inside as well as a reception/retail area and a downstairs meeting room. The building was chosen for its location and because it was a turn-key opportunity. The incubator model is based on providing space for a variety of businesses and is not targeted to one industry. Rent is charged at market rate to cover all costs and ensure sustainability. Tenants, who can remain in the incubator for up to two years, have the opportunity to attend free workshops and seminars related to small businesses. “The ultimate goal of the incubator is to enhance economic development in the area. The growth and expansion of the businesses while in the incubator has also generated employment growth,” said Andrishak. While Stratton notes that Rimbey does not qualify for the province’s pilot program, she believes a similar project could be initiated in Rimbey. “I could certainly see it here. I have talked to the mayor and the town is 100 per cent behind the concept. It certainly would give small businesses the opportunity to test the waters when they are just starting out.” Stratton said the chamber wouldn’t qualify for provincial funding to get the project off the ground, so would need corporate dollars to launch it. “We’re going to need assistance at the beginning, but it will eventually become a self sustaining program.” For the last decade, Alberta has led Canada in the number of new small businesses created. Small businesses are a vital part of Alberta’s economy, making up 96 per cent of all businesses in the province. They provide about 37 per cent of all private sector jobs in Alberta and contribute an estimated 29 per cent to Alberta’s gross domestic product.

Parkland Manor resident celebrates birthday with his family and friends By Treena Mielke A small intimate gathering of family and friends helped a Parkland Manor resident enjoy another birthday. Harry Ellsworth turned 102 on Oct. 9 and his children, Carol, Les, Orville and Ken were all on hand to help him blow out his candles. Ellsworth, who is hard of hearing and has poor eyesight, is in good health otherwise and is quite spry, despite his advanced years. The elderly gentleman, born in the Forshee area in 1911, the same year that the Alberta census showed Alberta to be populated by 374,295 people was surrounded by family and friends for his birthday celebra-
tion. Carol Jaffray, Ellsworth’s daughter said she believes hard work, clean living and lots of exercise has contributed to her father’s long life. In his younger years, Ellsworth was a mixed farmer in the Forshee area. He and his wife Clara, who has since passed away, raised four children; Orville, Ken, Leslie and Carol. He moved to Rimbey in 1974. While farming in the area, Ellsworth was a member of the Forshee Hall board. The Rimbey Manor resident has 11 grandchildren, 27 greatgrandchildren and one great, great grandson.

Bentley arena upgrades are now complete By June Norvila Upgrades to the Bentley arena completed over the summer just in time for the new season. An arena renovation fund that was kick started by funding received from Kraft Hockeyville when Bentley ended up being in the top four in the competition in 2011 for which they received $25,000.00, ended up being $100,000.00. That has now been all but used up, leaving less than $3,000.00. New rubber floor matting cost $38,500.00. New brighter, more efficient lighting cost $19,650.00, and overhead infrared heaters were an additional $22,000.00. Renovations to rest rooms claimed the rest with replacement toilets, sinks, and urinals being $6,900.00, flooring in lobby washrooms another $3,550.00 and the epoxy finish on shower walls and floors another $6,800.00. All figures are approximate. All this was made possible due to the volunteers on the Hockeyville committee who started
the fundraising and helped Bentley place so well, by getting matching grants, and from Lacombe County and other gracious groups and donors. Another improvement will come with the motion to purchase a new walk-behind floor scrubber for $5,000.00 being passed at the town council meeting of October 8, with funding from the 2013 arena budget.

Political forum polite and controlled By June Norvila At least 55 Bentley residents turned out for the Bentley civic political forum held October 16 in the Bentley Community Hall to hear and put a face to the candidates running for town council. Some faces were new; some were familiar. All eight candidates attended: Joan Dickau and Lynda Haarstad-Petten running for mayor, incumbents Cliff Knutson and Butch Howard, and also Pam Davey, Richard Diamond, Robin Lemay,
and Ray Williams. It was deemed a good turnout by Bentley Municipal Library board and library society organizers and most of the candidates. Facilitators were Arlene Tanasiuk who explained the rules and Rick Cookson-Hills who helped compile and posed the questions. After a two-and-a-half minute introduction from each of the candidates, prewritten questions were put the group. It was a polite and controlled atmosphere. Questions ranged from drawing in
Bentley curling club sets fees and dates By June Norvila Despite a poor turn out at the Bentley Curling Club’s annual fall general meeting the executive is excited about the up and coming curling season. Curling is scheduled to start on Monday, October 28. It was left undetermined at the meeting whether to have club champions based on the final points earned throughout the season or whether to use those points to seed teams in an actual playoff to determine the club league champs. There seemed to be a split on which format to use so each league night will be asked to vote on the issue at their

Belly dancing helps body and soul By Treena Mielke For the last decade, Gabriella Bache has faithfully made the weekly trek from Sylvan Lake to Rimbey to teach students belly dancing, a graceful, ancient dance form which has, for centuries, held a mysterious, sensuous appeal. Bache had been teaching belly dancing in Sylvan Lake for about a year when she decided to expand her classes to Rimbey. She also teaches in Ponoka. Belly dancing is a form of dance that allows women to express themselves, she said. “It helps women get in touch with their own inner beauty. You don’t need a partner, you just dance. Everyone does it differently.” Bache first became interested
in belly dancing several years ago while she was still living in Germany. “I saw an ad in the newspaper and I just knew it was for me,” she said. “Before that, I played soccer, but I found learning belly dancing was very natural for me.” Over the years she took several workshops from a number of instructors, gradually perfecting her skill. However, it would be six years after moving to Sylvan Lake from Germany with her husband and three children before she began teaching the dance, herself. But once she got started there was no holding back and she was amazed at how quickly her classes caught on. Continued on page 14

Ancient dance offers many benefits Continued from page 14 Belly dancing, a form of dance first practiced by women in ancient Egypt, has many benefits, she said. “It tones all your muscles and helps you get in shape while you are having fun.” Belly dancing also gives women a chance to forget about all their worries and stresses of the day and relax and flow with the music. “It is good for your body and soul. When you come to class you can leave everything behind.” Age is irrelevant for anyone who wants to learn to belly dance, she said. Right now my youngest pupil is six and my oldest is 66, but I have had ladies as old as 80 plus, participate. It really doesn’t matter.” No matter what size a woman is or what level of skill she possesses, belly dancing is a fun, expressive way to release tension, get some exercise, and feel beautiful in the process, said
Bache. The amiable, soft-spoken teacher said she loves what she does. “I give lots of my time to my students, but when I see changes in how they feel and think about themselves, it is wonderful. It makes me very happy.” Bache’s love of belly dancing and her skill as a teacher has been passed onto her 20-year-old daughter Julia who teaches classes to young ladies beginning at the age of six. Because belly dancing is a women’s form of dancing to be celebrated by women, Bache organizes an allwomen’s celebration called a hafla for her students. “It’s a party complete with a Greek dinner and deserts. Everyone comes and has a good time,” she said. Belly dancing classes begin in Rimbey on Oct. 30 and run from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Rimbey Community Centre.

Edge to compete in the Canadian Finals Rodeo coming to Edmonton By Treena Mielke After a two-year hiatus, tie-down roper Dean Edge and his horse Sid will soon be off to the Canadian Finals Rodeo. Edge, who finished fourth in the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association season, is pleased and excited to be competing at the CFR to be held in Edmonton at Rexall Place Nov. 6 to 10. He is also pleased to be so high up in the standings. “I haven’t been for a couple of years,” he said. “But I had a pretty good idea I would make it in September. This is my seventh time going and it’s more exciting than ever this time. I have a really good feeling about it. Everything seems to be clicking together well.”

This is my seventh time going and it’s more exciting than ever this time. I have a really good feeling about it. Everything seems to be clicking together well.” Dean Edge Edge, who turned pro in 2004, credits his horse Sid for being a valuable partner in his rodeoing successes. “I’ve had him sine 2000. He is 18-years-old, but he is very well built and doesn’t seem to get sore. He hasn’t had many injuries. He is a good horse.” Last weekend, Edge was off to Billings, Montana to compete in a rodeo in which the standings will be used for next year. “We’re already starting up for next season,” he said. Being a competitive tie-down roper with a name to be reckoned with at the CFR gives the Rimbey native a natural high, but along with the adrenalin rush that comes along with competing is the thrill of celebrating his daughter Erin’s birthday at that time. “She was born in 1909 in Edmonton during the CFR,” he said. As well as Erin, Dean and his wife Jeanine have 16-month-old twins, Lane and Lexi.

Former county councillor, Keith Beebe to leave the province By Amelia Naismith After nine years on council, Keith Beebe of Ponoka County Council has decided not to return and instead will set out for Saskatchewan and a slower paced life. He tried to retire several years ago when he gave up farming and decided it wasn’t for him yet. Beebe is going to give it another go; focus on fishing, gardening and his grandchildren in the Yorkton area. Beebe decided to first run for council when his neighbours kept asking him to. “I was always interested in local politics. I was interested in any politics, I’d just never done anything about it.” During that first campaign Beebe spent a week driving door-to-door with an honest message and strategy. He told ratepayers he would make no promises about progress but would work hard and when concerns needed addressing, they would ap-
pear before council. “Now some of them are calling me a liar because I got stuff done,” said Beebe with a laugh. Beebe learned neighbors don’t vote someone in as councillor because they’re smarter than everyone else, they vote for that person because they feel the candidate is just smart enough to take their concerns to council. Over his years on council, Beebe achieved many accomKeith Beebe plishments for the ratepayers. “I helped get Secondary Highway 607. I just worked with the government to get it. It really wasn’t a councillor’s job.” Beebe also assisted with rural addressing, high speed Internet towers and, as a member of council, helped support the ag building in Rimbey. ‘The first year we got the Leedale Road built, it was a slop hole before that.” Looking back, he says one of the biggest frustrations for him was the fact the seniors’ lodge he had worked for four years on wasn’t realized in
his time on council. “I’m very disappointed it didn’t work. It’ll still go but it might take another two years,” he said. While he enjoyed his time on council Beebe says he wouldn’t call every day fun. “You can please some of the people some of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time but you can’t please all of the people all of the time,” said Beebe, playing on President Lincoln’s “Fool” quote. One of the factors that made his time on council so enjoyable was the people he worked with. “As far as I’m concerned I had a perfect staff over at the office . . . Also my work-
ing crew.” Beebe calls his time on council a “great experience”, but for him there’s no looking back. “After I get over the feeling I’m not wanted anymore I don’t think I’ll miss it.” “I spent a lot of sleepless nights . . . You’re not supposed to take it to bed but I did. My stomach couldn’t take it anymore,” he added. Advising the new council, Beebe says members should learn to compromise. “Make sure to place principles before personalities, because that’s where everybody goofs up.” Out of the five council members Beebe is the only one not seeking reelection.

Robert Charles “Bob” Fujczak of Red Deer passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at the age of 67 years. He will be loving remember and sadly missed by his wife, Marlaine; his son Robb (Sharon); his daughter Katrina; his two precious grandchildren Samantha and Ryley all of Red Deer; his Mother, Hazel Buckingham of Bluffton, Alberta; his sisters; Vivian (Al) Brissette of Calgary, Alberta, Brenda (Romeo) Denomme, Pauline (John) Foss all of Bluffton, Alberta; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves to mourn his sisters-in-law, Michele Prentice of Massena, New York and Marcia (Dan) McGowan of Kingston, Ontario and Beverley O’Prey of Wooler, Ontario. He was predeceased by his father, Michael Fujczak, step-father, Walter Buckingham; his brother, Clarence Fujczak; his brother-in-law, Robb O’Prey and his mother and father-in-law, Bob and Grace O’Prey. Bob joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a proud Canadian at the age of 20 years, this pride and dedication to his country continued until his retirement. Because of his chosen career he was able to live in many parts of Canada. Starting in Ontario at Clinton and then Kingston, where he met the love of his life, Marlaine O’Prey. They were married and their first child, Katrina was born in Kingston, then the small family was next stationed in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, where his son, Robb was born. The family then moved to Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Cold Lake, Alberta, Nanaimo, British Columbia, Borden, Ontario, back to Cold Lake and finally retiring in Innisfail, Alberta. They recently moved to Red Deer to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Because of the many moves, Bob and his family were blessed to have many good and dear friends all over Canada. He remained in contact with them right up until his death. A Celebration of Bob’s Life was held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 - 67A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ed Mangham, officiating. Interment will take place at Alto Reste Cemetery, Red Deer following the funeral service.
